Fears over the fourth coronavirus (COVID-19) wave are looming in India with a rise in cases, especially in some regions like New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana etc.

The country recently dropped several Covid-related restrictions and measures, but with an evident uptick in the number of cases, some rules have been re-imposed, such as mask mandate, etc.

A country that was impacted immensely during the second and third waves of Covid, is apprehensive about a possible fourth wave of the pandemic.

Amid concerns, India's renowned cardiac surgeon Dr Devi Prasad Shetty on Monday (April 25) said that there is no need to fear or have panic reactions. He also added that the concentration should be on the number of hospitalisations and not the positivity.

"Third wave was not that serious, so there is no need to fear or have panic reactions. We should only go by the number of patients admitted in hospital. One lakh people or 50,000 people getting positive does not mean anything," Shetty said.

While speaking to reporters he further said, "The whole country may be positive, but if there are no COVID patients in hospital, it doesn't make any difference. So concentration should be on the number of patients in the hospital, not the positivity."

Fourth COVID-19 wave in India? List of states where cases are rising

Amid a rise in coronavirus (COVID-19) cases and multiple outbreaks in China, authorities are imposing strict measures to curb the spread of the virus. However, the residents are furious over restrictions implemented by the authorities.

There is a fresh public outcry after reports mentioned that Shanghai authorities have erected fences outside residential buildings.

News agency Reuters reported that images of workers in hazmat suits were circulated. The workers were seen sealing entrances of housing blocks.

They were also closing off entire streets with green fencing which was roughly two metres tall. The images went viral on social media, causing panic and prompting questions and complaints from residents.

One of the users on Weibo, which is a Twitter-like social media platform, said: "This is so disrespectful of the rights of the people inside, using metal barriers to enclose them like domestic animals."

In a video, residents were seen shouting from balconies at workers trying to set up fencing. In other viral videos, people were seen trying to pull fences down.

Another Weibo user asked: "Isn't this a fire hazard?"

The news agency report mentioned that most of the fences were erected around compounds designated "sealed areas". Those are the buildings where at least one person tested positive for COVID-19.

However, there is no official statement on fencing and sealing residential buildings or why authorities resort to such extreme measures.

A notice dated Saturday from one local authority shared online said it was imposing a "hard quarantine" in some areas.

What living with COVID-19 virus looks like? Experts answer

China has been experiencing a huge surge in COVID-19 cases for quite some time now and the restrictions placed by the authorities are not making life easy for the citizens.

Earlier, Shanghai went through a tough lockdown and on Monday, Beijing saw a lot of panic buying in the supermarkets as the start of mass testing sparked rumours of a similar lockdown.

Chaoyang, the biggest district of Beijing, became the first place to undergo mass testing as around 3.5 million citizens were asked to report for three COVID-19 tests in a week. The decision was taken after the area accounted for more than half of Beijing’s asymptomatic cases since Friday.

Rio de Janeiro's carnival, a glittering, sequin-studded festival of the flesh, exploded back to life Friday with the first famed samba school parades since Covid-19 started devastating Brazil.

After two long years, a flood of dancers and drummers reclaimed the iconic beach city's "Sambadrome," its dedicated carnival parade venue, which had been turned into a drive-through vaccination center at the height of the health crisis.

The all-night parades by the city's top samba schools Friday and Saturday nights are the first since February 2020, marking a turning point for hard-hit Brazil, where Covid-19 has claimed more than 660,000 lives, second only to the United States.

"I'm just so happy. I think a lot of people are going to cry when the parades start, including me," said Ana Vieira, a 48-year-old geography teacher, who was dressed in a giant, sparkling white costume awaiting her turn to parade for the Imperatriz samba school.

"Carnival is life. You can see the happiness on people's faces after two long years staying home and missing it," Vieira, who has been parading for 20 years, told AFP.

But the festivities took a tragic turn before they began, when an 11-year-old girl died after being injured in a horrific float accident during a lower-level samba school parade contest Wednesday night, a preview of the main event.

She was rushed to the hospital, but died Friday of her wounds, city officials said.

The tragedy also struck Rio's carnival in 2017, when two freak float accidents killed one person and injured dozens.

- 'Couldn't sleep' -

There were fears the carnival party would be axed again in 2022, after Rio authorities canceled it last year, then postponed it by two months this year from the traditional dates -- just before the Catholic season of Lent -- over fears of the omicron variant.

But with more than 75 percent of the South American country's 213 million people now fully vaccinated, the average weekly Covid-19 death toll has plunged from more than 3,000 a year ago to around 100 now -- allowing the show to go on.

All participants and the 75,000 attendees expected each night are required to present proof of vaccination.

City officials have not authorized the massive carnival street parties known as "blocos," but several smaller ones are still being held.

The pandemic left Brazilians full of "saudades" -- Portuguese for "longing" -- for carnival, a free-for-all of dancing, singing and partying at close quarters that is essentially the opposite of social distancing.

Bhushan wrote, "These are few states which are reporting a higher contribution to India's caseload and a higher positivity rate."

"The Centre advised all states and UTs to follow a risk assessment based approach on the opening of economic and social activities without losing the gains made so far in the fight against the pandemic," he added.

Covid in India: Lockdowns and restrictions? Take pre-emptive action if required, Centre writes to these states

India's Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday (April 19) released daily coronavirus (COVID-19) data that was recorded in the last 24 hours.

The data shows a steep decline in Covid cases as it recorded 1,247 infections in the past 24 hours as compared to 2,183 on Monday.

The sudden jump in cases on Monday caused panic among locals as many thought that the fourth Covid wave in the country is likely.

However, an expert has weighed in on the same as he refuted the claims. Manindra Agrawal, who is a professor at IIT Kanpur said that the fourth wave of Covid is unlikely.

As quoted by an India-based media outlet India Today, Agrawal explained that there are no new mutants that have come to the notice of the officials.

Agrawal's mathematical model related to various coronavirus trends in the country had been used as a reference to study and analyse Covid activity.

While speaking to the media outlet, Agrawal said that the chances of the fourth wave in India are lesser as the natural immunity against coronavirus among the people is above ninety per cent.

COVID-19 in India: Expert weighs in on reports of fourth wave

COVID-19 has gripped the world for the last two years. It has caused immense pain in the form of deaths, job losses, etc.

A patient in the UK seems to have suffered the worst due to this disease as the person has been fighting it for around 505 days.

Well, it is absolutely true.

The patient had a severely weakened immune system, media reports said citing scientists.

At 505 days, "it certainly seems to be the longest reported infection," said Dr Luke Blagdon Snell, an infectious disease expert, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust told AP.

Suffering from Covid for a year-and-a-half, the case seems to have caught the attention of several people. It also shows how important it is to protect vulnerable people from the coronavirus.

The persistent COVID-19 is rare. It is also different from the long Covid.

"In long Covid, it's generally assumed the virus has been cleared from your body but the symptoms persist. With persistent infection, it represents ongoing, active replication of the virus," Snell said.

In Portugal this weekend, team plans to present many such Covid cases at a meeting.

The researchers investigated whether mutations arise or variants evolve in people with long infections.

The study involved nine patients. They tested positive for the virus for around eight weeks. All of the patients had weakened immune systems and had a history of HIV, cancer, organ transplants, etc issues.

Repeated tests were done. When patients were tested, the researchers also analysed the genetic code of the virus. It was done to make sure it was the same strain or not. People didn't get Covid more than once too. The genetic sequencing showed that the virus evolved and mutated.

Delhi Capitals (DC)'s camp has been hit by as many as six COVID-19 cases amid the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 edition. After Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh and four other members of the DC support staff tested positive for the virus earlier this week, another player returned positive in the latest round of tests conducted on Wednesday (April 20).

As per a report in PTI, New Zealand wicket-keeper batter Tim Seifert is the latest member of the DC squad to test positive for the virus. However, despite six COVID-19 cases being detected in the DC camp, their game against Punjab Kings (PBKS) is currently underway as per schedule at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.

The match was earlier shifted from MCA Stadium in Pune to Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai following the emergence of five COVID-19 cases in the DC camp. The six positive members have been placed in quarantine and will be allowed to join the squad once they have recovered fully. DC, meanwhile, can continue to focus on getting their campaign back on track after a shaky start to the season.

While DC have not yet faced a full-fledged outbreak of COVID-19 among their squad with only two players affected at the moment, what do the BCCI rules state if a team is adversely affected by the virus? Can a particular team's match be rescheduled in case of a COVID-19 outbreak in their squad?

As per BCCI's guidelines, a team can continue to take part in a fixture if they have at least 12 fit players available to take the field. Seven out of these 12 players should be Indian as a maximum of only 4 overseas players can be part of the playing XI. In case the franchise is not able to field 12 players, the IPL Technical Committee reserves the right to reschedule the game.

"Unable to field a team on account of Covid for any match due to having less than 12 players available in the playing XI (of which at least seven must be Indian) plus one substitute fielder. The BCCI, at its discretion, will attempt to reschedule the match for later in the season. If this is not possible, the issue will be referred to the IPL Technical Committee. The decision of the Technical Committee will be final and binding," the BCCI's rule state.

IPL 2021 had to be suspended midway last year due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the camps of several teams. The tournament was later moved to UAE from India and completed there. This year, the BCCI is conducting the entire league stage of IPL 2022 across four venues in Maharashtra to ensure minimal COVID-19 risk.

Playing only in one state means teams are avoiding air travel and are travelling by road for their matches. However, despite the precautions and the strict bio-bubbles, COVID-19 has managed to once again rock the ongoing season and continues to pose a threat to the tournament.

IPL 2022: DC's game vs PBKS to go ahead despite COVID-19 scare, RR clash shifted from Pune to Mumbai

Delhi Capitals (DC)'s clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Wednesday (April 20) is now in doubt after another DC player reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 hours before the start of the game. The number of cases in the DC camp has now reached six as COVID-19 has once again come back to pose a threat to the ongoing 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Delhi Capitals' all-rounder Mitchell Marsh was the first player in the squad to test positive for the virus. The franchise also confirmed four members of the support staff had also tested positive. While the others had returned negative results in the latest round of tests conducted on Tuesday, another overseas player tested positive on Wednesday.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, the overseas player tested positive after a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) on Wednesday. The players are being tested again as the game between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings now hangs in balance. Earlier, the game was shifted from the MCA Stadium in Pune to Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai after five cases were detected in DC's camp.

Punjab Kings have already left for the Brabourne Stadium while it is not known if the Delhi Capitals squad will be allowed to travel after the positive case. As per BCCI's guidelines, a team can play even with a minimal squad but the game is most likely to be rescheduled to a later date given the risk involved.

From Manila to Beijing, tributes poured in for him. Media reports stated that he died in a Covid quarantine hotel in the eastern Chinese province of Anhui.

Philippine ambassador to China dies during COVID-19 quarantine, tributes pour in

As the smell of cinnamon rolls and suntan lotion wafted through the spring air at Disneyland on Monday morning, Rory Sutherland flung herself on the sidewalk and had what can only be described as a hissy fit.

She was ready for a hug from Mickey Mouse — in fact, beyond ready: For more than two years, ever since the pandemic began, Disneyland’s furry inhabitants have been off limits. The park was closed for 14 months. When it reopened in April 2021 with extensive health-related modifications, Mickey and Minnie and their cohorts were kept at a distance from guests. No hugs. No autographs. No secrets whispered in little ears. Only waving from afar, which bummed out some families so much that they canceled or postponed their trips.

But on Monday, Rory, 2, trained her eyes on someone coming around the corner in red trousers and big, white gloves. Squeal-screaming, she picked herself up off the pavement and ran toward him with arms outstretched. Her mother, father and uncle chased after her and scrambled to unlock their iPhones to catch a photo of their embrace.

That’s right: Hugs are back.

“Cheese! Cheese!” Rory shouted toward her paparazzi, as Mickey knelt and started to rub noses with her. Rory’s mother, Alyssa Sutherland, wiped away a tear. “We’ve been waiting and waiting for the character interactions to come back,” Sutherland said, noting that the family had traveled to Southern California from Lethbridge, Canada.

Mickey was himself undoubtedly in need of a hug. In addition to the lingering effects of the pandemic, Disney has been roiled over the past month by the culture wars. Employees revolted over the company’s initial silence on an anti-LGBTQ law, and right-wing protests broke out after the company did speak up. In this hyperpartisan moment, both sides of the political divide have been pulling on Disney, leading to some not-so-magical moments around a brand that is supposed to symbolize happily ever after.

“Hugs for everyone!” one Disney employee shouted when Mickey arrived.

Some people find Disney’s extra-syrupy, tightly managed theme parks to be, well, extra-creepy. The character hugging, which has been part of the Disneyland experience since its earliest days in the 1950s, may seem particularly odd. Grown men waiting in line for the chance to squeeze a life-size Donald Duck? (Yes, adults are eligible, with or without children.)

A few videos of inappropriate behavior — by guests — have gone viral, as with a moment from 2015, when a young woman groped the muscled chest of a performer playing Gaston from “Beauty and the Beast.” (He sent her away. “You’re done,” he said, shaking his head. “There’s children.”)

In some instances, coming face-to-face with Cinderella or Winnie the Pooh or Aladdin is sensory overload. “I loved Mickey Mouse, but when I met the actual real-life Mickey, or rather, his impersonator, and he tried to hug me in his warm, fuzzy suit, I recoiled in fear,” actress-producer Mindy Kaling wrote in her 2011 memoir.

But a lot of American families consider it a rite of childhood to hug one of Disney’s cartoon characters. Disney theme parks around the world attracted an estimated 151 million visitors in 2019, according to the Themed Entertainment Association, which has not yet released figures for 2021.

“It’s part of what makes Disney so special,” said Bri Petrarca, who had brought her sons, Grayson, 5, and Asher, 2, to meet characters on Monday. She was wearing a pink T-shirt emblazoned with the words, “Here for the hugs.”

About 50 people were waiting at that moment to hug Minnie Mouse, who had appeared in her polka dots near the Main Street USA magic shop. Three women in their 20s, each wearing mouse-ear headbands, waited their turn; one of them, Natalie Parks, from Salt Lake City, said hugging Minnie was “a chance to reconnect with my childhood.”

TikTok, Instagram and the ubiquity of camera phones have made such interactions more sought out than ever, according to Robyn Vossen, Disneyland’s general manager of entertainment operations. In some instances, characters appear without notice (always with a handler to run interference). Some characters, including the Disney princesses, are so mobbed that the company has built indoor, heavily themed environments for them to inhabit. Walt Disney World in Florida even offers front-of-the-line reservations.

“Fur characters” (those in full-body suits) do not speak and appear only for about 30 minutes at a time, largely because it can be exhausting for the performer, especially in summer heat. “Face characters,” like the princesses, do not wear masks so they can chat with guests. Disneyland has roughly 50 costumed characters in rotation, Vossen said.

With the return of character hugs, operations have been almost fully restored at Disney’s domestic resorts after a lengthy period in which social distancing and other coronavirus safety measures took priority. The company dropped most face-covering requirements in February. Disneyland’s Main Street Electrical Parade is set to return Friday.

Disney needs this summer to be a blockbuster: The division of the company that includes theme parks had $16.6 billion in revenue last year, down from $26 billion in 2019, according to financial filings.

“Character interactions are such a big deal because they provide an emotional touch point,” Vossen said. “That personal, one-on-one interaction may be the most powerful offering that The Walt Disney Co. has.”

With that, Mickey Mouse headed “offstage,” as Disney refers to its behind-the-scenes areas. “Time for a bathroom break,” one employee said.

Vossen, who has worked at Disneyland for 42 years, frowned and offered a correction. “Or to grab a quick piece of cheese,” she said.

As the smell of cinnamon rolls and suntan lotion wafted through the spring air at Disneyland on Monday morning, Rory Sutherland flung herself on the sidewalk and had what can only be described as a hissy fit.
