Additional Director General (ADG) Prashant Kumar on Thursday said that 317 people have been arrested and 79 cases registered in connection with the violence during the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/anti-caa-protest-stone-pelters-from-kashmir-were-called-to-create-unrest-in-uttar-pradesh-says-mos-home-affairs-nityanand-rai-270411">anti-Citizenship Amendment Act</a> (CAA) protests in Meerut.

"79 cases have been registered and 317 were arrested. 108 police personnel are injured in which 10 sustained firearm injuries. Ten administration officials and 7 people including some journalists also sustained injuries. Five people lost their lives in the violence," Kumar told ANI.

"The administration is educating people on CAA and we are also monitoring social media."

The Chief Imam also appealed the protestors to refrain from violence.

"I would like to make an appeal to all the citizens of this country that peace must continue. Staging a protest is our democratic right. We must protest, but peacefully," Ilyasi said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday accused Congress of spreading rumours about the newly-amended citizenship law and challenged party leader Rahul Gandhi to highlight even one clause in the Act which has any provision to take away the citizenship.

"Congress and company are spreading rumours that this act will take away the citizenship of minorities. I challenge Rahul to show even one clause in the act that has provision to take away citizenship. Do not disrupt the peace in the country and lead people astray," Shah said.

I appeal for calm, don't listen to rumours: PM Modi on anti-CAA protest

A Delhi Court reserved till December 28 the verdict on a bail petition moved by fifteen accused who were arrested after a protest in Delhi's Daryaganj area against the amended citizenship Act turned violent last week.

Sessions Judge Satish Kumar heard the bail plea of the nine accused today and later reserved the verdict.

The Delhi Police had arrested 15 people and detained 40 on December 20 after police and protestors clashed in the area. All the 15 accused were then sent to 14-days judicial custody.

Initially, six accused moved the court seeking bail. On their petition, the court had issued a notice to the Delhi Police and slated the matter for hearing to December 28.

The other nine approached the court seeking bail later. Advocate Siddharth Aggarwal, representing the nine accused, told the court that the case of 436 [mischief] cannot be made against his clients.

"Police can call all the accused to police stations for questioning. What is the need to keep them in judicial custody?" he questioned.

Additional Public Prosecutor (APP), however, opposed the bail plea by asserting that the case is in the initial stage and the police are awaiting the Medicolegal Case (MLC) report.&nbsp;

It gave the interim direction in response to PILs that were filed opposing the rally. This was done after the Tamil Nadu government counsel informed that Police have denied permission, as there was no firm commitment from the organizers on taking responsibility in case of any violence and damage to property.

Right from the time, it was being debated in parliament the DMK and their allies’ parliamentarians had expressed their vehement opposition to the then CAB. After the bill was passed the DMK went on the offensive against the AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu, whose MPs along with those of PMK had voted in favour of the bill in the Rajya Sabha (Upper house of parliament). The AIAMDK and PMK are allies of the BJP and had joined the NDA ahead of the 2019 General Elections.&nbsp;

“The Indian Constitution is secular and the government cannot enact any law that will discriminate against people based on religion. By excluding the Sri Lankan Tamils, the BJP has shown that it is not only against the Muslims but also the Sri Lankan Tamils” Stalin said during an agitation in Kanchipuram district in the previous week.&nbsp;

However, on various occasions, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had assured the people that the AIADMK would ensure that no harm would occur to the minority communities and how the CAA was not a threat to Indian citizens, irrespective of their religion. In a statement, he also mentioned that rumours were being spread across the Muslim community and urged the citizens to not fall for false propaganda. The statement also emphasized that the Chief Minister had personally met the Prime Minister and Home Minister to provide dual citizenship for Sri Lankan Tamils.

"Till now, 879 people have been arrested under substantive offences while 5000 persons who may instigate violence or vitiate atmosphere are bound down on the basis of suspicion," he added. 
 
"A total of 135 criminal cases have been registered against the miscreants. Fifteen people have died while 288 police personnel are injured," said the top cop.

He said that police officials and civil administration are reaching out to community members and their leaders, requesting them to cooperate in maintaining law and order

He added that damage to public property is being assessed and soon action would be taken against those involved, including confiscation of their properties to compensate for the losses.

Anti-CAA protests in UP: 879 arrested, 15 dead, 5000 in preventive custody

Internet services have been restored in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, reported news agency ANI. "They should try to convince the people and the common-man to enhance the feelings of brotherhood in the society. Anyone involved in the acts of violence should be brought to the notice of Administration," the statement added.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday addressed a rally át Delhi's Ramlila Maidan and said that the new citizenship law will benefit the "marginalised" and that the country's citizens don't need to worry.

The prime minister urged the citizens not to believe the rumour mongers.

"A total of 135 criminal cases have been registered against the miscreants. Fifteen people have died while 288 police personnel are injured," said the top cop.&nbsp;

CAA fallout: Member of Malaysian central government coalition says PM Mahathir has overreacted

The District Magistrate of Ghaziabad on Friday announced that Internet services in the area will remain suspended till 10 am on Saturday.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) sources have said that the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act is under the Central government's control and will finalise who all will be involved in the enforcement of legislation, news agency ANI reported.&nbsp;

"Implementation of the Act is under centre. We will finalise who all will be involved in implementation. It will be a digital and easy process so that people don't face any problem," MHA sources on some states denying implementation of the new citizenship law.

Sources said that the ministry is in the process of framing rules for CAA and people can give their suggestions.

"We brought the Bill after we consulted all, there were discussions. But, they have the right to go to the court and the people have the right to protest too. Those who want to give suggestions can give. We`re in process of framing the rule," they said on the protests against CAA adding that the CAA will not affect the Indian citizens.&nbsp;

"If any country has illegal migrants than the government has the right to through them out anyway," sources said on international bodies' reaction on CAA.

Centre seeks suggestions from protesters over Citizenship Amendment Act

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday said that a meeting against National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will be held on December 23 in all the sub-division headquarters of the state.

"'No NRC &amp; No CAB'&nbsp;meeting will be held on 23rd December in all the sub-division headquarters of the state. All the party leaders have been informed," Mamata Banerjee said.

The Chief Minister asserted that all the party leaders have been informed regarding the meeting.

"BJP is planning to malign my image by creating fake videos and spreading false information," said Banerjee.

On her statement - 'Let an impartial organisation like UN or Human Rights Commission form a committee to see how many people are in favour or against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)', Banerjee said,&nbsp;"I mentioned only opinion poll. I said the Human Rights Commission and the UN are impartial institutions." she added.

The Chief Minister further said, "Let there be planning with experts of my country. They must organise an opinion poll and the Human Rights Commission must take care of what's going on. I said the UN must watch, also said this about the National Human Rights Commission. Let them see if people are accepting this or not."

Banerjee has been vehemently opposing the amended Citizenship Act and has said that she will not allow the legislation to be implemented in West Bengal.

If people protest a controversial law in a peaceful manner, what is the problem? Why should civil disobedience warrant the arrest of scholars? Should the government stifle the voices of protesters or listen to them?&nbsp;

The government is losing control on the narrative. Even its traditional supporters in the civil society are calling this move the proverbial last straw.

So what should the government do? After all, it got the Bill cleared in Parliament with the due procedure. It should wait for the Supreme Court hearing, allow peaceful protests, prevent violence, and most importantly, address the concerns of the people.

It will help in two ways:

2. Send out a strong message on the health of our democracy to the people of India and the rest of the world.

It should be reiterated that the levers of Indian democracy are thriving and well oiled and the judiciary will decide on constitutional matters.

The government's brazen and aggressive posturing on CAA&nbsp;has attracted criticism even external players are exploiting the situation to peddle lies about India.

The government can solve this by allowing, ensuring and facilitating peaceful protests.&nbsp;

The people of India voted the BJP back to power in May 2019 with overwhelming numbers. However, a big mandate does not mean absolute power - if anything - it means more responsibility.

And remember, Section 144 of the CRPC is not a tool of suppression of dissent. It is meant to be used when there is an emergency situation. Let there be calm, let there be peaceful protests.

Opposition to India's new Citizenship law seems to be spreading to more and more cities and for the first time since protests started, there have been reports of casualties due to police firing.

Three people have died - two in Mangaluru and one in Lucknow - during violent protests in these two cities.&nbsp;

The United States has now issued a security alert for its citizens living in India, asking them to keep a low profile and avoid areas with demonstrations and protests. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

In Lucknow, mobile internet and SMS services remain suspended until December 21.

The Delhi police are reportedly using drones to keep a track of the developments, with 10 companies of the Central Reserve Police Force and the Rapid Action Force being deployed in the North-East Delhi.

At Seelampur, the police conducted a flag march under the stewardship of senior officers of the Delhi Police.

Students and residents took to the streets again at the Jamia University gate, to oppose the new Citizenship law.
