Plenty happened on day two of the fourth BGT Test between Australia and India at the iconic MCG. While Steve Smith put Australia ahead with his record 34th Test hundred, second in two Tests and 11th against India in this format, what unfolded in the last 20 minutes of play further dent India&rsquo;s chances of taking a lead in this five-match series.
A horrific mix-up between Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal, leading to the latter&rsquo;s dismissal on 82, Virat edging one to the keeper off Scott Boland and Mitchell Starc sending nightwatchman Akash Deep back on zero, all happened in the space of four overs, reducing India from 153 for two to 159 for five.

That passage of play, however, blew Team India&rsquo;s momentum, which they gained with the 102-run stand between Kohli and Jaiswal earlier.
<h2>Kohli-Jaiswal mix up</h2>
On the last ball of the 41st over, Jaiswal played one towards the mid-on off Boland and ran immediately. Instead of trusting his partner&rsquo;s call and going for the single, Kohli, upon looking back, realised Jaiswal had taken a risk by going for it; Kohli held his ground, leaving Jaiswal nowhere to go after he almost reached the non-striker&rsquo;s end.&nbsp;

That led to a massive mix-up with Pat Cummins and Alex Carey accounting for Jaiswal's run-out, which later triggered a mini-collapse.
<h3>Blame game continues</h3>
Stunned by Kohli&rsquo;s decision not to complete the run, the commentators, mainly Sanjay Manjrekar, came down hard on the Indian veteran for his mistake before he got into a heated argument with his fellow broadcaster and ex-India star Irfan Pathan in the Star Sports&rsquo; post-match show.
While Manjrekar stuck to his point of Kohli being the culprit in this situation, Pathan jumped onto defending the former India captain, saying Kohli was at risk of getting run out at the striker&rsquo;s end, leaving Manjrekar furious over the whole argument.
"Ball was going slow, I don't think Kohli would've been run out. It was Jaiswal's call. Maybe a risky run, but he was at the danger end, not Kohli. It was a schoolboy error from Virat that he looked back and decided it wasn't a run. If it was a bad call from Jaiswal, he would've gotten out at the non-striker's end," Manjrekar said on the Star Sports show.
After Pathan defended his point on how Jaiswal was wrong in calling it in the first go, Sanjay said, "If you don't want to let me talk, it's alright".
Manjrekar further lost his cool after Pathan continued to press his opinion, replying, "Irfan Pathan's new interpretation of whether it is a run or not, should be added to the coaching manual."
The former Mumbai batter didn&rsquo;t stop there, continuing to talk about how the &lsquo;guilt&rsquo; of Jaiswal&rsquo;s run out led to Kohli&rsquo;s dismissal.
"Kohli's dismissal probably also down to the guilt he had inside his heart over Jaiswal's run-out. He was leaving outside-off deliveries until then but lost his concentration after the run-out incident," he noted.
Meanwhile, in reply to Australia&rsquo;s 474 in the first innings, India scored 164 for five at stumps on day two, trailing behind by 310 runs.&nbsp;

BGT: Manjrekar, Pathan argue over Jaiswal’s run out on day 2 at MCG

Former India coach Ravi Shastri has thrown his weight behind star batter Virat Kohli, who has been coping with severe criticism over his 'shoulder bump' to Aussie teenager Sam Konstas on day one of the MCG Test. Though the ICC fined him 20 per cent of his match fees as punishment, with a few former cricketers calling it an escape, Shastri slammed the Australian media for being desperate to target Kohli.
At a time when debutant Konstas made the right noises with his impressive stroke play early on day one, Kohli jammed his shoulder into the youngster&rsquo;s while crossing paths, leading to an altercation.
The umpires and even Usman Khawaja intervened and separated them.
The ICC noted Kohli&rsquo;s action, later punishing him for breaching its code of conduct.

Melbourne: The ICC fined Virat Kohli 20 per cent of his match fees for deliberately shouldering Australian teenager Sam Konstas on day one of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, but former Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting feels it was not harsh enough. Calling out the instance from the commentary box, Ponting expressed disappointment ahead of day two with how Kohli got away with a minute punishment, claiming 'it's different for some people'.
"Personally, I do not think it [the punishment] was harsh enough. I know there are precedents [where similar infringements have incurred similar-sized penalties] - they have generally been between a 15 and 25 per cent fine, but let us have a think about the enormity of yesterday,&rdquo; Ponting said while speaking on 7 Cricket ahead of day two.
After Australia elected to bat first at the MCG, Konstas, who had replaced McSweeney and was making his Test debut, smoked Indian ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah for 18 runs in his fourth over, including hitting him a six off a reverse scoop.
His stroke play impressed everyone except Virat, who bumped into Konstas after the end of the 10th over, leading to a confrontation.

Though there were a few close calls favouring the Aussies, Bumrah returned to pick his 25th wicket of the series by removing Lyon trapped in the front. India lose its captain early Rohit Sharma’s dismal run with the bat continues as he departed on just three to his counterpart Cummins in his first over. Rohit failed to make a mark despite returning to the top, where he usually bats across formats. Cummins bowled a good length delivery, which did a bit of the surface, catching Rohit off guard as he top-edged one for Boland to grab it successfully. BGT 2024/25: Ravi Shastri in awe of Aussie debutant Sam Konstas, says 'he tore that MCC coaching manual'

Sam Konstas has emerged on the international cricket scene with his bumper Boxing Day Test debut against India. On day one of the fourth BGT Test at the iconic MCG, in front of over 87000 fans, the rookie batter did something no other cricketer had done before, reverse scooping Jasprit Bumrah for a six. He also hit 18 runs off Bumrah&rsquo;s fourth over &ndash; the most he conceded in six balls in his decorated Test career thus far.
Having failed to get going against Bumrah earlier in the innings, Konstas found his touch in the seventh over, hitting Bumrah for a six off a reverse scoop before hitting him for a couple of boundaries later in the same over.

What brought everyone&rsquo;s attention to him was his sheer audacity to perhaps hit the best Test bowler right now, Bumrah, who attained the highest ranking for an Indian pacer ever (904), for boundaries for fun. Detailing on facing Bumrah at the &lsquo;G&rsquo;, Konstas said he wanted to put the pressure back on him, a punt that paid off.
"I think it probably will look silly if I did get out," Konstas said after the first day&rsquo;s play at MCG. "But I've worked pretty hard on that shot, and I feel like it's probably a safe shot for me really. But I think that's the beauty about being young and maybe a bit naive. I'm just trying to put pressure back on the bowler in the best way I think is, and it was good to get a few runs today."
<h2>Looking at the ball and not bowler</h2>
Bumrah has had the better of Nathan McSweeney (who got replaced by Konstas) and Usman Khawaja mostly during three concluded BGT Tests; Australia needed someone brave to weather his storm and score runs against him. Walk in Sam, who scored 34 runs against the ace pacer &ndash; the most by any batter against him in a single spell (in Tests).
"I think I was just getting used to the wicket, first time facing him, getting used to his action," Konstas said. "Obviously, he beat my bat quite a few times, and [I] was lucky enough to get a few away. But it was a great contest."
"He's a legend of the game, obviously, so I was trying to put a bit of pressure on him, and it paid off today. But obviously, he took three wickets, and he changed the momentum. But, I think, I'm always challenging myself, trying to bring the best out of myself; so just getting that contest with him and trying to take his lines away,&rdquo; Konstas continued.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, Sam scored 60 on his maiden outing before Ravindra Jadeja accounted for his dismissal by trapping him in front of the wickets.
At stumps on day one, Australia&rsquo;s scorecard read 311 for six.&nbsp;

<h3>Smith nears massive milestone</h3>
For what he brings to the table in this format with an average of over 56 (56.44), Smith is perhaps the best Test batter of the past decade. His accolades speak for himself, and even though his reflexes seem to catch up with time, he stands tall as one of the best in his country.

They made two changes to their playing XI, bringing in Scott Boland for injured Josh Hazlewood and replacing Nathan McSweeney with uncapped Sam Konstas. Konstas and Usman Khawaja shared an 89-run stand for the first wicket, with the newcomer making headlines for his impressive start to his Test career (scoring 60) and an uncalled-for mid-pitch altercation with India great Virat Kohli. Usman Khawaja and the umpires had to intervene to separate them, with the commentators expressing concern about Kohli facing a potential fine or punishment for this uncalled-for mid-pitch instance. Ricky Ponting, the former Aussie great and fierce competitor, noted that Kohli deliberately charged towards Konstas, instigating the confrontation.

Melbourne, Australia
Former coach Ravi Shastri has backed India to win the Boxing Day Test, saying the visitors have exploited Australia's "brittle" top order to have their "nose ahead" in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Shastri added that Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is "almost single-handedly" responsible for the visitors keeping the series levelled at 1-1.

"I think India would take this, the way the series is poised. Any overseas team being 1-1, especially with the games being in Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane, they would take this.
"Going 1-1 into Boxing Day is the best case scenario. I would say India have their nose ahead," Shastri told news.Com.Au.
Australia's top order comprising Usman Khawaja, Nathan McSweeney and Marnus Labuschagne have been unable to score against Bumrah.
It has have forced them to hand a debut to teenage sensation Sam Konstas while dropping rookie opener Nathan McSweeney.
"It's been pretty brittle. When you look at this Australian line-up, it's been a long time since I've seen an Australian line-up where the top order is that brittle. India have exploited that and continue to exploit it,” Shastri said.
All-rounder Mitchell Marsh has also largely struggled for runs. In the last year, Labuschagne, Marsh, Khawaja and Steve Smith all had average less than 30 in Test cricket.
"India is 1-1 in the series and that man (Bumrah) has almost single-handedly got India into that position,” Shastri said.
"As far as Konstas goes, I think he's very refreshing. He's got flair, he's got flamboyance. But Test cricket is Test cricket. His technique will tighten up and he will be the future for Australia." Shastri feels McSweeney was unfortunate to have been axed after just three Tests.
"McSweeney was very unfortunate. He did the hard yards but he's a middle order batsman. I see him travelling to Sri Lanka when the Australian team go there and rebuild his career from there.
"But I think it's a good move getting Konstas in because you need someone who can take the attack to the Indian team, because the punches were coming from nowhere."
India have won the last two series in Australia and now have the opportunity to become only the third touring side to win three consecutive series Down Under, joining the West Indies (1984/85, 1988/89, 1992/93) and South Africa (2008/09, 2012/13, 2016/17).
"Massive. No team has done that in a long time. Australia hammers sides when they come here. For India to pull off three on the trot will be something special.
"But they'll have to play good cricket. I see Australia coming hard in this Test match, especially with the bowlers. It's the batting that'll be the challenge for Australia more than anything else." Shastri feels India has come to Australia with a strong intent to win.
"India have come here to win, they haven't come here to fill in the numbers. Even when I was the coach, our mantra was to play extremely hard, fair and to win.
"You have to think of a method to beat Australia and not just compete. You've got to plan properly, how to take your 20 wickets. India have done that and been very aggressive.
"They've been in the face of Australia and give as good as they get. It's been entertaining and feisty stuff. The first day of the Boxing Day Test will determine which way the series will go," he added.

<h2>Head declared fit for Boxing Day Test</h2>

With a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final up for grabs, Australia were eager to get Head into their Playing XI subject to a fitness test. After tests&nbsp;on Wednesday morning, Head was declared fit and will participate in the Boxing Day Test on Thursday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). His fitness will be a boost for the management, considering his form for the side in the series, with two hundreds.

"Trav's good to go, he'll play," Aussie skipper Pat Cummins said. "He just ticked off some final things today and yesterday. But no worries about injury with Trav. He'll go into the game fully fit.

"I don't think you'll see too much management of him throughout the game. He just kind of plays as is. Maybe around fielding, if he's a bit uncomfortable, we will (manage him), but he's fully fit."

"But I think it's a good move getting Konstas in because you need someone who can take the attack to the Indian team, because the punches were coming from nowhere."&nbsp;

New Delhi, India
Indian captain Rohit Sharma expressed his unwavering support to Virat Kohli for being able to counter his woes outside off-stump deliveries ahead of the Boxing Day Test between India and Australia, at the MCG, Melbourne. Kohli scored a hundred in the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series opener, in Perth, but fell flat in the next two games, due to his weakness outside off-stump. Thus, Rohit supported the 'modern-day great' in tackling his issues and becoming good at the MCG, with the five-match series tied at 1-1 after three Tests.
When asked if he had spoken to Kohli about his weakness, Rohit Sharma said in the pre-match presser, "You only said he is a modern-day great. Modern-day greats will figure out their way or the path (to overcome issues)."

Speaking of Rohit, Hitman has also struggled for runs in the ongoing series versus Pat Cummins-led Australia. After missing the series opener, due to paternity leave, Rohit has had scores of 3, 6 and 10. He demoted himself from opening the innings to batting at No. 6 but the move hasn't paid dividends. He did this to ensure KL Rahul bats at the top, who has been in good form since the series opener.
On being asked about his batting spot, Rohit said, "Let's not worry about that. I think 'who bats where?' is something that we need to figure out within ourselves. It's not something I should be discussing at every press conference. Whatever it takes for our team to look good or give the best chance to succeed, we will do that."
The Boxing Day Test commences on Thursday (Dec 26) as both sides will look to take an unassailable lead in the five-match series. If India win, they will be able to retain the BGT once again, since 2016/17.

BGT: Rohit backs 'modern-day great' Kohli to come good vs outside off-stump deliveries in Boxing Day Test

Melbourne, Australia
India skipper Rohit Sharma has declared himself fit for the Boxing Day Test match against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, dismissing any injury concerns. Speaking to the press ahead of the fourth Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Rohit said his knee is doing fine and will be available for selection in the traditional contest. On the other hand, he has also backed the likes of Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill to come good in the series as India chase a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
<h2>Rohit dismisses injury concern</h2>
"My knee is fine," said Rohit on Christmas Eve ahead of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Test between India and Australia.
"Let's not worry about who bats where. Something that we need to figure out and not something I would be discussing here. We will do what is best for the team," Rohit on Kohli's form.
Rohit was hit on the knee on Monday during the practice session at MCG. India will head into the Boxing Day contest fighting for a place in the WTC final, with a win putting them in pole position. Rohit’s men have a proud recent record at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) having avoided defeats on their last three defeats. Interestingly, India have won the last two Tests at the venue under the leadership of Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane respectively. Under MS Dhoni’s leadership, India drew the 2014 Boxing Day Test while Australia’s last win came in the 2011-12 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

So far in the BGT, Rishabh Pant has scored 96 runs in the five innings, scoring at an average of 19.2. On the other hand, Gill has scored 151 runs in five innings, again being a concern for the management. However, Rohit has backed them to come good in the BGT and show their class. Yashasvi Jaiswal has also struggled to cope with the Aussie bowling attack excluding his second innings heroics at Optus Stadium in Perth.
Currently, the BGT is all square at 1-1 after a draw at Gabba between India and Australia. Earlier, India had won the Perth Test with a record margin of 295 runs while Australia returned the favours with a 10-wicket win in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide.

Modern-day greats will figure out their way or the path (to overcome issues)." Also read: BGT 2024/25: Head coach Andrew McDonald confirms Sam Konstas debut for Boxing Day Test; Travis Head uncertain Speaking of Rohit, Hitman has also struggled for runs in the ongoing series versus Pat Cummins-led Australia. Whatever it takes for our team to look good or give the best chance to succeed, we will do that." The Boxing Day Test commences on Thursday (Dec 26) as both sides will look to take an unassailable lead in the five-match series. If India win, they will be able to retain the BGT once again, since 2016/17.

New Delhi, India
The India-Australia Test series is currently poised at 1-1 after the first three Tests. A lot of drama has taken place off the field before the next encounter at the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), i.e. the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. Virat Kohli confronted an Australian journalist after the reporter filmed a video of his family, without permission, irking the star batter. After a few days, Ravindra Jadeja was accused by the Australian media for not entertaining questions in English after a net session at the MCG, Melbourne.
Speaking about Kohli and Jadeja's sour moments with the media, in the lead-up to the Boxing Day Test, former Australia batter Simon Katich feels it is all 'mind games', due to the 'enormity of the series'.
Katich said on Channel 7, "Obviously, there’s been a few things unfolding in the last week or so, that haven’t gone down well at that camp. It’s probably just the mind games being played, given the enormity of this series. "The media are here to promote the game and I don’t know what the Indians are thinking at the moment. That’s their problem,” he added.

Talking about Kohli's confrontation with the media, the former Indian captain argued with the media after a video of his family was captured, without permission, at the Melbourne airport. To this, he was caught saying on the camera, "With my kids, I need some privacy. You can't film without asking me."
On the other hand, Jadeja took a few questions from the Indian reporters post a net session in Melbourne before rushing to catch the team bus. Just then, an Australian reporter argued with the Indian team media manager, saying, "Can't we take one question in English?" While the manager replied saying, "This was organised mainly for the travelling Indian media." The reporter expressed his frustration, stating, "the organisation is hopeless."

Rohit decided to bat in the middle order after KL Rahul did well in the first BGT Test in Perth as the opener during which Rohit was absent due to his second child's birth.
The skipper's form, however, has been a cause of concern long before the Australia tour. In the five Tests he played before the BGT, Rohit scored only 133 runs in 10 innings at an average of 13.33 with a highest of 52. It is to be noted that all those five Tests were played at home.
Rahul, on the other hand, has been doing a fine job as an opener in Australia. The batter has scored 235 runs in six innings - the highest for India in the series so far and second highest overall behind Travis Head's 409.
Rahul has scored those runs at an average of 47 with two fifties and a highest of 84, which he hit in Brisbane, helping India draw the rain-affected Test.
The five-Test series currently stands equal at 1-1 with one more Test to go after Boxing Day Test. India won the first Test of the series before losing the second, while the third Test ended in a draw.

Nathan McSweeney has been dropped from Australia’s Playing XI for the Boxing Day Test as the Aussies look to avoid another humiliation against India at the venue. Sam Konstas has been roped into the squad with a likely place in Playing XI.
The news, reported in Australian media earlier, was confirmed on Friday (Dec 20).
McSweeney’s performances did not impress the selectors in the ongoing Boder-Gavaskar Trophy. The Boxing Day Test is set to start on December 26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), a venue where India has had an impressive recent record.
<h2>Nathan McSweeney dropped</h2>
Having scored 72 runs in six innings during the opening three matches of the BGT, McSweeney has been on the receiving end of heavy criticism. After multiple media reports from CODE Sports and The Sydney Morning Herald, the selectors’ panel led by George Bailey called Konstas- who had impressed in the domestic competitions-  to take the opener’s role.
In six innings during the series, McSweeney, the current South Australia domestic team captain, has failed to make the most of his opportunities.
His top score of 39 came in the first innings of the Adelaide Test while his only unbeaten knock came in the second innings of the same match when Australia needed just 18 runs to win. He has averaged 14.4 during the series, making him a weak link in the side.

Nathan McSweeney dropped Having scored 72 runs in six innings during the opening three matches of the BGT, McSweeney has been on the receiving end of heavy criticism. Australia have not beaten India since December 2011 when Michael Clarke’s side got the better of MS Dhoni’s side. In 2014, the Boxing Day Test ended in a draw while India won the same in 2018 and 2020 under Virat Kohli's and Ajinkya Rahane’s captaincy respectively.

Melbourne, Australia
Rookie Australian opener Sam Konstas says he feels confident about sitting in a better position to press a case for his maiden Australia Test call-up for the remaining two matches against India.
With Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney unable to deliver in the three contested matches thus far, with the Gabba failure being the latest, the Australian selectors due to meet on Thursday (Dec 19) for the MCG Test squad announcement could consider having a proper opener back at the top with the series on the line.
The squad announcement for the fourth Test could come Friday (Dec 20).

While Khawaja has gone 11 innings without scoring a fifty, with his average reading 12.60, McSweeney has failed to make the most of his chance opening for Australia. He showed heart during the first innings in Adelaide but hasn’t capitalised since, putting pressure on the middle order.
At the same time, Konstas has been knocking at the selectors’ doors since the home summer began, averaging over 55. The 19-year-old recently scored a hundred against India for Prime Minister’s XI, later hitting an impressive 88 for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield before creating history with his quick-fire 56 for Sydney Thunder on his BBL debut.
"I'm understanding the scenarios of the game and when to take on the game. Trying to mature as a batsman. Obviously, I'm going to make some silly mistakes, but I think understanding when to take the game on [is an area I've improved in],” Konstas said.
<h2>Changes in Australia XI for MCG Test</h2>
With seamer Josh Hazlewood ruled out of the remainder of the BGT with a side strain, Scott Boland is locked as one confirmed change in the XI for the Boxing Day Test.
As the selectors will sit to pick the squad for the Melbourne Test, Konstas' selection discussion could be the highlight. Should they name him in the XI, Australia could debut Sam at the ‘G’, dropping either of the underperforming openers.
In another case, where the selectors plan to play all three (Usman, McSweeney, and Konstas), either Mitchell Marsh or Marnus Labuschagne could sit out. In that scenario, Usman could have a new opening partner in Konstas, with McSweeney back to the number three or later, where he played most of his cricket.
Besides, Australia also has Josh Inglis and Beau Webster as part of the reserves, with the all-rounder likely to make his Test debut ahead of Marsh owing to his poor run with the bat and inability to bowl more overs.
The five-match series is tied at 1-1, with the fourth Test scheduled for December 26 start.

BGT: Sam Konstas knocks on selector's doors as MCG Test squad announcement looms

Melbourne, Australia
Virat Kohli was left upset after an Australian journalist clicked his and his family’s photo upon his arrival at the Melbourne airport ahead of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG. Kohli confronted the female journalist, who breached his privacy and recorded his arrival in the city with his wife and kids, irking the Indian batting great.
Per a video doing rounds on social media, Kohli wasn’t happy with the journalist snapping him without his consent; Virat approached her and requested to revisit what she clicked, later asking her to delete it. That, however, led to a little argument.

Virat also requested his country’s media not to click him (and his family) while boarding the flight to Australia.
"With my kids, I need some privacy. You can't film without asking me," Virat said at the MCG airport, as quoted by India Today.
<h2>Virat and Bumrah travel separately </h2>
Unlike travelling with the BGT-bound Test squad together, Virat and ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah have been travelling separately with their families within cities Down Under.
While Kohli and Bumrah travelled on a chartered flight from Adelaide to Brisbane - the venues for the second and third Tests, respectively, Kohli did not travel with the rest of the squad from Brisbane to Melbourne either, re-linking with them separately.
<h3>Rough patch after Perth hundred</h3>
Virat’s form has kept a billion fans back home on their toes. The batting genius has been out of touch since the home New Zealand series, where he scored 91 runs from six outings.
Against Australia, Virat got out cheaply in the first innings at the Optus stadium before notching up a brilliant hundred in the second, guiding India home in the series opener. His scores since that outing read 7, 11 and 3, keeping everyone worried about his lean patch.
However, his record at the G speaks a lot about  Virat run at the ground. He could fancy his chances of regaining some form, trying to put India ahead in the WTC Final 2025 race. Kohli can ensure that by avoiding flirting the fifth stump line, which happened to get the better of him mostly.
Meanwhile, for India to confirm direct qualification, they must win the remaining two matches against Australia, besides hoping for South Africa to beat Pakistan to avoid any last-minute hiccups.
Should India win at the MCG and the SCG, they will complete a three-peat Down Under, becoming the first team to win three straight Test series in Australia.
