Canada's foreign ministry on Sunday said that the country would temporarily withdraw non-essential Canadian employees and remaining dependents from its embassy in Ukraine. The decision has been taken amid the international standoff over Russian troops massed on Russia-Ukraine border.

"As we continue to closely monitor the situation, our highest priority remains the safety and security of Canadians. Our officials stand ready to provide consular assistance to Canadian citizens, as required," the ministry said in a statement.

The embassy in Kyiv remains open, it said.

Canada said last week it will reinforce the team at the Canadian Embassy with experts in security, conflict management, democratic reform and consular services.

"Together, they will increase our diplomatic capacity and allow us to continue to assess and respond to the evolving situation in support of Ukraine," it said.

Russia currently has more than 100,000 of its soldiers and military equipment at its border with Ukraine. Russia has been repeatedly claiming that it did not intend to invade Ukraine but claims from Russian camps suggesting security threat from Ukraine is seen as attempt to create a pretext for invasion.

Tensions are high between Russia and the West. Russia is fiercely against Ukraine joining the NATO and demanding assurances that this will never happen.

Meanwhile, Canada’s top health official has said that the fast-spreading Omicron variant of Covid may have peaked in the country.

Canada’s chief public health officer Dr Theresa Tam in a statement released on Friday said that there have been “early indications that infections may have peaked at the national level, including daily case counts, test positivity, Rt (or effective reproduction number), and wastewater surveillance trends”.

The average case count has decreased by 28 per cent compared with the previous week, according to Tam, but she warned that the 22 per cent test positivity rate indicates there is still “widespread” disease activity across the country.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has vowed to take action against the human traffickers after four Indians, including an infant, were found to be dead while trying to illegally cross the US-Canada border in a freezing cold temperature.

He said that Canada is working very closely with the United States to stop smuggling and help people “taking unacceptable risks”.

“It was an absolutely mind-blowing story. It’s so tragic to see a family die like that, victims of human traffickers...and of people who took advantage of their desire to build a better life,” Trudeau said.

“This is why we are doing all we can to discourage people from crossing the border in an irregular or illicit manner. We know there are great risks in doing so,” he added.

The bodies of four people — two adults, a teen and an infant — were found on the Canadian side of the US/Canada border near Emerson on Wednesday.

A Florida-based man identified as Steve Shand, 47, was arrested the following day in connection with human smuggling.

“It would almost be like a lunar-type landscape and you can become lost or disoriented very quickly in those kinds of conditions, especially as you’re beginning to freeze and no doubt panic,” Trudeau told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

“There’s no lights up there. You would have probably been in close to zero visibility.”

Reacting to the human tragedy, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed shock over the incident and asked India’s envoys to the US and Canada to respond to the situation.

“Shocked by the report that 4 Indian nationals, including an infant have lost their lives at the Canada-US border. Have asked our Ambassadors in the US and Canada to urgently respond to the situation,” he said in a tweet.

Canada's second most populous province Quebec is planning to bring in new and stricter regulations for the unvaccinated. Authorities in Quebec are looking to impose tax on people who are refusing to get covid-19 vaccines, they call it the health contribution tax.

Canada could be staring at the beginning of a logistics issue, as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is pushing ahead with a vaccine mandate for international truckers. The critics have said this will exacerbate the driver shortages and also drive up the price of goods imported from the united states of America.

If you want to buy alcohol or cannabis in Canada’s province of Quebec at government-funded stores, you will soon have to show a COVID-19 vaccination proof first. The plan seems to have been brought into existence to encourage people to get vaccine. During a press conference on Thursday, Health Minister Christian Dubé announced the new directive. "If the unvaccinated aren't happy with this situation, there is a very simple solution at your disposal. It is to get vaccinated. It's free,” the minister said. "If you don’t want to get vaccinated, stay home," he added. According to Dubé, the government has been limiting the places accessible to unvaccinated people to limit their contacts and reduce the risk of transmitting the virus. It will require three doses (including a booster) to qualify. For residents in the age group of 50 or more, the government has given access to the booster shots. The officials will soon expand the access to all adults as of January 17, CBC reported. (With inputs from agencies)

A group of passengers who were found partying and breaking several Covid norms aboard a chartered flight from Montreal to Mexico have been left stranded after three airlines declined to fly them home to Canada.

Several videos of the party, which is said to have taken place on December 30, were shared on social media, showing unmasked passengers in close proximity. In one video, a large bottle of vodka appears to be passed among passengers and a woman appears to be smoking an electronic cigarette.

According to Canadian media reports, some in the unruly crowd have also tested positive for COVID-19 since then.

Three airlines have refused to take them home. Sunwing Airlines cancelled the return charter flight from Cancun that had been scheduled for Wednesday while Air Transat and Air Canada have also declined to carry the passengers.

The whole incident has caused outrage in Canada, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau saying that he was “extremely frustrated” with the incident.

“It’s a slap in the face to see people putting themselves, putting their fellow citizens, putting airline workers at risk by being completely irresponsible,” Trudeau said at a briefing.

Among those who tested positive include a 19-year-old student from Quebec who said she felt abandoned, not knowing how she’ll pay for her hotel room as her stay is extended indefinitely.

“The organizer just left everybody. I don’t know who’s still here. All the flights have been cancelled,” Rebecca St-Pierre, who is quarantined in a Mexico hotel, told The Canadian Press.

She estimated that about 30 others on the flight have tested positive.

After Havana syndrome and a mystery disease in Sudan, another mysterious condition has emerged in the Canadian province of New Brunswick, an anonymous whistleblower has claimed. The employee of Vitalité health network has revealed that the illness is targeting a growing number of young people as it causes a swift cognitive decline among those who are affected.

The illness was first announced in 2021, and ever since then, the cases under investigation stand at the same number - 48. However, several other sources claim that the cluster could now include as many as 150 people.

It is being seen in young adults with no previous health issues. It can be seen that these people are developing a series of symptoms, including rapid weight loss, insomnia, hallucinations, difficulty thinking and limited mobility. In a report by the Guardian, the source was quoted as saying, "I’m truly concerned about these cases because they seem to evolve so fast. I’m worried for them and we owe them some kind of explanation.”

Many symptoms suggest that environmental factors may have contributed to the disease. One suspected case included a man, who was developing symptoms of dementia and ataxia. It was then observed that his wife, who was also his caregiver, suddenly started losing her sleep and experiencing muscle wasting, dementia and hallucinations.

Another case witnessed sudden weight loss in a man as he dropped nearly 60 pounds. He also developed insomnia and began hallucinating. Brain imaging showed advanced signs of atrophy.

The whistleblower said, "This is not a New Brunswick disease. We’re probably the area that is raising the flag because we’re mostly rural and in an area where people might have more exposure to environmental factors.”

He further claimed that he decided to come forward because of growing concerns at the pace with which it has affected these young people.

Quebec’s health minister Christian Dube has said that they are left with “no choice” but to allow some essential workers to continue work despite testing COVID-19 positive to stave off a staff shortage from affecting its healthcare services due to the Omicron surge.

Canada’s Quebec province has been reporting massive Covid spikes as the highly contagious Omicron drives a new wave of infections.

On Tuesday, the French-speaking province reported 12,833 new coronavirus cases—the highest one-day count of any region in Canada during the pandemic.

Health authorities have warned that the actual number of infections may be higher as the screening centres are overwhelmed and the rapid testing kits being used at home could mean that some cases are not being reported.

Moreover, pandemic related hospitalisations have increased, putting the fragile health infra on the brink of a collapse.

“Omicron’s contagion is so exponential, that a huge number of personnel have to be withdrawn - and that poses a risk to the network capacity to treat Quebecers," Dube told reporters at a briefing on Tuesday.

“We made the decision that under a certain condition positive staff will be able to continue working according to a list of priority and risk management,” he said, adding that more information would be provided in the coming days.

Dube said Quebec would also offer a third dose of a Covid-19 vaccine to everyone above the age of 18 from Jan 4.

Last week, Quebec ordered bars, gyms and casinos to shut and directed people to work only from home. It also limited the size of gatherings at private homes and restaurants to six people.

Quebec, Canada's largest province, is due to enact a new severe French language law prohibiting the use of English in public services, in what some have dubbed a "culture war" against English-speakers.

The province of Quebec is one of Canada's thirteen provinces and territories.

It is the province with the most land area and the second-largest population.

Much of the population lives in urban regions along the St. Lawrence River, between the most populated city, Montreal, and the provincial capital, Quebec City.

Given the dominance of English in worldwide popular culture, the province's ruling nationalist party, the Coalition Avenir Quebec (CAQ), argues severe measures are "essential" for the survival of the French language.

However, residents of the province who speak English claim that Bill 96, which is set to take effect next year, discriminates against bilinguals and denies them essential liberties.

Using a procedure meant to safeguard it from constitutional challenges, the bill proposes to unilaterally modify the Canadian Constitution to establish Quebec as a nation and French as its official language.

The extreme measure proposes more than 200 amendments to the historic French language charter of 1977, including stricter language requirements for businesses and a cap on the number of Francophones who can attend Anglophone colleges.
