Australia opener David Warner joined an elite list of cricketers with 3000-plus runs in T20Is in the final game of the three-match series against West Indies on Tuesday (Feb 13) in Perth. It was also Warner's last T20I at home with Australia's next T20Is scheduled in New Zealand before the T20I World Cup in June later this year in West Indies and the USA. The batter has already announced his retirement after the T20 World Cup.

Warner scored 81 off 49 in a losing cause as Australia failed to chase 221 but won the series 2-1. During the innings, Warner also became only the seventh batter to reach the 3000-plus T20I runs milestone. Before Warner, Virat Kohli (4,037), Rohit Sharma (3,974), Babar Azam (3,698), Martin Guptill (3,531), Paul Stirling (3,438) and Aaron Finch (3,120) had achieved the same feat.

The New South Wales Productivity Commission report, on Tuesday (Feb 13) warned that one of Australia’s most prominent cities, Sydney is on track to be “the city with no grandchildren” as its soaring house prices are driving young families out.

What did the commission say?

A study conducted by the commission found that Sydney lost double the number of people aged from 30 to 40 as it gained between 2016 and 2021, the reason for his exodus? Unaffordable housing costs.

The report titled 'What We Gain By Building More Homes In The Right Places' was released on Tuesday along with a video in which NSW productivity commissioner, Peter Achterstraat explained the dire situation that Sydney faces.

“Many young families are leaving Sydney because they can’t afford to buy a home. Or they can only afford one in the outer suburbs with a long commute,” said the NSW productivity commissioner.

“If we don’t act, we could become known as the city with no grandchildren,” Achterstraat warned. The report also highlighted the need for greater housing density across the city.

According to the commissioner, the officials must build inner Sydney suburbs and not just add houses on the city’s outskirts. He also said that Sydney needs “hundreds of thousands of new homes over the next two decades” to address the issue.

This, Achterstraat said, would not only help productivity and wages but also cut consumers’ carbon emissions due to shorter commutes and preserve land and green spaces.

“High housing costs work like a regressive tax, with the burden falling disproportionately on low-income earners,” said the productivity commissioner.

Problem to worsen?

Australia is also known for being one of the least affordable countries in the world for housing which, as per Bloomberg, has been attributed to strong population growth, limited construction, and an inclination towards smaller households.

Additionally, since there is reportedly a rebound in immigration with more than one million net arrivals in Australia over the next five years, the situation will likely worsen as these people would need a place to live.

However, the problem seems to have been exacerbated in Sydney due to a strong opposition to high apartment blocks among locals.

According to the report, Sydney would have generated 45,000 additional houses without the need for any extra land if the buildings constructed between 2017 and 2022 had been an average of 10 storeys high instead of seven.

“Areas dominated by large, low-density, freestanding homes do not cater well for younger people moving out of home, or for older people looking to downsize while staying in their neighbourhood,” said the report.

Protecting the past or building for future?

The New South Wales Productivity Commission report, on Tuesday (Feb 13) warned that one of Australia’s most prominent cities, Sydney is on track to be “the city with no grandchildren” as its soaring house prices are driving young families out.

Also Read | Spanish artist Alicia Framis all set to marry AI-created hologram; first such hybrid couple in human history According to the commissioner, the officials must build inner Sydney suburbs and not just add houses on the city’s outskirts. Protecting the past or building for future? The NSW productivity commissioner also called for a fresh discussion on heritage restrictions on housing close to the central business district and its role in keeping the prices high. He noted that the proliferation of Heritage Conservation Areas limits new housing and affects more than half of residential land in prime suburbs. New homes “in inner suburbs will let young families live near their parents and their children’s grandparents,” said Achterstraat, as quoted by the Guardian, adding that we can “preserve the gems of Sydney’s heritage without inadvertently freezing young people out.” (With inputs from agencies)

'Right to ignore': Australia to allow workers to shun calls, texts from bosses after work hours

Australia has introduced a new legislation. Dubbed the 'right to disconnect,' these laws aim to redefine the work-life balance for millions of workers across the country. Under these laws, workers would gain the right to ignore unreasonable calls and messages from their bosses outside of work hours without facing penalties.

A 29-year-old woman who was mauled by a shark in Australia’s Sydney Harbour in the first attack in the past 15 years or so, on Tuesday (Jan 30) is said to be in stable condition after sustaining a “serious” leg injury.

About the attack

The emergency services responded to an incident that occurred at around 7:45 pm (local time), on Monday (Jan 29) at a private wharf in Elizabeth Bay and found a woman believed to be in her 20s, with “a serious injury” to her right leg, said the police in New South Wales, in a statement.

The Australian media later identified the woman as 29-year-old, Lauren O’Neill. According to the police, the woman was swimming off the wharf when the shark attacked her. She reportedly suffered significant injuries to her leg and blood loss after being attacked by a bull shark.

Media reports citing residents and the police said that the incident took place about 20 metres off from the jetty and less than two kilometres from Sydney Opera House. Notably, while shark sightings along the prominent Australian city’s ocean-facing beaches are common, it was the first attack in Sydney Harbour since February 2009.

According to 9News, a nearby veterinarian applied a tourniquet to stem the bleeding and O’Neill was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital in a critical condition.

The 29-year-old, as per a hospital spokesperson, is in stable condition in intensive care and is expected to undergo surgery during the day.

Neighbours recall ‘horrifying’ attack

O’Neill’s neighbours rushed to help her after the shark attack, while a veterinarian living nearby gave first aid.

“I got home from work and sat down on the couch. I heard a soft yell for help just outside the window,” nearby resident Michael Porter told reporters, as quoted by AFP. He saw a woman outside trying to climb a ladder out of the harbour’s waters.

“Behind her was her leg, which was limp and all completely open and full of dark red blood behind her,” Porter added. “The whole thing was totally surreal and I still haven’t processed it all, to be honest.”

“We have always worried and known about sharks in the harbour,” he said. “It’s only now that it feels very real.” Porter also went on to call the vet named Fiona who applied tourniquets a “hero,” adding “I believe she saved her life.”

Amy Smoothey, senior shark scientist at the New South Wales department of primary industries, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that based on the bite patterns and images provided, the woman was likely attacked by a bull shark.

Sharks are “more actively feeding” in low light at dawn and dusk, Smoothey said, making it “potentially a high-risk time to be swimming”. She also said that scientists have tagged 87 large bull sharks in Sydney Harbour since 2009.

West Indies bowler Shamar Joseph bowled his team to a thrilling victory for their first Test win in Australia since 1997. Shamar, who was injured by Mitchell Starc's lethal yorker on day 3 (Jan 27), took six wickets in the opening session and finished with 7/68 as West Indies drew two-match series 1-1. Chasing 216, Australia were bowled out 207 as West Indies won by eight runs.

Joseph didn't bowl initially on day 4 (Jan 28) but once he did, he bowled a 10-over spell, sending Australia's chase in a spiral. He started with the wicket of Cameron Green before sending back Travis Head on the very next ball. Australia, who were cruising along at 113/2, suddenly were 113/4. Joseph didn't stop there as he sent back dangerous Mitchell Marsh for his next wicket.

Mitchell Starc then played some shots in his 21-run innings and added 35 runs for the seventh wicket with Steve Smith. Australia: Four Indians, including three women, die by drowning in Phillip Island

Australia, on Tuesday (Jan 23) sanctioned a Russian man named Aleksandr Ermakov for his role in the country’s worst data breach, which impacted nearly 10 million customers of the insurer Medibank. Canberra announced first-of-its-kind sanctions which include a travel ban and financial penalties.

About the sanctions

In late 2022, Medibank, Australia’s largest private health insurer, disclosed that a hacker had stolen the personal information of 9.7 million current and former customers, and released the data on the dark web.

The files published online included sensitive information about millions of Australians, including abortion records and treatment received for mental health or addiction.

Australia has recently witnessed a spike in the number of cyber attacks, prompting the government to overhaul its cyber security rules last year and set up an agency to help coordinate responses.

This is the first time that Australia has imposed its cyber sanctions following a framework which was legislated in 2021.

The sanctions against Ermakov, 33, also include financial sanctions and a travel ban, said Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil during a press briefing, describing the Medibank hack as “the single most devastating cyber-attack we have experienced as a nation”.

“Literally millions of people having personal data about themselves, their family members, taken from them and cruelly placed online for others to see,” said O’Neil.

She added, “These people are cowards and they’re scumbags. They hide behind technology and today, the Australian government is saying that when we put our minds to it, we’ll unveil who you are, and we’ll make sure you are accountable.”
