The first day of the Adelaide game saw people in excess of 50,000—the fourth highest for any Test in Adelaide and the highest ever for the India vs. Australia Test in the City of Churches.

The first Test in Perth also saw around 96,000 people coming out for the contest, during which India orchestrated a win of the ages.

After winning the first Test by 295 runs, India lost the second one by 10 wickets, which makes the next two Tests pivotal towards the result of the series.

The next Test starts Saturday (Dec 14) in Brisbane's iconic Gabba stadium where India had created history on the last tour in 2020-21 by becoming the first team to beat Australia in 32 years.

India would be hoping for reprise the same kind of performance this time as well at the Gabba after the Adelaide hammering.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Boxing Day Test likely to set new record as unprecedented ticket sales expected

India wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul's century in the ongoing first Test against South Africa made him only the second Indian wicketkeeper to score a hundred in maiden Test with gloves duty. Before Rahul, Vijay Manjrekar had scored a hundred in his only Test as wicketkeeper, that is against West Indies in 1953 when he scored 118. Rahul is also only the second Indian wicketkeeper-batter to score a century in South Africa after Rishabh Pant.

Rahul, who scored 101 out of India's first innings total of 245, is also the only visiting batter to score two centuries at Centurion's SuperSport Park. His first century came on India's last tour of South Africa in 2021/22. In total, Rahul has scored 261 runs in five innings of three matches at the venue.

The batter also joined Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli in the list of batters with more than one Test hundred in South Africa. While Sachin has five Test hundreds in the country, both Kohli and Rahul have two each.

The century was Rahul's eighth in the red-ball cricket with six of them coming outside Asia - a testimony to his technique as a batter. In the last 15 years, only Kohli has scored more Test hundreds outside Asia among the Indians - 13 tons in 53 matches. Apart from these two, Ajinkya Rahane has also scored six hundreds outside Asia in 46 matches in the last decade and a half.

Before scoring a hundred in his maiden innings as a wicketkeeper in Tests, Rahul had also scored fifty-plus scores in ODIs and T20Is too. In ODIs, he scored 80 runs in 2020 against Australia and 56 against New Zealand in the same year.

Most recently, Rahul kept wickets for India in the ODI World Cup 2023 and was given the job for the Tests as India's first-choice wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant continues to recover from injuries sustained in a car crash in December 2022.

Mitchell Marsh hit a belligerent 96 on day 3 of the Boxing Day Test against touring Pakistan as Australia extended its lead to 241 runs with four wickets left. The hosts were reeling at 16/4 when Marsh joined the forces with Steve Smith and the duo added 153 runs for the fifth wicket at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

For Pakistan, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mir Hamza took three wickets each but the bowlers largely failed to capitalise on the strong position they were in. The Pak fielders also didn't help much as Abdullah Shafique dropped a regulation catch at the slips when Marsh was on 20.

The day ended with Steve Smith getting out in the last over of the day for an exact score of 50 with Alex Carey staying unbeaten on 16 runs and Australia on 187/6 . Pakistan will still fancy bowling out the home team for under 220 to chase a target of 275-odd runs.

Earlier, the day started with Pakistan continuing from their overnight score of 194/6 but could bat only for 18.5 overs, adding 70 more runs to their total. Mohammad Rizwan, who was unbeaten on 29, was the first wicket to fall off Aussie skipper Pat Cummins' bowling for a personal score of 43 and the team score of 215. Rizwan's overnight partner Aamer Jamal then added 25 runs with Afridi (21) before Nathan Lyon took him out.

Cummins then sent back Hasan Ali to complete his five-for while Lyon got Hamza stumped to wrap Pakistan's innings on 264. Jamal, meanwhile, remained unbeaten on 33 as Lyon took 4/73 and Josh Hazelwood took 1/43 apart from Cummins' five-for.

Australia had to bat for 15 minutes before lunch on day 3 but Afridi took two wickets including Usman Khawaja for a duck. Post lunch, Mir Hamza struck twice in two balls, sending David Warner and Travis Head back in the fifth over of the innings before Marsh-Smith rescue act.

Boxing Day Test: Australia ahead of Pakistan after Mitchell Marsh-Steve Smith rescue act on day 3

Right after lunch on day three (on Thursday) during the MCG Test between Australia and Pakistan, the play was halted for around six minutes because the third umpire - Richard Illingworth, got stuck in a lift and failed to return on time for the game to begin.

The players returned to the middle after lunch break for a scheduled 1:25 pm (local time) start. However, everyone waited as two on-field umpires didn’t allow the game to get underway because Illingworth couldn’t return to his position in the grandstand.

At that time, both batters David Warner and Steve Smith had to wait to resume batting, with Australia’s scorecard reading 6 for two.

Meanwhile, a few minutes later, the fourth umpire, Phil Gillespie, ran from the ground to the third umpire’s room for the game to start.

After the lift issue was resolved, Illingworth reached his place a few minutes later, giving everyone a light-hearted wave as he sat down.

Cummins picks five-for

Captain Pat Cummins was the star bowler for Australia in the first innings, picking a five-for, with Nathan Lyon returning with four for 73. Muhammad Rizwan hit 42, while handy contributions from the tail (33 from Aamer Jamal and 21 from Shaheen Afridi) helped Pakistan close the gap as they got all out for 264.

AUS v PAK: Play delayed after third umpire gets stuck in lift at MCG during Boxing Day Test

Former legends Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar couldn’t help but laud KL Rahul for his knock on day one of the Centurion Test.

After India lost three wickets under 30 inside the first ten overs, most fans feared the same outcome the team has suffered in SENA countries in such situations. That, however, was far from reality as the crisis man KL Rahul weathered the storm and held his innings and India’s position together on day one at the SuperSport Park in Centurion.

Having returned from a leg injury (he suffered during the IPL this year), KL has been India’s best bet in the middle overs since. From scoring a hundred during the home World Cup to standing tall against a potent attack on foreign soil in Tests, Rahul has delivered at every stage.

Right after lunch on day one of the Boxing Day Test, when India lost two settled batters - Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, to Rabada, Rahul bailed the team out with his different approach, something even former legends took note of and hailed.

“He has made batting look easy. When you look at his footwork and the balance, it was pretty amazing. The knock also shows that the number is right for him in Test match cricket. I think he will get a lot of runs for India in the middle order,” Shastri said during the commentary on day one.

Meanwhile, Gavaskar said, much like everyone, he was aware of Rahul’s potential. The former opener talked highly of the India batter returning from a lengthy layoff and delivering everything he has been asked to.

Gavaskar added, that KL’s fifty on day one on such a tricky Centurion track is as good as a century.

“We’ve known about his talent for such a long time, but we are getting to see it in the last eight, nine months, ever since he’s come back from this horrific injury that he had in the IPL, it’s a different Rahul. It’s a Rahul that we have been yearning to see for such a long time and such a delight to see. I said it in commentary as well that this half-century to me, is as good as a century,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

India captain and batting great Rohit Sharma admits that South Africa, of all touring countries, is the hardest place for the batters. Ahead of the Boxing Day Test at the SuperSport Park in Centurion, Rohit talked in detail about how crucial it is for India to win a series in the Rainbow Nation, given their position in world cricket, and what it could do to boost the nation’s morale following the World Cup final loss.

"It's a very important two Test matches in terms of where we stand as a team," Rohit Sharma told media ahead of the Boxing Day Test.

"To look back, we have never won a series here as well, that's a big opportunity in itself. We have come pretty close the last two times we toured here, and we come to this place with a lot of confidence trying to achieve what no one has ever achieved in this part of the world,” Rohit added.

Sharma has been part of the Test setup that found tremendous success in Australia and England in the past 5-7 years. Speaking on how fast bowling changed India’s dynamics as a touring team, Rohit admitted that their best pacer in Tests and perhaps on current form, Mohammed Shami’s absence will be felt.

"Our seamers have earned respect in how they have performed in overseas conditions," Rohit said.

"In the last 5-7 years in fact, we did very well in Australia and England, even in South Africa, we have come close. We won in Centurion and came pretty close in Jo’burg and Cape Town, and the seamers have pulled their weight.

"Shami will be a big miss. His experience and what he has done over the years will be a big miss. Someone will take his place, and it won't be an easy role, but we have a lot of confidence in the guys who might take his place,” the India captain noted.

Rohit aware of Proteas challenge

India might have found success in white-ball cricket in this part of the world lately, but the win column in Tests still reads empty. For India to alter that, they will need their batters to weather the South African pace-attack storm and stand tall.

On the batting conditions in South Africa, Rohit said, "As a batter it's always a challenge to come and perform in South Africa, which is probably the hardest place to play for batsmen.

"I look forward to that challenge. Unfortunately I couldn't be here last time, but I'm looking forward to doing what is required from my side as a batter and see where it takes us."

"At some point, you have to start your career playing in these kind of conditions, so speaking to the people who have not been here before, they're excited and looking forward to the challenge,” he concluded.

Australia finish marginally ahead of Pakistan on rain-hit Day One of Boxing Day Test

Team India’s practice session was halted at the SuperSport Park in Centurion with persistent rains on Monday, a day before the Boxing Day Test start. Per the pitch curator, Brain Bloy, the rain was forecasted for consecutive days in the lead-up to the match, with chances of the first two days getting washed out.

“I don’t know what conditions will be like, whether we will get play on Day 1,” Brian said while predicting the cold weather for the first Test.

“You are seeing a forecast on Day 1 and Day 2. It doesn’t look very good. The sun is out for four days and, so there will be some purchases for spinners, offer turn and bounce; with the weather forecast, I don’t know how accurate it will be as there will be a lot of rain,” Bloy had told PTI on Saturday.

Rain threat looms over Boxing Day Test in Centurion as India eye historic win in South Africa

Pakistan suffered another blow on their ongoing tour of Australia when veteran spinner Noman Ali was hospitalised Friday (Dec. 22). The 37-year-old was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and has been ruled out of the remainder of the Test series. The bowler, however, is recovering from illness after going under surgery, informed the Pakistan Cricket Board.

"Noman Ali complained of sudden and severe abdominal pain yesterday, leading to examinations and scans in emergency that confirmed a diagnosis of acute appendicitis," the Pakistan Cricket Board said.

"On surgeon's advice, he underwent Laparoscopic Appendectomy today (Dec. 23)," the board added.

The medical situation puts Pakistan bowling attack under more pressure after debutant pacer Khurram Shahzad, who impressed with five wickets in the first Test, was also ruled out with an injury. Shahzad took 5/128 in Pakistan's 360-run loss in Perth but complained about discomfort and pain after the match.

Pakistan are already playing with a depleted pace attack with frontline pacers Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf not being part of the squad. While Shah was ruled out due to long-term injury he suffered during the Asia Cup earlier this year, Rauf was embroiled into much drama after opting out of the series.

Apart from them, spinner Abrar Ahmed also didn't take part in the first Test due to leg discomfort but could join the team for the second Test which starts on Boxing Day (Dec. 26) in Melbourne.

The tour of Australia is Pakistan's first international assignment after the ODI World Cup 2023 where they failed to make it to the semis. In the aftermath of the quadrennial tournament, Babar Azam was removed from the captaincy from all formats.

Shan Masood took over Babar in Tests while pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi has been given the skipper's role for the T20Is.

Pakistan spinner Noman Ali hospitalised in Australia, ruled out of ongoing Test series

Former Pakistan cricket team captain Waqar Younis has raised questions on the team’s pace attack as they aim to bounce back in the three-match Test series against Australia. After a humiliating defeat against the Aussies in Perth, Pakistan needed to go back to the drawing board as they set their sight on the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). They suffered another dent in their preparations for the MCG Test with pace bowler Khurram Shahzad out with a rib injury.

Waqar concerned for Pakistan's pace attack

"The thing that I'm worried about is that always when we come to Australia, one thing that excites is the fast bowling and this time around I'm not seeing that. I'm seeing medium-pacers or slow-medium-pacers, allrounders, there's no real pace. People used to come and watch Pakistan pace bowlers really running in hard and bowling 150 clicks [kph], and that's what I'm not seeing there,” he said on ESPN's Around The Wicket show.

The 52-year-old also spoke on Shaheen Shah Afridi’s poor run with two wickets for 172 runs. According to Waqar, he should make necessary changes to his game plan while emphasising to even take time out if he is not fit.

"I'm not really sure what's wrong with him. If he's not fit, if he's got some issues, he needs to take a break from the game and fix that because if you are going to carry on like that you are going to become a medium-pacer. He used to bowl 145-150kph and used to swing that ball. What I'm seeing now, yes there's a little bit of swing but his pace is way down… and that is not going to get him wickets,” added the former Pakistan coach.

Shan Masood’s Pakistan will now have a tough task in hand if they are to make a comeback in the series. The 360-run defeat in Perth has seen Pakistan trail by 1-0 in the three-match series. The Boxing Day Test will be a big litmus test for the visitors considering a defeat could see them lose the Test series with the World Test Championship (WTC) qualification also on the agenda.

AUS vs PAK: Waqar Younis concerned for Pakistan’s pace attack ahead of Boxing Day affair at MCG

Pakistan Cricket Team has been dealt another blow ahead of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, as seamer Khurram Shahzad is doubtful for the second Test. During the first match in Perth, Khurram complained of discomfort in his left side and now is sent for scans, the results of which will come by Thursday.

Among the two new bowlers included for this Test series, Khurram was on point with his tight line and length during the second innings in Perth, returning with three for 45 from his 16 overs. Though he is not an outright express bowler, Khurram accounted for veteran Steve Smith in both innings.

With his fellow debutant Aamer Jamal entering record books with a six-wicket haul in the first innings, Khurram was the one to get more sideways movement through the air outside among the pace attack. Being the most economical of all during the Test, Khurram’s control over the seaming bowl impressed everyone.

Absence of star bowlers

Meanwhile, with Pakistan already without their star cricketer Naseem Shah, out with a shoulder injury and Abrar Ahmad, out with an injured knee, the absence of Khurram Shahzad would hurt their chances of returning to this three-match series.

AUS vs PAK: Blow to Pakistan as seamer Khurram Shahzad doubtful for Melbourne Test

Australia dominated the proceedings on Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test match versus South Africa on Tuesday (Decemebr 27) at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Melbourne. Riding on David Warner's double ton -- who is playing his 100th Test -- the home side are in a commanding position at stumps; well-placed at 386 for 3 with an overall lead of 197 runs.

Coming into this Test match on the back of severe criticism due to his poor form in whites, Warner silenced his critics in style. He reached his double ton in 254 balls and his inning was laced with 16 fours and two maximums. Warner celebrated wildly and carried out his trademark jump after slamming his third double ton in the format. However, his celebrations were short-lived as the swashbuckling opener got injured and eventually had to retire hurt. He was struggling with cramps and aggrevated his pain while celebrating, leading to his exit. Here's the video of his celebrations:

Talking about Warner's knock, he stitched an impressive 239-run third-wicket stand with Steve Smith (85) to take Australia way ahead of the Proteas in the contest. He became the first Australian to slam a double in his 100th Test before walking out with update being that he was dehydrated. He also became only the second player overall, after England's Joe Root, to score a double hundred in his 100th match in the purest format.

He also became only the second player overall, after England's Joe Root, to score a double hundred in his 100th match in the purest format. On Day 3, Australia will like to continue their dominance over the Dean Elgar-led SA line-up and propel the lead past the 300-run mark to dictate terms in the remaining part of the second and penultimate Test. Pat Cummins & Co. already have a 1-0 lead in the series after winning the first Test by six wickets at The Gabba, Brisbane.

David Warner injured while celebrating wildly after slamming 200 vs SA in MCG Test, gets retired hurt - WATCH

Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test match between Australia and South Africa, at the MCG, has been dominated by David Warner. After the hosts bundled out the Proteas for a paltry 189, with Cameron Green shining with a five-fer, and were 45 for 1 at stumps on the opening day, Warner came out all guns blazing on Tuesday (December 27) and smacked a memorable 200 -- in his 100th Test -- and took the home side to a daunting position courtesy of an impressive 239-run third-wicket stand with Steve Smith (85). Australia are already coasting towards a big lead in the contest with seven wickets in hand.

While Warner made the headlines with his knock, the Spider camera also made heads turn with a bizarre incident taking place. While fielding at backward square leg, South African pacer Anrich Nortje suffered a bizarre collision with the spider cam. The equipment, which hovers over the fielders in a bid to provide a 360-degree view of the ground, collided with the speedster and it seemed like a huge blow as Nortje lay on the ground for quite some time. As a result, players from both the camps ran towards him and checked on him. Nortje laid on the ground for some time before getting up and escaping a serious injury. Here's the viral video:

Celebrated a day after Christmas, Boxing day, despite what the name suggests has nothing to do with the sport. The holiday which began as a day to give gifts to the poor is now celebrated as a ‘shopping holiday’.

It became official in 1871 and was traditionally recognised on December 26. However, if that day falls on a Saturday, the celebration moves to the following Monday and if the date falls on a Sunday, the holiday is celebrated on the following Tuesday.

Boxing day originally began in the United Kingdom and supposedly got its name during Queen Victoria’s reign and is now celebrated in several countries across Europe as well as countries and former British colonies, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, and so on. The day is also marked by a bank holiday or a public holiday in these countries with stores offering Boxing Day sales which are often compared to the United States’ Black Friday sale.

History

There are several theories surrounding the celebration and origins of Boxing day, one of which includes it being a day off for servants where they would receive a gift from their employers and take these Christmas boxes to their families. These boxes would consist of gifts, bonuses, as well as leftovers from the meals, served on Christmas.

Therefore, in this context, the name ‘boxing day’ refers to the Christmas boxes given to those in need a day after Christmas. Meanwhile, in countries like European countries like Ireland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, Finland, and so on, December 26 is also celebrated as St. Stephen's Day, to commemorate the first Christian martyr, known for his service to the poor and was stoned to death in AD 36.

What do people do on this day?

Some people celebrate this day with family and friends while others gather for leftover meals and spend their day off relaxing. While others shop in record numbers taking advantage of low prices.

Boxing day is somewhat related to sports as on this day, Boxing day Test takes place in Australia, a cricket match played between the Australian team and any country which is on tour in the country at the time, starting from December 26. They are hosted by the country’s iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Victoria.

Additionally, there are several other sporting events held on Boxing day, which include football and rugby games in the UK and cricket matches in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

Boxing Day 2022 sales in UK and Australia

In the UK as the country faces the highest inflation in decades and a cost of living crisis, a survey by Barclaycard Payments, found that shoppers are expected to spend four per cent less this Boxing Day when compared to last year. Reportedly, a person is expected to spend at least 229 pounds ($276.2) this year which is 18 pounds ($21.7) less than in 2021.

Harshna Cayley, head of online payments at the credit card company while attributing the estimated low sales to the cost of living crisis and inflation also said, “retailers can take confidence knowing that shoppers still plan to make the most of the deals and discounts on offer.”

The survey also estimates that at least 28 per cent of people may use re-selling platforms like eBay and Facebook Marketplace to get rid of some unwanted Christmas presents. Meanwhile, research by GlobalData for Vouchercodes, estimates that spending on Boxing day will hit almost 3.8 billion pounds ($4.6 billion) which is also four per cent lesser than last year.

Notably, while the volume of items bought will be less given that the inflation in the country is more than 10 per cent shoppers will spend more per purchase.

On the other hand, reports suggest Australians are expected to spend a whopping AU$ 23.5 billion (US$ 15.78 billion) this Boxing day as they celebrate their first COVID-19 restrictions-free sale since 2020.

According to the data from the Australian Retail Association (ARA), the sales period is expected to see a 7.9 per cent increase since last year, with shoppers across major cities like Melbourne and Sydney more enthusiastic about spending than in previous years.

Meanwhile, ARA chief executive, Paul Zahra, also highlighted the change in shopping trends with less number of shoppers in-store when compared to previous years as more and more people are opting for online shopping. He also noted that consumers might witness big savings from clothing which he has attributed to an “unseasonably cool summer”.

What is Boxing day and how is it celebrated? All you need to know

India demolished South Africa on Day 5 of the first Test at SuperSport Park, Centurion on Thursday (December 30) to end the calendar year on a high. The year saw Virat Kohli-led Team India win as many as four Tests in SENA countries, in Brisbane, Lord's, The Oval and Centurion.

Resuming the fifth and final day with Proteas reeling at 94-4, India needed six more wickets to win while defending a competitive 305. Proteas skipper Dean Elgar (77) showed some resistance and the limited-overs captain Temba Bavuma (35 not out) also looked good before the Indian bowlers wrapped up proceedings in style on the final day's second session. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami took three wickets each whereas Mohammed Siraj and R Ashwin claimed two scalps apiece. With this win, India achieved their fourth victory in the purest format in the African nation with two of them coming under Kohli (in a row).

While Kohli didn't have a great run with the bat, the 33-year-old had a memorable Test as captain by achieving a plethora of records with India's 113-run win in Centurion. The superstar cricketer led India to their maiden Test win at the venue. Before this, India had won a Test in Durban and twice in Johannesburg. He also became the first Asian skipper to win a Test at SA's fortress, i.e. the SuperSpork Park, Centurion (where they were unbeaten since 2014).

In addition, Kohli is now the only Asian captain to lead his side to two Boxing Day Test victories. Earlier, he had led India to victory in the 2018/19 Boxing Day encounter versus Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground, MCG.

Kohli is also now the first Indian captain to have two wins in the rainbow nation. If India go onto win the second or the third Test in the ongoing series, he will also become the first Indian captain to lead the side to a Test series triumph in the African nation.

After the win, the most proud achievement for Kohli is that he is now the only captain to lead India to 4 Test wins outside Asia in a year twice. Earlier, he had achieved this feat in 2018.

Winning the toss, batting first overseas is a tough challenge. Credit to Mayank and KL the way they set it up. We knew we were in pole position with anything over 300-320. Knew the bowlers will do the job. Spoke about it in the change room - the fact he didn't bowl much in the first innings, it allowed SA to get around 40 more runs (Bumrah)." India's strength and conditioning coach, Soham Desai, said that after three days of hard quarantine in Mumbai, starting a skill session right away would have been "high risk", which is why the team had an easy session on Friday evening.

"We have had three days of hard quarantine in Mumbai and we've had 10 hours of long flight and yesterday (Thursday) was again a hard quarantine day here, so starting out (a) skill session straightaway would have been a high-risk thing for the guys. So, today evening (Friday), we went for a run, we got together stretched out, sweated out? this game (footvolley) is going to help them bridge the gap between inactivity and the skills (sessions) from tomorrow (Saturday)," said Desai.

Desai said his biggest task would be to help the players adjust to the Johannesburg altitude. The team had been quarantined in Mumbai at sea level, while Johannesburg was at an altitude of 1400 metres.

"Also the schedule is such that we have to get going right away and we can do only so much to adjust to the elevation here, which is 1400 metres and we are coming from sea level, so the guys are going to take 2-3 days to adapt to that," he said.

"This game (footvolley) can be called the Indian team game because? meaning? we give them options to play many other games but they end up choosing foot volley and they enjoy it, they love it? they have their own battles within the team going on for years now.

"This game, the laughter, and banter are ways to eliminate all those things which are creeping in their minds time away from home and the best way I can think of that helps them to focus on the game and stay in a happy space (sic)," he added.

India tour of South Africa: CSA shares updated schedule, series to kick-off with Boxing Day Test in Centurion

After the Victorian government confirmed that all COVID-19 limitations would be waived, a full capacity crowd is expected for the Boxing Day Test between England and Australia.

After the state met its immunisation objectives, the decision was made. Cricket Australia said in June that tickets for the MCG would be sold to 85 percent of capacity, while all other venues will be sold to full capacity.

With the Victoria government loosening the requirements, more tickets may become available for the traditional Test match, which has drawn some of Australia's largest audiences in recent years.

Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews also stated that there will be no restrictions on how many people may enter the MCG on Boxing Day. "There are no more caps, there are no more quotients, no more rules in terms of how many people can be in different spaces," Andrews said, according to ESPNcricinfo.

MCG can hold up to 100,000 people at a time. The highest participation so far has been 91,112 in the 2013 Boxing day test. Last time it had around eighty-six thousand people in India vs Australia Women's T20 World Cup, March 2020. Even last year India vs Australia Boxing Day Test was capped at thirty thousand people per day due to COVID-19 restrictions.

"Whether it's 100000 at the MCG on Boxing Day or a smaller group standing up at the public bar of their local pub having a beer, this is the COVID normal that every Victorian has built," he added.

Andrews also assured that if any further changes regarding the Boxing Day Test would be made, fans will get full refunds.

"In the event that capacities are reduced due to government restrictions associated with the pandemic, we of course guarantee fans full refunds."

People who want to enter the MCG for the Boxing Day Test must be fully vaccinated. The five-match Ashes series is set to begin on December 8 at Brisbane's Gabba.

Ashes: 100 per cent crowd capacity likely for Boxing Day Test

Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews sounded confident of 80,000-plus fans attending the Boxing Day Test, the third Test of the 2021/22 Ashes series, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground at the end of the year. The hope came after the Victoria government announced an easing of lockdown curbs caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in the coming months.

"I want to see 80,000-plus people at the Boxing Day Test on Day One. That is what I want to see. And we are determined to deliver that. It won`t be easy, I think selling the tickets will be pretty easy. But we are very confident, very, very confident that we will be able to deliver that," Andrews said during a press conference on Sunday.

If a large number of crowds attend the first day of this year`s Boxing Day Test, then it will be the biggest attendance at a sporting event in Australia since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Last year, only 30,000 spectators per day were allowed to attend the Boxing Day Test against India at the MCG.

In June this year, Cricket Australia (CA) announced they would sell tickets of the Ashes to full capacity, barring the MCG, for which ticket sales were capped at 85 percent of capacity, pending government restrictions.

"We continue to work closely with venues and governments across Australia to ensure that events are held safely and greatly appreciate their support. Meanwhile, Christina Matthews, the CEO of Western Australia Cricket, has not given up on the hope of Optus Stadium in Perth hosting the final Ashes Test. There are still doubts over Perth hosting the final Ashes Test as`the state`s borders are closed to people coming from Victoria and New South Wales.

Ashes: Victoria Premier 'confident' of 80,000-plus fans attending Boxing Day Test

A spectator at Australia's showpiece Boxing Day Test against India has tested positive for coronavirus, authorities said Wednesday, warning fans seated nearby that they must get tested and isolate.

State health authorities said the man in his thirties was not infectious while at the famed Melbourne Cricket Ground on the second day of play "but there is potential he acquired the virus while there" or at a nearby shopping centre.

"The MCG is being investigated as a potential source for the infection," Victoria's Department of Health said.

"We're encouraging anyone who was in The Great Southern Stand, zone 5 of the MCG between 12.30pm and 3.30pm on 27 December, to get tested and isolate until they receive a negative result."

The Boxing Day Test is a centrepiece of Australia's sporting calendar and just under 30,000 people attended this year, well short of capacity.

Despite having been largely free of Covid-19, Australia is currently battling to bring a cluster of cases under control and hoping aggressive testing and contact tracing can help avoid full-scale lockdowns.

The news comes on the eve of the third Test between Australia and India, which has caused some controversy by being played in Sydney, the epicentre of a recent outbreak.

The number of spectators has been restricted to 25 percent of seating capacity in order to make sure it does not become a mass spreading event.

Authorities in New South Wales said the revelation from Melbourne was "obviously influencing our thinking" about how the Sydney Test would proceed, without elaborating.

India's tour Down Under has been beset with Covid-19 related problems.

Five players were criticised for seemingly breaching the team's biosecurity bubble by going out to a restaurant.

And there are still questions about whether the two teams will have to quarantine before the final Test in Brisbane next week.

Australia-India Boxing Day Test declared possible Covid hotspot

New Zealand beat Pakistan by 101 runs on Wednesday after a thrilling finish to the first Test in Mount Maunganui, where the visitors were just 27 balls from pulling off a battling draw.

Tail-enders Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah blocked for seven overs in fading light before Naseem was caught and bowled by spinner Mitchell Santner for one, ending Pakistan's resistance.

The end for Pakistan had begun when Kyle Jamieson, celebrating his 26th birthday, broke the 165-run fifth-wicket stand by Fawad Alam and Mohammad Rizwan.

The victory was crucial for New Zealand, who need to sweep the two-Test series to have a chance of making the World Test Championship final at Lord's in June.

Once Jamieson claimed the crucial wicket of Rizwan, lbw for 60, Neil Wagner -- bowling despite breaking two toes while batting -- removed Alam for 102 and New Zealand were into the tail as Pakistan folded from 240 for four to be all out for 271.

Jamieson produced a particularly miserly spell after the tea break when he sent down nine overs and took two for four.

Apart from when Pakistan whipped out the New Zealand openers cheaply on day one, the match had been in New Zealand's control until Rizwan, the stand-in skipper, joined Alam in the middle with Pakistan 75 for four on the final morning.

New Zealand required six more wickets, Pakistan needed 298 runs and more than 78 overs remained.

By tea, Alam and Rizwan were still together, Pakistan had narrowed the target to 158 in 36 overs and New Zealand still needed six wickets.

But Jamieson removed Rizwan 11 overs into the final session.

Jamieson had gone close several times previously, and even his lbw shout against Rizwan was turned down before the umpire's decision was overturned on review.

Alam, who had occupied the crease with Rizwan for more than 63 overs, lasted three more overs until he gloved a Wagner short ball to wicketkeeper BJ Watling down the leg side.

Alam had been discarded by Pakistan in 2009 after three Tests and a best innings of 168, and since his recall this year his highest score was 21 against England in August.

There were a few loose shots early in his innings and a nerve-wracking moment when a ball ricocheted off his arm and bounced dangerously close to the stumps.

Otherwise, he staunchly held his own through 269 deliveries before bringing up his century with a four off Wagner, but scored only two more runs off his next 33 balls before his dismissal.

New Zealand's frontline pace bowlers Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Wagner, Jamieson and Santner each took two wickets.

New Zealand end Pakistan defiance for thrilling Test win

India completed a memorable triumph in Melbourne as the visitors defeated Australia by eight wickets to equalise the four-match Test series 1-1. While there is still a sense of jubilation among fans, the captain of the Indian cricket team Ajinkya Rahane on Wednesday posted a heartfelt letter for all the fans for the support they have received after winning the Boxing Day Test.

Rahane, who is leading the Indian side in the absence of Virat Kohli, expressed his gratitude for all the love and support coming towards the Indian cricket team. 'The biggest reward for us...' - Ajinkya Rahane posts heartfelt message for fans after MCG triumph

It was a great game for the Indians who have completed a huge turnaround without their skipper Virat Kohli with an emphatic win in Melbourne.

This was a comprehensive performance from the Indian cricket team to bring this series level at 1-1 with two matches remaining. A heck of a comeback following calamity in Adelaide.

Newcomer Shubman Gill showed plenty of class to finish with 35 from 36 balls in the second innings and looks a player with a huge future and Ajinkya Rahane was at the crease after setting up the win with his gutsy first innings hundred as Kohli's captaincy replacement.

Earlier, India wrapped up Australia's second innings for 200 in the extended opening session of the Day 4 of the second Test to set themselves an easy 70-run target, at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) today.

For India, debutant pacer Mohammed Siraj (3/37) took three wickets while Jasprit Bumrah (2/54) and Ravindra Jadeja (2/28) and Ravichandran Ashwin (2/71) took two wickets apiece in the second innings.

India had taken a 131-run lead on the third day with skipper Ajinkya Rahane (112) and Ravindra Jadeja (57) taking the visitors to 326 in reply to Australia's first innings total of 195.

Number six Cameron Green was top-scorer for the hosts with his 45-run knock while make-shift opener Matthew Wade made 40.

Green and Pat Cummins (22) added 57 runs for the seventh wicket with the pitch offering nothing to the bowlers. The partnership was broken only after the new ball was taken.

Australia have been fined 40 per cent of their match fee and penalised four ICC World Test Championship points for maintaining a slow over-rate against India in the second Test that ended in Melbourne on Tuesday.

David Boon of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Tim Paine’s side was ruled to be two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

Jadeja, along with Indian fielders desperately appealed to the umpire but Paine was given not-out. Indian skipper Ajinkya Rahane immediately took the DRS as everyone thought the ball had clipped the edge of Paine’s willow.

The third umpire first checked the Hot-Spot which showed no edge on Paine’s bat but the Snick-o-Meter showed a slight spike as the ball went past Paine’s bat. Despite the confusion, the third umpire decided to give Paine out.

Paine walked back to the pavilion in disbelief as the third umpire found a 'dull' spike on the snickometer was enough to overturn the on-field call and give the Australia captain out while commentators pondered if it was made by the batter's front foot-dragging on the pitch.

Rahane, whose captaincy has been praised heavily by the pundits and former cricketers, said that leading a side is all about backing your instincts and going with gut feeling.

“Captaincy is all about backing your instinct. You’ve got to back your gut feeling. Credit to the bowlers, they bowled in the right areas. (On his knock) It was really special. Getting a century always is. Still feel that my hundred against England at Lord’s is my best. This game is not over yet, still have to get four more wickets. (On the run out) I initially thought I was in. I told him (Jadeja) not to worry about my run out and to do keep doing well,” said Rahane after the end of Day 3 in Melbourne.
