Australia's cyber safety regulator on Wednesday decided to drop a legal challenge against Elon Musk-owned X over the removal of videos of the stabbing of an Assyrian church bishop in Sydney, after a setback last month in the federal court.

Judge Geoffrey Kennett in May rejected a bid by the eSafety commissioner to extend a temporary order for the social media platform to block videos of the knife attack, which Australian authorities had called a terrorist attack.

Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said in a statement that the regulator had decided to drop its legal action against X.

"Most Australians accept this kind of graphic material should not be on broadcast television, which begs an obvious question of why it should be allowed to be distributed freely and accessible online 24/7 to anyone, including children," Grant said.

She said a major concern was the ease by which children were able to access the violent content on X.

Grant said she originally issued X the notice to remove the video in order to prevent the "extremely violent footage from going viral", potentially inciting further violence and inflicting more harm on the community.

"I stand by my investigators and the decisions eSafety made," she said.

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with a terrorism offence for the alleged attack in April.

The legal tussle had sparked heated exchanges between Musk and senior Australian officials including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who called Musk "an arrogant billionaire" for his objections to take down the video. Musk has posted memes criticising the regulatory order, describing it as censorship.

Other major platforms such as Meta, TikTok, Reddit and Telegram, took down the video when asked.

X had blocked Australian users from viewing the posts but refused to remove them globally on the grounds that one country's rules should not control the internet.

But the regulator argued that geo-blocking Australians, the solution X offered, was ineffective because several users used virtual private networks that disguised their locations.

Australia's High Commissioner to India, Philip Green OAM has described India as an "indispensable partner" and "top-tier security partner" as ties between the two countries grow. "Our relations are close in a way that may never have been. In fact, India is now our indispensable partner in the balancing effort in the Indo-Pacific," Green stated.

Speaking at Ananta Centre, High Commissioner Green emphasised the significance of India as an indispensable partner in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly through collaborative efforts in the Quad grouping and maritime domain awareness in the Northeast Indian Ocean.

The high commissioner underscored India's pivotal role in Australia's supply chain resilience strategy. Highlighting India's capabilities in producing electric vehicles and solar panels at scale, he noted, "India is a key part of our diversification agenda and supply chain resilience." This collaboration is particularly crucial as both countries aim to deal with supply chain disruptions and promote sustainable energy solutions.

The High Commissioner lauded the rapid growth in India-Australia relations over the past five years, describing it as the "fastest build-up of one of our big relations in history." This remarkable progress has positioned India as a "top-tier security partner" for Australia, with joint efforts extending into areas such as solar energy.

Green pointed out India's ambitious goal of installing solar panels on 10 million rooftops within the next three years and expressed Australia's commitment to collaborate closely in this sector. "Australia is the country with the largest proportion of households with solar on the roof in the world. This is an area where I want to see close collaboration," he added.

Addressing recent concerns regarding attacks on Hindu temples in Australia, Green reassured that Australia remains committed to maintaining harmonious relations among its diverse population.

Australian body urges swift trade pact with India, boost in two-way investment

The Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Australia-India Relations, Tim Thomas, has urged for the swift conclusion of a comprehensive economic cooperation agreement between India and Australia. During an exclusive interview with WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Thomas emphasised the need for accelerated bilateral trade growth and diversification.

"We would like to see more growth in bilateral trade, but also a more diversified trade. I think it's still very concentrated on certain goods and services," Thomas stated.

The Centre for Australia-India Relations, a national platform established by the Australian Government in 2023, aims to enhance collaboration and engagement with India. It operates across various sectors, including government, industry, academia, and civil society, to foster a deeper understanding of the opportunities arising from the Australia-India relationship. The Centre was officially inaugurated in Sydney in 2024, underscoring Australia's dedication to bolstering its ties with India.

The call for an early conclusion of the trade pact comes in the wake of the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), which took effect in December 2022. This agreement eliminated tariffs on over 85 per cent of Australia's goods exports to India by value, with this figure expected to rise to 90 per cent over the next five years. Full interview:

WION: What is this centre all about? How does it further the relationship between the two countries?

Tim Thomas: The centre is a very bold and exciting addition to the architecture of the Australia, India relationship. Its fundamental reason for being is to support the transformation of the economic relationship between Australia and India, built on mutual understanding and deep People-to-People ties. It is a unique investment amongst India's economic partners, for the Australian Government to uplift the relationship between Australia and India.

WION: So, its primary focus is investment and, of course, the people-to-people relationship?

Tim Thomas: I would say so, I would describe the economic relationship as well as the bilateral trade to investment. I would say there's great opportunities for more joint ventures and innovative collaboration between Australian and Indian companies. And I would say at the top of the pyramid is knowledge partnerships, that is what we would like to see because that will underpin the long-term nature of relations.

WION: How do you see the relationship between the two countries, we have seen high-level engagements between the leadership of the two countries and we have seen strong people to be to connect as well. So how would you characterise this relationship?

Tim Thomas: I would say it is very strong at the government-to-government level, I think we've had incredible levels of ministerial engagement across all of our key portfolios. Of course, our Prime Ministers enjoy a fantastic relationship. We have a very, I would say, intimate strategic relationship, including foreign ministers and defence ministers get together on a regular basis. But I would say that is going very well. I would say the Indian diaspora and Australia play a key part of the people-to-people relationship, this great trusted familiarity in the relationship. What I would like to see more of is that relationships are transferred into more industry outcomes and more growth in economic relationships.

WION: What kinds of practical outcomes your centre is looking at in terms of furthering India's relationship?

Tim Thomas: So, if I break them into about four areas, if I may, the economic relationship. So bilateral trade today is growing at the back of the interim free trade agreement, but it should be much higher. So, we would like to see more growth in bilateral trade, but also a more diversified trade. I think it's still very concentrated on certain goods and services. I would say the other areas, of course, on the public understanding, what is the community's understanding of India to Australia and the Australian community's understanding of what's happening in India. So that's a second area where I think there's great opportunity for improvement. I think we can harness more of the networks and the expertise of our Indian diaspora, particularly what I call the successful leading lights of the diaspora. We want to see greater growth in the relationship. And fourth is a fantastic opportunity to expand our connections culturally with our creative industries and sports.

WION: Essentially, in the relationship, what do you foresee, in like the next one year and expectation from the new government

Tim Thomas: I think there has to be greater investment from key sectors and when I say key sectors, in fact, the Australian Government is doing an updated economic engagement effort through what is known as the future roadmap of economic engagement between Australia - India, that will prioritise some key sectors in tourism, in premium foods and wine, but I would say also in critical minerals, in energy transition, in renewables, advanced manufacturing and agriculture. So, I would like to see more two-way investments in the next year. I would say that has to start with building relationships, and building familiarity with each other's markets in those areas.

I would say the other area is, of course, we would love to see a comprehensive economic cooperation agreement concluded in the next, within the next 12 months. If that is possible, because we think that will facilitate greater investment led economic engagement and expand our relationship in critical minerals and in education.

New Caledonia unrest: Australia, New Zealand send evacuation flights, Macron holds security meet

French President Emmanuel Macron will visit the riot-hit New Caledonia, said Paris on Tuesday (May 21) as Australia and New Zealand began evacuating nationals in the French territory which has experienced a week of deadly riots.

‘As soon as this evening’

Macron “will leave as soon as this evening,” said government spokeswoman Prisca Thevenot, in a bid to soothe tempers amid the riots which broke out against the planned electoral changes by the French government in Paris, which the Indigenous Kanaks have opposed.

The French government also announced that it would send hundreds more security personnel to join the 1,500 law enforcement personnel already on the ground amid the worst unrest that New Caledonia has seen in over three decades.

The High Commission of New Caledonia, which represents the French state in the territory, said that around 600 personnel would be deployed in the coming hours to join those already sent from France.

The violence broke out earlier this month over the French government’s plans to amend voting laws which would allow more recent arrivals to vote in provincial elections. Local leaders fear the change will dilute the Kanak vote, as per Reuters.

At least six people have been killed since the unrest began in the capital, Noumea. Three of the six people killed were young Kanaks shot by armed civilians.

The Royal Australian Air Force C130 Hercules was the first evacuation flight to leave French territory since the unrest began on May 13.

The high commission, on Tuesday, said that the airport remains closed for commercial flights, and it will deploy the military to protect public buildings.

Around 3,200 people are waiting to leave or enter New Caledonia as commercial flights were cancelled, reported Reuters citing the local government. This comes as the main international airport in the capital remains closed for commercial aircraft.

According to officials in Australia, around 300 citizens have registered for possible evacuation, but it was not immediately clear how many were evacuated on Tuesday’s flights.

The New Zealand Defence Force plane was expected to carry about “50 passengers with the most pressing needs,” said Foreign Minister Winston Peters, adding that they are working with France and Australia on “subsequent flights in coming days.”

French President Emmanuel Macron will visit the riot-hit New Caledonia, said Paris on Tuesday (May 21) as Australia and New Zealand began evacuating nationals in the French territory which has experienced a week of deadly riots. ‘As soon as this evening’ Macron “will leave as soon as this evening,” said government spokeswoman Prisca Thevenot, in a bid to soothe tempers amid the riots which broke out against the planned electoral changes by the French government in Paris, which the Indigenous Kanaks have opposed. WATCH | French President to visit New Caledonia The French government also announced that it would send hundreds more security personnel to join the 1,500 law enforcement personnel already on the ground amid the worst unrest that New Caledonia has seen in over three decades. First evacuation flight arrives in Australia A plane full of Australian tourists who had been stranded in New Caledonia amid a week of rioting and looting arrived in Brisbane late Tuesday, reported AFP. We continue to work on further flights,” Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in a post on social media announcing the two flights. According to officials in Australia, around 300 citizens have registered for possible evacuation, but it was not immediately clear how many were evacuated on Tuesday’s flights. The New Zealand Defence Force plane was expected to carry about “50 passengers with the most pressing needs,” said Foreign Minister Winston Peters, adding that they are working with France and Australia on “subsequent flights in coming days.” (With inputs from agencies)

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has seen an increase in his personal approval ratings and improved support for his government after a high-spending budget aimed at alleviating cost-of-living pressures was released.

This surge comes while concerns from economists about potential inflationary impacts linger.

A recent Newspoll survey obtained by Bloomberg News indicates that support for Albanese’s centre-left Labour government has risen to 52 per cent on a two-party preferred basis, compared to the opposition Liberal-National Coalition’s 48 per cent.

This is a slight improvement from the previous poll where Labour led by 51 per cent to 49 per cent.

Narrating her horrific ordeal in a Uber cab, a 26-year-old Australian woman from Adelaide spoke about how she was terrified when she found her driver was masturbating. The incident took place in October 2023 when she took a 20-minute Uber cab ride to go back to her home in Campbelltown during rush hours. Speaking to News.com.au, Tayla Pimlott said she had a harrowing experience and was forced to "holding back tears" as she feared being raped on what she had thought to be a "quick and quiet" journey. The incident took place in October 2023. Pimlott said, "Usually, when someone takes their pants down, they ruffle down a bit or something. I saw none of that, I just saw this subtle hand gesture. I could see clearly that he (the Uber driver) had his penis out, and he was masturbating." Also Read: Uber shares take a dip hurting second quarter forecast The woman said that she considered various options which included calling the police or trying to jump out of moving vehicle or screaming at the driver. Pimlott reached out to her mother and boyfriend and informed them about the incident. She also recorded the man masturbating to submit it as a police evidence. 'I could die, I could be raped', woman narrates her fears "There was a part of me that thought, 'Oh God, I could die, I could be raped, this man could touch me. My brain was frozen and my heart was pounding ... I was petrified," the woman told the outlet. When she was 10 minutes away from home, she messaged her mother, "I'm about 10 minutes away from home. I need you to (wait) outside for me. I'm in an Uber and this man has his penis out." Pimlott said that she felt it was best for her to pretend she did not see anything as she feared challenging the driver will land her in trouble. "He fully turned around and looked at me and in the most creepiest voice I've ever heard he goes, 'Thank you so much,'" the woman said. Watch: Florida abortion ban excludes victims of rape & incest | Reacting to the incident, Uber in a statement said, "What's been reported has no place in the Uber community or anywhere else. As soon as we were notified of this report, we removed the driver partner's access to the app immediately and permanently. "We continue to work to build cutting-edge technology and features to help improve safety for riders and driver-partners on the app, such as the Safety Toolkit, the emergency assistance button and the Share my Trip feature. Trips on the Uber platform are not anonymous and all trips are GPS tracked in real time." The incident was later reported by the woman and the police arrested 29-year-old Rahman Fazeli. Mining magnate Gina Rinehart has requested the National Gallery of Australia to take down her portrait from an exhibition by artist Vincent Namatjira. The portrait, which some may consider demeaning, is among many artworks put up at the Canberra gallery in Namatjira's first major exhibition. Despite Rinehart's request, the National Gallery has refused to remove the portrait, stating that it encourages public discourse regarding its collection and exhibitions.

“Since 1973, when the National Gallery acquired Jackson Pollock’s Blue Poles, there has been a dynamic discussion on the artistic merits of works in the national collection, and/or on display at the gallery,” it said.

“We present works of art to the Australian public to inspire people to explore, experience and learn about art,” the National Gallery added.

The portrait of Rinehart is displayed alongside portraits of Queen Elizabeth II and footballer Adam Goodes and is scheduled to remain on exhibit until July 21.

Before being showcased in Canberra, the painting was publicly displayed in Adelaide for several months during its initial exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia from October 2023 to January 2024.

The South Australian gallery has confirmed that no requests were made for the removal of the painting.

Additionally, a reproduction of the portrait is included in a prestigious Thames & Hudson monograph about Namatjira's work, published to coincide with the exhibition.

Rinehart is listed as a friend of the National Gallery for donating between $4,999 and $9,999 to the institution.

A small plane made a wheels-up emergency landing after several hours of circling above Newcastle Airport in New South Wales. The Beechcraft Super King airplane, operated by Eastern Air Services, had three people onboard, including the pilot, found its landing gear failed when it was just 10 minutes into the flight during its 112-mile journey to Port Macquarie in the north.

A video that is now going viral on social media shows the plane approaching the runway without an activated landing gear. As it touches down the runway, it skids along the tarmac until finally coming to a stop. Emergency response vehicles on standby then raced to the aid of the plane.

The authorities as well as the onlookers near the tarmac burst into applause as it safely landed.

Following reports that a Chinese fighter jet fired flares in the path of an Australian navy helicopter over international waters, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia criticised Beijing for 'completely unacceptable' conduct.

According to Australia's Department of Defence, late on Monday (May 6) evening, a Chinese Air Force J-10 jet dropped flares above and several hundred metres ahead of the MH60R Seahawk helicopter on Saturday while it was flying over the Yellow Sea as part of the UN's efforts to enforce sanctions on North Korea.

Following Australia's accusation, China said on Tuesday that its armed forces had taken action to warn and notify an Australian aircraft.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told Australia's Nine Network on Tuesday, "We've just made it very clear to China that this is unprofessional and that it's unacceptable."

Beijing's foreign ministry denied using the sonar and said no harm had occurred.

Albanese said that Chinese Premier Li Qiang is set to visit Australia next month. "We will make our position clear as well in discussions," he added.

According to Defence Minister Richard Marles, on Monday, the pilot had to "take evasive action in order to not be hit by those flares" since they were 300 metres (986 feet) in front of the helicopter and 60 metres (197 feet) above it.

The minister stated that the consequences of being hit by the flares would have been serious. In the event, no injuries or damage were reported. The minister stated that the consequences of being hit by the flares would have been serious. There were no reports of casualties or property damage.

Australian carrier Qantas Airways has reached a settlement in a lawsuit, agreeing to pay a penalty of A$100 million ($66 million) over allegations of illegally selling tickets for flights that were already cancelled, Reuters reports.

The airline disclosed on Monday that the settlement, subject to approval by the Federal Court of Australia, includes an additional A$20 million remediation program for affected passengers.

Under this program, impacted customers will receive compensation ranging from A$225 to A$450 each.

This resolution marks a step in addressing concerns raised by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) regarding Qantas' conduct.

ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb expressed satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting Qantas' acknowledgment of misleading its customers.

Cass-Gottlieb highlighted the importance of the proposed penalty, stating, "The size of this proposed penalty is an important milestone in enforcing the Australian Consumer Law."

The legal action against Qantas, initiated by the ACCC in August last year, alleged that the airline continued to advertise and sell flights even after their cancellation, prompting widespread customer dissatisfaction.

Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson acknowledged the airline's shortcomings, particularly in providing timely cancellation notifications, and expressed apologies to affected customers.

Responding to the settlement, Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson outlined measures taken to address the issues raised, including process upgrades and investments in new technology.

Hudson affirmed that the airline would take measure to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents in the future.

The financial implications of the remediation program and penalty will be reflected in Qantas' full-year financial results ending June 30, categorised as an expense outside the airline's key profit measure, underlying profit before tax.

However, the actual cash outflow is expected to occur in the subsequent financial year.

Australia is preparing for its upcoming budget, but the financial projections are far from the strong revenue upgrades witnessed in previous years, Bloomberg News reported.

Citing a combination of factors including a sluggish global economy, a softened labour market, and decreased commodity prices, the Treasurer's office forecasts an uptick in tax receipts, excluding GST, amounting to approximately A$25 billion over forward estimates.

This figure pales in comparison to the average upgrade of A$129 billion observed in the past three budgets, as reported by Bloomberg.

The subdued revenue outlook indicates ongoing challenges for Australia's economy, despite efforts by the centre-left Labour government to maintain fiscal discipline since assuming office in May 2022.

The Treasurer, Jim Chalmers, acknowledged the economic challenges, noting a pragmatic approach in light of the prevailing conditions.

"We are realistic about the challenges facing our economy and our budget. This includes not expecting the same sorts of massive revenue upgrades that we’ve seen in recent budget updates to continue," Bloomberg quoted Chalmers as saying.

The government's strategy appears focused on mitigating immediate concerns, particularly inflationary pressures.
