An Australian Court confirmed that a parliament staffer raped his colleague inside the country's Parliament. The Court's confirmation comes three years after the allegations were first made. Former government adviser Bruce Lehrmann was accused of sexual assault inside the parliament. Lehrmann had denied the allegations and also sued a media Network for defamation for airing an interview with the victim.

Archaeologists carried out an analysis of more than 4,000 stone artefacts which have been found on an island off northwestern Australia. The findings helped in creating a picture of the kind of life the Aboriginals lived tens of thousands of years ago.

In the discovery, it was revealed that the Indigenous people had "long-term connections" with modern-day Australia, according to David Zeanah, who is an anthropologist at California State University, Sacramento. Zeanah is also the lead author of a new study which described the analysis.

As per the study, which was published in the journal Quaternary Science Reviews on April 1, the diverse artefacts discovered on the island also found intriguing insights regarding the movement of people between the mainland and the island of Australia, especially when the last ice age peaked between 29,000 and 19,000 years ago.

In those times, the sea levels were very low and exposed the continental shelf between Australia and what is today called Barrow Island.

Speaking to Live Science, Zeanah said that thousands of years ago it would have created the high plateau of a vast, continuous plain which runs across 4,200 square miles (10,800 square km).

The archaeologists were already aware of the people who once lived on the island because of a trove of archaeological evidence which was left behind in rock shelters, once known as Boodie Cave.

However, for the new research, the scientists tried to understand beyond the island's caves and explore various open-air deposits present across Barrow Island.

In the next three years, the scientists looked into 4,400 slicing, cutting and grinding tools from a mix of sites. The researchers were surprised by the variety in the compositions of the artefacts.

Most of the tools discovered in the caves were made out of limestone which is found in abundance on the island.

Those found at the open-air sites were mostly made from rocks, which included igneous and sandstone, and matched sources found on mainland Australia.

The suspect who stabbed six people to death and injured 12 others in Sydney on Saturday was identified as 40-year-old Joel Cauchi. Australian media reported on Sunday (Apr 14) that Cauchi was shot dead by the police. Witnesses said Cauchi, wearing shorts and an Australian national rugby league jersey, ran through the Westfield Bondi Junction mall with a knife, randomly attacking people. Some shoppers and staff at the mall tried to stop him and crowds sheltered in shuttered shops. Addressing a press conference, New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke said that the police had spoken to Cauchi's family following the attack. Who is Joel Cauchi? Cauchi was a resident of Queensland and was previously known to police and had bought a storage unit in Sydney. A report by the news agency Reuters said that they had searched a small storage facility he had recently rented but found no major evidence to indicate an attack was coming. Cauchi's Facebook page showed that he worked as an English tutor at an online institution. A look at Cauchi's social media posts Six days before the rampage, Cauchi posted on social media seeking surfing companions at Bondi Beach. Australian media reported that he often posted in hobby groups on Facebook seeking friendship or tips on activities such as astrophotography through the years. In December 2020, Cauchi wrote on an outdoor adventures page to ask members whether they would join him in a shooting session. “Hi, I am looking for groups of people who shoot guns, including handguns, to meet up with, chat with, and get to know. Please send me a DM if you can help me out! I live in Brisbane by the way," he said in the post which is now being flooded with angry comments. "Thank goodness you didn't get your hands on a gun...the devastation you have caused is horrible enough," a Facebook user reacted to the above post. (With inputs from agencies)

Who is Joel Cauchi, the Sydney stabbing suspect who was shot dead?

Six people were killed and a nine-month-old baby was among several others injured when an attacker wielding a knife went on a stabbing spree at a crowded shopping centre in Sydney, Australia on Saturday (Apr 13) afternoon, till a woman police officer acted alone, confronted the accused and shot him dead, said the New South Wales police.

“He turned faced her raised a knife. She discharged a firearm and that person is now deceased,” Cooke added. He also said that early investigations suggest the man acted alone and that there is no ongoing threat.

“This all happened very, very quickly - the officer that was in the vicinity attended on her own, was guided to the location of the offender by people who were in the centre.”

“She took the actions that she did saving a range of people’s lives; an inspector, a senior police officer - she was on her own. She engaged immediately on her arrival to the scene,” Cooke said about the officer who shot the alleged attacker.

An eyewitness said the woman officer tackled the situation very calmly and asked the attacker to drop his knife. However, the attacker lunged at the cop with his knife.

Six killed, 12 injured in stabbing at Sydney shopping centre; attacker shot dead by woman cop

Sydney attack: Assailant identified as 40-years-old Joel Cauchi, probe underway

Hundreds of people have been evacuated from a mall in Sydney amid reports of multiple people who have been stabbed inside. The New South Wales ambulance says seven people had been taken to the city's hospitals including a baby and mother.

Sydney attack: Six killed in knife attack at mall, attackers shot dead by cops

New South Wales Police in a news briefing on Saturday (Apr 13) said it is believed that the knife attack in Australia's Sydney is not terror-related.

Commissioner Karen Webb confirmed the death of four women and one man at the shopping centre while another woman later succumbed to wounds in the hospital.

Webb said that the suspect was a 40-year-old man, however, the officials are still waiting to conduct a full investigation into the matter before confirming the identity.

She also said that this was not a terrorism incident.

“We know a little bit about this person, but as I said, we're waiting to confirm his identification. It's not a terrorism incident,” Webb said during a news conference.

“Later this evening, we became aware of who we believe the offender is. And we believe that he is a 40-year-old man. However, we are waiting to formally identify him and we cannot speculate yet on his identification. But let me assure you that we are confident that there is no ongoing risk and we are dealing with one person who is now deceased,” she said.

“There were four female women deceased in the shopping centre and one male and subsequently another female passed away in hospital, taking it to a total of six plus the death of the offender,” she added.

The assailant who claimed the lives of six in a knife rampage in Sydney's shopping centre in the beachside suburb of Bondi was shot dead by the police.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in a statement said that the attacker appeared to have "acted alone".

He further said that the speculation on the incident would not be helpful at this stage of the probe.

"It would appear that this person has acted alone. The motives are not known yet and speculation on that would not be helpful at this time," Albanese said.

He then appreciated the “heroism” of ordinary Australians who exhibited bravery in times of danger.

"Today Bondi Junction was the scene of shocking violence. But it was also witness to the humanity and the heroism of our fellow Australians, our brave police, our first responders, and of course, everyday people who could never have imagined that they would face such a moment," the Australian PM said.

An Australian museum is being forced to open the doors of its women-only exhibition on misogyny to men after a disgruntled man complained that it was "discriminatory" to his gender.

Open exhibition to people who do not identify as ladies

The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Tasmania has now been ordered to open up the exhibition to "persons who do not identify as ladies" within 28 days.

This ruling was passed by the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal on Tuesday (Apr 9).

The women's only exhibition

Artist and museum curator Kirsha Kaechele has come up with an experimental artwork exhibition that as per CNN is being billed by the museum as a "tremendously lavish space" where women can indulge in "decadent nibbles, fancy tipples, and other ladylike pleasures — hosted and entertained by the fabulous butler."

Last year, in April, Jason Lau, a New South Wales man visiting the museum, was barred from entering the women only exhibit.

Lau, who paid the $35 AUD or $23 USD museum entry fee, as per the tribunal documents, believed he was subjected to direct gender discrimination.

"He felt strongly enough about this to file a complaint with Equal Opportunities Tasmania," read the notes.

However, the curator Kaechele, during the court proceedings, said that denying men entry to the "mysterious" exhibition was part of the art and its allure. She said that it was to give men a taste of the discrimination and exclusion women have faced throughout history.

She added that she believed women "deserve both equal rights and special privileges in the form of unequal rights," as restitution for historical injustices, "for a minimum of 300 years."

Intentional exclusion

The tribunal acknowledged that it recognises that the art exhibition had "a pointedly participatory component that is intentionally discriminatory, for a good faith artistic purpose that many might not only appreciate but sympathise with or endorse."

However, it said that it was against Australia's 1998 anti-discrimination act.

The act "does not permit discrimination for good faith artistic purpose per se," said the Tribunal.

In her statement to the tribunal, Kaechele said, "We are so deeply embedded in the dominion of man that we do not even see the myriad ways in which we adhere to and multiply his reign."

The Ladies Lounge was needed as "a peaceful space women can retreat to; a haven in which to think clearly, and relish the pure company of women — to escape the invisible story woven through history," she added.

Rejecting the tribunal's requirement of opening exhibition to men, she said, "that's not happening". The museum, too, has reacted to the verdict by posting an explicit response on Instagram.

She added that she believed women "deserve both equal rights and special privileges in the form of unequal rights," as restitution for historical injustices, "for a minimum of 300 years." Intentional exclusion The tribunal acknowledged that it recognises that the art exhibition had "a pointedly participatory component that is intentionally discriminatory, for a good faith artistic purpose that many might not only appreciate but sympathise with or endorse." However, it said that it was against Australia's 1998 anti-discrimination act. Also read | Mythology meets Astronomy: Ancient Egyptians believed Milky Way galaxy was a celestial goddess, claims study The act "does not permit discrimination for good faith artistic purpose per se," said the Tribunal. In her statement to the tribunal, Kaechele said, "We are so deeply embedded in the dominion of man that we do not even see the myriad ways in which we adhere to and multiply his reign." The Ladies Lounge was needed as "a peaceful space women can retreat to; a haven in which to think clearly, and relish the pure company of women — to escape the invisible story woven through history," she added. Rejecting the tribunal's requirement of opening exhibition to men, she said, "that's not happening". The museum, too, has reacted to the verdict by posting an explicit response on Instagram. Experts at Australia's Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa, which is an indigenous organisation that deploys rangers, announced earlier this month that they have spotted and photographed a rare, blind mole. They are known locally as kakarratul.

There isn't much known about these mammals, which are small, blind and hairy. They are rarely seen by humans and are hard to find.

Calling the news "incredible", Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa wrote in a social media post: "#KJMartuRangers have spotted another elusive #Kakarrarturl (#MarsupialMole) in #MartuCountry."

It was the second mole sighting in six months for the Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa Martu rangers.

Consumer confidence in Australia has taken a hit in April, indicating the growing concerns of households grappling with soaring inflation and interest rates at a 12-year high, Bloomberg News reported.

According to a recent survey by Westpac Banking Corp., sentiment declined by 2.4 per cent to 82.4 points, with pessimists significantly outnumbering optimists.

A reading below 100 signifies negative sentiment, and this index has remained below the threshold for over two years.

Bloomberg cited Matthew Hassan, a senior economist at Westpac, who said, “Outside of the deep recession of the early 1990s, this is easily the second most protracted period of deep consumer pessimism since we began surveying in the mid-1970s."

Hassan also pointed out the disparity between consumer price rises and wage growth, noting that consumer prices have outpaced wage growth by 6 percentage points over the past three years.

The ongoing economic challenges are indicative of the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) cautious stance on further interest rate hikes, indicating limited relief for consumers in the foreseeable future.

Although economists anticipate a potential rate cut later this year, the RBA's hesitancy stems from a resilient labour market and an unyielding surge in house prices.

One silver lining for consumers is the upcoming tax cuts scheduled to take effect on July 1.

Westpac's survey indicated the grim assessments of household financial health, particularly the "finances vs a year ago" sub-index, which plummeted to 65.5.

This suggests that tax relief "can't come fast enough for consumers."

Additionally, confidence in the economic outlook waned in April, with the "economy, next 5 years" sub-index dropping by 4.4 per cent to 89.8.

The "economy next 12 months" sub-index also declined by 2.7 per cent to 82.7, marking a 7.1 per cent fall over the past two months.

The RBA had aggressively raised rates by 4.25 percentage points between May 2022 and November last year, marking its most robust tightening cycle in decades in response to an inflation surge triggered by pandemic-era stimulus measures.

Hassan commented on the RBA's evolving stance, saying, “The bank’s latest commentary shows it is becoming a little more comfortable that further rate rises will not be required but it is not yet confident enough about the inflation outlook to consider the case for rate cuts.”

The forthcoming March quarter CPI update on April 24 will be vital in shaping the RBA's future decisions.

The defence chiefs of the four countries, on Saturday (Apr 6) announced that they would conduct a “maritime cooperative activity” to safeguard the rule of law and uphold the right to sail through and fly over the waters and that the exercise would take place within the “Philippine exclusive economic zone.”

Australia: Heavy rains lash Sydney, cause flooding; sparks evacuation warnings

More than 150 people have been rescued from floodwaters in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW), said local officials on Saturday (Apr 6) after heavy rains sparked warnings for residents to move to higher ground. Meanwhile, a man was found dead in flood waters in outer western Sydney.

Around 72 rescues were carried out in the NSW capital Sydney, reported Reuters citing authorities. The Australian city witnessed dangerous flooding in several low-lying suburbs after torrential rains pummelled the country’s southeast region, on Friday (Apr 5).

Sydney received 4.4 inches of rainfall, nearly the amount it witnesses in a month, over the 24 hours to Friday morning, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM). The heavy rains have since prompted warnings for people to avoid non-essential travel and stay indoors.

According to the NSW State Emergency Service, around 15 emergency evacuation orders were in place statewide, and it also fielded more than 4,100 calls for help in the 24 hours to 5:00 am (local time).

Flood waters continue to rise

Notably, while the NSW witnessed clear skies on Saturday, NSW Premier Chris Minns has warned the flood waters were still on the rise.

“The emergency rain situation seems to be easing,” said Minns, adding that it is “important to note that flood levels in some of the rivers particularly in Western Sydney are continuing to rise”.

Australia batter Steve Smith has admitted that it has been challenging for him as a Test opener so far. Smith took the role after David Warner called time in whites for Australia in January earlier this year. Smith, who has nearly 10,000 Test runs, was then promoted up the order to open the batting.

"It's been challenging so far. We've played with some tricky wickets, particularly new-ball wickets that have done quite a bit. It has been challenging. I'd love to sort of turn it around and score some runs up there, that's for sure," Smith told news agency PTI in an interaction.

The Aussie has batted in four matches as an opener and has been able to score just 191 runs in eight innings at an average of 28.50 with a highest score of 91 not out. Smith, however, said that he isn't thinking much about it.

"I'm not reading too much into it. You know, I feel like I've still been batting well," he said while acknowledging that he needs to fix a few technical things.

"A few things I'd like to fix up a little bit technically, but I've had that going throughout my whole career, and it doesn't really matter where I'm at in that respect. We'll wait and see," he added.

Smith also said that the wickets he has opened on have been a bit tricky as well with opposition batters also failing to score runs on them.

"Can't sort of underplay how difficult the wickets have been. A lot of the top orders that we've played against haven't scored a great deal of runs, and it hasn't been until the 30-40 overs-mark that we've seen the wickets get a little bit better and the lower order score some runs,” he added.

Overall, Smith has played 109 matches for Australia with 9,685 runs to his name after starting his career at number nine. He is now considered Australia's one of the best batters ever with an average of 56 in Tests alongside 32 tons and 41 fifties.

Australia batter Steve Smith has admitted that it has been challenging for him as a Test opener so far. Smith took the role after David Warner called time in whites for Australia in January earlier this year.

China and Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic faced a number of issues that strained their bilateral relationship, including the imposition of tariffs on Australian wine by Beijing in 2020. Now, China, after a gap of three long years, announced on Thursday (Mar 28) that it is lifting the imposed tariffs on Australia.

In April 2020, China imposed tariffs exceeding 200 per cent on Australian barley exports, accusing the country of dumping barley into the Chinese market and subsidising its farmers.

The move was seen by Australia as politically motivated in retaliation for Australia's call for an independent investigation into the origins of the COVID-19 virus. The call for investigation drew criticism from China and it accused Australia of being a 'puppet' of the United States.

The Ministry of Commerce in China has now stated that the removal of tariffs would come into effect from Friday (Mar 29).
