Former India opener Sunil Gavaskar thinks that youngster Prithvi Shaw is going to struggle unless he learns to play on back foot. Gavaskar's comments come after Shaw, who has been sidelined from competitive cricket due to injury for six months, recently scored a century in Ranji Trophy (India's premier domestic tournament) for Mumbai.

"Time for him to step up but what has happened is that a lot of teams have found that because of his predominant movement onto the front foot and that high backlift, they go the short way with him. So unless he starts to learn to play off the back foot, he is going to struggle. If the pitches are such where the ball doesn't come up, then it will be fantastic for him," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson scored a record second hundred on day 3 (Feb 6) in the ongoing first Test against South Africa in Mount Maunganui. Williamson scored 109 in addition to his 118 in the first innings and became only the fifth Kiwi batter to achieve the feat. Thanks to Williamson's century, New Zealand piled on more misery on inexperienced South Africa by taking their total lead to 528 runs with six wickets remaining by the end of play on Tuesday.

Before Williamson, Glenn Turner (1974), Geoff Howarth (1978), Andrew Jones (1991) and Peter Fulton (2013) had achieved the same feat for the Blackcaps. All of these five batters, however, scored the twin hundreds in a home Test.

India beat England by 106 runs on day 4 (Feb 5) of the second Test in Vizag to equal the five-match series 1-1. Chasing 399, England were bowled out for 292 runs in their second innings after the hosts took five of the nine remaining wickets in the first session only.

England batter Zak Crawley has said that he's going to continue with his aggressive style of play as that has helped him with his consistency. The batter had scored a stroke-filled 76 off just 78 balls but Jasprit Bumrah's 6/45 derailed England's innings afterwards on day 2 (Feb 3) of second Test in Vizag. Crawley, however, remains firm on playing attacking cricket, a norm under skipper Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, as that's what got him where he is at the moment.

“I’m happy that I’m much more aggressive now and that’s helped with consistency. I wasn’t happy to get out when I did but I’d definitely do the same thing. If that one doesn’t turn and I hit him over his head for six then suddenly he’s under a lot of pressure and I can milk him for two hours or whatever. There’s risk and reward there," said the England batter after second day's play.

On being asked if he was disappointed about his dismissal or that is his style of play, Crawley said: "Definitely the second one. If I start doubting myself in those situations and not backing my instincts, then I revert back to the player I was a couple of years ago, not scoring many runs for my team."

“I’ve done it before and it came off, but it didn’t come off today. I was disappointed with myself, especially when the wickets fell after. But I’ll keep telling myself to back my aggressive game because that’s what got me here,” he added.

England were cruising along nicely at 114-1 before Crawley was dismissed by Axar Patel. The visitors kept losing wickets at regular interval after that as Bumrah conjured one of the best spells of his career, especially in India. India pacer's 6/45 ensured England fold out 143-run short of India's first innings total of 396.

The day ended with the hosts at 28/0 in the second innings as their total lead grew to 171.

Mizoram batter Agni Chopra has become the first batsman to score four centuries in first four games of Ranji Trophy (India's premier first class tournament) Plate Group.

Mizoram batter Agni Chopra has become the first batsman to score four centuries in first four games of Ranji Trophy (India's premier first class tournament) Plate Group. He's the son of famous Indian movie-maker Vidhu Vinod Chopra and has shifted base from Mumbai to Mizoram for the ongoing season. He has managed to score 105, 101, 114, 10, 164, 15, 166 and 92 in his first eight innings at a sensational average of 95 and a strike rate of 111.80. The batter also thanked deceased NBA star Kobe Bryant for inspiring him. "4 years ago today we lost the greatest Los Angeles Laker of all time, Kobe Bean Bryant. 4 years later today, I scored my 4th hundred in my first 4 consecutive Ranji trophy games and raised up number 24. Thank you for inspiring me Mamba. You live on in us," wrote Chopra in an Instagram post.
Opening India batter Prithvi Shaw has been declared fit to take part in the upcoming Ranji Trophy (India's premier domestic tournament) games. Shaw had suffered an injury during his stint with English county Northamptonshire and hasn't played competitive cricket since last six months. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), however, has said that the batter is now fit enough to take part in the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai.

“He has been declared fit and can take part in the Ranji Trophy games. The BCCI has informed the MCA (Mumbai Cricket Association) about it,” confirmed a BCCI official, as reported by the news outlet The Indian Express. His first assignment could be as soon as on Friday (Feb 2) when Mumbai take on Bengal in Kolkata.

Shaw is trying to make a comeback to the Indian cricket team since making his debut in 2018. The Mumbai batter has played five Tests, six ODIs and one T20I so far.
With T20 World Cup just months away, Shaw would be hoping to get some runs under his belt in Ranji Trophy before heading to IPL 2024 where he had a horrible last season. If Shaw manages to make an impact at IPL 2024 for Delhi Capitals, he'll surely be in contention to be in the T20 WC squad which is scheduled to be played in June, jointly held in the USA and West Indies.

Australia batter Matthew Short is ready to take up the opportunity in the upcoming white-ball series against West Indies, especially in T20I given that the ICC T20 World Cup is scheduled to be played in June later this year. He plays for Adelaide Strikers in BBL and the team made it to the challengers match this season before bowing out.

"I've got this opportunity and if I take it with both hands and do really well then I don't see a reason why I can't be looked at in the future in a full-strength squad," he said while talking to the reporters on Wednesday (Jan 31) at Australia Cricket's award ceremony.
