Just few weeks before the commencement of the US Open 2022 edition, which will be the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, there is good news for Novak Djokovic and his ardent fans. The unvaccinated Djokovic's participation in the forthcoming showpiece event, in the Flushing Meadows, has received a big boost after USA confirmed changes to the Covid rules.

The American authorities have decided they will not discriminate between those who have taken the COVID jab and those who are yet to. Thus, this will pave way to allow the 2022 Wimbledon champion Djokovic to take part in the mega event, which will get underway on August 29. The Serbian has remained firm on his stance of not taking the Covid vaccine, which had also resulted in him being sent back to his home country from Australia for the 2022 Australian Open early this year.

When Zuo tested positive for Covid-19 while working as a cleaner in one of Shanghai's largest quarantine centres, she hoped it wouldn't be long before she could pick up the mop and start earning again.

But four months on, she is still fighting to get her job back -- one of scores of recovering Covid patients facing what labour rights activists and health experts say is a widespread form of discrimination in zero-Covid China.

Using snap lockdowns and mass testing, China is the last major economy still pursuing the goal of stamping out the virus completely.

India has approved Biological E's Corbevax as a precaution dose for the population above 18 years, Union health secretary Rajesh Bhushan said. It can be administered after the completion of six months from the date of administration of the second dose of either Covaxin or Covishield vaccines.

Notably, this is the first time that a booster dose that is different from the one used for primary vaccination against COVID-19 has been allowed in the country.

"In addition to the existing homologous precaution dose, the option of a heterologous precaution dose with Corbevax would be available to all persons above 18 years of age," Bhushan said in the letter.

The Union health ministry reportedly took the decision following the recommendations of the COVID-19 Working Group of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI). It had reviewed data of the double-blind randomised phase-3 clinical study which evaluated the immunogenicity and safety of booster dose of Corbevax vaccine when administered to COVID-19-negative adult volunteers of age 18-80 years previously vaccinated with two doses of either Covishield or Covaxin.

Corbevax is currently being used to inoculate children in the age group of 12 to 14 years.

A recent data analysis by New Zealand Herald shows that coronavirus (COVID-19) has become the equal leading cause of death in the country for the first time in July.

A recent data analysis by New Zealand Herald shows that coronavirus (COVID-19) has become the equal leading cause of death in the country for the first time in July. The report stated that Covid has been directly responsible for one in seven recent deaths. The data show that Covid is even with ischaemic heart disease as the No 1 killer in the country as the deadly virus has overtaken stroke. Citing one cause of death, the report mentioned that Covid claimed five times as lives as those lost in car accidents last year. As per the analysis, 836 people died across New Zealand in the week ending July 17. At that particular time, the second Omicron wave was peaking. The analysis noted that of those 836 deaths, 120 were directly attributed to Covid. The relaxation was for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic closed the borders in March 2020. Some of the restrictions started to ease in February this year when New Zealand's borders began reopening. Notably, most visitors arriving in New Zealand still need to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and must take two COVID tests after arriving. Some relief as there are no quarantine requirements. The World Health Organisation recently released its weekly assessment of the pandemic released on Wednesday (August 3), according to which the new coronavirus cases fell by 9 per cent globally last week but the deaths remained steady. As per the report, 6.5 million virus cases and more than 14,000 fatalities were reported in the previous week. The US, South Korea, and Germany reported the highest numbers of new coronavirus cases. The United States reported the highest number of deaths. The WHO recently expressed concern that countries’ recent reductions in Covid testing and other alert systems have seriously hampered its efforts in monitoring COVID-19.

As per the health organisation, the number of cases decreased in Europe by 35 per cent but increased in the Western Pacific and Asia by nearly 20 per cent and 5 per cent respectively, AP reported.

COVID-19: WHO’s recent report states new cases fell by 9% globally, deaths remain steady

In a study published online on Tuesday (August 2), it is stated despite being treated with the antiviral Paxlovid, around a third of people with coronavirus (COVID-19) will experience a rebound of their symptoms.

The preprint study, titled 'Viral and Symptom Rebound in Untreated COVID-19 Infection' found that 27 per cent of people with Covid saw a rebound in their symptoms. The study also mentioned that they had initially improved. Preprint means that the study has not been published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Dr Davey Smith, who is the study co-author, said, "It happens all the time. People who are untreated with Covid who then feel better can get symptoms afterward." Dr Smith is also the chief of infectious diseases and global public health at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

Around 12 per cent of people who have tested for coronavirus, had a "viral rebound", which means days after testing negative, they tested positive again. The study further mentioned that the findings are from people who have taken Paxlovid.

Dr Smith said that the return of symptoms could be worse or maybe not as bad as the first bout. He noted: "It’s just the variability in the natural course of the infection."

As mentioned by NBC News, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said that there is a possibility of symptom recurrence in untreated Covid patients.

In May, the health agency issued a health alert to inform physicians about Paxlovid rebounds. COVID-19 can rebound even in those who haven't taken Paxlovid: Study

The lost sense of smell has been one of the major symptoms that act as an identifier for coronavirus (COVID-19) from the beginning. After the deadly virus was first reported in late 2019, people were not aware of its symptoms. At that time, loss of smell and taste were presumably the early symptoms of Covid.

Apart from that, the lost sense of smell was considered to be a warning sign for dementia. Now, researchers are probing whether Covid-related loss of smell might also be associated with cognitive decline.

Preliminary findings of a study which was presented on Sunday (July 31) at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in San Diego suggest that there may be a link between Covid-related loss of smell might be linked to cognitive impairment.

Some studies have established that some Covid patients later develop cognitive impairment after their infection. Although, the experts have said that more research is needed to establish a concrete result regarding whether or not Covid-related loss of smell can be linked to cognitive decline.

A recent study stated that about five per cent of patients with confirmed cases of Covid are estimated to have suffered a long-lasting loss of smell or taste. Such cases are potentially contributing to the burden of long Covid.

Eggs have become the newest food item to experience supply chain problems in Australia. Morning fry-ups may no longer be a breakfast option for people. Woolworths, a supermarket chain representative, said that decreased output on certain farms had an impact on the availability of locally produced eggs in several areas. The supermarket warned that as a result, customers might face availability problems. The firm is currently trying to boost its availability. Similarly, Coles had a two-carton limit on eggs per customer, but Woolworths didn’t have any restrictions.

A legislation was passed in 2018, which stated that egg-producing chickens should have access to the outdoors for at least eight hours a day, The Guardian reported.

The Victorian director of Egg Farmers of Australia, Brian Ahmed, claims that the sector produces enough eggs to satisfy the needs of Australians. Contradicting the legislation, Ahmed said that this implies that during winters, they would face difficulty in producing eggs. He further added that the reopening of cafes and restaurants after the lockdown decreased the demand for eggs instantly. The COVID-19 pandemic has been extremely harmful for major entertainment destinations around the world and Macau was no different. The world’s largest gambling hub saw a huge fall in tourism with businesses struggling to keep their doors open. However, the situation is finally going back to normal with the city reopening its public services and entertainment facilities from Tuesday. According to the new order, no Covid cases were found in the last nine days and as a result, the authorities has decided to allow most services to resume in the major tourist destination.

In June, Macau experienced its worst wave of Covid infections as around 1800 people were infected and that resulted in complete lockdown of the city. While the casinos were permitted to open in late July, this is the first time that the tough restrictions will be finally lifted in the city.

Beauty salons, fitness centers, and bars too will be allowed to resume operations, the government said in a statement on Monday. However, wearing masks will remain compulsory in all public areas and most major businesses will require a negative Covid test certificate before allowing access.

“There have been no community infection cases in Macau for nine consecutive days ... and the risk of the spread of the coronavirus has been greatly reduced,” the authorities told Reuters.

The last two years have been devastating for the casinos in Macau with all of them suffering losses due to the pandemic. Even after the reopening, the footfall has not reached pre-pandemic levels and experts believe it will take some time for normalcy to return in the “Las Vegas of the east”.

Javelin world champion Kelsey-Lee Barber's bid to also win the Commonwealth title was dealt a blow Thursday, with the Australian testing positive for Covid-19, team officials said.

Barber, who claimed her second world crown last week at Eugene, Oregon in the United States, tested positive at the Australian team camp ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this week. But with the women's javelin final not until August 7, she could still compete. "Kelsey-Lee Barber is not out (of the Games)," the team's high-performance manager Andrew Faichney told Australian media.

"I have to reconfirm, but I think the organising committee has said that if an athlete is well and healthy enough, then they are going to be able to compete, and so that is what we are working through." Barber, who won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, retained her world title with a throw of 66.91 metres, ahead of American Kara Winger and Japan's Haruka Kitaguchi.

Two new studies into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic have once again pointed the finger towards the Wuhan wet market in China. Scientists say they have compelling evidence to back claims that the Huanan seafood and wildlife market was at the center of the pandemic.

Two peer reviewed studies on origin of COVID-19 published

The COVID-19 pandemic has slowed down a bit over time but the impacts of long Covid can still be found among people all around the world. With more people suffering from long Covid, the impact on health as well as economy has been significant in recent times. According to new research, since 2020, the loss amounts to around £1.5 billion a year in total for British workers.

It further states that around 110,000 workers in the United Kingdom showed symptoms of long Covid, and it has resulted in a loss of earnings amounting to around £1,100 ($1,320) each. Due to the persistent symptoms, people have lost significant amount of time and it has adversely affected their economic conditions.

Long covid is the name given to the scenario where an individual keeps experiencing symptoms for more than four weeks after the initial infection, according to the World Health Organisation.

The research, which was conducted by Institute for Fiscal Studies, also said that one in 10 people suffering from long Covid had to lose out on significant earnings due to the long leaves.

“The impact of long Covid has continued to grow over time, with almost 2 million now suffering from the condition,” Tom Wernham, a research economist at the IFS, told Bloomberg.

“For a significant minority of long Covid sufferers, the condition has severe effects not only on their health but on their ability to do paid work,” he further explained in the research report.

“I checked in with his team late last night. He was feeling well. He had a good day yesterday. He’s got a viral syndrome, an upper respiratory infection … and he’s doing just fine,” he explained.

Biden, who has already received both vaccination doses and two booster shots, tested positive for the BA.5 variant on Thursday and his physician, Kevin O’Connor, said his “predominant symptom now is a sore throat”. He added that Biden is currently prescribed a daily regime of Paxlovid.

“And obviously if he has persistent symptoms, if any of them interfere with his ability to carry out his duties, we will disclose that early and often.”

“But I suspect this is going to be a course of Covid that we’ve seen in many Americans who have been fully vaccinated, double-boosted, getting treated with those tools in hand. You know, the president has been doing well, and we’re gonna expect that he’s going to continue to do so,” Jha added.

Joe Biden ‘doing just fine’ after contracting COVID-19, says White House

There has been a steady surge of COVID-19 cases all around the world and the trend seems to be continuing in Australia. The country saw 5450 cases on Monday – a record since the pandemic started – and the official data stated that the majority of cases were from the Omicron sub-variants.

It has come as a major surprise for experts who expected the numbers to peak in June when the BA.4 and BA.5 strains were extremely dominant. However, the curve has refused to go down and according to Reuters, most specialists has compared its infection rate to that of measles.

Previously, the highest number of cases recorded in a day in Australia was 5390 in January. It was beginning of the Omicron surge but even the death toll numbers were less at that point.

With several aged care centres battling a shortage of staff, the support of defence personnel in such facilities is to be extended until the end of September, Defence Minister Richard Marles said.

Wimbledon 2022 champion Novak Djokovic has been dealt with a huge blow. The Serbian's Covid-19 vaccination is not a hidden fact anymore and his reluctance to take the jab is set to rule him out of the US Open 2022 edition, i.e. the last Grand Slam of the calendar year.

With the tournament organisers set to abide by the US government's guidelines on Covid vaccination, Djokovic's refusal to get vaccinated will eventually prevent him from entering the country for the forthcoming showpiece event. Despite this, he has been named on the entry list. If he doesn't participate in the tournament, the 35-year-old will also miss a golden opportunity to level with Rafael Nadal in terms of most Grand Slam titles in men's singles (22). After the Wimbledon win, over Nick Kyrgios, Djokovic has 21 major titles.

Just after winning Wimbledon 2022 on July 10, the Serbian superstar had pointed out, "I'm not vaccinated and I'm not planning to get vaccinated so the only good news I can have is them removing the mandated green vaccine card or whatever you call it to enter United States or exemption." He added, "I don't know. I don't think exemption is realistically possible. If that is possibility, I don't know what exemption would be about. I don't know. I don't have much answers there."

New coronavirus cases in Japan's capital hit a record on Thursday, surging past 30,000 for the first time since the pandemic began, spurring officials to call for more vigilance.

Tokyo's 31,878 new infections far outstripped a previous high in February, and many other regions also reported highs. Thursday's national tally of 186,229 new infections was a record.

Despite few serious cases and deaths, officials warned hospitals were starting to feel the pressure from rising numbers.

"We need to keep a close eye on the infection situation, including the issue of access to medical services, with the highest vigilance," Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told a regular news conference.

New COVID-19 infections nationwide were at their highest ever, he added.

Despite the surge, officials, including Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, have not called for new coronavirus curbs. Nearly all Japanese still wear masks indoors, and many use them outside as well, while most stores require them.

Tokyo residents said the surge was worrying.

"I think it's really shocking that it's more than 30,000," said Ai Okamura, a 30-year-old office worker. "Because I live with my grandmother, it makes me feel much more cautious."

Others said they felt people had relaxed their vigilance in recent months as infections fell.

"Maybe since spring, everyone has calmed down and gone back to normal," said systems engineer Shimichi Koyama, aged 55.

"So it was predictable to a certain extent," he said, referring to the new surge.

Tokyo's daily COVID cases cross 30,000 for first time in pandemic

The White House revealed on Thursday morning that US President Joe Biden has COVID-19, but he was only showing minor symptoms. His physician reported that he had a runny nose, a dry cough, and lethargy. Despite being in close contact, First Lady Jill Biden tested negative, but she stated that he was doing fine.

According to press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, the 79-year-old is feeling "very mild symptoms" but will continue to perform all of his duties despite being completely immunised and having gotten two booster shots. She also said that the president was taking the antiviral drug Paxlovid. He is "doing good," according to First Lady Jill Biden, and she has tested negative. The president will continue to work in seclusion until his test results are negative, in accordance with White House practise.

Prior to taking office, 79-year-old Biden received two doses of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine. A first booster shot was given to him in September, then a second one on March 30. Even while the illness claimed close advisers and aides, he had avoided it thanks to strict White House safeguards.

Even with the testing measures in place for those anticipated to be in close contact with him, Biden's resistance to the virus up until this point seemed to defy the odds. The illness has already spread through the political class in Washington, infecting senators, Vice President Kamala Harris, Cabinet members, White House personnel, and others. Biden has increased his trip frequency and started doing sizable indoor events again where not everyone is put to the test.

Top White House officials have recently been frank about the president's chances of contracting COVID, a sign of how pervasive the disease has become and how little of a threat it poses to individuals who have access to treatment and are up to date on their vaccines.

Covid wave hits resort in China, thousands stranded

Had you contracted Covid-19? Perhaps you should clean out your freezer. According to a recent study, SARS-CoV-2 virus cousins can live for up to 30 days on frozen fish and pork.Research on frozen chicken, beef, pigs, and salmon was done in response to Covid-19 outbreaks in Asia where packaged meat was suspected as being the virus' source. The research results were released on June 11 in the American Society for Microbiology journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

The researchers stored the meat and fish products at both refrigeration (4 degrees Celsius) and freezer temperatures (minus 20 degrees C).

According to research lead author Emily S. Bailey, an assistant professor at Campbell University in the US, "you might not preserve meat in the fridge for 30 days, but you might store it in the freezer for that long."

"We even found that the viruses could be cultured after (being frozen for) that length of time," Bailey said in a statement.

The researchers decided to conduct the study after finding that COVID-19 outbreaks were happening in Southeast Asia prior to community transmission.

According to Bailey, the study is crucial because SARS-CoV-2 can multiply not only in the respiratory tract but also in the stomach. One RNA virus with a lipid envelop, two animal coronaviruses, murine hepatitis virus, and transmissible gastroenteritis virus were all used as surrogates in the study. All three viruses have been utilised in the past as stand-ins for SARS-CoV-2, with refrigeration temperatures often showing higher reductions in their numbers than freezing temperatures. The number of people decreased in different ways depending on the food used.

Covid-19 vaccines are crucial to fight against the pandemic. Countries with high inoculation drives have shown drop in cases and less severity. Storing vaccines can be tricky, if they are not kept in an advisable temperature they become unusable. So, experts in Kenya have taken help from climate experts to solve this obstacle.

In response to a recent increase in infections and hospitalisations across Europe, the European Union health agencies on Monday (July 11), advised a second COVID-19 booster for everyone over 60 as well as medically fragile individuals. Despite the fact that the virus has changed, existing coronavirus vaccinations still offer substantial protection against hospitalisation and death. Since April, the most vulnerable and elderly people have only been advised to receive a second booster. The new advice is anticipated to make it easier for governments to speed up the vaccination programmes, Reuters reported.

In a statement, Andrea Ammon, director of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), said, "We are currently seeing increasing COVID-19 case notification rates and an increasing trend in hospital and ICU admissions and occupancy in several countries, mainly driven by the BA 5 sub lineage of the Omicron (coronavirus variant)." She said that providing the elderly and medically fragile a second boost now will prevent a sizable number of hospitalisation and deaths.

In order to tackle the BA.1 Omicron variant, vaccine manufacturers including Moderna Inc. and partners Pfizer Inc. and BioTech have been testing modified versions of their coronavirus vaccines. They observed a reduced immune response against BA.4 and BA.5, despite the fact that they claimed these vaccinations produced a good immune response against the variants.

The ECDC on Monday further said that currently there is no convincing evidence to recommend the administration of a second booster dosage to people younger than 60 years of age who are not at increased risk of severe infection.

COVID-19: European Union advises second booster for people above 60 years

Hospitals in the United Kingdom are struggling with staff absences, exhaustion, persistent backlogs and issues with discharging patients as Covid infection levels continue to rise. As per the data released by the Office for National Statistics indicates, almost 2.71 million people in the country had Covid in the last week of June, which is an 18 per cent increase from the week prior. According to the report, one in every 25 people in the country was infected with Covid. Hospitalisation in the country is also increasing, which showed that there were 11,316 people with the virus, up from 8,350 on June 23, reported by The Guardian.

As of July 5, there were 3,749 patients in the UK who were hospitalised primarily as a result of the Covid, up from 2,877 from the day prior.

Hospital admission for Covid has increased, as per Dr. David Strain, a senior clinical lecturer at the University of Exeter medical school, who said that patients with infection may exhibit respiratory issues or delirium. He further added that the spike in the number of infection cases had also had a drastic effect on labour issues with Brexit, pensions and weariness. According to Strain, issues poised by the rise in infections have been exacerbated by the changes in policy around patient testing and wearing masks in hospitals.

He said, "This wave, which is driven by the highly transmissible BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron sub-variants, started to hit us at exactly the same time that there was significant government pressure to stop wearing masks in hospitals because of the way it appeared. And therefore, for a very brief period, there was a fair amount of in hospital transmission as well."

Patients who have Covid or have been exposed to it cannot be discharged to care facilities, a concern raised by Strain.

Dr. Naru Narayanan, president of HCSA, the doctors’ union, said that they are concerned about the rising cases in the country. He also noted reports of staff absences from growing virus cases across the country.

"NHS staff are already under intense pressure amid a workforce crisis and morale is at rock bottom," he said. He further continued, "Exhausted staff are stepping up to ensure that patient care does not suffer, but every week is a battle to fill rotas. The wisdom of watering down infection control procedures and removing face masks now looks decidedly lacking. "
