<p>Australia has withdrawn from trade talks with the European Union (EU) on a free trade agreement for the second time in three months. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Australia's Trade Minister Don Farrell, who met with European representatives during a Group of Seven meeting in Osaka, expressed his frustration on the matter. "We've not been able to make progress." While expressing hope for future success, Bloomberg quoted him as saying, “Negotiations will continue, and I'm hopeful that one day we will sign a deal that benefits both Australia and our European friends."</p>

<p>The negotiations between Australia and the EU have been ongoing for over five years, with broad consensus achieved in most areas. However, the stumbling block has been related to agricultural issues.</p>

<p>&nbsp;Australia has been pushing for increased access to the European market for products such as beef, mutton, and sugar, while Brussels has been advocating for the elimination of certain geographic locators on products like Prosecco and feta.</p>

<p>The European Commission expressed its regret over the lack of progress, mentioning that the Australian side had reintroduced agricultural offers that did not reflect recent negotiations.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The recent talks in Osaka were considered a last chance for both parties to reach an agreement in the near future. The failure to strike a deal now may result in significant delays, with the possibility of months or even years before an agreement can be reached. Although cautious optimism existed, neither Canberra nor Brussels was entirely convinced that a deal could be struck. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis had previously stated that the deal was "within reach", along with some remaining hurdles to overcome.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On the other hand, the administration of European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen is eager to secure a trade victory after a previous unsuccessful attempt to remove steel and aluminium tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump's administration in the United States. Australia halts trade negotiations with EU. Here's why

Australia has abandoned negotiations with the European Union (EU) in pursuit of a free trade agreement. While there was general agreement on most points, several outstanding agricultural concerns threatened to destroy the whole accord that the two parties had been working on for more than five years.

<p>US tech-giant, Microsoft, has revealed its plans to allocate A$5 billion (equivalent to $3.2 billion) towards the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing capabilities in Australia over a two-year period. This strategic investment encompasses a comprehensive initiative that includes skills development and enhancements in cyber security.</p>

<p>Microsoft's intended expansion will result in a 250 per cent increase in computing capacity within Australia. This augmentation will enable the 13th largest economy globally to cater to the burgeoning demand for cloud computing, which is projected to double between 2022 and 2026 as AI applications become more pervasive.</p>

<p>Brad Smith, Microsoft's Vice Chairman and President, emphasised that this significant spending is a testament to the company's unwavering commitment to contributing to the growth and prosperity of Australia in the AI era.</p>

<p>Apart from the substantial financial commitment, Microsoft has pledged to provide training to 300,000 Australians, equipping them with the skills essential for success in the digital economy. Additionally, the company will expand its cyber threat information-sharing agreement with the Australian Signals Directorate, bolstering the nation's cyber security capabilities.</p>

<p>According to Reuters, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese hailed this initiative, emphasising that it represents a substantial investment in the skills and workforce of the future, asserting the importance of providing Australians with the necessary skills to excel in the rapidly evolving job landscape.</p>

<p>While Microsoft's announcement includes a substantial financial commitment of A$5 billion, specific details regarding the allocation of these funds were not provided in the statement. However, the company disclosed its intention to significantly expand its data centre presence in Australia from 20 sites to 29.</p>

<p>A recent joint report co-authored by Microsoft underlined the potential economic impact of generative AI, a form of automation that adapts to new data inputs. It stated that this technology could contribute up to A$115 billion per year to Australia's economy by 2030 if it is rapidly adopted.</p>

<p>Australia, despite its current absence of AI-specific regulations, has initiated public consultations in 2022 regarding AI regulation. This move is in response to the fast automation developments and follows Microsoft-supported OpenAI's introduction of the lifelike language program ChatGPT in 2022. While AI holds promise, concerns about bias, copyright infringement, and privacy breaches have prompted discussions around safeguarding this evolving technology.</p>

<p>Australia Prime Miniter Anthony Albanese said on Sunday (Oct 22) that he will visit China from November 4 to 7 and will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. The visit is being looked at as an attempt by both nations to stabilise the strained relations. China is Australia's biggest trading partner.</p>

<p>The announcement of the trip followed a breakthrough on Saturday in a dispute between two countries over China's wine tariffs that have hurt Australia's sprawling wine-making industry. Albanese's visit would be a first by an Australian leader to China since 2016.</p>

<p>"It is important that we stabilise our relationship with China," Albanese said.</p>

<p>In a statement, he said that he will discuss co-operation in economic ties, climate change and "links between our people"</p>

<p>"I look forward to further engaging with President Xi and Premier Li in Australia's national interest," he said.</p>

<h2><strong>The wine dispute</strong></h2>

<p>Albanese announced late on Saturday that Australia had reached a deal with China to solve its World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute over wine. The deal may potentially clear way for resumption of export of Australian wine to China.</p>

<p>China imposed duties on Australian wine in 2021. In the year before that, exports of Australian wine to China amounted to USD 800 million.</p>

<p>"We have agreed on the issue of wine for there to be a review of China's position on wine tariffs to be conducted over the next months," Albanese told reporters.</p>

<p>"We will suspend our action before the WTO, but we're very confident that this will result in once again Australian wine, a great product, being able to go to China free of the tariffs."</p>

<p>On Sunday, China's commerce ministry said that a consensus was reached with Australia in order to settle the WTO wine dispute and also that over Australian duties on Chinese wind towers.</p>

<p>"China and Australia are important trading partners of each other, and we are willing to work with the Australian side to continue to meet each other halfway through dialogue and consultation," China's Commerce ministry said in a statement.</p>

<p>It added that both countries held "friendly consultations" on WTO disputes of mutual concern and were willing to "jointly promote the stable and healthy development of bilateral economic and trade relations."</p>

<p>Relations between China and Australia have been strained over past year after China made assertive political moves with Pacific Island nations. The region is traditionally seen to be part of Australia's sphere of influence. Australia is also part of the Aukus pact that includes the US and the UK. The pact is seen by China as a move to contain it.</p>

Australia meet Pakistan in a game neither team can afford to lose. 1992 Champions Pakistan are coming off a disappointing loss to India last Saturday while Australia finally got a win under their belt after beating Sri Lanka. Pakistan have also battled a viral bug that left many players under the weather while record five-time champions Australia need their premier batters David Warner and Steven Smith to score big runs. 1996 World Cup-winning coach and former Australian Test cricketer Dav Whatmore sets up the match in Bengaluru with Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo.

<p>Australia said a security review of a 99-year lease held by Chinese company Landbridge on the northern port of Darwin, a key focus of its defence strategy, found it was "not necessary to vary or cancel the lease".</p>

<p>In a statement, the prime minister's department said: "Australians can have confidence that their safety will not be compromised, while ensuring that Australia remains a competitive destination for foreign investment".</p>

<p>It added that monitoring of security arrangements would continue around the northern port, Australia's closest to Asia, where Landbridge operates a commercial wharf and cruise ship terminal.</p>

Hosting more major tournaments on Australia’s radar after Women’s World Cup success

Record-five-time champions Australia have finally got their ICC ODI World Cup campaign underway. The Pat Cummins-led side defeated Sri Lanka by five wickets in Lucknow to break their duck at the tournament. The result leaves 1996 winners Sri Lanka second-last on the points table, with three losses in as many games. Sri Lanka now needs to win all their remaining six games to have a chance of making it to the semi-finals.

ICC World Cup 2023: Five-time champions Australia finally off the mark

<p><meta name="uuid" content="uuid7B6PQKZ4rOTR" /><meta charset="utf-8" /></p>

<p>Desperate for a win in the World Cup campaign, Australia finally struck gold at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Monday (Oct 16) evening, beating Sri Lanka by five wickets. Chasing a modest target of 211, Australia braved initial jitters to comfortably get over the line, courtesy of responsible knocks from Mitchell Marsh (52), Marnus Labuschagne (40), and Josh Inglis (58), with Glenn Maxwell (31*) providing fireworks at the end.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A total of 211 was always going to be a tricky target to defend and despite Sri Lanka's best efforts, the five-time World champions managed to find their way through. Opener David Warner was trapped in front of the stumps by Dilshan Madushanka with DRS showing the ball kissing the leg stump, leading to an exasperated response from the Australian batter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Steve Smith, the ever-reliable no. 3 for Australia did not last long either as he secured his first duck in World Cup history. Madushanka got another one to swing on middle and off as Smith played down the wrong line and got smacked straight on the back leg.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With two quick wickets in the bag, Sri Lanka attempted to up the ante but Mitchell Marsh had other plans. The powerful dasher launched a counter-attack campaign and started smashing Sri Lankan bowlers to all parts of the park. Perhaps, for the first time in the World Cup, it felt like Australia had found their mojo as Marsh attacked anything and everything delivered in his arc.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Though, just when it looked like Marsh would take the game away from the islanders, a superb throw from the deep by Karunaratne saw the right-hander miles off the crease as wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis calmly flicked the bails off.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With the pressure right back on, Labuschagne and Inglis got stuck in, played some quiet overs in between whilst latching onto anything loose.&nbsp;Labuschagne anchored the innings while Inglis displayed his effortless strokeplay, reaching his maiden World Cup half-century in the process.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the end, it was the pair of Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis that completed the formalities and secured first points for Australia.&nbsp;</p>

Desperate for a win in the World Cup campaign, Australia finally struck gold at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Monday (Oct 16) evening, beating Sri Lanka by five wickets. Chasing a modest target of 211, Australia braved initial jitters to comfortably get over the line, courtesy of responsible knocks from Mitchell Marsh (52), Marnus Labuschagne (40), and Josh Inglis (58), with Glenn Maxwell (31*) providing fireworks at the end. A total of 211 was always going to be a tricky target to defend and despite Sri Lanka's best efforts, the five-time World champions managed to find their way through. Opener David Warner was trapped in front of the stumps by Dilshan Madushanka with DRS showing the ball kissing the leg stump, leading to an exasperated response from the Australian batter. Steve Smith, the ever-reliable no. 3 for Australia did not last long either as he secured his first duck in World Cup history. Madushanka got another one to swing on middle and off as Smith played down the wrong line and got smacked straight on the back leg. With two quick wickets in the bag, Sri Lanka attempted to up the ante but Mitchell Marsh had other plans. The powerful dasher launched a counter-attack campaign and started smashing Sri Lankan bowlers to all parts of the park. Perhaps, for the first time in the World Cup, it felt like Australia had found their mojo as Marsh attacked anything and everything delivered in his arc. Though, just when it looked like Marsh would take the game away from the islanders, a superb throw from the deep by Karunaratne saw the right-hander miles off the crease as wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis calmly flicked the bails off. With the pressure right back on, Labuschagne and Inglis got stuck in, played some quiet overs in between whilst latching onto anything loose. Labuschagne anchored the innings while Inglis displayed his effortless strokeplay, reaching his maiden World Cup half-century in the process. In the end, it was the pair of Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis that completed the formalities and secured first points for Australia. Leaders from Indigenous communities in Australian on Sunday (Oct 15) called for a week of silence and reflection after decisive rejection of referendum to recognise First Peoples in the country's constitution. The referendum asked Australians whether constitution should be altered in order to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait people with an advisory body "Voice to Parliament", that would have advised parliament on matters concerning the community. More than 60 per cent of the Australians voted "No" in the landmark referendum on Saturday. In order for the referendum to pass, it needed a national majority and majorities in at least four states. All six states in Australia rejected the proposal. Australia: Indigenous leaders call for reflection after failed referendum

A plan to include recognition of Aboriginal people in the nation's constitution and create a body to counsel parliament on Indigenous matters was soundly rejected by the Australian public.

ODI World Cup 2023: 'They're hoping rather than..,' says Matthew Hayden after Australia's loss vs South Africa

<p>Australians are set to vote in a historic referendum on Sunday (Oct 14) which could see a change in the country’s constitution for the first time in nearly five decades…or not, and here’s why.&nbsp;Back in March, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s government proposed enshrining a ‘Voice to Parliament’ in the country’s constitution, to recognise the country’s Indigenous people.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, one of the recent and final opinion polls conducted ahead of the vote showed that Australians are set to overwhelmingly say ‘No’ to the change as debate&nbsp;about the proposal rages on across the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, constitutional referendums are difficult to pass in Australia. So far, the country has approved only eight out of the 44 referendums since independence in 1901. The current referendum asks voters to give only a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ response to the proposed change.</p>

<p>The question on the ballot paper will be:</p>

<p><em>“A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.</em></p>

<p><em>Do you approve this proposed alteration?”</em></p>

<h2><strong>What is the ‘Voice to Parliament’?</strong></h2>

<p>The establishment of the ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice’, simply known as the ‘Voice to Parliament’, was proposed by First Nations Australians following a lengthy and widespread consultation process to find the best way to achieve constitutional recognition of Indigenous people in Australia.</p>

<p>The Voice was recommended by a historic document in 2017 called the Uluru Statement from the Heart, which would recognise Indigenous people in the Australian constitution by creating a body to advise parliament.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The proposal drafted by more than 250 Indigenous leaders in 2017 would lead to the creation of an independent and permanent advisory body, the members of which would be made up of and chosen by First Nations people from communities across Australia.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Indigenous Australians make up about 3.8 per cent of the total 26 million population. They have inhabited the land for about 60,000 years but have not been mentioned in the country’s 122-year-old constitution.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Not to mention, they also perform&nbsp;below national averages on most socio-economic measures and face disadvantages including discrimination, poor health and education outcomes and high incarceration rates.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
While the Australian constitution allows the government to make laws for Indigenous people, the Voice would be a way for them to be consulted on those laws.</p>

<p>The Voice would give advice to the Australian parliament and government on issues which affect the lives of the country’s Indigenous population on issues such as education, health, housing, justice and other policies in the hope that it would lead to better outcomes for the community.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the government would not be under any obligation to act on the advice.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Australian government says the design of the Voice will be guided by the principles which include – providing independent advice to parliament and government; chosen by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people based on the wishes of the local communities; it will be gender-balanced and including youth; will be empowering, community-led, inclusive, respect, and culturally informed; accountable and transparent; work alongside existing organisations and traditional structures.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Voice will not have a programme delivery function or a veto power.</p>

<h2><strong>Arguments in favour of the proposal</strong></h2>

<p>In the Uluru Statement, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people say that they feel a “powerlessness” when tackling structural issues to improve their lives.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In addition to the previously mentioned issues that Indigenous Australians face, their life expectancy is about eight years lower than non-Indigenous people.</p>

<p>They argue that this is because of a failure to properly consult them about the solutions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Non-Indigenous people are making decisions about communities which “they have never visited and people they do not know,” Professor Megan Davis, an Uluru Statement signatory, wrote in an opinion piece last year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Indigenous Australians say that not only will the government be able to make better decisions to help the community but also save money.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>The opposition</strong></h2>

<p>While Albanese’s centre-left Labor government has backed the change, most of the opposition Liberal-National conservatives have urged Australians to vote “No” and argued that it will divide the country by race.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The opposition parties also have argued it would not provide practical outcomes for Indigenous people and that regional and local committees in their communities could be more effective than a national body.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Some argue that Indigenous people are already represented fairly in the parliament with 11 Indigenous lawmakers which represent 4.8 per cent of the chamber.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, not all Indigenous people are in favour. Those against it argue that it is a distraction from achieving practical and positive outcomes and would not fully resolve the issues affecting them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, the country needs to prioritise the creation of a treaty with Indigenous people which would be a negotiated and legally binding agreement, as per BBC.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Latest opinion poll</strong></h2>

<p>The referendum requires a majority of Australians to vote “Yes” in order for the Voice to become a reality as well as a majority support in at least four of the six Australian states.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So far, more than four million people have already cast their ballot after early voting began on October 2 and with less than two days to go, a final poll by YouGov published on Thursday (Oct 12).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The poll shows 56 per cent oppose the proposal while 38 per cent support it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The YouGov polled 1,519 voters for the survey out of which six per cent were undecided. “Our final poll indicates a sweeping ‘No’ victory – with nearing six in 10 voters intending to cast a ‘No’ vote,” said Amir Daftari, YouGov Director of Polling and Academic research.</p>

<p>The poll also found that young people are more likely to vote ‘Yes’ while older voters overwhelmingly favour ‘No’.&nbsp;</p>

Australians are set to vote in a historic referendum on Sunday (Oct 14) which could see a change in the country’s constitution for the first time in nearly five decades…or not, and here’s why.

Australians are set to vote in a historic referendum on Sunday (Oct 14) which could see a change in the country’s constitution for the first time in nearly five decades…or not, and here’s why. Back in March, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s government proposed enshrining a ‘Voice to Parliament’ in the country’s constitution, to recognise the country’s Indigenous people. However, one of the recent and final opinion polls conducted ahead of the vote showed that Australians are set to overwhelmingly say ‘No’ to the change as debate about the proposal rages on across the country. Notably, constitutional referendums are difficult to pass in Australia. So far, the country has approved only eight out of the 44 referendums since independence in 1901. The current referendum asks voters to give only a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ response to the proposed change. The question on the ballot paper will be: “A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?” What is the ‘Voice to Parliament’? The establishment of the ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice’, simply known as the ‘Voice to Parliament’, was proposed by First Nations Australians following a lengthy and widespread consultation process to find the best way to achieve constitutional recognition of Indigenous people in Australia. The Voice was recommended by a historic document in 2017 called the Uluru Statement from the Heart, which would recognise Indigenous people in the Australian constitution by creating a body to advise parliament. The proposal drafted by more than 250 Indigenous leaders in 2017 would lead to the creation of an independent and permanent advisory body, the members of which would be made up of and chosen by First Nations people from communities across Australia. Indigenous Australians make up about 3.8 per cent of the total 26 million population. They have inhabited the land for about 60,000 years but have not been mentioned in the country’s 122-year-old constitution. Not to mention, they also perform below national averages on most socio-economic measures and face disadvantages including discrimination, poor health and education outcomes and high incarceration rates. While the Australian constitution allows the government to make laws for Indigenous people, the Voice would be a way for them to be consulted on those laws. The Voice would give advice to the Australian parliament and government on issues which affect the lives of the country’s Indigenous population on issues such as education, health, housing, justice and other policies in the hope that it would lead to better outcomes for the community. However, the government would not be under any obligation to act on the advice. The Australian government says the design of the Voice will be guided by the principles which include – providing independent advice to parliament and government; chosen by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people based on the wishes of the local communities; it will be gender-balanced and including youth; will be empowering, community-led, inclusive, respect, and culturally informed; accountable and transparent; work alongside existing organisations and traditional structures. The Voice will not have a programme delivery function or a veto power. Arguments in favour of the proposal In the Uluru Statement, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people say that they feel a “powerlessness” when tackling structural issues to improve their lives. In addition to the previously mentioned issues that Indigenous Australians face, their life expectancy is about eight years lower than non-Indigenous people. They argue that this is because of a failure to properly consult them about the solutions. Non-Indigenous people are making decisions about communities which “they have never visited and people they do not know,” Professor Megan Davis, an Uluru Statement signatory, wrote in an opinion piece last year. Indigenous Australians say that not only will the government be able to make better decisions to help the community but also save money. The opposition While Albanese’s centre-left Labor government has backed the change, most of the opposition Liberal-National conservatives have urged Australians to vote “No” and argued that it will divide the country by race. The opposition parties also have argued it would not provide practical outcomes for Indigenous people and that regional and local committees in their communities could be more effective than a national body. Some argue that Indigenous people are already represented fairly in the parliament with 11 Indigenous lawmakers which represent 4.8 per cent of the chamber. Notably, not all Indigenous people are in favour. Those against it argue that it is a distraction from achieving practical and positive outcomes and would not fully resolve the issues affecting them. Additionally, the country needs to prioritise the creation of a treaty with Indigenous people which would be a negotiated and legally binding agreement, as per BBC. Latest opinion poll The referendum requires a majority of Australians to vote “Yes” in order for the Voice to become a reality as well as a majority support in at least four of the six Australian states. So far, more than four million people have already cast their ballot after early voting began on October 2 and with less than two days to go, a final poll by YouGov published on Thursday (Oct 12). The poll shows 56 per cent oppose the proposal while 38 per cent support it. The YouGov polled 1,519 voters for the survey out of which six per cent were undecided. “Our final poll indicates a sweeping ‘No’ victory – with nearing six in 10 voters intending to cast a ‘No’ vote,” said Amir Daftari, YouGov Director of Polling and Academic research. The poll also found that young people are more likely to vote ‘Yes’ while older voters overwhelmingly favour ‘No’. Explained | What is Australia’s historic Indigenous Voice to parliament proposal? Why it might get rejected?

<p>South Africa had a brilliant start to their ODI World Cup 2023 campaign, having won their first two matches in the tournament. Their second win came against Australia in Lucknow on October 12 as they beat the Aussies by 134 runs. Protea bowler Kagiso Rabada was the wreaker-in-chief, taking 3/33 in his eight overs.</p>

<p>Among the three dismissals by Rabada, the ball he bowled to Josh Inglis was the best one as the batter was left dumbfounded on an unplayable delivery that rattled his&nbsp;stumps. Australia were three down already when Rabada came on to bowl the 12th over of the Kangaroo chase and delivered a peach first up to leave Inglis flummoxed. The batter tried to defend the ball with a straight bat but the ball whizzed past and hit the stumps. Have a look at the video below:</p>
