Millions of people in the Chinese megacity of&nbsp;Chengdu&nbsp;emerged Monday from a Covid-19 lockdown that had closed schools, disrupted businesses and forced residents to stay home for over two weeks.

With a population of 21 million, southwest China's&nbsp;Chengdu&nbsp;is the largest Chinese city to shut down since global finance hub Shanghai imposed a strict two-month lockdown in April, leaving many residents scrambling for food.

China is the last major economy welded to a zero-Covid strategy and officials are under pressure to curb virus flare-ups swiftly ahead of a key political meeting in mid-October.

"With the joint efforts of the whole city, the epidemic has been effectively controlled," the&nbsp;Chengdu&nbsp;government said in a statement Sunday.

Government departments, public transport services and companies were able to resume work on Monday, the statement said, after shutting down on September 1.

Chengdu&nbsp;will continue to conduct mass testing, and anyone who wants to enter a public area or take public transport will require a negative Covid test result within 72 hours -- similar to the rules in other large cities including Beijing and Shanghai.

Schools will re-open in an "orderly manner" and returning students will be strictly tested, the statement said.

Gyms, swimming pools, mahjong clubs and other indoor entertainment venues must all check whether patrons have a negative test result within 48 hours.

No new cases were reported in the city on Monday.

During the strict lockdown some residents confined to their homes could not even flee when a strong earthquake in a nearby part of Sichuan province reverberated through the city earlier this month, locals told AFP.

Chengdu&nbsp;will host the world team table tennis championships at the end of September in a "closed-loop" bubble that will be China's first international sports event since the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics in February and March.

Several other cities including the southern tech hub of Shenzhen and Guiyang in south China, where Apple's China data centre is located, have all had targeted lockdowns and travel restrictions in recent weeks as officials rushed to curb mini outbreaks.

Israel will start vaccinating its population with variant-tailored second-generation coronavirus vaccine from Pfizer, which is better suited to fight against new COVID-19 strains, by the end of this month, according to a media report on Thursday.

The consignment of the vaccines landed in Israel on Tuesday and is expected to reach the clinics by the end of September, coronavirus task force chief Salman Zarka announced on Wednesday.

Zarka, however, did not specify as to how many new shots were delivered by Pfizer, The Times of Israel newspaper reported. 
 
He said they are expected to be available in clinics within two weeks or at least by the end of the month, the report said.

Zarka also did not share details of how the vaccines were to be administered. In the earlier phases, it started with front-line workers and those at high risk.

"The vaccines have already landed in Israel, and in the coming days they will be delivered to healthcare providers, and we'll be able to get started and administer them," Zarka was quoted as saying in the report.

He asserted that the vaccines are "very very much recommended"&nbsp;for those at-risk and for medical professionals, adding that they will also be made available to the general public.

Israel was one of the first nations to fully vaccinate its population. Some 4.5 million Israelis are already vaccinated with the third dose and about 800K&nbsp;lakh elderly and those at at-risk have been injected with a fourth dose. Over 4.5 million coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Israel since the start of the pandemic, with 11,667 recorded deaths.

The new vaccines, customised to the Omicron variant but interred to also hold up well to subsequent strains, have raised expectations and the scientific community is waiting to see their effectiveness as compared to the original vaccines.

"We are receiving the first update to vaccines after two years, which is exciting, but we are still missing data regarding the real-life effectiveness of the new shots,"&nbsp;leading immunologist professor Cyrille Cohen said.

Cohen, the head of Bar Ilan University's immunology lab, stressed that effectiveness, in this case, should not be judged by infection levels, but rather by cases of serious illness.

Based on the very limited research that exists, which mostly relies on mouse model studies and in-vitro observation, the immunologist expects gains in cutting infection to be "modest", but believes they "may well help to enhance protection against severe disease."

"For this reason, they are most important for vulnerable and old populations, people with comorbidities, or for the immunosuppressed,"&nbsp;Cohen was quoted as saying in the report.

Elaborating on the need to encourage taking new shots, the expert pointed out that research has shown that boosters give additional protection, albeit relatively short-lasting, and early studies indicate the updated shots are at least as effective as original vaccines.

"This means there is nothing to lose by taking new shots, and time may show there are notable benefits," he added.

Some indication about the vaccine's effectiveness can be studied within a few weeks by comparing the health of people who took updated shots and those who didn't, but it still won't provide a full answer on how much the new shots will help Israel through the winter,"&nbsp;the report said.

This is because nobody knows what variants could arise over the coming weeks.

"So far, it doesn't seem that new variants have appeared,"&nbsp;Cohen noted adding, "But this may change later in the fall and winter, so therefore, we can't predict what the effectiveness of the vaccines will be."

"The fact that we have access to updated vaccines, approved by regulators, is certainly good news for the most vulnerable with the coming of the winter," the immunologist stressed.

"But really, there is still some uncertainty as we don't know how well our defence systems will stand up until we know the nature of the attack, namely how many mutations the next variant has, where in the virus they occur, and how well the new vaccines can deal with them,"&nbsp;he said.

When long Covid is concerned, people have reported neurological symptoms, including difficulty thinking or concentrating. Headaches, sleep problems, dizziness, pins-and-needles feeling, loss of smell or taste and depression, etc some of the other reported symptoms.&nbsp;

Some of the symptoms can resemble other illnesses such as exhaustion, cognitive impairment, pain, fever and heart palpitations, etc.&nbsp;

A report by Reuters mentioned the case of Scott Taylor, who never got to move on from COVID-19. Taylor caught the disease in spring 2020.&nbsp;

As per the agency report, the 56-year-old still had not recovered about 18 months later when he killed himself at his home near Dallas, having lost his health, memory and money.&nbsp;

While telling the plight of millions of sufferers of long Covid, Taylor wrote in a final text to a friend, "No one cares. No one wants to take the time to listen."&nbsp;

"I can hardly do laundry without complete exhaustion, pain, fatigue, pain all up and down my spine. World spinning dizzily, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea. It seems I say stuff and have no idea of what I'm saying," Taylor added.&nbsp;

The case highlights the fact that suffering can drag a person to a place where he/she might even think about ending his/her life. Although, there is no authoritative data on the frequency of suicides among sufferers.&nbsp;

But several scientists from organisations including the US National Institutes of Health and Britain's data-collection agency are beginning to study a potential link between long Covid and suicides.&nbsp;

The experts are following evidence of increased cases of depression and suicidal thoughts among people with long Covid.&nbsp;

Leo Sher, a psychiatrist at Mount Sinai Health System in New York who studies mood disorders and suicidal behaviour, said, "I'm sure long COVID is associated with suicidal thoughts, with suicide attempts, with suicide plans and the risk of suicide death. We just don't have epidemiological data."&nbsp;

As per the Reuters report, Sher said pain disorders were a very strong predictor of suicide and inflammation in the brain also. Studies done so far, attempted to link such issues with long Covid. Sher said, "We should take this seriously."&nbsp;

An analysis for Reuters conducted by Seattle-based health data firm Truveta showed that patients with long Covid were nearly twice as likely to receive a first-time antidepressant prescription within 90 days of their initial Covid diagnosis compared with people diagnosed with Covid alone.&nbsp;

The vaccine, created by Tianjin-based CanSino Biologics, needs to be inhaled and it is expected to&nbsp;quickly become a favourite among a number of people who are not comfortable with needles and syringes.&nbsp;

According to a statement to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the vaccine called CanSino’s Ad5-nCoV has received approval from the China’s National Medical Products Administration. The news produced an instant movement in the market as the share prices of the company went up by around 14.5 per cent.&nbsp;

According to Bloomberg, the vaccine can be self-administered and that makes it quite lucrative for the healthcare sector as it will significantly reduce the personnel needed for the activity. It also starts working quickly as it directly stimulates antibodies in “nasal and airway tissues” to defend against Covid.&nbsp;

National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data show that the rate of deaths by suicide across India in that particular year increased to the highest level ever recorded. It rose 6.1 per cent from the previous year.&nbsp;

The NCRB data mentions that every year, more than 1,00,000 people commit suicide in the country. Although Covid could have been one of the causes, there are several other reasons for suicides like professional/career problems, sense of isolation, abuse, violence, family problems, mental disorders, addiction to alcohol, financial loss, chronic pain etc.&nbsp;

NCRB compiles the data, which is collected data on suicides from police recorded suicide cases.&nbsp;

The data says that a total of 1,64,033 suicides were reported in the country in 2021 showing an increase of 7.2% in comparison to 2020 and the rate of suicides has increased by 6.2% during 2021 over 2020.&nbsp;

As per the data, five states together accounted for 50.4% of the total suicides reported in the country. A majority of suicides were reported in Maharashtra (22,207) followed by 18,925 suicides in Tamil Nadu, 14,965 suicides in Madhya Pradesh, 13,500 suicides in West Bengal and 13,056 suicides in Karnataka accounting for 13.5%, 11.5%, 9.1%, 8.2% and 8.0% of total suicides respectively.&nbsp;

Delhi, the most-populous UT, has reported the highest number of suicides (2,840) among UTs, followed by Puducherry (504). A total of 25,891 suicides were reported in the 53 megacities of the country in 2021, the data shows.&nbsp;

India: NCRB data shows increase in deaths by suicide in 2021

The renowned biotechnology company Moderna said on Friday (August 26) that it is suing rival vaccine makers Pfizer and BioNTech. The American pharmaceutical company alleged that Pfizer and BioNTech infringed "patents central to (its) mRNA technology platform".&nbsp;

In a statement, Moderna said that it is suing the rival vaccine makers for patent infringement in the development of the first COVID-19 vaccine approved in the United States.&nbsp;

It alleged that they copied technology that Moderna had developed years before the pandemic.&nbsp;

The biotech firm said in a statement: "Moderna believes that Pfizer and BioNTech's Covid-19 vaccine Comirnaty infringes patents Moderna filed between 2010 and 2016 covering Moderna's foundational mRNA technology."&nbsp;

"This groundbreaking technology was critical to the development of Moderna's own mRNA Covid-19 vaccine, Spikevax. Pfizer and BioNTech copied this technology, without Moderna's permission, to make Comirnaty," Moderna added.

Moderna sues Pfizer and BioNTech for COVID-19 vaccine patent infringement

The US said on Thursday (August 26) that it will suspend 26 flights to China, operated by Chinese carriers. The measure has been taken in response to China's decision to suspend some US carriers over COVID-19 cases. The US decision will see suspension of flights by Xiamen, Air China, China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines. The suspension will be in effect from September 5 through September 28.

The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) cited the recent cancellation of 26 American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines flights over COVID-19 cases.

The suspensions include 19 flights from Los Angeles and 7 China Eastern flights from New York.

There was no immediate comment from the Chinese Embassy in Washington.

USDOT said as of Aug. 7 Chinese authorities revised their policies so if the number of passengers testing positive for COVID-19 reached 4% of the total number of passengers on a flight to China, one flight would be suspended and two flights if it reached 8%.

USDOT said the U.S. government has repeatedly raised objections with the government of China saying the rules place "undue culpability on carriers" when travelers test negative before boarding their flight from the United States only to "test positive for COVID-19 after their arrival in China."

China and the US have been at loggerheads over air services. In August 2021, US put limitation on four flights from &nbsp;Chinese carriers to 40% passenger capacity for four weeks. The step was taken after China imposed similar limits on four American carriers.

The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) cited the recent cancellation of 26 American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines flights over COVID-19 cases. The suspensions include 19 flights from Los Angeles and 7 China Eastern flights from New York. There was no immediate comment from the Chinese Embassy in Washington. USDOT said as of Aug. 7 Chinese authorities revised their policies so if the number of passengers testing positive for COVID-19 reached 4% of the total number of passengers on a flight to China, one flight would be suspended and two flights if it reached 8%. USDOT said the U.S. government has repeatedly raised objections with the government of China saying the rules place "undue culpability on carriers" when travelers test negative before boarding their flight from the United States only to "test positive for COVID-19 after their arrival in China." The Chinese company BioTeke claimed that the robot is capable of operating faster than conventional methods and according to a report on South China Morning Post, the robot can study 320 samples at the same time. &nbsp;

The robot was unveiled at the World Robot Conference 2022 in Beijing and although it looks like a vending machine, the robot impressed a number of people with its effectiveness. Till now, there were some robots which could collect samples, but this new innovation takes it one step forward.

“Researchers built models of human mouths and developed an image recognition algorithm for a high-accuracy mechanical arm. The arm is able to move autonomously and gently collect oral swab samples from a user’s throat,” he added while explaining the workings of the robot.

Moreover, to resurrect the fortunes of the failing housing market in China, the&nbsp;People’s Bank of China (PBOC) also cut the five-year LPR, a reference for mortgages by 15 basis points to 4.3 per cent.

It is pertinent to note that LPR forms the basis on which most new and outstanding loans are paid. The rate is decided by a group of 18 banks. For a long time, it has been considered the&nbsp;facto benchmark funding of China.&nbsp;
