A former top Canadian intelligence official was sentenced Wednesday to 14 years in prison for sharing state secrets to criminal organizations, in one of the country's biggest leak scandals.

Cameron Ortis, 51, however, will only serve half that sentence after getting credit for pretrial detention.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Robert Maranger said the case was "without precedent" in Canada, marking the first conviction at trial under its Security of Information Act.

Ortis was director general of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) national intelligence coordination unit until his arrest in September 2019.

He was convicted late last year of using his position to access sensitive information from Canada and the powerful Five Eyes intelligence alliance -- which also includes Australia, the United States, Britain and New Zealand.

He then tried to sell the information to individuals linked to money laundering schemes for Canada-listed terrorist groups.

Maranger noted that Ortis, however, remains "somewhat of an enigma," as no evidence of his motive was presented at trial, nor did he personally profit from his actions.

Ortis himself declined an opportunity to speak to the court on Wednesday, and did not react when the sentence was handed down.

Outside the Ottawa courthouse, defense attorney Jon Doody -- who had sought at trial to paint Ortis as a patriot and a dedicated member of the&nbsp; RCMP who acted on a mysterious tip to confront a threat to the nation -- vowed to appeal both the conviction and sentence.

"He stands by his innocence," Doody told reporters.

Prosecutor Judy Kliewer, who had asked for a sentence of more than 22 years, called Ortis's actions "a serious betrayal" of the federal police and the intelligence community, and put "the security all Canadians in jeopardy."

The trial heard that Ortis received information about a national security threat and used intelligence to lure criminal targets into adopting an encrypted service set up to eavesdrop on their communications.

The stuffed bear that weighed approximately 500lb (225kg), and stood&nbsp;some 12ft (3.6m) tall, was reported to have been snatched amid the cold snap in early January as the temperatures reached near -30C (-22F).

As per the investigators, a "similar occurrence" was reported from&nbsp;the resort last August when it said two taxidermy raccoons were stolen during a break-in inside the property.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said that all three taxidermy animals will cost approximately C$35,000 (£21,000; $26,000).&nbsp;

"Their decision to continue to maintain market access barriers for our agriculture industry and unwillingness to reach a mutual agreement has only stalled negotiations," the official said.

Ng has "been in touch" with her British counterpart Kemi Badenoch "to express our disappointment," the official added.

The 66-year-old Lacroix, the archbishop of Quebec since 2011 and a cardinal since 2014, is facing claims of abuse dating back to 1987 and 1988, when the victim was 17, attorney Alain Arsenault, who is handling the suit, told AFP.

The legal action, an updated filing of a case first brought in 2022, features testimony from 147 people who claim they were sexually assaulted by more than 100 priests in the archdiocese, some of them high-ranking clergy, his law firm said in a statement.

The new filing reflects the addition of 46 victims, and names more than a dozen new suspects.

The archdiocese of Quebec did not immediately respond to AFP requests for comment.&nbsp;

In the original suit, cardinal Marc Ouellet was accused of sexually abusing a female intern from 2008 to 2010.&nbsp;

Ouellet, who persistently denied what he called "defamatory" allegations, resigned in January 2023 from his position at the Vatican due to his age.&nbsp;

Justice Richard Mosley ruled in the case brought forward by the Canadian Civil Liberties Association that invoking the Emergencies Act "was not justified", "was unreasonable and led to the infringement of Charter rights."

Meanwhile, search and rescue efforts for the aircraft were being coordinated by three Royal Canadian Air Force squadrons, said Maxime Cliche, a public affairs officer with the Canadian Armed Forces.&nbsp;

The aircraft was found near the Slave River, said Cliche. Northwestern Air, which operated the Jetstream twin turboprop airliner, as per AFP said that the charter flight crashed around 1.1 kilometres away from the end of the runway.&nbsp;

The accident has prompted officials to ground all flights from Fort Smith until Wednesday (Jan 24). Meanwhile, Canada’s Transportation Safety Board said they have deployed a team to investigate the accident, involving a BAE Jetstream aircraft.&nbsp;
