A man filmed what he thought were his last moments after a shark attacked him at the 1770 Beach in Queensland, Australia. However, Matteo Mariotti survived and uploaded the video of the bloody shark attack on his Instagram handle. "I started this video a few moments after the last bite. I wanted to say goodbye. I never thought I'd survive that monster," the 20-year-old from Italy wrote on Instagram on Monday (Dec 11), four days after the attack. The creature attacked Mariotti as he was snorkelling off the coast. When he realised that the shark had severely injured him, tearing his clothes, he pulled out his GoPro camera and started recording himself. The video shows that the water around him was bloody as he was swimming towards the shore. As he neared the beach, he said, "I beg you to help me. Pull me out of the water," to a friend at the shore. He lost half of his right leg and suffered bites to his left during the shark attack. He thought the shark would attack him again, he told Italian newspaper Gazzetta Di Parma. "It probably prevented him from attacking me again," he said, adding that he was "really afraid" the creature would do so. Martin Kelly, a senior operations supervisor with the Queensland Ambulance Service, told NBC News on Wednesday that it was "one of the most serious injuries" he had ever seen. "When you get this type of injury that severe, often people do pass away," he said. Metro North Hospital and Health Service in Brisbane, where Mariotti is receiving treatment, confirmed that he was in stable condition in a statement on Tuesday. However, they did not give details out of privacy and confidentiality. Furthermore, a GoFundMe webpage has raised over $50,000 for his medical care. According to the Florida Museum, which keeps track of all known shark attacks worldwide, there were 57 unprovoked shark attacks in 2022, out of which five were fatal. The database also said that Australia was second to the United States in the number of shark attacks. According to Kelly, sharks feed in the morning or afternoon as the water temperature is lower. "There are places you just need to be careful [as] you're in their environment, and you need to respect this fact," he added. (With inputs from agencies)

India has the world’s biggest diaspora, with most people living abroad out of any country in the world, as of 2020, according to the United Nations World Migration Report 2022. The Indian foreign ministry said a record number of Indians surrendered their passports last year, with most settling in the United States, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. But this might change soon.&nbsp;

Recently, Australia, Canada, and the UK have introduced visa restrictions which might impact tens of thousands of Indian students and workers who leave the country every year in search of better education and employment opportunities.&nbsp;

According to the Indian government data, the largest number of Indians who gave up Indian citizenship in 2021 settled in the United States (78,284), Australia (23,533), Canada (21,597), and the UK (14,637).

<h2>Australia</h2>

On Monday (Dec 11), the Australian government in a bid to “fix the broken immigration system,” said that it is restricting the intake of international students and low-skilled workers by tightening the visa rules. It will also tighten the English language test.&nbsp;The decision comes after net immigration was expected to have peaked at a record 510,000 in 2022-23, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

Ahead of the formal release of the government’s strategy, Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said the move is expected to halve Australia's&nbsp;migrant intake over the next two years. “We’ve worked around the clock to strike the best balance in Australia’s migration system,” said the Australian minister.

In line with the new rules, Canberra will require international students to achieve higher scores on English proficiency tests. The students applying for a graduate visa will require a score of 6.5 points, up from 6.0, while student visa applicants will need a 6.0, up from 5.5.

However, Australia’s High Commissioner to India, Philip Green, according to the Mint said, “Commitments agreed between India and Australia under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA) will be upheld under the new migration Strategy.”

Indian graduates will be eligible to stay on a Temporary Graduate Visa for two years for a Bachelor’s degree, three years for the completion of a Masters’ degree, and four years for finishing a PhD.&nbsp;

The Australian government said it would set up a new specialist visa for highly skilled workers which would cut the processing time to one week, in a bid to help businesses recruit top migrants amid tough competition with other developed economies.

Australia, which has become one of the tightest labour markets in the world, has been long reliant on immigration.&nbsp;

The government believes the new pathway, which will be open to eligible applicants earning at least $135,000 in any occupation aside from trade workers, machinery operators and drivers, and labourers, will add $3.4 billion to the country’s budget over the next decade.

<h2>Canada</h2>

Earlier this month, the Canadian government’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that starting January 1, 2024, the cost-of-living financial requirement for study permit applicants will be raised to more than double.&nbsp;

International students will need to show they have access to US$15,219 (CAN$20,635) instead of the previous US$7,376 (CAN$10,000) which had been in place for around 20 years, in addition to paying for travel and tuition.

The hike also comes as many international students are unable to keep up with the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/canada-sets-immigration-targets-for-2024-2026-with-view-to-contain-housing-woes-654371">rise in the cost of living</a>&nbsp;in Canada that has spiked over the past couple of years.

In addition to this announcement, IRCC Minister Marc Miller, on Thursday (Dec 7) also said that the measure which offers extended off-campus work hours will be extended till the end of April.&nbsp;

The government had previously sought to limit the number of hours that international students can work while studying in Canada.&nbsp;

“The waiver on the 20-hour-per-week limit on the number of hours international students are allowed to work off campus while class is in session will be extended to April 30, 2024,” said Miller.&nbsp;

The IRCC might set the limit to 30 hours per week moving forward, said Miller, while also ruling out the possibility of full-time work for international students while they are studying.&nbsp;

International education contributes more than $22 billion in economic activity every year and supports more than 200,000 jobs in Canada, according to the government.&nbsp;

Indian students already are set to deal with long delays for visa applications. This comes after Ottawa removed its 41 diplomats from New Delhi amid an ongoing diplomatic row.

Tensions rose following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s unfounded accusations of India’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.&nbsp;

<h2>United Kingdom</h2>

The British government earlier this month announced tough new immigration rules as the country continues to grapple with high number of people moving to the UK legally and illegally.

The new package of measures has sought to reduce immigration each year by hundreds of thousands.

Home Secretary James Cleverly said he was taking “robust action” to lower authorised immigration which hit a record high in 2022.

“This package of measures will take place from next spring,” said Cleverly on December 4.&nbsp;

The UK government plans to raise the minimum salary required for foreign workers to be eligible for a work visa by a third and make it more difficult for them to bring their families.&nbsp;

The minimum salary threshold for foreign skilled workers will be raised to $48,800 from $33,000. Meanwhile, British citizens who want to bring their foreign spouse to the UK will now have to earn the same amount, which is double the current threshold.

While health and social care, which are highly reliant on immigrant staff, are exempt from the salary rule, care workers from overseas will no longer be able to bring dependent relatives with them. The restriction has raised concerns in the industry that fewer will want to come to the UK.&nbsp;

“Migrant workers were encouraged to come here because both sectors are critically short of staff. Hospitals and care homes simply couldn’t function without them,” said Christina McAnea, general secretary of the Unison trade union.&nbsp;

She also called the measures a “total disaster” for health and the care sector. “Migrants will now head to more welcoming countries, rather than be forced to live without their families,” said McAnea.&nbsp;

Similarly, starting in January, most foreign graduate students will no longer be able to bring family members to the UK. The measures have irked Indian students and business associations, who contribute significantly to the British economy.&nbsp;

A report by London Economics, citing data from 2020-21, said international students put nearly 10 times more into the British economy than they take, with Indians representing the second largest cohort of international students coming to study in the UK.&nbsp;

The measures were announced amid mounting pressure on UK PM Rishi Sunak to act amid record net migration last year. The issue has dominated Britain’s political landscape for more than a decade and the incumbent PM has promised to crack down on irregular migration after tens of thousands of people arrived on small boats across the English Channel.

Australia's migration review, while imposing no caps on foreign students, has introduced new measures. Stricter English language requirements, restrictions on onshore visa hopping to maintain system integrity, and increased scrutiny of high-risk student visa applications form the crux of the strategy. Canberra's focus under the migration review is to attract skilled workers which aligns with the needs of its economy under a consensus reached by the government, trade unions, and businesses.

The Australian High Commissioner Philip Green has emphasised his country's strong ties with India which are at the "highest point" and this has been a "landmark year" for both countries. The Indian PM Modi had traveled to Australia this year, while Australian PM Albanese visited India two times, one on a bilateral visit and another to attend the G20 summit.

Speaking to WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, he pointed to cooperation in the Indian Ocean, saying," we undertake that closer engagement in the Indian Ocean, India will be our most vital partner".

Both sides are working on several areas from education to defence.

On Education ties and visas for Indian students, he highlighted, "processing times for Indian students seeking a visit to Australia are now very short. We had a period up to COVID where there was an explosion where we weren't able to cope with that and press sometimes for longer. Now they are shorter". On Defence, he pointed out that both sides are, "just normalising closer cooperation with defence and security agencies here in India and back in Canberra and that continues to go from strength to strength".

He also spoke on other issues like Australia is dealing with the Khalistani extremists, Quad, India in the Pacific, &amp; more.&nbsp;

WION: It has been a landmark year between Australia and India. What were the key outcomes of the 2+2 Defence and Foreign Ministers meeting that took place in Delhi 2 weeks ago?

Philip Green: Well, it's great to be with you Siddhant especially just so soon after what was very successful 2+2. I think the key framing for the two plus two, as you said, is that it's been a landmark year between Australia and India. We are closer than we have ever been, and in the strategic field, there's a very high level of alignment. And that was evident in the conversations I've been in a lot of these ministerial dialogues. And this was businesslike, purposeful and with a real sense of shared objective. Our ministers respect each other and it was a very good conversation. You asked what came out of it. We will do more together on the maritime domain, We will do more together in cohering the work of our diplomats across the Indo Pacific on strategic fields where we very much feel alike. And then there were particular announcements on work together on hydrography , on a 1.5 track Strategic Dialogue that our officials and ministers and academicians will have together. We will continue aircraft deployments to each other's territory and indeed naval deployments to each other's territory. So there will be a stronger sense of interoperability to put into our forces and normalizing the already higher level of activity between our forces that we see. Also a bit of discussion on important economic spheres in space, especially the green energy supply chain where Australia and India have complementary interests and we can work together. So overall, it was a really terrific hit out and I think I know our ministers left feeling very much satisfied that this bilateral relationship continues to be on a clearly upward trajectory.

WION: The relationship on upward trajectory, but briefly, how do you characterize this relationship today?

Philip Green: It's at the highest point that it's ever been. And my Prime Minister has given me a very clear signal, but what he expects me to do is to push it as far and as fast as we possibly can. And, you know, for me, there are three strategic drivers. But the first is that in our views on the Indo Pacific, we are aligned in a way that we'd never have been and we're going to work together. In the economic field, there's a very high level of complementarity. Your society is growing fast and has much energy and vibrancy. We have a lot of energy, innovations, I will tell you what we have, we have the minerals, the metals, the critical minerals, the energy that can serve to support your economy as well as things in the education frame. And then the third field is what we call the human bridge, that nearly a million people of Indian origin who now make Australia home, in our context, that's a lot they're making a big, they're making big contribution to our society. And we want them to make a bigger contribution to our bilateral relationship and we're very confident that they will.

WION: So let's now go to various pillars starting with education, we saw the opening up of an Australian university in Gujarat which is a first for India as well. So education remains an aspect if we can talk about that and especially Indian students, one of the challenges the Indian students face is the visa issues. You talk about that as well, the problems they face.

Philip Green: Well, I think first of all, they don't face problems, they have success. And the processing times for Indian students seeking a visit to Australia are now very short. We had a period of up to COVID where there was an explosion where we weren't able to cope with that and press sometimes for longer. Now they are now shorter. People who have the right qualifications to go to Australia will get a visa and many are in fact that number is increasing and now Indian students are the second largest cohort of international students we have in Australia. But we're opening a whole new chapter next year, because for the first time there will be Australian branch campuses in India. And as you say, the first two will be in Gujarat and we're very much looking forward to University of Wollongong and Deakin that they will be operating courses from the middle of next year. That's a huge new development. And as a result of the Indian government's decision to allow foreign branch campuses in other parts of India apart from GIFT city, we think that there will be many who will follow the same footsteps.

WION: Another pillar is defense which has grown leaps and bounds. We have seen this year Indian submarines going to Australia, Indian forces taking part in exercises in Australia and of course the Malabar exercises as well. So if you can talk about the defense aspect, where do you see the focus area, any new developments which are expected to happen

Philip Green: AUSTRA HIND 22 exercises took place in Australia, that's mostly army but with Navy and Air Force elements as well. It's happening in Perth, Australia with nearly 100 Indian soldiers. So I expect that higher level of tempo of exercises, higher levels of interoperability, but essentially with a start a key thing that we are going to do more on his maritime domain awareness. We have a large Indian Ocean, especially the eastern Indian Ocean, which is of interest to both of us. We can each know something about what's going on in that domain but we can't know all of it. It's massive. So working together, we can find ways of understanding more about that. And then at the day to day level, we are just normalizing closer cooperation with defense and security agencies here in India and back in Canberra and that continues to go from strength to strength.

WION: How both countries are working in the Pacific. When the Deputy PM came here in India, he talked about Indian humanitarian support reaching Tonga using the MLSA. Indian PM going to the Pacific, if you can talk about India and Australia working together in the Pacific?

Philip Green: You know, we've already got some really good runs on the board here. Don't forget that in the middle of COVID, it was Australia and India that cooperated to get vaccines to the Pacific. They've got vaccines manufactured in India and desperately needed by the small countries for the Pacific. Of course, we have a lot of logistic capability there. Our aircraft fly in the air all the time, and we essentially need the last mile delivery to Pacific countries are vaccines produced and donated by India. So that's a great start. As you said Prime Minister Modi was there in Papua New Guinea earlier this year. We are the largest development corporation donor to the South Pacific. We regard South Pacific countries with our family, and they are the first call of our resources. As a result, you know, we know a fair bit about what their development needs are. We respect India's capability to produce development assistance to these countries which is appropriate to their circumstances. And so our role is to provide whatever guidance and support we can to the Indian effort to provide development assistance in our meeting.

WION: Any trilateral initiative?

Philip Green: That may be something for the future. But what we're very keen to do initially is to make sure that we provide whatever support the Indian government wants to ensure that good development assistance comes to our Pacific neighbors.

WION: How do you see the Quad, and also the grapevine on the 27th January. Is Australia planning to attend that quad summit?

Philip Green: I will leave announcements about the dates of the quad summit to the people who should be making them and notably Prime Minister Modi. But let me say this, I mean, I spoke to the Prime Minister when he was here for the G 20. He's very much looking forward to the quad summit and we'll be flexible to make sure that we are available at a mutually convenient time. So it's, of course, a vitally important forum for us with our traditional alliance partner, the United States, with Japan with whom we've had a deep, powerful economic partnership for decades, but now in a rapid path to developing stronger security partnerships. And with India, we have never previously seen the level of strategic alignment that we're currently showing. So for us, it's very exciting. Now, you asked about what's going on. Well, you know, I remind you that during COVID 400 million vaccines were delivered by quad countries to countries in the Indo Pacific. So there's a lot of runs already on the board. We're focused on ensuring that our region remains peaceful and that it has an open and inclusive and free character. We're providing important public goods to countries of the region that will help their sovereign capability, capabilities and counter cyber capabilities in helping them do maritime domain awareness, capabilities in building high quality sustainable infrastructure. So there's a wide canvas on which we're working. And our partnership, we think, is vital for our future and there's a huge support for it in Australia.

WION:&nbsp;So diaspora is another aspect of the relationship. We saw when the Prime Minister traveled to Sydney, Harris Park became Little India. If we can talk about that. If we can talk about Khalistan extremists, we saw earlier this year. They were involved in protests and also action by the Australian authorities. If you can sum up the aspects of diaspora, how they are playing an important role and what Australia is doing to deal with Khalistan extremism.

Philip Green: The first thing is, there are now nearly a million people of Indian origin who made Australia their home and they are making a big contribution to our society. We warmly welcome them, and we are as the government seeking to engage them in our bilateral relationship. We've set up set up a center for Australia India relations, not far from Harris Spark, which is led by two Australians of Indian origin, high quality people, and their job is to make sure that the Australian diaspora the Indian diaspora in Australia is activated so that it can benefit the bilateral relationship. But I'll give you an obvious example. People of Indian origin in Australia will understand what Australia can do and understand India's economic systems. There may be ways in which they can support trade and economic activity between our nations. That's an opportunity we don't want to miss. So you spoke about Khalistan. Look. What is very important in Australia, is that the two things that are vitally important , people have the right to demonstrate and undertake a peaceful protest. That's a core part of our democracy. And we will always allow that to take place. The focus is on peace and our security authorities , migration authorities and police authorities are very active in making sure that those demonstrations, when they occur, happen within normal parameters. We are acutely focused on defending the properties of the Indian consul general, the high commission that is important for India's respect and dignity and we spend a lot of effort making sure that no problems occur there and they haven't.

WION: But there were certain reports of the Hindu temples being vandalized in Australia. I mean, what has been the action taken on that?

Philip Green: Well, those activities if they have occurred will be closely investigated by Australian police authorities. That sort of activity warrants the police doing the best investigation that they possibly can, whether they will actually be able to find the perpetrators. We can't tell. But I can assure you that there is a very deep focus not just in the federal government in Australia, but also in state governments on avoiding these sorts of actions and undertaking the correct police response. Whenever they do.

WION: India and Australia share an ocean, the Indian ocean. how both countries are working together in the Indian Ocean to deal with problems like illegal fishing like piracy, human trafficking, so any mechanism which is being dealt with or whoever

Philip Green: There is always talks about maritime domain awareness so that we both understand better what is happening in our shared Indian Ocean. And all of the fields that you mentioned are fields in which we are acting. I have staff from the Navy. I have staff from the Australian Border Force, from the Australian home affairs authorities and a day does not go past where they are not engaging with their Indian counterparts about these activities. So we will be doing more because we take ever more seriously the significance of them, especially the Northeast Indian Ocean, and for us for Australia as we take a greater focus on that area of the world. and it's important that we have decided to host an Indian Ocean conference of ministers in Perth in February next year as part of that effort. As we undertake that closer engagement in the Indian Ocean, India will be our most vital partner.

WION: So my last question to you is how much China is a concern for Australia, here in Delhi, China is a major concern with the at the border, you have been facing problems as well if we can sum up the China problem in the Indo Pacific.

Philip Green: If iI sum it up, we will cooperate with China where we can and we will disagree with them where we must. We have an economic relationship with China which is important to us. Our Prime Minister made a visit to China recently and we have had some imperfections in our bilateral economic relations and some of those have been resolved. We're pleased about that. We think that engagement with China and a level of cooperation with China is valuable. But we have differences with China. We ask the question, why is it that China is taking the biggest military modernization in the world since the Second World War and that is happening without as far as we can see any open source explanation of its rationale or any strategic reassurance about what support. So, we are cooperating with China where we can but we will disagree and we will ask questions of them where we must on issues that are difficult.

India most vital partner in Indian ocean: Australian Envoy Philip Green to WION

In a devastating turn of events last week, a 23-year-old Australian man, identified as Josh Taylor, met with a fatal accident at a remote campsite on Bribie Island in Australia's Brisbane.&nbsp;

Taylor, accompanied by friends and family, was out on a day at the beach in Queensland on Saturday,&nbsp;when he reportedly fell into a deep hole dug for the purpose of roasting a pig.

Eyewitnesses told Australian media that Taylor stood up from his chair, lost his footing, and fell into the hole as its walls collapsed around him. Taylor's friends sought assistance from fellow beachgoers to get Taylor out of the 1.5 metres of sand before the paramedics arrived on the scene.

A total of 15 people were involved in the effort to rescue Taylor but he could not be retrieved with a live pulse.

He was subsequently airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical state, where he succumbed on Thursday (Dec 8), the Queensland police confirmed in an official statement.

<h2>What next?</h2>

Taylor's friends sought assistance from fellow beachgoers to get Taylor out of the 1.5 metres of sand before the paramedics arrived on the scene. A total of 15 people were involved in the effort to rescue Taylor but he could not be retrieved with a live pulse. He was subsequently airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical state, where he succumbed on Thursday (Dec 8), the Queensland police confirmed in an official statement. What next? Man dies after getting buried deep in sand pit near beach

Two 26-year-old friends, Harry Kooros and Jake Loiterton, have made headlines by breaking the <a href="https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2023/11/australian-duo-drink-at-99-bars-in-one-day-in-record-breaking-pub-crawl-761723">Guinness World Record for the most bar visits in a single night</a>. The dynamic duo from Sydney achieved this remarkable feat by visiting an astounding 99 pubs in just 24 hours.

Motivated by a dual purpose, Kooros and Loiterton embarked on this ambitious venture to raise funds for MS Australia—a non-profit organisation dedicated to multiple sclerosis research—and to breathe new life into Sydney's nightlife.

They expressed concerns about the adverse impact of legislative changes and the Covid pandemic on the city's once-vibrant nightlife.

<h2>A night of extravagant spending</h2>

The cost of their record-breaking night out was no small feat, with the two friends collectively spending over AUD 1500 ($983).&nbsp;

The pair strategically initiated their bar-hopping adventure&nbsp;at midnight, capitalising on the extended closing times of the late-night venues.

Following Sydney's regulations, which prohibit intoxicated people&nbsp;from using private transportation, the friends continued their quest on foot.

However, challenges arose as early as two hours into their journey when Kooros experienced the consequences of excess beer consumption, leading to a brief setback. Despite the setback, a quick reassessment allowed him to regroup and press on.

Exhaustion set in by 5 am, prompting a brief respite in a park before resuming their adventure&nbsp;at 9 am as more pubs opened their doors. With minimal downtime and a strict time limit of 14 minutes between pubs, the friends persisted throughout the day.

While the duo achieved their goal of breaking the record by early evening, they decided to continue until they reached 100 pubs. However, their quest concluded prematurely due to a miscount, as they mistakenly believed they had reached their 100th pub.

Tight bowling helped propel Tahlia McGrath's Adelaide Strikers to a nail-biting three-run win over Brisbane Heat for a second straight women's Big Bash League title on Saturday. Jess Jonassen's Heat restricted the Strikers to a modest 125-5 off their 20 overs after losing the bat flip at Adelaide Oval.

The home side had looked on track for a decent total on 71-2 at halfway but managed just 54 runs in the last 10 overs, with a clinical Nicola Hancock the pick of the bowlers with 3-23. Heat's hard work went to waste in the run chase, with the visitors compiling just 122-8 with player-of-the-match Amanda-Jade Wellington taking 3-16 and Megan Schutt 2-30 in a game decided on the last ball.

"This is such a special team, seriously, everyone knows their roles," said skipper McGrath. "We have so much fun and we keep showing up. I'm so proud of this group." It was the Strikers' second consecutive title in the tournament's ninth season, having beaten the Sydney Sixers in last year's decider.

The Strikers had a mixed start to the season but have been a near unstoppable force since, winning 10 their past 11 games. Their only loss during that run was against the Heat. "A bit emotional to be honest. A few tears out there," said Schutt.

"We set out a bold goal last year to go back-to-back and to achieve it is amazing." Jonassen acknowledged the Strikers had been "the benchmark of the competition all year".

"To our girls, commiserations. I'm super proud of you all, we've worked very hard just to get to this moment," she said. "Keep your heads up, I know it hurts, but we'll be back bigger and better and stronger next year." The 13th season of the men's Big Bash League starts on December 7.

Australia head coach&nbsp;Eddie&nbsp;Jones&nbsp;on Tuesday ruled out a rumoured switch to Japan, pledging to stick with the Wallabies following a disastrous Rugby World Cup campaign. "I'm staying, mate. I've always been committed to Australian rugby and I want to leave it in a better place,"&nbsp;Jones&nbsp;told a press conference in Sydney amid speculation of his imminent resignation.&nbsp;

Although the pugnacious 63-year-old said he has unfinished business with Australian rugby, he could not guarantee he would see out the rest of his four-year contract. "That's not my decision," he replied when asked if he would still be in charge for the 2027 World Cup, which Australia will host.&nbsp;

"I don't control those sorts of things, all I do is coach. We've got a review going forward and we'll see what happens at the end of the review."

As the faltering Australian side stumbled through its tournament pool games in France, reports emerged that&nbsp;Jones&nbsp;had been secretly interviewing for the head coach role in Japan.&nbsp;

Jones&nbsp;has warm relationships with key powerbrokers at the top of Japanese rugby, having previously coached the Brave Blossoms between 2012 and 2015.

<h2>Rumours</h2>

"I haven't been speaking to anyone, mate,"&nbsp;Jones&nbsp;assured reporters on Tuesday.

"Where the rumours come from? I don't know mate, you'll have to tell me."

Jones&nbsp;also defended his decision to stack the World Cup squad with a band of unproven rookies, leaving a host of veterans at home including 125-Test former skipper Michael Hooper.

"The results from the World Cup weren't what we hoped, but I still think I've made the right decision," he said.&nbsp;

"Everyone has got their own judgement, haven't they? My choice was to go with youth and I stand by that."

Jones&nbsp;defended the team's performances, saying his one regret was telling reporters to "give themselves an uppercut" during a testy press conference at Sydney Airport before jetting off for France.

"I need to give myself an uppercut," a smiling&nbsp;Jones&nbsp;said on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Part of&nbsp;Jones's long-term pitch has been the need to blood new talent ahead of the British and Irish Lions tour in 2025, and the home World Cup two years after that.&nbsp;

<h2>People love drama</h2>

After years of financial decline, Australian rugby is banking on a much-needed cash injection from those two marquee events -- and can ill afford to continue alienating crowds with lacklustre performances.

"I think I've left the Australian team in a great position to go on to 2027,"&nbsp;Jones&nbsp;said.&nbsp;

"I didn't come back to Australia to have a holiday -- to sit down at Coogee Beach and have some fish and chips and a nice flat white," he added.

"It was always going to be a battle." Once dubbed the "Walking Headline",&nbsp;Jones&nbsp;said it was no surprise his recent travails had whipped up a media frenzy in Australia.&nbsp;

"People love to see controversy over a coach," he said.&nbsp;"Either a player getting drunk, misbehaving, or the coach getting the sack.&nbsp;

"That creates headlines and people love that sort of drama."

Jones&nbsp;was hailed as the saviour of Australian rugby when he returned to the national setup earlier this year, replacing New Zealander Dave Rennie after a string of bad results. Fresh from inking a lucrative four-year contract, he predicted the Wallabies could win the World Cup this year through a special "smash and grab" raid on rugby's greatest prize.

Instead the side were bundled out in pool play -- their worst result at the tournament -- and have now slumped to seven losses during&nbsp;Jones's nine games in charge.

Italy won the&nbsp;Davis&nbsp;Cup&nbsp;for the first time since 1976 as Jannik Sinner crushed Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-0 to seal a 2-0 win over Australia on Sunday in Malaga. The world number four clinched victory in the second singles rubber after Matteo Arnaldi dug deep to beat Alexei Popyrin 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 in the opening clash.

Sinner, who remarkably beat top-ranked superstar Novak Djokovic twice in one day on Saturday as Italy eliminated Serbia, secured his country's second title against Lleyton Hewitt's 28-time winners in style. "I felt quite good today ... this is a really important win for me, the whole team and Italy together," said Sinner.

"This is something different, really special, because you don't play for yourself, you play for the whole team." The Italian demoralised the scampering De Minaur with a relentless performance, overpowering him with vicious ground-strokes to the delight of the majority of the packed Martin Carpena arena.

Sinner had won each of the five prior meetings between the pair and the world number 12 came no closer this time, brutally dismantled in 81 minutes. Australia's wait for a&nbsp;Davis Cup trophy&nbsp;goes on, with their last coming in 2003, but Italy, who last reached a final in 1998, celebrated wildly when De Minaur went wide to end the tie.

On Saturday Italy were on the verge of elimination, but Sinner saved three match points against Djokovic to force a deciding doubles clash. "Yesterday we were one point away from being out and now we can celebrate winning, I think we can all be very, very happy," said Sinner, after ending Italy's 47-year wait, the third-longest gap between titles in&nbsp;Davis&nbsp;Cup&nbsp;history.

Sinner, who lost the ATP Finals showdown with Djokovic a week ago in Turin, deserves special credit for his stunning displays in Malaga -- he won all five rubbers he played in. Laser-focused from the start, he broke early in the first set for a 2-1 lead when De Minaur sent a lob long and then consolidated with a powerful forehand.&nbsp;

The 22-year-old brought up three set points and clinched the first set with the second of them when De Minaur volleyed beyond the baseline. In the second set Sinner produced 19 winners to just five unforced errors to sweep to victory. "I will find ways to get better, to be able to hurt these types of players," said De Minaur, who also suffered disappointment with Australia in last year's final. "Today I just didn't have enough."

<h2>&nbsp;Clinging on&nbsp;</h2>

Arnaldi had to cling on to beat Popyrin in the first match. "I think I won one of the most important matches in my life, I don't know what to say right now," said an emotional Arnaldi. "I'm sorry for Alexei, because he deserved to win, for sure -- he was playing better, but sometimes&nbsp;Davis&nbsp;is like this." Arnaldi, ranked 44th, exchanged breaks with Popyrin and converted his fourth set point to take a scrappy first stanza.

The Australian hit back strongly in the second, racing into a double break and holding for 4-0. Arnaldi finally got on the board in the fifth game but Popyrin -- who produced six aces in the second set to the Italian's zero -- served it out to force a decisive third.

The erratic Arnaldi saved break points in his first, second and fourth service games without putting pressure on Popyrin's serve until earning a break point which the 24-year-old saved, holding for 4-4. Popyrin was on top but could not make it count to get the breakthrough, with Arnaldi saving yet another break point on his way to a 5-4 lead.

Despite being outplayed for the best part of the third set Arnaldi converted his first set point to put Italy ahead in the tie with a powerful forehand, with Sinner completing the job without a fuss. "(Sinner) backed up what he did yesterday against Novak and played extremely good tennis," said Hewitt, who played for Australia last time they won the&nbsp;cup&nbsp;20 years ago. "I think the conditions and surface suit him perfectly, as well, which makes life pretty tough." Victory completed a superb year for Italian tennis, after their women's team finished as runners-up in the Billie Jean King&nbsp;Cup.

Italy won the Davis Cup for the first time since 1976 as Jannik Sinner crushed Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-0 to seal a 2-0 win over Australia on Sunday in Malaga. The world number four clinched victory in the second singles rubber after Matteo Arnaldi dug deep to beat Alexei Popyrin 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 in the opening clash.

"Yesterday we were one point away from being out and now we can celebrate winning, I think we can all be very, very happy," said Sinner, after ending Italy's 47-year wait, the third-longest gap between titles in Davis Cup history. Also Read: Franco Escobar helps Houston Dynamo beat Kansas City for spot in MLS Western Conference final Sinner, who lost the ATP Finals showdown with Djokovic a week ago in Turin, deserves special credit for his stunning displays in Malaga -- he won all five rubbers he played in. Laser-focused from the start, he broke early in the first set for a 2-1 lead when De Minaur sent a lob long and then consolidated with a powerful forehand. "Today I just didn't have enough." Clinging on Arnaldi had to cling on to beat Popyrin in the first match. "I think I won one of the most important matches in my life, I don't know what to say right now," said an emotional Arnaldi. "I'm sorry for Alexei, because he deserved to win, for sure -- he was playing better, but sometimes Davis is like this." Arnaldi, ranked 44th, exchanged breaks with Popyrin and converted his fourth set point to take a scrappy first stanza. "(Sinner) backed up what he did yesterday against Novak and played extremely good tennis," said Hewitt, who played for Australia last time they won the cup 20 years ago. "I think the conditions and surface suit him perfectly, as well, which makes life pretty tough." Victory completed a superb year for Italian tennis, after their women's team finished as runners-up in the Billie Jean King Cup.

An AFC Cup tie between Australia's Macarthur FC and Shan United of Myanmar has been moved from Sydney to a neutral venue in Bangkok after the Australian government refused to grant visas to the visiting players,&nbsp;Football&nbsp;Australia (FA) said on Monday. Macarthur, an A-League club based in the Sydney suburb of Campbelltown, were criticised by human rights groups for playing an away match against Shan United in Yangon in late September.

The return fixture will now be played at Bangkok's BG Stadium on Thursday. "This move to a neutral venue follows the Australian government&nbsp;declining to grant Australian&nbsp;visas for&nbsp;Shan United FC players and officials,&nbsp;meaning there was no viable way of playing the game on Australian soil," the FA said in a statement.

Australia's&nbsp;Davis&nbsp;Cup&nbsp;players have vowed to return to Malaga and claim the title next year after losing a second successive final in the international&nbsp;men's team tournament on Sunday. The Australians had the misfortune to come up against a red-hot Jannik Sinner on Sunday and it was his 6-3 6-0 singles victory over Alex De Minaur that secured a first title for Italy in 47 years and rendered the doubles rubber superfluous.

De Minaur also featured in last year's loss to Canada in the final at the same arena and the world number 12 took solace from how well Australia had performed since the finals format was changed to the best of three rubbers. "There hasn't been another nation that's gone back-to-back in the last two years, so we are showing a pretty good effort collectively," he told reporters.

"We are very, very close and it stinks like hell but, like I said last year in this same position, we'll be back. We'll get this. I mean, we've got a very, very strong future ahead of us." Australia won the last of their 28 titles in 2003 and have reached the last two finals without the talents of Nick Kyrgios, who is currently sidelined by injury and last played&nbsp;Davis&nbsp;Cup&nbsp;in 2019.

Captain Lleyton Hewitt has forged a strong team bond between the likes of De Minaur, world number 40 Alexei Popyrin and the 55th ranked Jordan Thompson as well as the doubles pairing of Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell.

A crestfallen De Minaur conceded he had been outclassed by world number four Sinner in the second singles match after Popyrin had been beaten by Matteo Arnaldi in the opener. "Jannik is riding this amazing wave of confidence ... it's seriously impressive the level he's showing," he added.

"I will find ways to get better, to be able to hurt these types of players. Today I just didn't have enough. I'm disappointed I wasn't able to give the boys a chance to play the doubles, that's probably the biggest disappointment."

Tennis: 'We'll be back', Australia's Davis Cup players vow to win title next year

Nearly 10 days after Australia scripted history by beating India in the ODI World Cup final, captain Pat Cummins has revealed the underlying motivation that guided his team to upstage India on the ultimate stage.&nbsp;

Cummins said it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that his side wanted to take on by silencing the 130,000-strong Indian crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. So, whatever happens today, it’s a special day. We tried to soak it all in. It was a sea of blue, it’s not like people were wearing casuals, and everyone was wearing the blue Indian jersey," Cummins was quoted as saying by ABC News.&nbsp;

“I was just thinking it would be satisfying if we shut them all up basically, we could hear a silence, that’s going to be satisfying. The enormity of it sunk in when we were in that cauldron,” he added.

<h2>Cummins' tactical masterclass</h2>

Right from winning the toss to apply the&nbsp;finishing touches to the game, Australia managed to silence the Indian crowd. Cummins was instrumental in making it happen as his field placements and bowling changes worked like a charm on the big day.&nbsp;

After India lost Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer within the powerplay overs, Cummins utilised the inability of Indian batters to seize the moment and bowled his fifth bowling option out.

Such was the squeeze applied by Cummins that after Sharma's dismissal in the 11th over, India only managed four boundaries throughout the innings, with three coming off the bat of tailenders.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-2023-breaking-hearts-of-14bn-indians-australia-win-final-to-become-six-time-world-champions-660543">Also read |&nbsp;World Cup 2023: Breaking 1.4bn Indian hearts, Australia win final to become six-time world champions</a>

Apart from his tactical acumen, Cummins turned up with the ball as well, finishing with figures reading&nbsp;10-0-34-2. He got the wickets of Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. Kohli's wicket proved to be another turning point in the match as India never recovered from thereon and finished with a below-par total that was chased with relative ease by the likes of Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne.&nbsp;

'Shut them all up': Pat Cummins reveals underlying motivation to beat India in World Cup final

More than 100 climate activists, including five children and a 97-year-old reverend, have been arrested, said the police, after a two-day blockade of one of the world’s largest coal ports in Australia, on Monday (Nov 27).&nbsp;

The protest group Rising Tide, which organised the blockade claims that the 30-hour blockade of the shipping lane in Port of Newcastle over the weekend prevented over half a million tonnes of coal from leaving the country.

<h2>What did the climate protesters do?</h2>

Hundreds of activists took to the Newcastle port’s shipping lane on Australia’s east coast swimming or using kayaks in protest of the government’s climate inaction and imploring them to end the country’s long reliance on fossil fuel exports.

Canberra is the world’s second-biggest coal exporter and heavily relies on fossil fuels for its own electricity needs. The government is also reportedly in the midst of planning a string of new coal mines, oil fields and gas projects.&nbsp;

The port in Australia’s east is around 170 kilometres away from Sydney and is said to be the country’s most important terminal for coal shipments.

Around 3,000 people from across the country took part in the 30-hour blockade, reported BBC, the permission for which was granted by the authorities. However, police boats reportedly started closing in after the deadline had crossed and the crowds of activists refused to leave the water.&nbsp;

Australia’s competition regulator on Monday advised to revise its competition laws in the wake of the rapid expansion of digital platforms like Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta and Microsoft in the country.

The reasoning provided by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) behind this announcement was the increasing risk of these platforms being involved in invasive data collection and other practices.&nbsp;

"Our proposed reforms include a call for targeted consumer protections and service-specific codes to prevent anti-competitive conduct by particular designated digital platforms," ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said.

<h2>Australian watchdog calls for new competition laws for digital platforms&nbsp;</h2>

ACCC has not made any specific findings of anti-competitive conduct but said digital platforms with significant market power can manipulate it to their benefit.&nbsp;

As per ACCC, these digital platforms can utilise their market hegemony such as the bundling of products, and pre-installation and default settings to limit customer choice or deter innovation from competitors.&nbsp;

When it comes to data collection, ACCC found that these providers have greater access to rich consumer data via expansion, which is unfair to other digital platforms For example, Amazon, Apple and Google collect vast amounts of consumer data through smart home devices. It’s not always clear from the relevant privacy policies if the data collected exceeds that which is needed for device functionality or product improvement.

The regulator has also proposed new mandatory obligations on all digital platforms to address scams, harmful apps, and fake reviews, including notice and action requirements and stronger verification of business users and reviews.

The report also considers the role of digital platform providers in developing emerging technologies. The five largest digital platforms, mentioned earlier, are making investments in research and development and buying other smaller companies in areas such as generative AI to ensure they remain in comfortable positions in the developing digital economy.

“The critical role digital platform service providers have in the development of new technologies like artificial intelligence and cloud computing demonstrates their importance to the Australian economy, now and in the future,” Cass-Gottlieb said.

An Indian-origin student in Australia is currently in a medically induced coma following an assault. A suspect, identified as 25-year-old Benjamin Dodge Collings, has been taken into custody and charged with criminal assault. The incident occurred on November 5 at a precinct in Tasmania, where the student, in his 20s, pursuing a master's degree at the University of Tasmania, was attacked around 4.20 am local time.

The victim was promptly taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital in Hobart, Tasmania, after the assault.

Reports indicate that he suffered 'extradural bleeding,' leading to a shift in his brain. Additionally, his right lung collapsed. This demanded several hours of brain surgery.

Collings, residing in Lenah Valley, was arrested by the police shortly after the incident.

Now, the accused is facing charges, including criminal code assault, with a maximum prison sentence of 21 years.

Collings has been granted magistrate bail and is scheduled to appear in court on December 4, facing charges such as assault, providing false information, resisting a police officer, and unrelated driving offences.

The University of Tasmania's Media Director, Ben Wild, acknowledged the incident and stated that the university has been in regular contact with the student's family.

They have also assigned a complex case manager, translators, liaison officers, and provided accommodation and other forms of support.

In response to questions about the measures taken by the university, Ben Wild reportedly mentioned the limitations due to the ongoing legal proceedings, stating, "The case has gone through the court system as well, and we are very limited in what we can say."

<h2>Residents raise concerns&nbsp;</h2>

There are concerns raised by the community. Reports quoting the victim's friends noted that his family in Assam does not possess passports to travel to Australia.

The police have stated that there is no evidence to suggest that the assault was racially motivated, media reports said.

Residents, however, have expressed frustration, given the severity of the victim's condition, and the fact that the charged individual has been granted bail.

Germanjit Singh Gill, a resident, reportedly posted on the 'Indians in Tasmania' Facebook group, expressing concern and seeking community support for the victim.

"The person charged has been set out on bail whereas the poor man is fighting for his life," he wrote and added, "Someone assaulted our brother for no reason, and we can't even ask questions? We are harnessing community support to help the victim."&nbsp;

The spike in rat population on beaches in Queensland is believed to be induced by the rainy season. Two factors contributed to their rising numbers which has now left residents of the area wary.&nbsp;

First off, the wet season is conducive to rodent breeding and secondly, more harvest resulting from the rains attracts rats as they trickle down the coastal areas looking for food. However, not all rats survive their journey to the beaches. Media reports quoting experts say that some of these rats do not survive the journey, triggering rat plague in the region.

Off the coast of Western Australia, underwater cameras captured an extraordinary phenomenon involving bottlenose dolphins and local crabbers in a unique battle over bait. The Bunbury area, approximately 160 kilometres south of Perth, has been witness to a decades-long conflict where dolphins swiftly seize dead fish from crab pots before crabs can claim their prize.

Fearing potential risks of net entanglement for the dolphins, wildlife conservationist Rodney Peterson collaborated with the Dolphin Discovery Center in Bunbury to film this unusual behaviour, raising concerns about the safety of the marine mammals.

Over a two-year period, a collaborative team of filmmakers, conservationists, and researchers documented the dolphins' tactics in Koombana Bay, exposing the secrets of these "crab bait thieves."

The footage showed dolphins using their long snouts, jaws, and teeth to extract bait from crab pots, even when concealed beneath the pots or secured in latched boxes. Researchers, including Dr Simon Allen and Dr Delphine Chabanne, were astonished by the complexity and novelty of the observed behaviour.

While dolphins globally are known to pilfer fish and bait, the interactions&nbsp;between the dolphins and crabbers in Koombana Bay stand out for their unique complexity. Experts highlight the impressive problem-solving skills displayed by the dolphins, with only specific individuals engaging in this behaviour, suggesting it may be more for 'fun' or 'convenience' than out of hunger.

Two dolphins, a mother named Calypso and her calf Reggae, emerged as leaders among the bait thieves. Their clever antics add a layer of complexity to the interactions, making crabbing a more challenging task for local fishermen.

Despite the dolphins' ingenuity, there are concerns that their behaviour, if widespread, could pose risks to their well-being. The crab bait, being non-nutritious, coupled with the potential for entanglement in more intricate gear, raises concerns for the long-term impact on the local dolphin population.

Researchers have devised a 'dolphin-safe' method by placing bait inside a strong mesh connected to the pot, allowing the dolphins to scan it with echolocation and eyesight, learn that it cannot be opened, and swim away. This approach aims to ensure coexistence between dolphins and crabbers while minimising risks to the marine mammals.
