Cricket: World Test Championship Final will be challenging but it's time to enjoy - Virat Kohli

India head coach Ravi Shastri on Wednesday said that the ICC World Test Championship should have been a best of three contest going forward and not a one-off match like the upcoming India versus New Zealand match in the inaugural edition of the tournament. India depart for the UK in the early hours of Thursday to participate in the WTC against the Black Caps in Southampton, scheduled to start from June 18. <o:p></o:p>

The Virat Kohli-led outfit would go on to play five matches against England starting August 4. <o:p></o:p>

"I think ideally, in the long run, if they want to pursue with this Test championship, best of three final would be ideal. A three-match series as a culmination of two and a half years of cricket," Shastri said in the pre-departure press conference. <o:p></o:p>

"But they need to finish off the Future Tours Program (FTP) and then start all over again. So one-off is one-off, guys have earned their stripes, and this is not a team that is suddenly blossomed overnight." <o:p></o:p>

India have already completed a 14-day quarantine in India before flying to the UK whereas New Zealand are getting match practice with the two-match series against England before the WTC final.

Former India captain and one of the legends of the game, Sunil Gavaskar has named one batsman he would love to play like in modern cricket. The introduction of T20 cricket and its evolution has changed the way modern-day batters think about the game while finding unique shots to score runs. <o:p></o:p>

Gavaskar opined that he gets excited whenever he watches a T20 match as it brings quick results into the play while adding he jumps out of his chair whenever someone plays an unorthodox shot. <o:p></o:p>

“I know a lot of who played around my time, they’re not happy with the T20 format, but I actually love it. I love it for a simple reason that you know it’s a 3-hour game, and you get a result, and you get to see so much of action,” said Gavaskar on The Analyst Inside podcast.<o:p></o:p>

“When somebody plays the switch hit and the reverse sweep, I’m out of my chair because I think those are fabulous and incredible shots, and it takes a lot of skill to be able to hit them for sixes,” explained the 71-year-old.

Gavaskar named former South Africa captain AB de Villiers as a batsman he would have loved to bat like and replicate the shots. The former Indian skipper lauded a few technicalities in de Villiers’ batting as he said he loves watching him bat.<o:p></o:p>

“AB de Villiers, bat like him, you know 360 degrees, play everything. I mean, just make it look as if you’re having a net. He makes it look so simple. He hits a fair distance, and he is very elegant as well. When he hits some of those shots, I love how his bat’s follow-through goes right over the shoulder. It’s not one of those punches; it’s like a proper shot. I love watching him bat,” Gavaskar added further.<o:p></o:p>

Steve&nbsp;Smith's stupendous average of 67.46 in the longest format of the game is second just to the exceptional Sir Don Bradman, a definitive batting godlikeness.

All the more along these lines, unusual and versatile as he will be, he has demonstrated his virtuoso in his home conditions as well as in violent turning or seaming conditions overseas against the best of the sides.

His craving for runs is ravenous, his want achievement is unquenchable, and his capacity to vanquish difficulties is unmatched. All eyes will be on young batter Shafali Verma when India take the field in their tour of England where the Women in Blue are set to play one-off Test, three ODIs and as many T20Is. As India gear up to depart to the UK, the Indian women team’s head coach Ramesh Powar sounded optimistic of Shafali’s prospects in English conditions.<o:p></o:p>

Powar was central to India men’s batsman Prithvi Shaw’s turnaround as the youngster roared back to form in Vijay Hazare Trophy for Mumbai following a disappointing tour of Australia, where he was dropped from the playing XI due to poor run of form.

Shaw went hammer and tonk in the domestic circuit and regained his form and confidence to take the first half of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 by storm. He scored more than 800 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021 and then lit up the IPL 2021, scoring 308 runs in eight matches.&nbsp;

Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has weighed on his opinion about all-rounder Vijay Shankar, who has struggled with injuries since playing for India in the ICC World Cup 2019. New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor is hoping that the experience of playing alongside Stuart Broad in County cricket will help him during the two-match Test series against England. Broad has dismissed Taylor 16 times – the most by any bowler against the veteran right-hander.<o:p></o:p>

With Broad being named as the vice-captain for the two Tests against the Black Caps, the veteran is now expected to be a part of both matches despite England’s strict rotation policy. Broad is almost a surety to find a place in the playing XI for the series opener starting at Lord’s on Wednesday. <o:p></o:p>

Both Broad and Taylor had shared the dressing room for Nottinghamshire in County cricket. <o:p></o:p>

"I had the fortune to play with him at Notts and saw the way he went about things, I heard him talking to bowlers and I asked him a few questions," Taylor told reporters ahead of what is set to be his 106th Test.

At the point when you discuss somebody having lived in the shadow of the other individual all through his profession, individuals will in general by and large consider Rahul Dravid, who notwithstanding performing so well for India with the bat had consistently been appraised close to the virtuoso of Sachin Tendulkar.&nbsp;

In any case, things were not the equivalent with a man from Tamil Nadu who made his introduction for the Indian group late in 2004 as a wicket manager batsman, just to clear the spot in the next year for M.S.Dhoni.&nbsp;

Dinesh Karthik was first chosen for the Indian group nine years prior, as a wicket-keeper. He is a gifted right-handed batsman. He is a player who can moor the innings and raise the stakes when required. In spite of the fact that he made his debut in 2004, he has played 94 ODIs till now.&nbsp;

In the limited opportunities he has had for India; Dinesh Karthik averages 25.0 in 42 Test innings, 30.21 in 79 ODI innings, and 33.25 in 26 T20 internationals.

Nonetheless, there are a few moments in his vocation which has endured in the minds of the Indian cricket fans. Here is one glance at such recollection:

There was silence all throughput as Manish Pandey holed out too long-on. Clearly, this was the game, that's what most of the Indian fans thought that night. The following batsman took his bat: smash, a six-over long-on. Boom, a four over long-on, and another six over square leg.

18 March 2018, Colombo, Nidahas Trophy final against Bangladesh characterised Dinesh Karthik's vocation. A kid who came to global cricket as wonder was in a circumstance where his team required him to accomplish something which would make an effect for the years to come. Team India required 34 runs off the last 12 balls.

He made his way to 16 off three balls while at the other end his partner Vijay Shankar had crawled his way to a painstaking 12 off 15. He smashed the last ball for four and ended the over with 22 off 6.

Vijay Shankar scored just one run off the first two balls in the last over. Another single at the moment meant nine runs were required from the last three balls. He slices it past the third man; it's a four. Five from 2 now, the match is almost evenly poised.

Next ball, a wicket: India's expectations have broken. Five needed off one, presently the core of each Indian fan is pounding; the pressing factor is on the man in the middle. And, six! The batsman roars the ball into the stands, and the group goes wild. &nbsp;

Keeping his body head still, Dinesh Karthik pounded an endeavored wide-yorker from Soumya Sarkar over the covers for a greatest, sending the group and the Indian changing area into incongruity. This innings, 29 off eight, would wind up characterizing Dinesh Karthik's profession.

Considering the context of the game and the pressure he was under, Dinesh Karthik delivered a memorable knock. A knock that will be remembered by every Indian Cricket Team fan.

Dinesh Karthik's career has been brimming with good and bad times yet the will to continue is something that makes him a standout. At whatever point you want to surrender, think about Dinesh Karthik.

Wishing you a very Happy Birthday Dinesh Karthik. May you continue to win matches for your team.&nbsp;

In any case, things were not the equivalent with a man from Tamil Nadu who made his introduction for the Indian group late in 2004 as a wicket manager batsman, just to clear the spot in the next year for M.S.Dhoni. Dinesh Karthik was first chosen for the Indian group nine years prior, as a wicket-keeper. He is a gifted right-handed batsman. He is a player who can moor the innings and raise the stakes when required. In spite of the fact that he made his debut in 2004, he has played 94 ODIs till now. In the limited opportunities he has had for India; Dinesh Karthik averages 25.0 in 42 Test innings, 30.21 in 79 ODI innings, and 33.25 in 26 T20 internationals. The following batsman took his bat: smash, a six-over long-on. Boom, a four over long-on, and another six over square leg. 18 March 2018, Colombo, Nidahas Trophy final against Bangladesh characterised Dinesh Karthik's vocation. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will request an extension of one month to decide on the hosting of the ICC T20 World Cup in India amid the COVID-19 threat as the ICC Board holds a virtual meeting on Tuesday to discuss the host of other issues, including the Future Tour Programmes (FTP) for the next cycle of 2023-31. <o:p></o:p>

While earlier it was reported that the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly will attend the meeting in person, the former Indian captain will now join the meet virtually as he is set to depart for the UAE on Wednesday to have discussions on the remainder of IPL 2021 with Emirates Cricket Board.<o:p></o:p>

According to PTI, no concrete outcomes are expected from the ICC Board meeting with the BCCI set to hold another Special General Meeting (SGM) after July 1. The ICC is expected to make a final announcement on its decision during its annual conference, scheduled for July 18.<o:p></o:p>

While the remainder of IPL 2021 has been moved to the UAE in the September 15-October 15 window, the BCCI will leave no stones unturned to host the global T20 tournament, which has UAE as backup hosts.

--&nbsp;Perhaps the most memorable default in major history came only eight months ago when world number one Djokovic was disqualified after accidentally striking a female line judge with a ball in frustration.

The Serbian star's last-16 match against Pablo Carreno Busta lasted less than one set, as Djokovic hit the ball away in disgust after being broken to fall 6-5 behind, with it hitting the line judge in the throat.

Djokovic pleaded his case to the umpire and tournament referee Soeren Friemel, but after 10 minutes of discussion it was announced that the top seed's US Open was over.

He went then directly to his car and left the Flushing Meadows site in New York without speaking to reporters.

"I'm extremely sorry to have caused her such stress. So unintended. So wrong," Djokovic later said in an apology posted on social media.

<h2>Jeff Tarango: 1995 Wimbledon</h2>

--&nbsp;Tarango argued repeatedly with chair umpire Bruno Rebeuh during a third round match against Alexander Mronz and the American refused to continue to play, effectively defaulting himself.

Rebeuh gave him code violation for telling spectators to "shut up", claiming it was an audible obscenity.

Tarango accused Rebeuh of being "one of the most corrupt officials in the game" so Rebeuh gave the American another code violation.

Tarango packed up his racquets and stormed off the court. Tarango's wife then slapped Rebeuh twice in the face.

<h2>John McEnroe: 1990 Australian Open</h2>

--&nbsp;One of McEnroe's most notorious tantrums. Facing Sweden's Mikael Pernfors, he was warned for intimidating a lineswoman, docked a point for smashing a racquet and shouted at a fan whose baby was crying.

He then abused tournament supervisor Ken Farrar. Umpire Gerry Armstrong immediately disqualified the American who admitted later: "I can't say I'm surprised. It was bound to happen."

McEnroe also said he had misunderstood the rules, not realising they had changed to a three-strike process for a default rather than the previous four-strike system.

<h2>Not a modern phenomenon</h2>

-- However, getting kicked out of Grand Slam events isn't new.

The last player to be defaulted before McEnroe was Spaniard Willie Alvarez at the French Championships in 1963.

American Earl Cochell was defaulted from the US Championships in 1951 and banned for life from the sport for arguing with officials. He was allowed to return in 1962 but his best days were long behind him.

Naomi Osaka has been threatened with disqualification from the ongoing French Open by Grand Slam organisers if she continues her media boycott at Roland Garros. She was fined $15,000 for skipping her post-match press conference on Sunday and could face heftier punishments if she does not back down.

Tennis: Be careful Naomi! Three infamous Grand Slam defaults

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has named his X-factor for Team India in the impending tour of the UK, where the Virat Kohli-led outfit will play the World Test Championship final versus New Zealand and five Tests against England. Chopra further agreed with Rahul Dravid’s assessment that India are well capable of defeating the Joe Root-led outfit on their home soil.<o:p></o:p>

Former Indian skipper, Dravid had earlier predicted a 3-2 scoreline in favour of the visitors, and Chopra while weighing his opinion echoed the same sentiments as he said that this is a great opportunity for the Indian team to get a much-awaited Test series win on English soil.<o:p></o:p>

“I definitely agree, who will not agree with Rahul bhai. There is weight in what he has said, whenever India goes out these days, it is their best chance. To be fair, the chances had become less in Australia because of so many injuries but we won there as well. If you can win there with half a team, hardly eleven players who could be fielded, then to defeat England in England, I think this is a great opportunity,” said Chopra on his YouTube channel.

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has said that the current crop of fast bowlers of the country has not only forced teams to take notice but also pushed them to twice before preparing green tracks to host the Indian cricket team. Shami, who is one of the senior members of India’s bowling department, is gearing up for a gruelling tour of the UK where India will play the final of ICC World Test Championship and five Test matches against England.<o:p></o:p>

India’s fast bowling contingent includes the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Shami, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Siraj along with Shardul Thakur. <o:p></o:p>

"The best thing about our bowling unit is that we have 4-5 pacers who can constantly bowl at over 140-145 clicks. You can find 1-2, but to find 4-5 is tough, and we have that. We force the opposition to think what wickets they want to offer us. I don't think we've had bowlers who could bowl at this pace earlier, we never had 4-5 of them coming in units. Earlier, teams used to plan easily against us but today they are forced to think otherwise," Shami told India News.

Young pacers like Prasidh Krishna and Arzan Nagwasawalla, who are in the Indian contingent for the UK tour, would want to pick the brains of the senior pacers such as Bumrah, Shami and Ishant. <o:p></o:p>

"As seniors, our duty is to tell the youngsters to ask us things freely. Overall, the atmosphere and camaraderie between the juniors and seniors is amazing. It's important to make your country, captain and the board proud," Shami added.

Mumbai Indians team-mates Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult would be up against each other in the final of ICC World Test Championship, which will be played between India and New Zealand in Southampton from June 18. Former England captain Michael Vaughan has weighed his opinion on who is the better bowler between Boult and Bumrah as the cricketing world gears up for the biggest spectacle in Test cricket.<o:p></o:p>

Opining on the matter, Vaughan picked Boult while citing longevity but said that picking between the two players is a very close task.<o:p></o:p>

When asked who is the better bowler between Boult and Bumrah, Vaughan played it safe as he said: “Bumrah or Boult… I can’t decide. I’m going to sit on the fence probably for the first time in my life. I would say Boult because he’s been doing it for longer, but Bumrah is incredible and a brilliantly skilled bowler, bowled so well in England a couple of years ago. So I think it’s very, very close,” Vaughan told Spark Sport.

Ace Australian pacer Pat Cummins is unlikely to return for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, which will take place in the UAE, to play for Kolkata Knight Riders. <o:p></o:p>

According to a report in Sydney Morning Herald, Cummins has made it clear that he won’t be participating in the remaining matches of IPL 2021 for his team KKR. <o:p></o:p>

"David Warner and Pat Cummins could be rested from the West Indies tour because of family reasons - others could follow after a draining year in several bubbles - and Cummins, despite a multimillion-dollar IPL contract, has already said he will not return to the T20 tournament this season," stated the report.<o:p></o:p>

Earlier, the managing director of the England men’s team and former international, Ashley Giles said that England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) are not planning to tweak their schedule for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.

Tamim Iqbal said that his team needs to chip away at specific areas subsequent to losing their third ODI against Sri Lanka. The hosts, notwithstanding, secured the series 2-1, having won the initial two matches.

Bangladesh sneaked through the third and last match of the series, losing by 97 runs at the Shere Bangla Stadium in Dhaka on May 28.&nbsp;
In the post-match presentation, he said:

"As I said at the end of the last game, we have won the series but I never felt that we played the complete game,"&nbsp;- he said.&nbsp;

"Never played to our potential. Lucky that we are on the winning side but there are many areas that we need to seriously work on. They had a very attacking mindset today, and we helped them by bowling a lot of short balls, lots of widths. When the opportunity came, we didn't take our catches. If we had taken those, could have been maybe 30 runs lesser"&nbsp;- he added.&nbsp;

Batting first, Sri Lanka posted a solid 287 runs. Kushal Perera, who called for more intent after the second ODI, drove the group from the front with a splendid century.&nbsp;

Dhananjaya de Silva likewise made an important commitment of 55 runs to help post a difficult complete that demonstrated too enormous for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh got off to a forlorn beginning in their pursuit yet Mahmudullah and Mosaddek Hossain steadied the boat with singular fifties. Dusmantha Chameera was remarkable with the ball, getting back with a five-wicket take to crash the home side with the last four players neglecting to cross single digits.&nbsp;

Having lost by 97 runs, Tamim Iqbal encouraged the adolescents in the group to venture up and unite behind senior cricketers in impending games.&nbsp;

"Overdependency on seniors maybe it is a concern. But I'm someone who always stands with the youngsters because I don't think they aren't trying. Just that if they start scoring, it will be better for the team" - he said.

Mushfiqur Rahim, who was named the player of the series, hit two game-dominating thumps in the initial two matches. He completed the series with 237 runs from three games including a century and a fifty.

"The boys worked really hard for the series. Last few months we haven't played our best cricket but we executed our plans well in the first two games of this series. If you play international cricket for 15 years, you need to contribute more and more" - he said

"Sri Lanka isn't an easy side to score against, they like to come hard against us, they never give up. I enjoy the responsibility, whenever there is pressure on me, I like to stay calm. It gives me the urge to do well" - he added.

The BCCI indefinitely postponed the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 owing to positive cases across multiple teams inside the bio-secure bubble. While all the players and staff participating in IPL 2021 have now returned back to their respective homes, Ravichandran Ashwin was one Indian player who pulled out of IPL 2021 mid-way. <o:p></o:p>

Ashwin, who plays for IPL 2021 runners-up Delhi Capitals, decided to withdraw from the T20 tournament to be with his family. While Ashwin didn’t reveal the reason for his exit initially, his wife disclosed that as many as 10 people at their home had tested positive for COVID-19.<o:p></o:p>

Now, the veteran spinner has opened up about the phase during IPL 2021 as he said that while almost everyone contracted the dreaded virus in his home, a few of his family members’ health deteriorated and were admitted to the hospital.<o:p></o:p>

As things developed, Ashwin failed to be at peach inside IPL’s bio-secure bubble and the 34-year-old said that he couldn’t sleep due to the tension and stress for eight to 10 days.

Ashwin further revealed that he doubted whether he would be able to return to cricket.<o:p></o:p>

“Since I couldn’t sleep, it was really stressful for me. I was playing matches without getting any sleep. And since I found it really taxing, I had to quit IPL and go home midway. In fact, when I left, around that time, I had thoughts on whether I will be able to play cricket thereafter. But still, I did what was required at that point of time,” Ashwin stated.

Ashwin, who plays for IPL 2021 runners-up Delhi Capitals, decided to withdraw from the T20 tournament to be with his family. While Ashwin didn’t reveal the reason for his exit initially, his wife disclosed that as many as 10 people at their home had tested positive for COVID-19. Now, the veteran spinner has opened up about the phase during IPL 2021 as he said that while almost everyone contracted the dreaded virus in his home, a few of his family members’ health deteriorated and were admitted to the hospital. As things developed, Ashwin failed to be at peach inside IPL’s bio-secure bubble and the 34-year-old said that he couldn’t sleep due to the tension and stress for eight to 10 days. ‘Had thoughts on whether I will be able to play cricket thereafter’ – R Ashwin on pulling out from IPL 2021

The Managing Director of England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Ashley Giles as said that the priority of English players would be to represent the country while adding no changes would be made to the international schedule in a bid to accommodate the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.<o:p></o:p>

Giles maintained his earlier stance that ECB has not received any official requests to shift the five-Test series against India, which would allow more time for the BCCI in the September-October window to conduct the remainder of IPL 2021 in the UAE. <o:p></o:p>

‘I’m not aware of anything official, any requests to shift anything. As far as we’re concerned and what we’re prepared for, the matches will be where they are. I’m not surprised there’s all sorts of speculation. Everyone wants to get their cricket in. But we’ve not received anything official and we’re cracking on,” Giles said. <o:p></o:p>

Giles further said that even if some players are rested for the limited-overs tours of Bangladesh and Pakistan in September-October, that would not mean they can go and participate in IPL 2021.

Earlier, ECB allowed its players to play in IPL 2021 in April-May despite a Test series scheduled against New Zealand in early June as the two-Test rubber wasn’t a part of the ICC World Test Championship. Cricket: Gayle, Shakib and Du Plessis return to Caribbean Premier League

England pacer Jofra Archer has successfully undergone elbow surgery and will now not rush to make his comeback with an eye on the ICC T20 World Cup and the Ashes later in the year. England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Wednesday confirmed that Archer had undergone surgery and will start an “intensive rehabilitation” period with the ECB and Sussex medical teams.<o:p></o:p>

Archer has said he is open to returning for the upcoming five-Test series against India but is prepared to sit out the summer to help England achieve their goals in the T20 World Cup and Ashes. &nbsp;<o:p></o:p>

"One thing I am determined about the post-elbow operation is not to rush my comeback because my primary focus is to be playing for England in the Twenty20 World Cup and Ashes later this year. Those are my targets. If I come back before then and manage to play in the home Test series against India -- then fine, so be it. If I don't, I am quite prepared to sit out the summer," Archer wrote in his column for Daily Mail, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

"The way I am looking at things is that I would rather miss a few weeks of a year so that I have a few more years in my career. I just want to get this injury sorted once and for all and that's why I'm not looking that far ahead or at dates for a return to action. Because if I don't get this right, I won't play any cricket. Period. I am not going to do myself any good by coming back before I'm fully fit, so I will take my time and do what is best for me and my life," he added.<o:p></o:p>

Archer, who had made a comeback for Sussex in the County Championship against Kent, managed only five overs and pulled out after suffering from pain in his right elbow – the same injury that has been bugging the pacer for long.

"Surgery was always the last option and we wanted to exercise every possible strategy before we went down that route. It was the last thing on the list. It is not always a fix and in four weeks we will find out how things have gone. Former World Cup-winning skipper Kapil Dev has weighed his opinion on swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, who has been hailed as one of the most talented batters in today’s cricket. <o:p></o:p>

While Pant took the world by storm as he roared back to form in the Test series against Australia and England, Kapil Dev reckons that the southpaw needs to slow down a bit and find a perfect blend of caution and aggression as India gear up to take on New Zealand in the World Test Championship final before locking horns with England in a five-Test series. <o:p></o:p>

“He looks a very mature cricketer now from the time he came into the side. He seems to have far more time to play his shots and obviously his range of strokes is awesome. But England will be challenging. He must spend more time in the middle and not just look to hit every ball. We used to say the same about Rohit Sharma, who had so many shots, but would step out and get out so many times,” Kapil Dev was quoted as saying by Mid Day.

Cricket: Kapil Dev comes up with valuable advise for Rishabh Pant ahead of England tour

New Zealand batsman Henry Nicholls has said that the Black Caps need to be prepared for the Indian spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja despite the Indian team boasting a lethal pace attack. New Zealand will take on India in the final of the ICC World Test Championship in Southampton from June 18. &nbsp;<o:p></o:p>

India’s pace attack consists of Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami whereas the likes of Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav and Shardul Thakur are also in contention for the playing XI spot. For New Zealand, the pace troika of Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Neil Wagner are likely to take up the red cherry in Southampton. <o:p></o:p>

“India have a very good seam attack and also have experienced spinners like Ashwin and Jadeja. They have been consistent in all parts of the world (of late) and bring quality (to attack),” Nicholls, who has been in good form of late in Test cricket, told PTI in an interview.

Nicholls further said taking on India will be an exciting challenge and the New Zealand cricket team, as a group, is expecting a tough fight from the world’s number one Test unit.<o:p></o:p>

“Mohammed Shami along with Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma have proven their quality over the years which is similar to our seamers (Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Neil Wagner) on whom we really pride ourselves on.
