The USA became the latest associate nation to beat Pakistan in the Cricket World Cup, this time in their home in Dallas, Texas.

Pakistan’s mighty fall at T20 World Cup

International Cricket Council (ICC) will not be moving any of the T20 World Cup matches out of New York, despite growing fears over substandard pitches and outfield. Instead, ICC is reported to analysing data from previously abandoned games to establish how it need to act, BBC has claimed.

Since the Nassau County Stadium was developed from scratch in the last few months, drop-in pitches that were prepared in Australia and later curated in Florida have been used for the two matches. The outfield has also been laid down artificially which means the ball cannot zip through the surface when the batter times it.

In the two matches so far, no team has been able to cross the three figure mark as stroke-making remains difficult. According to a BCC report, after India played their first match against Ireland, the team management privately voiced their unhappiness with the unpredictable bounce and two-paced nature of the strips.

Former Indian cricketer-turned-pundit, Irfan Pathan did not mince any words in criticising the pitch. Pathan said if such pitches were used in India, the stadiums would not be allotted another match.

"Look, we definitely want to promote cricket in America, but this pitch is not safe for players. If we had a pitch like this in India, a match would never be played there again for a very long time. This pitch is definitely not good. I mean, we are talking about the World Cup here, not even a bilateral series," Pathan stated on Star Sports.

Wasim Jaffer, another former Indian cricketer, took a jab at ICC by suggesting that the pitch seemed more suited for Test cricket than T20. "This is an excellent pitch in New York. Provided the idea was to get the American audience hooked on to Test cricket disguised as T20," Jaffer posted on X.

The concerns are legitimate as India square up against Pakistan in their next match at the same stadium. The uneven bounce could prove the undoing of a contest that has been billed as the biggest match of the tournament for months.

The ninth edition of the T20 World Cup is underway in the West Indies and the USA. Rohit Sharma-led India kick off their campaign on June 5 versus Ireland, in New York. Notably, there are as many as six players making their debut for India, from the 15-man squad, at the marquee tournament. Here is a look at the debutant players.

T20 World Cup: Debutants for Team India at T20 World Cup 2024

Ahead of Team India's T20 World Cup 2024 opener, on Wednesday (June 5), outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid lauded the national team for being consistent in major events despite their 11-year-long ICC title drought. India have not won an ICC trophy since 2013 Champions Trophy but have remained one of the most consistent sides, making it to the knockouts at regular intervals. Dravid stated that India isn't thinking about their trophy jinx and are focused on getting into the knockouts of the ongoing T20 WC in West Indies and USA.

Speaking to the press, two days before India's match versus Ireland in New York on Wednesday, Dravid said, "To be very honest with you, I think we've actually played really well in these World Cup tournaments. In terms of our consistency, we've been very consistent. Obviously making the semi-final in Australia (2022). The World Test Championship is slightly different, it's not one tournament, but it's a whole cycle but playing extremely well in that cycle to get to the final there again."

He further opined, "And then we know the 50-over World Cup where we had a great run and went into the final. So, in terms of our consistency and quality of cricket that we have played in these big tournaments, we've been right up there with some of the best teams."

Dravid mentioned, "Yes, we probably haven't been able to get across the line in the knockout game. So, we just probably haven't been able to execute in that last phase. So, hopefully we play good cricket to get ourselves into those positions again and then maybe play good cricket on the day to cross the line.

"The important thing is when you start these tournaments is not to think about that, is to actually think about getting into those positions. You have to find yourselves in those positions where you are pushing for glory and that's all you can do as a group and as a team," the fomrer Indian captain added.

Under Dravid, who took over as coach in late 2021, India reached the semifinals of the 2022 T20 WC, played the 2023 WTC final and also reached the home ODI WC final later in the year. With him set to quit his job post the ongoing competition, Rohit Sharma-led India will be keen to give him a fitting farewell with a T20 WC win.

Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Ambati Rayudu has claimed that during his playing days, he, alongside Ravindra Jaedja, struggled with the notion that fans came to watch MS Dhoni first and the franchise later. Rayudu made the rather uncharacteristic comment ahead of CSK's final league match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) which could decide if the team advances to the playoffs or not. "Even when you hit a six and a four the crowd is silent, me and Jadeja felt that in the last few years. I really believe when I say this, that CSK fans are MS Dhoni fans first, and CSK fans later. Even Jadeja gets frustrated, but he cannot do anything," Rayudu said on Star Sports. Dhoni is an undisputed crowd favourite in India. Even when CSK are playing away from home, the majority of the crowd dons a CSK jersey with Dhoni on the backside. In what has possibly been his final few years on the IPL circuit, fans have come out in even greater numbers to cheer the former Indian captain. While Jadeja may have been frustrated with the conduct of the fans towards other CSK players, Dhoni appears to be on cordial terms with all. The former CSK captain was seen hugging Jadeja passionately after the final against Gujarat Titans last year where the all-rounder smashed 10 runs on the last two deliveries to seal another IPL trophy for the franchise. Also read | IPL 2024: CSK coach says MS Dhoni’s knock ‘psychologically’ affected MI Dhoni on his future Quizzed about his retirement after CSK won the final, Dhoni said he wanted to come back for the fans one more time. “Circumstantially if you see, this is the best time to announce my retirement. But the amount of love and affection I have been shown wherever I have been this year, the easy thing would be for me to say ‘Thank you very much’, but the tough thing for me is to work hard for another nine months and come back and play at least one more season of IPL,” Dhoni told commentator Harsha Bhogle. "A lot depends on the body, I have 6-7 months to decide. It will be more like a gift from my side, it's not easy for me but that's a gift. The way they've shown their love and affection, I think that's something I need to do for them," he added. Dhoni underwent a knee surgery and despite playing no professional cricket since then, has been one of the most dangerous death-over batters in the league. South Africa's premier T20 franchise tournament, SA20 is also looking to adopt the 'Impact Player' rule after its successful implementation in the Indian Premier League (IPL), according to a Cricbuzz report.

The introduction of the rule will be on the agenda when tournament organisers gather to plan the 2025 edition.

Notably, the South African organisers were set to introduce the rule in the 2024 edition which concluded in February with the Sunrisers Eastern Cape lifting their second consecutive trophy. However, it was put on hold as the auctions had happened and the franchises hadn't shaped their squads, keeping in mind the Impact Player rule.

What is the Impact Player rule?

IPL introduced the Impact Player rule in 2023, under which a team can name five substitutes at the toss. Once the match starts, depending on the game state, the captain is allowed to use any of the five substitutes and swap them directly with the player who was named in the original playing XI.

However, the introduction of the rule has divided the fans as well as the players. While the rule adds to the theatrics of the game, it has also taken away from the novelty of having proper all-rounders in the team.

Former Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma has called the ‘Impact Player rule’ as something that is taking away a lot from the game for just a little excitement.

“I generally feel that it is going to hold back [development of all-rounders] because eventually cricket is played by 11 players, not 12 players," Rohit said.

“I'm not a big fan of impact player (rule). You are taking out so much from the game just to make it a little entertainment for the people around," he added.

Also read | IPL 2024: 'Should be changed or...,' Delhi Capitals players hit out at Impact Player rule

Delhi Capitals (DC) player Axar Patel, who plays the role of bowling all-rounder, echoed the sentiment shared by Rohit.

"Because of the Impact sub rule, everyone gets one more batsman so they think that they will use the batsman in case the batting unit doesn't go well. And whosoever comes to play, they don't take much time and start (hitting) from the first ball because they know that they have a player in seventh or eighth place," Axar told PTI news agency.

"That is why I am not a big fan of the rule, because as an allrounder I know that they will either take a proper batsman or a bowler, not an allrounder," he added.

While teams failed to come to terms with the rule last year, they have become smarter and ruthless with the subs this year. It is perhaps one of the reasons why routine 200+ scores have been posted and chased this season.

Also read | IPL 2024: 'Should be changed or...,' Delhi Capitals players hit out at Impact Player rule Delhi Capitals (DC) player Axar Patel, who plays the role of bowling all-rounder, echoed the sentiment shared by Rohit. (With inputs from agencies)

Rajat Patidar then scored a blitzing 20-ball 50 and added 65 runs for the third wicket with Kohli. SRH then struck back with the wickets of Patidar and Kohli in space of 10 runs as RCB's innings again stuttered with five overs to go.

Cameron Green then stayed till the end and scored 20-ball 37 not out as Bengaluru posted 206/7 in 20 overs. For SRH, Jaydev Unadkat was the pick of the bowlers with 3/30 in four overs while Natarajan took 2/39 while skipper Pat Cummins and spinner Mayank Markande chipped with one each.

Former Zimbabwe all-rounder Guy Whittall survived a leopard attack earlier this week and is recovering after undergoing an emergency surgery. This is not the first time Whittall has had an encounter with the wildlife. Several years earlier, an eight-foot crocodile was found under his bed.

Whittall played 46 Tests and 147 ODIs for Zimbabwe between 1993 and 2003 and now runs a safari business with his family in the country. The incident occurred when he was tracking the said leopard who was injured by a client. Whittall suffered cuts to his arms and legs and a five-inch cut on his head as well.

He could have suffered more gruesome injuries had it not been for his pet dog Chikara. Whittall's wife confirmed the incident in a Facebook post with some special words for his dog.

"Chikara [is] coming up tomorrow to the vet after being mauled by the leopard and getting the cat off Guy!" she wrote. "Very special boy."

"Guy and I are overwhelmed by the hundreds of messages of well-wishers after Guy's run in with a wounded leopard earlier today. We are very fortunate that he was stabilized at Hippo Clinic by wonderful staff. He was then Airlifted from Buffalo Range by Ace Ambulance to Harare, then transferred to Milton Park Hospital for treatment," she added.

"He really is one lucky man," Hannah told MailOnline. "First he had the crocodile and now the leopard, he really is the cat with nine lives."

As for his numbers, Whittall had scored 2,203 runs in 47 Tests with a best of 203. He has also recorded 10 fifties and four hundreds in his career to go with 51 wickets with a best of 4/18 in an innings.

In ODIs, he scored 2,705 with 11 fifties to his name and a best of 83. In bowling department, he took 88 wickets with a best of 4/35 in an innings.

There have been teams who have often been all-out at regular intervals in IPL history. Here is a list depicting the top five sides who have lost all their ten wickets on most occasions in the tournament history.

India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad is expected to be out later this month. All the participating teams have to share their provisional squad by early May. Hence, a lot is being said and written about Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue's squad. Amid all this, former Indian captain and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief Sourav Ganguly made a bold claim. The Bengal Tiger feels Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should be the openers for the one-time winners at the mega event, which kicks off in West Indies and USA on June 1.

Speaking to PTI, Ganguly, who is currently serving as the director of cricket for the Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2024, said, "Both Rohit Sharma and Viral Kohli will definitely go to West Indies and USA. Its a call for selectors whom they will open with but if you ask me personally both Rohit and Virat should open for India in the T20 World Cup."

He further added, "Of course, Rohit should captain the team in the T20I World Cup. Virat Kohli also should be there. Virat Kohli is an outstanding player, nothing will happen (to return after 14 months)."

Both Rohit and Kohli returned to India's T20I setup after 14 months during the national side's home T20Is versus Afghanistan early this year. They had taken a long break from the format following India's 2022 T20 WC semifinal loss to eventual winners England, in Adelaide, Australia.

Kohli remains the highest run-getter in T20Is (4,037) and is also the leading run-scorer in T20 WC history, with 1,141 runs including 14 fifties. Meanwhile, Rohit is the fourth-highest run-getter in the tournament history, with 963 runs. Overall, he is second -- only behind Kohli -- in terms of most T20I runs (3,974). At present, both are busy in IPL 2024. Having been removed as the Mumbai Indians (MI) captain, Rohit is among the top run-getters in the ongoing edition, with 297 runs (fifth-most) including a best of 105*. Kohli, on the other hand, remains an integral part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and is the leading run-getter, with 379 runs along with a best of 113 not out.

If Kohli and Rohit open the innings for India in the T20 WC, one among Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill might not be selected. The provisional squad is expected to be out by May 1 (i.e. the cut-off date for all teams).

On Thursday (April 18), Raman Subba Row -- former England opener -- passed away at the age of 92. He was England's oldest living men's Test cricketer. The ex-Englishman was mainly known for his role as a cricket administrator, who brought advertisement and changed the game completely. Meanwhile, Subba Row's playing career comprised 13 Tests between 1958 and 1961, including three centuries at an average of 46.85.

Subba Row, son of a London-based Indian lawyer, retired from international cricket at the young age of 29. He, however, remained close to the game, serving as chairman of Surrey. His contributions also helped in establishing the Test and County Cricket Board (TCCB) - the forerunner of the England Cricket Board (ECB).

ECB chair Richard Thompson said, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo, "We are extremely saddened to hear of Raman's passing." He further opined, "He was a great cricket man and his remarkable cricket career saw success both on and off the field - as a player, official, administrator and Chair of both Surrey and the Test and County Cricket Board. Our sport owes him an enormous debt of gratitude, and on behalf of the ECB, we would like to send our sincere condolences to Raman's friends and family at this sad time."

Despite the criticism, Row’s reforms were appreciated by those who understood that first-class games were in dire need of income amid shrinking crowds. As a result, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) was kept in the loop and a marketing sub-committee was started under Row's guidance. Thus, there were boards placed all around the boundary at headquarters.

Further, Subba Row also served as manager of England's tour to India and Sri Lanka in 1981-82. In 1991, the veteran cricketer was awarded a CBE for his services to the game. Later, from 1992-2001, he also acted as a match referee for the ICC, overseeing 41 Tests and 119 ODIs.
