ODI World Cup 2023: WATCH | South Africa's Aiden Markram almost BREAKS DOWN in three-wicket loss vs Australia

India and Australia will face off in the World Cup final on Sunday in Ahmedabad. There are eerie similarities between the campaigns of 2003 and 2023, however this time it is India who will enter the final as favourites, while Australia will be the underdogs. 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore looks ahead of the clash in a conversation with Wion's Esha Hanspal.

Sikh businessman says facing racial abuse in Australia for past several months

<p>Australia skipper Pat Cummins said his players will draw on experience from previous title wins in their World Cup semi-final clash with&nbsp;South&nbsp;Africa, spurred on by Glenn Maxwell's heroics having given them "an extra leg".</p>

<p>Five-time winners Australia went down to the Proteas in the league stage by 134 runs before they won seven straight matches to make the semi-final in Kolkata on Thursday.</p>

<p><strong>Also Read:</strong>&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/opinions-blogs/kohlis-record-breaking-ton-shamis-sensational-seven-power-india-to-the-odi-world-cup-final-659018">Kohli's record-breaking ton, Shami's sensational seven power India to the ODI World Cup final</a></p>

<p>Australia, who lost an ODI series in&nbsp;South&nbsp;Africa&nbsp;in September, have beaten their rivals twice in World Cup semi-finals.</p>

<p>"You start from scratch every time you play," Cummins told reporters. "They're a team we've played quite a lot and know quite well."</p>

<p>"I think what helps us is we've got a lot of guys that have been in this situation before that have won the one-day World Cup, T20 World Cup, various other tournaments in big moments. So, I think that really helps. You can draw on that in the middle of the contest."</p>

<p>The most dramatic World Cup semi-final between the two teams was a tied match in Edgbaston in 1999 with Australia moving into the final due to a better group stage finish.</p>

<p>Cummins said "the 99 World Cup one, it's kind of folklore, isn't it? I've seen that replay heaps of times, you hear the stories."</p>

<p>Cummins, along with David Warner, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood was part of Australia's 2015 World Cup triumph at home and their maiden T20 World Cup title win in Dubai in 2021.</p>

<p>At this World Cup, Australia began with two losses including a defeat to India in their opener but have been on a roll since and Cummins takes inspiration from the winning streak.</p>

<p>"You can either build it up as the most important game of your life, or you can business as usual, really," Cummins said.</p>

<p>"And I think with experience, I think just keeping it pretty chilled and business as usual for our group seems to be the way to go. So, you draw back on those past wins but you also just draw back on the last few weeks and know that us at our best is good enough."</p>

<h2>'An extra leg'</h2>

<p>Australia have witnessed some brilliant individual performances including an unbeaten 201 from Maxwell in their dramatic win over Afghanistan and a match-winning 177 not out from Mitchell Marsh against Bangladesh.</p>

<p>Maxwell defied predictions and played through cramps from a dire 91-7 to pull the team to victory in their chase of 292 at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium.</p>

Australia skipper Pat Cummins said his players will draw on experience from previous title wins in their World Cup semi-final clash with South Africa, spurred on by Glenn Maxwell's heroics having given them "an extra leg". Five-time winners Australia went down to the Proteas in the league stage by 134 runs before they won seven straight matches to make the semi-final in Kolkata on Thursday. Also Read: Kohli's record-breaking ton, Shami's sensational seven power India to the ODI World Cup final Australia, who lost an ODI series in South Africa in September, have beaten their rivals twice in World Cup semi-finals. "You start from scratch every time you play," Cummins told reporters. "They're a team we've played quite a lot and know quite well." "I think what helps us is we've got a lot of guys that have been in this situation before that have won the one-day World Cup, T20 World Cup, various other tournaments in big moments. So, I think that really helps. You can draw on that in the middle of the contest." The most dramatic World Cup semi-final between the two teams was a tied match in Edgbaston in 1999 with Australia moving into the final due to a better group stage finish. Cummins said "the 99 World Cup one, it's kind of folklore, isn't it? I've seen that replay heaps of times, you hear the stories." Cummins, along with David Warner, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood was part of Australia's 2015 World Cup triumph at home and their maiden T20 World Cup title win in Dubai in 2021. At this World Cup, Australia began with two losses including a defeat to India in their opener but have been on a roll since and Cummins takes inspiration from the winning streak. "You can either build it up as the most important game of your life, or you can business as usual, really," Cummins said. "And I think with experience, I think just keeping it pretty chilled and business as usual for our group seems to be the way to go. So, you draw back on those past wins but you also just draw back on the last few weeks and know that us at our best is good enough." 'An extra leg' Australia have witnessed some brilliant individual performances including an unbeaten 201 from Maxwell in their dramatic win over Afghanistan and a match-winning 177 not out from Mitchell Marsh against Bangladesh. Maxwell defied predictions and played through cramps from a dire 91-7 to pull the team to victory in their chase of 292 at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. They now have the opportunity to go all the way and emulate their Rugby team which won the World Cup last month. 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore though isnt convinced they are the real deal.

ODI World Cup 2023: 'It wasn't just...,' Australia batter Glenn Maxwell REVEALS his planning vs Afghanistan

There are some innings that define a player's career. Glenn Maxwell's unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan rescued Australia from a precarious 91/7 with 201 still to get. The Big Show's astonishing assault while battling adversity ranks up there with the greatest knocks ever seen in ODIs. Maxwell's innings drew instant comparisons with Kapil Dev's 175* against Zimbabwe at the 1983 World Cup, Herschelle Gibbs' 175 against Australia in that astonishing 438 chase in Jo'burg and Steve Waugh's 120* against the Proteas in the Super Six stage of the 1999 World Cup. 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore believes rates this innings from Maxwell at the top of the pile.

<p>Patterson remained in the headlines for the case that shook up a small rural town of Leongatha, 110 kilometres southeast of Melbourne.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the police, they arrested Patterson in the morning and began a search of her home with the help of "technology detector dogs". Reports have mentioned t hat the dogs can sniff out electronic devices such as USB keys.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Victoria Police have confirmed that the woman was charged with three counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Today's arrest is just the next step in what has been a complex and thorough investigation by homicide squad detectives and one that is not yet over,"&nbsp; Thomas told reporters.</p>

<p>He added that the probe had been subject to "incredibly intense" media and public interest in Australia and internationally.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I think it is particularly important that we keep in mind that at the heart of this three people have lost their lives," Thomas said, adding that "a tragedy such as this can reverberate for years to come" in smaller communities.&nbsp;</p>

He added that the probe had been subject to "incredibly intense" media and public interest in Australia and internationally.
