“India is talking the rhetoric of multipolarity, but what multipolarity are we talking about?,” questioned Dr Manish Dabhade, founder, The Indian Futures, a New Delhi based independent think tank. &nbsp;

"India is certainly contesting Chinese unipolarity in Asia and the Indo-Pacific. That's precisely why India opposes the BRICS currency; it's not inclined towards even regional trading currencies. There's also an economic rationale behind this stance,” he told WION. &nbsp;

Currently, over 50 per cent of all global transactions are conducted in US dollars, while the Chinese&nbsp;Renminbi (RMB) accounts for just 3-4 per cent, and at most, it might increase to 4-5 per cent, which is a marginal shift, he pointed out. “The notion propagated by BRICS that they are de-dollarising the global economy is unlikely to materialise, at least not in the next 10-20 years.”&nbsp;

India is speaking the language of multilateralism, but it has largely chosen its side. The broader trajectory is shifting towards a closer alignment with the West, encompassing the US, Europe, and France, added Dabhade. India has also been contesting all of China's unfair trade practices, including its withdrawal from RCEP and China's inundation of Indian markets with their goods. In the brief speech, Wentao denounced “countries obsessed with maintaining hegemony” for sabotaging the growth of developing nations, an effort he said is “futile”.

Quoting Xi, Wentao called for an end to one-dimensional views of states that divide them into artificial categories like “liberal” or “authoritarian”.

Though it was known that Putin won’t be coming to South Africa due to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court over war crimes in Ukraine, it was surprising that Xi did not turn up for the event.

So far, no reason has been provided for Xi’s absence, and the stoic silence from the officials has left much room for speculation.

<h2>Xi met&nbsp;Ramaphosa</h2>

Earlier in the day, Xi met with Ramaphosa ahead of the summit on just his second international trip of the year.

"Now as friends and&nbsp;BRICS&nbsp;partners, we stand together in our shared objective and quest for a better and more egalitarian world that frees the potential of all the people in the world," said Ramaphosa in Pretoria at the opening of Xi's state visit.

The prime minister, in a statement, said that this summit will provide a valuable opportunity for BRICS to determine prospective areas of cooperation and examine institutional development.

PM Modi is set to attend the 15th BRICS Summit at the invitation of the country's president Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, which is being held in Johannesburg from 22-24 August 2023.

This will be the Indian prime minister's third visit to South Africa and will also mark the 30th anniversary of the diplomatic relationship between India and South Africa.

PM Modi in his departure statement said, "I am visiting the Republic of South Africa from 22-24 August 2023 at the invitation of HE Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa, to attend the 15th BRICS Summit being held in Johannesburg under the South African Chairmanship."

"During my stay in Johannesburg, I will also participate in BRICS–Africa Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue event that will be held as part of the BRICS Summit activities," he added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will join the BRICS summit virtually while the country's delegation will be led by foreign minister Sergey Lavrov. He is also set to attend a special event with the theme “Brics – Africa outreach and Brics plus dialogue”.

This event is scheduled to take place after the BRICS Summit and will welcome dozens of countries, primarily from the African continent, invited by South Africa.

From South Africa, PM Modi will travel to Athens, Greece on Friday (August 25), at the invitation of the country's prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Earlier, the BRICS Bank had asserted its obligations towards Russia, who, reports suggest, continued to make payments to the NDB throughout the crisis. 
 
"Russia plays a significant role in the decision-making process and given its special role as a founding member, NDB intends to think about fulfilling its obligations vis-a-vis, in compliance with applicable restrictions introduced on financial capital," he told at an annual meeting in May 2023.
