Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will be bracing for SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) batting juggernaut when they face each other in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on April 15. The match will be played at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru where boundaries are on the shorter side.

SRH have been on fire with the bat this season in the five games they have played. SRH have crossed 200 twice in those matches, including hitting 277 against MI - the highest team total in the league's history. Hyderabad have three wins in five matches and currently sit fourth on the points table with six points. In the three wins, SRH batted first twice and chased once, while in the matches they lost, they defended once and chased once.

SRH batting order is strong throughout with Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma at the top, Heinrich Klaasen and Aiden Markram in the middle order, and Abdul Samad along with skipper Pat Cummins lower down the order. Their bowling has also been largely good with Cummins leading a pace attack which comprises Natarajan and Bhvuneshwar Kumar, with Umran Malik in reserve.

As for RCB, they have been going through a horrible season with five losses in six games. They currently are at the bottom of the table with just two points to their name. Bengaluru's Virat Kohli, however, is having a sensational run with the bat, having already scored 319 runs so far.

Apart from Kohli, RCB's batting has looked lacklustre, especially with the out-of-form Glenn Maxwell. However, skipper Faf du Plessis and Rajat Patidar have scored runs in the last match, hinting at their return to form. With Dinesh Karthik going strong in the lower order, RCB would be hoping for a turnaround.

Their bowling is also something that has let RCB down more often than not. With Mohammed Siraj having a below par season and no spinner able to pose a threat, Bengaluru would bank on their batters to do the bulk of lifting during the match against SRH.

The biggest rivalry in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is back with Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), both five-time champions, taking on each other on April 14. Both the teams have had contrasting seasons so far with MI losing first three games before winning two on the trot and CSK sitting pretty on third place after five games.

The match will be played at Mumbai's home ground, that is, Wankhede, and MI would be hoping to continue their winning run. Hardik Pandya-led Indians have won their last two games at home only and look solid again, thanks to their batting order.

CSK, on the other hand, have lost both their games away from home and will look to change the stat on Sunday. CSK are dealing with some injury troubles as well with pacer Matheesha Pathirana not confirmed to play.

For Mumbai, their batting looks strong once again, especially after Suryakumar Yadav's return to form with a 19-ball 52 in the last match when MI chased 197 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Up the order, Ishan Kishan also looks in sublime touch with Rohit Sharma playing cameos.

The bowling remains a concern for Mumbai too with only Jasprit Bumrah being the standout performer, having taken 10 wickets in five games. Rest of the Mumbai bowlers have gone for aplenty and Hardik would like to get a grip on that before Bumrah encounters a bad day.

Similarly, CSK would like Deepak Chahar to start having more impact in the powerplay. In batting department, Chennai have done decent but would definitely prefer skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad to stay longer and convert his starts, especially slow ones, into big scores.

Both the team have faced each other 36 times in the league with MI emerging winner 20 times and CSK winning it 16 times.

Amid the ongoing captaincy saga in Pakistan, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday (Apr 9) announced the 17-member squad for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand.

The entire series will be played in Rawalpindi and Lahore between April 18 and 27, a few weeks before the T20 World Cup kicks off in the USA and West Indies.

Fast bowler Mohammad Amir and left-arm spinner Imad Wasim have been recalled to the squad after ending their disagreements with the board. Amir last represented Pakistan in international cricket in 2020 before opting to retire and focus on T20 leagues while Wasim announced his retirement in November 2023.

Apart from the two, PCB have also included uncapped middle-order batter Muhammad Irfan Khan and opener Usman Khan in the squad, saying they both earned the nod from selectors following their impressive performances in the recently concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL)

“We hold great optimism and belief in their potential to become key impact players, yet recognise that this requires ongoing dedication and effort," said selection committee member and batting coach Mohammad Yusuf.

"I trust that both players will continue their upward trajectory, sparing no effort in proving themselves worthy of the selectors' and captain's trust and confidence," he added.

Pakistan's captaincy woes

The T20I series against New Zealand will be the first time that Babar Azam takes the field with the captain's armband after being removed from the post, following the disastrous World Cup campaign in India. Babar's captaincy attracted widespread criticism as he failed to galvanise his troops to put up strong performances.

However, a little more than four months later, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed Babar was replacing Shaheen Afridi as the T20I captain.

The decision was set in motion after Pakistan lost the T20I series 1-4 to New Zealand away and fast-tracked following Afridi's poor handling of his PSL team which won only one out of the 10 matches.

The decision though, may not have gone down well with Afridi who recently posted an Instagram story seemingly taking a swipe at the PCB and other high-ranking officials who sabotaged his captaincy tenure.

Apart from the two, PCB have also included uncapped middle-order batter Muhammad Irfan Khan and opener Usman Khan in the squad, saying they both earned the nod from selectors following their impressive performances in the recently concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL) “We hold great optimism and belief in their potential to become key impact players, yet recognise that this requires ongoing dedication and effort," said selection committee member and batting coach Mohammad Yusuf. "I trust that both players will continue their upward trajectory, sparing no effort in proving themselves worthy of the selectors' and captain's trust and confidence," he added. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be looking to snap their losing streak against the mighty Kolkata Knight Riders (KRR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on April 8. CSK will have the home advantage but they'd need more than that to stop the KKR juggernaut. Knight Riders, notably, are the only unbeaten team in the tournament apart from Rajasthan Royals (RR).

Chennai, on the other hand, have lost two back-to-back games after winning their first two. They won their opening game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by six wickets before beating Gujarat Titans (GT) by 63 runs. In the next two matches, CSK were beaten by Delhi Capitals (DC) and SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH).

KKR, however, have been on a roll with three consecutive wins. After narrowly defeating SRH in their first match of the season by four runs, they were dominant in their next two games. KKR beat RCB by seven wickets for their second win before inflicting a huge 106-run defeat on DC.

The reason for KKR's success has been their opening partnership with all-rounder Sunil Narine acing his pinch-hitter role as one of the openers. After scoring just two runs in his first match, Narine went on to score 47 off 22 and 85 off 39 in the next two games to give KKR a flyer of a start. With Andre Russell also in form lower down the order, KKR's batting order is the envy of the league.

For CSK, their newly-appointed skipper and opener Ruturaj Gaikwad's form is a cause of concern. Gaikwad has gotten the starts, albeit slow ones, but hasn't been able to stay long to make up for them. Apart from Shivam Dube, no middle-order batter has been able to leave an impact.

CSK would need to fire all cylinders if they hope to win against KKR.

After RCB's innings, RR, from their official X account, posted: "184 sounds good on a day when 200+ was possible," alongside an image of Yuzvendra Chahal who returned the figures of 2/34 in four overs.

Kohli, who scored 113 not out off 73 balls, his record-extending albeit joint-slowest century, spoke at length about his team's performance during the mid-innings break and said: " Our target initially was 190, 195, to be honest. But then assessing the pitch and how it was slowing down, we decided if one of Faf [du Plessis] or me get out, then the other had to bat till the end so that we can get that boost closer to 180-185, which we did, which I feel is a very effective total on this pitch."

Australia batter Steve Smith has admitted that it has been challenging for him as a Test opener so far. Smith took the role after David Warner called time in whites for Australia in January earlier this year. Smith, who has nearly 10,000 Test runs, was then promoted up the order to open the batting.

"It's been challenging so far. We've played with some tricky wickets, particularly new-ball wickets that have done quite a bit. It has been challenging. I'd love to sort of turn it around and score some runs up there, that's for sure," Smith told news agency PTI in an interaction.

The Aussie has batted in four matches as an opener and has been able to score just 191 runs in eight innings at an average of 28.50 with a highest score of 91 not out. Smith, however, said that he isn't thinking much about it.

"I'm not reading too much into it. You know, I feel like I've still been batting well," he said while acknowledging that he needs to fix a few technical things.

"A few things I'd like to fix up a little bit technically, but I've had that going throughout my whole career, and it doesn't really matter where I'm at in that respect. We'll wait and see," he added.

Smith also said that the wickets he has opened on have been a bit tricky as well with opposition batters also failing to score runs on them.

"Can't sort of underplay how difficult the wickets have been. A lot of the top orders that we've played against haven't scored a great deal of runs, and it hasn't been until the 30-40 overs-mark that we've seen the wickets get a little bit better and the lower order score some runs,” he added.

Overall, Smith has played 109 matches for Australia with 9,685 runs to his name after starting his career at number nine. He is now considered Australia's one of the best batters ever with an average of 56 in Tests alongside 32 tons and 41 fifties.

Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull has criticised MS Dhoni for his 16-ball 37-run innings against Delhi Capitals over the last weekend. The cricketer-tuned-commentator pointed towards Dhoni's denial of singles in the penultimate over which contributed to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) facing their first loss of the season.

With the game almost out of reach, Dhoni took the onus on himself to hit the big ones and refused to take singles, keeping Ravindra Jadeja as a spectator on the other end.

"I know there was a lot of hoopla about Dhoni's innings but he blocked a lot of balls. He faced a lot of dots and then when he started to not take runs, I could not believe what I was watching. I know he is the great MS Dhoni but it was a poor call. It was a really poor call not to take those runs," said Doull.

The five-time champions were chasing a difficult target of 192 and had been trudging at a lowly run rate of 7.5 when Dhoni arrived at the crease in the 17th over. At that stage, CSK required another 72 runs in 23 balls and Dhoni started off by hitting couple of boundaries in his first three deliveries. However, he refused singles in the 19th over which only yielded five runs.

"You are still trying to win the game and I know it is his first bat in a long time, first bat of the season and he is probably thinking at some stage of maybe getting to find some form but I didn't agree with it. I didn't agree with what happened in that situation. To me, it was a really poor look. I was watching it and thinking you know, it didn't look good for me. That just didn't look quite right to me when he wasn't taking runs," he added.

Dhoni should come up

While the Kiwi criticised Dhoni for his innings, other former players were full of praise of the veteran, with many suggesting that he come up the order to provide impetus to CSK's innings.

Australian pacer Brett Lee was the first one to make the case for Dhoni to be pushed up the order by the CSK management.

"He was on tonight, he was not rusty. I do want more from him in terms of batting. Get yourself up the order. He is outstanding, his brain is still nice and sharp, CSK please get MS Dhoni up the order," the former Aussie fast bowler said.

Mohammed Kaif echoed a similar sentiment and said Dhoni did not look like a player who had not played cricket in the last year or so.

"The way he batted today, this No.8 isn't his spot. He should be playing at No.4 or No.5. Come in and playing a few deliveries but Dhoni is batting way too low at No.8. The form that we saw today, that spot is too low and you would like to see him come early and help CSK win matches," said Kaif.

WATCH | CSK batter MS Dhoni's power hitting in death overs against DC thrills crowd Dhoni should come up While the Kiwi criticised Dhoni for his innings, other former players were full of praise of the veteran, with many suggesting that he come up the order to provide impetus to CSK's innings. Also read | IPL 2024: Former Indian, Australian players urge CSK to promote MS Dhoni up the order after Vizag blitz Mohammed Kaif echoed a similar sentiment and said Dhoni did not look like a player who had not played cricket in the last year or so.

'Couldn't believe what I was watching': Simon Doull criticises MS Dhoni for his knock against DC

Over the years, IPL has been a huge success and many franchises have become extremely popular worldwide. Here is a list featuring teams with most matches in the cash-rich league.

Teams with most matches in IPL

Delhi Capitals (DC) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) don’t have your usual sporting rivalry. Instead, it can be described as sort of an awkward relationship.

KKR’s biggest legend, Gautam Gambhir, left the franchise in 2018, categorically telling the owners that he didn’t want to be retained. He then joined DC (who were called Delhi Daredevils at the time) and suggested it was always a part of his plans to come back to his home franchise and lead them.

When that didn’t go well and DC’s fortunes dipped further, the franchise changed skippers mid-way through the season and gave the reins to Shreyas Iyer. The middle-order batter showed some silver linings by changing a few matches on his own, one of which involved him smashing a 93* (40) against, well, KKR.

Also Read:

But, ironically, all didn't go well for him either. He was injured for the first half of IPL 2021 and DC made Rishabh Pant the captain. When Shreyas returned for the second half after the COVID-19 break, DC did the most awkward thing by sticking with the new captain instead of going back to the guy who led them in their toughest time.

Now, in IPL 2024, both Gambhir and Shreyas are in the KKR camp as mentor and captain respectively. For them, it would be like going back to a chapter of their lives that they would have wanted to forget like a bad dream.

But KKR haven’t been innocent in this regard either and they have faced the consequences of it too. Kuldeep Yadav, their best gift to India alongside Suryakumar Yadav, was forced to the bench for weeks after a few bad games and ultimately released in 2022. He joined DC and in the three matches against KKR since then, he has 10 wickets at an average of 6.40 - his best record against any team in the IPL.

As a result, DC have won all three of their last matches against KKR. Most of their current players too, including Prithvi Shaw and David Warner, have excellent records against the two-time champions, who have looked weirdly deflated in these contests.

Now, when the two teams meet in Vizag, DC’s adopted home for the first few games of IPL 2024, the Gambhir and Shreyas partnership will want to tackle that awkwardness. And they’ll feel confident about that because of their set-up too.

KKR are one of the two unbeaten teams in the tournament and thanks to Andre Russell’s form, the emergence of Harshit Rana and Phil Salt, and an overall ability to adapt in the team (which they showed by becoming the first team to win an away game in IPL 2024) make them look like early challengers for the title.

DC are different. Despite the win versus CSK, they look like a team designed to succeed only on tracks with a lot of help for pacers. And despite Rishabh Pant’s success in the previous match, their middle order doesn’t encourage confidence.

It’s an awkward skill battle with a ton of emotions in play — the perfect advertisement for the IPL.

CSK's Shivam Dube scored 51 off 23 balls in IPL 2024 on March 26 against Gujarat Titans as his team posted 206/6 in 20 overs. Over the years, there have been many innings played by CSK players at high strike rates. Here are a few of those innings played by CSK players scoring minimum 50 runs at high strike rates.

Cricket Australia (CA) has reiterated its desire to hold a bilateral series between India and Pakistan if the countries agree. CA chief executive Nick Hockley made the comments after releasing the summer schedule for Australia during which they host India and Pakistan in separate series. While Pakistan will be in Australia for a T20I and ODI series of three-match each, India will be starting their five-Test tour four days after the Pakistan series on November 22.

"We're so excited to host Pakistan. We're so excited to host India. If we can help, that's great. But I think in many ways, that's a bilateral series. It's really for others to make that happen," said Hockley.

This is not the first time CA has expressed the desire to serve as a neutral venue to host India and Pakistan in a bilateral series. It first made such a statement after the blockbuster 2022 T20 World Cup match between the Asian countries at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Over 90,000 people attended that match which saw India win in a thrilling manner.

"I think anyone that was here for the India-Pakistan game at the MCG, it will go down as one of the most memorable occasions, not just sporting occasions, that I've ever been to," Hockley said. "So people want to see that contest. We would love to host that if the opportunity arose. If we can play a role, we'd love to play a role."

CA's head of scheduling, Peter Roach also shared the same views but acknowledged that there's no room for such a series as of now.

"We haven't got a tri-series in the FTP," Roach said. "Going forward we're always interested in opportunities for matches and contests that will engage our fans. It's fair to say every country in the world would love to see India and Pakistan compete in their country."

Notably, India and Pakistan haven't played a bilateral series since 2012-13 due to political tensions between the two countries and currently see each other only in the ICC tournaments.

Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has been given the green light to participate in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for his franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), albeit with a caveat. The doctors declared Iyer fit but warned not to lunge too much while playing the forward defence as it could aggravate his recurring back injury. Iyer had missed out the last two days of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy final, citing back issues. Afterwards, reports started swirling around that Iyer might skip the initial phase of IPL. “He is fit to play, a specialist spine doctor was consulted in Mumbai who has advised him not to stretch his leg too forward while defending the ball. He has joined IPL franchise KKR and he can play,” a source in the Indian cricket board was quoted as saying by The Indian Express. Iyer, who scored an impressive 95 in the second innings against Vidarbha, had to be attended twice for back pain, later undergoing scans for the same, raising questions on his availability for KKR’s opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23. The right-handed batter underwent back surgery last year that kept him out of action for nearly six months, during which he missed last year’s IPL and the World Test Championship final against Australia in June, which India lost. Iyer returned to action ahead of the Asia Cup in August before featuring at number four in the home World Cup later in the year. His exploits helped India reach the finals, but he failed to inspire the home team to go past the mighty Aussies as they won the all-important clash by six wickets to lift the trophy for a record sixth time. IPL 2024 to start The latest edition of the IPL will begin on March 22 with defending champions Chennai Super Kings squaring up against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. KKR are two-time champions and would hope that Iyer plays the entire tournament for the franchise to have a better chance of reaching the knockouts. Prior to KKR, Iyer was a pivotal part of Delhi Capitals and led them to their first playoffs in 2019 after seven seasons. (With inputs from agencies)

Mumbai became record-extending 42-time Ranji Trophy champions on Thursday (Mar 14) as Dhawal Kulkarni castled Umesh Yadav in his final first-class match to have the perfect fairytale sendoff. Despite the 169-run margin of the victory, Mumbai had to dig deep in the last two days as Vidharbha threatened to do the impossible.

Mumbai's latest Ranji Trophy triumph comes after a long, eight-year hiatus when they last won against Saurashtra. Meanwhile, Vidharbna suffered an agonising loss, having won their last two Ranji finals.

Chasing a humongous target of 538, both Vidarbha openers Atharva Taide and Dhruv Shorey got starts but could not capitalise on it. Karun Nair played a measured knock in the middle order, scoring 74 runs and eating away a lot of time from the match.

Mumbai were dominant for the major parts of the game but might have felt anxious as Harsh Dubey and Akshay Wadkar batted beautifully on the Day-4 morning to add certain jeopardy to the game.

Wadkar smashed his second hundred in a Ranji final and showed his class yet again, albeit in a losing cause. Just when it looked like Mumbai were going through the motions, Tanush Kotian put his hands up and delivered the crucial breakthrough, catching Wadkar plumb in front of the sticks.

The dismissal of Vidarbha's captain opened the floodgates and Mumbai quickly wrapped up the innings with the last five wickets falling in the space of 15 runs.

Vidarbha could have made the contest closer if the batters had not floundered in the first innings. Having skittled a strong Mumbai batting lineup for 224, Vidarbha lost the plot with the bat and could only conjure 105 runs in response.

With the advantage firmly on the side, Mumbai pressed on the throttle and piled up 418 runs in the second innings, courtesy of a daddy hundred from Musheer Khan (136) and useful contributions from Shreyas Iyer (95), Ajinkya Rahane (73) and Shams Mulani (50).

Speaking about the title win, skipper Ajinkya Rahane said: "Last year, we didn't qualify by 1 run, that really hurt us. We knew we had the talent and individuals, but what is important was creating the right culture and attitude."

"We enjoy the win because this has been a long, hard season. Whenever we get back in June, we'll plan for the future. Want to credit the Mumbai support staff for their efforts in the backend throughout the season."

We knew we had the talent and individuals, but what is important was creating the right culture and attitude." "We enjoy the win because this has been a long, hard season. Whenever we get back in June, we'll plan for the future. Want to credit the Mumbai support staff for their efforts in the backend throughout the season."

BCCI secretary Jay Shah has revealed that star batter Rishabh Pant could play in the T20 World Cup, scheduled later this year if he can don the wicketkeeping gloves once again.

Pant is set to make his much-awaited comeback in the Indian Premier League (IPL) later this month, after being involved in a horrific car crash in December 2022.

"He is batting well, he is keeping well. We will declare him fit very soon," Shah told news agency PTI.

"If he can play the T20 World Cup for us, that will be a big thing for us. He is a big asset for us. If he can keep, he can play the World Cup. Let's see how he does in the IPL."

The car crash had caused significant physical damage to Pant who was forced to step back from the game. According to reports, the Indian dasher suffered a severe right knee injury that required ligament reconstruction surgery. He also had a fractured wrist and ankle that took significant physiotherapy to heal.

Ponting updates on Pant's comeback

While Shah hinted at Pant's comeback to the national team, his franchise Delhi Capital's head coach Ricky Ponting provided encouraging signs about Pant's participation in the marquee tournament.

“It's a big decision we'll have to make because if he is fit, you'd think he'd step straight back into that captaincy role,” Ponting said.

“If he's not entirely fit and we have to use him in a slightly different role, then we've got some decisions to make there,” he added.

Ponting updated that Pant has played some practice games and has shown improved fitness throughout the games.

“He's actually played some practice matches over the last couple of weeks, which has been really encouraging for us. I know he's worked incredibly hard on his body and his fitness to get back to the level that he's at now. He's kept in one of those games, he's fielded in these games and the batting hasn't seemingly been an issue for him so far," said Ponting.

Prior to the accident, Pant had become a mainstay for the Indian team in nearly all three formats while holding the Delhi franchise together with his scintillating performances.

Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto thinks that Sri Lanka should move on from the time-out incident in ODI World Cup 2023. Shanto's comments came after culmination of three-T20I series which Sri Lanka won 2-1 on Saturday (Mar 9). Sri Lanka players notably pointed at their watches after lifting the trophy in a reference to the ODI WC incident.

"It is not about aggressive handling or anything like that. They showed the timed-out gesture, right? They haven't moved on from the timed-out incident," said Shanto about the celebrations and heated arguments between the game after Bangladesh batter Towhid Hridoy's dismissal.

"I think they should get out of it. They should stay in the present. We were within the rules [with the timed out dismissal]. They are in a frenzy about it. I am not too worried about it," Shanto added.

Sri Lanka's Kusal Mendis, who top scored in the match with 86, was also asked the question about the same and said: "Someone was doing the timed-out celebrations. I don't know why. We can celebrate our own things. I think we celebrated because we are happy."

The rivalry between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh has been getting quite intense in the recent times and the WC incident just added more fuel to the fire. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan had appealed against Angelo Mathews for coming late in the ground and Mathews was subsequently given out - becoming the first player in history to get timed out.

As for the series, Sri Lanka won the first and the last match of the series which saw a couple of heated moments between the players. In the second match, which Bangladesh had won, an umpiring error had caused a lot of furor. Sri Lanka, nonetheless, were clinical on Saturday to wrap up the series win.

Lot happened, lot of talk about the 100th Test. Overwhelmed, a lot of well-wishers have come forward. Win the Test and take wickets, what more can a bowler ask for? Tried different actions, speeds, releases through the series. You need that skillset in India. Pleased with how the ball came out today, even though I went for a few."
