<p>"A lot of ice has collected on telephone poles and tree branches. What that does is cause the tree branches to come down and touch the high-powered lines and arc, sometimes causing a fire. We've had a couple of telephone poles on fire," said Keith Guptill, Moncton Fire Department which received several calls on Monday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Canada has imposed sanctions on four Sri Lankans including former presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The sanctions were imposed on Tuesday (January 10) for committing what Canada called "gross and systematic violations of human rights" during the country's civil war.</p>

<p>In addition to former presidents, sanctions have also been imposed on Staff Sergeant Sunil Ratnayake and Lt Commander Chandana P Hettiarachchithe, the Canadian foreign ministry said.</p>

<p>"The Special Economic Measures (Sri Lanka) Regulations impose on listed persons a prohibition on any transaction (effectively, an asset freeze) by prohibiting persons in Canada and Canadians outside Canada from engaging in any activity related to any property of these listed persons or providing financial or related services to them," the ministry said in a statement.</p>

<p>"The individuals listed in the Schedule to the Regulations are also rendered inadmissible to Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act," it added.</p>

<p>Former Sri Lanka president Goyabaya Rajapaksa briefly fled the country last summer in the wake of massive protests over the unprecedented economic crisis.</p>

<p>Sri Lanka’s majority Sinhalese population had praised the brothers for defeating Tamil separatists after a 26-year civil war, which occurred from 1983 to 2009.</p>

<p>Also sanctioned are two senior military officers, including Ratnayake, whom a court sentenced to death for his role in a massacre of Tamils in 2000. He was later pardoned by the government.</p>

<p>Ottawa is also sanctioning Navy commander Hettiarachchi, who has been accused of abducting civilians who were later killed.</p>

<p>“This control on arrival is not a control to prevent citizens entering our territory but a more scientific control which will allow us very precisely to check different variants,” said Braun, as per AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>James Bauder, the founder of a group called Canada Unity which oversaw the organising of the protests last year, said the repeat event was cancelled because he could not "guarantee public safety" and that going ahead with the protests could have invited severe sanctions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bauder cited&nbsp;"several security breaches and personal character attacks" on himself as another reason for backing out of the event, according to an AFP report.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In December, Bauder said he would bring a four-day event back to Ottawa on the first anniversary of the 2022 demonstration and that all the big rigs would make daily trips to Parliament Hill.</p>

<p>However, after the authorities suggested that they would take a 'zero-tolerance' approach toward such a protest, Bauder said he would take the convoy to Winnipeg instead.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a Facebook post, Bauder, however, hinted at staging a comeback in 2024 after a year of 'solid' planning.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If the plan goes well, in Feb 2024. (will take a solid year to plan properly) I will be in Toronto with Team Canada Unity attending as a guest at a Sacred Ceremony event that could be viewed as Biblical... (No peeking) First, let's get to the Truth."</p>

<p>Canada has placed a ban on foreigners buying property. The ban which took effect on Sunday aims to make homes available to Canadians facing a housing crunch.</p>

<p>It is not a blanket ban and allows certain individuals such as refugees and permanent residents who are not citizens to purchase the property. Furthermore, it only applies to city dwellings and not to recreational properties like summer cottages etc.</p>

<p>"The observed declines are consistent with long-standing predictions regarding the demographic effects of climate change on polar bears," said the researchers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The fall in the number of bears in the region has been ongoing for decades. Since the 1980s the polar bear population has decreased by nearly 50 per cent which stood around 1,200 at the time.</p>
