Meanwhile, former Pakistan captain and coach Misbah pointed out that Pakistan would only do well if everyone in the squad contributes collectively and isn't dependent on a select few (namely captain Babar, Shaheen Shah Afridi and keeper-batter Mohammed Rizwan). In this regard, he opined, "Don't just expect Babar to perform every time. This is not possible. This team has been successful as a collective unit and they must remember that even in India."

Misbah mentioned that now is not the time to raise questions on Babar, who had been entrusted with the role long back. "Now is not the time to talk about his captaincy. He is someone who can be relied upon in the World Cup as a captain and batsman," he stated.&nbsp;

“It’s good that such matters have come out before the big tournament. So that, you can rectify and improve conduct. This will develop unity. The issues should not happen during matches. The No. 1 ranked ODI side started the continental tournament as hot favourites and kicked off the Super Four round with a seven-wicket win over Bangladesh. However, they need nothing less than a win to proceed to the final when they face hosts Sri Lanka, at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, following the India hammering.

Talking about the India game, which was a two-day affair due to rain and wet outfield, Morkel said in the SL pre-match presser, "After the India match, we were bitterly disappointed. For me, it is very important for the bowlers to do a bit of self-reflection, ask yourself the hard questions. Yes, credit must also go to the Indian batters."

He further asserted, ''They put us under pressure early. Those are fantastic lessons for us before the World Cup. We are gonna grow from this and come back stronger."

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam claimed the ICC Men's Player of the Month award for the third time, bagging the award for August 2023.

Babar who currently sits comfortably at the summit of the ODI rankings continued to impress with bat in the month of August.

His richness of form was reflected in his performances as he struck two fifties and a century. In Pakistan's ODI series against Afghanistan, Babar struck two fifties in the final two matches.

He brought up a 118-run stand with Imam-ul-Haq in the second ODI that laid the foundation for a thrilling last-over finale. Babar contributed 53 runs with the bat and was backed by Imam (91 runs) and the lower order.

Babar didn't stop there, he replicated his performance in the 3rd ODI with his exquisite knock of 60. His sublime batting skills were on display in the Asia Cup opener against Nepal. Babar's knock of 151 made him the first captain in the Asia Cup to score 150 or more than that.

Pakistan's Babar Azam bags third ICC Men's Player of the Month award

India vs Pakistan clash in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2023 in Colombo on September 10 started off in a contrasting note when compared to the group stage fixture. The previous match had seen Pak pace trio of Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf rocking the Indian top order, but tables were turned on Sunday.

After the drink breaks, however, Pakistan pulled things back and took two wickets in two overs to halt the assault. The day, nonetheless, didn't belong to Pak bowlers as skipper Babar Azam denied a request to use a review despite Haris Rauf pleading for it.

With Pakistan 15/0 in their innings, the floodlights at the Gaddafi Stadium went off creating unsuitable conditions for playing. The incident occurred at the end of the fifth over as Pakistan batters Fakhar Zaman (13) and Imam-ul-Haq (2) were in the middle. The players and the umpires had no idea of what had happened and initially waited in the middle to see if the situation could be resolved.

Interestingly, only one tower of floodlights went off while others were working smoothly at the Gaddafi Stadium.&nbsp; The lights would then return in 20 minutes as Pakistan would continue their run chase. Babar Azam’s men had to chase 194 runs after Bangladesh were bowled out for 193.

Earlier, former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi had trolled the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) for scheduling the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. ACC initially thought to switch venues for the tournament as the Colombo venue was rain-affected. The ACC planned to switch the matches to Hambantota but did not make the plan official as both PCB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) agreed to stay at the venue.

"We've been here for the last two months," Babar told media personals on Friday.&nbsp;

“We played the Tests [against Sri Lanka] here, then the LPL and then the Afghanistan series. We have a decent knowledge of the conditions, and the wicket looks like a sporting one. I've found Sri Lankan conditions pretty similar to Pakistani and Indian conditions. You take time when you come in to bat, and bowl in the right channels,” the Pakistan Captain added.

With the right team balance and the form on their side, Pakistan is confident of turning the tables against India. Breaking the notion of Pakistan starting the contest against their arch-rivals as the underdogs, Babar said his team is under no pressure and wants to build on the momentum instead.

Babar added he is happy with how his team is progressing and that he banks on the batting order to stand tall against a seam-heavy Indian attack.

"I don't think we feel the pressure of this game," he said.&nbsp;

"We're focusing on what we can control. We want to continue our momentum. The boys are excited. You know India-Pakistan is a high-intensity match, and the fans wait for it for a while. We're similarly excited. We're going to stick with the same top order; but if we don't get a good start, I am encouraged by the middle order stepping up. They're chipping in. We had been lagging in the middle order for a while, but they're responding well now,” Babar added.

Ahead of the much-awaited game, former&nbsp;captain and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ramiz Raja named a star batter who should be rested for the India game.

Pakistan started their campaign with a thumping win over Nepal&nbsp;in the tournament opener in Multan on Wednesday (August 30). Riding on Babar Azam's 151 and Iftikhar Ahmed's 109, the Men in Green posted a mammoth 342 for 6 and dismissed Nepal for 104. While everything clicked for the co-hosts, they were off to a poor start at 25 for 2 before Babar&nbsp;and Iftikhar came to the team's rescue.

Despite the early hiccups, Pakistan were at their dominant best. However, Ramiz feels the No. 1 ODI side should rest opener Fakhar Zaman for the India tie. Zaman&nbsp;has scores of 2, 30, 27 and 14 in his last four innings, respectively. Thus, the ex-PCB chief feels 'Zaman is the big problem'.

Ramiz said on his official YouTube channel. "The big problem is Fakhar Zaman. He is an unorthodox hitter, but when someone like that gets out of form, it takes some time to find solutions on the drawing board. He's a bottom-handed player, plays on the leg-side, somehow he adjusts with that and scores."

He added, “He played three matches against Afghanistan and couldn't make a mark as well. His body language is suffering, and Pakistan need an in-form opener. If Imam also gets dismissed cheaply, it creates pressure. Pakistan need to assess Fakhar. I believe they should rest him, give him some time out. Sidelining him is better for him as well as the Pakistan side. He's a good player, Pakistan has given him chances. But against India, with the form that he has, that chance is not worth being taken.”

It is to be noted that Zaman hasn't made it big in the last few innings but still has been among runs in the recent past. In the last 15 innings, he has four tons and a half-century under his belt. It will be interesting to see if Pakistan tinker with their winning combination and 'rest' Zaman, whose maiden ODI century came against India in the 2017 Champions Trophy final.

Asia Cup: Babar, Iftikhar and bowlers dismantle Nepal as Pakistan win by 238 runs

Pakistan started their Asia Cup 2023 campaign on Wednesday, August 30, against Nepal and their skipper Babar Azam led from the front. After losing two early wickets, Babar held the innings together first with Mohammed Rizwan and then with Iftikhar Ahmed as Pakistan went on top in their innings.

Babar scored a magnificent 151 as the hosts posted a mammoth total of 342/6 runs in 50 overs. Babar, in the process of hitting his ton, broke an ODI record as well. This was Babar's 19th ton overall in one-day games and he took just 102 innings to get there. He now tops the list of batsmen who are fastest to reach 19 ODI tons, leaving past the likes of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla.

Before Babar, South African Amla was the fastest to reach 19 ODI centuries in 104 innings. Former India skipper Kohli, with whom Babar is often compared to, had reached the milestone in 124 innings. Completing the top five of the list are Australia David Warner in 139 innings and de Villiers in 171 innings.

As for the match, Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first in Multan. Nepal, playing first time in the regional tournament, did well to scalp two quick wickets of openers Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq. Babar then added 86 runs for the third wicket with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/asia-cup-wait-what-md-rizwans-brainfade-moment-makes-heads-turn-during-pakistan-nepal-opener-630606">Rizwan (44) who got out rather funnily</a>.

Nepal created an opening in 28th over of the innings by taking Agha Salman (5) out shortly after Rizwan's wicket but that was the last they celebrated. Ahmed (109 not out) joined his captain on the crease and the duo added 214 runs for the fifth wicket before Pak lost two wickets in last over while trying to accelerate.

For Nepal, Sompal Kami took wickets while Karan KC and Sandeep Lamichhane took one each.

As expected the ever-reliable Babar will lead the two-time champions against Nepal who is expected to bat No.3. Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq will be the opening pair as the latter will look to regain his form having started 2023 on a high. The pace attack will led by the always impressive Shaheen Shah Afridi who will share the new ball with Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf. Afridi will be crucial to Pakistan’s success as he brings tons of experience and will look at the contest as a warm-up to the India match on Saturday. Pakistan are easily expected to make the Super Four as debutants Nepal will have a mountain to climb. The Men in Green will then face India in Pallekele on Saturday in a high-voltage clash. As expected if both India and Pakistan beat Nepal, they will feature in the Super Four clash on Sunday, September 10.

The two arch-rivals could meet again in the final if a certain set of results are met in the Super Four. Both India and Pakistan are also meeting in the ODI World Cup on Saturday, October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The Asia Cup 2023 edition kicks off on Wednesday evening (August 30) with Babar Azam-led Pakistan hosting Nepal in Multan. The tournament will be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan and the fans are eagerly excited to see the resumption of India-Pakistan rivalry. There is a strong possibility of fans to be treated with as many as three games between the two arch-rivals as they are likely to meet in the Super Four and can also lock horns in the summit clash, on September 17.&nbsp;

At present, India and Pakistan are in Group A and will meet each other on September 02 (Saturday) at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele. Ahead of the marquee face-off, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt named his national side as the favourites and feels India are solely dependent on captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.&nbsp;

On his YouTube channel, Butt pointed out, "If we look at India's fast bowling, fitness is a concern. Players have been unfit for a long time, we don't know if they are fragile, will they go full throttle. Apart from Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, they have youngsters, who have played plenty of cricket but they don't have that much of experience."

He asserted, "India have won matches only when Rohit Sharma has played well or Virat Kohli has done something spectacular. When the onus is on others they have mostly struggled. Pakistan have Babar, Rizwan, Fakhar, Shadab, Shaheen, Haris Rauf. And in my opinion Pakistan have a much larger core group. India too have match-winners like Jadeja, Shami, Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli. But their batting is brittle, if Pakistan pick the two big wickets then the others will have a lot to prove. They have not helped India win matches against Pakistan or in their own."

Butt further opined on where the Men in Green have an 'added advantage' and said, "We have bowlers who can bowl at 90mph, only one or two can touch 90mph, others don't have that much pace. This is an added advantage. We have both type of spinners, fast bowling all-rounder, and he too touches 140kph."

In addition, Butt spoke about Indian youngsters and acknowledged their experience of facing tough situations in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, he was quick to add that an Indo-Pak battle is a different ball game altogether and adds more pressure. “There are plenty of expectations from India, hence the pressure is more. And since India have not played against Pakistan for a long time for whatever reasons, their players no matter how much IPL they've played, they don't have the experience of playing in such high-voltage clash.&nbsp;Chahe subah, dopahar, sham IPL khel le&nbsp;(no matter how much you play in the IPL) it does not bring the same pressure, which is during India-Pakistan series,” he added.

The Asia Cup 2023 edition is set to kick off on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan. The upcoming edition of the continental tournament will be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan and the whole cricketing fraternity is eagerly waiting for the tournament's commencement, mainly to witness the resumption of India-Pakistan rivalry.

Talking about the 2023 edition, India, Pakistan and Nepal are placed in Group A whereas Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh are in Group B. Ahead of the tournament-opener, where Babar Azam &amp; Co. host Nepal, former Pakistan great Wasim Akram opened up on the favourites for the multi-nation competition and feels every team has a chance.

"India versus Pakistan is very important, we know about so much support (teams get), so many eyeballs, so many people (following). But other teams are also here to play so you cannot minus Sri Lanka or Bangladesh," Akram said, as quoted by PTI.

On Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue's squad, Akram opined, "I think they are trying different things, new players especially in the T20 format, also a new captain. They have a balanced squad. But it will not be easy for India or any team."

India's 17-man squad marks the return of middle-order batters KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer whereas Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah are set to feature in the playing XI after a gap of 13 months. The tournament is an ideal dress rehearsal for five out of the six&nbsp;Asian teams who will also take part in the forthcoming ODI World Cup, in India, starting on October 05.

The Asia Cup 2023 edition is set to kick off on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan. The upcoming edition of the continental tournament will be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan and the whole cricketing fraternity is eagerly waiting for the tournament's commencement, mainly to witness the resumption of India-Pakistan rivalry.

The Asia Cup 2023 edition is set to kick off on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan. Ahead of the tournament-opener, where Babar Azam & Co. host Nepal, former Pakistan great Wasim Akram opened up on the favourites for the multi-nation competition and feels every team has a chance. "India versus Pakistan is very important, we know about so much support (teams get), so many eyeballs, so many people (following). But other teams are also here to play so you cannot minus Sri Lanka or Bangladesh," Akram said, as quoted by PTI. India's 17-man squad marks the return of middle-order batters KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer whereas Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah are set to feature in the playing XI after a gap of 13 months. The tournament is an ideal dress rehearsal for five out of the six Asian teams who will also take part in the forthcoming ODI World Cup, in India, starting on October 05. With Asia Cup 2023 around the corner, Pakistan have taken the number one spot in the ICC ODI rankings after beating Afghanistan 3-0 in the ODI series. Being one of the two hosts, Pakistan have good chances to going all the way in the Asia Cup. The ICC ODI World Cup is also shortly after the regional tournament and Men In Green would like to carry their form in the quadrennial event as well.

Speaking after the match, Pak skipper Babar Azam said that the momentum they have gotten here will give them confidence in the Asia Cup.

"We are excited going into the Asia Cup. The manner of our series victory over Afghanistan will serve us well in the tournament. It wasn't as easy against Afghanistan as some people think. Everyone is aware of their spin prowess. The momentum we gained in this series will give us confidence in the Asia Cup. We are hopeful of producing good cricket for our fans," Babar told PCB Digital.

The regional tournament, which is being played in 50-over format as a precursor to ODI World Cup, will start from August 30 when Pakistan take on Nepal. Another continental giant, India, will start their campaign against Babar Azam's men on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

After the Asia Cup, teams will gather in India for the ICC ODI World Cup which is scheduled from October 5 - November 19. Pakistan, after their recent series win, are one of the strong contenders in the upcoming marquee tournament.

Needing a win to clinch the top spot in the ICC rankings, Babar’s army put up 268/8 on the board as they put in a flawless show at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday, August 26. Babar (60) and Rizwan (67) laid the foundation for the win as Afghanistan tried to stop them. Fareed Ahmad and Gulbadin Naib both scalped two wickets each while Rashid Khan scalped one.

For Pakistan, Agha Salman (38) and Mohammad Nawaz (30) played useful knocks and helped steer the team beyond the 250-run mark. Fakhar Zaman (27) and Imam-ul-Haq (13) put in an opening stand of 36 runs before the former was dismissed. Interestingly, Babar and Rizwan put in 110 runs for the third wicket and steadied the Pakistan ship to help them reach 268/8.

In reply, there was no repeat of Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s heroics from the last match as he departed for 5 in the sixth over. In next to no time, Afghanistan were 75/6 and looked on course for another humiliating defeat having been bowled out for 58 in the first ODI. They lost wickets at regular intervals and handed the initiative to the Men in Green.

However, Mujeeb Ur Rahman avoided the blemish of humiliation as he built a 57-run stand with Shahidullah Kamal (37) for the eighth wicket before being out hit wicket to Shaheen Shah Afridi on 64. The&nbsp; Afghanistan tail then did not last for long and were&nbsp;bowled out for 209, handing Pakistan the top spot in the ICC ODI rankings. The 59-run win also saw them pocket the series 3-0.
