Canada has made a record by inviting nearly 400,000 new permanent residents in the country in the year 2021. Breaking its all-time record, this is the second time that the country has been able to achieve this figure since its foundation in 1867.<o:p></o:p>

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) confirmed the news in a press release. <o:p></o:p>

"To support Canada’s post-pandemic recovery and chart a more prosperous future, the Government of Canada set a target of welcoming 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021, as part of the 2021–2023 Immigration Levels Plan," the release stated. "The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, today announced that Canada has reached its target and welcomed more than 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021. Surpassing the previous record from 1913, this is the most newcomers in a year in Canadian history."<o:p></o:p>

The goal was set by the authorities a little before the coronavirus pandemic began. The original goal was to welcome nearly 341,000 new residents in the year 2020 but Canada was only able to achieve 184,000 due to the onset of the pandemic-cause lockdown.

However, the authorities doubled their efforts to reach the target and help people come to Canada. This brought in the new target figure of 401,000 new immigrants.<o:p></o:p>

"This historic achievement is particularly significant in the face of the pandemic’s many challenges. From closed borders to domestic lockdowns, global migration has been upended by COVID-19," the release read. "But the employees of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) rose to the occasion and processed a record half a million applications in 2021. To achieve this, IRCC added resources, embraced new technology and brought more processes online. These changes are all permanent improvements to Canada’s immigration system."<o:p></o:p>

However, given the pandemic, Canadian authorities played smart and focused majorly on immigrants who were already residing in the country on study, business, work or tourist visas. They started helping make those immigrants have a swift transition in addition to helping those coming from abroad. <o:p></o:p>

According per the technicality, a landing can be considered if a personal comes to Canada from abroad or is currently in the country on temporary visas and gains the resident status from within the borders. Officials used this technicality and considering that people residing in Canada are less affected by Covid disruptions and travel restrictions, the officials were able to hand out more number of permanent visas.<o:p></o:p>

"As we continue to struggle with the pandemic, we made the most of the talent already within our borders. The majority of these new permanent residents were already in Canada on temporary status," the release explained. "Most notably, we launched new programs to engage essential workers, health care professionals, international graduates and French-speaking newcomers. Family reunification is another pillar of our system, and we reunited spouses and children while enabling more families to sponsor parents and grandparents. Finally, with many countries closing their doors to refugees, we continued to offer the world’s most vulnerable shelter in Canada."<o:p></o:p>

If you are a pancake lover and are wondering if the lack of maple syrup in Canada might affect your regular dose, fret not, Quebec is about to save your craving.<o:p></o:p>

Given a very poor harvest in the country and a rising demand for maple syrup, the supply of the syrup has been staggering. However, now, the Quebec province has decided to tap into its strategic reserves to make sure that the world can get back to enjoying the sweet syrup.

Experts have warned locals and producers that the alarming change in temperature, caused due to global warming, may bring an extreme shortage of maple syrup if the same demand trend continues.<o:p></o:p>

After the warning, to make sure that the shortage is avoided and demands of maple syrup lovers can be fulfilled, Quebec Maple Syrup Producers have decided to release more than half of the stockpile of syrup as a buffer between the supply and demand.<o:p></o:p>

"It's normal, that's what we want: The reserves must be the buffer between temperature, demand and production," explained the organization's president Serge Beaulieu.

Beaulieu’s company represents more than 11,000 maple syrup producers and is one of the leading names in the maple syrup industry, especially in Quebec — a city that produces nearly three quarters of the world’s maple syrup.<o:p></o:p>

Quebec Maple Syrup Producers will now be taking out their backup supply from the warehouse which is stationed in the town of Laurierville, near Quebec City and is the size of five football fields with barrels of nearly 45 gallons stacked row after row till the ceiling.<o:p></o:p>

Meanwhile, experts have warned that the yield per maple tree faces the danger of decreasing by as much as 15 per cent by 2050 due to increasing climate change, especially the warm weather in April.

As the Omicron variant takes over the world, French Prime Minister has warned that the new variant can become the dominant one in France from the start of 2022.<o:p></o:p>

Jean Castex has warned people that if the locals do not follow the basic Covid regulations, the Omicron variant may soon take over the whole nation. "While we have given time, a lot of time for those French people who were hesitant and had doubts, in January we will strengthen the incentive for vaccination, because it is not acceptable that the refusal of a few million French people to be vaccinated, puts the life of an entire country at risk," he said.

As France fears dominance of Omicron Covid variant in 2022, Canada lifts travel ban

To battle the growing Covid cases, Canada will be advising its population to avoid international travel as much as possible. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government is expected to advise Canadians to avoid non-essential international travel, claims a report by Reuters. As of now, Canada has travel bans on 10 African countries due to the Omicron variant.&nbsp;

Peter Juni, director of Ontario's Covid science advisory table, urged people to take precautions and get vaccinated. He further told people to not take this variant lightly.

"What really worries me is that people are asleep at the steering wheel, internationally. They have wishful thinking it will be mild...This is not a realistic attitude," Juni said

Earlier, Canada's top health official had said that Covid cases in Canada may see a rapid surge in the coming days due to the Omicron variant.&nbsp;

There has been a massive surge of Covid cases in Ontario. This variant accounts for almost 40 per cent of Canada's population.

The Omicron variant, which was discovered in November is now spreading at an 'unprecedented' rate. World Health Organization Director-General Tedros A Ghebreyesus provided an update on the Omicron variant strain, saying that 77 nations have already reported cases of the novel strain.

As per Dr Tedros, vaccination alone will not be enough to stop the pandemic and mask use, social distancing, ventilation, and hand hygiene should be prioritised.

(With inputs from agencies)

After the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom, Canada now announced a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, scheduled to be held between February 4 to February 20 next year. Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada said that the nation remains "deeply disturbed" by reports of human rights violations in China which is the reason why the country will not send any diplomatic representatives to the event. In a news conference, PM Trudeau said, "As many (of our) partners around the world, we are extremely concerned by the repeated human rights violations by the Chinese government." However, just like the above-mentioned countries, Canada will also send athletes to the Games. "Regarding the safety of our athletes, I can assure you that everything will be done by Canada and our allies to ensure that our athletes can focus on one thing and one only […]: representing Canada well and winning. Their job is to do that," Trudeau said. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said Canada needed to send a strong message to Beijing. In the conference, Joly said, "We have several countries in the world sending a clear message to China that human rights violations [are] unacceptable. That's why we work at the diplomatic level together. That's why we work in coalition." "This announcement makes an important distinction between athlete participation and government officials' participation in the Games. History has shown that boycotting athletes only hurts athletes without creating significant changes," COC said. Canada-China ties Recently, Canada's relations with Western countries are worsening over a range of issues as China has been facing criticism over reported genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang and other human rights abuses. If we talk about Canada-China ties, the relations deteriorated over Beijing's detention of two Canadian nationals in response to Canada's arrest on a US warrant of Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of Huawei's founder. All three were released and repatriated in September.

In a first, Canada has detected coronavirus cases in three white-tailed deer. While humans were struggling to battle with the deadly virus and its newly emerging variant, now, even the wildlife is also in danger of being infected by the virus.&nbsp;

According to the National Centre for Foreign Animal Disease, the samples were collected early in November in the Estrie region of Quebec. The samples were collected through a "big-game" registration station.&nbsp;

"Similar to findings in the United States, the deer showed no evidence of clinical signs of disease, and were all apparently healthy. The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) was notified on December 1, 2021," read the statement by the agency.

The murder rate in Canada last year rose to its highest level since 2005, pushed up in part by the country's worst-ever mass shooting, in which 22 people died, Statistics Canada said on Thursday.

Statscan also noted societal stresses it said had been caused by lockdowns linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Canadian police reported 743 murders in 2020, up from 687 in 2019. The murder rate increased to 1.95 per 100,000 people, the highest in 15 years, from 1.83 per 100,000 people in 2019.

The Canadian rate has gradually declined since its last recent peak in 1991 of 2.69 homicides per 100,000 population.

"While homicide continues to be a relatively rare occurrence, representing less than 0.2% of all violent crimes in Canada in 2020, homicide rates are considered benchmarks for levels of violence," Statscan said in a commentary.

By comparison, the overall U.S. murder rate in 2020 was around 6.5 homicides per 100,000 people, according to FBI data.

The Canadian increase was driven by more murders in the provinces of Alberta and Nova Scotia.

Gabriel Wortman killed 13 people in Nova Scotia on the night of April 18, 2020, and another nine the next day before police shot him dead.

This contributed to an "uncharacteristically high homicide count and rate for the province," Statscan said.

The two most populated cities in Alberta, Calgary and Edmonton, recorded large increases, and each contributed 15 more murders to the national tally than in 2019.

Toronto, Canada's largest city, saw a 22% decrease in the rate of firearm-related homicides from 1.03 per 100,000

population to 0.80.

There were 15 more firearm-related killings in Canada last year, compared with 2019, and gang-related murders decreased 10% in the same period.
