The Ranji Trophy (India's domestic tournament) match between Bihar and Mumbai grabbed the attention for many reasons including the condition of the Moin-ul-Haque stadium in Patna where the game is being played. The venue, which once hosted the World Cup fixtures in 1996, is currently in such a dilapidated condition that warning posters have been put for fans to enter at their own risk. The four-day match started January 5 and also kicked off domestic season in Indian cricket.

"Yes, the condition is bad but there is a plan to make this stadium world class, and the tender for it has also been passed," said the Bihar Cricket Association's (BCA) head Rakesh Tiwary as reported by ESPNCricinfo.

"It will be revamped very soon, [but] because the match was still to be played, we have somehow made it playable. We have full hope that soon this stadium will start shining like its old history," he further added in defence.

The reason why BCA couldn't take care of the stadium was because it falls under the jurisdiction of the city municipal corporation and not the state cricket association, reported ESPNCricinfo further.

Once a World Cup venue, Bihar’s crumbling Moin-ul-Haque stadium hosts Ranji Trophy match

Pakistan team director Mohammad Hafeez has distanced himself from skipper Shan Masood's decision to not bowl Aamer Jamal early in fourth innings of third Test against Australia. Chasing 130, Australia were 97/1 when Jamal was introduced into the attack in Sydney on Day 4 of the Test on January 6. The decision to keep Jamal waiting raised eyebrows as the bowler had already taken a six-wicket haul during Australia's first innings in the match.

"It's up to the captain," Hafeez said after the game. "All bowlers were available but it's the captain's tactic. We wanted to bowl more from the off-spinner because this track can offer a lot from the far end but the rest is up to [Masood]. Tactically, I think Jamal should have bowled earlier, but inside the field, the captain is the best judge so you have to back that up."

Pakistan eventually lost the Test by eight wickets as Australia swept the series 3-0. Jamal, however, turned up as one of the brightest spots for Masood-led team with both bat and ball.

The 27-year-old, who made his debut in the series, scored 143 runs with the bat including a valiant 82 in the last Test which took Pakistan past 300 in the first innings. He had also scored a handy 33 in the first innings of the second Test. Overall, Jamal was the third highest run scorer for Pakistan on the tour behind Mohammad Rizwan (193) and Shan Masood (181) - a testimony to the horrendous tour for the visiting batters.

In his main suit, bowling, Jamal took 18 wickets in six innings across three matches - the second most from either side and behind only Australia skipper Pat Cummins' 19 wickets. Jamal also took two six-fers in the series - 6/111 in opening Test in Perth and 6/69 in Sydney.

Among Pakistan bowlers, Jamal was clearly the standout with Shaheen Shah Afridi being the distant second with 8 wickets in 2 Tests he played.

The match saw two teams turn up from Bihar to play - one each from two warring factions of Bihar Cricket Association (BCA).

There was, however, only one 'official' team which took the field against Mumbai in Patna's Moin-ul-Haque stadium. Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, who decided to withdraw from the upcoming Test series against South Africa, is having mental fatigue. Kishan was not included in the two-Test squad and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cited his personal reasons for the exclusion. A report in the media outlet Indian Express, however, says that Kishan decided to take a break due to mental fatigue.

“He informed the team management that he is having mental fatigue and wants a break from cricket for some time. Everyone agreed to it,” said the media outlet, citing a source.

The team management has named KS Bharat as his backup for the series in South Africa which starts on Boxing Day (Dec. 26). Most Recently, the India batter played in the first three ODIs of the five-match series against Australia which took place right after the conclusion of ODI World Cup in November.

India's victory margin was the largest by runs in women's Test cricket and also their first Test win against England at home.

Deepti Sharma stars in India's record win over England women in only Test

Veteran opener David Warner hammered a gritty 164 to silence the critics and steer Australia to 346-5 against an inconsistent Pakistan attack in the first Test at Perth on Thursday.

The 37-year-old batted for much of day one before finally departing to Aamer Jamal, two balls after smashing the debutant for six.

At stumps, Mitchell Marsh was unbeaten on 15 and Alex Carey not out 14.

Pakistan have never won a Test series in Australia and have failed to win a Test in the country since 1995, with Shan Masood's side again facing a daunting task.

Their bowlers showed flashes of brilliance and were rewarded with the wickets of Usman Khawaja (41), Marnus Labuschagne (16), Steve Smith (31) and Travis Head (40).

But until Jamal struck, they had no answer to a near-flawless Warner who smashed 16 fours and four sixes in a majestic 211-ball innings.

He padded up under pressure to score runs with an emotional goodbye from Test cricket at the third Test in Sydney in front of his hometown fans his stated goal.

In the lead-up, former Australian paceman Mitchell Johnson questioned whether Warner deserved a hero's farewell given his recent poor red-ball form and involvement in the 2018 ball-tampering scandal.

With his back against the wall in his 110th Test, Warner responded in typically swashbuckling fashion.

"People make comments, but you get one with it. You have to just go out there and score runs and today I did that," said Warner. "I don't feel any extra pressure, any other points I have to prove.

"If people are out to get you or make a headline out of your name, so be it. I can't worry about that, I've got to worry about what I do for the team."

After Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bat, Warner took a confident single off his first ball in an opening over from Shaheen Shah Afridi that leaked 14 runs and never looked back.

On a pitch offering bounce, he quickly settled in to bring up his half-century off just 41 balls with a boundary from Faheem Ashraf.

His strike rate slowed after lunch as he moved towards a 26th Test ton, reaching three figures with an uppercut boundary off Jamal, celebrating with his trademark leap and putting his finger to his mouth.

"It was a nice, little quiet shush," Warner said of his celebration, referring to the criticism.

It was his first century since a battling 200 against South Africa at the Melbourne Cricket Ground a year ago.

- Solidarity -

He was dropped by Khurram Shahzad soon after bringing up his milestone but was otherwise in command until Jamal tempted him with a short ball and he was caught near the ropes by Imam-ul-Haq.

Khawaja, wearing a black armband in solidarity with the people of Gaza, was happy to play second fiddle in a 126-run opening stand.

He had a massive let-off on 25 when dropped but departed when Pakistan's bowlers picked up their game after lunch, caught by wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Ahmed off Afridi's bowling.

Labuschagne looked in good nick, racing to 16 when he was beaten by a ball pitched up by Ashraf and given out lbw.

Smith clattered a four through midwicket off his second ball to signal his intent but, after effortlessly making 31, he was deceived by a delivery from Shahzad and got a faint edge to the diving Ahmed.

It was a maiden Test wicket for the debutant.

Head cashed in with a quick 40 before top-edging straight to Agha Salman, ensuring Jamal too earned a first Test wicket.

"I still believe we are in the game," said Jamal. "We are planning to get them out in the first hour tomorrow morning."

India's stand-in T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav is not perturbed by the five-wicket defeat in the second T20I against South Africa on Tuesday (Dec. 12). Yadav, fondly called SKY, is satisfied with the 'brand of cricket' played by India and said that the mood in the dressing room is full of cheer.

The skipper, however, acknowledged that the Proteas batted brilliantly in the powerplay while chasing and that helped them win despite India putting up a par score.

Speaking after the loss to the broadcasters in Gqeberha, SKY said (not verbatim): "I think it was a par score, but they batted beautifully in the first five-six overs. That's the brand of cricket we were talking about. The message was loud and clear. It was a little tough [to bowl], but I told my boys were out of our comfort zone. The mood in the camp is always happy, and full of cheer, because I've said whatever happens on the ground, leave it on the ground. Really looking forward to the third T20I."

After the first T20I was washed out without even the toss, South Africa won the coin flip on Tuesday and elected to field first. India had a horrible start after being asked to bat as they lost both openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (0) and Shubman Gill (0) for just six runs in the first two overs.

Skipper Surya then added 49 runs for the third wicket with Tilak Varma before the latter got out on a personal score of 29. Rinku Singh came in and added 70 runs for the fourth wicket before SKY got out after scoring 36-ball 56. Rinku (68 not out off 39) continued to hold end as India reached 180/7 in 19.3 overs before the rain stopped play and eventually ended India's innings.

Chasing a revised total of 152 in 15 overs, SA opener Rezza Hendricks led the charge with a 27-ball 49. Other batters also kept contributing as the hosts reached the target in 13.5 overs with five wickets left to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

The third and final T20I for the series will be played on December 14 in Johannesburg.

Veteran all-rounder Andre Russell made a dazzling return to international cricket to help West Indies cruise to a four-wicket victory over England in the opening Twenty20 international in Barbados on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old Russell was the pick of the West Indies bowlers with three wickets for 19 runs off four overs as world champions England were all out for 171.

Russell, alongside skipper Rovman Powell, who was unbeaten on 31, then produced a quick-fire 29 not out to see West Indies home after a mid-innings wobble threatened to allow England back into the contest.

Russell's innings off just 14 balls included two fours and two sixes, including a monstrous six out of the ground over midwicket off Adil Rashid.

West Indies blasted 14 sixes throughout the innings, including two huge swipes from opener Kyle Mayers early on which also flew out of the ground.

Russell later slashed a sublime shot over backward point off Sam Curran for four runs to seal victory and a superb individual performance.

"Life is so funny," man-of-the-match Russell said.

"Since when I got selected for the West Indies team I've been dreaming for two weeks now -- and I was dreaming of being man of the match."

England skipper Jos Buttler was left to rue the tourists' inability to cash in on a strong start to their innings which included a 77-run opening partnership.

"From the position we were in, we were looking for a score of 200," said Buttler, who scored 39 while fellow opener Phil Salt put on a stylish 40 off 20 balls.

"We want to keep pushing the boundaries and trying to be as positive as we can.

"But it's about finding ways to keep scoring in that manner, getting those extra 20, 25 runs in an unfashionable way."

The second game of the series takes place in Grenada on Thursday.

Brief scores:

England: 171 all out in 19.3 overs (P. Salt 40, J. Buttler 39, L. Livingstone 27; A. Russell 3-19, A. Joseph 3-54)

West Indies 172-6: (K. Mayers 35, S. Hope 36, R. Powell 31 not out, A. Russell 29 not out; R. Ahmed 3-39, A. Rashid 2-25)

Result: West Indies win by four wickets

Series: West Indies lead five-match series 1-0

England fast bowler Jofra Archer recently caught the England Cricket Board (ECB) with a surprise by featuring for his school team in Barbados without informing the management. The pacer, who has been dealing with injuries for quite some time now, is believed to have returned to the United Kingdom as of now.

The news was first reported by ESPNCricinfo, which is how England team managing director Rob Key came to know of Archer's adventure.

"I'm not aware of that," Key said, when informed about Archer's involvement with his school team. "I'll find out," Key added while announcing the England Test squad for the India tour for which Archer has not been considered.

Notably, Archer has been handed a central contract by the ECB despite playing just seven white-ball matches since March 2021. The contract, apart from a show of faith, is also to take over Archer's recovery program in order to bring him back.

"Now we're taking control of him coming back. We're not going to say you need to get back for this part here. From what they've said, an elbow injury is a complicated place to have an injury. So we just want to take this as slow as possible," said Key.

The 28-year-old was expected to be a part of the recently concluded ODI World Cup but failed to recover in time. He had played a pivotal role in England's triumphant campaign in the 2019 edition and now is expected to return for the defence of the T20 title in the ICC T20 World Cup in June next year.

Considering his ability to win matches and the injury, Archer has been withdrawn from the IPL 2023 auction as well. Key, while talking about Archer's importance for England, said: "If it takes an extra couple of months, but he gets another couple of years out of his career, and gets back fully... I think he's worth his weight in gold."

In a fresh blow, former Indian pacer S Sreesanth has been issued a legal notice by the Legends League Cricket (LLC) commissioner in the 'fixer' row. On Thursday (Dec 7), news broke that Gautam Gambhir called Sreesanth a 'fixer' during their heated altercation in the LLC Eliminator between the India Capitals and Gujarat Giants in Surat.

After their heated exchange, Sreesanth soon shared a video on Instagram where he dwelled on his fight with Gambhir on the field. The former Indian speedster then made some serious allegations where he mentioned Gambhir insulted him with some harsh usage of words. At first, he didn't reveal what exactly was told by Gambhir. Soon, the former Indian opener shared a cryptic post, in response to Sreesanth's claims, which provoked the pacer to reveal that he was called a 'fixer' by Gambhir. In addition, he claimed that the batter abused Sreesanth in the middle.

As Gambhir and Sreesanth's exchange has become the talk of the Indian cricket fraternity, the LLC commissioner has stepped in and issued a legal notice to the latter.

The notice claimed that Sreesanth was guilty of breaching his contract while playing in the T20 tournament. In addition, it stated that talks with the pacer will only commence once he removes the videos slamming Gambhir.

The umpires who tried to play mediators also sent their report on the controversy. However, there was no mention of Sreesanth’s claims of being called a ‘fixer’ by Gambhir. Later on Thursday evening, Sreesanth replied to Gambhir's post and continued to slam him, calling him an 'arrogant' and 'utterly classless individual'.

Amid all this, his wife Vidihita also joined in to slam Gambhir. She shared a post on Instagram and wrote, "It is so shocking to hear from Sree that a player who has played for India with him for many years can stoop to this level. Even after so many years of retirement from active cricket. After all, upbringing matters a lot and it shows up when this kind of behaviour comes up on ground. Shocking truly shocking."

Sreesanth vs Gambhir spat: Former India pacer issued legal notice by LLC commissioner over 'fixer' row

Former India teammates Gautam Gambhir and S Sreesanth got involved in a heated exchange during the Legends League Cricket (LLC) 2023 Eliminator between India Capitals and Gujarat Giants at the Lalabhai Contractor Stadium, Surat on Wednesday (Dec 6). The incident took place during the second over of the match when Gambhir smacked the pacer for a six and a four. After the next ball was hit to the fielder for no run, tempers flared between the duo.

After the match, Sreesanth shared a video that went viral on social media where he dwelled into the whole face-off and levied some serious allegations against Gambhir. It is to be noted that Sreesanth did not reveal the exact details of the 'rude' things Gambhir said, however, he has promised to reveal them soon. The former Indian speedster maintained that Gambhir's actions were uncalled for and without any provocation from his end.

Sreesanth said in a video posted on his Instagram handle, "Just wanted to clear the air with what happened with Mr. Fighter. One who always fights with all his colleagues. For no reason whatsoever. He does not even respect his senior players, including Viru bhai. That's exactly what happened today. Without any provocation, he just kept on calling me something which was very rude which shouldn't have been said by Mr. Gautam Gambhir."

It will be interesting to see how Gambhir responds to Sreesanth's allegations. He has had a history of being involved in several on-field fights with Shane Watson, Virat Kohli, etc. whereas often many have felt he has been insecure of MS Dhoni, his former India captain.

Talking about the LLC Eliminator, India Capitals rode on captain Gambhir's 51 (30), Kevin Pietersen's 26 (15), Ricardo Powell's 28 (22), Ben Dunk's 30 (10) and Bharath Chipli's 35 (16) to post a mammoth 223/7 in 20 overs. In reply, the Parthiv Patel-led Giants managed 211 for 7 -- despite Chris Gayle's 84 (55) and Kevin O'Brien's 57 (33) -- to lose by 12 runs and bow out of the competition.

Gautam Gambhir." Without any provocation, he just kept on calling me something which was very rude which shouldn't have been said by Mr. Gautam Gambhir." He further mentioned, "I am not at all at fault here. I just wanted to clear the air straightaway. What Mr. Gauti has done, sooner or later all of you will get to know. The words which he used and the things he said on a cricket field, live, is not acceptable. My family, my state, everybody has gone through so much. I fought that battle with all your support. Now people want to down me for no reason. He said things he shouldn’t have said. I will surely let you know what he said." " Sreesanth added, "Just want to say I am very hurt and my family is hurt and my dear ones are hurt. And the way he said things… I haven't used a single bad word or a single abuse. He just kept on saying words which he always does." Former Australia cricketer Mitchell Johnson says a personal text by David Warner earlier this year played a part in him writing a recent article where he criticised the Australian batter. Johnson, in his article for West Australian, questioned Warner getting a hero's send-off in Test cricket despite being in bad form. Notably, Warner has been selected for the first Test against Pakistan which starts on December 14.

"I got a message from Dave, which was quite personal," Johnson said while speaking on his podcast The Mitchell Johnson Cricket Show on Tuesday (Dec. 5). "I tried to ring to try and talk to him about it, which I've always been open to. I know I've been open to the guys when I finished playing. I said if I'm in the media and writing things or saying things that you don't like, just come and speak to me.

Johnson revealed that the text from Warner came after he had written an article where he had questioned Warner's form and the batter's wife - Candice Warner - defending her husband's place in the Test squad on a Fox Sports television show.

Johnson's recent article created a furore in Australian cricket with several former and current cricketers sharing their views. Australia batter Usman Khawaja, who is Warner's opening partner in Test cricket, defended his fellow batter.

'Can't keep going...': Alastair Cook lashes out at England after 1st ODI loss vs West Indies

India bowler Arshdeep Singh held his nerve in the final over during the fifth T20I against Australia and gave away just three runs to help his team win. Australia needed 10 runs on Sunday (Dec 3) in Bengaluru but Arshdeep's last over was clinical enough to hand India a 4-1 series win.

The bowler, however, didn't have the best of the days before that final over as he had given 37 runs in three overs before that. Arshdeep too acknowledged that and said that he believed in himself and so did the staff.

"I guess for the big part of the game, for almost the first 19 overs, I was thinking that I gave away too many runs and would be the culprit of the game," Arshdeep said after the game on the official broadcast. "But god gave me another chance and I believed in myself. Thanks to god that I defended it and thanks to the staff as well who believed in me."

Arshdeep started with a bouncer first up which should have been a wide but umpires thought otherwise. He then bowled full-length balls and even scalped the wicket of Aussie skipper Matthew Wade to ensure a win.

Sharing his thought process for the final over, he said: "To be honest, nothing was going through my mind. Surya [Suryakumar Yadav] bhai told me that whatever happens, happens. The credit goes to our batsmen as well. They gave us a really good total here on a tricky wicket and we had a cushion of an extra 15 to 20 runs."

It wasn't a typical Chinnaswammy pitch where high scores are a norm during the Indian Premier League. The pitch was slow as India managed 160/8 in their 20 overs - thanks to Shreyas Iyer's 37-ball 53.

Australia had the chase on track with 37 needed off 24 balls and five wickets in hand. Mukesh Kumar's double-wicket five-run 17th over, however, changed the course of the game. Australia eventually could manage only 154/8 in 20 overs with Mukesh Kumar taking 3/32 in his four overs.

Afghanistan's remarkable win over Pakistan will lead to ripple effect in Afghan Cricket: Jonathan Trott

The BBC said Saturday it has agreed a financial settlement with England cricket legend Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff after he was seriously hurt while filming for its popular show "Top Gear". The British broadcaster's commercial arm BBC Studios did not specify the settlement figure with the former England captain over the crash, but it reportedly totals £9 million ($11 million).

The 45-year-old celebrated former all-rounder was hospitalised and has endured a slow recovery since the driving accident while filming for the hit motoring programme last December.

"BBC Studios has reached an agreement with Freddie that we believe supports his continued rehabilitation, return to work and future plans," a BBC Studios spokesperson said in a statement.

"We have sincerely apologised to Freddie and will continue to support him with his recovery."

BBC Studios is a commercial company which does not use income generated from the publicly-funded licence fee used by other arms of the UK broadcaster.

In September, Flintoff appeared in public for the first time since the accident, still sporting facial injuries, after he was coaxed into joining England's backroom staff in an unpaid capacity.

He played 79 Tests and 148 one-day internationals for England before retiring from cricket aged 32.

He has gone on to have a successful career in television, including co-presenting "Top Gear".

During his cricket career, Flintoff played a pivotal role in England winning the Ashes in 2005 and 2009.

The BBC said Saturday it has agreed a financial settlement with England cricket legend Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff after he was seriously hurt while filming for its popular show "Top Gear".

WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. New Zealand skipper Tom Latham on Saturday said hosts India have been playing "fantastic cricket" and the Kiwis will need to adapt quickly to win the battle of World Cup table-toppers. Both teams come into the contest unbeaten in their four matches and now meet in the Himalayan hill town of Dharamsala to get ahead of each other in the race to the semi-finals.

New Zealand have an edge over India in World Cup match-ups with a 5-3 advantage and had knocked out the much-fancied team in the semi-finals of the last edition in 2019.

"I'm not sure to be honest," Latham, who is leading the side in the absence of the injured Kane Williamson, said on his team's good record against India at the 50-over showpiece.

"They're a fantastic team. They've been playing some great cricket for a long period of time. We've had some great contests in ICC events, but also in bilateral series, whether that be home or away."

New Zealand reached the final of the last two World Cups but lost to Australia in 2015 and then England four years ago. "Being adaptable is probably one of the most important things for us as a group and trying to do that as quick as possible," Latham told reporters.

"Obviously with this format you play everyone once which is unique to 2015 where it was pool play." Latham, a wicketkeeper-batsman, added: "So yeah, again we're in India, we're offered different conditions that we're used to. So, adaptability, sticking to our plan as best you can."

- 'Good luck All Blacks' -

New Zealand's previous two matches have been in hot and humid Chennai but the action now shifts to the winter capital of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.

New Zealand have bowling depth and their seamers including Trent Boult, Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson shared six wickets in the last win over Afghanistan.

"I think there's many factors that lead into a game. I don't think it's one specific area that you can nail down," said Latham.

"But as you said, India's top order have been fantastic this tournament. And again, our bowling attack has done a really good job up front as well. So that's going to be a great contest with bat and ball and obviously vice versa with Indian seamers in our top order."

Latham confirmed speedster Tim Southee will be available for the key match. On Williamson, who is nursing a fractured thumb, Latham said, "fingers crossed he'll be available for later on in the tournament".

Left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner, who plays for Indian Premier League side Chennai Super Kings, leads the bowling chart in the tournament so far with 11 wickets and Latham said the team will "lean" on his experience.Latham also wished the All Blacks good luck for the Rugby World Cup final in Paris next week after he stayed up late to watch their semi-final win over Argentina.

"Yeah, obviously I definitely stayed up for the All Blacks and watched them," said Latham."It was a great contest, obviously Kiwis support each other wherever that may be around the world and we're certainly no different in supporting the All Blacks and obviously we've had so much support back home for us here and this World Cup as well."

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has offered an extension to men's head coach Rahul Dravid. The tenure of the extension remains open-ended as of now. Dravid's term came to an end after the recently-concluded ODI World Cup 2023 where India finished the runners-up.

The development, which was reported by ESPNCricinfo, also suggests that there's no confirmation on whether Dravid has accepted the extension or not. One of the reasons for which the extension has been offered is to ensure the continuity of the structure put in place by Dravid over the last two years. Dravid joined as the coach after India's exit in the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Under Dravid's coaching, India reached the semi-final of the T20 World Cup last year apart from going on an unbeaten run of 10 wins in the ODI World Cup before the loss in the final against Australia. India also reached their second consecutive World Test Championship (WTC) final where they lost to Australia in June earlier this year. They currently are the number one side across formats.

Talking about his potential extension during the ODI World Cup, he had said: "I haven't thought about it. I have no time to think about this, and no time to reflect on this. I will when I get the time to do that. But at this point of time, I was completely focused on this campaign. It was focused on this World Cup, and there was nothing else on my mind. And I haven't given any other thought to what happens in the future."

If he accepts the offer, Dravid's first assignment will be India's tour of South Africa. The tour starts with six white-ball games - three T20Is and three ODIs each - from December 10 before two Tests in Centurion (from December 26) and Cape Town (from January 3).

The next series after South Africa will be England's tour of India for a five-Test series.
