Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke on Thursday threatened to launch a nationwide agitation if Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar failed to resign within 48 hours. Dipke claimed that Gyanesh Kumar is the “biggest anti-national in the country”. He said that the government was deciding who gets to vote and who does not since Gyanesh Kumar took over as the Chief Election Commissioner. “The BJP failed to secure a majority in the 2024 election. The panic button was pressed when they fell short of that majority... They realised then that the mood of the country was shifting and that regional forces were emerging very strongly, be it Uddhav Thackeray in Maharashtra, the NCP, Stalin, Pinarayi Vijayan, Arvind Kejriwal, or Mamata Banerjee. These chief ministers were targeted and defeated one by one.”“In West Bengal, 50,000 votes were deleted from Mamata Banerjee’s constituency, and she lost by a margin of around 15,000 votes. In MK Stalin’s constituency, 100,000 votes were deleted, and he lost by about 45,000 votes. In Delhi, 40,000 votes were deleted from Arvind Kejriwal’s constituency, and he lost by a margin of 4000-5000 votes," said Dipke. The fallout is a direct reaction to the Indian Express investigative report, which quoted internal communication within the Election Commission to suggest that two election commissioners have repeatedly objected to several key decisions, including developing new modules and portals for centralising the electoral database without their prior approval, alteration of Form 6 for new voter registration without any formal government notification and disenfranchisement of voters in Special Intensive Revision. They in fact tried to raise their concerns and wrote separately to Cabinet Secretary TV Somanathan. The Election Commission tried to shrug off the concerns by saying that differing opinions are normal in any institution, but it did not issue a specific response to the concerns raised in the report.

Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which went viral with its political satire movement that led to the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan from the role of Union Education Minister, is now facing a challenge from a new party, ‘Cockroach Janta Party - Democratic’. The new party has been founded by activist Manish Brahmbhatt, who has accused the original CJP of being “sold out and politicised” following the success of its Jantar Mantar protest. Brahmbhatt has claimed that the CJP has now become ‘Team Kejriwal’, referring to Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal.
Why was CJP-Democratic formed?
Brahmbhatt’s main objection centres on the way CJP selected its new wider team last month. While the original outfit has decided against entering electoral politics and instead plans to operate as a pressure group, it is currently pushing its nationwide ‘School Thik Karo’ campaign.Brahmbhatt alleged that volunteers and protesters were not consulted before the new committee was formed. He further claimed that several members of the team had links to the Aam Aadmi Party.“It has now become ‘Team Kejriwal’ because Abhijeet Dipke and the others formed a 12-member team while sitting in the comfort of their homes,” he said.“After the movement’s success, not a single volunteer or protester was invited or consulted for their opinion. Nor were the people connected via social media or Instagram asked about the necessary criteria; instead, they formed the team by including eight people associated with the Aam Aadmi Party, along with a female friend and college friends,” he added.
Demand for wider volunteer representation
Brahmbhatt said volunteers had proposed a national structure with five representatives from every state, including people involved in protests and grassroots activities. He alleged that the proposal was rejected and accused the original leadership of creating the committee through an “arbitrary” process rather than consulting its wider volunteer base.“The idea behind forming this team also originated with Arvind Kejriwal, as he has been deceitful from the very beginning,” he alleged. The original CJP is led by national convenor Abhijeet Dipke, with Saurav Das and Ashutosh Rana serving as co-conveners and Aafreen Nawaz as national secretary.

The Supreme Court on Monday (August 31) declined to interfere with the proposed September 5 protest march in Delhi by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), leaving the decision on permissions and law-and-order arrangements to the Centre and Delhi governments. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, said there were no compelling circumstances at this stage to presume that the proposed mobilisation would turn violent. The court stressed that all participants and authorities must act peacefully and within the legal framework. “We have no reason to doubt that everyone will behave in a peaceful and lawful manner…As of now, there are no compelling circumstances before us to presume or assume anything otherwise,” said the bench. “We are confident that everyone will follow the law, regulatory measures and they will also respect each other’s right -- whether fundamental rights or statutory rights under the existing legal framework,” the bench added. The court was hearing petitions filed by Shiv Upadhyay and retired Delhi Police officer Rajendra Singh, who sought restrictions on large-scale mobilisations, marches and organised demonstrations in security-sensitive parts of Lutyens’ Delhi, including India Gate and Central Vista. The petitioners also sought postponement or modification of the proposed September 5 march until after the BRICS Summit, scheduled to be held in Delhi on September 12 and 13. Appearing for Singh, advocate Rizwan Ahmad argued that the organisers had announced another march without obtaining police permission. “How can again they announce a similar march for September 5? He urged the court to defer the mobilisation until after the BRICS Summit, arguing that any untoward incident in the national capital ahead of the international gathering could attract significant global attention. “They have tasted blood and if there is any violence, even a small lathi charge, international media is going to broadcast it and the issue will be highlighted,” Ahmad said. Also Read: PM Modi meets Iranian President Pezeshkian on sidelines of SCO Summit in Bishkek The Supreme Court, however, declined to intervene in the matter, distinguishing between law-and-order decisions and issues that fall within its judicial domain. “This has to be considered in some other quarter. New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar witnessed another major mobilisation on Friday as protesters from the unreserved classes gathered under the banner of Reservation Reform Andolan, demanding changes to India’s reservation system and opposing the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) equity regulations. The demonstration was held amid heavy security, with Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel deployed around the protest site. As the gathering continued, security personnel moved in and detained several protesters. Demonstrators maintained that their protest was peaceful and focused on their opposition to the existing caste-based reservation system and the UGC norms. The protest was organised by Reservation Reform Andolan and led by NEET aspirant Harsh Dubey. It was also joined by Rajasthan-based General Sena and Chanakya Sena, along with the Karni Sena. The demonstration followed confusion over whether permission had been granted for the gathering at Jantar Mantar. Influencer Ajeet Bharti, who has been vocal about reservation-related issues and the UGC regulations, was also present. Videos shared on X by journalists and attendees showed protesters reciting the Hanuman Chalisa and raising chants of "Siyawar Ramchandra ki Jai". Some demonstrators also opposed the SC/ST Act and called for its withdrawal. They argued that laws should not be misused against individuals and urged the government to take steps to prevent such alleged misuse, according to a report by Aaj Tak.A ground report by UP Tak, India Today Digital’s sister portal, said protesters claimed that thousands had gathered, although there was no official estimate of the crowd. Barricades were erected around Jantar Mantar, while Delhi Police, RAF and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel were deployed in the area. Several social media accounts covering the protest claimed that the turnout challenged the perception that an anti-reservation demonstration would fail to attract a significant crowd.
Confusion over Jantar Mantar and Ramlila Maidan
The demonstration centred on demands for reforms in India’s reservation system. Several protesters argued that economic circumstances should be considered when determining eligibility for reservation benefits. The protesters also raised objections to the UGC equity regulations, which had been stayed. The protest was preceded by a dispute over permission and the venue. In a public notice, Delhi Police said office-bearers of the Reservation Hatao Andolan had been informed through official communication and asked everyone to "adhere [to] the lawful instructions and remain peaceful". However, organisers insisted on holding the demonstration at Jantar Mantar rather than shifting to another location. "We are sitting at Jantar Mantar. We have asked for permission to protest here, and this is exactly where we want to be. Anti-reservation protesters gathered at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar demanding reservation reforms and opposing UGC equity regulations amid heavy security

They argued that laws should not be misused against individuals and urged the government to take steps to prevent such alleged misuse, according to a report by Aaj Tak. A ground report by UP Tak, India Today Digital’s sister portal, said protesters claimed that thousands had gathered, although there was no official estimate of the crowd. Confusion over Jantar Mantar and Ramlila Maidan The demonstration centred on demands for reforms in India’s reservation system. And we will continue to sit here," anti-reservation activist Abhinay Pandey wrote on X. At the protest site, organiser Harsh Dubey alleged that people attempting to join the demonstration were being stopped outside. 'Should not be bullied': CJP says movement will expand beyond protests. Politics, or something bigger?

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), the student-led group that spearheaded nationwide protests over the alleged NEET paper leak, is preparing for its next phase after forcing one of the biggest policy responses to an education crisis in recent years. Following a month-long sit-in at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, the group’s core members will meet in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on August 5 to decide their future campaign, strategy and organisational roadmap. The meeting comes after the Centre announced sweeping examination reforms in response to the protests, while the education minister resigned amid mounting pressure. According to Reuters, the group has collected suggestions from students and supporters across India and is expected to decide whether it should remain focused on NEET or broaden its campaign to wider youth and education issues.
What issues could CJP take up next?
Having secured its first major demand of triggering examination reforms, CJP is widely expected to expand its agenda beyond NEET. Among the issues likely to feature prominently are reforms in recruitment examinations, including alleged paper leaks and delays in SSC, PSC, railway and other government recruitment tests. The group may also seek to monitor whether the Centre implements the reforms announced following the protests. Also read: CJP's Abhijit Dipke speaks to protesting students in Jharkhand, extends support to their demands: Will he go to Ranchi? Student rights are also expected to remain central to its campaign, with demands likely to include age relaxation for affected candidates, additional examination attempts, fee refunds and faster grievance redressal. Beyond examinations, unemployment and delayed government recruitment could become key campaign issues, alongside calls for greater transparency in examinations, secure testing systems and fair evaluation processes. Reuters reported that the organisation has sought suggestions from students nationwide, indicating its intention to launch a broader youth-focused campaign.
Can the movement sustain public support?
Analysts say maintaining momentum after achieving an initial objective is often the biggest challenge for issue-based movements. CJP’s ability to retain public support may depend on whether it continues addressing issues that directly affect students and job seekers while holding authorities accountable for implementing promised reforms. Also read: 'Only in reel or...': CJP's Abhijeet Dipke reacts to PM Modi's video pardoning protesters who 'abused' him Regular engagement with students, transparent communication and peaceful mobilisation are likely to remain critical in sustaining public trust. Expanding local volunteer networks and maintaining active state-level teams could also help keep the movement relevant beyond a single protest. Observers also note that remaining independent and focused on policy issues, rather than partisan politics, may help preserve the credibility that fuelled the movement’s rapid growth. A clear long-term roadmap and visible progress could determine whether CJP evolves into a lasting youth platform or loses momentum after its initial success.
What challenges lie ahead?
Expanding from a single-issue campaign into a broader public movement will present fresh organisational and political challenges. After the successful protests over NEET paper leaks, the Cockroach Janta Party meets on August 5 to plan its future, potentially expanding into broader recruitment reforms, unemployment, and youth activism nationwide.

Students from different states face different education and employment concerns, making it harder to build consensus on future priorities. A nationwide campaign will also require stronger leadership structures, larger volunteer networks and greater organisational capacity. As the movement grows, it may attract increased political scrutiny and criticism, while public expectations for quick results are also likely to rise. There is also a risk that taking up too many issues simultaneously could dilute the movement’s focus. CJP's Dipke claims BJP threatened his family to force him to join party

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has threatened to resume nationwide protests after the Supreme Court allowed investigations into FIRs filed during the anti-exam paper leak agitation to continue. While the court directed authorities not to take coercive action against eligible student protesters and ordered the preservation of CCTV footage and electronic evidence, it did not order the withdrawal of existing cases.

CJP leaders allege that the interim order contradicts assurances given by the central government during negotiations that led to the suspension of protests. Founder Abhijeet Dipke accused authorities of targeting students, while party spokesperson Saurav Das warned of fresh nationwide demonstrations if the government's commitments are not honored. Meanwhile, several states have begun withdrawing cases against eligible student protesters.

In a statement released on the social media platform X by the Cockroach Janata Party chief spokesperson, Saurav Das said that the Supreme Court interim order “must ring alarm bells across the country”. He expressed apprehension that it was “uninformed” and that BJP-ruled states could weaponise the order against protestors. He warned the government that it should not continue with FIRs and use the order as a justification for “reneging on the commitment it made on 25 July”.The Government of India assured that it will withdraw all FIRs against the protestors and no one would be “directly or indirectly targeted” for participating in the movement. However, the SC interim order allows the Government of India to carry on with the FIRs. “In particular, Direction No. 4, which permits governments to proceed with existing FIRs and carry out investigations, raises extremely serious concerns,” said Das in his post. He added that it was troubling that government lawyers failed to oppose the order, despite their assurances to the CJP. Also Read: Heartbreaking video shows Assam father carrying three children through neck-deep floodwaters

"The youth of India entered into this understanding in good faith. That good faith must not be betrayed. Institutions of constitutional importance must never be politicised and weaponised to not honour the guarantees." He demanded that they fulfil the commitment, and “honour both the letter and the spirit of the assurance that brought an end to the protest” before the deadline expires today. He warned that a failure to comply with the agreement will inadvertently provoke them to engage in nationwide agitation once again."If the harassment of students at the hands of the police continues, the Cockroach Janta Party will respond with a massive peaceful protest soon. The Govt must stop targeting and witch-hunting students," said Abhijit Dipke in a post on the platform X.The protest by CJP was called off after the Government agreed to all the demands of protesting youth. Among the demands withdrawl of FIRs against the protesting youth has become a point of contention between the two sides.

The Supreme Court has made a significant observation amid growing controversy over the handling of protests in Delhi. The court's remarks come as questions mount over restrictions, police action, and the right to peaceful protest.

The case has reignited a wider debate on civil liberties, public order, and democratic rights, with protesters, political leaders, and legal experts closely watching the developments. What did the top court say, and what could it mean for future demonstrations across India?

Delhi protests: Top court's big remark on protest crackdown

The images from Jantar Mantar, the rise of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) as a symbol of student anger, and the resignation of the Union Education Minister have together created a rare national moment. The immediate political objective may have been achieved, but the larger question remains: Will India settle for a resignation, or will it demand a transformation? There is an old saying that “cockroaches survive where cleanliness and accountability fail.” The metaphor is strikingly relevant today. Paper leaks, opaque examination processes, institutional complacency and administrative lapses are the cockroaches of India’s education system. Eliminating one individual without disinfecting the ecosystem merely allows the infestation to return in another form. The protests, therefore, must not become another chapter in India’s familiar political script. If the movement is genuinely about educational justice—and not merely about political optics—then every stakeholder, from students and parents to teachers, policymakers, universities and civil society, must come together to shape structural reforms. India does not need another cycle of outrage; it needs legislation that restores trust in examinations and strengthens public education. The timing could not be more significant. India is home to nearly 1.4 billion people, with one of the world’s youngest populations. A demographic dividend can become a demographic disaster if educational institutions fail to inspire confidence. Every compromised examination is not merely an administrative failure; it is a breach of the social contract between the State and its youth. Ironically, the country already possesses a broad blueprint for reform. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 envisions holistic learning, multidisciplinary education, foundational literacy, technology-enabled classrooms, vocational exposure from Class VI and greater flexibility in higher education. It also seeks to raise public investment in education to 6% of GDP and improve access, equity and quality. These are ambitious and necessary goals. Implementation, however, is where policy meets reality. Government data through UDISE+ points to improvements in enrolment and school infrastructure, while recent policy assessments by NITI Aayog recognise progress in access and governance but also underline persistent gaps in learning outcomes, teacher capacity and regional disparities. The lesson is simple: reforms announced from New Delhi must ultimately succeed in classrooms across rural Bihar, tribal Odisha, urban Maharashtra and every district in between. The present crisis should therefore become an opportunity to revisit examination governance. India needs a professionally managed, technology-driven and legally accountable assessment architecture. Question paper security, encrypted digital logistics, independent audit mechanisms, faster prosecution of organised leak networks and time-bound compensation mechanisms for affected students should become statutory requirements rather than administrative discretion. Equally important is strengthening the mental health support system for students who increasingly carry the burden of high-stakes examinations. Every generation has, during its halcyon days, contributed to nation-building. Today’s Gen Z, roughly those aged 14 to 29 years, is carrying that responsibility with fresh ideas, energy and technological confidence. The generations before them built institutions, expanded literacy and strengthened democracy. The present generation now seeks institutions that are transparent, accountable and fair. Nation-building is not the responsibility of Gen Z alone; it is a shared obligation across generations. “Mera Desh Mahan” must evolve from a slogan into a collective national commitment. India has witnessed examination controversies under governments of different political persuasions. Paper leaks, administrative failures, resignations and political blame games are not exclusive to one regime. Governments change; the systemic weaknesses often remain. Students deserve policy outcomes, not political theatre. The resignation may have addressed the immediate demand on the streets, but history rarely remembers resignations. It remembers reforms. The Right to Education transformed access. NEP 2020 attempted to redefine learning. The next milestone should be a robust legal framework that guarantees integrity in examinations and accountability in educational governance. Jantar Mantar has often amplified public sentiment. This time, it has amplified a generation’s demand for credibility. If policymakers listen beyond the slogans, this moment can become the beginning of India’s next education revolution. The real victory will not lie in who resigned, but in whether the ‘cockroaches’ of corruption, complacency and incompetence are finally driven out of India’s education system. Jantar Mantar, CJP & resignation -- Will this momentum exterminate the ‘cockroaches’ in India’s education system?

CJP calls off its 5-week protest.
The move came hours after Dharmendra Pradhan resigned as Education Minister.
The party is calling it a "win for democracy" as thousands of supporters celebrate at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.

Cockroach Janta Party calls off protest after Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation

The resignation of the India's Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following weeks of nationwide NEET protests has altered the political landscape. Combined with the government's decision to initiate talks with student representatives, the move appears designed not only to address public outrage but also to contain a movement that was beginning to acquire national political significance. Whether it succeeds remains uncertain. But one question is increasingly difficult to ignore: did the government prevent the emergence of a new youth-driven political force? History offers an instructive comparison. The anti-corruption movement led by Anna Hazare in 2011 started as a citizens' protest demanding accountability. Within a few years, it evolved into the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), fundamentally reshaping politics in Delhi and influencing national discourse. What started as a movement eventually became an electoral force. The NEET protests, while rooted in concerns over examination integrity and accountability, displayed some early characteristics of a broader mass movement. Thousands of students gathered across the country, social media amplified their message, and public sympathy extended well beyond those directly affected by the examination controversy. Had the protests continued to gather momentum without a meaningful political response, they could have expanded beyond the issue of entrance examinations into a wider campaign focused on governance, transparency and youth representation. Instead, the government opted for a different strategy. By accepting the education minister's resignation and opening channels of dialogue with protest leaders, it signaled responsiveness at a crucial moment. Politically, such decisions often serve multiple purposes. They help reduce public anger, reassure moderate voices within the movement, shift media attention from confrontation to negotiations, and make it more difficult for protest leaders to argue that the government is unwilling to listen. This does not necessarily resolve the underlying grievances, but it can significantly weaken the momentum required for a protest movement to evolve into a lasting political platform. Also Read: 'I am overjoyed. The future of the movement will depend less on symbolic gestures and more on whether students believe meaningful reforms follow. If demands related to examination transparency, institutional accountability and systemic changes remain unresolved, public dissatisfaction could resurface. Equally important is the direction chosen by the movement's leaders. Sustaining protests is one challenge; building a political organisation is another altogether. Electoral politics requires leadership, funding, organisational structure and a long-term vision that extends beyond a single issue. There are also important differences between the NEET protests and the movement that gave birth to AAP. The anti-corruption campaign resonated across generations, classes and regions because corruption affected virtually every citizen. The NEET protests, although emotionally powerful and nationally visible, remain centred on educational governance. Unless the movement broadens its agenda to encompass wider concerns affecting young Indians, employment, governance, institutional reforms and public accountability, it may struggle to achieve comparable political reach. Nevertheless, the protests have demonstrated something significant. India's youth have shown an unprecedented ability to organise, mobilise and sustain national attention through both digital platforms and street protests. Even if this particular movement does not transform into a political party, it has created networks, leadership and public awareness that could shape future civic action. For the government, the minister's resignation may have successfully reduced the immediate political risk. Whether it has prevented the rise of a future youth-driven political force is a question only time can answer. If reforms are implemented and trust is restored, the protests may be remembered as a catalyst for institutional change. If not, this episode could instead become the foundation upon which a larger youth movement eventually emerges. The government may have won the moment. It has not necessarily settled the larger political question.

Did the government's response to the NEET protests stop India's next youth political movement, or merely delay a larger reckoning?
