Australia announced its decision to end a major visa programme that was targeted at attracting wealthy investors.

Affluent overseas investors were granted the right to live in the country under the plan dubbed as "golden visa" scheme.

The Australian government decided to terminate it in an immigration overhaul after it was found that the visa programme was not delivering the desired economic outcomes.

Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil, on Monday (Jan 22), released a statement saying, "It has been obvious for years that this visa is not delivering what our country and economy needs."

“The investor visa is one of many aspects of the system which are reforming to create a system which delivers for our country,” the Home Affairs Minister added.

Australia’s centre-left Labor government, in the month of December, unveiled a new immigration plan that was designed to reduce the number of new arrivals in the country to pre-COVID levels.

It also focused on creating more visas for the skilled migrants who were capable "of making outsized contributions to Australia" and could fill up the growing gaps in the world's sixth-largest country's economy.

The scheme has over the years been critiqued over "corrupt officials" exploiting it to "park illicit funds".

Unlike other visa schemes, the golden visa did not require people to speak or learn the English language and did not have any age limit. However, it was mandatory for the people seeking permanent residency to invest a total of $5 million in Australia.

85% of successful applicants came from China

The critics have long argued that the visa scheme created a swift path for Chinese millionaires into the country, who comprised more than 85 per cent of the successful applications.

As per local media reports, the visa subclass was given the number 888, which stands for triple good luck in Chinese numerology.

First launched in the year 2012 by then-Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Chris Bowen, the Business Innovation and Investment Program (BIIP) was first divided into two categories, the Business Innovation Stream and investor streams.

As per the Home Affairs Department, since 2012, over 100,000 overseas migrants have made use of the program to gain residency in the country.

O’Neil in the year 2022, had hinted at plans to review the visa scheme.

“It’s actually costing us on average for every person, because these are people who are generally coming in at quite a late stage of their life, often at the end of their business career and coming to Australia, basically to settle down and retire,” she said at the time.

Australia all-rounder Cameron Green has acknowledged that replacing Steve Smith at number four in Tests is 'tough' but he doesn't feel any pressure. Green's comments come as he gears up for home Test series against West Indies in which he'll be batting at number four and Smith will be opening. The reshuffle comes after David Warner's retirement in Tests following the recently-concluded home series against Pakistan.

"I don't feel any pressure," Green said at a press conference ahead of the first Test which starts January 17 in Adelaide.

"Obviously replacing someone like Steve is pretty tough. But I'm just going to play my own way. But I'm obviously grateful for him putting that in his mind and thinking of me. I think he's super excited to be opening. I think it's a win-win," he added.

There were many contenders for Warner's position including Cameron Bancroft, Matt Renshaw and Marcus Harris. The job, however, went to Smith who had expressed his desire to open the batting. Green, who was dropped from the side during the away Ashes in July last year, was backed by chief selector George Bailey for Smith's number four spot.

"It's always nice when you get that from the coaching staff and the selectors," Green said. "But you've got to also showcase on the main stage."

The all-rounder also thinks that number four is his natural spot where he can take time and get himself in.

"I've always felt maybe a touch rushed at No. 6, especially after Heady [Travis Head], he makes it look a bit too easy at No. 5. I've always felt like I've maybe had to push the game along where I feel like No. 4 is my natural game, where I can take my time and get myself in," he acknowledged.

Green has played 24 Tests so far, scoring 1075 runs at an average of 33 but all of them have come at number 6 or 7. As for his bowling, he has 30 wickets to his name at an average of 36 with a best of 5/27.

Australia cruised to a 2-0 victory in their Asian Cup opener against India on Saturday, with Jackson Irvine and Jordan Bos scoring from close range to launch their title bid.

In front of a deafeningly pro-Indian crowd at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Doha, Australia made hard work of the first half, squandering a few decent chances while the underdogs defended raggedly and eyed opportunities to pounce on the break.

But Irvine opened the scoring just after the restart, the moustachioed midfielder driving home from 10 yards after India goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu came for a cross only to flap it back into the danger zone.

The 2015 Asian Cup champions were in full control from then on, as Indian legs tired and Australia coach Graham Arnold took advantage of the depth in his squad.

Bos doubled Australia's advantage shortly after the 70th minute.

A matter of seconds after coming off the bench, the 21-year-old slotted home from six yards after fellow substitute Riley McGree fizzed the ball hard and low across the box from the byline.

Bos went close with a few minutes remaining when unmarked at the left-hand post, but dragged his shot wide.

Indian fans among the official attendance of 36,253 kept up their fine voice throughout, even as their team's chances of a goal faded with the desert sun.

In a host country with a massive Indian population, Igor Stimac's side can be sure of a rowdy following for all of their games in Group B.

Australian MP Andrew Charlton has lauded the contributions made by Indian diaspora in his country even as he has emphasised on strong India-Australia ties. Speaking to our diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, he said, "We have more than a million Australians of Indian descent, which is one in every 25 Australians and they are among the most educated, the most employed and make some of the biggest contributions in business or politics."

Charlton, who is a member of the House of Representatives of Australia, represents the Division of Parramatta, which is part of the state of New South Wales. Parramatta has a large number of members of the Indian diaspora. The MP is in India for the launch of his book "Australia's pivot to India" which was launched at the India foundation, in the presence of India's energy minister Hardeep Puri.

WION: Sir, if you can talk about your book, and how do you see India-Australia relationship going forward?
Andrew Charlton: India-Australia relationship has never been stronger and the message of this book is that we need to capitalize on that opportunity in order to build a strong partnership between Australia and India, and that partnership will benefit both countries contributing to peace and prosperity of our region.

WION: Can you explain the India-Australia relationship in cricketing terms?
Andrew Charlton: Well, it is very strong. We have two very good teams and what we've been doing against getting those teams not just to play against each other, but to play with each other to achieve great things. And I think the IPL is a good example of that. So IPL is something that brings together many Australian players and coaches and other officials all together inside the majesty of Indian cricket. And for the first time Australia is playing cricket with India, not just against India.

WION: So my final question is on the Indian diaspora, how do you see the role of the diaspora in your country?
Andrew Charlton: Well, the Indian diaspora in the country makes a massive and wonderful contribution to the Australian community. We have more than a million Australians of Indian descent, which is one in every 25 Australians and they are among the most educated, the most employed and make some of the biggest contributions in business or politics, media and culture. And they are a very important way in Australia's multicultural success story. And a testament to the success of Australian diversity

WION: Some irritants as well, we have seen certain incidents of violence and vandalism, particularly when it comes to Khalistanis. If you can talk about that, is this a worry for you?
Andrew Charlton: Politically, the Australian community is very strong and by and large it is a very harmonious community. For me it is extremely important to ensure the safety and security of all Australians, including Indian-Australians who are practicing their faith. There is no place in Australia for any violence against any group, not Hindu groups, not Sikh groups and Australia has put the safety and security of these groups at the top of our priority list.

Eight young people were placed in medically induced comas after they had an overdose of suspected MDMA at a music festival in Melbourne, Australia over the weekend. The incident has increased calls for the legalisation of pill testing in the state.

Paramedics, who were present at the Hardmission electronic music festival organised at Flemington racecourse on Saturday (Jan 6), admitted nine festivalgoers to different hospitals across Melbourne.

Victorian Ambulance Union said that eight people were put in medical induced comas and breathing tubes were inserted in their throats.

“These would have been some of the sickest patients our paramedics would deal with, short of going into cardiac arrest,” said Danny Hill, the Victorian Ambulance Union’s secretary, as reported by The Guardian.

“They were really, really sick. You had patients with high temperatures – some over 41 degrees and seizure activity. In order to be transported, [paramedics] have to do an intervention that is normally left for patients suffering a head injury or a stroke," he added.

Hill said that he hoped the event of Saturday would further push people to reconsider pill testing in Victoria.

“These drugs are not made in batches of seven or eight tablets. They’re made in batches of hundreds or thousands so there are many more of these deadly tablets out there. And there are many more of these raves throughout the summer season. It can only help to bring in pill-testing and try to intercept the drug use as close as you can to the person using the drug," Hill said.

Three men and women have been arrested in Sydney. All four suspects have now been charged with multiple offences, including exporting native reptiles, dealing with the proceeds of crime and participating in a criminal group. If found guilty, they face up to 15 years in prison.

Two men, as per the Guardian, were refused bail.

Previously, in September 2023, the police had set up a taskforce called Strike Force Whyaratta to investigate alleged smugglers after 59 live lizards were intercepted on their way to Hong Kong. They were being kept in nine small containers.

With assistance from state and federal departments, the strike force between December 20 and January 5 executed search warrants and vehicle intercepts in Sydney's Pendle Hill, Panania and East Hills. There, they arrested the woman aged 41 and three men, aged 31, 54 and 59.

During one of their searches in East Hills, officers came across 118 lizards, three snakes, eight eggs. Alongside them, 25 dead lizards were also found.

According to the police, the group were catching live native animals and selling them for a profit to Hong Kong. On average, one lizard sells for AUD$5,000 (or around US$3,350) on the black market. This means that the total haul had the value of around AUD$1.2 million (or around USD$870,000).

Criminal gang planning to smuggle lizards worth almost $1mn nabbed in Australia, 257 animals rescued

Starting Monday (Jan 8), a law that bans Nazi salute and public display of any symbols associated with terror groups came into effect in Australia. The legislation coming into effect comes at a time when antisemitism is on the rise across the globe in the backdrop of the Israel-Hamas war.

Attorney General Mark Dreyfus stated the legislation sent a clear message to those who glorify the Holocaust or terrorist acts.

"This is the first legislation of its kind and will ensure no one in Australia will be allowed to glorify or profit from acts and symbols that celebrate the Nazis and their evil ideology."

Engaging in public display of the Nazi salute, showcasing the Nazi Hakenkreuz (wrongfully referred to as Swastika) or double-sig rune associated with the Schutzstaffel (SS) paramilitary group will be a punishable offence by up to 12 months in prison.

Displaying any symbol associated with proscribed terrorist outfits such as Hamas, Islamic State or the Kurdistan Workers' Party (KKK) would carry similar prison terms.

Notably, the legislation was first introduced in June last year and passed in December.

Previous incidents

In April last year, a group of neo-Nazi men were photographed performing the abhorrent Hitler salute as they celebrated the dictator's birthday at a family pub in Melbourne.

The photograph showed 20-odd men attending the event at the Bavarian, a German-themed outlet in Knox City Shopping Centre and raising their hands in a Nazi salute. One participant held a portrait of Hitler while two others held 'H' letter-shaped balloons, allegedly referring to the phrase 'Heil Hitler' which is often recited while practising the salute.

Hitler and his antisemitic views

Adolf Hitler ruled Germany from 1933 to 1945 with an iron fist. In a quest to create the perfect Aryan race, Hitler started the holocaust of Jews. It is reported that during his tenure, Hitler massacred over 11 million people, of which six million were Jews.

"This is the first legislation of its kind and will ensure no one in Australia will be allowed to glorify or profit from acts and symbols that celebrate the Nazis and their evil ideology." Engaging in public display of the Nazi salute, showcasing the Nazi Hakenkreuz (wrongfully referred to as Swastika) or double-sig rune associated with the Schutzstaffel (SS) paramilitary group will be a punishable offence by up to 12 months in prison. Displaying any symbol associated with proscribed terrorist outfits such as Hamas, Islamic State or the Kurdistan Workers' Party (KKK) would carry similar prison terms. Notably, the legislation was first introduced in June last year and passed in December. Previous incidents In April last year, a group of neo-Nazi men were photographed performing the abhorrent Hitler salute as they celebrated the dictator's birthday at a family pub in Melbourne. Australia: Supreme Court allows woman to remove sperm from her dead husband

The Supreme Court of Western Australia allowed a 62-year-old woman to remove sperm from the dead body of her husband so that it could be used in posthumous fertilisation.

An urgent court application was submitted by the woman after the death of her 61-year-old husband late last year. The dead body of her husband was taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, however, the court was informed that the woman was forced to apply for an order after the hospital promptly failed to make a “designated officer” available who could look into the woman's request of removing the sperm from the dead body of her husband and storing it, while the sperm still remained viable.

While hearing the application, the court got to know that the couple - whose names were not published due to legal reasons - had two children, however, both of them tragically died in separate accidents.

After the deaths of their children, the couple had discussed having another child, however, the woman was advised by a fertility expert that she could not conceive because of her age. When the man's sperm were tested, it was found that it remained viable.

The court was also informed that a 20-year-old cousin had volunteered to go through the IVF procedure and become a surrogate for the couple. However, the couple was living in a different country, and the woman thought the couple was required to legally live in the country for a particular period of time before going ahead with the surrogacy.

Couple failed to go for surrogacy

However, the couple missed the opportunity to move because of the pandemic, work commitments and the death of the woman's mother-in-law. While giving a verdict on the application, Judge Fiona Seaward permitted the woman to remove the sperm, however, not use it because that would need a separate court order.

“These orders are limited to permitting the removal of the spermatozoa and do not constitute authorisation for the spermatozoa to be used by the applicant, and do not in any way consider whether the applicant can or could meet any statutory criteria in that regard,” the judge said.

Currently, Western Australia does not permit posthumous fertilisation. The woman for taking the next step and using the sperm needs to apply for the case to get transferred to another jurisdiction which allows the procedure.

Seaward, in her decision, also reprimanded the hospital for not being able to make a “designated officer” available in a timely manner to the woman, which would have stopped the woman from filing a hasty court application.

“It is disappointing that it appears that, once again, an applicant has been required to attend court on an urgent basis and in traumatic circumstances to obtain an order that may, if the designated officer considered all criteria to be met, be granted in a faster and more streamlined manner,” she said.

Chasing 317, Pakistan seemed in control for a bit with 129/3 at tea on day 4 but eventually got all out for 237.

Pakistan's middle order kept them in the game but none of them could stitch together a bigger partnership which could taken them over the line. Mohammad Rizwan and Agha Salman then added 57 runs for the sixth wicket and brought the required runs under 100. It was Cummins once who broke the partnership by dismissing Rizwan for 35. Pakistan's lower order then couldn't offer much resistance as Cummins and Starc walked all over them and took the next four wickets in the next 7.2 overs.

For Pakistan, skipper Shan Masood top scored with 60 while Agha Salman scored a valiant 50. From Australia, Mitchell Starc took 4/55 apart from Cummins' 5/49 - his second five-wicket haul in the match. This was also Cummins' second 10-wicket haul in his 57 matches to go with 11 five-fors. He also reached 250 Test wickets with the third wicket in the second innings and has 252 in total.

Australia: At least two killed, 110,000 homes without power as storm hits east coast

A massive forgotten colony – which was once off the coast of Australia and was home to hundreds of thousands of people – has now been found by the scientists.

Various signs of human life and artefacts were discovered on Sahul's northwest shelf, which was located off the coast of Kimberley's northern region on a piece of land that was connected to New Guinea, as per a study published in Quaternary Science Reviews.

The piece of land, which was drowned, was most probably a thriving ecosystem which existed in the Late Pleistocene period that dates back 2.5 million years.

The now-submerged landmass was spread in the area of 250,000 square miles which was 1.6 times the size of the United Kingdom.

The continental shelf, which was once believed to be a desert, was filled with rivers and streams, habitable fresh and saltwater lakes, as well as a large inland sea, which is likely to have supported around 50,000 and 500,000 people.

As per the scientists, the shelf may have also served as a bridge for people to walk into Australia before the country turned into the massive island it is today.

Continental shelf drowned amid global sea level rise

Nearly half of the shelf had drowned around 12,000 to 9,000 years ago which marked the first of two phases of rapid global sea level rise.

“This likely caused a retreat of human populations, registering as peaks in occupational intensity at archaeological sites,” wrote the scientists.

The people who funnelled into an archipelago on the continental shelf became the “first maritime explorers from Wallacea, creating a familiar environment for their maritime economies to adapt to the vast terrestrial continent of Sahul.”

The scientists have been working to uncover the lost colony's history and plan to carry on the reconstruction of the palaeoecology of the landscapes.

“Now submerged continental margins clearly played an important role in early human expansions across the world,” stated the study.

“The rise in undersea archaeology in Australia will contribute to a growing worldwide picture of early human migration and the impact of climate change on Late Pleistocene human populations,” it added.

The people who funnelled into an archipelago on the continental shelf became the “first maritime explorers from Wallacea, creating a familiar environment for their maritime economies to adapt to the vast terrestrial continent of Sahul.” Watch: Bushfire in Pilliga State Forest ravage Australia The scientists have been working to uncover the lost colony's history and plan to carry on the reconstruction of the palaeoecology of the landscapes. “Now submerged continental margins clearly played an important role in early human expansions across the world,” stated the study. “The rise in undersea archaeology in Australia will contribute to a growing worldwide picture of early human migration and the impact of climate change on Late Pleistocene human populations,” it added. Heatwave warnings were issued in large parts of Australia on Sunday (Dec 24) amid scorching temperatures. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, authorities warned of a high bushfire risk in many parts of the Western Australia state. The weather forecaster issued heatwave alerts for the western state, the Northern Territory, and the eastern Queensland state, warning temperatures in some regions could hit around 45 degrees Celsius. Data from the weather forecaster showed that in Western Australia's capital city of Perth, a maximum temperature of 35 degrees Celsius was forecast for Sunday, more than five degrees above the December mean. Over 20 bushfire warnings issued in Western Australia More than 20 bushfire warnings were issued in Western Australia including an uncontrolled one near Pemberton, a town of around 5,000 residents. Citing a statement from the state's Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Reuters reported that more difficult weather was expected from Sunday afternoon as hot, dry, and windy conditions hit a large section of Western Australia, including Perth. "Weather conditions over the next few days will put pressure on containment lines and potentially increase fire activity," the statement added. The agency also warned of a high fire danger for many areas of Western Australia and said more than 1,000 firefighters had been fighting blazes statewide over the past five days. Australia's east scorched due to El Nino Reuters further reported on Sunday that the eastern part of Australia was this month scorched due to El Nino, a climate pattern in which unusually warm Pacific Ocean temperatures cause heatwaves, cyclones, droughts, and wildfires. Earlier in December, a heatwave warning affected areas in every state and territory, except for Tasmania. (With inputs from agencies)

Travellers among us may have had the experience of having been overcharged by a hotel for some minor reason. It certainly is a pain to argue with the hotel management for a refund while they throw all sorts of terms and conditions you unknowingly accepted.

Charging for some genuine reason is still understandable. But a woman staying at a hotel in Australia was shocked as she was charged almost 1000 USD after she used a hairdryer.

The woman, referred to in the local media by the pseudonym Kelly, had booked a room at Novotel Perth Langley before a music concert.

As the hour of the concert approached, Kelly had a shower, styled her hair and then was in for a shock.

She was greeted by firefighters in her room. They went back but three days later, when she was leaving the room, she found that the hotel charged her about $940 extra. When she asked the hotel management, she was told that she was charged a fire department call-out fee.

“So if you’re at a buffet and the alarm goes off are they going to charge you for burning your toast?” she added.

She sent emails to the hotel and called them repeatedly. After a while, the hotel reportedly stopped taking her calls and didn't even let her talk to a manager.

However, a manager refunded the charge a few days later.

High and dry: Using a hotel hair dryer costs woman around $1,000 in Australia

A bride has come up with an idea to overcome the disappointment that comes when the people don't show up at the weddings - a 'no-show fee'.

As per a report by the New York Post, an Australian bride considered imposing this fine after 10 guests cancelled at the last minute to her interstate wedding after sending their confirmations nearly six months ago.

The payment to the venue was non-refundable, as per the reports.

"It's now one week out from the wedding and I have already given the confirmed numbers to the venue and paid the outstanding amount, which was $12,426," the woman said while speaking on the "She's on the Money" podcast.

"Within the last week, ten guests, who had previously RSVP'd, said that they were coming and have now cancelled citing that it's too expensive for them to travel interstate," she added.

The woman further said that if she did not "scramble to cover their seats," she would be losing out on approximately $1,336.

"Is it reasonable to request that they cover these costs themselves?" she said.

The bride also said that the formal invites were sent to the guests in the month of January with the majority of attendees sending out confirmations in July.

She further shared messages from the people who did not make it to the wedding which read, "So sorry, I know we RSVP'd yes and the wedding is next week but we just can't afford to travel interstate at the moment."

Woman's take on situation divides internet

The podcast's audience was left divided by the woman's take on the situation with many backing her decision saying that the guests should pay for their late cancellations.

"No one books flights for an interstate wedding the week prior. The guest is 100% at fault here and is not a nice friend for doing this," one listener said.

"Given they said YES in July - they had almost six months to ensure they could save for it. Very disappointing they committed to coming but then didn't plan to be able to afford it," a listener said.

"Any other investment other than relationships has cancellation policies lol, so it makes sense to me that you owe the couple money or at least it would be the right thing to do... if you cancel late," said another.

"If you can't afford to cover the cost then have a cheaper wedding," said a person.

"This is the bride and groom's event so it's up to them to cover the cost and NOT the people they chose to invite," said another.

A foiled, alleged kidnapping plot led Australian police to discover a whopping 700 kg of cocaine Monday morning (Dec 18).

According to New South Wales (NSW) police officials, a crime squad along with local police was responding to a break-and-enter report in Sydney’s plush neighbourhood.

“When officers arrived, they allegedly found four men dressed in all black and wearing face coverings sitting in a Toyota Yaris in the underground carpark,” the NSW police said in a statement.

In the car, police allege they found a 60cm crowbar, gloves, a meat cleaver, a bladed knife, a box cutter, flashing light bars and zip ties – items they say were consistent with a kidnapping attempt.

The four men had entered a residential complex and wanted to rob the 24-year-old occupant.

However, when the police carried out a search operation inside the victim’s house, they were shocked to discover “722kg of cocaine with an estimated street value exceeding $1 billion.”

The victim-turned-offender was also arrested by the police later, amounting to five arrests in total at the scene.

A seizure of this quantity was “unseen” for the NSW police, the state crime command’s robbery and serious crime squad commander Detective Superintendent Joseph Doueihi said.

“The seizure of cocaine is one of the biggest single seizures that the NSW police force have been involved in that doesn’t involve drug importation,” he said, reported News.com.

He added: “It’s incredible, an absolutely fantastic result. For NSW Police, the seizure of this quantity is unseen. I’m very pleased with my investigators.”

As per the officials, the 24-year-old man will be charged with the supply of a prohibited drug in a “large commercial quantity” and with knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime.

On the other hand, the four men, aged between 19 and 24, will be charged with aggravated break and enter with the intention to steal, wearing a disguise and being armed with an intent to commit an indictable offence.
