Coming to the second Test, Jonny Bairstow and captain Ben Stokes shined for England with the bat, helping their side win the second Test against New Zealand by five wickets and clinch the three-match series. It was a see-saw contest between the Kiwis and England. While mammoth 500-plus scores during the first innings of both sides suggested that the match could head to a draw, New Zealand ended up setting a challenging target of 299, which England chased down with five wickets and more than 20 overs to spare. With this, England has started off the Stokes-McCullum era with a series win.

Covid-19: India logs 8,822 new cases, highest daily count in 3 months

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday that he had tested positive for COVID-19 - his second bout with the illness this year - but that he was feeling OK and isolating, per health guidelines.

Trudeau was at the Summit of the Americas in California last week, where he met with U.S. President Joe Biden and other leaders to discuss issues impacting the region. He returned to Ottawa on Saturday.

"I`ve tested positive for COVID-19. I`ll be following public health guidelines and isolating. I feel okay, but that`s because I got my shots," Trudeau said in a tweet, urging others to get vaccinated or boosted, if eligible.

"Let`s protect our healthcare system, each other, and ourselves," he said.

Trudeau met with U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday and later attended a luncheon hosted by Biden, according to his itinerary. Biden was not a close contact, a White Official said on Monday.

Trudeau`s itinerary also included bilateral meetings with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader on Friday.

Trudeau`s positive test comes just days after his government said it would suspend random COVID testing at Canada`s airports for the rest of June to help ease long travel wait times.

Canada PM Justin Trudeau tests positive for COVID after Americas summit

Oil prices rose about 1 dollar in volatile trade on Tuesday as tight global supplies outweighed worries that fuel demand would be hit by a possible recession and fresh COVID-19 curbs in China.

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 96 cents, or 0.8 per cent to 121.89 dollars a barrel at 0634 GMT, while Brent crude futures rose 1.05 dollars, or 0.9 per cent, to 123.32 dollars a barrel.

Tight global supplies have been aggravated by a drop in exports from Libya amid a political crisis that has hit output and ports, while other producers in OPEC+ struggle to meet their production quotas and Russia faces bans on its oil over the war in Ukraine.

ANZ Research analysts cited Libya's oil minister Mohamed Aoun saying production in the country has dropped to 100,000 barrels per day from 1.2 million bpd last year.

"The continuing squeeze on refined products globally, as well as a lack of investment to bring online more supplies from OPEC members, or other sources, means lost Russian production is nowhere near being covered by global markets", said Jeffrey Halley, senior market analyst at OANDA, in a note.

Oil prices rise as tight supply counters China COVID, recession worries

Oil prices dropped more than 2 dollars on Monday as a flare-up in COVID-19 cases in Beijing dashed hopes for a rapid pick-up in China's fuel demand, while worries about global inflation and sluggish economic growth further depressed the market.

Brent crude futures fell 2.3 dollars, or 1.89 per cent, to 119.71 dollars a barrel by 0647 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate crude was at 118.4 dollars a barrel, down 2.27 dollars, or 1.88 per cent.

Prices fell after Chinese officials warned on the weekend of a "ferocious" spread of COVID-19 in the capital, where mass testing is planned until Wednesday.

"China remains the significant near-term downside risk, but most view the gradual normalisation of Chinese demand as a powerful positive for oil", Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management said in a note.

That was despite the potential for lockdown noise in coming weeks, Innes added, with demand still far from reflecting normal conditions.

Oil falls on Beijing's COVID-19 warning and inflation concerns

Staff reviewers of US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Sunday that Pfizer-BioNTech's COVID vaccines were safe and effective for children from ages 6 months to 4 years.

The FDA reviewers said in briefing documents published on Sunday evening that their evaluation did not reveal any new safety concerns related to the use of the vaccine in young children.

The FDA analysis of data from Pfizer's trial was published ahead of a June 15 meeting of its outside advisers. Recommendations from these external advisers will determine the FDA's decision on the vaccines.

"Available data support the effectiveness of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine 3-dose primary series in preventing COVID-19 in the age group of 6 months through 4 years," FDA staff said in the review.

An early analysis of data from Pfizer-BioNTech's vaccine based on 10 symptomatic COVID-19 cases identified when the Omicron coronavirus variant was dominant suggested a vaccine efficacy of 80.3% in the under-5 age group.

COVID vaccines for children under the age of 6 are not yet approved in most countries. Due to low demand for vaccines in for kids aged 5 to 11, it is also not known how many parents would get their young ones vaccinated.

"We thank all the Congressmen & women as also all well wishers for their concern and good wishes," Surjewala added. Earlier in the day, sources told news agencies that Sonia visited the hospital for a routine checkup and was being examined by doctors. However, it was not clear that she will be admitted. The president of the Congress party tested positive for Covid infection on June 2. The report emerged a day after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned her and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case. She was supposed to appear before the ED on June 8 but now it has been postponed as she has been asked to appear before it on June 23. The ED has registered an FIR in a money-laundering case related to the National Herald-AJL case. WATCH | Surge in Monkeypox cases increases vaccine demands ×

US scientists with the Food and Drug Administration said in a new analysis of data released on Friday that Moderna's coronavirus vaccine is safe and effective for young children and infants. At a meeting next week, the FDA's outside advisors will review this information and decide whether to approve the company's vaccine for babies and children under the age of five.

Children under the age of five are still the only people in the United States who are not eligible for a coronavirus vaccine.

In April, Moderna submitted an emergency use permission request to the FDA for the vaccination of children aged 6 months to under 6 years.

Pfizer and BioNTech are also requesting emergency use permission for their coronavirus vaccine for children. Next Monday, the FDA's outside advisers will review Pfizer and BioNTech's vaccine.

On June 17 and 18, the CDC's advisory committee will meet to approve the vaccinations developed by the firms.

The Biden administration announced this week that it has made 10 million COVID-19 vaccine doses available for young children and newborns, anticipating acceptance of the authorization. The first dosages are expected to be available by June 21.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which examined data from Moderna's clinical studies independently, found that vaccine effectiveness against symptomatic Covid-19 cases was 51% in babies aged six months to less than two years old and 37% in children aged two to five years.

According to the FDA, the statistics are lower than those found in adult clinical trials because the trials for very young children were conducted during a wave connected to the Omicron variation.

"Although the VE (vaccine efficacy) ... in children six months to five years is lower than that observed in the pivotal adult or older paediatric studies, it is highly consistent with real-world vaccine effectiveness observed against Omicron in adults," the FDA said in a statement.

Despite the fact that Moderna's vaccine is less effective against the Omicron variety, the FDA noted that it is still quite effective against severe cases of the disease.

As a result, the FDA determined that the Moderna data "supports the administration" of the vaccine in two doses of 100 micrograms each in teenagers aged 12 to 17, 50 micrograms in children aged six to eleven, and 25 micrograms in toddlers aged six months to five years.

Moderna's vaccination is currently only available to those aged 18 and up in the United States.

COVID-19: India registers 4,518 fresh cases, 9 deaths in 24 hrs; tally above 4k-mark for second day

The Indian Health Ministry has warned of a slight Covid-19 surge in the last week, with Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan writing to Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, urging them to use a risk-assessment-based approach in public health responses to avoid losing the gains made so far in the pandemic fight.

Over the last three months, India has seen a steady and considerable decrease in Covid-19 cases, according to the Ministry. However, in the last week, there has been a modest increase in instances, with 15,708 cases reported in the week ending June 3, 2022.

In addition, the weekly positivity rate has increased from 0.52 percent on May 27, 2022 to 0.73 percent on June 3, 2022.

According to the Centre, a few states are contributing more cases to India's total, indicating the risk of infection spreading locally.

Officials have been advised by the Secretary to push Covid-19 suitable behaviour monitoring clusters of new Covid-19 instances.

States have been required to ensure that enough testing is carried out in accordance with the standards. They've been told to keep a close eye on influenza-like sickness (ILI) and SARI patients in all health facilities.

Thousands forced to quarantine after Beijing man breaks COVID-19 rules

Monkeypox outbreaks: A list of countries that recorded cases recently. Will it be like COVID-19 pandemic?

The COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill but with a huge amount of the world’s population getting vaccinated, it looks like the journey towards normalcy has already started. But there seems to be a new problem plaguing a number of countries as the number of monkeypox cases are going up with every passing day. The total number of cases in the United Kingdom has already gone up to 78 with seven more cases on Wednesday but scientists believe that the monkeypox virus has been circulating unsuspected in multiple nations for quite some now.

The UK has reported the highest number of cases in the world till now with around 20-25 countries getting affected in the last month alone. According to the official data, around 200 cases have been detected around the world and although it has existed in parts of Africa in the past, this is the first outbreak of the monkeypox virus outside the continent.

Professor David Heymann, who chairs a World Health Organization expert group on infectious threats to global health, believes that the virus has been present in the UK for the last two to three years, but the impact was not detected earlier.

“It could hypothetically be that the virus transmission amplified from this low level of transmission when by chance it entered the population that is at present amplifying transmission,” Heymann said according to The Guardian.

The scientists have been conducting studies on the virus right now and it seems to be a mutated version of the same virus that reached the UK in 2018.

“This may be a virus that’s been circulating undetected for quite a while. They all have a common ancestor and that common ancestor probably dates back to 2019, though it’s too early to date with any kind of accuracy,” said Prof Marc Van Ranst, a virologist at the University of Leuven in Belgium as quoted by The Guardian report.

Covid-19: Saudi citizens banned from travelling to India, 15 other nations

Pfizer has said that the three-dose vaccine created by them has shown 80 per cent effectiveness against the Omicron COVID-19 infection among children aged between six months and five years.

This is good news for parents as cases continue to rise once again around the world and according to the timeline presented by Pfizer, the vaccine is expected to be authorised by July this year. The company said in its statement that the vaccine has produced extremely positive results in the tests till now and if authorised, the vaccine will comprise of three shots of three micrograms each.

“We are pleased that our formulation for the youngest children, which we carefully selected to be one-tenth of the dose strength for adults, was well tolerated and produced a strong immune response,” said Albert Bourla, Pfizer's chairman and chief executive officer in the statement.

The development meant that Pfizer are closer to getting an emergency use authorisation for the vaccine and according to ABC News, the FDA will be reviewing their application on June 21 and 22.

If authorised, the company will be able to release the vaccine in the market by July and according to experts, the high efficacy against symptomatic COVID-19 infection can be great news for patients.

However, Pfizer has made it clear that the results are preliminary and they will be conducting more tests in the future. They also warned that there can be some side effects from the vaccines in all age groups and they are looking to test it on a larger sample to verify all of their results.

COVID-19: 'Positive trend' as 'fever' cases in North Korea dip

The United States officially surpassed 1 million known deaths from COVID-19 on Thursday, according to a New York Times database, a cataclysmic outcome that only hints at the suffering of millions more Americans who are mourning their parents, children, siblings, friends and colleagues.

“Hopefully, the enormity of that number would spur us on to do whatever we can to make sure that we don’t have as bad a time in the coming months and years that we’ve had over the past two years,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden, told a Boston public radio station, WGBH, this month.

Some initial forecasts put the number of Americans likely to die from the virus between 100,000 and 240,000, although officials warned that the death toll could climb if protective measures weren’t taken. The United States reached 100,000 in May 2020, and 200,000 a few months later, in September.

The United States has a higher rate of infection than many other wealthy countries do, and the virus has continued to spread in a population afflicted by inequity, political divisions, a sometimes overwhelmed public health system, and an inconsistent array of policies and responses.

Although COVID-19 stole lives from all strata of society, it magnified disparities, and some groups have been more vulnerable than others to infection, based on factors such as sex, age, health care access, income and housing.

The virus arrived in the United States by early 2020, setting off five distinct waves of new cases over the 26 months that followed. An unexpected early wave in the spring of 2020 was followed by another wave in the winter, when access to vaccines was still very limited; more Americans died in that wave than in any other period.

In January 2021, the country’s daily death toll peaked, with more than 3,300 deaths recorded each day in the United States. And then came new waves: delta in the summer of 2021 and omicron in the late fall and winter. Omicron caused illness that was milder for some, though not for all; even so, it spread so swiftly and so widely that U.S. deaths surged again, and peaked in the first week of February, when more than 2,500 Americans a day were dying.

Now, in mid-May, Americans are still dying — more than 300 a day on average, as of Wednesday. Vaccines are readily available to nearly everyone other than young children, but even so, about 34% of people across the country have not been inoculated against the virus, and about 70% have received no booster, despite the vaccines’ effectiveness at preventing severe disease and death.

“It’s reaching a point now with COVID, where some very obvious scientific truths based on clear-cut, very visible data are rejected by people,” Fauci said on WGBH. “When it gets in the way of the proper and appropriate response to a deadly outbreak, it becomes even more tragic.”

As of Tuesday, the average of new confirmed coronavirus cases surpassed 100,000 a day again, as omicron subvariants have spread across the country. And those figures are thought to be undercounts, especially since at-home test results often go unreported. Hospitalizations are on the rise, mostly on the East Coast; on average as of Wednesday, just over 22,800 Americans are in hospitals with the coronavirus on a given day, 27% more than two weeks ago.

Although each of the 1 million victims has a unique story, they leave behind a shared feeling among their loved ones, who say the lives of the dead have been pushed to the side in a country eager to get on with post-pandemic life. As it is, there is no national memorial to the people who have died, no shared remembrance, no communal place to gather or to receive a nation’s sympathy. There is only a number, a horrifying number.

“When it gets in the way of the proper and appropriate response to a deadly outbreak, it becomes even more tragic.” As of Tuesday, the average of new confirmed coronavirus cases surpassed 100,000 a day again, as omicron subvariants have spread across the country.

The Japan Football Association (JFA) has been informally approached about the possibility of replacing China as hosts of next year`s Asian Cup, Chairman Kozo Tashima told Nikkan Sports. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced last Saturday that China had pulled out of hosting the 24-team continental championship, citing the COVID-19 situation in the country.

"We were sounded out," Tashima told the newspaper, without giving further details. "If Japan were able to host, there`s no question that it would be pretty exciting." The JFA was not immediately available for comment. Japan has the stadium infrastructure in place to stage the tournament in June and July next year, having co-hosted the World Cup in 2002, rugby`s global showpiece in 2019 and the Olympic soccer tournament last year.

Other potential hosts such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Australia would need the tournament moved back to late 2023 or early 2024. Qatar, which will host the World Cup later this year, and Saudi Arabia would be inhospitable in the middle of the year because of the summer heat, while Australia is co-hosting the women`s World Cup in July and August 2023.

Last year`s Tokyo Olympics were held in a bio-secure bubble with limited local crowds because of fears of athletes and officials spreading the novel coronavirus. Japan said on Tuesday, however, that it would start conducting "test tourism" in the form of limited package tours in May as a way of gathering information prior to a full re-opening of the country to tourism.

Tourists have not been permitted to enter Japan since the country adopted strict border controls in 2020 at the start of the pandemic. Japan has won the Asian Cup a record four times and previously hosted the tournament in 1992, when only eight teams took part. The AFC, which has not responded to requests for information about the process of replacing the host country, is meeting for its 32nd Congress in Kuala Lumpur later on Wednesday.

According to the strongest evidence yet, sniffer dogs are even better at detecting COVID than testing. Scientists have claimed that dogs' excellent sense of smell might be used to detect people harbouring the virus throughout the epidemic.

However, promising lab results — from dogs exposed to substances in carefully controlled environments — needed to be duplicated in real-world settings.

New research from the University of Helsinki shows that Labrador retrievers and white shepherds can detect up to 97 percent of positive cases.

According to the study, trained dogs are 99 percent accurate in determining who is virus-free among airport passengers.

The rapid rise of COVID-19 cases in Shanghai led to widespread panic in China and although the lockdown was able to decrease the cases, reports of food shortages and less than satisfactory living conditions continued to plague the citizens. However, it seems that normal life is set to return to Shanghai once more as the authorities plan to end the lockdown measures from June 1. It will mark the end of a tough six-week period which had a severe impact on both social and economic fronts.

Shanghai deputy mayor Zong Ming said on Monday that the city’s reopening will be carried out in phases and the restrictions on movement of the citizens will be removed after May 21.

“From June 1 to mid- and late June, as long as risks of a rebound in infections are controlled, we will fully implement epidemic prevention and control, normalise management and fully restore normal production and life in the city,” she said according to a report by Reuters.

The authorities also said that the first phase will be starting with reopening reopen supermarkets, convenience stores and pharmacies from Monday. China’s railway operator will also increase the number of trains arriving and departing the city and the same will be done with domestic flights.

The relationship between the United States’ top infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci and former president Donald Trump has always been quite rocky. Both of them have publicly stated their disliking for each other and it looks like the situation has not changed at all. Fauci made it clear on Sunday that he will resign from his position if Trump is re-elected as President in 2024.

Fauci, who has served under seven US Presidents till date and was a vocal critic of the former president’s handling of COVID-19, said during his CNN interview that he will leave as the director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases if Trump wins the elections in 2024.

In the interview, he once again said that he does not trust Trump’s ability to handle a public health emergency and said that the previous administration’s response to COVID-19 was ‘not optimal’.

“If you look at the history of what the response was during the administration, I think at best you could say it wasn’t optimal. And I just think history will speak for itself. I don’t need to make any further comment about that – it’s not productive,” Fauci told CNN in his interview.
