The sudden surge in COVID-19 cases in the state of Maharashtra has left the administration worried. On Thursday, the state recorded 1,045 virus&nbsp;cases and active cases stood at 4,599. The state’s positivity rate stands at 4 per cent.&nbsp;

In fact, on June 1, the state had recorded 1,081 fresh COVID-19 cases, the highest daily rise in three months. While, a month ago, on May 1, the state had only 169 cases and 955 active cases.&nbsp;

In view of rising COVID-19 cases in the state, the Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had called a meeting of the COVID-19 task force today to discuss possible reasons for the sudden surge and how the&nbsp;further spread can be averted. &nbsp;

Speaking at the state COVID-19 task force meeting amid a rise in the number of cases over the past few days, Thackeray said the government will keep a watch over the situation for 15 days. He has also appealed to people to wear masks in public places, vaccinate themselves and follow discipline if they do not want restrictions or lockdown again.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

He has also requested people especially aged between 12-18 years and senior citizens to get vaccinated and also take booster shots. In the meeting, the CM also directed officials to increase daily testing. Currently, around 25,000-26,000 COVID19 tests are conducted daily. &nbsp;

The capital city of Mumbai is showing worrying numbers especially with monsoon around the corner. On June 1, the city witnessed the highest single-day jump in 116 days after 739 people tested positive for the virus. On June 2, it recorded 704 cases with no deaths. &nbsp;

The Mumbai Civic Body (BMC) commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has already directed officials to intensify testing for COVID-19 on a war footing and ask the staff of jumbo field hospitals to be vigilant in view of the significant rise in cases over the past few weeks. &nbsp;

However, experts say there is nothing to panic and the rise in cases could be due to multiple reasons. Vaccination coverage has slowed down and is poor in the under-18 and booster dose segments. Experts believe if proper discipline is followed like wearing masks especially in public places, then cases can come down drastically. &nbsp;

The Maharashtra administration has also warned citizens that if proper disciplined is not followed then the wearing of masks will be made compulsory again across the state. &nbsp;

India on Tuesday reported 1,68,063 new COVID-19 cases including 277 deaths in the last 24 hours.

The daily positivity cases have risen to 10.64 per cent with the number of active coronavirus cases at 8,21,446.

The number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 28 per cent since Thursday. The country had recorded&nbsp;90,928 coronavirus cases on January 6.

The number of Omicron cases has risen to 3,007 in the country and it has now spread to 27 states including Union Territories, the health ministry said.

The death toll due to the disease has climbed to 4,42,874, with 219 daily fatalities being recorded, the ministry said.

The count of daily new cases has remained below 50,000 for 78 consecutive days now, according to the ministry.

The tally of active cases has declined to 3,74,269, which comprises 1.13 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 97.54 per cent, the ministry added.

A reduction of 10,652 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours.&nbsp;Also, 12,08,247 COVID-19 tests were conducted in the country on Sunday, taking the total of such examinations to 54,30,14,076.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 2.26 per cent. This has been below three per cent for the last 14 days, and below five per cent for 97 consecutive days now, the ministry said.

The weekly positivity rate was recorded at 2.11 per cent. The figure has been below three per cent for the last 80 days, according to the health ministry.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease has surged to 3,24,47,032, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.33 per cent.

The health ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to co-morbidities.

"Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research," the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation.

The news of Shravan`s death was confirmed by his son Sanjeev Rathod. "He passed away at around 9.30 pm," Sanjeev told a news agency. 
 
Rathod had tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to Mumbai`s SL Raheja Hospital on Monday. The composer and his wife had travelled to Kumbh Mela a few days before he tested positive, revealed his son to a daily.&nbsp;

The FDA commissioner of the state has held an assembly meeting regarding the available stock of necessary medicines and equipment for COVID-19. He was satisfied after the meeting as the stocks were available to tackle a possible second wave of the virus.

According to the FDA, the state has 51,425 injections of Remdesivir, 20,25,381 Favipiravir tablets and their Nagpur lab has currently stored 1.97 lakh injections that are ready to be distributed.

Furthermore, oxygen for medical use is also available in ample quantities with 30 producers, 88 riffillers/distributers. Maharashtra has a collective capacity of 1287 metric tonnes per day of medical oxygen while the demand is at 513 MT per day. Hence the commissioner was assured that there was no shortage in terms of availability of medical oxygen.

The FDA also assured that N-95 masks, 2ply masks, 3ply masks and sanitisers will be available in the market at reasonable prices.

In what could be termed a "Christmas present" for the BMC, Asia`s largest slum Dharavi notched zero cases on Friday — first time since the COVID-19 pandemic appeared in the congested settlement on April 1, health officials said. 
 
At one point, it ranked as the worst hotspot and the most worrisome for the health authorities, but Dharavi now has a mere 12 active cases currently under treatment in local hospitals.

On Christmas, Mumbai's Dharavi records zero coronavirus cases

A&nbsp;spike of 55,079 cases and 876 deaths were reported in India in the last 24 hours. This has increased the coronavirus tally to&nbsp;2,702,743 including 673,166 active cases, 1,977,780 discharged/migrated and 51,797 deaths.

The country conducted&nbsp;899,864 tests on Monday. A total of 30,941,264 tests have been conducted till August 17,&nbsp;Indian Council of Medical Research reported.

The Ministry of Health said, "Focused implementation of Centre-led strategies has ensured prompt identification, timely isolation and effective clinical treatment, leading to reduced Case Fatality Rate. 30 States/UTs performed better than the national average."

India recorded single-day spike of 64,399 cases and 861 deaths in the last 24 hours on Sunday morning.

COVID 19: India records 52,050 cases in a single day; death toll nears 40,000

COVID-19: India crosses 18 lakh mark with 52,972 new cases

A serological survery has revealed that six out of ten people from Asia's biggest slum, Dharavi, can be identified as antibodies for the novel coronavirus.

The findings were revealed in a serological survey conducted in July from 6,936 people across three suburbs in Mumbai, India.

The survey reveals that more than half of the population has suffered and recovered from COVID-19. This is may be one of the highest population immunity levels known worldwide.

“Mumbai’s slums may have reached herd immunity,” said Jayaprakash Muliyil, chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee of India’s National Institute of Epidemiology, and the retired head of one of its premier medical colleges. “If people in Mumbai want a safe place to avoid infection, they should probably go there.”

The study was conducted by&nbsp;municipal authorities and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.

This is being categorised as one of the biggest herd immunity groups in the world. In a 'herd immunity' approach, the disease is consciously allowed to run through the area and citizens to produce more antibodies. However, in the case of Dharavi, the approach was not consciously adopted.

Dharavi, located on the West Coast of India, houses nearly&nbsp;1,000,000 people from the lower-income groups. It is considered to be Asia's biggest slum and one of the most densely populated areas of the world.

When the coronavirus started to spread across the locality, it was predicted that it would be very difficult to contain the spread of the deadly virus.

However, the steep decline in the number of positive cases tells a different story. First few cases in Dharavi were tested in the beginning of April and then the cases grew rapidly in numbers. However, in the last one month, the figures have decreased in a manner which can either be credited to an excellent response by the local bodies, or can be used as a proof that Dharavi has unknowingly reached herd immunity.

“One explanation is they did an excellent job containing it, the other is that herd immunity has been reached,” Muliyil said. “The virus does its work. The virus doesn’t worry about your quarantine and it is much more efficient than your efforts to contain it.”

Dharavi has only recorded nearly 253 coronavirus-related deaths till day, which can again contribute to the theory of herd immunity.

However, in the last one month, the figures have decreased in a manner which can either be credited to an excellent response by the local bodies, or can be used as a proof that Dharavi has unknowingly reached herd immunity. “One explanation is they did an excellent job containing it, the other is that herd immunity has been reached,” Muliyil said. “The virus does its work. The virus doesn’t worry about your quarantine and it is much more efficient than your efforts to contain it.” Dharavi has only recorded nearly 253 coronavirus-related deaths till day, which can again contribute to the theory of herd immunity. Patna to be in lockdown amid rising COVID-19 cases

More than 15 lakh people have been quarantined in Mumbai after contact-tracing so far since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the city civic body said.

Out of these, 5.34 lakh people were identified as high-risk contacts, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.

So far, 13.28 lakh people have completed their 14-day quarantine. As of now, 2.46 lakh people are under home quarantine and 14,288 under institutional quarantine, the BMC said on its website.

Out of 14,288 people under institutional quarantine, 11,409 are lodged at 328 CCC-1 (COVID care centre) facilities, which have a collective capacity of over 50,000 beds, while 2,879 are kept at 57 CCC-2 facilities, having more than 6,100 beds, the BMC said.

The CCC-1 facilities are set up mostly in hotels and halls and do not have 24-hour monitoring facility, while CCC-2 are government facilities where doctors and nurses are available round-the-clock.

The BMC said it has acquired several hotels, guest houses, gymkhanas, halls and other places for institutional quarantine and isolation purposes.

It has sealed 6,552 buildings and declared 750 slums and chawls (small tenements) as containment zones, after one or more persons there tested positive for coronavirus.

The number of active cases has shot up to 2,6304 in Delhi. In West Bengal, 649 coronavirus cases were reported with 16 deaths in 24 hours taking the number of cases to 19,819 along with 6,083 active cases. The death toll due to the virus in the state has climbed to 699.

Talking about extending the lockdown, Tope cleared the air by saying that there are no plans to re-impose or extend the lockdown. Instead, he stated that the state government is planning to relax the lockdown in phases, even though they are expecting an increase in the cases. He also hinted towards a phase-wise unlock very soon.

"We are seeing a lot of places where flattening of the curve has started like Sangli, Malegaon, and Solapur etc. Spread will increase it`s true, but we can`t close down everything including stopping economic activities. But there are certain places where lockdown can be imposed locally to contain the spread," he said.

He also added that the anti-viral drugs&nbsp;Remdesivir and&nbsp;Favipiravir will be made available in all districts of the state soon. The medicines will be free of cost in the government hospitals.
