In a move to bolster maritime cooperation between Australia and India, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, Chief of the Royal Australian Navy, is scheduled to embark on a significant five-day visit to India starting next Tuesday (April 2). The visit comes amid increasing efforts from both nations to enhance naval ties and strategic collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region.

During his stay, Vice Admiral Hammond is slated to engage in high-level discussions with his Indian counterpart, Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Indian Navy. The discussions are expected to cover a wide array of topics, including maritime security, and joint exercises with the overarching goal of deepening the existing naval partnership between the two countries.

The itinerary for Vice Admiral Hammond's visit encompasses key cities and naval installations across India. He will commence his visit from the capital city Delhi, where he will engage in dialogues aimed at fostering mutual understanding and cooperation. Following this, Vice Admiral Hammond will proceed to Kochi and Mumbai, a hub of maritime activity in India, to explore avenues for collaboration and exchange between the Australian and Indian naval industries.

Cricket Australia (CA) on Thursday (Mar 28) released the central contract list for 2024-25, with 23 players making the cut. There were several surprising omissions as well as additions, especially considering the T20 World Cup is just on the horizon.

Star all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, who was part of Australia's World Cup-winning squad last year, did not find a place in the contract list.

Despite being an integral part of the T20 team, Stoinis' exclusion has surprised many, with pundits attributing it to the string of injuries he has suffered in recent times.

Apart from Stoinis, the likes of Ashton Agar, opener Marcus Harris, pacer Michel Neser and the retiring David Warner have been slipped off the list. Neser would be disappointed mightily as the pacer has been on the fringes for a long time, despite getting little game time.

Young inclusions

Meanwhile, up-and-coming pacer Xavier Bartlett (25), alongside Nathan Ellis (29) has landed a lucrative CA contract. Matt Short (28), and Western Australia allrounder Aaron Hardie (25) are the other two fresh faces, included in the list.

"Matt, Aaron and Xavier have been extremely impressive in the early stages of their international careers. Their performances and the way they have embraced the international stage has been exciting to watch," said national selection chair George Bailey.

"The panel believes they have strong futures and are deserved of their contracts as they work towards striving to become regulars in the Australian setup," he added.

Australia are the defending champions and would be hoping to go for a second consecutive title with the potent squad they have. The World Cup starts immediately after the culmination of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and is being organised in the US and Caribbean this time around.

The team from Down Under will open the campaign against Oman on June 6 before squaring off against arch-rivals England on June 8.

CA contracted men's players 2024-25:

Sean Abbott, Xavier Bartlett, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Lance Morris, Todd Murphy, Jhye Richardson, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa

The heartfelt story of an Australian magpie, Molly from Queensland, has set the Australian social media abuzz. Molly was adopted by an Australian couple from Queensland in 2020 when she fell from a nest. Since then, the wild magpie has been living with the couple and grew an unusual bond with their bull terrier, Peggy.

The duo of Peggy and Molly became an Instagram hit, with more than two million followers watching them play and imitate each other on social media every day.

But soon the paradise of Peggy and Molly caught the attention of state officials, who argued that magpies are wild birds that are not meant to be domesticated at any cost.

The human parents of Molly, Juliette Wells and Reece Mortensen, announced Wednesday that they had “surrendered” their magpie to Queensland’s environment department earlier in the week.

The two seemed emotional in the video and said they had to take this step as some people were constantly complaining about the animal being in their care.

The couple described themselves as “grieving” and “devastated” to lose the magpie, which they surrendered to authorities on March 1.

The incident started a debate over animals choosing to live where they want vs. what animal authorities deem right for them.

Queensland’s Premier Steven Miles also expressed his support for the Peggy and Molly duo and said the magpie should be reunited with the family, contradicting the decision of state officials.

“We did everything in our power to work with the department, including training and also me obtaining my wildlife permit, which, after a period of time, I had to retract my application, as it was a bit of a conflict to our page,” Mortensen said.

The state’s Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI) said they understand the interest of people in Molly, but warned that magpies were not domestic animals and should only ever be housed temporarily for the sole purpose of rehabilitation.

"The magpie is currently under the care of DESI. Unfortunately, it has been highly habituated to human contact and is not capable of being released back into the wild," a spokesperson said.

American space weather forecasters have issued a geomagnetic storm watch for Monday (Mar 25), saying that solar eruptions could interfere with radio transmissions on Earth. However, it is also expected to create spectacular auroras in both hemispheres, including parts of the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

Where and when can you see it?

Aurora borealis will be visible in both the north and the south of the planet due to the recent solar eruptions. These lights could be visible on Monday (Mar 25) night in Scotland; in the US as far as the south and the midwest; and in southern Australia, from Victoria to Western Australia.

These mesmerising ribbons of light are created when energised particles from the Sun slam into the Earth’s atmosphere at speeds of up to 72 million kilometres per hour because the planet’s magnetic field redirects the particles toward the poles.

Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology’s (BOM) space weather forecasting centre issued an alert on Monday morning saying that a severe solar storm was in progress and could lead Southern Lights to be visible.

According to BOM, the auroras will potentially be visible across Tasmania, along Victoria’s coastline and Western Australia’s south-west coast. Although these lights are typically seen near the polls if the solar storms are severe enough they can move further away from the poles.

It advises people to find somewhere dark with an unobstructed view south and sites away from the city are ideal between 10:00 pm and 2:00 am (local time) to see the Southern Lights.

Additionally, satellite operators and power grids may face some difficulties but nothing they cannot handle, said Lash.

During a camping trip in Australia's Lamington National Park, Queensland researcher James Tweed stumbled upon what he thought was bird poop. To his surprise, it turned out to be a unique beetle with a very unique appearance. Tweed told the BBC, "It's very unique. There are not many insects out there that have that trait."

Meet the Punk beetle

Measuring less than a centimeter in length, this newly discovered longhorn beetle has tufts of spiky white hair, earning it the nickname "punk beetle." "A lot of the hairs stand basically straight upright, and so it gives it a bit of a mohawk type look," the entomologist told the BBC

From bird poop to beetle with a mohawk - A case of mistaken identity

Initially, when Tweed first saw this beetle on a leaf in December 2021 he mistook it for bird dropping but its distinct features captured Tweed's attention. "But something in my brain told me to turn around," Tweed recalled. He then took the insect to the CSIRO's Australian National Insect Collection (ANIC).

"I worked with a couple of colleagues from the national insect collection, who literally wrote the book on these groups of beetles... they examined tens of thousands of specimens in museums all over Australia and the world, and they've never found it before," he said.

A unique specimen

The beetle's appearance sets it apart from other insects, the researcher said that he never saw a hairdo like this one. "This is something pretty special, something pretty different," he remarked. Due to its unique appearance, the beetle got a whole new genus/group of its own.

Why so spikey albopilosa?

Experts speculate that the beetle's spiky hairs may be for camouflaging, helping it evade predators during the day by resembling bird poop or a fungal infection. The beetle has been officially named Excastra albopilosa, which means "from the camp" and "white and hairy" in Latin respectively.

During a camping trip in Australia's Lamington National Park, Queensland researcher James Tweed stumbled upon what he thought was bird poop. To his surprise, it turned out to be a unique beetle with a very unique appearance.

Australia's Reserve Bank is anticipated to maintain its interest rates at 4.35 per cent for the third consecutive meeting, according to economists, as the country's economy faces headwinds amidst rising unemployment and sluggish growth.

According to Bloomberg, the decision, expected to be announced on Tuesday, comes as policymakers navigate uncertainties surrounding the strength of a disinflationary.

The bank's meeting, which begins on Monday, will be closely watched for signals about its future monetary policy stance, particularly amid global inflationary pressures and slowing economic indicators.

Analysts predict that the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) will maintain a cautious stance, given recent data suggesting a slowdown in economic activity.

Australia's economy expanded by a modest 0.2 per cent in the final quarter of 2023, with per capita gross domestic product (GDP) experiencing a downturn of 0.3 per cent from the previous quarter, marking the deepest decline since 1991 outside of the pandemic.

Additionally, January's inflation figures came in at 3.4 per cent, below expectations, raising concerns about the sustainability of the moderation in inflation.

Despite concerns about slowing growth, Australia's labour market remains relatively robust, with the unemployment rate at 4.1 per cent, signalling healthy employment levels.

However, there are indications of a slight loosening in the job market, prompting policymakers to monitor the situation closely.

The upcoming release of February's job data will provide further insights into the labour market's resilience and its implications for the economy.

The Reserve Bank's decision is also influenced by the hot property market, where soaring home prices have been fuelled by supply shortages and strong population growth.

Policymakers are cautious about exacerbating the housing market boom, which could have broader implications for financial stability.

Moreover, the anticipation of future rate cuts by the RBA contrasts with expectations of the US Federal Reserve initiating its rate-cut cycle, reflecting diverging economic outlooks between the two countries.

Bloomberg cited Luci Ellis, the chief economist at Westpac Banking Corp., who suggests that there is optimism regarding the economic outlook. He noted that inflationary pressures are moderating, which could alleviate pressure on households.

Ellis anticipates a shift in policy stance later in the year, with the commencement of income tax cuts and the beginning of an RBA easing cycle expected from September. This less restrictive policy environment is anticipated to support economic recovery efforts.

As the RBA navigates the complex economic landscape, the upcoming release of the semi-annual financial stability report on Friday will provide insights into the impact of rising borrowing costs on Australian banks.

Despite the tightening monetary policy cycle, Australian banks have fared relatively well.

Uber, has reached a landmark settlement agreement to pay A$271.8 million (US$178 million) to resolve a class-action lawsuit brought by Australian taxi operators and drivers on Monday.

According to Reuters, this settlement, described as the fifth-largest in Australia's legal history, marks the culmination of a protracted legal battle initiated in 2019.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of more than 8,000 taxi and hire car owners and drivers, alleges that Uber's entry into the Australian market resulted in significant financial losses for traditional taxi operators, violating regulatory requirements.

AFP News cited Lead lawyer Michael Donelly from Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, who hailed the settlement as a huge victory for the affected drivers and operators.

"Uber fought tooth and nail at every point along the way, every day, for the five years this has been on foot... but on the courtroom steps... Uber has blinked," AFP News quoted him as saying.

Donelly further highlighted that the settlement provides a measure of redress for the losses incurred by the plaintiffs, who had been denied compensation for years.

According to the lawsuit, Uber's arrival in the Australian market in 2012 disrupted the taxi industry, leading to a decline in revenue for licensed taxi drivers and a depreciation in the value of taxi licenses.

The plaintiffs argued that Uber operated in violation of laws requiring taxis and hire cars to be licensed, giving the company an unfair advantage in the market.

Uber had maintained that it had not knowingly violated any laws.

According to Reuters, former lawmaker and taxi driver Rod Barton, a member of the class action, asserted that Uber had deliberately circumvented Australia's taxi licensing regulations to gain a competitive edge in the market.

"They knew full well they were required to have their drivers and their vehicles fully licenced. They chose not to do that, and they did a lot of things that gave them a commercial advantage against the taxi industry, which established their foothold," he said.

The settlement, he believes, vindicates the claims made by the plaintiffs and underscores the need for accountability in the transportation sector.

The storm, as per Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), is set to cross the Northern Territory town of Borroloola. On Sunday (Mar 17) afternoon, emergency services advised residents who would not be able to shelter safely to move elsewhere.

“Borroloola as of this morning has a heightened risk that was intensified with the intensification of Tropical Cyclone Megan,” said NT Police Superintendent Sonia Kennon, as quoted by ABC News.

The official has also urged the residents to shelter in a safe place and stay inside until the authorities have given an all-clear.

There is also a 20 per cent chance that Megan could develop into a category four storm when it makes landfall, said BOM.

“It does have enough time that it can strengthen,” said the agency’s Shenagh Gamble, as quoted by the Australian Associated Press, adding that their current forecast indicates that it will not.

About the storm

The severe Tropical Cyclone Megan formed over the Gulf of Carpentaria, near the island of Groote Eylandt, on Saturday (Mar 16) afternoon and moved south towards the NT and Queensland border.

As of Sunday morning, it was a category-two storm but intensified as the day progressed. Megan is expected to make landfall as a category three storm late Monday (Mar 18) or early Tuesday near the border between Queensland and NT.

“It’s quite a large tropical cyclone, taking up around one third of the Gulf of Carpentaria area,” said Gamble. According to BOM, the cyclone would have a “very destructive core” when it makes landfall on Monday.

The bureau has also particularly warned residents near the coastal regions between Nathan River and the border as there is a “very dangerous storm tide associated with this system” and they are expected to be “significantly higher than the normal high tides,” said Gamble.

Situation in Groote Eylandt

A cyclone alert was in place from Groote Eylandt to Mornington Island and included the far inland town of Borroloola. The authorities have also expressed concern, particularly for remote indigenous communities on Groote Eylandt.

The small island has received more than 400 millimetres of rainfall in the past 24 hours. Alia Stevenson, a long-time resident of Groote Eylandt told ABC News, that many trees were down across the island, the wharf had been damaged, and water bubbles had formed under the roads.

The rains have also led to the closure of highways, and supermarkets, and residents could not travel between communities, said Stevenson.

The record of growing the world's largest blueberry was broken by a farm in Australia after it produced the fruit, as big as a ping-pong ball.

The fruit, which was picked in November and has been stored in the freezer since then, is 4cm wide and weighs around 20.4g, which is 10 times the weight of an average blueberry.

Earlier, the title of the biggest blueberry was held by a 16.2g berry which was grown in Western Australia. This specimen was of a new variety and was developed to meet the demands of consumers for larger berries by the Costa Group.

Lead horticulturalist Brad Hocking said that the Eterna breed continuously produces huge fruit, however, recent growing conditions had led to the growth of a bumper crop at their farm located in Corindi in northern New South Wales.

Hocking's team had seen some good berries hanging from the tree, however, they were left shocked and "stoked" when the fruits were weighed.

"It wasn't really until we put them on the scale that we realised what we found," said Hocking, while speaking to the BBC.

Australia men's head coach Andrew McDonald has backed Mitchell Marsh to lead the team in the upcoming T20 World Cup in June later this year. Marsh has been filling in as the T20 skipper ever since Aaron Finch retired in 2022. With Marsh being a three-format player, veteran wicketkeeper Matthew Wade has chipped in as well at times but Marsh remains the first-choice.

"I think all roads will lead to Mitch, so just got to get that ticked off in certain areas," said McDonald after Australia's Test series win against New Zealand on Monday (Mar 11).

Notably, McDonald, along with selector chair George Bailey and Tony Dodemaide – forms the panel which will advise Cricket Australia about their preferred choice.

"We're happy and comfortable with the way he's been able to operate with that T20 team. We think he's the leader for the World Cup, and I think that will just be a matter of due course," he said.

Marsh recently led Australia to victory against New Zealand in the T20I series played before the recently-concluded two-Test series.

Ponting on Smith's place in Playing XI

Former Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting believes that Steve Smith won't be 'in the playing XI' for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Ponting, however, acknowledged that having Smith in the squad will have a 'calming influence' on the team.

"You love having guys like him around because of the experience and the calming influence that you can have around a team during a World Cup," said Ponting about Smith on ICC Review podcast.

"But the other thing you always have to be mindful of is what role can he play? So I would think if Steve Smith does find his way into the squad, I don't think he will be in the starting XI."

Smith himself has conceded that he isn't sure of a place in Australia's T20 World Cup squad. The batter, who has become the opener for his team across formats after David Warner's retirement, made the comments before the recently concluded Test series against New Zealand.

Commonwealth Games chiefs praised Malaysia’s “fantastic track record” after the country said it had been offered £100 million ($130 million) to host the 2026 edition.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is scrambling to find a host after the Australian state of Victoria abruptly pulled out in July last year citing the cost.

Victoria’s sudden move and the lack of an obvious alternative triggered debate about the future of the Games, which take place every four years and were last held in Birmingham in 2022.

On Monday, the Olympic Council of Malaysia said that the London-based CGF had “offered Malaysia the opportunity to replace Victoria as hosts of the Commonwealth Games in 2026.

“The offer includes significant financial investment of £100 million to support the local delivery and legacy planning of the 2026 edition.”

Malaysia held the Games in 1998.

Mohamad Norza Zakaria, president of the Commonwealth Games Association of Malaysia, called it a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity... which will build on the success of Kuala Lumpur 1998 and put Malaysia back onto the world sporting map”.

A CGF spokesperson suggested that Malaysia was not the only country that could potentially stage the Games in 2026, saying the organisation was “in advanced, confidential discussions with potential hosts”.

But the spokesperson added: “Malaysia has a fantastic track record of delivering sporting events, and the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur were hugely successful.

“We are encouraged by their early concepts of building on this legacy through use of many of the same world-class facilities.”

The spokesperson said that the £100 million of “financial and strategic support” was on offer for any potential host as part of the Victoria withdrawal settlement.

In a shocking development, a woman, originally hailing from India's Hyderabad, was found dead in Australia's Victoria state.

The body of the deceased, identified as Chaithanya 'Swetha' Madhagani, was found in a wheelie bin on Mount Pollock Road in Buckley, near the town of Winchelsea on Saturday (March 9), according to The Herald Sun.

As per the local media reports, the authorities point towards a potential link to Swetha's husband Ashok Raj's involvement in the incident who abruptly flew to India with their three-year-old son shortly before the victim's body was found.

The local residents in Buckley immediately informed the police after spotting the bin that was dumped alongside the dirt road.

A probe has been launched into the incident. The investigators believe that Shwetha was first murdered at her home where she lived with her husband and son and her dead body was later disposed off in the bin.

A police spokesperson released a statement saying that the authorities believed Shwetha knew who her killer was, however, they were still working to ascertain the circumstances that led to her death, according to The Age.

"At this stage in the investigation, it is believed the parties involved are known to one another and the offender may have fled overseas," the spokesperson said.

"There is no immediate threat to the community and no arrests have been made."

Australia's iconic Great Barrier Reef faces yet another mass bleaching episode. Officials confirm widespread damage in the UNESCO World Heritage Site as urgent climate action is emphasised

The Great Barrier Reef, a globally renowned natural wonder, is grappling with another significant mass bleaching event, marking the fifth occurrence in the past eight years, according to official reports.

This phenomenon, triggered by heat-stressed corals expelling vital algae, underscores the escalating threat to the UNESCO World Heritage site. Scientists emphasise the pressing need for immediate climate action to ensure the survival of the reef, highlighting the alarming increase in the frequency and scale of these bleaching events.

Greenpeace Australia's David Ritter expressed concern, stating, "The frequency and scale at which these mass bleaching events are now occurring is frightening - every summer we're holding our breath."

He criticised Australia's commitment to the reef's health, pointing out contradictions in supporting the coal and gas industry amid ongoing environmental challenges.

"The Reef is literally cooking," added the Climate Council's Simon Bradshaw. The current episode follows only two recorded mass bleaching events until 2016, signaling a growing ecological crisis that demands urgent attention.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is conducting in-water examinations to assess the severity and extent of the damage across the 2,300km stretch off Australia's north east coast. Aerial surveys covering 320 reefs revealed prevalent bleaching, with the southern zone experiencing the worst in nearly two decades. However, Chief Scientist Roger Beeden suggested that recovery is possible if conditions improve.

Over the past decade, the reef has demonstrated resilience, recovering from various challenges, including mass bleaching events, cyclones, and outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish. The recent global rise in sea temperatures has also led to bleaching events in other regions, including the southern-most reef at Lord Howe Island in Australian waters.

Despite its UNESCO heritage status for over 40 years, the Great Barrier Reef is deemed under "serious threat" from warming seas and pollution. The Australian government faces scrutiny as it seeks to prevent the declaration of the reef as "in danger," with the decision up for review in July.

Mass coral bleaching strikes Australia's Great Barrier Reef again

A 22-year-old Australian man was on Thursday (Mar 7) charged with the murder of Samantha Murphy, who was last seen leaving her home over a month ago. The police in the Australian state of Victoria said that the woman from the city of Ballarat was allegedly killed in a “deliberate attack”.

Charges against 22-year-old

On Thursday afternoon, the 22-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at a magistrate court in the Australian city where the judge heard about the issues around the case due to his young age. He was later charged with one count of murder.

According to the media reports, the accused is the son of a former Australian Football League (AFL) player. The 22-year-old was arrested on Wednesday (Mar 6) from his home in Ballarat.

During the brief hearing, the Scotsburn man was present in the court following his arrest on Wednesday morning, wearing an orange hi-vis shirt. His lawyer claimed that his client was at risk of self-harm.

About the case

Murphy, 51, was last seen when she left her house to go on a run on February 4 at around 7:00 am (local time). However, when she failed to show up for a brunch until afternoon the police launched a massive search operation.

The Victoria police chief commissioner, Shane Patton, said that they will allege that Murphy’s murder was a “deliberate act” and occurred on the day she disappeared near Mount Clear.

“I’m not going to go into the details, motive or any of those further details in regards to what has or hasn’t happened when she has (allegedly) been killed. I will simply say he has been charged with murder, which by its definition means it was an intentional act,” Patton told reporters.

He also said that the accused had not yet disclosed the location of the victim’s body and called on the public to come forward with any information which may help police locate it.

Magistrate Michelle Mykytowycz remanded the accused in custody, who will reappear for a hearing on August 8.

A 45-year-old Australian man has been charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly tied three Aboriginal children with cable ties to restrain them, on Tuesday (Mar 5). The incident has been widely criticised with top Australian officials saying that they are appalled by the footage.

What we know about the incident

The police were called to a house in Western Australia’s town of Broome around 2:15 pm (local time), on Tuesday about an alleged trespassing incident where they found two children tied up with cable ties.

The 45-year-old had reportedly restrained three children – two boys aged seven and eight and a six-year-old girl – after he found them swimming on a vacant property. The third child, an eight-year-old boy according to the police, had been detained but fled before the officers arrived.

The video of the incident shows two children sitting next to each other near the man’s garage, as he argues with a crowd gathered around his house urging him to untie the children.

In the widely shared video the boy and the girl, who appear to be Indigenous, can be heard crying in the footage which was live-streamed on Facebook. However, till the police arrived the children remained restrained. The police arrested the 45-year-old White man.

One of the women who was filming later told the local media that the children had been crying for their mother. “They were frightened. They were crying, shaking and singing out for their mum,” local resident Leandra McKenzie told 9News Australia.

The paramedics who arrived at the scene assessed the two children and they were reunited with their family shortly after the police arrived, said the local officials.

Charges against the 45-year-old

On Wednesday (Mar 6), WA police acting assistant commissioner Rod Wilde said that the man had called the police saying that he had restrained three children.

However, Wilde noted that while there are provisions that allow people to make a citizen’s arrest where someone can be restrained, there are conditions around it.

“Whatever force you apply to arrest someone needs to be reasonable, given the age of the person involved, the vulnerability, and all of those things that be taken into account by the court,” said the WA police official.

However, in this case, the charges against the 45-year-old stem from his “disproportionate” actions in this scenario.

“Children under 10 are not going to be criminally responsible,” said Wilde. The man has been granted bail and he is due to appear before the court on March 25.

Australian lawmakers react

State MP for the region of Kimberley, Divina D’Anna, who is a Yawuru, Nimanburr and Bardi woman, called for calm in the community in the wake of the incident.

D’Anna told Guardian Australia that the video was “disturbing and confronting” but refused to make any further comments pending police investigation.

Meanwhile, WA children’s commissioner, Jacqueline McGowan-Jones said that she was disturbed by the footage.

“It would appear these are very young and small children. They appear to be quite frightened in the circumstances. He is quite a large man. And they appear to be very nervous,” McGowan-Jones told ABC.

Chinese automakers, led by BYD, are making significant strides in the Australian electric vehicle (EV) market, capitalising on favourable conditions including government incentives and a growing demand for environmentally friendly transportation.

The Australian government, under Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, has actively promoted EV adoption as part of its emissions reduction efforts, resulting in a surge in EV sales.

According to data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, EVs accounted for 7.2 per cent of new car sales in Australia in 2023, up from 3.1 per cent the previous year.

David Smitherman, chief executive at BYD's distributor in Australia, highlighted the growing opportunity in the EV market, stating, "We need to now get into the mainstream market because we've sold to the early adopters and the passionate EV purchasers."

BYD plans to expand its product lineup in Australia by introducing two SUVs and a pickup truck, aiming to further penetrate the market.

Additionally, the company is focusing on fleet sales to companies like Uber and plans to open more dealerships to accommodate increasing demand.

Chinese state-owned SAIC Motor is also set to expand its presence in Australia with the launch of three new models under its MG brand, including plug-in hybrids and electric roadsters.

This move reflects the broader trend of Chinese automakers investing in the Australian market, drawn by its absence of protectionist trade barriers and the government's support for EV adoption.

Despite tensions in other markets regarding Chinese EV makers' access to state subsidies and cybersecurity concerns, the Australian government has not expressed similar apprehensions.

In response to the growing competition, incumbent automakers like Ford and Toyota are also ramping up their efforts in the EV space.

Ford has plans to introduce more electrified vehicles to the Australian market, while Toyota recently launched its first electric car alongside its existing hybrid lineup.

However, the emergence of Chinese EV manufacturers poses a significant challenge to traditional automakers, particularly those heavily reliant on gasoline-engine vehicles.

The Australian government has implemented various measures to incentivise EV adoption, including tax exemptions for EV purchases and generous rebates on state levels.

These incentives have encouraged consumers like Mark Adamson and Peter Alley to switch to electric vehicles.

Adamson, who received significant discounts on his BYD Atto 3 SUV through government rebates and manufacturer discounts, expressed his motivation: "I figured why not give it a go? It's sort of really worth doing."

Alley, on the other hand, highlighted the cost-saving benefits of EV ownership, particularly in the face of rising gasoline prices.

BYD begins construction on EV manufacturing plant in Brazil

Meanwhile, BYD confirmed on Wednesday that it is going to begin construction of a manufacturing facility in Brazil.

This complex is slated to become operational either by the end of 2024 or in early 2025.

With an initial estimated annual production capacity of 150,000 units, the facility will focus on manufacturing models such as the Dolphin hatchback, Dolphin Mini, Song Plus SUV, and Yuan Plus crossover during its first phase.

Chinese automakers pave the way to Australia's EV market

Australia's economy faced sluggish growth in the December quarter, as household incomes dwindled and consumer spending stagnated, signaling a potential downward shift in interest rates.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers acknowledged the economic challenges, stating that the focus is now shifting from inflation to growth.

According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), real gross domestic product (GDP) expanded by a mere 0.2 per cent in the fourth quarter, falling below expectations of 0.3 per cent.

This slowdown reflects the effectiveness of high borrowing costs in curbing demand, with annual growth dropping to 1.5 per cent, the lowest since early 2021.

The softness in domestic demand was evident in household spending patterns, as essentials saw a modest increase while discretionary spending declined.

Deloitte Access Economics partner Stephen Smith highlighted the impact of higher interest rates and living costs on Australian consumers, stressing the need for policy adjustments to stimulate economic growth.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has implemented significant interest rate hikes to combat inflation, totaling 425 basis points since May 2022.

Despite headline inflation easing to two-year lows, persistent services price pressures have kept the possibility of further rate hikes on the table.

Treasurer Chalmers noted the need for a response to the shifting economic landscape, with a potential budget announcement in May.

Globally, economic growth has slowed, with countries like Japan, Britain, and the euro zone facing recessionary pressures.

In Australia, growth has been supported by record immigration, yet per capita GDP fell by 0.3 per cent in the December quarter, marking the longest declining streak since 1982.

While the household saving ratio rebounded slightly, it remained subdued, indicating ongoing economic challenges.

Net trade emerged as a significant driver of growth, with reduced imports contributing positively to fourth-quarter GDP growth.

Looking ahead, analysts anticipate further economic slowdown before a potential recovery in the second half of the year.

Market expectations point to the possibility of the RBA implementing its first rate cut in August, signaling a shift towards growth-focused policies.
