Lockdowns alone cannot defeat the Wuhan coronavirus. They may prove effective in slowing the virus from spreading. But they cannot stop the disease from making a comeback.

Some nations are already staring at a second wave. What the world needs right now is an infallible remedy. A guaranteed cure.

China claims to have developed one. Chinese scientists say they have found a 'novel way' to combat the novel coronavirus.

And no — it's not a drug or a compound. This new weapon is a nano-material. According to the Chinese state media — nano-materials have proved useful in absorbing and deactivating the coronavirus.

The efficiency they say ranges from 96.5 to 99.9%.

But any news from China is notoriously difficult to verify. But given the dire straits we are in — for once, let's take the risk of believing what Beijing is telling us.

Because when it comes to scientific development & research — there is no doubt that China is among the front-runners.

The country has a lab with 1500 strains of viruses. It's another thing that we don't know what they use this expertise for. But globally — there is some evidence of nano-materials proving useful in curing deadly diseases.

According to the US National Institute of Health, Nanomaterials are created out of nano-sized particles that exist in nature. They are extracted from carbon or minerals like silver. They are measured in nanometer and cannot be seen with the naked eye.

This technological army is 100,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. So what exactly can these nanomaterials do?

Nanomaterials that are scientifically engineered are used to design pharmaceuticals. They help enhance the effectiveness of therapy. They can target specific dysfunctional organs or decaying body cells.

In China — scientists say that nanomaterials are being used to bind the coronavirus and interrupt its structure through infrared light emissions.

It sounds complicated but this is what it does — the virus is absorbed or deactivated by nanomaterials.

With the effectiveness of almost 100 per cent. This should be great news. But like all things Chinese, it comes with a catch. China hasn't conducted human trials yet.

And haven't even set a date for such trials. Also, the US National Institute of health has attached certain conditions.

The body says 'even well-known nanomaterials may pose a hazard when engineered to nano-size. We know very little about the potential effects on human health and the environment.'

So there are too many question marks. When will the human-trials begin? Will nanomaterials prove useful in defeating the virus in humans?

And more importantly, will China share this cure with the world?
Or will it try to sell it? The world has suffered enough with substandard and defective Chinese test-kits.

Beijing needs to be certain about what it's telling — and selling the world.

Coronavirus outbreak: Will China share novel way to combat Covid-19 with the world?

The coronavirus outbreak has remained one step ahead of world governments but a new study from the Netherlands could very well tilt the scales in our favour.

On March 5, scientists found traces of the novel coronavirus at a wastewater facility in the city of Amersfoort.

This discovery was made before the first cases were reported in the city. So, virus traces in wastewater could serve as an early warning system for governments across the city.

Sewage surveillance is by no means a new practice. Authorities have been using this technique to monitor the usage of illegal drugs among its citizens.

In some cases, sewage surveillance can also help discover the emergence of new viruses, like in Amersfoort.

This technique can also tell us more about the severity of the impending outbreak. The presence of more virus traces indicates that the infection has spread to a large portion of the population.

Scientists who were part of this study, feel that countries like China and South Korea would do well to start sewage surveillance.

These are countries bracing for a possible second wave of infections. In the Netherlands, sewage surveillance gave the government a couple of weeks to prepare for the outbreak.

For an infection that is growing exponentially, a couple of weeks could very well be the difference between life and death.

Spain death toll hits 9,053 as virus cases pass 100,000

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg yesterday announced a $100 million support package for journalists who are suffering owing to the coronavirus induced lockdowns.

Zuckerberg has pledged help to local news outlets, and has promised an additional $25 million through the Facebook Journalism Project. Furthermore, $75 million have been sanctioned to assist journalists in marketing during the pandemic.

“As part of our efforts to support the news ecosystem and make sure everyone has access to accurate and timely information, we’re investing $100 million in new funds to support journalists, especially focused on local news,” Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post.

“Right now journalists are working under very difficult conditions to keep their communities informed and many news organizations are struggling due to the economic impact of the outbreak,” Zuckerberg added.

“Local news is especially hard hit, so we’re committing $25 million for emergency grant funding through the Facebook Journalism Project and another $75 million in marketing spend to support journalists and news organizations covering the crisis”, he added.

“This new emergency program is in addition to the $300 million we’ve committed to supporting news and local news in particular, over the next few years. We’re hoping this will support many journalists through this period so they can continue doing their critical work of keeping all of us informed,” Zuckerberg further said.

Besides helping journalists, Facebook has initiated other projects to assist the war against coronavirus. These include a $100 million programme which includes cash grants and advertising credits to assist small businesses that are suffering.

Additionally, within its operations, the company has given a $1000 bonus to 45,000 employees to provide assistance during the pandemic.

The aim of the programme is to assist journalists in carrying out their jobs during a precarious situation, as echoed by Campbell Brown, the Vice President of Facebook Global News Partnerships.

“We’re building on this work and will direct a portion of these funds to publishers most in need in the hardest hit countries. The first round of these grants went to 50 local newsrooms in the US and Canada,” Brown wrote.

“If people needed more proof that local journalism is a vital public service, they’re getting it now. And while almost all businesses are facing adverse financial effects from this crisis, we recognise we’re in a more privileged position than most and we want to help,” Brown wrote.

Given the nature of COVID-19, healthcare workers, emergency responders, and journalists come in direct contact with people carrying the disease. This poses a health risk, so it makes sense why Facebook would help out the media fraternity. It also echoes the company's newly found interest in news curation.

Facebook pledges $100 million to support news outlets suffering due to COVID-19 pandemic

The United Nations Trade and Development body (UNCTAD) announced that developing countries which garner most of their money through exports are not set to face losses between $2 to $3 billion as the COVID-19 pandemic limits investment from countries over the next two years.

In light of this, the UNCTAD yesterday claimed that such countries will require a $2.5 trillion package to avert catastrophic socio-economic impact.

Even before the pandemic’s fury reached developing countries, an economic slowdown had been emerging since the last quarter of 2019, right before the first case was discovered in China, suggested Richard Kozul-Wright, the director of globalisation and development strategies at the UNCTAD.

“The health crisis is still to come in many developing countries,” he told UN News.

“Now, if that crisis comes as these countries have been significantly weakened by the economic shockwaves from the crisis. And that is a…very vicious combination of an economic crisis and a health crisis. So we’ve got to find ways of strengthening the healthcare system and services in developing countries and building up resilience on that front very quickly”, Wright added.

Affluent countries with large-scale industries recently announced a $5 trillion global rescue package to protect the economies from crashing in the light of the pandemic which has shut down societies all over the world.

This may be able to help soften the blow “physically, economically and psychologically” - said Kozul-Wright.

Among G20 countries, a demand worth $1-2 trillion is expected to surface. This, in turn, will boost the manufacturing industry globally by two per cent.

China and India to manage?

“Even so, the world economy will go into recession this year with a predicted loss of global income in the trillions of dollars - this will spell serious trouble for developing countries, with the likely exception of China and the possible exception of India”, Kozul-Wright warned.

As witnessed by the mass exodus of migrant labourers triggered in India due to a lockdown, most developing countries have such workers in the informal sector forming the backbone of emerging economies.

UN suggests plan

The UNCTAD suggests a four-point recovery plan to avoid “a looming financial tsunami”. For this, an initial $1 trillion investment has been called for.

Additionally, the aid required right now would need an extra push, way more than the allocated amount during the 2009 financial crisis.

The official brochure of Turkmenistan's Ministry of Health has dropped any mention of the coronavirus in the information section about the prevention of viral diseases.

At a time when governments around the world are working to curb the growing coronavirus pandemic, Turkmenistan's leaders have taken extraordinary steps to suppress information about the virus.

"The Turkmen authorities have lived up to their reputation by adopting this extreme method for eradicating all information about the coronavirus," Jeanne Cavelier, the head of Reporters Without Borders' Eastern Europe and Central Asia desk, said in a Tuesday statement.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 has now infected 823,479 people worldwide and 40,636 people have been killed due to this pandemic. Around 174,019 people of that tally have recovered.

As the coronavirus pandemic rips through communities and disrupts the flow of supplies across the world, many people have been left in the lurch.

With strictly enforced lockdowns in place around the world, people who may be positive but asymptomatic have no way to know if they’re carrying the virus. Most countries are limiting their testing to symptomatic patients to fast-track critical cases, and have advised minor cases to stay at home.

Ireland’s Health Service Executive (HSE) has come up with an interesting approach to tackle this testing and diagnosis issue.

According to health services, a smartphone application to help trace potential contact will be unveiled in the next ten days.

Fuelled by Bluetooth technology, the app will detect and notify when devices come in close contact with each other.

It doesn’t sound like much. But… if a person tests positive for COVID-19, then based on the data log, people who have come in contact with the patient may be traced and quarantined.

Reported first by Business Post, the application has been described as “a cross-government effort in relation to a very important piece of technology” in countering the pandemic.

Speaking at a HSE media briefing today, HSE head of communications Paul Connors said the app is “a cross-government effort in relation to a very important piece of technology” in fighting the pandemic.

The HSE Head of Communications, Paul Connors said that they are working with multiple agencies including the Data Protection Commissioner to ensure the data is safe and uncompromised.

“It’s likely this will be rolled out in the next 10 days and certainly it is an opt-in process for people,” he said.

Additionally, the application has a feedback mechanism to track the general state of the potential infected people. “That [information] will be fed back in for epidemiological assessment as we go on”, he added.

Even though this app could help trace and tackle cases more effectively, the risks embedded into any application still linger. To deal with this, the app must be compliant with privacy and data protection laws as per global standards.

This is contingent on where the data is stored, the exact nature of information being stored, and whether the users remain anonymous. Another pertinent question that pops up is: who will have access to this data?

Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University have reported in its map that the United States has taken the grim title of the country with the most coronavirus infections and reported a record surge in unemployment.

A total of 164,610 people are infected by this deadly virus in the US, edging out Italy, which has reported the most deaths, Spain and China, where the virus was first detected in December in the metropolis of Wuhan.

Italy currently has the highest death toll of any country, reporting that 11,591 people diagnosed with COVID-19 have died.

Spain, whose outbreak is the world's second-deadliest after Italy, broke another national record of 849 deaths in one day Tuesday bringing the total number of fatalities in the country to 8,189, dampening hopes it could have passed the peak of the crisis that has debilitated the country for weeks.

Coronavirus outbreak: Global cases cross 800000; death toll rises to 40,636

As India proactively battles coronavirus, flattening the curve of cases seems to be getting difficult with each passing day.

The total number of cases in India has climbed up to 1397 with 35 people reported dead due to COVID-19. At present, there are over 1238 active cases in the country with 123 recovered patients.

However, India's trajectory is flatter than that of the United States.

Yet, given the volatility in India's daily data, it is too early to say whether the current trajectory will sustain, rise or flatten in the coming days.

Take a look at India's curve, the growth in cases has neither been exponential nor has it flattened out. The curve lies somewhere in the middle.

The US shows an exponential increase in the number of cases, whereas, India remains uniquely placed.

The US is now leading the world in coronavirus cases and several experts feel that Trump’s administration was late in taking the decision.

Although India has conducted a limited number of tests and at the same time, it has a very low percentage of positive cases among those tested with a population of more than one billion, India has not yet seen infections on the scale that the United States is experiencing.

Let’s take a look at the number of cases of both India and the US on specific dates.

On January 30, India had reported its first case where the US had its 7th virus case by March 10, the confirmed cases in India rose to 50 while the US had 937 coronavirus cases.

On March 25, 606 people were reported to have been infected in India whereas, more than 68,000 have already been infected by the deadly virus in the US.

And over the next five days, the number of cases in the US surged to make it the new epicentre of the coronavirus with India's confirmed cases standing at over 1,000.

According to a study by a Washington University, as many as 2,300 patients could be dying in the US every day by April.

With the death toll in the US is soaring, president trump has sealed the nation for an extended shutdown through April. The US Now has more than 140,000 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus and accounts for nearly one if five cases reported worldwide.

Morning news brief: COVID-19 kills 3000 in US, Iran braces for impact, and more!

The Wuhan coronavirus has exposed a leadership crisis in many parts of the world. Nowhere is this crisis more apparent than Pakistan.

The country has 1900 active cases and has recorded 25 deaths — it is among the worst-affected nations in South Asia. But Pakistan is not under a lockdown.

Because their prime minister still hasn't figured out the meaning of one. First, he kept arguing on the difference between a lockdown and a curfew.

Now Imran Khan is indulging in petty politics. The Pakistani prime minister is citing India's example to say why a lockdown won't work.

The Prime Minister’s Office also put this out on Twitter.

“We can see the consequences of India's hasty decision of imposing a complete lockdown. Their government had to apologise for their unplanned decision. We must learn and fight this pandemic with wisdom and not in haste,” Pakistan PMO wrote the micro-blogging site.

In India, there's no debate on whether or not we needed a lockdown. The questions are over implementation. And in some cases, they're fair questions.

Having said that, imperfect implementation is any day better than being told. Use faith to fight the virus. That's what the Pakistani PM is telling his people.

That's his strategy fight with your faith but it's hard to have faith when the govt deputes a scam-accused minister to lead the fight. One who was accused of smuggling 20 million masks. Given the record, faith may be too much to ask for.

As for India, the prime minister did apologise — not for the lockdown, but the inconvenience, it may have caused to the citizens of India.

Imran Khan got WION banned in Pakistan. But he may want to watch local channels once in a while to understand what is going on.

Geo-news — Pakistan's biggest tv network called out Imran khan's false claims about PM Modi's apology.

And since we're discussing apologies. The Pakistani prime minister owes one to the minority communities in his country. The Hindus and Christians.

There are hundreds of Hindu & Christian families who are being refused medical aid amid the coronavirus crisis.

Due to travel restrictions — many minority-workers have lost their only source of livelihood. Multiple reports of Pakistani NGOs denying food to these workers have emerged. Welfare organisations are giving ration-cards reportedly only to Muslim citizens.

Coronavirus outbreak exposes leadership crisis in Pakistan

In a bid to automate the drive to disinfect the city, Bengaluru has deployed 6 hexacopter drones to do the job. The hexacopters, developed by city start-ups Alpha drones and Multiplex drones are equipped with the 15-litre capacity and are manoeuvred through the city localities to disinfect it.

'The drones have a 5km range but we insist to fly them in the line of sight. We control it from a maximum of 100mt distance. The drone can fly for 25-30 minutes depending on the size of the payload. With a 15litre capacity, it can fly for the same period depending on the surroundings. It moves at a pre-set speed of 6mts per second.' says Neelsagar, Alpha Drones.

The drones are being used to cover highly crowded areas like railway stations, bus stops, markets and some of the major slums in the city. The drones use the cetrifuger automiser pump technology that enables it to disperse the disinfectant on land and air simultaneously. The disinfectant is provided by the local administration.

'We have done around 170 flights through which we have covered 45 localities like Brigade Road, Church Street, Commercial Street, Shivajinagar bus stop, Malleshwaram, Nandini Layout etc. The flight time of the drones is around 7 hours a day' says Neelsagar.

This hexacopter can fly for 25 minutes at a stretch depending on the localities and can cover an area of 10-15 metres depending on the altitude. The pilot usually follows the drone from a safe distance of 10-15 metres.

45 localities have so far been covered which includes some of the major commercial areas in the city and some bustling slums as well. The drones are being operated for 6-7 hours every day. The start-ups came onboard voluntarily and started the drive even before the purchase order was issued.

The former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Tuesday tweeted that people using hashtags like 'Tablighi virus' after the Tablighi Jammat organisation which hosted a congregation in Delhi's Nizammudin, was "more dangerous than any virus that nature could ever conjure".

After Twitter removed posts by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for spreading misinformation about ways to contain coronavirus, Facebook removed the posts across all its platforms, including Instagram.

As per company rules, the posts peddled fake news and claimed that the anti-malaria prescription drug hydroxychloroquine was an effective treatment for COVID-19

An additional video in which he claimed that social distancing needs to be avoided was also taken down.

Twitter on Sunday removed two tweets by Bolsonaro for not confirming to public health guidelines on coronavirus.

In the now deleted video, Bolsonaro told a street vendor: "What I have been hearing from people is that they want to work."

Johnson & Johnson on Monday claimed that it may be able to develop an emergency COVID-19 vaccine as early as the beginning of 2021.

To reach the time-period goal, the company has begun manufacturing already.

Even though J&J has not undertaken major vaccine programmes, it took a front seat in the current pandemic. A “candidate vaccine” along with two backups has been prepared.

Starting September, human trials will kick in. The vaccine is apparently in development “on a not-for-profit basis”.

“The world is facing an urgent public health crisis and we are committed to doing our part to make a Covid-19 vaccine available and affordable globally as quickly as possible,” Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky announced in a statement.

Besides fast-tracking the availability of the vaccine, the company is inducting a bigger workforce and expanding its manufacturing set up inside the US to meet the global demand.

The company plans to make over a billion doses, and if it works, could save thousands of lives, especially among the at-risk groups.

In collaboration with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, they will jointly spend over $1 billion on research, with additional research being undertaken to develop antivirals!

Could a coronavirus vaccine be ready by the beginning of 2021? A major company claims so!

The country is currently undergoing a 21-days lockdown to prevent the virus from spreading in the country. Forrester, a market research firm has released data which claims that the e-commerce industry in the country will take big hits from the lockdown, almost amounting to US $1 billion.

The growth rate for most companies is expected to dip to a single-digit, with a lot of monetary loss in the process.

This loss will cause a trickle-down effect, causing large losses to not only companies, but to small sellers and enterprises on online portals.

In conversation with Entrackr, Forrester’s senior forecast analyst Satish Meena, claimed that a loss of over one billion dollars is expected for e-commerce platforms.

Factors affecting the business include disruption of chain supplies, limited consumer spending, and lack of items most needed during a crisis.

Non-essential goods account for 70 per cent online sales in the country. These translated into over $32 billion, during the last year.

The previous hopes of a growth over 26 per cent has been muddled by COVID-19, along with the precautionary measures in place globally. Essentially, everything is shut down, stocks are low, and people have lesser demand.

How badly is the Indian e-commerce sector going to be hit by the coronavirus pandemic?

As the death toll owing to the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rise exponentially, cemeteries in Iraq are now refusing to bury many people.

Many cemetery workers fear that they may contract the respiratory illness from the corpses, and are thereby returning the remains to hospital morgues.

AFP reported a case along these lines recently. Saad Malik, a man in Iraq, lost his father to the coronavirus.

For over a week, Malik struggled to bury his father as cemeteries refused to bury the father.

Owing to the fear embedded into the illness, Iraqi authorities - especially religious, alongside tribes and common people, have been sending the bodies back to morgues, where the bodies are piling up.

In pics: Ignorance is bliss: World leaders who denied the gravity of COVID-19 crisis

Such pile-ups increase the risk of infection, in fact way more than the risk of getting it while burying the corpses. Additionally, basic paraphernalia like masks and gloves can prevent contracting the illness while handling the bodies.

Misinformation stems panic

This is a classic case of panic stemming from misinformation."We couldn't hold a funeral for him and haven't been able to bury his body, even though it's been more than a week since he died," Malik told AFP.

"Can you imagine that across this huge country Iraq, there aren't a few square metres to bury a small number of bodies?", he added.

Iraq, a predominantly Muslim country, has strict dictates about death. The person must be buried within 24 hours of dying, with strict prohibition of cremation.

In pics: Take a look at how global brands are endorsing social distancing to battle COVID-19

As of now, Iraq has more than 500 confirmed cases of coronavirus. Additionally, 42 people have died from the virus. The actual numbers are expected to be much higher, as very few people have been tested for the virus.

Following the global lockdown model, Iraq has imposed a national isolation programme until April 11. People have been advised to stay at home, and to practice basic hygiene.

However, local religious bodies exercise a lot of power in the country.

Earlier this week, tribal leaders prevented the burial of four bodies in a designated COVID-19 cemetery due to the fear of spreading.

When the health authorities attempted to take the bodies to a burial ground southeast of Baghdad, local people protested against it.

With no place to bury the bodies, they were all returned to the morgue, which are already overburdened globally as the death toll continues to increase everyday.

One Iraqi living near Baghdad told AFP "we decided to block any burials in our area."

"We panicked over (the health of) our children and families."

However, as asserted by the World Health Organization (WHO), COVID-19 is spread through droplets and surface contact.

Corpses don't spread COVID-19

No evidence of the virus spreading through corpses has been recorded yet.

Iraqi health ministry spokesman Seif al-Badr said that the government was taking all possible precautions when burying bodies, including wrapping them in bags, disinfecting them and placing them in special coffins.

Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, the country's top cleric, has requested authorities to cover the corpses in three layers of protective clothing before burying them.

Iraq’s two major shrine cities - Karbala and Najaf have also been rejecting burials. One of the world’s largest cemeteries is located in Najaf.

According to AFP, when the authorities tried to convince local bodies in Najaf to allow burials, they didn’t budge.

In pics: Countries spared by the COVID-19 inferno... so far!

Another man was seen requesting authorities to release the body of his deceased wife, but to no avail.

"Just give me the body and I'll bury her in my own home," AFP reported.

Iraq is set to experience the peak of its infections very soon, but the country’s healthcare is not equipped to deal with the numbers.

The conflict-ravaged country has received little investment in the last few years.

In recent years, many doctors have been threatened, abducted, and murdered over ransom, considering the dearth of medical professionals in the country.

The WHO had reported that there were only 14 hospital beds for every 10,000 people in the country.

On the other hand, France has over 60 beds for every 10,000 people.

Engineers step up

However, Iraqi engineers are stepping up their game to deal with the crisis.

An engineer, Moqtada al-Zubaidi has created a hospital bed of plexiglass, which is equipped with a respirator, an AC, a warning bell, and a television set.

Moqtada al-Zubaidi has created a hospital bed encased in plexiglass, which includes a respirator with oxygen tanks, an air conditioning unit, a bell to ring nurses and a flat-screen television.

"It's an invention with humanitarian purposes. We proposed the name 'the bed of life' because it provides security and reassurance to people who are sick," he said.

He is awaiting approval from the country’s health ministry to sanction more beds. Each costs US $4,000.

For many Iraqis, coronavirus no longer remains about death, it has now become about their struggle of finding a burial ground for their loved ones!

In pics: Ignorance is bliss: World leaders who denied the gravity of COVID-19 crisis Such pile-ups increase the risk of infection, in fact way more than the risk of getting it while burying the corpses. Additionally, basic paraphernalia like masks and gloves can prevent contracting the illness while handling the bodies. Misinformation stems panic This is a classic case of panic stemming from misinformation."We couldn't hold a funeral for him and haven't been able to bury his body, even though it's been more than a week since he died," Malik told AFP. "Can you imagine that across this huge country Iraq, there aren't a few square metres to bury a small number of bodies?", he added. Iraq, a predominantly Muslim country, has strict dictates about death. The person must be buried within 24 hours of dying, with strict prohibition of cremation. In pics: Take a look at how global brands are endorsing social distancing to battle COVID-19 As of now, Iraq has more than 500 confirmed cases of coronavirus. One Iraqi living near Baghdad told AFP "we decided to block any burials in our area." "We panicked over (the health of) our children and families." However, as asserted by the World Health Organization (WHO), COVID-19 is spread through droplets and surface contact. Corpses don't spread COVID-19 No evidence of the virus spreading through corpses has been recorded yet. Engineers step up However, Iraqi engineers are stepping up their game to deal with the crisis. (With inputs from agencies)

Speaking at the virtual G20 summit on Thursday, Indian PM Modi has said that the world has taken time to respond to the Coronavirus crisis even as he has called on a new concept of globalisation in which collective well-being of humankind is the focus.

"Even 3 months after the crisis, we are trying to find a coordinated response," PM Said, saying "G20 meeting shows international community has come together" but it has "taken some time to respond to the crisis with this magnitude and dimension".

Sources said PM's focus was the need to "look at the collective interest of all humankind" and "human aspects of our global collective conscious has been subsumed by economic and financial focus".

Calling COVID crisis "challenge and an opportunity for the grouping to look at a new concept of globalisation which looks at humanity and collective interest of all humankind".

PM noted the "alarming social and economic costs of the pandemic". 90% of the COVID-19 cases and 88% of deaths are from G20 countries.

India also called for reform of the world health organisation (WHO) at the G20 virtual summit that took place on Thursday evening.

Sources said, "PM highlighted that International Organizations like WHO need to be strengthened and reformed. WHO initially did not have the mandate to deal with the pandemic of this sort, which is why empowering of WHO is necessary be it in terms of its capacity of early warning or development of effective vaccines, or capacity building."

New Delhi also called for the need to "freely and openly share" the benefits of medical research and development and "develop adaptive, responsive and humane health care systems".

Sources said "the fact that leaders met is significant" and the "inspiration for the global collective response to the COVID crisis came from India and PM Modi in particular"

This is for the first time G20 summit took place on issues which are not economic but humanitarian. G20, formed after the 2008 financial crisis, has 20 of the world's largest economies and contributed 80% of the world's GDP and 60% of the world population.
