Meta, the parent firm of Facebook, will not rule out blocking news content in Australia should the government slap licensing fees. The regional policy director at Meta, Mia Garlick, gave testimony to this end at a parliamentary hearing on Friday.

Asked if Meta would block news content in the country, Garlick said "all options are on the table".

"There's a large number of channels that people can get news content from," Garlick told the inquiry.

She said Meta was waiting for Canberra to decide on applying an untested 2021 law that gives the government powers to compel US tech giants to pay fees to media outlets for links.

These comments are the clearest sign to date that it might take on a similar aggressive stance in Australia as it did last year in Canada at the tabling of such legislation.

Meta cut deals with Australian media companies including News Corp and the Australian Broadcasting Corp when the law was brought in Australia, but has since announced it won't renew these deals beyond 2024.

The Australian assistant treasurer has been left to decide whether to compel Meta FB to pay for news content. The assistant treasurer claimed that Meta seems to abide by the law only when it best serves the company.

Garlick explained that Meta might block news, as whatever it did would still be in compliance with the law. She added that Meta adheres to various laws, including tax, safety, and privacy laws, and therefore, the kind of compliance will differ in case this law is fully enacted.

"Every other law - tax laws, safety laws, privacy laws - we work to comply with," she said. "It's just compliance would look slightly different in relation to this law if it's fully enacted."

On the handling of misinformation and scams by Meta, Garlick said the content moderation centers cater to it from outside Australia, but there are reporting processes in place for Australians. She responded to concerns about scam ads-like those featuring Australian mining billionaire Andrew Forrest-by pointing out that detecting and stopping scams is very challenging, but Meta is indeed doing so.

How could Meta call itself an advertising business when "some ads sell lies", asked Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young.

"We have policies and systems and tools to do everything we can to prevent those ads," Garlick replied.

Australia's inflation accelerated to a six-month high in May. This has got markets predicting another interest rate hike this year, as a key measure of core prices also rose for the fourth consecutive month.

The Reserve Bank of Australia reiterated on Wednesday its commitment to running a restrictive monetary policy given the broader need to contain inflation. The RBA did not dismiss the possibility of further interest rate hikes in case need be, but acknowledged the financial strain that many households were going through.

In a speech on the banking industry in Melbourne, RBA Assistant Governor Christopher Kent highlighted that the present setting of interest rates at 4.35% is currently dampening the growth of demand and, as such, driving inflation lower. "We know that many are feeling a painful squeeze on their finances because of higher interest rates," said Kent. He emphasised that mortgage payment has already surged to a record 10% of household disposable income.

Kent also noted that current rates were far above all estimates of the neutral rate, which is the rate neither stimulating nor handicapping economic growth. The RBA has increased a record series of rates amounting to 425 basis points since May 2022, but has held steady for five straight meetings as the running inflation remained above its 2-3 per cent target band at 3.6%.

RBA Governor Michele Bullock said earlier this month that the restrictive policy had contributed to the bank's wariness about lifting rates higher at its June policy meeting. Financial markets are forecasting barely any chance of a rate cut before April next year, with just 43 basis points of easing expected by the end of 2025.

Kent reiterated that the central bank was standing back on any rate adjustments.

"While recent economic data have been mixed, they have reinforced the need to remain vigilant to upside risks to inflation," he reiterated.

"Hence, with regards to the path of interest rates, the Reserve Bank Board is not ruling anything in or out."

The chariness reflects the RBA's commitment to containing inflation, navigating the delicate balance between the growth of the economy and household financial stability. With world economic conditions highly uncertain in large part, the RBA is on high alert to keep the economy healthy from any possible shocks of upward inflationary pressures.

Yuvraj played under Warner's captaincy at SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) from 2016 to 2017. The duo lifted the IPL trophy in 2016 after beating Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the final.

As opponents, both squared off against each other numerous times but remained on cordial terms off the field.

After Australia's exit from the tournament, tributes poured in from all around the cricketing world for Warner. Legendary Australian captain, Ricky Ponting was one of the first ones to congratulate Warner on his career, adding that the country was yet to find an impact player like him.

"(I) put my arm around him. I said, 'just take a moment tonight to sit back by yourself and reflect on what's been an unbelievable career across all three formats for Australia'" said Ponting.

"We know he retired in the summer from test cricket, but you'll struggle to find a guy that's had as big an impact on all three forms in Australian cricket than David Warner has," he added.

Also read | 'You'll struggle...,' Ex-Australia skipper Ricky Ponting after David Warner's international career ends

Warner's wife, Candice Warner also posted a beautiful message saying it was a privilege to see him play up close. She also presented a fact-sheet about what her husband had achieved on the cricketing pitch.

"Congratulations @davidwarner31 on one of the best international cricket careers we have ever seen for our country. To have had a front-row seat has been a privilege. We will miss seeing you play for Australia but we are so excited to have you home more. Love you." Candice wrote on Instagram.

Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh penned a heartfelt note for David Warner as the Australian batter brought curtains on his 15-year-long international career. Yuvraj took to his social media handles to share the poignant note and pay tribute to what was a glittering career, filled with individual and team accolades for the Australian. Warner played his last match in Australian colours against India in the Super 8 stage at the ongoing T20 World Cup in the USA and Caribbean. He had already said goodbye to the Test and ODI format after playing the series against Pakistan, earlier this year. “No one likes a quiet goodbye, but that’s the game of life mate. Well done on an incredible career @davidwarner31!" Yuvraj wrote “From smashing boundaries on the park to nailing Bollywood moves and dialogues, you’ve done it all in true #Warner style. A feared batsman, a lively teammate and a true entertainer on and off the field," he added, sharing pictures of the duo when they shared the field. "It was a pleasure sharing the dressing room with you buddy. Go well #legend and enjoy your well-deserved time off with the lovely family." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Yuvraj Singh (@yuvisofficial) × Yuvraj played under Warner's captaincy at SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) from 2016 to 2017. Also read | 'You'll struggle...,' Ex-Australia skipper Ricky Ponting after David Warner's international career ends Warner's wife, Candice Warner also posted a beautiful message saying it was a privilege to see him play up close.
Australia men's T20 team captain Mitchell Marsh has reacted to Afghanistan all-rounder, Gulbadin Naib, feigning injury during the match against Bangladesh. Australia needed Bangladesh to defeat Afghanistan to qualify for the semifinals of the marquee tournament but the team led by Rashid Khan managed to outclass the Bangl Tigers.

The defeat meant that Australia had to return home having lost two matches in the Super 8 stage.

“I was almost in tears laughing and at the end of the day it had no bearing on the game,” Marsh was quoted as saying by cricket.com.

“So we can laugh about it now – but gee, it was funny. It was outstanding (from Gulbadin Naib)," he added.

Prior to Marsh, leg-spinner Adam Zampa had posted an Instagram story, calling Naib's hamstring injury as 'rainstring'.

What did Naib do?

The incident transpired in the 12th over of the match after Afghanistan head coach, Jonathan Trott, standing on the sidelines, instructed the team to slow down the play.

At the time, Bangladesh were two runs behind the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) score - meaning Afghanistan would have won the match if no play was possible from thereon.

With rain teeming down, Naib, standing at first slip, went down, clutching his hamstring, stopping the match in the process. As the rain's intensity increased, the players were taken off the pitch before returning to complete the match.

"The coach sends a message out to say Slow it down, slow it down, and the first slip just dives on the ground needlessly. That is unacceptable. Gone off anyway. I get that might have gone off anyway for the rain," commentator Simon Doull said on air dissecting the incident.

Quizzed after the match about Gulbadin's faux-injury, captain Rashid Khan said he didn't know what happened to his player.

"Well, I think he had some cramp. I don't know what happened to him. I don't know what's going on, on social media. But, that doesn't matter. It's just an on-field injury. We didn't lose any overs, rain came, and we just went off (the field)," said Rashid.

"It's not something that made any massive difference in the game. We came back on to the field in 5 minutes, and there was no massive difference. For me, it was just an injury and needed some time," he added.

T20 World Cup: 'I was almost...' - Australia captain Mitchell Marsh reacts to Gulbadin Naib's fake injury

Rohit Sharma was at his sizzling best as he tormented Australian bowlers in the final match of the Super 8 stage to put India in the driver's seat. Rohit smashed eight sixes and seven boundaries en route his 92-run innings off 41 deliveries.

Every Australian bowler, bar Josh Hazlewood was hit to all parts of the park. Australia's premier strike bowler, Mitchell Starc faced the ultimate wrath of Rohit who smashed him for 29 runs in one over.

During the innings, Rohit shattered Yuvraj Singh's record for the most sixes in an innings of a T20 World Cup match. Hitman also broke the record for the fastest fifty by a captain in T20 World Cup history, previously held by ex-Bangladesh skipper Mohammad Ashraful.

Suryakumar Yadav, who batted briefly with Rohit in the middle, said it 'felt like a dream' watching the right dasher in full flow.

"Felt like a dream (watching Rohit Sharma bat), he batted beautifully. We sat together and talked about it before the game and he (Rohit) showed us the way," said Suryakumar.

Australia plans to enforce significant fines on major supermarket chains that violate an industry code of conduct, as the federal government addresses concerns regarding unfair pricing practices affecting suppliers.

Grocery retailers with annual revenues surpassing $3.3 billion, such as Woolworths, Coles, ALDI, and wholesaler Metcash, are now required to obey the code, which was previously voluntary.

The regulatory change comes after a report by former competition minister Craig Emerson, which found that the current code was not effective in addressing the unequal power dynamic between supermarkets and their suppliers, especially farmers.

Under the new rules, supermarkets could be fined up to 10% of their yearly revenue for breaking the code, which mainly governs their interactions with suppliers.

For instance, Woolworths reported $32 billion in food sales in 2023, Coles reported $24.6 billion, Metcash reported $6.6 billion, and ALDI did not disclose its earnings.

"This is all about ensuring fair treatment for families and farmers," said Treasurer Jim Chalmers, Agriculture Minister Murray Watt, and Competition Minister Andrew Leigh in a joint statement. The government intends to give priority to passing legislation to make the code compulsory.

Australia's supermarket sector is highly concentrated, with Woolworths and Coles comprising two-thirds of the country's grocery sales. This announcement is part of six government inquiries into the industry.

Representatives from Woolworths and Coles stated that they would review the report's recommendations and the government's response, and point out their commitment to supporting a sustainable grocery sector.

As mentioned in the report, one account said that X paid out the share entitlements at a conversion rate 2.5 times the value of the shares. (With inputs from agencies)

Paleontologists have discovered a new species of pterosaur after analysing 100-million-year-old fossilised bones uncovered in western Queensland, Australia. The fossilised remains belonged to a flying reptile and it lived among the dinosaurs.

The latest study, titled, "Haliskia peterseni, a new anhanguerian pterosaur from the late Early Cretaceous of Australia", has been published in Scientific Reports.

The study, led by Curtin University, is based on fossilised remains which were unearthed in 2021 by Kevin Petersen, a curator at the Kronosaurus Korner Museum in Richmond, Australia. The remains belong to Haliskia peterseni, which is a new genus and species of anhanguerian pterosaur.

Australian scientists were stunned after they spotted a giant tiger shark spitting out a spiky land-loving echidna off the country's northeast coast. Researchers from James Cook University revealed Thursday (Jun 6) that they spotted a shark regurgitating the spiny, hedgehog-like creature back in May 2022. The shark didn't like its dinner and according to the experts, it must have swallowed the spiky organism while swimming in shallows or while travelling between islands.

"We were quite shocked at what we saw. We really didn't know what was going on," said Nicolas Lubitz Thursday. "When it spat it out, I looked at it and remarked 'What the hell is that?'"

2021 champions Australia kickstarted their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a 39-run win over Oman at the Kensington Oval, Barbados on Wednesday (June 5). While the margin reflects a straightforward win for Mitchell Marsh & Co., the Men in Yellow had some tough moments to overcome to beat the lowly-ranked side. Australia rode on Marcus Stoinis' 36-ball 67*, and 3 for 19, and David Warner's 51-ball 56 to post 164-5 and defended it by restricting Oman for 125/9.

Talking about the contest, Oman opted to bowl first and had Australia struggling at 37 for 1 in the powerplays. Travis Head fell early and Warner-Marsh couldn't find the boundaries at ease on a sluggish pitch coupled with some disciplined bowling from Oman. In the middle-overs, Marsh and Glenn Maxwell, whose poor run of form continues from IPL 2024, departed soon and Warner was joined by Stoinis. The duo took their time, with Warner playing the anchor role, but Stoinis got a reprieve and made the most of it from thereon.

Stoinis' 36-ball 67 was laced with 2 fours and 6 sixes as 58 came off the death overs to take his side to an above-par total. Meanwhile, Warner also surpassed Australia's T20 WC-winning captain Aaron Finch to become the country's highest run-getter in the format.

Oman bowlers lost the plot in the end overs, dishing out full-tosses at Stoinis, after a fine start. Mehran Khan was the most-successful bowler with 2 for 38. The medium pacer was also on a hat-trick at one point.

In the run chase, Oman were never in it with Mitchell Starc, who had an injury scare but later confirmed it was just cramps, set the tone for the one-time winners. Nathan Ellis and Stoinis chipped in as well, as Oman were reeling at 29 for 3, further reduced to 56 for 5. While Ayaan and Mehran Khan played decently, they started the counterattack too late and had much to do. As a result, they managed 125 for 9 in 20 overs.

At the post-match presentation, Player-of-the-Match Stoinis said, "Nice start, we got the win and boys spent some time in the middle and everyone got to bowl. It seemed like swing wasn't available, and I was trying to get some bounce with cross-seam deliveries."
