The first round of voting is just two weeks away in France. Another key player Eric Zemmour came into the picture of France elections. France is on the decline according to him, this is because of three main factors - minimum governmental interference, unchecked immigration, and the rise of Islam in the country.

Coronavirus has been tormenting the whole world for last two years. The number of cases is still rising in some countries. Ever wondered how does it actually infects humans? Well, now we have an answer to this riddle. &nbsp;

A tiny virus-laden droplet can infect someone with COVID-19, said a study. &nbsp;

The findings of the research, where volunteers were deliberately infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has been published in the journal ‘Nature Medicine’ on Thursday. This is the world's first human challenge study.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Challenge studies involve intentionally giving someone a virus to study its effects on the human body. It is risky but hugely valuable to understand the course of an infection. &nbsp;&nbsp;

"Really, there's no other type of study where you can do that, because normally, patients only come to your attention if they have developed symptoms, and so you miss all of those preceding days when the infection is brewing," said Dr Christopher Chiu, an infectious disease physician and immunologist at Imperial College London and the lead author of the study. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The study, which began in March 2021, had volunteers aged between 18 and 30. The volunteers were infected with the originally detected strain of the virus. &nbsp;

They were monitored medically for 24 hours a day. They also stayed at London's Royal Free Hospital for two weeks.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A total of 18 participants became infected. Two never developed symptoms. Around 83% study participants, who got infected, lost sense of smell. &nbsp;

How does COVID-19 actually infect humans? World's first human challenge study reveals

Coronavirus infections in Asia passed 100 million on Wednesday, according to a Reuters tally, as the region records a resurgence in cases, dominated by the BA.2 Omicron sub-variant.

The region is reporting over 1 million new COVID-19 cases about every two days, according to a Reuters analysis. With more than half of the world's population, Asia contributes 21% of all reported COVID-19 cases.

The highly contagious but less deadly BA.2 sub-variant of Omicron has pushed the figures to greater highs in recent weeks in countries such as South Korea, China and Vietnam. BA.2 now represents nearly 86% of all sequenced cases, according to the World Health Organization.

South Korea leads the world in the daily average number of new cases reported, accounting for one in every four infections reported globally each day, as per Reuters analysis.

While the number of cases has levelled off since earlier in March, the country is still reporting over 300 deaths on average each day, with authorities ordering crematoriums nationwide to operate longer.

China is trying to tame its worst outbreak since the pandemic began. The rise in COVID cases in Shanghai, fuelled by the BA.2 substrain, has prompted the financial hub to go into lockdown. The city moved into a two-staged lockdown of its 26 million residents on Monday, restricting movement through bridges and highways to contain the spread.

China has reported over 45,000 new cases since the start of this year, a figure higher than it reported in all of 2021. Even though China has inoculated 90% of its population, not enough elderly people have received booster doses, making them susceptible to reinfections.

Though China is sticking to its plan for crushing the outbreak, experts overseas remain sceptical about the efficacy of lockdowns in the face of the highly infectious Omicron variant.

"It is clear from Australia and elsewhere in the world that lockdowns are simply not effective against Omicron so expect a big wave coming," said Adrian Esterman, an expert in biostatistics at the University of South Australia.

India alone accounts for 43 million COVID cases, more than the total in the next three worst-hit Asian countries of Japan, South Korea and Vietnam.

India has reported fewer than 2,000 cases per day for the past 11 days versus its peak this year in January of over 300,000 cases on average per day.

Earlier in March, Asia passed 1 million COVID-related deaths. There have now been 1,027,586 million COVID-related deaths across the continent.

Vaccines are considered less effective against the BA.2 subvariant compared to its predecessors. Studies have shown Omicron can reinfect people previously diagnosed with different coronavirus variants.

Over 100 million Covid cases in Asia, 1 million every 2 days

After a month of decline, COVID-19 cases began to rise around the world last week, with lockdowns in Asia and China struggling to contain an outbreak.

In March, the BA.2 variant of the more infectious Omicron was thought to be rapidly spreading in portions of Europe and China.

This month has seen an increase in COVID-19 cases in France, Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

In Asia, the situation in Hong Kong, the financial capital, appears to be stabilising.

Shanghai is the latest hotspot on mainland China, with numbers hovering around 4,400.

Some businesses in the United States, where warnings have already been given about an impending rise, are gearing up for back-to-work mode.

Shanghai expanded its shut downs to some western sections of the city earlier than planned on Wednesday (March 30), citing a total of 5,982 additional local cases.

Shanghai, which has a population of 26 million people, is on its third day of a lockdown imposed by officials who have divided the city approximately along the Huangpu River, separating the historic centre from the eastern financial and industrial sector of Pudong to allow for staggered testing.&nbsp;

On March 29, the city reported a new high of 5,656 asymptomatic COVID-19 cases and 326 symptomatic cases, up from 4,381 new asymptomatic cases and 96 new symptomatic cases the day before.&nbsp;

The topic "Pudong pandemic" was one of the top trending items on the Chinese Weibo social media platform. A widely shared video showed a robotic dog with a loudhailer strapped on to its back walking around the empty streets of a housing compound, reminding residents to take necessary precautions.

What is the BA.2 variant? &nbsp;

Amid the surge in Omicron cases, British health officials had earlier detected growing cases of BA.2 variant. In total, Omicron has three sub-strains: BA.1, BA.2 and BA.3.

As it is slightly harder to track, BA.2 is also called the "stealth variant". Due to a missing gene, BA.1 is tracked through a common PCR test by default due to a missing gene. While BA.2 and another sibling, BA.3 can be found only by genomic sequencing. &nbsp;&nbsp;

According to the World Health Organization, BA.2 now represents around 86% of all sequenced cases. It is more transmissible than other sub-variants, like BA.1 and BA.1.1. But the evidence so far suggests that it is less likely to cause a severe infection. &nbsp;

A new study found that the various symptoms connected to long COVID-19 could be different in people, who have been infected with different variants of the deadly virus.

A new study found that the various symptoms connected to long COVID-19 could be different in people, who have been infected with different variants of the deadly virus. The study, based on long Covid and all the symptoms associated with it, will be presented at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (ECCMID 2022) in Lisbon next month. As per the study, estimates have suggested that over half of survivors of SARS-CoV-2 infection experience post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC), more commonly known as 'long COVID'. From old to young, otherwise healthy to those with underlying conditions, the study mentioned that the condition can affect anyone. But despite an increasing body of literature, long COVID remains poorly understood. Italian researchers did an observational study of 428 patients (254 (59%) men and 174 (41%) women) treated at the Careggi University Hospital's post-COVID outpatient service between June 2020 and June 2021. It was time when the original form of SARS-CoV-2 and the Alpha variant were circulating in the population. The researchers have suggested that individuals who were infected with the alpha variant of the virus displayed, an early release from the ECCMID regarding the study. As per the research, individuals who were infected with the alpha variant of the virus displayed different emotional and neurological symptoms. ALSO READ | Study shows several bird species nesting and laying eggs almost a month early On the other hand, those who were infected with the original form of SARS-CoV-2 showed different symptoms. The study revealed that at least three-quarters 325/428 (76%) of patients reported at least one persistent symptom. The most common reported symptoms were shortness of breath and chronic fatigue followed by sleep problems, visual problems and brain fog. The study performed a more detailed evaluation and compared the symptoms reported by patients infected between March and December 2020 (when the original SARS-COV-2 was dominant) with those reported by patients infected between January and April 2021 (when Alpha was the dominant variant). The researchers found a substantial change in the pattern of neurological and cognitive/emotional problems. The study has been led by Dr Michele Spinicci and colleagues from the University of Florence and Careggi University Hospital in Italy. Dr Spinicci said, "Many of the symptoms reported in this study have been measured, but this is the first time they have been linked to different COVID-19 variants." "The long duration and broad range of symptoms reminds us that the problem is not going away, and we need to do more to support and protect these patients in the long term. Future research should focus on the potential impacts of variants of concern and vaccination status on ongoing symptoms," Dr Spinicci added. China, a country where the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak was first reported in 2019, is facing a surge in cases again as now the nation has reported two deaths on Saturday (March 19), its first in more than a year. The deaths have been reported in mainland China since January 2021.&nbsp;

After its outbreak, the deadly virus spread worldwide, killing millions of people. The recent trend underlines a similar threat posed by an Omicron outbreak that has triggered the country's highest case counts since the first Covid case was reported.&nbsp;

China's National Health Commission said both deaths occurred in Jilin, the northeastern province which has been hardest-hit by a nationwide rise in cases. The surge in Covid cases has led to strict measures, mass testing, lockdowns in several cities.&nbsp;

China reports first COVID-19 deaths in more than a year

A new COVID-19 variant was first found in Israel and now, it has spread to several other countries including Cambodia, India, Thailand, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. Although the variant is spreading quite quickly, experts said that there is no need to worry as it is not considered lethal.<o:p></o:p>

Here’s everything we know about the new BA2.2 COVID-19 variant -<o:p></o:p>

The new variant is the combination of two Omicron sub-variants namely BA.1 and BA.2 and although it is being studied all around the world, Hong Kong scientists are currently calling it BA2.2.

The Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data is trying to obtain more data in order to understand the strain better. Two COVID strains combining into a new variant is a common phenomenon, Israel’s Chief COVID Officer Salman Zarka said, adding that when there are two viruses in the same cell and it multiplies, “they exchange genetic material, creating a new virus.”<o:p></o:p>

What is the origin of the new variant?<o:p></o:p>

The variant was first found in Israel when two returning passengers tested positive at the Ben Gurion airport. Since then, the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) reported three cases in Maharashtra, Puducherry and Ladakh. Similar cases were found in Cambodia, Thailand and Hong Kong while there were unconfirmed reports of the BA2.2 variant finding its way to United Kingdom. <o:p></o:p>

“It’s likely that they [the arriving passengers who tested positive] were infected before boarding the flight in Israel. The variant could have emerged here. We don’t know what it means yet,” Israeli Health Ministry Director-General Nachman Ash said in an interview with Israel’s Army Radio.<o:p></o:p>

However, Hong Kong researchers believe that the outbreak came from their country and The Centre for Medical Genomics at Mahidol University claimed the same in their Facebook post.<o:p></o:p>

What are the symptoms of the infection?<o:p></o:p>

The reported symptoms till now are mild symptoms of fever, headache and muscle dystrophy.

Everything we know about new COVID-19 variant found in multiple countries

The Israeli health ministry has said that they have found two people who were apparently carrying a coronavirus (COVID-19) strain that combined the original Omicron and the so-called "stealth" BA.2 variant.&nbsp;

A report published by The Times Of Israel on Wednesday (March 16) quoted the ministry as saying that "this strain has not yet been seen in the world".

The ministry further noted that the cases were found "in recent days" while testing international arriving travellers at Ben Gurion Airport.&nbsp;

The ministry further states that the two cases have not required special medical care as they are suffering mild symptoms.&nbsp;

Early research suggests "stealth omicron," or the B.A.2 lineage of the omicron variant spreads faster than the original omicron, which itself spread faster than the original virus and other variants.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Pfizer and BioNTech announced Tuesday (March 15) they had formally asked the United States drug regulator for emergency approval of a second booster shot of their Covid vaccine for people aged 65 and older.

The companies said in a press statement that their request is based on two Israeli studies that show "an additional mRNA booster increases immunogenicity and lowers rates of confirmed infections and severe illness."&nbsp;

Leaving a few countries like China, most countries' case levels have significantly declined from record levels during the Omicron wave.&nbsp;

The first Israeli study cited by Pfizer and BioNTech showed that "rates of confirmed infections were 2 times lower and rates of severe illness were 4 times lower among individuals who received an additional booster dose," compared to those who only had one.

The second study - an analysis of Israeli healthcare workers 18 years and older - showed that antibody levels in those who received a second booster were significantly higher than those who did not.

South Korea reported more than 400,000 COVID-19 cases – the highest daily figure since the start of the pandemic – on Wednesday. The latest wave of infections is fueled by the Omicron variant but the government believes that they are nearing the peak of&nbsp;the ongoing Omicron wave. <o:p></o:p>

India has expanded its covid-19 vaccination coverage and started inoculating children between the age of 12 and 14 years. The vaccine to be administered to this age group would be Corbevax.

India begins vaccination for 12-14 age group, Booster shots for all above 60

In India, the Jammu and Kashmir government today kickstarted the vaccination drive for children between the age group of 12-14 years.&nbsp;

The government said 360, 000 children are to be vaccinated in the Kashmir Valley. The government has planned to vaccinate around 35,000 children in 10 districts of Kashmir every day.&nbsp;

The schools have been shut across the valley since the beginning of the Covid pandemic. The education sector was among the worst hit and one of the reasons for students to come to the vaccination booth today was to keep safe from covid so that they don't have to miss school again. The students were hopeful that all the children will get vaccinated, and schools will start running normally after it.&nbsp;

Vaccination is very important for all of us. If we want to get rid of covid, we need to take the shot. I would request every student as well as their parents to get this vaccine. It's to make sure that our school life goes on normally and it is not affected in future. I am very happy I got my first shot today,'' said Shazia, a student.&nbsp;

The health department has made arrangements across the valley to vaccinate children in every area. Teams have been deputed at various remote areas as well. The department plans to vaccinate all the children in the said age group within a span of three weeks. Around 1534 vaccination centres have been put in place.&nbsp;

"We have started the vaccination drive for children in the age group of 12-14 years for the Kashmir region. We have got a great response. Our target is 3.36 lac vaccinations for the Kashmir region, and we have kept vaccines available at all districts. The second dose of the vaccine must be administered after the 28th day of the first dose. Administration has done a commendable job during the pandemic, and we will keep at it. In India, the Jammu and Kashmir government today kickstarted the vaccination drive for children between the age group of 12-14 years. The government said 360, 000 children are to be vaccinated in the Kashmir Valley. The government has planned to vaccinate around 35,000 children in 10 districts of Kashmir every day. The schools have been shut across the valley since the beginning of the Covid pandemic. The education sector was among the worst hit and one of the reasons for students to come to the vaccination booth today was to keep safe from covid so that they don't have to miss school again. The students were hopeful that all the children will get vaccinated, and schools will start running normally after it. Vaccination is very important for all of us. If we want to get rid of covid, we need to take the shot. I would request every student as well as their parents to get this vaccine. It's to make sure that our school life goes on normally and it is not affected in future. I am very happy I got my first shot today,'' said Shazia, a student. The health department has made arrangements across the valley to vaccinate children in every area. Teams have been deputed at various remote areas as well. The department plans to vaccinate all the children in the said age group within a span of three weeks. Around 1534 vaccination centres have been put in place. "We have started the vaccination drive for children in the age group of 12-14 years for the Kashmir region. We have got a great response. Our target is 3.36 lac vaccinations for the Kashmir region, and we have kept vaccines available at all districts. The second dose of the vaccine must be administered after the 28th day of the first dose. Administration has done a commendable job during the pandemic, and we will keep at it. We just request the people to follow covid SOPs," said Director Health Kashmir, Dr Mushtaq Ahmad. The vaccination drives in Jammu and Kashmir have been among the top across India. In China, the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak was first reported in 2019 and subsequently spread worldwide. The country is again witnessing a surge in cases as the nation has reported more local symptomatic Covid cases so far this year than it recorded in all of 2021.&nbsp;

The rise in cases triggered by the outbreaks in Shanghai to Shenzhen could be due to the fast-spreading variant commonly known as "stealth omicron".&nbsp;

The country's National Health Commission (NHC) said on Monday that Mainland China reported 1,337 new domestically transmitted Covid cases with confirmed symptoms on March 13.&nbsp;

As per the Reuters report, the total this year so far is more than 9,000 and in 2021, the total number of cases was 8,378.&nbsp;

New cases have been reported in the past few weeks in Beijing and Shanghai, as well as in the provinces of Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shandong and Zhejiang along the coast.&nbsp;

An increase in cases in one country leads to a rise in the number of Covid infections in other parts of the world. But the question here is, should the world be wary?&nbsp;

It is important to note that the number of infections is small compared with caseloads elsewhere in the world. However, the surge has activated China's dynamic zero Covid policy.&nbsp;

As per the nation's zero Covid policy, infections are supposed to be quickly identified and eventually contained. It appears that the country is looking forward to taking some strict measures.&nbsp;

In the latest development, Shanghai has closed schools, parks, cinemas and suspended some long-distance travel amid a resurgence of cases across the financial hub.&nbsp;

On Friday (March 11), the Shanghai authorities announced the closure of all schools except some university-level classes from Monday. Long-distance intercity bus services were also suspended on Monday.&nbsp;

As quoted by Reuters, a 34-year-old Shanghai resident Loyd Ge said residents&nbsp;weren't panicking but were preparing for a complete lockdown.&nbsp;

Ge said, "The long-distance bus station has been closed. A (COVID-19) nucleic acid test is required when travelling to other provinces."

"With these counter-measures, we’ve still run into a new outbreak in Shanghai, which shows that the control measures will be further strengthened. So we should be prepared for a city-wide lockdown as well," the resident added.&nbsp;

Zhang wrote on Monday, "But if our country opens up quickly now, it will cause a large number of infections in people in a short period of time."&nbsp;

"No matter how low the death rate is, it will still cause a run on medical resources and a short term shock to social life, causing irreparable harm to families and society,"&nbsp;Zhang added.&nbsp;

China sees multiple COVID-19 outbreaks driven by 'stealth omicron'. Should the world be wary?

World number two Novak&nbsp;Djokovic&nbsp;has withdrawn from the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, the tournament announced on Wednesday, in the latest setback for the player due to his refusal to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

The Serb had been automatically listed in the draw for the tournament but said he knew it was unlikely that he would be able to gain entry into the United States.

"The (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has confirmed that regulations won't be changing so I won't be able to play in the US,"&nbsp;Djokovic&nbsp;said in a tweet.

"Good luck to those playing in these great tournaments," he said, referring also to the Miami Open, which begins later this month.

Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov will move into&nbsp;Djokovic's space in the draw ahead of the start of the first round of the Masters 1000 tournament on Thursday.

Djokovic&nbsp;was unable to compete at the Australian Open after immigration authorities detained him on Jan. 6, prompting a legal rollercoaster ride over the country's COVID-19 entry rules that led to the cancellation of his visa later that month.

Rafa Nadal went on to win the tournament and with it a men's record 21st Grand Slam title, one more than&nbsp;Djokovic&nbsp;and Roger Federer.

Djokovic&nbsp;most recently competed in Dubai in February, where Czech Jiri Vesely upset him in the quarter-finals.

The loss meant he would lose his world number one ranking to Russian Daniil Medvedev, who claimed his maiden major title in Flushing Meadows in September and is the top seed at Indian Wells.

France loosened COVID-19 restrictions this month, with vaccine passports no longer mandatory as of March 14, opening the door for the 34-year-old&nbsp;Djokovic&nbsp;to defend his French Open title starting in May.

Some 44 million South Koreans headed to polls to elect their next president on Wednesday after a campaign marked by surprises, scandals and smears.

The winner will face mounting challenges including handling South Korea`s worst wave of COVID-19 infections, deepening inequality and surging housing prices that have strained Asia`s fourth-largest economy, and the ever-present threat of North Korea.

Voters are looking for a leader who can root out corruption, heal the divided nation and polarised politics, and initiate negotiations that succeed in curbing North Korea`s nuclear ambitions.

Fourteen candidates registered to run but the focus is on a tight two-way race between Lee Jae-myung, the standard-bearer of the ruling Democratic Party, and Yoon Suk-yeol, from the conservative main opposition People Power Party.

They are vying to succeed incumbent President Moon Jae-in, who is constitutionally barred from seeking re-election. The winner will begin his single, five-year term on May 10.

Polls last week showed a slight edge for Yoon, who secured a surprise, last-minute boost when a fellow conservative running a distant third dropped out and threw Yoon his support.

A survey by Embrain Public estimated the merger could give Yoon 47.4% to Lee`s 41.5%, while an Ipsos poll tipped the margin with Ahn at a slightly wider 48.9% to 41.9% for Yoon.

In the absence of opinion polls over the past six days, Yoon`s camp said on Monday it expected to win with a 10% margin, while Lee`s team predicted it would come out on top by 1-2%.

SWING VOTERS

A former prosecutor general, Yoon has vowed to fight corruption, foster justice and create a more level playing field, while seeking a harder line toward North Korea and a "reset" with China.

Lee was governor of the most populous province of Gyeonggi and shot to fame with his aggressive coronavirus responses and advocacy for universal basic income.

Both candidates` disapproval ratings matched their popularity as scandals, mud-slinging and gaffes dominated what was dubbed the "unlikeable election".

Young voters who backed Moon but became disillusioned with economic problems and corruption scandals are seen as a key bank of support.

Lee Sung-jin, 33, said he was casting his ballot at a polling station in Seoul because he had heard that the turnout among people in their 20s and 30s would be important.

"As the current problems for young people concerning employment and housing prices are serious, I voted for a candidate who made a pledge to come up with solutions," he said, without specifying who he voted for.

VOTING WITH COVID-19

South Korea reported a record daily high 342,446 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday but the surge has hardly registered as an election issue, beyond some debate over how to compensate citizens and businesses.

With more than 1 million COVID patients treating themselves at home, election authorities tightened voting procedures for patients on Monday amid uproar over early voting irregularities over the weekend.

During Saturday`s special early voting for infected voters, some election workers collected ballots in shopping bags or plastic buckets to place in ballot boxes, and some voters reported receiving papers that had already been used.

Officials said there was no evidence of foul play but the chaos threatened to tarnish South Korea 35-year democratic history of tight and relatively transparent elections, and a mostly successful fight against COVID-19.

The race has already faced a number of disruptions.

In a rare incident of violence in a South Korean election, a man with a hammer assaulted the leader of the Democrat Party and slightly injured him on Monday while he was campaigning for Lee.

Western Australia on Thursday (March 3) became the last state in the country to lift border restrictions as the nation is now fully open to vaccinated travellers.&nbsp;

Western Australia had one of the world's longest border closures due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as it was closed for almost 700 days and was cut off from the rest of the country and the world.&nbsp;

Perth's airport was the scene of emotional reunions as the first of a scheduled 22 domestic flights and five international flights began arriving on Thursday.

The president of the Australian Medical Association (Western Australia) Dr Mark Duncan-Smith told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. that such a tough border strategy might have worked.&nbsp;

He said, "What is happening here in WA [Western Australia] right now, with omicron at 1,000 cases a day, is a social experiment that has never been done in the world, and so what we are hoping for is that we will get a very, very soft landing and hopefully our hospitalization numbers will stay very low and that will be testimony to the effectiveness of those borders over the last two years, buying us that time."&nbsp;

On Wednesday, 61 deaths from COVID-19 were reported across Australia. None was reported that day in Western Australia, Tasmania or the Australian Capital Territory.&nbsp;

COVID-19: Western Australia ends closures as the country fully opens to travel

Pakistan have been handed a huge blow ahead of the start of their three-match Test series against Australia at home as fast bowler Haris Rauf has tested positive for COVID-19. The Australian cricket team is currently on a historic tour of Pakistan for the first time in 24 years. Australia are scheduled to play three Tests, as many ODIs and one T20I against the hosts.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday (March 01) confirmed that Rauf's test returned positive after being shited to a bo-secure bubble ahead of the three-match series. The entire Pakistan Test squad has undergone COVID-19 tests on Tuesday before their training session at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium which is the venue for the first Test between the two teams.

Rauf will now have to spend at least 14 days in isolation and return a negative test before he can return to action once again.
