“I think absolutely he is. He does remind me very much of Virat Kohli, the way he goes about his business. He plays authentic cricket shots. He seems to understand, read the game very well, which Kohli has done for over a decade. He is a good chaser as well, like Virat Kohli has proven to be over many, many years. So, there's so much likeness between the two and I wouldn't go as far as saying that Virat is gonna have a better Asia Cup than Babar Azam, but they both can have equal pressure on them and it's gonna be a delight to watch them both bat because they are box office.”

Former South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis has predicted the highest run-getter in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023&nbsp;being held in India. The forthcoming mega event will kick off in the subcontinent on October 05 with the defending champions Jos Buttler-led England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad whereas hosts Rohit Sharma-led India face Australia, in Chennai, on October 08.

Kallis, a legend who represented South Africa in 166 Tests, 328 ODIs and 25 T20Is, feels England captain Buttler will end up as the leading run-scorer in the upcoming edition. In the last edition, in England and Wales, Rohit Sharma ended with 648 runs -- most by any batter.

"I think Jos Butler will be the leading run scorer. An outside call, but I fancy him in those conditions. Along with England having a good World Cup, I think, um, me, he's going to be the one guy that stands up," said Kallis while speaking to the ICC.

He has a lot of experience of playing in India, thanks to his stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he plays for the Rajasthan Royals (RR). Overall, he&nbsp;has scored 3,223 runs from 96 IPL matches, at an impressive strike-rate of 148.32.&nbsp;

However, Buttler doesn't have a good ODI record in India -- having managed&nbsp;83 runs in eight matches so far at an average of&nbsp;11. Thus, he has a task to improve his record and help England successfully defend their title. The one-time winners have a plethora of superstars in their line-up, such as Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Moeen Ali, etc. Having already led England to the championship in his only ICC event as captain, during the 2022 T20 World Cup, Buttler will feel confident leading the English line-up in the upcoming big-ticket event.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are capable of playing big knocks, and they play at a better strike rate than our top-order batters, which gives India an advantage."

Pakistan captain Babar Azam has expressed his desire to do well in the upcoming 50-over World Cup in India. During an exclusive chat with Geo News on Thursday, the number one ODI batter said the team is focused on doing well in the multi-team tournament scheduled for October-November window later this year.

“We are focused on the World Cup in India and will try to put up a good show during the tournament,” Babar Azam said while speaking with Geo News.

These comments have come on the back of the&nbsp;Pakistan Cricket Board’s recent remarks on boycotting the 50-over World Cup after the BCCI refused to travel to Pakistan for the scheduled 2023 Asia Cup owing to political and security reasons. After BCCI secretary Jay Shah informed PCB chief Najam Sethi about India’s stance of not coming over to Pakistan for the Asia Cup during the previous Asian Cricket Council meeting, Sethi, in response, went public saying if India refuses to travel despite being given security assurances, PCB would&nbsp;also opt to pull out of the mega event in first of its kind move in world cricket.

Speaking to the media in Karachi, where most of Pakistan players are attending a camp before flying to Sri Lanka for the two-match Test series, Babar said all the hype around the most-talked-about match at the World Cup wouldn't distract his team from achieving the bigger goal - which is to win the tournament for the first time since 1992.

"We are going to play World Cup and not just going to play against India only," Babar said. "There are eight other teams, and it's not only India, and only if we beat them then we will make it into the final. We are not focused on only one team, we are focused on all other teams in the tournament. Our plan is that we have to play well against all of them and win against them."

The final schedule is already out, with Pakistan starting their campaign against two qualifying teams - the Netherlands on October 6 and Sri Lanka on October 12, both in Hyderabad. Following that, the big clash against host India will get underway in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

Pakistan's remaining six matches will take place in cities like Bengaluru (vs Australia on October 20 and New Zealand on November 4), Chennai (vs Afghanistan on October 23 and against South Africa on October 27) and at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata (against Bangladesh on October 31 and England on November 12).

Babar said: "In our thought, wherever the cricket will be played, wherever the matches are, we are going to play there. Because as professionals that is what we do, you have to be ready for everything. You prepare yourself for different conditions and in every environment and that is what we call a challenge, and you take it to live up to it.&nbsp;

"Me, as a player and captain, I aspire to score runs in every country, dominate and win Pakistan games. So this is all we have in mind and not only that we're going to play against one team."

Pakistan's latest assignment is against Sri Lanka as both teams will face off in the two-match Test series starting July 16 in Galle.

Asia Cup 2023: Pakistan announce 18-man squad led by Babar Azam; to kick off campaign against Nepal on Aug 30

Pakistan cricket team is all set for a historic pay hike as the board prepares to offer lucrative deals to players before the ODI World Cup in India. Star names like Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Mohammad Rizwan are in line to earn four times more than their previous salaries as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) starts revamping its pay system. The deals will come into play in the new central contracts the board will offer and will come as a welcome addition for the players associated with the national side.

The new contract amendment will see players like Babar and Afridi earn $15,900 per month, four times more than their previous salaries. The new central contract will also see Pakistan return to the old category format, diverting away from last year’s stint of dividing players into red and white ball format. The top brass players will include Pakistan skipper Babar, Shaheen Afridi, and Rizwan, forming category A.

The Category B players will receive $10,600 per month while those in Category C and D will get a pay slip between $2650 to $5300 approximately per month. The hike has mainly got to do with the sharp depreciation of the Pakistan rupee in the last year, as well as an economy in which inflation has been spiraling out of control.

Top Pakistan players had shown discontent with the previous terms offered by then PCB boss Ramiz Raja. This led to the delayed signing of contracts with the majority of the players unhappy with the restrictions imposed to play in different multi-national leagues. The current contract terms offer players the luxury of playing in other leagues along with the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The top two category players can play in any one league other than the PSL while the lower category players can participate in more than one multi-national league.

It also thought that a new advisory board led by former skipper Misbah-ul-Haq is working on a model that could aid the players. Currently, the players are restricted to playing in one other league other than the PSL; however, this has constrained their earnings. A better plan would see players earn two to three times which could be career career-changing path for the players and their families.

The deals will come into play in the new central contracts the board will offer and will come as a welcome addition for the players associated with the national side. The new contract amendment will see players like Babar and Afridi earn $15,900 per month, four times more than their previous salaries. The new central contract will also see Pakistan return to the old category format, diverting away from last year’s stint of dividing players into red and white ball format. The top brass players will include Pakistan skipper Babar, Shaheen Afridi, and Rizwan, forming category A. The Category B players will receive $10,600 per month while those in Category C and D will get a pay slip between $2650 to $5300 approximately per month. The hike has mainly got to do with the sharp depreciation of the Pakistan rupee in the last year, as well as an economy in which inflation has been spiraling out of control. This time around, the tournament will be held in the ODI format -- mainly to serve as a dress rehearsal for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in India in October-November. Ever since the fixtures were out, there is a lot of excitement among fans as many expect arch-rivals India and Pakistan to meet thrice in the upcoming edition.

Both sides will meet on September 02 and can possibly meet after eight days, on September 10, and also in the final. Ahead of his side's face-off versus India, Pakistan great Waqar Younis backed Babar Azam &amp; Co. to beat Rohit Sharma-led Team India.&nbsp;

Former India opener Aakash Chopra has said that based on his current form,&nbsp;Virat Kohli doesn’t belong to Fab Four anymore, a quartet that includes Joe Root, Kane Williamson and Steve Smith. Speaking on the same lines on his YouTube channel, Aakash said much like Kohli, David Warner, a veteran batter, is also going through the same patch,&nbsp;having attained a poor record against England’s Stuart Broad, getting out to him for the record 17th time.

Chopra said Virat, in current form, is out of Fab 4; as a result, it is now just Fab 3.

Nonetheless, the final schedule saw none of PCB's reported requests being taken into account. After the schedule was out, PCB made it clear that they are yet to get clearance from their government to play the ODI World Cup in India and they will inform the ICC once they get the nod. In this regard, former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali reacted to all the developments and slammed the board for asking for venue changes. In addition, he feels that Pakistan should stick to the venues offered -- as it can work to their advantage -- and are confident of the Men in Green's participation in the mega event.

Shaheen Afridi, Babar Azam would be box office at IPL auction, predict Tom Moody and Manjrekar

Babar Azam scored a superb century on Friday to help lift Pakistan to the top of the one-day international rankings after a thumping 102-run victory in the fourth match against New Zealand in Karachi. Azam stroked a 117-ball 107 and also became the fastest batter to reach 5,000 ODI runs, as his team made 334-6 in their 50 overs.

His 18th ODI hundred took him past the mark in his 97th innings in the format, beating former South Africa batter Hashim Amla's previous record of 101 innings.

New Zealand were bowled out for 232 in 43.4 overs with skipper Tom Latham (60), Mark Chapman (46) and Daryl Mitchell (34) offering some resistance. Leg-spinner Usama Mir led Pakistan's bowling charge with a career-best 4-43 while pacers Mohammad Wasim (3-40) and Haris Rauf (2-37) also impressed.

The win gave Pakistan a 4-0 lead in the five-match series and took them to number one for the first time since the International Cricket Council officially recognised the rankings in 2005. Pakistan's previous highest ODI ranking was third which they attained in January 2018 and again in June 2022.

"I will say that the credit goes to the entire team and support staff for becoming the number-one ranked ODI team," said Azam. "We built the momentum and worked towards this goal.

"I think my journey has been good. I joined the camp on this very day nine years ago, and there have been ups and downs, but the support has been amazing."

Azam starred with his 30th ton in all international cricket after New Zealand won the toss and put the hosts in to bat at National Stadium. The 28-year-old beat Amla's record when he reached 19. He added 50 for the second wicket with Shan Masood (44), 127 for the fourth wicket with Agha Salman (58) and another 41 for the sixth with Iftikhar Ahmed who scored 28.

Azam, who has been the number one ODI batter for the last two years, hit 10 boundaries before he was caught at deep mid-wicket off debutant Ben Lister in the 48th over.

Azam is the 14th Pakistani to score 5,000 or more runs in ODI cricket, with former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq top of the list with 11,701. He is also the fastest to 18 ODI hundreds, beating Amla's record of 102 innings.

"When we started our innings, the wicket played well. I and Shan planned to build the innings. We felt it was 300-plus wicket and then we bowled well," added Azam.

Salman chipped in with two sixes and four fours in his 46-ball knock before being caught and bowled by pacer Matt Henry who finished with 3-65. Shaheen Shah Afridi hit three sixes and a four in his seven-ball 23 not out as Pakistan plundered 94 runs in the last 10 overs.

"Credit to the way they played, Babar played fantastically," said New Zealand's Latham.

Azam stroked a 117-ball 107 and also became the fastest batter to reach 5,000 ODI runs, as his team made 334-6 in their 50 overs. His 18th ODI hundred took him past the mark in his 97th innings in the format, beating former South Africa batter Hashim Amla's previous record of 101 innings. New Zealand were bowled out for 232 in 43.4 overs with skipper Tom Latham (60), Mark Chapman (46) and Daryl Mitchell (34) offering some resistance. Leg-spinner Usama Mir led Pakistan's bowling charge with a career-best 4-43 while pacers Mohammad Wasim (3-40) and Haris Rauf (2-37) also impressed. The win gave Pakistan a 4-0 lead in the five-match series and took them to number one for the first time since the International Cricket Council officially recognised the rankings in 2005. Pakistan's previous highest ODI ranking was third which they attained in January 2018 and again in June 2022. "We built the momentum and worked towards this goal. "I think my journey has been good. Azam starred with his 30th ton in all international cricket after New Zealand won the toss and put the hosts in to bat at National Stadium. The 28-year-old beat Amla's record when he reached 19. He added 50 for the second wicket with Shan Masood (44), 127 for the fourth wicket with Agha Salman (58) and another 41 for the sixth with Iftikhar Ahmed who scored 28. Azam, who has been the number one ODI batter for the last two years, hit 10 boundaries before he was caught at deep mid-wicket off debutant Ben Lister in the 48th over. Azam is the 14th Pakistani to score 5,000 or more runs in ODI cricket, with former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq top of the list with 11,701. He is also the fastest to 18 ODI hundreds, beating Amla's record of 102 innings. "When we started our innings, the wicket played well. I and Shan planned to build the innings. We felt it was 300-plus wicket and then we bowled well," added Azam. Salman chipped in with two sixes and four fours in his 46-ball knock before being caught and bowled by pacer Matt Henry who finished with 3-65. Shaheen Shah Afridi hit three sixes and a four in his seven-ball 23 not out as Pakistan plundered 94 runs in the last 10 overs. "Credit to the way they played, Babar played fantastically," said New Zealand's Latham.

Pakistan registered their first one-day international series win over New Zealand in 12 years with a hard-fought 26-run victory in the third match in Karachi on Wednesday. Imam-ul-Haq scored a 107-ball 90 while Babar Azam made a 62-ball 54 for his 26th ODI half-century to guide Pakistan to 287-6 in their 50 overs.

Opener Tom Blundell hit 65 for New Zealand while debutant Cole McConchie struck an undefeated 45-ball 64 but the visitors were bowled out for 261 in 49.1 overs.

Pakistan, who won the first two matches by five and seven wickets, respectively in Rawalpindi, took an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.

"It's always a relief when you win a series and it was a good team effort," said Azam. "We put (on) a good total and then (the) bowlers were outstanding. "The focus is now to not relax and come out strongly for the next two matches and hopefully we can continue to give one hundred percent."

The last two matches are on Friday and Sunday, also in Karachi.

Pakistan's last ODI series win over New Zealand was in 2011 and since then they had lost six of the seven series, with one drawn.

New Zealand threatened to run away with a win as Blundell and Will Young (33 off 41 balls) gave them a confident opening stand of 83 in 15.3 overs.

Pakistan finally broke through with Young's run out off a direct throw from short third-man, before Mohammad Wasim dismissed Daryl Mitchell for 21 -- the man who had hit successive hundreds in the last two matches.

Fifteen runs later, Blundell was also run out after failing to reach his crease in an attempt to complete a second run. He hit seven boundaries in his knock.

Tom Latham, who made 45, and Mark Chapman (13) added 40 for the fourth wicket but pacer Naseem Shah bowled Chapman with a beautiful delivery before Latham was cleaned up by Wasim.

McConchie tied valiantly to snatch a victory for New Zealand, smashing two sixes and six fours but ran out of partners.

Naseem, Wasim and Shaheen Shah Afridi all took two wickets for Pakistan.

"The pitch probably slowed up a little bit," said New Zealand captain Latham. "If we had a couple of partnerships here and there then things could have been a little different but we were not quite at our best."

Earlier, New Zealand started well by getting the in-form opener Fakhar Zaman caught off Matt Henry for 19.

Zaman, who had scored three hundreds in his last three ODI innings, had shaped up well before his fall, leaving it to Haq and Azam to steady the innings during their 108-run second-wicket stand.

Azam hit three fours and a six before he chopped one onto his stumps off Henry.

Haq was bowled by pacer Adam Milne in the 38th over.

Abdullah Shafique struggled again as he managed just 19, but Agha Salman (31) helped Mohammad Rizwan (32) add 54 runs for the fifth wicket to lift the total.

In the final overs, Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan also chipped in with 11 and 21 not out respectively.

Henry was the best bowler for New Zealand, taking 3-54.

Former Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik thinks that current Pakistan captain Babar Azam should quit captaincy and focus just as a player. Malik made the statement while speaking to Pakistan's media network Geo TV.

"If I was in Babar’s place, or those people who guide him, they should tell him that Babar should quit captaincy. And focus just as a player. Pakistan team will also benefit from this,” Malik told to Geo Sports.

Malik, during his chat, also lamented the cricket culture in Pakistan which wants overnight results. He, however, picked Babar to break all kind of batting record if he focused on being a player only.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azar surpasses India's Rohit Sharma with hundred in 2nd T20I against New Zealand

Skipper Babar Azam smashed a magnificent century while pace bowler Haris Rauf took four wickets as Pakistan beat New Zealand by 38 runs in the second T20 international in Lahore on Saturday.

Azam, who fell for just nine in his 100th T20I on Friday, compensated with a brisk 58-ball 101 not out to lift Pakistan to a solid 192-4 in their 20 overs.

Rauf, who took a career best 4-18 in Pakistan's 88-run win in the series opener, finished with 4-27 to restrict New Zealand to 154-7.

Pakistan now lead the five-match series 2-0 with the last three matches in Lahore (April 17) and Rawalpindi (April 20 and 24).

"I am very happy&nbsp;to perform in this match," said Azam, who is now the joint most successful T20I captain with 42 wins, alongside England's Eoin Morgan and Afghanistan's Asghar Afghan.

"I had two good partnerships and then our bowling was once again excellent. We have got experienced and exciting young bowlers who gave us back-to-back wins."

Mark Chapman scored a battling 65 not out for New Zealand featuring four fours and as many sixes, but lost partners at regular intervals after the tourists made a decent start.

Chad Bowes (26) and skipper Tom Latham (19) put on 44 for the first wicket in 6.2 overs, but as the asking rate soared New Zealand's chase lost steam.

"We have been there or thereabouts but weren't able to finish the innings off, both with the ball and bat," said Latham.

"When Babar plays like that, you tip your hat off."

Azam was the mainstay of the Pakistan innings after he won the toss and chose to bat.

He smashed a six and two fours in the last over to reach his third T20I century, becoming only the sixth batter to do so in the shortest format at international level.

Azam put on 99 for the opening wicket with Mohammad Rizwan, who scored 50 off 34 balls.

Azam, whose knock included 11 fours and three sixes, then added 87 for the fifth wicket with Iftikhar Ahmed, who finished 33 not out as the home team added 65 runs in the last five overs.

After removing Rizwan in the 11th over, New Zealand slowed Pakistan's charge as Matt Henry then dismissed Fakhar Zaman for a duck and finished with 2-29.

Saim Ayub also fell without scoring and Imad Wasim was out for two as Pakistan lost four wickets for just six runs in the space of 14 balls.

Azam started the 20th over on 84 and looked like he would end short of a century, but he took the attack to James Neesham -- dispatching the last ball over cover for a four to reach his ninth hundred in all T20 cricket.

Only Chris Gayle of the West Indies has hit more hundreds in the format with 22, while India's Rohit Sharma leads the T20I chart with four tons.
