In a shocking incident on a beach in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW), a great white shark washed up ashore. The 3.5-metre shark was seen swimming along the Kingscliff beach on the Tweed Coast on Monday (Mar 4) morning as lifeguards tracked its progress.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened?</h2>

The female shark was reportedly seen struggling along the shore before it washed up on the beach. Subsequently, a veterinary team from Sea World on the Gold Coast were called to assess the shark.&nbsp;

The shark was later euthanised and a bulldozer was called to safely carry it away for necropsy. Sea World shark bay supervisor Siobhan Houlihan told ABC that the shark was identified as a mature female. &nbsp;

“We’ve come down to see if there’s anything that we can do to help this animal,” said Houlihan. “Unfortunately, as we’ve got here, she’s beached herself and is not in a good way.”

She said that the team would conduct a “full necropsy” to ascertain what caused this unfortunate event to take place. Houlihan also noted that it was extremely unusual for sharks to beach themselves.&nbsp;

The Sea World, in a statement, said that the shark had been in poor condition and the thrashing behaviour of the shark observed before it got beached was not normal for the species.&nbsp;

“Sadly, the shark was in a poor condition after beaching and the Sea World veterinary team administered medications to make the shark comfortable while it was humanely euthanised,” said a Sea World spokesperson, as quoted by the Guardian.&nbsp;

“The shark appeared to have underlying health issues, with the thrashing behaviour seen in the shallows prior to the beaching not typical for the species,” the spokesperson added.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Shocking’</h2>

The rare sight attracted a large group of beachgoers given that while sharks are often spotted in the waters around Kingscliff beach, but it was very unusual to see one on the beach.&nbsp;

Team India has moved to the first place in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table after Australia defeated New Zealand in the first Test in Wellington. In the two-match Test series, Australia took a 1-0 lead against New Zealand with a 172-run win at the Basin Reserve, Wellington. Australia beat their trans-Tasman rivals in the series opener as Cameron Green smashed 174 runs and Nathan Lyon secured a ten-wicket haul, including a six-fer in the second innings. However, Australia's victory against New Zealand helped India reach the top of the WTC points table. World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 Cycle Points Table Here are the latest WTC standings for the ongoing cycle: Standings Team Played Won Lost Draw Points PCT 1 India 8 5 2 1 62 64.58 2 New Zealand 5 3 2 0 36 60 3 Australia 11 7 3 1 78 59.09 4 Bangladesh 2 1 1 0 12 50 5 Pakistan 5 2 3 0 22 36.66 6 West Indies 4 1 2 1 16 33.33 7 South Africa 4 1 3 0 12 25 8 England 9 3 5 1 21 19.44 9 Sri Lanka 2 0 2 0 0 0 How did India move to the top after Australia's win? New Zealand's defeat against Australia means they have 36 points in five matches. Their loss reduced their points percentage (PCT) to 60, below India's 64.58. Moreover, Australia stayed in third place despite the victory, even though their PCT went up from 55 to 59.09. The rest of the table remained the same. If India wins the five-match Test series against England in Dharamshala, they can extend their lead at the top. Their PCT will reach 68.51 if they win against England. If that happens, India will stay at the top even if New Zealand wins the second Test in Christchurch. New Zealand missed an opportunity to win the match against Australia. After having the Aussies at nine down for 267 in the first innings, New Zealand allowed Green to score his second Test century and then form a match-turning partnership of 116 runs with Nathan Lyon. This partnership helped Australia to score 383 runs. New Zealand's batting lineup struggled against Lyon's spin, with only Glenn Phillips able to apply himself. Though New Zealand fought bacl, conceding a 204-run lead in the first innings made it difficult for them. They were eventually all out for 196 in the fourth innings, despite a good innings from Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell. This match marks the 11th consecutive Test where New Zealand have failed to beat Australia at home. They have lost ten games and had one draw since their win in 1993. Scientists as per reports are planning to plant "living fossils" of Wollemi pines, an around145 million old tree that is believed to have gone extinct in 1994. Where will these living fossils be planted? Well, that's a secret.

<h2>Why does the tree matter?</h2>

The tree&nbsp;just a decade ago was believed to be lost, however in 1994, hikers in Australia's Blue Mountains stumbled upon a relict of these ancient conifers, reported&nbsp;Live Science.

Today, only around 60 of the tree specimens remain in Wollemi National Park. However, in spite of conservation efforts, a pathogenic water mould called Phytophthora cinnamomi that causes dieback or a gradual deterioration in the tree's health, sometimes leading to its death threatens the ancient tree's existence. It is also threatened by rampant wildfires that intermittently rage through this region of New South Wales.

What's amazing about the tree is that it is more than 145 million years old, and since then it has barely changed in appearance — as evident by fossils that date back to the Cretaceous period (145 million to 66 million years ago).

<h2>Saving in secret&nbsp;</h2>

Since its rediscovery, the tree has been grown in botanical gardens and private spaces around the world. Now, the tree saviours—the Wollemi Pine Recovery Team, which is a partnership between Australian government scientists and conservationists, has begun the process to reintroduce Wollemi pine seedlings to three sites in Wollemi National Park.

"The sites comprise high-elevation sandstone gorges that are sufficiently deep, narrow and steep-sided to provide refugia from frequent, intense wildfires and drought," said a representative of the Wollemi Pine Recovery Team, in a statement emailed to Live Science.&nbsp;

"There was no evidence of infection with pathogenic Phytophthora species at either site when surveyed immediately prior to the translocations, and there is a low (but non-zero) likelihood of unauthorised visitation due to their remoteness," it further said.

Already, there have been multiple transplantation efforts: in 2012, 2019, and 2021. Over 400 saplings were planted in 2019, but only 58 saplings made it to 2023. Many of the rest were destroyed by bushfires.&nbsp;

In 2021, around 502 trees were planted to replace the ones lost, but in 2022 landslides caused by heavy rains destroyed&nbsp;about 80 per cent of the trees.

Now, to prevent introduction of Phytophthora to the sites, the&nbsp;location of the trees&nbsp;are concealed from the public. Experts while visiting the&nbsp;site limit their time near the plants and repeatedly disinfect their shoes to reduce the likelihood they will track in traces of the water mould. Even a few spores might spell death for this nascent population.

However, the efforts to save the tree will take decades, if not centuries, as they grow less than 0.4 inches (1.02 centimetres) a year.&nbsp;

"Given the slow growth and maturation of Wollemi pines in the wild, this is likely to take many decades, if not centuries. Given predicted increases in the frequency and severity of fire and drought due to climate change — arguably the two greatest threats to these populations — their long-term security is far from guaranteed," said the researchers.

Facebook's parent company Meta on Friday (Mar 1) announced that they will stop making payments to news publishers in Australia for the content which appears on Facebook.&nbsp;

This step has ignited a fresh battle with Canberra which was ahead of other countries in bringing a law which forced social media platforms to strike licencing deals.

News publishers as well as governments of countries like Australia have claimed that social media giants like Facebook and Google unfairly benefit from the links to news articles which appear on their platforms.&nbsp;

In the wake of these discussions, Meta has decreased its promotion of news as well as political content and has claimed that news links are now only visible on the feeds of a fraction of users.

Meta has announced that it will discontinue the tab which promotes news on Facebook in Australia and the United States. It added that the news tab was pulled by the platform last year in the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

As a result, "we will not enter into new commercial deals for traditional news content in these countries and will not offer new Facebook products specifically for news publishers", Meta said&nbsp;in the statement.

<h2>Meta vs Australian government&nbsp;</h2>

Meta's decision has pitted the company against the Australian government which, as per a 2021 law opposed by the social media giant, enjoys the power to appoint a mediator who decides what amount big tech firms pay for the news links.

In a joint statement, Australia's Communications Minister Michelle Rowland and Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones said, "Meta's decision to no longer pay for news content in a number of jurisdictions represents a dereliction of its commitment to the sustainability of Australian news media."

"The decision removes a significant source of revenue for Australian news media businesses. Australian news publishers deserve fair compensation for the content they provide," Rowland added.

The Australian police&nbsp;on Tuesday (Feb 27) said that they found two bodies in the New South Wales (NSW) town of Bungonia during their search for same-sex couple Jesse Baird and Luke Davies. This comes days after NSW police officer Beau Lamarre who reportedly once dated Baird was charged with their murder.&nbsp;

The police believe that they have found the bodies of&nbsp;Baird, 26, an entertainment journalist and his&nbsp;boyfriend Davies, 29, who was a Qantas flight attendant. The pair had been presumed dead.&nbsp;

<h2>Police discover two bodies</h2>

The detectives investigating the case – which has gripped Australia and is believed to be the first suspected murder carried out by an NSW police officer in decades – on Tuesday afternoon said that a crime scene had been established at a second property in rural Bungonia around 160 kilometres south-west of Sydney.&nbsp;

“We believe we have located two bodies,” the NSW police commissioner, Karen Webb, told reporters. She added, “The families have been notified. We are very confident we have located Luke and Jesse.”

The bodies were found in surfboard bags under a fence at a property in rural Bungonia and attempts had been made to cover them with “rocks and debris,” said Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

The bodies were discovered four days after Senior Constable Lamarre, 28, was charged with their murders, and co-operated with the detectives, said the police.&nbsp;

Police assistant commissioner Michael Fitzgerald, on Tuesday morning, said that it was the first time since he had been arrested that the accused “willingly told us information”.&nbsp;

<h2>About the case</h2>

Doherty said that the police would allege in court that there was “some type of relationship at some stage” between the NSW officer and the TV presenter. The relationship, according to the police, “did not end well”.&nbsp;

The police believe that the pair was&nbsp;killed on February 19 in Baird’s inner-city home in Paddington and that the two “surf bags” had been used to transport the deceased couple in a white van to the rural property where the bodies were found.&nbsp;

So far, the investigators also found a bullet matching Lamarre’s work-issued gun, a “significant” amount of blood, and upturned furniture in Baird’s home where they believe the murder took place.&nbsp;

On February 19, Baird’s neighbours had heard gunshots, the police say, but they were not reported until days later.&nbsp;

Lamarre made “partial admissions” about the alleged murders to an acquaintance who is said to have accompanied him to a separate property in Bungonia – not where the bodies were found.

The NSW officer had left his female acquaintance after breaking the lock on the property and returned around 30 minutes later.&nbsp;

The police believe that the acquaintance whose identity was immediately clear was an “innocent agent” and said that she was fully cooperating with the officers.&nbsp;

Australia's consumer price inflation has maintained a two-year low in January, defying expectations of a slight increase, according to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday. <o:p></o:p>

According to Reuters, the monthly consumer price index (CPI) revealed an annual pace of 3.4 per cent in January, consistent with December figures and below market predictions of 3.6 per cent. <o:p></o:p>

The trimmed mean, a key indicator of core inflation, also witnessed a slight decrease, falling from 4.0 per cent in December to 3.8 per cent in January. <o:p></o:p>

With inflation figures remaining subdued, market expectations lean towards the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) refraining from further interest rate hikes.<o:p></o:p>

"Inflation excluding volatile items and holiday travel slowed to 4.1 per cent from 4.2 per cent," noted the Australian Bureau of Statistics. <o:p></o:p>

The data highlighted a monthly CPI decline of 0.3 per cent in January, driven by notable decreases in holiday travel, clothing, and petrol prices. <o:p></o:p>

Holiday travel, in particular, witnessed a substantial slump of 5.2 per cent compared to the previous month. <o:p></o:p>

These patterns indicate challenges in specific sectors and contribute to the overall stability of inflation at a lower rate, discouraging the need for immediate rate adjustments.<o:p></o:p>

Despite the Reserve Bank of Australia's previous efforts to combat rising inflation by increasing interest rates, the persistently low inflation figures indicate that further rate hikes may not be imminent. <o:p></o:p>

The RBA, which has elevated interest rates by 425 basis points since May 2022, currently stands at a 12-year high of 4.35 per cent. <o:p></o:p>

However, the central bank has not ruled out the possibility of additional hikes if necessary to align with its target inflation band of 2-3 per cent. <o:p></o:p>

Financial markets, however, express confidence that the RBA is concluding its tightening phase, with swaps implying a 60 per cent chance of a first rate cut in August and an overall easing of 38 basis points by year-end.<o:p></o:p>

As inflation remains subdued, the Australian dollar saw minimal change at $0.6547, reflecting the market's steady stance. <o:p></o:p>

Three-year bond futures also held at 96.26, indicating a cautious yet stable outlook. <o:p></o:p>

Australia's consumer price inflation has maintained a two-year low in January, defying expectations of a slight increase, according to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday. According to Reuters, the monthly consumer price index (CPI) revealed an annual pace of 3.4 per cent in January, consistent with December figures and below market predictions of 3.6 per cent. The trimmed mean, a key indicator of core inflation, also witnessed a slight decrease, falling from 4.0 per cent in December to 3.8 per cent in January. With inflation figures remaining subdued, market expectations lean towards the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) refraining from further interest rate hikes. "Inflation excluding volatile items and holiday travel slowed to 4.1 per cent from 4.2 per cent," noted the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The data highlighted a monthly CPI decline of 0.3 per cent in January, driven by notable decreases in holiday travel, clothing, and petrol prices. Holiday travel, in particular, witnessed a substantial slump of 5.2 per cent compared to the previous month. These patterns indicate challenges in specific sectors and contribute to the overall stability of inflation at a lower rate, discouraging the need for immediate rate adjustments. Despite the Reserve Bank of Australia's previous efforts to combat rising inflation by increasing interest rates, the persistently low inflation figures indicate that further rate hikes may not be imminent. The RBA, which has elevated interest rates by 425 basis points since May 2022, currently stands at a 12-year high of 4.35 per cent. However, the central bank has not ruled out the possibility of additional hikes if necessary to align with its target inflation band of 2-3 per cent. Financial markets, however, express confidence that the RBA is concluding its tightening phase, with swaps implying a 60 per cent chance of a first rate cut in August and an overall easing of 38 basis points by year-end. As inflation remains subdued, the Australian dollar saw minimal change at $0.6547, reflecting the market's steady stance. Three-year bond futures also held at 96.26, indicating a cautious yet stable outlook. (With inputs from Reuters)

Australian police are investigating claims Taylor Swift's dad assaulted a photographer when the star and her entourage were disembarking a superyacht in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

"Police have been told a 71-year-old man allegedly assaulted a 51-year-old man at Neutral Bay Wharf about 2:30 am, before leaving the location," police spokeswoman Alicia McCumstie told AFP.&nbsp;

"The younger man reported the incident and inquiries are now under way by officers attached to North Shore Police Area Command."&nbsp;

Australian police do not usually formally identify people alleged to have committed a crime.&nbsp;

But a law enforcement source and the alleged victim, veteran photographer Ben McDonald, both told AFP the man was Swift's dad, Scott Swift.

McDonald said he had been photographing the US pop icon on a "super yacht" in Sydney Harbour, an apparent celebration after the last of her four sellout gigs in the city.&nbsp;

<h2>'Punched me in the chops'</h2>

McDonald alleges Swift's security detail put an umbrella in his face to prevent him from taking photographs as the singing star was walking down the jetty to a waiting vehicle.&nbsp;

After Swift departed, McDonald claimed a man confronted him and "took it further". "He punched me in the chops," McDonald said.

"I didn't know who he was," said McDonald, who said he initially believed it may have been an overzealous local security contractor "trying to impress the Americans".

A spokesperson for Taylor Swift responded to the allegation with allegations of their own, claiming there had been pushing and aggression from unnamed people at the waterside.

"Two individuals were aggressively pushing their way towards Taylor, grabbing at her security personnel, and threatening to throw a female staff member into the water," the spokesperson told AFP.

Swift's representative did not comment on the alleged assault by the star's father, or respond to requests for further clarification about what took place.

Australian police on Friday charged one of their own officers with the double murder of a TV presenter and his flight attendant boyfriend, whose bodies have yet to be found.

Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said a 28-year-old serving police constable was charged with two counts of murder, after a high-profile three-day search across Sydney.

Earlier this week, the chance discovery of bloodied clothes in a suburban rubbish bin led detectives to the home of former red carpet host and entertainment journalist Jesse Baird, 26.&nbsp;

On searching Baird's inner-city flat, detectives said they found "a large amount of blood" and held "grave concerns" for both him and his boyfriend, Qantas flight attendant Luke Davies, 29.&nbsp;

The pair are presumed dead.

A projectile found at the apartment matched that of a police-issue firearm.&nbsp;

The weapon has since been found inside a police station safe.

The accused officer was said to have been in a relationship with Baird until recently, when it ended badly.

Baird had been a presenter on Australia's Network Ten.

On Friday the officer turned himself in to Bondi Police Station, near the country's famed beach.

Footage of the arrest shows him handcuffed and escorted into the building wearing a dark baseball cap and sneakers.&nbsp;

He remains in custody and police will oppose granting bail.

Australian media reported that the suspect had been a celebrity chaser and blogger before joining the police force, and had been photographed with Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Ben Stiller and scores of others.

He was previously investigated over the aggressive tasering of an Aboriginal man in 2020, after video of the incident emerged online.

News reports from 2014 indicate that he came out publicly as gay by throwing a letter onstage at a Lady Gaga concert, which the star read out to a crowd that included his sister.&nbsp;

"Charges have been submitted for two counts of murder," said Doherty, adding that the police focus was now on locating the bodies of the two missing men.

Police allege the remains of the two men were transported in a white van and disposed of.

Forensic examinations of the van are ongoing.

"It's really important that we do locate the bodies, not only for the cause of death but also for answers for the family who are grieving," said Doherty. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Australia, on Tuesday (Feb 20) outlined its decade-long plan and announced a major overhaul of the Navy’s surface combatant fleet saying that it would more than double the number of warships as well as add six large and “optionally crewed” naval vessels heavily armed with missiles as a part of the new $11 billion reshaping of the country’s naval forces.&nbsp;

Under the sweeping overhaul, Australia will have 26 combat-ready warships up from the current fleet of 11 ships. “It is the largest fleet that we will have since the end of the Second World War,” said Defence Minister Richard Marles.&nbsp;

He also&nbsp;cited concerns over rising geopolitical tensions amid&nbsp;competition between the United States, its allies and China&nbsp;in the Asia-Pacific region.

Canberra has also reduced its order of Hunter-class frigates from nine to six, according to the new plan “Enhanced Lethality Surface Combatant Fleet.”&nbsp;

The new fleet would include three upgraded Hobart-class destroyers, 11 new general-purpose frigates to replace six remaining Anzac-class frigates, six new LOSVs and 25 minor war vessels, including six Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs).

The Hunter class frigates will be built at the Osborne shipyard in South Australia, said Australia’s Department of Defence in a statement.&nbsp;

The announcement also comes after the government received an independent analysis, led by the retired US&nbsp;Navy Vice-Admiral William Hilarides, which found that the current and planned surface combatant fleet was “not appropriate for the strategic environment we face, noting it is the oldest fleet Navy has operated in its history”.

The independent analysis also urged the Albanese government for “immediate implementation” of the overhaul citing the threat to Australia’s national security.&nbsp;

Australia’s oldest currently serving warship, HMAS Anzac, as per the plan, will be immediately decommissioned ahead of the gradual replacement of the ageing Anzac-class fleet with new frigates.&nbsp;

<h2>Australia increases defence spending</h2>

To implement the shake-up to the current Australian navy fleet, the government has announced an additional $1.7 billion over the forward estimates and $11.1 billion over the next decade in defence for “accelerated delivery” for the navy’s future surface combatant fleet and to expand the country’s shipbuilding industry.&nbsp;

“This will be the largest surface combatant force we’ve operated in generations. It will also be, in time, the most lethal,” said Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond.&nbsp;

Australia's star opener David Warner says that he's expecting the New Zealand crowd to come at them hard in the upcoming five-T20I series. The series would be Warner's last bilateral outing ahead of his planned retirement after T20 World Cup in June later this year. Notably, Warner has already announced his retirement from Tests and ODIs but has left the door open for ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 shall the team need&nbsp;him.

“I enjoy playing here,” Warner said on the eve of first T20I. “It’s about coming out and trying to put my best foot forward, and score runs."

The batter, however, remembered Australia's 2016 tour of New Zealand when the players were abused.

“The crowd, yeah, they got personal, but if they have to get personal, that’s their character ... if you want to pay your money to come and abuse people, you have to go back and lay in your own bed."

Speaking on his plans once he hangs his boots from international cricket, Warner said he would still play franchise cricket worldwide as he loves this game and owes a lot to it.&nbsp;

"I will definitely keep playing all the franchise leagues for another couple of years," Warner said, dismissing rumours of him opting to play for Australia beyond the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA.

An exceptionally dry weather in Australia has caused a historic two-month delay in the annual migration of the country's Christmas Island red crabs, the news agency Reuters reported on Monday (Feb 19). The crabs begin their annual journey from the island's interior to the sea where they mate. However, climate change has put a dampener on this season's migration.

Speaking to Reuters, Brendan Tiernan, the coordinator for the Parks Australia Threatened Species Field Program, said this year is the first time in history that the crabs have migrated as late as February.

“The last six to nine months of 2023 was exceptionally dry, so dry that when the crabs would normally migrate in October and November, we had no rainfall, and they didn’t migrate and that dry period continued into January this year. So for the first time that we have recorded, the crabs have spawned in February, albeit in lower numbers,” Tiernan said.

“The false start that we had in December, they got going with a couple of millimetres (of rain) and the ones that started to migrate in December, quickly realised that they made a mistake and turned back,” he added.

The island red crabs have a population of more than 100 million. The annual migration sees the crabs' journey from the island off the coast of Western Australia to the ocean, where they mate.

The females stay behind in burrows near the ocean to hatch their eggs and the males return inland.

Tiernan also told Reuters if rain doesn't come or it isn't sustained and the crabs start migrating, they will "either hunker down, so they’ll just sort of wait it out to see if the rains will return, or if they haven’t gone too far, they will actually return to the forest.”
