Arshdeep made his international debut during the India-England three-match T20I series opener, in Southampton early this month. 'Fantastic option': Former Pakistan cricketer backs young Indian player for T20 WC & Asia Cup squads

Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has lauded Team India's youngsters after the Men in Blue's two-wicket win over West Indies in the second and penultimate ODI, held on Sunday (July 24) in Trinidad. With another win on the trot, India have also taken an unassailable 2-0 lead over the Nichoas Pooran-led hosts and will now aim for a series whitewash in the final ODI, on Wednesday (July 27).

Talking about the likes of Shreyas Iyer (63), Sanju Samson (54), Player-of-the-Match Axar Patel, etc., Kaneria lavished huge praise on the Rahul Dravid-coached Indian team's younger brigade and termed them 'serious match-winners'. India were in a tricky position in pursuit of 312 versus the Windies, being 79/3 and then in a tight spot at 256/6, but half-centurions Sanju, Iyer and Axar's late blitz (64 not out off 35 balls) took the visitors past the finish line.

Thus, Kaneria said on his Youtube channel, "The youngsters in the Indian team like Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson took responsibility after skipper Shikhar Dhawan got out (in the second ODI). "In absence of big names like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah among many others, these boys have won overseas. Be it an A, B or C team, when you go overseas, conditions are against you. Hats off to the young team. Shikhar Dhawan’s captaincy has been admirable. He has rotated the bowlers very well," added the tainted spinner.

WI vs IND: The lot are serious match-winners, says former Pakistan spinner on Men in Blue's young brigade

Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has questioned the Indian team management for persisting with an underperforming Virat Kohli. While Kohli's century-drought continues since late 2019, he has failed to even cross the fifty-run mark in India's ongoing tour of England.

During the one-off Test in Edgbaston, Kohli had scores of 11 and 20. While he was rested for the three-match T20I series opener, he got favoured over in-form Deepak Hooda in the remaining two games but only ended with 12 runs overall. After missing the first ODI versus Jos Buttler &amp; Co., Kohli returned for Thursday's (July 14) second ODI but once again failed, scoring a 25-ball 16. Thus, questions are being raised on his form and also on why he is being rested for the West Indies T20Is -- in the Caribbean island -- despite poor form.

From Rohit Sharma to Babar Azam: How cricket fraternity has reacted to Virat Kohli's poor form

Virat Kohli's disastrous run with the bat continued in the second T20I between India and England at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Saturday (July 09). Kohli made his much-awaited comeback to the Indian T20I team after four months in the second game of the series after missing the series-opener. All eyes were on the batting maestro, who was expected to fire all cylinders and respond to his critics in style amid his lean patch.

However, Kohli failed to get going once again as he endured yet another disappointing outing with the bat. The former India skipper was dismissed after scoring just 1 run off three balls and failed to make an impact in the game. He was roped into the playing XI in the place of in-form Deepak Hooda but failed to justify his inclusion.

Kohli was expected to open the batting with skipper Rohit Sharma after Ishan Kishan was dropped from the XI but India instead promoted wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant at the top in a move that surprised many. Kohli came out to bat his usual no.3 spot but it was the same story for the Indian star.

Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria slammed Kohli for his poor show in the 2nd T20I and said he is becoming a liability for Team India now. Kaneria believes Kohli should give up his spot in India's T20I squad if he cannot bounce back to form ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia this year.

"When the big guns were out, even then the team was performing, the youngsters were doing the job. The big player should understand that he is becoming a liability to the team. Virat Kohli has become a liability now. So, either he needs to give up his place or make a comeback before the T20 World Cup," Kaneria said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Kohli was playing only his 3rd T20I for India since leaving captaincy in the shortest format last year. He did not feature in the home series against New Zealand last year and also missed the series against Sri Lanka and South Africa this year. He has been enduring a lean patch across formats in international cricket over the last few years and has struggled to score runs consistently.

Pant getting a chance to lead the Indian team clearly indicates that he is part of the leadership group in the side and might be one of the future leaders. His comments came ahead of India's all-important one-off fifth Test against England in Edgbaston starting from July 01. The rescheduled Test match will decide the fate of India's away Test series against England last year where the visitors took a 2-1 lead before the final match was postponed due to COVID-19.

With Indian captain Rohit Sharma testing positive for COVID-19 ahead of the 5th Test, India are likely to name a stand-in skipper for the game in case the Hitman fails to recover fully in time. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah is the favourite to take over the captaincy baton in Rohit's absence but Kaneria believes the fast bowler should not be burdened with the responsibility.

"BCCI has indicated that Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah or Ravichandran Ashwin could be given the captaincy if Rohit Sharma isn't available. Bumrah shouldn't be given the load of captaincy and he should rather concentrate on his bowling. I wouldn't want him to lead the side in the fifth Test," said the former Pakistan spinner.

He did a horrible job in SA series: Ex-Pakistan cricketer feels Rishabh Pant not mature enough to lead India

Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has once again raised questions over Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant's fitness amid criticism over his inconsistent performances with the bat. Pant led the Indian team in the recently-concluded T20I series against South Africa at home in the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma and vice-captain KL Rahul. However, he failed to impress with his performance and was widely targeted by critics.

Kaneria, who has previously slammed Pant over his fitness, has once again questioned him and said he is lagging behind when compared to his other teammates. The Indian team had adopted a new strict fitness regime when Virat Kohli had taken over as captain, however, Kaneria believes Pant's fitness is mediocre at present.

"Rishabh Pant's fitness is not up to the mark and is very low. I would say it's rather mediocre. There was a massive change in terms of the team's fitness standards when Kohli took over the captaincy. But Pant is lagging behind when compared to others," the former Pakistan spinner said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Kaneria even went on to raise concerns over the fitness of Rohit Sharma and said India's current captain doesn't look too fit either. However, the former Pakistan spinner insisted fitness won't come in Rohit's way, who is a pure batter but asserted that Pant needs to manage his weight issues as it will affect his flexibility and will also limit his batting abilities.

"Although Rohit Sharma too isn't very fit, he is a batter, and it is fine for him. But Pant has to improve his fitness as he is a wicketkeeper. Even at this young age, we've seen how he hasn't been able to catch properly while keeping in recent games. This is due to his weight issues. It has an effect on his flexibility too. He plays with an approach of hitting the bowlers right from the onset. Mental toughness and maturity will also only come with fitness," Kaneria said.

After veteran wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik's comeback to the Indian side, Kaneria believes Pant will have to fight for his spot in India's T20I team. Comparing in-form Karthik and Pant's fitness levels, Kaneria said the 37-year-old is super fit even at his age.&nbsp;

"When you see Dinesh Karthik, he is super fit even at this age. We've seen that in his batting as well as wicketkeeping. Pant may have scored 70-odd in the warmup game, but he hasn't been consistent and his graph is going down. He will have to fight for his place in the team as there are other options like Dinesh Karthik, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson," he said.

Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has once again raised questions over Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant's fitness amid criticism over his inconsistent performances with the bat.

Also Read: Selectors need to have hard conversations with Rohit, Kohli & Rahul over their strike-rate: Ex-India cricketer Kaneria even went on to raise concerns over the fitness of Rohit Sharma and said India's current captain doesn't look too fit either. On Wednesday (June 22), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced an 18-member squad for Pakistan's forthcoming two-match Test series versus Sri Lanka, which will get underway on July 16 in Galle. The squad sees the return of former captain and wicketkeeper-batter Sarfaraz Ahmed whereas veteran spinner Yasir Shah has also regained his spot, after missing out on the home Test series versus Australia early this year.

Yasir was last seen in action for Pakistan against West Indies, held last year, but wasn't prefered for the home Tests against Pat Cummins-led Aussies. He reclaimed his place, leading to Sajid Khan's omission. After the team was announced, former spinner Danish Kaneria&nbsp;slammed PCB and came down heavily on the selection. He didn't approve of Sarfaraz's return and also feels that Sajid should have retained his spot after playing all Tests versus the Baggy Greens.

"I don't understand on what basis the selectors have picked the team. It seems like the selectors will never improve and think about players while picking a team. I don't know how Ramiz (Raja) approved this team. Some changes were needed after Australia defeated Pakistan in their own backyard. Off-spinner Sajid Khan played all the Test matches against Australia, but Pakistan didn't give a chance to Yasir Shah, who would have gotten exposed against the Aussie batters. Sajid has been unfairly treated. They also removed Usman Qadir and didn't play him against Australia either. Zahid Mahmood was also omitted without any reason. I'm not sure whether Babar (Azam) or (Mohammad) Wasim are picking the team or doing favours for friends," Kaneria said on his&nbsp;YouTube&nbsp;channel.

"Pakistan need to make a team for the future, but it seems like the current selection committee is doing favours. One who offers gifts and keeps selectors happy gets into the team. Hardworking and honest players are being treated unfairly," Kaneria added.

'One who offers gifts...': Danish Kaneria reacts, lashes out at PCB after Test team announced for SL tour

Rishabh Pant has not enjoyed the best of time with the bat in the ongoing T20I series against South Africa at home. The stand-in skipper of the Indian team has been lauded by many for his captaincy but his form with the bat has been a major concern for the hosts with T20 World Cup 2022 just four months away. Pant has so far managed to score only 57 runs in the ongoing five-match series against the Proteas.

The series is currently tied at 2-2 after India defeated South Africa comprehensively by 82 runs in the 4th T20I on Friday. The series-decided will be played at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday (June 19). Ahead of the decider, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria made a bizarre statement raising questions over Pant's fitness amid his poor form.

Speaking in a video on his YouTube channel, Kaneria pointed out at the shortcomings as far as Pant's wicket-keeping is concerned. The former Pakistan cricketer said he has noticed that Pant doesn't squat lower or sit on his toes when keeping to pacers and that it seems like he is 'overweight'.

“I want to talk about Pant's wicketkeeping. I've noticed one thing – he doesn't squat lower and sit on his toes when a fast bowler is bowling. Seems like he is overweight and being bulky doesn't give him that much time to come up quickly. It raises concern over his fitness," said Kaneria.

"Is he 100 per cent fit? But when it comes to his captain, bowlers and batters including Hardik and Karthik have supported him well. Pant also has a chance to become the first captain to win a T20 series against South Africa,” added the former Pakistan spinner.

India rode on Dinesh Karthik's heroic knock of 27-ball 55 and Hardik Pandya's 46 off 31 balls to post 169 runs on the board in the 4th T20I against the Proteas on Friday. Avesh Khan then bowled an exceptional spell to pick up a four-wicket haul and run through the South African batting line-up.

'Rishabh Pant is overweight': Danish Kaneria raises questions over Indian skipper's fitness

Danish Kaneria's feud with former Pakistan captain and all-rounder Shahid Afridi continues to make the headlines. It all started with Kaneria's claims where he revealed that Afridi never wanted him to be part of the Pakistan cricket team, during his playing days, and didn't favour him on religious grounds.

"Shoaib Akhtar was the first person to talk about my problem in public. Hats off to him for saying it (how I was mistreated in the team because of being a Hindu). However, he was later pressured by several authorities. He then stopped talking about it. But yes, it did happen to me. I was always degraded by Shahid Afridi. We used to play together for the same department, he used to keep me on the bench and didn't let me play the one-day tournament," Kaneria had told IANS during a recent conversation.

To this, Afridi joined in and slammed the tainted Pakistani spinner with some hard-hitting remarks. "And the person saying all this, look at his own character. He is accusing me to get cheap fame and make money. Kaneria was like my younger brother and I played with him in the department for many years," Afridi was quoted as saying by the news.com.pk.

On Monday morning (May 09), Kaneria fired shots once again at Afridi. Replying to Afridi's comments where he mentioned India as an enemy country, Kaneria schooled the ex all-rounder and wrote, "India is not our enemy. Our enemies are those who instigate people in the name of religion. If you consider India as your enemy, then don't ever go to any Indian media channel."

He soon tweeted saying, "When I raised my voice against forced conversion, I was threatened that my career would be destroyed."

'India not our enemy country' - Danish Kaneria slams Shahid Afridi, makes explosive remark on Twitter

Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria had made heads turn when he claimed that ex all-rounder and Men in Green captain Shahid Afridi didn't want him in the national team and even conspired against him on religious grounds.

Backing his case, Kaneria -- who remains Pakistan's leading wicket-taker among spinners in Test cricket -- had revealed that the matter was first raised by Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar. In addition, he returned with 48 Test, 395 ODI and 98 T20I scalps.

He's giving interviews to our enemy country which can incite religious sentiments: Afridi on Kaneria's claims

Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria believes that it was the right call from MS Dhoni to step down as the captain of Chennai Super Kings ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season.<o:p></o:p>

Speaking to IANS, Kaneria said that the appointment of Ravindra Jadeja as the new CSK skipper is a ‘far-reaching decision’ which will also help the Indian cricket team in the long run.

“We all know what kind of player Dhoni is. His decisions are always correct. I think he is one of the best captains in world cricket. He has won the 50-over World Cup, he has won the T20 World Cup, he has won the Champions Trophy and has won the IPL four times for Chennai Super Kings. Apart from this, there are many matches which India won due to Dhoni’s on-field decision."<o:p></o:p>

“So I think giving the captaincy to Jadeja is a far-reaching decision. Look, the Indian team is a balanced one and captaining it in all formats is not an easy task. Virat Kohli was very good, but he has left captaincy. Now Rohit Sharma has to lead in all three formats. Whether one accepts this or not, captaining India in all formats of the game is a pressure job," said Kaneria.

Kaneria added that the Indian cricket team will need a player in the coming years to take over the reins from Rohit Sharma and Jadeja can be the one to assume that responsibility.<o:p></o:p>

“Today or tomorrow, India will have to think about split captaincy. Otherwise, Rohit will be under pressure, and it’s bound to happen. If we talk about the formation of the Indian team, only a few players are sure of their place in the team and Jadeja is one of them. In such a situation, I think Dhoni’s decision has been taken keeping the future in mind," he concluded.<o:p></o:p>

Also read | 33 wides! RCB and Punjab Kings register bizarre record in IPL 2022 clash Kaneria added that the Indian cricket team will need a player in the coming years to take over the reins from Rohit Sharma and Jadeja can be the one to assume that responsibility. “Today or tomorrow, India will have to think about split captaincy. Otherwise, Rohit will be under pressure, and it’s bound to happen. If we talk about the formation of the Indian team, only a few players are sure of their place in the team and Jadeja is one of them. In such a situation, I think Dhoni’s decision has been taken keeping the future in mind," he concluded.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) started way back in 2008. Since the inaugural edition, the cash-rich league has grown from strength to strength and created a huge market for the expansion of T20 cricket across the globe. It led to the start of various T20 leagues worldwide and, thus, has been a stepping stone in the rise of the shortest format of the game.

After IPL, the likes of Pakistan Super League (PSL), Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Big Bash League (BBL), etc. have come into existence. Many times debate sparks as to which is the biggest league among all. However, most experts of the game and ardent fans believe IPL remains a level higher than all. Recently, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria made a big claim on IPL, comparing it with PSL.

"Being a very professional event, IPL is providing so many talents to Indian cricket. And it’s getting better and better with each passing season, while PSL is doing hardly anything for Pakistan cricket. If some player performs well in PSL, the unprofessional approach of Pakistan Cricket Board mars his chances of getting into the national side," Kaneria said.

Kaneria added, "See, there are no favourites in the T20 format. But if we talk about the combination, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are good. There are two new teams in this edition, and you cannot take them lightly. IPL is a tournament in which all the cricketers want to play. You see, many players from South Africa took leave from their national side to play in the IPL. So this is turning out to be a big event every single year."

Babar Azam-led Pakistan locked horns with Australia in the first Test at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi on March 04. The match was a run-fest that produced as many as&nbsp;1,187 runs with only 14 wickets falling overall.&nbsp;

Thus, the historic Test between Pakistan and Australia was a dull affair and ended in&nbsp;a tame draw with no even contest between bat and ball. The pitch for the three-match series opener was, thus, heavily criticised on social media platforms as it wasn't a perfect endorsement for Test cricket. Following the criticism, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja came forward and defended the Rawalpindi pitch.

"A drawn match is never a good advertisement for Test cricket, and I totally understand that we need to get a result in five days these days, and we get it 90% [of the time], but I want to remind you of 2-3 things," Ramiz said in a video message posted on PCB's official Twitter handle.

"It takes 5-6 months to prepare pitches, and during the off-season, you will see - soil is coming from Australia; we've experimented, consulted soil experts and prepared soils, and we will redo 50-60 pitches all over Pakistan once our season ends in March-April. " He further opined, "I understand the fans' frustration and it would have been great if there was a result in this Test match. But do remember that this is a three-Test series and there is a lot of cricket left to be played. We cannot make a fast or bouncy pitch for the heck of it and put the conditions in Australia's lap. It is important that when we play at home, we play according to our strengths."

The Test grew a lot of eyeballs as Australia was touring Pakistan after these many years, but what wicket did they produce for that?," questioned the tainted cricketer.

KL Rahul-led Team India lost the first ODI, of the three-match series, versus Temba Bavuma's South Africa at Boland Park, Paarl on Wednesday (January 19). Opting to bat first, Proteas were reduced to 68 for 3 before Bavuma's 110 and Rassie van der Dussen's 129 not out propelled the home side to 296-4 in 50 overs. In reply, India managed 265-8 courtesy fifties from Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli and Shardul Thakur.

Ahead of the second and penultimate ODI between both sides, on Friday (January 21), former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has made a glaring remark. Kaneria feels Indian team is divided in two groups, claiming that stand-in captain Rahul and Kohli are not on the same page. Earlier, reports were doing the rounds that there was a rift Kohli and limited-overs skipper Rohit Sharma. However, Kohli had tarnished all such reports before the SA tour.

Kaneria told in a video on his Youtube channel, "We saw that the Indian dressing room was divided into two groups. KL Rahul and Virat Kohli were sitting apart. Also, Kohli wasn’t in the same mood as he used to be when he was the captain. But he’s a team man and will come back stronger."

Kaneria's claims make heads turn given Rahul has lavished praise on Kohli ahead of the ODIs. Talking about the former captain Kohli, the 33-year-old took the field for the first time after giving up captaincy altogether -- quitting as T20I and Test captain whereas he was&nbsp;sacked as ODI skipper.&nbsp;

Kaneria feels India will be eager to sign off from South Africa with an ODI series win, losing the Tests 2-1. However, the tainted spinner opines that India need to stand tall after lacking intensity in the series opener. "After losing the Test series, India would be eager to redeem themselves and clinch the ODI rubber. But Rahul hasn’t shown that spark until now. He had led in the Test series but wasn’t able to lift the team to break the South African partnership. At one stage, it didn’t look like the Proteas would put up 296 on the scoreboard. Lack of intensity from the Indian team helped the opposition in scoring such a total. There were also fielding lapses from the visitors," said the former Pakistan spinner.

Rahul, Kohli were sitting apart: Former PAK spinner makes glaring remark after India's 1st ODI loss

Danish Kaneria, the former Pakistan spinner, recently revealed his T20 XI of the year. With the calendar year coming to an end, there was plenty of cricketing action across formats. In the shortest format, the T20 World Cup was held in the UAE in the last quarter whereas several bilateral series also took place, across the globe, as a build-up for the marquee event.

Hence, many top stars performed as per expectations whereas some new faces impressed the most. On the other hand, some big names failed to live upto expectations. In this regard, Kaneria's list features some top names from the game but didn't have both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma; two of the most consistent performers in the format and among the top-three run-getters in T20Is overall.

Kaneria told on his Youtube channel, "Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam are my openers as performed really well throughout 2021. They were outstanding in the T20 World Cup (2021) and they played well in the recently concluded series against West Indies as well," Kaneria said.&nbsp;

"People will say at one down it should be Rohit Sharma or KL Rahul or Virat Kohli but no I have a different opinion, I will go with Jos Buttler. He (Buttler) played really well and he had also scored a hundred in World Cup. So, he deserves the spot," Kaneria explained.&nbsp;

The rest of his line-up comprised England's big-hitter Liam Livingstone (who had a decent T20 WC), Mitchell Marsh (Player-of-the-Match in T20 WC finale), Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin (who has 9 scalps from 5 T20Is since his comeback in limited-overs setup) and Adam Zampa whereas his pacers included Shaheen Afridi, Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah. Rishabh Pant was named as the 12th man.

For the unversed, Kohli amassed 299 in 8 innings at 74.75 along with 4 fifties in the shortest format in 2021. Rohit, on the other hand, ended with 424 runs at a strike-rate of 150.88 with 5 half-centuries.

No Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma! Kaneria's T20 XI of 2021 features Bumrah, Rishabh Pant & 2 more Indians

Virat Kohli-led Team India are on the brink of elimination in the T20 World Cup 2021 edition, in the UAE. While the Men in Blue have lost both their games in the Super 12 round by huge margins, they remain in contention mathematically but need a monstrous effort to enter the last four.

As of now, the fight for the last four looks very much like a lost battle for the one-time winners. Ahead of their must-win clash versus Afghanistan, on Wednesday (November 3) at Abu Dhabi, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has made heads turn with his views on Captain Kohli.

Speaking on India's debacle in the T20 WC, Kaneria said on his Youtube channel, "There are a lot of reasons. The first one is Virat Kohli - he has been an unsuccessful captain. He made wrong team selections for the WTC final. Until he was there in Australia, India lost and then Ajinkya Rahane became the captain and led his team to a win. No doubt Virat Kohli is a big player but I have never seen captaincy potential in him. He has a lot of aggression but the decision-making ability as a captain is missing in him."

"Another reason is Ravi Shastri who has just disappeared. It seems as though he feels 'My time is up, the World Cup is the last in my tenure. I won't be there post this. So whatever happens let it happen' and he too has stepped aside. I won't blame MS Dhoni too much since he has just come into the side. Yet, he was part of the management and cricket involves all the 11 players as well as the management. So everybody is responsible. It's not an individual sport but a team sport so the entire team is responsible."

"I cannot understand this conflict - Virat Kohli opens for RCB and stated that he will open in the World Cup as well. Once the World Cup comes closer he says that there aren't better openers than KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma and they will open. Then where did Ishan Kishan come from during the New Zealand game? No doubt Rohit Sharma is the vice-captain but they ended up feeling that Trent Boult is ahead of him so they should try something different. They would be assuming that Rohit and Rahul will come out to open so if we sent Ishan Kishan to open their plans would flop,"&nbsp;added Kaneria.

With back-to-back defeats, Kohli is under serious pressure to keep India alive in the T20 WC. The national side lost their opening fixture to Pakistan by 10 wickets and were hammered by New Zealand, by 8 wickets, as they will now step on the field to take on a competitive Afghanistan line-up, who have two wins from three games and also boost of a healthy net run-rate.

Never seen captaincy potential in Virat Kohli, says Danish Kaneria as India near elimination in T20 WC

Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria believes that sitting Ashwin out for the second Test against England at Lord's was a poor decision by Team India.&nbsp;

He felt that Ashwin would have given the Men in Blue an advantage heading into the match. Skipper Virat went ahead with four pacers and a spinner for the second Test. He replaced injured Shardul Thakur with Ishant Sharma, instead of Ravichandran Ashwin.&nbsp;

"I want to talk about the magician, Ashwin. How is he not playing? I’ve been saying this from day 1 that Ashwin needs to play at Lord’s. He should have played ahead of Shardul Thakur. He has variations, can bowl from different angles. He has the carrom balls, and the way the pitch is turning out to be – we saw this with Moeen Ali, we saw that with Ravindra Jadeja. Ashwin has a good height, gets good bounce and the slope would have helped him even further," Kaneria said on his YouTube channel.

"No doubt the Indian bowlers bowled well – Siraj and Shami – but they need wickets. England is trailing by 245 and on Sunday, the role of spinners will increase. Ravindra Jadeja can contain runs, but Ashwin – who has bowled well and picked wickets on all kinds of surfaces – not including Ashwin I feel is a mistake by India. I hope that after this Test match, India doesn’t regret not playing Ashwin," added Kaneria.

Sri Lanka's World Cup-winning skipper Arjuna Ranatunga's 'second-string Indian team' remarks stirred a major controversy ahead of the India vs Sri Lanka limited-overs series.

"This is a second-string Indian team and their coming here is an insult on our cricket. I blame the current administration for agreeing to play with them due to television marketing needs," Ranatunga, had told reporters at his residence, according to news agency PTI.

Several former cricketers reacted to these remarks and criticised Ranatunga for these statements. Now, former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has responded to Ranatunga's comments and said that he did not expect such a remark from him.&nbsp;

"First of all, Mr. Ranatunga. You have made this statement to remain in limelight. Because only India is a team right now who have a pool of 50-60 players, strong enough to field two different sides. And even in this team, players such as Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shikhar Dhawan, Yuzvendra Chahal, Hardik Pandya keep representing India consistently," Kaneria said on his YouTube channel.

"So I just want to say that I feel sorry to hear this coming from you. You're such a big name and yet, you made such a statement to and then fell flat on your face with Sri Lanka Cricket responding to you."

"Sri Lanka cricket is on a decline. It's almost as of they've forgotten how to play cricket. You should be happy that India is sending its team to lift you out of financial crisis. The board will get sponsors, funds and what not," Kaneria explained.

"Don't think such a statement was needed. These things only create friction between boards. I think Ranatunga must have learnt his lesson or when India would hammer Sri Lanka comprehensively, then he'll understand."

Sharma is the only cricketer to have three double tons in ODIs, whereas, just one in Test cricket. The batsman has been in sublime form and will play a vital role for India in the highly anticipated finals against New Zealand.&nbsp;

Kaneria went on to say that Rohit Sharma has much better technique than Indian skipper Virat Kohli.&nbsp;

"No doubt, Kohli belongs to a different class altogether but I feel Rohit is better than him technique-wise. Kohli is a superstar, a legend but Rohit's has a knack of getting big scores. Although that has not happened in a while, every big player I feel scores big in important matches. He is due for a double-century," Kaneria said on his YouTube channel.

Former Pak bowler added that the conditions in Southampton will suit Rohit Sharma which increases his chances to score a daddy hundred.&nbsp;

"The wicket in Southampton will suit him and I believe he is a key player. It is important that he scores runs and I am sure he will make big runs because that’s the kind of player he is. In Australia he couldn’t get a big score but that doesn’t mean he can’t. Rohit will be the key player for India in batting. Everyone has to score runs, but like I said, Rohit will be key," Kaneria added.

Former Pakistan Mohammad Amir had recently commented that Rohit Sharma is 'to bowl to' and that the prolific Indian opener struggled with an in-swinger.&nbsp;

"I find it easy to bowl to him (Rohit). I feel that I can get him out both ways. He struggles against the in-swinger from a left-armer and as well as against the ball that goes away early on," Amir had said.

However, this statement did not go down well former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria. He felt that the comment, by the former left-arm pacer, holds no significance.&nbsp;

“Mohammad Amir, you want to remain in headlines, no doubt. You have been a wonderful bowler for Pakistan. When you debuted, you made quite a name for yourself. You used to make the ball swing both ways with the new ball. You’ve troubled many batsmen and there’s nothing to take away from it. You troubled India in the Champions Trophy final and gave their batsmen a tough time in the Asia Cup as well,” Kaneria said on his YouTube channel.

He compared's Amir's remarks to that of Abdul Razzaq, who commented on Jasprit Bumrah.&nbsp;

“But such statements are made when players are about to face each other in an upcoming or an ongoing series. Neither are we going to have an India vs Pakistan series, nor are you going to bowl to Rohit Sharma. You’ve said something out of the blue, similar to what Abdul Razzaq had said about Jasprit Bumrah. So, it is fine if you want to be in the limelight by making such statements. I understand that a bowler likes to say such things, express himself by saying stuff like ‘he’s my bunny, I like to get him out’.”

“Rohit Sharma is a player who has scored so many double-centuries, and on top of that, he is a run-machine. There is hardly a player who plays spinners and fast bowlers better than him. And as far as you are concerned, you no longer have that pace or swing, because of which you couldn’t perform for the last two years and were axed from the team. So you come back, perform and when he is against you, and then make such statements. It will make for an exciting battle,” Kaneria added.&nbsp;

Cricket: Danish Kaneria lashes out at Mohammad Amir on his comments on Rohit Sharma

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar said that his remarks on ex-teammate Danish Kaneria that he was discriminated for being a Hindu were taken out of context.

Akhtar, however, said that he stood by his statement and added, it was only one or two players who discriminated against Kaneria, not the whole Pakistan team.

Akhtar earlier said that a few Pakistani cricketers were reluctant to even eat with him because he was a Hindu.

Speaking on a cricket show Shoaib Akhtar revealed how Pakistan players mistreated Kaneria, the former leg spinner, for being a Hindu.

Akhtar said that the spinner was never given due credit for his performances and that he was constantly humiliated by his teammates.

Meanwhile, Danish Kaneria confirmed Shoaib Akhtar's allegations and said that he was humiliated for being a Hindu.

''Whatever Shoaib Akhtar has said is absolutely true, I was humiliated by my teammates...I was scared to reveal names earlier but I am ready to reveal names now,'' he was quoted as saying.

Kaneria is among a few Hindu cricketers to play for Pakistan's international cricket.

He played 61 test matches for the country before being banned by International Cricket Council (ICC) for his alleged role in spot-fixing.

Kaneria is fourth on the list of bowlers with most Test wickets for Pakistan behind only fast bowlers Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and former captain and Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Shoaib Akhtar says remarks on Danish Kaneria taken out of context

Former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar dropped a bombshell last night by admitting that leg spinner Danish Kaneria was ostracised by a few players, not due to his cricketing skills but because of being a Hindu playing for Pakistan.&nbsp;

Kaneria had played at a time when Pakistan cricket consciously adopted a religious identity, an identity which had no space for the minority
&nbsp;
Danish Kaneria who played 61 tests for Pakistan and bagged 261 wickets, fourth on the all-time list behind greats Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and the country's current Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Kaneria was only the second Hindu to play for Pakistan after his maternal uncle Anil Dalpat.

Akhtar's revelations saw Kaneria come forward and detail his 'alleged victimisation'

The reason we say alleged is due to Kaneria's colourful past of being less than honest with the truth.

He is serving a match ban for match-fixing and admitted in 2018 after six years that he had lied through his trial in England.

Kaneria followed a line of great Pakistan leg spinners from Abdul Qadir to Mushtaq Ahmed and remains the most successful spinner in Pakistan test cricket.

Religious persecution within a team is unheard off but the time frame of Akhtar's allegations correspond to a turning point in Pakistan cricket where religious identity came to define the national team.

Pakistan cricketers were always flamboyant, take Imran khan for example.

Imran was not just the man who ran Pakistan cricket, he was a style icon and a playboy who had well-publicised dalliances with some of the most glamorous women on the planet.

The next generation of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and a few more were caught smoking marijuana on a tour of West Indies in the 1990s.

It all started to change under Inzamam ul Haq's captaincy in 2003 and with Javed Miandad as head coach.

It became the norm to see the Pakistan team praying in the middle of practice session and every wicket or milestone celebrated with a public display of religiosity.

Contrast this with just a handful of players doing the 'Sajda' after the seminal world cup triumph of 1992.

Keen observers of Pakistan cricket have pointed out former captain Saeed Anwar's influence in this change.

A dashing and stylish opener, Anwar turned to religion after the tragic death of his young daughter in 2001.

Gradually senior players of the time including Inzamam, Saqlain Mushtaq and Mushtaq Mohammed started sporting beards and an unwritten code was established.

It was thought that religion would discipline a team that could enthral and exasperate fans in equal measure.

Yousuf Youhana, long tipped to be a captain in waiting would ultimately convert from Christianity and become Mohammed Yousuf and did captain Pakistan eventually.

That religious phase would get toned down under Misbah ul Haq's captaincy at the beginning of this decade. It is still there but not in your face as it was in the first decade of this century.

Pakistan Cricket Team: From flamboyance to religious discrimination

Legendary pace bowler <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/watch-former-pakistan-pacer-shoaib-akhtar-calls-sarfaraz-ahmed-fat-and-unfit-223491">Shoaib Akhtar</a> has alleged that the Pakistan team treated former leg-spin bowler Danish Kaneria badly because of his faith.

Shoaib Akhtar alleged that his teammate Danish Kaneria faced discrimination at the hands of a few Pakistani cricketers since he was a Hindu.

The team members were reluctant to even eat with him because he was a Hindu, he alleged during a cricket show.

Akhtar added that the Pakistan spinner was never given due credit for his performances and that he was constantly humiliated by his teammates.

"In my career, I fought with two people in the team when they started talking on regionalism. Things like 'who is from Karachi, Punjab or Peshawar', that used to&nbsp;infuriate me," Shoaib said during the show.

"So what if someone is a Hindu, he is doing well for the team. The same Hindu won the Test for us against England. If he is taking a bagful of wickets for Pakistan, he should play. We could not have won the series without Kaneria's effort but not many gave him credit for that," the former Pakistan pace bowler added.

Danish Kaneria was mistreated in Pakistan team for being a Hindu, alleges Shoaib Akhtar

Former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has admitted his role in a spot-fixing case involving former Essex teammate Mervyn Westfield on Thursday, more than six years after he was banned by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

Westfield was jailed for four months after pleading guilty to accepting a payment to concede a set number of runs off an over in a 40-overs English county match against Durham in 2009.

Kaneria, who had repeatedly denied any involvement in trying to engineer particular situations in a game, was banned for life by the ECB in June 2012 for "cajoling and pressurising" Westfield into accepting money.

"My name is Danish Kaneria and I admit that I was guilty of the two charges brought against me by the England and Wales Cricket Board in 2012," the 37-year-old told Al Jazeera.&nbsp;

"I have become strong enough to make this decision, because you cannot live a life with lies."

Kaneria remains Pakistan`s most successful spinner with 261 wickets in 61 tests.&nbsp;

He last played for Pakistan against England at Trent Bridge Test in 2010, and has not appeared in any first-class game since March 2012.

"I want to apologise to Mervyn Westfield, my Essex team-mates, my Essex cricket club, my Essex cricket fans. I say sorry to Pakistan," Kaneria added.

"If the ECB and ICC (The International Cricket Council) and other bodies would give me a second chance I can help to educate young people in cricket, teach them that if you do wrong you are finished like me."

Ex-Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria admits role in Westfield spot-fixing case

Banned Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria Thursday said he finally confessed to spot-fixing after years of denial to get closure for his mistakes and sought forgiveness from the country's "shocked" cricket community.

"I just want the cricket board, my fans and the Pakistani people to understand my situation and forgive me. I made a grave mistake in associating with a bookmaker(Anu Bhatt) and not reporting it to the concerned authorities and I have paid the price for it," Kaneria told PTI.

"I am gutted at the moment because it is not easy to come out like this after basically lying for six years. I had to do it now because it was a burden on me and I just couldn't take the stigma of being called a spot-fixer any longer and denying it," Kaneria said.

Kaneria, who will turn 38 in December and who took 261 wickets in 61 Tests, said he wanted to rebuild his life and hoped the cricket authorities would accept his apology and show compassion.

"What I did was very wrong...I hope the people forgive me," he said.&nbsp;

"My accounts have been checked in this case and they can be checked again. My mistake was getting close to this guy, (alleged match-fixer) Anu Bhatt who became like a family friend to us after he came to Pakistan and we went to India in 2005/06. He virtually started blackmailing me," he added.&nbsp;

Kaneria is serving a life ban since 2012 for indulging in spot-fixing in English county matches. The ban was imposed on him by the English Cricket Board.

"I can give back to the game by telling all young players don't get involved in these things and stay away from people like Anu Bhatt," he asserted.

But Pakistan's cricket community was left "shocked and betrayed".

"I am gutted because in the early days when Danish's case came up. I met with the Pakistan Cricket Board officials with his case documents to convince them that he (Kaneria) should be heard by the PCB. I believed he was innocent," Pakistan's former Test captain Rashid Latif said.

Latif said Kaneria's confession was a big let-down for the Pakistan cricket community.

"...You can't help feel being betrayed by him," Latif said.

Former leg-spinner Abdul Qadir said Kaneria's confession was a big blow to the image of Pakistan cricket.

"God knows what these players think about. We get publicity for all the wrong reasons, spot-fixing and doping cases. I am really sad today to hear about Kaneria's confession after he lied to all of us for six years," Qadir said.

Former Test opener, chief selector and national team coach Mohsin Khan said he felt let down but was also sympathetic.

"But I also think Kaneria has done the right thing now even after six years. I think his conscience was bothering him. He is already serving a life ban since 2012.

"Perhaps the authorities can talk to him and try to reduce his ban because worst has happened in Pakistan cricket," he said.&nbsp;

The ECB banned the leg-spinner for life and also sent his Essex teammate, Mervyn Westfield to jail for his involvement in the matter.

Kaneria played his last Test on the tour of England in 2010 after which the PCB withdrew him from the squad when it was reported that the English Cricket Board was investigating the leg-spinner for fixing in county matches.

It was on the 2010 tour of England that Pakistan's then captain Salman Butt and pace bowlers, Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Aamir were also found involved in spot-fixing and later banned for five-years each.

The trio completed there bans in 2016 and are back playing cricket. While Aamir has made a comeback to the Pakistan team, Butt and Asif are playing regular domestic cricket.

Last year the PCB also launched an investigation into spot-fixing in the Pakistan Super League and as a result of the inquiries, batsmen, Sharjeel Khan, Khalid Latif, Shahzaib Hasan and Nasir Jamshed were banned for differing periods.

Banned Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria Thursday said he finally confessed to spot-fixing after years of denial to get closure for his mistakes and sought forgiveness from the country's "shocked" cricket community.

"What I did was very wrong...I hope the people forgive me," he said. "My accounts have been checked in this case and they can be checked again. My mistake was getting close to this guy, (alleged match-fixer) Anu Bhatt who became like a family friend to us after he came to Pakistan and we went to India in 2005/06. He virtually started blackmailing me," he added. "Perhaps the authorities can talk to him and try to reduce his ban because worst has happened in Pakistan cricket," he said. The ECB banned the leg-spinner for life and also sent his Essex teammate, Mervyn Westfield to jail for his involvement in the matter.
