A spectator at Australia's showpiece Boxing Day Test against India has tested positive for coronavirus, authorities said Wednesday, warning fans seated nearby that they must get tested and isolate.&nbsp;

State health authorities said the man in his thirties was not infectious while at the famed Melbourne Cricket Ground on the second day of play "but there is potential he acquired the virus while there" or at a nearby shopping centre.&nbsp;

"The MCG is being investigated as a potential source for the infection," Victoria's Department of Health said.

"We're encouraging anyone who was in The Great Southern Stand, zone 5 of the MCG between 12.30pm and 3.30pm on 27 December, to get tested and isolate until they receive a negative result."&nbsp;

The Boxing Day Test is a centrepiece of Australia's sporting calendar and just under 30,000 people attended this year, well short of capacity. &nbsp;

Despite having been largely free of Covid-19, Australia is currently battling to bring a cluster of cases under control and hoping aggressive testing and contact tracing can help avoid full-scale lockdowns.&nbsp;

The news comes on the eve of the third Test between Australia and India, which has caused some controversy by being played in Sydney, the epicentre of a recent outbreak.

The number of spectators has been restricted to 25 percent of seating capacity in order to make sure it does not become a mass spreading event.&nbsp;

Authorities in New South Wales said the revelation from Melbourne was "obviously influencing our thinking" about how the Sydney Test would proceed, without elaborating.

India's tour Down Under has been beset with Covid-19 related problems.&nbsp;

Five players were criticised for seemingly breaching the team's biosecurity bubble by going out to a restaurant.&nbsp;

And there are still questions about whether the two teams will have to quarantine before the final Test in Brisbane next week.&nbsp;

“The theatre around it sounds great. He has started the Sheffield Shield season in fine form, he’s played really well tonight but he’s 37 years of age. You’ve got to move on. Everyone wants him to play again for Australia because he is such a good person but I think we’ve got to look at someone else.”

Australian vice-captain Pat Cummins announced the move on Monday as he said the decision came after talks within the team.

Veteran Australian spinner Nathan Lyon feels Virat Kohli’s absence in the last three Tests of the upcoming four-match Test series against India won’t make Australia favourites to lift the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as he said that India boast a lot of ‘superstars’ in the team.

Indian skipper Kohli will head back to India following the opening Test in Adelaide after being granted paternity leave by the BCCI to be with his wife and Bollywood superstar Anushka Sharma for the birth of their first child in early January.

While expressing his disappointment over getting limited opportunities to get a crack at Kohli, considered to be one of the finest batsmen in the world.&nbsp;

"It's disappointing for the series. You want to play against the best players in the world. I believe he is the best player in the world along with Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. It's disappointing but they have still got superstars.

India’s tour of Australia, comprising of three ODIs, as many T20Is and four Test matches, begins on November 27. The much-awaited four-match Test series starts on December 17 with a day-night match in Adelaide.

"Rohit is still 70 per cent [fit]," Ganguly said in an interview with The Week when asked about Rohit. "Why don't you find out from Rohit himself? That is why he is still not picked for the ODIs and T20s down under. He has been added to the Test squad." 
Rohit had suffered a hamstring tear in his left leg on October 18 and went on to miss Mumbai Indians’ next four matches. However, he came back in the last three and helped the Mumbai outfit lift their fifth IPL trophy.

Another player, who is injured is Wriddhiman Saha. The gloveman picked up hamstring injuries on both his legs. Ganguly has said that the BCCI, Indian physios and the players know about the injury status and that is enough for the board while adding that Wriddhiman will be fit for the Test series against Australia.

The Indian cricket team on Thursday arrived in Sydney for a gruelling two-month Australia tour that starts with a 14-day quarantine-cum –training phase. Virat Kohli-led Team India along with Australian superstars such as David Warner, Steve Smith, Pat Cummins among others arrived late in the afternoon and were taken to the Sydney Olympic Park.

The New South Wales government has allowed the Indian team to train during the two-week quarantine phase and their session will be conducted at the Blacktown International Sports Park.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli is set to return home after the first Test in Adelaide for the birth of his first child. He is also set to get special treatment during the quarantine period, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph.

The base for rugby side New South Wales Blues – the Pullman Hotel – will be the base for the Men in Blue.

Team India lands in Sydney, Virat Kohli to get rugby legend's suite during quarantine

Cricket Australia (CA) is hoping crowd limits at stadiums can be relaxed for India’s blockbuster tour as COVID-19 restrictions ease across the country.

Australia has for weeks recorded just daily single digit new cases, with an outbreak in southern Victoria state quashed by a four-month lockdown.

Caps on stadium crowds remain, however, which could cost CA tens of millions of dollars in revenue.

Victoria is limiting crowds at the 100,000-seat Melbourne Cricket Ground to 25,000 per day during the Dec. 26 Boxing Day test, the second of the four-match series against India.

Test venues Adelaide Oval and the Sydney Cricket Ground are limited to about half-capacity, while Brisbane’s Gabba is capped at about 70%.

“We’re going to give all priority to safety but we’ll continue to work with the authorities to see if we can’t increase those capacities a bit as we move forward,” CA interim Chief Executive Nick Hockley told Australian radio station SEN on Tuesday.

CA last month reported a A$46 million deficit ($33.48 million) for the year to June 30, and projected a A$120 million dip in projected revenue for the 2020/21 period due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

India’s tour, which kicks off with a one-day international series starting in Sydney on Nov. 27, will provide a vital injection of revenue for CA despite the limited involvement of one of the biggest drawcards in Virat Kohli.

The India skipper will miss the last three tests to return home for the birth of his child.

“I think when the pregnancy was announced it was always on the cards and we have to respect the fact he wants to be there for the birth of his first child,” said Hockley.

“We’ve been really clear with Cricket Australia and the MCG that we’ll make final decisions about numbers closer to the day, depending on the epidemiological situation that abides at the time,” he said.

The carnival attracts crowds to the tune of 90,000 on major races and is crowed by the A$8 million ($5.7 million) Melbourne Cup, which is run on the first Tuesday in November at Flemington and known as “the race that stops the nation”.

“The view the government came to was it wasn’t appropriate in the circumstances to have hundreds of owners congregating at Flemington next week,” said Pakula.

“To be honest, I’ve never faced a bowler who is so accurate at bowling bouncers.”

Though Wagner made his mark with 17 wickets, including multiple dismissals of Australia’s best batsmen Steve Smith, David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne, Tim Paine’s side dominated the Black Caps to claim the test series 3-0.

India were more successful in the previous summer, becoming the first Asian team to win a test series in Australia with a 2-1 result.

Australia were without Smith and Warner for that series, who were serving suspensions for ball-tampering.

However, India’s pace attack of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma bowled superbly throughout the series and humbled the hosts’ vaunted trio of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood on their own pitches.

Wade said Wagner’s angles and accuracy would nonetheless be hard for India’s quicks to reproduce.

“He’s always between your shoulder and the top of your (helmet) peak, or in your armpits,” said Wade.

“They barely had anyone in front of the wicket. They had really cagey fields, catchers in good places, they were trying to take wickets all the time, it wasn’t negative bowling.

“Hats off to him, he bowled unbelievably well.”

However, the powerhouse Australian duo -- David Warner and Steve Smith -- were missing in action because of a year-long ban for the ball-tampering scandal. Australia and India are slated to take on each other in a four-match Test series this year, beginning from December 4 in Brisbane.

In a telephonic interview with ANI, the 26-year-old from Queensland opened up about the upcoming India-Australia series, the new ICC guidelines, and his bond with teammate Steve Smith.Labuschagne said that India probably has one of the "best bowling attacks in the world" at the moment, however, with the likes of Smith and Warner back in the team, Australia would be in a much more stable position.

"I cannot wait for the series against India. The series will be between the number one and number two ranked sides in the World Test Championship. Having Steve Smith and David Warner is a massive win for us, one batsman averages in the 60s while the second one averages in the high forties. That will add massive balance to our side," the right-handed-batsman spoke to ANI in a telephonic interview.

"I also think that we are playing better cricket now, our batting lineup is more stable now, guys understand their role, it would be a great challenge facing India`s bowling attack. India has one of the best bowling attacks in the world, if not the best," added the batsman.

When asked who would be the most challenging Indian bowler to bat against, Labuschagne replied, "Jasprit Bumrah with the extra pace adds a bit of value to the Indian attack, he can swing the ball both ways, he is right up there in the rankings. It would be exciting to see two great pace attacks take on each other. We would be required to be at our best to defeat India."The second Test of the series, scheduled for later this year, at Adelaide would be a day-night Test.

When quizzed about whether Australia would have an advantage over their guests, Labuschagne believes otherwise. "I don`t think Australia would have a clear advantage in the day-night Test, we have played more pink-ball Tests. The way the game is right now, people are used to adapting so I really don`t think we would have an outright advantage," he said.

The 26-year-old made his Test debut in 2018, but he couldn`t register his presence right away. However, he made a comeback in the national squad in the second Ashes Test at Lord`s in 2019. Interestingly, he was called in as a concussion substitute for Smith.

"Steve and I are great mates and, I have learnt a lot from him. We talk quite a bit about batting. Just by watching him play and go about his work, I have managed to pick up a few things," Labuschagne added.

The right-handed batsman registered 1,104 runs at an impressive average of 64.94 in 2019. The stellar run continued to the succeeding year, 2020, when he played an innings of 215, his highest Test score, against New Zealand in Sydney. However, that was only Test match the Aussie could play as the world sports, along with cricket, had come to a halt due to the global pandemic.

The young batsman has made the world sit up and notice his talent in Tests and One Day Internationals, although, he longs to explore the shortest format of the game. Due to the pandemic, Indian Premier League (IPL), one of the most popular T20 cricket leagues, has also been postponed indefinitely due to the contagious virus.

"IPL is the best T20 competition in the world, and if there is an opportunity to play in the IPL, I would definitely want to go over there and challenge myself against the best players in the world," the Aussie said.

However, his sole focus is to play for his country as and when needed. He is currently ranked at the number three position in the ICC Test batsmen rankings, only behind Steve Smith and Virat Kohli.The country has somewhat managed to curb the coronavirus, and Labuschagne said that players in Queensland have also returned to full-fledged training with their state sides.

"Lockdown has been good. It has been a good opportunity to work on different parts of your game. It has also been a good opportunity to work on the fitness aspect as well. We have fully resumed our training in Queensland. I did not take much of a break as I really enjoy batting, I was playing a bit of cricket in the backyard so there is not much rustiness," he added.

Australia had last played an international match in March against New Zealand, however, after the first ODI, the remaining two matches were postponed due to the pandemic.But many parts of the world are recovering from the havoc created by the virus, and hence several world sports are returning back on the field.

In the first cricketing encounter since the pandemic arrived, West Indies and England on July 8 kicked off the Test series in Southampton. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has made some modifications in the sport, regarding the use of saliva in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking about the same, Labuschagne said, "I really enjoyed watching the first Test between England and West Indies. I am a big fan of watching cricket, it was a great test between bat and ball, it seemed as if the ball did not swing as much over there, bowlers were not able to shine the ball with saliva so I am unsure whether that had an effect of it."The Aussie admits that it would be "tough" to maintain the ball with no saliva policy in different conditions.

"I definitely think not using saliva will have an effect, it is tough to maintain the ball with just sweat in tougher conditions. There needs to be a fair contest between bat and ball, there has to be something which can help shine the ball to maintain an even contest between bat and ball, I am not saying use illegal substance but you can try out something which can help the ball stay in even condition," he added.

Earlier today, Cricket Australia announced a 26-member probable list if the series against England goes ahead. Both CA and ECB are currently working on a situation to go ahead with the limited-overs series in September this year.

I am a big fan of watching cricket, it was a great test between bat and ball, it seemed as if the ball did not swing as much over there, bowlers were not able to shine the ball with saliva so I am unsure whether that had an effect of it."The Aussie admits that it would be "tough" to maintain the ball with no saliva policy in different conditions. "I definitely think not using saliva will have an effect, it is tough to maintain the ball with just sweat in tougher conditions. There needs to be a fair contest between bat and ball, there has to be something which can help shine the ball to maintain an even contest between bat and ball, I am not saying use illegal substance but you can try out something which can help the ball stay in even condition," he added. Australia have dropped Test skipper Tim Paine from their one-day squad for next month's series against South Africa and named opening batsman Aaron Finch as captain in his place.

Finch, who led his country's Twenty20 side to an 11-run defeat to Pakistan in Dubai on Friday to go 2-0 down in the series, will be supported by twovice-captainss in Josh Hazlewood and Alex Carey, echoing the Test structure.

Carey replaces Tim Paine as wicketkeeper in&nbsp;the 14-man squad for the three-match series which begins in Perth on Nov. 4 and also includes matches in Adelaide and Hobart.

"We expect Aaron, Josh and Alex to lead the side through a big Australian summer ... they'll also be driving our standards and values as we prepare&nbsp;our defence of the World Cup, which is only seven months away," chief selector Trevor Hohns said in a news release.

"We believe the squad we have selected will give us a great opportunity to not only be competitive at home this summer, but it also allows us to start to build continuity leading into next year's tournament."
