Kings XI Punjab had a comfortable 5-wicket win against Delhi Capitals in Match 38 of the 2020 IPL, at Dubai. Delhi put up 164/5, a score largely made possible by Shikhar Dhawan, who batted through the innings with an unbeaten 106 in 61 balls. Having slammed 101 not out in his previous match, against Chennai, Dhawan became the first in IPL history to score hundreds in consecutive matches.

However, that turned out to be inadequate once Chris Gayle (29 in 13) launched a furious onslaught, following which Nicholas Pooran (53 in 28) and Glenn Maxwell (32 in 24) added 69 in 40 balls. Punjab won with an over to spare.

In My11 Circle Cricbuzz Live, Lisa Sthalekar lauded Dhawan’s superb effort: “He picked up where he had left off [against Chennai]. His ability to play the spinners really well was an element of this game that just keeps building.”

“What I loved was the way he swept – the sweeps and the slog-sweeps because they targeted him with the off-spinner,” concurred Joy Bhattacharjya. “He changed the angle. It was not going to square leg. Because it was coming in down and coming early, he could pick his gap.

Reminding that Dhawan holds the IPL record for most fours hit, Bhattacharjya added: “He is basically a four-hitter … Fours are his bread and butter. He finds the gaps, finds them consistently, and because of his game, he finds them safely as well.”

It was an easy win in the end, Punjab had multiple lapses. “The biggest enemy or the toughest opposition Kings XI have is Kings XI themselves. Their previous record, the number of times they have stuffed up … Somehow they managed to keep Delhi in the match.”

Gayle took 26 off the fifth over during the chase, putting Punjab on track. “You can see how determined he was and how frustrated and annoyed when he got out. This is actually a key sign for Punjab … If Christopher Henry Gayle is caring that much … means that he is hungrier, and he wants more runs.”

IPL 2020: Shikhar Dhawan is a four-hitter, fours are his bread and butter, opines Joy Bhattacharjya

Kings XI Punjab captain KL Rahul said that his pace spearhead Mohammed Shami wanted to bowl six yorkers in the Super Over while defending just five runs in their dramatic IPL match against Mumbai Indians here on Sunday.

The match ended in a tie in the regulation 20 overs and KXIP could only score five runs in the first Super Over but Shami bowled brilliantly to restrict MI to the same score. KXIP eventually won the match in the second Super Over.

"You can never prepare for Super Overs. No team does. So you have to trust your bowler's gut. You trust your bowler, and let them believe their instinct and gut," Rahul said at the post-match presentation.

"He (Shami) was very clear he wanted to go six yorkers. He has been phenomenal, and keeps getting better every game. It is important that senior players win the games for the team."

Rahul, who was named man of the match for his 77, expressed happiness at the victory but said his side would not want to make a habit of winning like this.

"It is not the first time. But we don't want to make a habit out of it. We will take the two points in the end. It doesn't always happen the way you plan so you don't really know how to stay balanced.

"I was just hoping we get over the line because the boys have been working really really hard. In the games that we have lost, even then we have played well and just not been able to get over the line."

He said the wicket was slightly slower and so he knew it would be important to get runs in the Powerplay.

"I knew Chris and Pooran... I trust them to take down spinners. So Chris coming in has made my job easier as a batter."

On his side winning two back-to-back close matches, he said, "We still want to take it one game at a time. It is sweet after the kind of matches we have lost but the talk in the dressing room is to focus on the process.

"We know we need to win everything from here, but we can't forget the processes that lead to a win."

Mumbai Indians batsman Kieron Pollard said the match showed that every run counted.

"In T20 cricket, 1 run and 2 runs are very very crucial. I am sure it was great for viewership. KXIP got the better of us and deserved the two points. KL again batted beautifully, going down to a Super Over, congratulations to them," he said.

"Around the 11-12 over, we knew we were a couple of overs behind. Getting 170-odd, that was a good total - above-par on a track that was on the slower side. With the dimensions, we thought we can defend that."

Despite the loss, Pollard said his side played good cricket.

"It's a matter of trying to improve each and every time. There are a couple of areas we need to improve on. We have a four-day break, enough time to reflect. The guys are confident in the dressing room.

"I was told that he (Rohit) is not feeling well (after the loss). We'll see what happens. He's a fighter," said the West Indian who remained not out on 34 off just 12 balls.

Asked how MI will take the energy-sapping loss, he said, "It's a game of cricket, you go out there to do your best, you prepare, there's a process and the situation dictates what happens.

"We were on the losing side tonight. We should have won this I believe deep down but these things happen."

Shami wanted to bowl six yorkers in Super Over: Rahul

It took Kings XI Punjab not one but two Super Overs to beat Mumbai Indians in Match 36 of the 2020 IPL, at Dubai. After the teams were tied on 176, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami conceded 5 runs in their respective Super Overs. Mumbai then took 11 off Chris Jordan’s over, but Chris Gayle’s first-ball six off Trent Boult left Mayank Agarwal to merely complete the formalities.

In My11 Circle Cricbuzz Live, Joy Bhattacharjya marked out Shami’s Super Over as the turning point: “That, for me, is the game there. Did you notice how Punjab looked after that happened? They knew they had escaped a bullet … And they said, ‘now we have a chance’.” Asked to defend a target of 6, Shami conceded 5.

Lisa Sthalekar, on the other hand, criticised Rohit Sharma’s batting during that over: “What was Rohit Sharma doing? He was kind of lapping – that’s not his shot, that’s not what he does! It’s just amazing what pressure does to players, and experienced players!” Rohit Sharma got 2 singles off the 3 balls he faced from Shami in that over.

Even before that excellent Super Over, Mumbai’s “go-to guy” Bumrah had pegged Punjab back with figures of 4-0-24-3, earning accolades from Sthalekar: “The fact that Rohit Sharma turns to him when he needs a wicket, he throws him the ball and goes ‘go on, son, can you get me a wicket? And he does! How much pressure he is always under!”

KL Rahul led Punjab’s chase with a 51-ball 77, becoming the first Indian batsman to reach the 500-run mark in each of three consecutive IPL seasons. “I feel he has been given the captaincy of a very tough franchise,” pointed out Gaurav Kapur. “The Punjab captaincy is a revolving door. He is just gold in every season. I don’t want him to lose this golden touch with the burden of captaincy of a team that has been losing”.

Quinton de Kock top-scored for Mumbai with a 43-ball 53, his fourth fifty in five matches. Sthalekar explained the reason behind de Kock’s form: “Obviously captaincy for South Africa has certainly helped him, maybe read the game and know his role even better.”

The win took Punjab to sixth place, ahead of Chennai and Rajasthan. Mumbai are currently second, behind only Delhi.

IPL 2020, CSK vs RR Preview: Battle to stay alive in the playoff race

Mumbai Indians all-rounder Kieron Pollard feels that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has taken over the mantle from Sri Lankan Lasith Malinga to become the lynchpin of the four-time IPL champions' bowling attack.

After picking up the crucial wickets of KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and Nicholas Pooran in the stipulated 20 overs, Bumrah (3/24) bowled an excellent Super Over against Kings XI Punjab, conceding just five runs.

However, it was not enough as Mohammad Shami bowled an equally impressive over to lead the match to a second Super Over in which KXIP snatched a win at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.

"He's a world-class cricketer. He has been number one in a couple of formats for a long period of time. He has learned and has grown leaps and bounds for us at Mumbai Indians...We have comfort in him," Pollard said at the post-match press conference.

"A couple of years ago, we had a fit and fair Lasith Malinga and he (Bumrah) has taken over that mantle now," he added.
Malinga, the highest wicket-taker in the IPL, opted out this year citing personal reasons.
Chasing five runs in the first Super Over, skipper Rohit Sharma and Quinton De Kock failed to take MI across the finish line.

In the second Super Over, Pollard and Hardik Pandya helped the defending champions score 11 runs.

"Obviously there are decision-makers to make the decision, you know we can look at those things and say that's where we lost the game but we played a very good game of cricket. We batted well," said Pollard.

Mumbai have lost two games via Super Overs. They were defeated by Royal Challengers Bangalore earlier in the tournament.
Their five-match winning streak broken by KXIP, the defending champions are placed second with 12 points.

"Just a matter of improvement, each and every time we step on the cricket field it is to improve and to do better. We will look back and analyse the game and we will come up with a better plan and hopefully get two points in the next game," said the all-rounder.
KXIP pacer Chris Jordan, who bowled the second Super Over for his team, was delighted to be on the winning side.

"I feel like the way we have played a lot of our games this season, they could have been very easily ended with us on the winning side," Jordan said during the post-match press conference.

"Unfortunately, that was not the case. I think from the last two games, specially the kind of team spirit and camaraderie we have shown as an entire team and entire franchise has been second to none.

"Just glad that we have a little bit of luck going our way now but we can't rest on that," he added.

Jordon conceded 11 runs of the second Super Over. Chris Gayle then hit the first ball bowled by Trent Boult for a six before opener Mayank Agarwal cracked successive fours as KXIP notched up an incredible win to keep their IPL play-off hopes alive.

The presence of the big-hitting Gayle in the playing XI has also inspired the team.

"You can see the impact the legend himself, Gayle, made in the last two games. Hitting a fifty after not playing for a while and then finish off the game in the Super Over for us. It is great to have, what I considered to be a great of the game, in our team. His energy is unbelievable," Jordan said.

KXIP have got the better of MI and RCB in their last two games, however, KL Rahul and his men have been guilty of making their run chases too close and the pacer hopes his side can close in matches quicker.

"If we want to take it to the next level, we have got to keep doing simple things and hopefully finish off games a bit quick as well," Jordan added.

IPL 2020: Bumrah has taken over the mantle from Malinga, says Pollard

Pakistan's head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq on Monday named 22 probables for the ODI and T20I series against Zimbabwe, insisting he has opted for experience in the 50-over matches and provided extended run to the youngsters in the T20I format.

Pakistan have not played ODIs since the home series against Sri Lanka 12 months ago and the Rawalpindi matches will be part of ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League from which the seven top-ranked sides, apart from hosts India, will qualify directly for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

For the Lahore T20Is, the selectors have preferred continuity and consistency, while acknowledging the just concluded National T20 Cup had provided some exciting talent, which will be considered for the Pakistan and Shaheens’ next month tour to New Zealand and early next year’s home T20Is.

The selectors have rewarded Central Punjab’s Abdullah Shafiq with a call-up after the 20-year-old former Pakistan U19 batsman finished as the seventh most successful batsman in the National T20 Cup with 358 runs with a strike-rate of over 133. Abdullah scored a century on his T20 debut, becoming only the second player in history to make a century on both first-class and T20 debuts.

Shoaib Malik, who was player of the final, has made way for Abdullah Shafiq, while Rohail Nazir has been named as Mohammad Rizwan’s back-up wicketkeeper. Sarfaraz Ahmed, who was part of the squad for the England tour, has been encouraged to feature in the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, starting 25 October, so that he rediscovers better form ahead of the New Zealand tour.

Fast bowlers Hasan Ali and Naseem Shah were not considered for selection as they are recovering from injuries, but have been advised to play in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy to prove their fitness before they are considered for selection.

Probables:

Batsmen - Abdullah Shafiq, Abid Ali, Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Haider Ali, Haris Sohail, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imam-ul-Haq, Khushdil Shah and Mohammad Hafeez

Wicketkeepers - Mohammad Rizwan and Rohail Nazir

Spinners - Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Usman Qadir and Zafar Gohar

Fast bowlers - Faheem Ashraf, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Hasnain, Musa Khan, Shaheen Shah and Wahab Riaz

Pakistan head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq: “The National T20 Cup saw some outstanding individual performances.A few leading performers may feel disappointed that they have been unable to break into the squad. But, I want to reassure them that they will remain in consideration for the New Zealand tour and early next year’s home series. All they now need to do is to carry those impressive run of forms in the upcoming domestic competitions.

“Furthermore, the present T20I squad already comprises youngsters who have played very few matches. As such, it is logical and sensible that we give them the support and confidence by providing them extended runs so that they can show what they are capable of at the highest level and cement their places for future assignments.

“We have resisted the temptation of experimenting in the ODIs for three simple reasons. Firstly, we cannot afford to be complacent and have to respect each and every opponent irrespective of their strength or international ranking. Secondly, every ODI counts as it leads towards automatic qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, and thirdly, we have not played any ODI cricket in the past 12 months.

“Abdullah Shafiq has been rewarded for his tremendous potential and performance. He has been identified as a future prospect and, therefore, drafted into the squad as part of his development.

“Seniors like Shoaib Malik and Sarfaraz Ahmed have not been picked for this series, but I want to categorically state that their careers are not over by any means as performance remains the only criterion for selection. These are strategic decisions as Shoaib’s absence will provide players like Abdullah Shafiq, Haider Ali and Khushdil Shah better chances of featuring in the upcoming matches.

“We have followed the same philosophy while leaving out Mohammad Amir and Usman Shinwari so that bowlers like Mohammad Hasnain, Musa Khan and Haris Rauf can get an extended run.

“Mohammad Hafeez and Wahab Riaz provide us that useful experience in the batting and bowling respectively, that will benefit the youngsters.

“Similarly, not many will disagree that on present form, Mohammad Rizwan is the first-choice wicketkeeper in both the white-ball formats. With an eye on future and as part of the succession plan, Rohail Nazir has been chosen as Rizwan’s back-up wicketkeeper. Instead of Sarfaraz sitting on the substitute bench, it makes sense that he plays in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy so that he retains his fitness and rediscovers form for the tour for the longer and more demanding tour of New Zealand.”

The probables will assemble in Lahore on 21 October for Covid-19 testing and after observing a five-day isolation period, during which they will play two 50-over matches at the Gaddafi Stadium, will travel to Rawalpindi on Monday, 26 October.

The probables for three T20Is will be shortlisted after the ODIs and players unlikely to feature in them will be advised to play in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy third round matches, which will commence from 6 November.

Pakistan probables for ODIs and T20Is:

Babar Azam (captain), Shadab Khan (vice-captain), Abdullah Shafiq, Abid Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haider Ali, Haris Rauf, Haris Sohail, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Imam-ul-Haq, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Rizwan, Musa Khan, Rohail Nazir, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Usman Qadir, Wahab Riaz and Zafar Gohar

Series schedule (ODIs to start 1200, T20Is to commence 1530):

30 Oct – 1st ODI, Rawalpindi.

1 Nov – 2nd ODI, Rawalpindi.

3 Nov – 3rd ODI, Rawalpindi.

7 Nov – 1st T20I, Lahore.

8 Nov – 2nd T20I, Lahore.

10 Nov – 3rd T20I, Lahore.

Delhi Capitals announce Amit Mishra's replacement for IPL 2020

All hell broke loose when the cricketing world feasted on three Super Overs in two matches on Sunday as the Indian Premier League (IPL) touched new heights when it comes to intense encounters and nail-biting drama. While fans were gushing over the fact that the day match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders went to the Super Over, little did they know that the evening game between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab will let them witness two Super Overs in a single match – the first such occurrence in IPL history.

The Indian Premier League is known for its quality and is regarded as the best T20 tournament in the world. The matches on Sunday just gave it a seal of approval. And yes, it was not the first time that matches went to Super Over in IPL 2020, remember DC vs KXIP and RCB vs MI?

The most heartening fact about IPL 2020 is the sub-stories it provides. In the first match, it was former KKR captain and current captain, Dinesh Karthik and Eoin Morgan who stitched a crucial partnership before Lockie Ferguson, playing his first game in IPL 2020, took over the charge with the ball. DK's conversations with Varun Chakravarthy are something which fans look forward to whenever KKR play. The young Abdul Samad showing his hitting prowess in the death overs. Kuldeep Yadav making a brave comeback.

In the second match, young Arshdeep Singh picking two crucial wickets of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan. Or substitute fielder Anukul Roy running to take the catch of Nicholas Pooran in the Super Over. Or even the best batsman of IPL 2020, KL Rahul, trying the uncanny reverse scoop in the Super Over. IPL is magic!

While David Warner smashed Andre Russell for 17 runs in the final over of SRH vs KKR match to take the game to the Super Over. Deepak Hooda and Chris Jordan, for Sunrisers Hyderabad, just managed seven runs off Trent Boult in the 20th over of second innings to take the MI vs KXIP game to the Super Over.

For KKR, Lockie Ferguson’s heroics with the ball, in main match and Super Over, eased them to 10 points in IPL 2020 points table, the MI vs KXIP match had different drama. After being tied at 176 in regular 20-over affair, Jasprit Bumrah restricted Punjab to just five runs in first Super Over before Mohammed Shami steamed in to repeat the same for his Team India team-mate.

Chris Jordan with the ball for Punjab in the second Super Over, conceded 11 runs. It could have been 15 but an acrobatic stop by Mayank Agarwal in the boundary line didn’t allow it. Next, a six by ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle and a boundary by Agarwal to finish the job for Kings XI Punjab.

Did you know: It was the second time in IPL history that a Super Over was also tied. The last time it happened in 2014, in the match between RR and KKR in Abu Dhabi. However, RR were declared winners on the basis of boundary-count rule.

While it was not the first time that two Super Overs were played in day in a particular tournament, it was the first time in IPL history that the incident happened. The first time two Super Overs were played in the same tournament on same day was on August 27, 2011: Lancashire v Leicestershire and Hampshire v Somerset.

With the IPL throwing twist and tales in every corner, the action is going to be more intense than ever with race to playoffs picking pace with every passing match.

Ferguson, playing his first match in Indian Premier League (IPL) picked up three wickets in his four-over quota before coming back and dismissing both David Warner and Abdul Samad in the Super Over while restricting SRH for just two runs.

“I think getting David Warner out especially at the start of the super over [was my favourite wicket]. It's great having Morgs at the top off the mark with his calmness and of course I had my plan which was working throughout the game. Look we'll take this win and enjoy tonight, it was a very good win on a tough wicket. It was nice to put the icing on the cake after the batsmen's effort,” Ferguson said after collecting the Man of the Match award.

Sunrisers Hyderabad, surprisingly chose to field first after winning the toss in Abu Dhabi, which has favoured team batting first. KKR were off to a decent start in the powerplay but lost Rahul Tripathi soon. Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana played handy knocks of 36 and 29 respectively but failed to make it big. Andre Russell’s poor form continued for KKR in IPL 2020 as the Windies brute was caught for 9.

Chennai Super Kings opted for Ravindra Jadeja to bowl the last over against Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 on Saturday as it was revealed that Dwayne Bravo went off the field after suffering an injury. Bravo was the final over option for CSK but Dhoni had to go with Jadeja as the Windies all-rounder was unavailable to bowl.

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming has revealed the extent of Bravo’s injury while revealing that it is serious enough to keep him out for a few days or couple of weeks. Fleming further said that Bravo was disappointed that he wasn’t able to bowl the final over.

"He (Bravo) seems to have a right groin injury, obviously it was serious enough to keep him from coming back to the field, he is just really disappointed that he was not able to bowl the final over, that's pretty much for what he is in the team for. He would have to be reassessed going forward, at this stage, you would imagine that it would take a few days or a couple of weeks,” Fleming said.

Jadeja was left exposed against two left-handers – Axar Patel and Shikhar Dhawan – as DC finished off the match with two massive sixes to bag another win in IPL 2020.

"Unfortunately Dwayne Bravo got injured so he could not bowl the last over, naturally he is a death bowler, that's the way our season has been going, we are having challenges thrown at us. Jadeja was not planned to bowl at the death, but with Bravo getting injured, we did not have any other option. We did well to create a situation where it could have worked for us but we have to keep working hard and turn it around," Fleming said at the post-match press conference.

Following the report, Mr Narine was placed on the IPL Warning List. “KKR requested for an Official Assessment of Mr Narine’s action from the IPL Suspect Bowling Action Committee, submitting action footage in slow motion with back and side angles. The Committee carefully reviewed all the deliveries of action footage sent of Mr Narine with the naked eye and has come to the conclusion that the elbow-bend appears to be within the range of permissible limits. The Committee also noted that Mr. Narine should reproduce the same action going forward in the IPL 2020 matches as presented to the Committee in the video footage. “Mr Narine has now been removed from the IPL Suspect Action Warning List.”

Darren Bravo and Shimron Hetmyer were named Friday in the West Indies squad for a proposed two-Test series in New Zealand, having turned down invitations for the tour of England earlier this year.

The top-order batsmen both opted out of the Test series against England in July that marked the return of international cricket following the coronavirus shutdown.

Bravo and Hetmyer have been recalled along with fast-bowling all-rounder Keemo Paul, who also skipped the England tour, as part of a 15-man squad backed up by six reserve players.

Hetmyer and Paul were also included in the T20 squad for a three-match series that precedes the two Tests.

West Indies are due to play the first Test in Hamilton from December 3-7. The second is scheduled for Wellington from December 11-15.

Both series are subject to clearance from the two teams' cricket boards and the New Zealand government.

"The return of Darren Bravo, Shimron Hetmyer and Keemo Paul will bolster the team," said West Indies chief selector Roger Harper.

"I expect that Darren will solidify the top-order, hopefully making it more productive, while Shimron gives the squad more options in the middle-order and it is another opportunity for him to show how good a player he is.

"Keemo provides another wicket taking seam option."

All-rounder Andre Russell and top-order batsmen Lendl Simmons and Evin Lewis have chosen not to participate in the tour.

Shai Hope was omitted from the Test squad following a sustained poor run of form. He scored just 105 runs in six innings in three Tests against England.

"Shai is a player who I think has a tremendous future in Test cricket but at the moment he needs to reorganise his Test match game and get his batting in the longest version, back to its best," said Harper.

Proud of my performances: 'Superman' AB de Villiers reflect on his terrific form in IPL 2020

Indian Premier League (IPL) is known as a platform where ‘talent meets opportunity’. While many youngsters have used the platform to improve their game and gain the much-needed experience to take their talent a notch-above, many crumble under the sheer pressure and demand of arguably the best T20 tournament in the world.

One player, who has impressed in IPL is Kings XI Punjab’s left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh, who made his debut for the franchise in 2019, and has continued to impress with his control, variations while holding his nerves in pressure situations.

In an exclusive interview with WION’s Subhayan Chakraborty, Kings XI Punjab pacer Arshdeep Singh spoke about sharing the dressing room with some of the biggest names in world cricket, KL Rahul’s captaincy, learning from Anil Kumble and Charl Langeveldt, bowling to Andre Russell and more.

Arshdeep has been a welcome addition to KXIP’s bowling unit in IPL 2020 and the youngster has made headlines by bowling crucial overs for the Punjab outfit while picking up four wickets in three matches. He further boasts an eye-catching economy of 7.80.

After having a successful trial in 2019, Arshdeep impressed the KXIP staff and scouts with his execution in death overs and was picked up by the franchise in the IPL 2019 auction. Still carving his way to the top, Arshdeep is steadily becoming a household name as he terms the KXIP franchise as a “family”. The 21-year-old is beaming with confidence while putting up some impressive numbers for his side in IPL 2020.

“It is always a special feeling playing in the IPL and for Kings XI Punjab. Honestly, it is no less than a family and I have always felt comfortable playing for this franchise,” Arshdeep told WION in an exclusive interview.

“It’s all about confidence, I think. Last season, I was new to the tournament and different situations this tournament puts you in but this season, it doesn’t feel like an alien situation and I feel I belong to this competition. I have backed my abilities and continue to do so,” the member of Under-19 World Cup 2018 added.

Arshdeep has bowled in some crunch situations in the 13th edition of IPL but has left everyone impressed with the maturity he has shown with the ball.

“The plan has been to keep things simple. In the team meetings, with coach and support staff of the team, the talk is always to keep things simple and execute it. And you can see that it has come out for me well so far in this tournament.”

The likes of Mandeep Singh and Ravi Bishnoi have already hailed the influence of Anil Kumble in the dressing room and how the former Indian skipper backs his players to bring confidence factor into the play. When asked about Anil Kumble and bowling coach Charl Langeveldt, Arshdeep spoke in similar lines as he heaped praise on the coaching staff while explaining how they give him and other players the freedom to come up with their own plans.

“Both (Anil Kumble and Charl Langeveldt) have been legends of the game at their time. I am trying to pick their brains as much as possible. The experience they share is always helpful for me and other players as well. Charl just asks me to back my execution and talent and gives me the freedom to bowl according my comfort. And Anil sir is so helpful with everything. He always tells me to come to approach them or the captain and talk to them about whatever I am feeling about my bowling plans and gives me a free hand in what I want to do in a particular match or situation,” Arshdeep said.

KXIP added some big names to their squad for IPL 2020 with the likes of Sheldon Cottrell, Jimmy Neesham, Chris Jordan among many others joining in. The KXIP dressing room boasts some huge names in the world of cricket. For Arshdeep, it is simple. Just keep picking their brains and keep learning.

“It is a big boost for me as I have been learning plenty of things from these guys. They might not enjoy my company that much as I always keep on asking questions” (laughs) but I make sure that I take everything from them”

KXIP also have some good domestic talent in their ranks. While there is always competition for places within the team, Arshdeep is of the view that regardless of whoever finds his name in the playing XI or in the bench, the mantra is to keep backing the team.

“There is a healthy competition. It is really good to have great bunch of youngsters in the squad. We can share a laugh and talk about things. Some of us know each other from under-19 days. It is about enjoying each other’s company and not about who will play or who will sit out. We just back each other regardless of whoever play”

Arshdeep made a massive impact in KXIP’s match against KKR where he conceded just 25 runs off his four-over quota while sending Andre Russell packing in the 19th over. He also had a maiden in his spell as the youngster stunned the KKR batting unit with his impeccable execution of wider deliveries at an almost perfect angle. His celebration, after dismissing Russell summed it up all.

“No one would love to bowl to Andre (laughs). But we planned about Andre a lot in the meeting with coaching staff and KL. We always plan in-depth when facing the likes of AB de Villiers or Andre Russell or other big names in T20 cricket. The plan was to keep it simple and back our plans and when the execution comes off perfectly, it feels good.

“The feeling of picking any wicket is great. The celebration came out naturally due to the heat of Abu Dhabi (laughs). But on a serious note, it was a big wicket for the team and of course, myself. So it was pure passion, you can say. It was great to get that wicket,” Arshdeep explained.

The most important thing for a youngster is to grasp everything in a bid to become better. While Arshdeep has shown great signs of improvement, he knows that players lose focus too early and doesn’t want to make the same mistake.

“My biggest learning has been that many lose their focus when they come to IPL and the environment but main thing is to keep yourself focused. Many people try too many things in IPL but for me, it is about backing my talent and skill-set," said the southpaw.

Irfan Pathan’s first-over hat-trick against Pakistan in 2006 made Arshdeep fall in love with his bowling. While Wasim Akram is the go-to favourite for all the pacers, the KXIP youngster is closely keeping a tab on how Mitchell Starc bowls and fires in those yorkers.

“When I didn’t start playing, I used to follow Irfan Pathan. His hat-trick against Pakistan made me fall in love with his bowling. And I loved watching Wasim Akram but now I am following Mitchell Starc, the yorkers he fires in are what I love the most.”

KXIP didn’t get off to the best of starts as they lost a few close matches. They aren’t in the best of position in the points table. However, things change quickly in the world of cricket and IPL is the pinnacle of twist and turns. Arshdeep thanked all the KXIP fans for supporting them while adding that they are ready to prove that they can do much better than what they did in the first phase of IPL.

“A huge thank you from me and the Kings XI Punjab family for supporting us. We are not in the best place in the points table but keep supporting us throughout our journey. A big thank you to all of you. Keep believing in us and I am sure we will prove we are better than what the points table is showing. Thank you supporting us.”

Rajasthan Royals take on Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Dubai International Stadium on Saturday as the action in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 continues in full flow. While RR have six points to their name after eight IPL 2020 matches, RCB are third in the table with 10 points under their belt after as many games.

The IPL 2020 points table would certainly pick up pace if RR manage to defeat RCB in Dubai on Saturday. However, it won’t be an easy task given the contrasting form both the teams are undergoing right now. But with RCB losing their last encounter in IPL 2020, RR would hope to inflict another defeat and regain momentum in the IPL 2020 playoff race.

In the UAE, both RR and RCB are locked with one win each against each other. However, in last five matches, RR have won thrice while RCB have won twice with a game ending in no-result. Given the slowish pitch conditions and longer boundaries in Dubai, a score of around 170 is seen as competitive. Kolkata Knight Riders, under the new leadership of Eoin Morgan, suffered a crushing eight-wicket defeat to Mumbai Indians in Abu Dhabi on Friday but wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock has said that the Mumbai outfit is still not thinking about playoffs and are taking it one game at a time.

Mumbai Indians are sitting atop the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 points table with 12 points to their name after eight matches. With MI defeating KKR yet again in IPL courtesy, de Kock’s splendid knock of 78 not-out.

"We did not plan much before this game, we know what are our strengths, it is a matter of doing what we have been doing, in our team we have a lot of experience and it is a matter of just doing the things on the field," said de Kock during the post-match press conference.

"The preparations for playoffs have not started yet, it is about taking one game at a time, whatever happens, we have to keep it simple and we need to play to our strengths. "I think the process is that we have backed Rahul Chahar. He backs himself too and that is a key in a player. He knows his talent and he knows if he has a bad game, he will come back stronger and we know that too. As a player, we can just back other players," de Kock said.

IPL 2020: Mumbai Indians not thinking about playoffs yet: Quinton de Kock

Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday dropped a huge surprise as they announced, just hours before their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 match against Mumbai Indians, that Dinesh Karthik has stepped down from captaincy with the duty to lead the side now being with Eoin Morgan.

While Karthik’s sudden decision that he wants to focus more on his batting came as a big surprise, moreover when KKR were lying at fourth spot in the points table, former KKR captain Gautam Gambhir has said that he was a bit surprised by the decision while adding the franchise management should have named Morgan as the captain of the side from the start rather than making a mid-season change.

“Cricket is not about relationships, it’s about performances and honestly, I don’t think Morgan can change a lot of things. He could’ve changed a lot of things had he captained from the start of the tournament. No one changes during the middle of the tournament. It’s nice to have a good relationship between the coach and the captain,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.

“Little surprised. He’s obviously leading KKR for the last 2 and a half years. You don’t do it in the middle of the season. KKR is not in that bad a position that someone needs to change a captain, so yeah little bit surprised,” he added.

"If KKR wanted to make this change, they should have done it at the start of the competition. If you are talking so much about a World Cup-winning captain being there in your team puts pressure on someone like Dinesh Karthik then why not just give it to Morgan straightaway, why put so much pressure on Karthik?

Chris Gayle announced he was ready to shine in the 2020 Indian Premier League with a crucial half-century for the Kings XI Punjab in his maiden innings on Thursday, having missed the first half of the campaign due to selection issues and sickness.

Chris Gayle announced he was ready to shine in the 2020 Indian Premier League with a crucial half-century for the Kings XI Punjab in his maiden innings on Thursday, having missed the first half of the campaign due to selection issues and sickness. The former West Indies captain, 41, is one of the most successful batsmen in the Twenty20 format but before Thursday he was unable to make the team this season, which is being played in the United Arab Emirates due to concern about the coronavirus pandemic in India. The self-proclaimed “Universe Boss” struck five sixes in his 45-ball 53 before he was run out on the penultimate ball with the scores tied on 171 against Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore. There was some drama in the last over with leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal conceding one run in five balls but Gayle’s compatriot, Nicholas Pooran, hit a six on the last to hand bottom-placed Punjab their second win in eight matches. “Come on man, it is the Universe Boss batting, how can I be nervous? Maybe I gave you a heart attack,” Gayle, who pointed at “The Boss” sticker on his bat after reaching fifty, told the broadcaster about the final-over drama. “I thought I had it in the bag but strange things happen in cricket. It was a good innings, my first innings and now I can finish the IPL in 2020 and make myself available for 2021. I can get out of the bubble now and go. “It was important to keep fit. I don’t want to be on the bench but I was enjoying it. I was actually beginning to get more fitter, get the six-pack going, the beach body going.” It was an unusual position for Gayle to bat at number three as the powerful left-hander has mostly been an opener. He took time to adjust but made up for his slow start with lofty hits later. “Team asked me to do a job, I deliver. It wasn’t an issue,” he said.

Former Indian wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta said he wasn’t surprised by Eoin Morgan being named the new Kolkata Knight Riders captain after Dinesh Karthik stepped down from the leadership duties in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.

KKR on Friday announced that the 2019 World Cup winning captain will take over the captaincy duties from Karthik, who helped KKR win four out of seven matches in IPL 2020 so far.

Karthik has captained KKR in 37 matches since 2018 with a record of 19 wins and 17 defeats. While KKR qualified to the playoffs in 2018, they ended fifth in the league stage last season.

"I'm not surprised with this decision because more than Dinesh Karthik's form as a batsman or captain, we also have to notice the fact that KKR had a World Cup-winning skipper in their side in Eoin Morgan.

"I felt this was on the cards as soon as KKR had picked up Morgan in the auction in 2019. Your inclined to think on these lines when you have a World Cup-winning captain in your team," the cricketer-turned-commentator, told News Tak.

However, Dasgupta stated that KKR players might struggle to adapt to Morgan’s captaincy but backed the Englishman to carry the team forward in IPL 2020.

"KKR might fall apart or flourish after this decision. Team policies, strategies and mentality changes when there is a change in leadership, especially in the middle of a season, because every captain is different. There might be a few players who might not be able to adapt to the way Morgan leads the team or can't relate to his style of captaincy.

With defender Harry Maguire going through a tough patch on the field, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer feels the England international will “bounce” back after a torrid start to the season but could be out of Premier League match against Newcastle United due to injury.

Maguire – the world’s most expensive defender, has struggled in the 2020-21 season since the Greek court case in August. The 27-year-old was handed a suspended 21-month sentence for many charges including assaulting a police officer.
On Wednesday, Maguire was sent off during England’s 1-0 defeat to Denmark in the Nations League as his poor run of form continued.

"When Harry is part of the England team that beats number-one ranked Belgium, that's just a normal day and then you get the headlines when you get the sending-off," said Solskjaer.

IPL 2020, MI vs KKR Preview: Eoin Morgan-led Kolkata look to end Mumbai domination

Royal Challengers Bangalore made some bizarre decisions during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 match against Kings XI Punjab and ended up losing by eight wickets at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Thursday. RCB skipper Virat Kohli reacted on the calls made on the field.

RCB made some rare tweaks to their batting line up as they sent Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube ahead of an in-form AB de Villiers in the batting order. While the move backfired as de Villiers was dismissed cheaply, Chris Morris and Isuru Udana, with some lusty blows in the death, made sure RCB touch the 170-run mark in 20 overs.

Kohli, opening up on the strange decisions, said the team management wanted to continue with the left-right combination while adding they were happy with the decisions despite them not coming off.

"It was quite surprising, we thought the game might finish in the 18th. A bit of pressure at the back end can confuse you, anything can happen in this game. Good performance by KXIP, we were not in the game tonight," Virat Kohli said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

"We had a chat, a message from outside about left-right combination and we wanted to go with it because they had two leggies. Sometimes things don't come off. We're pretty happy with the decisions we took, but it didn't come off," Kohli opened up on AB de Villiers batting at No.6.

"Having 170 was a decent score. The idea was to let them [Dube and Sundar] get their eye in. They bowled well. It's not a great ground for bowlers but that's not an excuse.

With Rajasthan Royals struggling in the bottom-half of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 points table and skipper Steve Smith struggling heavily with his form, speculations started that RR might drop Smith as the captain of the side for the rest of IPL 2020.

Rajasthan Royals on Twitter posted a couple of photos in praise of swashbuckling English wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler on Friday and many started speculating that he might replace Smith as the captain of RR.

However, Rajasthan Royals’ Chief Operating Officer Jake Lush McCrum dismissed the rumous of Buttler taking over captaincy duties from Smith while even RR took to Twitter to confirm it was nothing short of plain rumour.

Not only their lackluster start in the tournament but the cold form of captain Smith is coming as a major worry for the RR batting unit.

While Smith got off to a superb start in IPL 2020 with scores of 69 and 50 against Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab respectively, he has managed to score in double digits just once since then. Smith has scored 3, 5, 6, 24, 5 and 1 in the T20 tournament being held in the UAE after starting with a couple of a half-centuries.

IPL 2020: Jos Buttler to take over as Rajasthan Royals captain? RR COO quashes rumours

Dinesh Karthik on Friday stepped down as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) while handing over the captaincy duties to ICC World Cup 2019 World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan. Karthik has moved away from captaincy with a view to focus on his batting and contributing more to the team’s cause.

Karthik’s decision to step down from captaincy duties come as a major surprise as KKR have been doing well in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 and are sitting fourth in the points table with four wins in seven matches so far. Morgan will start leading KKR from their match against Mumbai Indians, scheduled for Friday in Abu Dhabi.

Venky Mysore, CEO of KKR said “we are fortunate to have leaders such as DK, who has always put the team first. It takes a lot of courage for someone like him to take a decision such as this. While we were surprised by his decision, we are respectful of his wishes. We are also fortunate that Eoin Morgan, the 2019 World Cup-winning captain, who has been the vice captain, is willing to lead the side going forward. DK and Eoin have worked brilliantly together during this tournament and although Eoin takes over as captain, this is effectively a role swap and we expect that this transition will work in a seamless manner”

Karthik was heavily criticized after KKR’s couple of defeats in the early phase of the tournament but bounced back strong with some bold decisions against Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab.

However, him stepping down from the captaincy role could be to focus more on his batting. Besides the only half-century in IPL 2020, Karthik has been pretty lackluster with the willow so far and will be hoping pressure-free cricket can bring the best out of him.

IPL 2020: Dinesh Karthik steps down from KKR captaincy, Eoin Morgan named new skipper

Chennai Super Kings beat SunRisers Hyderabad by 20 runs in Match 29 of the 2020 IPL, at Dubai. Shane Watson (42 in 38 balls) and Ambati Rayudu (41 in 34) played cautiously after Sam Curran (31 in 21) cut loose at the top, and some lusty blows from MS Dhoni (21 in 13) and Ravindra Jadeja (25* in 10) helped Chennai reach 167/6 even as Sandeep Sharma returned 4-0-18-2.

In response, Hyderabad lost their way in the middle overs, with Kane Williamson (57 in 39) playing a lone hand. Jadeja backed his cameo with 3-0-21-1 to win the Player of the Match award as Hyderabad, a batsman short, finished on 147/8.

In My11 Circle Cricbuzz Live, Joy Bhattacharjya was all in praise for Jadeja: “If you have a pitch that’s turning, he makes a deliberate effort to turn one really big … The moment you turn it a lot, doubt comes into the batsman’s mind. And then you don’t necessarily have the wicket off the turning ball, you get the wicket out of the uncertainty in the batsman’s mind, about how much it is going to turn.” Jadeja used a similar tactic to bowl Jonny Bairstow.

Harsha Bhogle praised Chennai for deploying Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu against Rashid Khan, for Rashid has not had success against either. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni Tuesday hailed Sam Curran as a "complete cricketer" for Chennai Super Kings after the England all-rounder played a key part in the team's much-needed IPL win.

The 22-year-old Curran hit 31 after opening the batting and then returned figures of 1-18 from his three overs of left-arm pace bowling as Chennai bounced back from two losses to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 20 runs in Dubai.

Curran, a left-hand batsman who was brought by Chennai for $742,000, gave the team a brisk start in his 21-ball knock before Shane Watson, who scored 42 coming one down, and Ambati Rayudu (41) guided the team to 167 for six.

Curran then shared the new ball with Deepak Chahar to breakthrough with the big wicket of skipper David Warner, caught and bowled for nine, as Hyderabad managed just 147-8.

"Curran is a complete cricketer for us and you need that seaming allrounder. He strikes the ball nicely, he can bat up the order, he plays spinners well," Dhoni said of his team's youngest member.

"He can give us those 15-45 runs if you need momentum. I feel as the tournament progresses, he'll get even more comfortable with death bowling. That's one of the reasons we kept him away at the death."

Dwayne Bravo bowled the final over of the match and returned figures of 2-25 as Chennai moved level with Hyderabad on six points from eight games in a tough first half of the Twenty20 tournament in the United Arab Emirates.

Curran, younger brother of Tom Curran who plays for Rajasthan Royals, has proved his worth for three-time IPL winners Chennai while batting in the top, middle and lower order.

"In terms of his contribution so far it has exceeded, I think, what we wanted. Probably not in his eyes because he is very competitive," Chennai coach Stephen Fleming told reporters in the post-match virtual chat.

"Every time he has had the challenge he has risen to it. He has been desperate to make a difference and I think we saw a glimpse today of what he can do for us in the future."

Ravindra Jadeja also contributed with an unbeaten 25 off 10 balls and returned to take the key wicket of England's Jonny Bairstow, bowled for 23, with his left-arm spin.

"This was one game as close to perfect as possible. One or two overs we could have been slightly better, but it was a very good game," said Dhoni.

New Zealand's Kane Williamson struck 57 off 39 deliveries but his first half-century of the season went in vain as Hyderabad kept losing wickets.
