After the Victorian government confirmed that all COVID-19 limitations would be waived, a full capacity crowd is expected for the Boxing Day Test between England and Australia.

After the state met its immunisation objectives, the decision was made. Cricket Australia said in June that tickets for the MCG would be sold to 85 percent of capacity, while all other venues will be sold to full capacity.

With the Victoria government loosening the requirements, more tickets may become available for the traditional Test match, which has drawn some of Australia's largest audiences in recent years.

Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews also stated that there will be no restrictions on how many people may enter the MCG on Boxing Day. "There are no more caps, there are no more quotients, no more rules in terms of how many people can be in different spaces," Andrews said, according to ESPNcricinfo.

Ashes: 100 per cent crowd capacity likely for Boxing Day Test

The Australian state of Tasmania will submit a pitch to the country's cricket board on Wednesday to have the fifth Ashes Test relocated to Hobart from Perth.

The Ashes finale is scheduled for January 14 at Perth Stadium but the fixture remains in doubt due to Western Australia (WA) state's strict COVID-19 policies.

Tasmania Premier Peter Gutwein said he would push for the match to be played at Hobart's picturesque Bellerive Oval, which would be the first Ashes Test at the ground.

"It would be just fantastic to see Tim (Paine) play at Bellerive as captain of Australia. We've been having ongoing discussions with Cricket Tasmania and the CEO of Cricket Australia," Gutwein told parliament.

"Today I'll be writing to Cricket Australia to formally put our case for the relocation of the Test match scheduled to commence on Jan. 14 in WA.

"Their borders will not be open by then. Tasmania is ready to host that important match ... (which) would without doubt be the state's biggest sporting event that we've hosted to date."

Cricket Australia were not able to provide immediate comment.

CEO Nick Hockley said last month there had been "very constructive" discussions with the WA government about bringing players and staff into Perth after the fourth Test in Sydney, which starts on Jan. 5.

COVID-free WA remains effectively closed to travellers from New South Wales, of which Sydney is the capital, due to the presence of the novel coronavirus in the eastern state.

Travellers from New South Wales must apply for a permit to enter the state and quarantine for 14 days upon arrival.

WA Premier Mark McGowan said this week his state would not open up until 90% of its people above the age of 12 are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, a target expected to be achieved by late-January or early February.

Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews sounded confident of 80,000-plus fans attending the Boxing Day Test, the third Test of the 2021/22 Ashes series, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground at the end of the year. The hope came after the Victoria government announced an easing of lockdown curbs caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in the coming months.

"I want to see 80,000-plus people at the Boxing Day Test on Day One. That is what I want to see. And we are determined to deliver that. It won`t be easy, I think selling the tickets will be pretty easy. But we are very confident, very, very confident that we will be able to deliver that," Andrews said during a press conference on Sunday.

If a large number of crowds attend the first day of this year`s Boxing Day Test, then it will be the biggest attendance at a sporting event in Australia since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Last year, only 30,000 spectators per day were allowed to attend the Boxing Day Test against India at the MCG.

In June this year, Cricket Australia (CA) announced they would sell tickets of the Ashes to full capacity, barring the MCG, for which ticket sales were capped at 85 percent of capacity, pending government restrictions.

"We continue to work closely with venues and governments across Australia to ensure that events are held safely and greatly appreciate their support. In the event that capacities are reduced due to government restrictions associated with the pandemic, we of course guarantee fans full refunds," CEO Nick Hockley had said at that time.

Meanwhile, Christina Matthews, the CEO of Western Australia Cricket, has not given up on the hope of Optus Stadium in Perth hosting the final Ashes Test. There are still doubts over Perth hosting the final Ashes Test as`the state`s borders are closed to people coming from Victoria and New South Wales.

Veteran England pacer James Anderson has made an appeal to Australian cricketers to be "respectable" while engaging in verbal wars ahead of the Ashes. Veteran England pacer James Anderson has made an appeal to Australian cricketers to be "respectable" while engaging in verbal wars ahead of the Ashes. Australia Test skipper Tim Paine had said Ashes will go ahead even if England captain Joe Root won't be part of the tour amid ongoing uncertainty about the level of restrictions the visitors may face. Anderson termed the comments made by Paine as "dangerous" and pointed out that blocking unnecessary noise is an important aspect ahead of the Ashes. "It is dangerous to start talking like that, especially when we already have one player missing because he is looking after his mental health," Anderson told the UK's Daily Telegraph as reported by Fox Cricket. "I get it that this is an Ashes series and we are going to have this bit of pantomime stuff away from the cricket, but let's keep it respectable." "It is important everyone knows what to expect when we get there. There is always a lot of hype and noise around the Ashes in the build-up to it. Making everyone aware of that and having ways of blocking it out are important," he added. The legendary fast bowler highlighted that the all pre-Ashes war of words are made to distract England and it is important that the visitors focus on cricket. "It is designed to distract us. There are always little things that crop up. That is inevitable but it is important we try to focus as much as we can on the cricket. That is our job," said Anderson. "Our job is not really to get involved in any off-field war of words. We have to focus on our jobs on the field and perform for our country," he added.England squad for the Ashes: Joe Root (c), James Anderson, Jonathan Bairstow, Dom Bess, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Zak Crawley, Haseeb Hameed, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Dawid Malan, Craig Overton, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

Stokes was left out of coach Chris Silverwood's Ashes team after taking an extended break from cricket to focus on his mental health while also recovering from a second operation on a fractured finger.

England have finally named their squad for the Ashes tour to Australia, a series that was shadowed by the clouds of uncertainty a few days back after some English players raised concerns over tough COVID-19 quarantine rules in the visiting country.

England have finally named their squad for the Ashes tour to Australia, a series that was shadowed by the clouds of uncertainty a few days back after some English players raised concerns over tough COVID-19 quarantine rules in the visiting country. On Sunday (October 10), the head coach of the England cricket team, Chris Silverwood, named a 17-player squad for the Ashes tour starting in November. The official site of the England Cricket Board (ECB) mentioned that all 17 players have been capped at Test level and it is the strongest available squad. Ten of the 17 will be touring Australia in an Ashes series for the first time, including vice-captain Jos Buttler. England Test captain Joe Root and Buttler have been selected despite their recent remarks that they might not travel if their fears were not eased. Ben Stokes, England's all-rounder, was injured while taking a catch for his team Rajasthan Royals' first match in IPL 2021 against Punjab Kings after underwent another operation on his left index finger. He is yet to decide on his return to international cricket, and he may miss the Ashes in Australia later this year.

ECB's official site on Thursday (October 7) stated that the operation took place on Monday. Stokes' left index finger had two screws removed, as well as scar tissue. He will now spend the next four weeks undergoing intense rehabilitation under the guidance of the ECB's medical experts.

After playing in two matches for the Northern Superchargers in the hundred ball cricket on July 24 and 26, Stokes has not played any competitive cricket. Stokes had opted to take an indefinite break from cricket to focus on his mental health as he dropped out of the home Test series against India that began in August.

Managing Director of England Men's Cricket, Ashley Giles, had said in July: "Ben has shown tremendous courage to open up about his feelings and wellbeing.

"Our primary focus has always been and will continue to be the mental health and welfare of all of our people. The demands on our athletes to prepare and play elite sport are relentless in a typical environment, but the ongoing pandemic has acutely compounded this."

"Ben will be given as long as he needs, and we look forward to seeing him playing cricket for England in the future," he added.

Stokes has been left out of England's Twenty20 World Cup squad, and now might miss his Ashes series as well.

Stokes missed England's last tour of Australia in 2017/18 after his involvement in a brawl outside a Bristol nightclub. He was subsequently found not guilty of affray.

The tourists missed Stokes' contributions with bat and ball as Australia eased to a 4-0 series win to regain the urn.

Despite players' reservations about travelling in a COVID-19 "bubble," British media claimed that skipper Joe Root has confirmed teams’ participation in the series and will be accompanied by a full-strength squad.

Ben Stokes has lately posted a picture with his family where his injured index finger can be seen.

England's Ben Stokes could miss Ashes series after finger operation

The Australian government has been "flexible and practical" to ensure the Ashes can go ahead but the fate of the series lies in England's hands, health minister Greg Hunt said on Tuesday.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will decide this week whether the proposed arrangements in Australia are sufficient for the Ashes tour to go ahead.

England captain Joe Root and other players have expressed doubts about the tour due to "bubble fatigue" and concerns their families will not be able to travel with them due to Australia's strict COVID-19 protocols.

Hunt said Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and sports minister Richard Colbeck had been working with their British counterparts to deliver the series, which starts on Dec. 8 in Brisbane.

"Ultimately, it's always in the hands of the touring party, but we've been working to be flexible and practical," Hunt told Sky News Australia on Tuesday.

"On the one hand, make sure that we have safety arrangements for Australia. On the other hand, to be practical and flexible to give that touring party every chance of coming here and to have the Ashes played this summer."

The five-test series pours about A$200 million ($145.68 million) into Cricket Australia (CA) coffers through broadcast, sponsorship and ticketing, local media have reported.

CA has been negotiating with authorities and the ECB over travel conditions and whether players' families can visit during the Christmas and New Year period.

"We have had regular and positive discussions with the ECB over the past six months on providing conditions which will allow players from both teams to perform at their best during the Ashes summer," CA said in a statement.

"The health and wellbeing of both squads while ensuring the tour proceeds in a safe manner is a priority and we especially thank our government partners for all their support in this regard."

Australia has strict limits on international arrivals and charges people thousands of dollars to isolate in designated quarantine hotels for a mandatory 14 days, regardless of their COVID-19 vaccination status.

Morrison said last week authorities would lift travel curbs and allow fully vaccinated people to quarantine at home for shorter periods from next month when the proportion of adults who have had two vaccine shots is expected to reach 80%.

International tourists are not expected to be able to travel to Australia until next year, however.

Australia 'flexible and practical' for Ashes but ultimately it's in England's hands, says Aussie health minister

Former England skipper Andrew Strauss said that the Ashes against Australia should go ahead as planned because the showpiece Test series means a lot to a lot of people. The series, which is scheduled to start in Brisbane on December 8, looks doubtful as a few England players are sceptical and expressed their concerns over strict COVID-19 quarantine restrictions in Australia.

Some players have even sought assurances for their family members to be allowed to join them for the series. In Australia, international arrivals have to undergo a mandatory 14-day hotel quarantine even for the fully vaccinated.

Now, Strauss has said that according to him, the Ashes "need to go ahead". "We are learning to live with Covid in this country and Australia is in a slightly different place. But the Ashes means a lot to a lot of people, and some of them are people that are going through a tough time themselves," he was quoted by Daily Mail.

"It defies belief that all these other sports are taking place and that the Ashes doesn’t take place. There is a way of making it happen and I think we are moving in the right direction. I think there will be accommodations made and that families will get out there," he added.

England skipper Joe Root, vice-captain Jos Buttler, pacer Stuart Broad are some players who have openly expressed concerns. "Personally, I think if you are selected on an Ashes tour, you should go. An Ashes tour is not the one to pull out of, in my opinion. But I understand that everyone sees things slightly differently," Strauss said.

"But I think that between Cricket Australia, the Australian government and the ECB, they will find a way that works for both the players and their families," Strauss further added.

Recently, Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison had warned that England's cricketers and their families will be given "no special deals" over quarantine.

His remarks came after meeting with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Washington DC, following their trips to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Strauss further said that he feels if the series will happen, England team will face some odds, he said, "I think we are going to have to play a lot better than we did this summer, put it that way."

"Our top order needs to function better than it has done for a long time.
‘Playing against the new ball in Australia is a very tough thing to do. There will be a lot of responsibility on our bowling attack. Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad will have a role to play but we can’t just rely on them to win us the Ashes," he added.

'I wouldn't be comfortable doing that': England's Jos Buttler says no family, no Ashes tour

The England and Wales Cricket Board expects the uncertainty over the team’s Ashes tour due to Australia’s stringent COVID-19 quarantine measures to continue till the last moment, chairman Ian Watmore has said.

England players have threatened to pull out of the series unless they get assurances that their family members will be allowed to join them in Australia during the five-test series in December and January.

Australia’s borders are effectively shut in an effort to control the pandemic, with caps on international arrivals and limited places available in the country’s mandatory hotel quarantine regime.

There are issues to sort out with Cricket Australia, there are issues for CA to sort out with their government and for the federal government to sort out with state governments. England board chief says Ashes remains a 'complicated picture'

The last quarter of 2021 promises to provide plenty of cricketing action for the gentlemen's game's ardent lovers worldwide with IPL 2021, T20 World Cup and Ashes 2021 on cards. However, the fate of Ashes 2021 hangs in the balance as Joe Root & Co. could boycott this year's Ashes citing strict bio-bubble life Down Under.

According to ESPN Cricinfo, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) remain adamant and have not given much thought about postponement, which has not been received well by the senior players and support staff.

"The prospect of England fielding a significantly under-strength squad in the Ashes would appear to have grown following talks between the team and officials at the ECB," the website reported. "As a result, they are considering their options. One of those options is understood to be the entire team - including coaching and support staff - taking a collective decision to boycott the tour.

"While the players appear, in general, fairly sanguine about the prospect of a two-week quarantine for themselves, they are reluctant to put their families through it. And with some players away for the best part of four months (the IPL being followed by the T20 World Cup and the Ashes), they are understandably reluctant not to see their families for the entire period," it stated.

Strict quarantine rules Down Under

It also reported, "The nature of the quarantine is also understood to have disappointed the players. Although there has been talk of allowing them the use of a resort hotel on the Gold Coast, it is now understood they are likely to be permitted only two or three hours out of their hotel rooms each day for training.

"There is also a possibility the squad will be obliged to remain in some sort of 'bubble' throughout the tour to avoid difficulties in moving between states. Families, meanwhile, could still be required to undergo a 'hard' quarantine involving 14 days in a hotel room."

Even during India's tour of Australia last year, the bio-bubble life had taken a toll on the Indian cricketers and many had opened up about how tough it had become for them by the end of the tour.

Thus, it remains to be seen how the forthcoming Ashes 2021 will go ahead or will Root & Co. simply boycott the upcoming edition. For the unversed, Ashes 2019 had ended in a 2-2 scoreline, which provided enthralling contest between bat and ball throughout the English summer.

As many as 10 England players could be forced to pull out of the Ashes tour of Australia if an agreement is not arrived at over travel and quarantine arrangements for their families.

According to a report in the 'Sydney Morning Herald', unhappy with Cricket Australia's lack of progress on this front, many English players are considering pulling out if their demands are not met.

At a meeting of the England squad at Headingley this week, it is understood there was mounting frustration about a lack of progress by Cricket Australia over quarantine rules, the daily reported.

Australia has some of the strictest COVID-19 quarantine regulations in place and its own cricketers are currently serving two weeks in an Adelaide hotel after returning from a white-ball tour of West Indies and Bangladesh.

The Australian players are also not allowed to train at the moment. It is understood that CA doesn't have enough influence over the government there and even individual states can impose a ban or shut the city entirely on quick notice, disturbing all the agreements made before the players left the UK.

CA said on Saturday it was working closely with government and health officials in its quest to find a solution.

"Cricket Australia continues to work closely with the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) and government authorities in Australia regarding the upcoming Ashes series, which will be the centrepiece for one of the biggest summers of cricket on record," a CA statement read.

"We are currently planning the operational requirements of this tour and working with the ECB on the proposed make-up of the England touring party. "As was the case last season, CA will work constructively and in partnership with government to deliver the summer of cricket, while ensuring the health, wellbeing and safety of the community."

It's important now that he takes the time to get it right, not just for the Ashes but to prolong his career for another four or five or six years,” Paine pointed out.

The Ashes in the not-so-distant future is probably going to see full limit crowds, with all scenes aside from the MCG being offered to the full limit. Tickets are being offered to the full limit, except for the Melbourne Cricket Ground which has an 85 percent limit presently. Regardless of whether the standard crowds of Barmy Army allies will actually want to make a trip to Australia, given current restrictions on worldwide restrictions, stays unclear.

"Absolutely, I hope they do open up (the borders) because they bring a brilliant atmosphere. The Barmy Army is a crucial part of the history of the Ashes and something the players love, whether they're ripping into you or barracking for the English. It adds to the Test match, to the theatre, so fingers crossed those guys can get in,” Paine signed off.

Cricket: 'Important he takes time' — Tim Paine urges Steve Smith not to rush injury return

Mitchell Starc is ready to allow himself the best opportunity of being prepared for Test cricket in the midst of a schedule crunch which is additionally convoluted by the quarantine necessities in Australia.

Mitchell Starc is one of Australia's multi-format players who could be affected by the exceptionally close turnaround between the T20 World Cup and the beginning of the home Test season against Afghanistan in Hobart. He has depicted the forthcoming stage as an 'interesting' one for multi-format players from the nation will have to barge between formats.

Opening up on the tight schedule, which could represent a test for multi-format players, Mitchell Starc was cited as saying by ESPN Cricinfo: "It's a very interesting one. I'm sure Cricket Australia is thinking about it and putting plans in place. The way of the world at the moment throws up a lot of hurdles, and then you are throwing two weeks of quarantine like we are going to have to do coming back from this tour as well; there's a lot of question marks."

Mitchell Starc, notwithstanding, called attention to that rules contrast as per the venues, and things could be chipped away at, alluding to the home series against India.

"You look back to the summer, and we played Sydney under restrictions; Brisbane was under full quarantine, so there's certainly precedence set there in how we approach different games, especially in Australia. In that respect, I don't think there're any hurdles to get around in playing cricket under quarantine conditions; it's just some of the finer details that government and cricket will have to work together," he added.

The 31-year-old conceded that the multi-format players would need to play as much cricket as possible. He said in such a manner: “Test cricket is certainly the pinnacle for a lot of us; certainly it is for me, as is a World Cup, so it will be hard to pick and choose."

The Australian limited-overs crew has shown up in West Indies for an essential visit in front of the T20 World Cup. Following their Caribbean trip, they will go to Bangladesh for another white-ball series. While many enormous names, including David Warner, Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, and Steve Smith, have opted out from the two tours, Mitchell Starc will be anticipating stretch out beyond the T20 World Cup.

"It's a great opportunity for the group to start preparing with a bit more focus on that World Cup," he said. "Don't think I've played 10 T20s in the last four years let alone in the space of a few weeks so personally, it would be nice to get a bit of a rhythm of T20 cricket.

"The back end of the summer I was heavily focused on the red-ball so put the white-ball to the side. A report in the UK media house suggested that it is still unclear whether families of the England cricketers travelling to Australia will be permitted to stay with them during the Ashes, beginning on December 8.

"Read reports today that England cricketers may not be able to have family members with them down under this winter .. Quite simply if they can’t they should call the Ashes off .. 4 months away from your family is totally unacceptable .. #Ashes," Vaughan wrote on his Twitter handle.

Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-Ul-Haq has said that India vs Pakistan matches have more following than The Ashes. He urged that a bilateral series between India and Pakistan is important.

"India-Pakistan series was followed much more than The Ashes and people thoroughly enjoyed each and every moment. For the betterment of the game and the players, it is important to have the Asia Cup and also bilateral series between India and Pakistan," Inzamam told Sportstar in an interview.

"Each and every competition is important. In our times, the Asia Cup was a tournament where the top teams would compete. The more you play high quality cricket, you develop your skills. For instance, if India were playing Pakistan, the players would be excited to put in their best efforts because they know the importance and intensity of these matches. That not only helps a player grow, but also helps him earn appreciation from the fans. I think it is important to have these tournaments."

Inzamam featured in several India vs Pakistan encounters between the 1990s and the early 2000s. He revealed his feelings about being a part of India vs Pakistan match.

"When we would play against each other, it was a great feeling. In those bilateral series, it was also an opportunity for the young cricketers to learn a thing or two from the senior players. Be it a Sachin Tendulkar or a Sourav Ganguly or Mohammad Azharuddin or Javed Miandad, the youngsters could just walk up to them and pick their brains. That was a fantastic opportunity to improve one’s game," the former Pakistan captain said.

"The on-field rivalry was intense, but at the end of the day, players respected each other and shared a camaraderie. Meri toh bari khwayaish hain ke yeh cheez dobara shuru ho jayein (I wish this [India-Pakistan series] resumes)."

"England possesses a potential series-winning group of fast bowlers. It is the top-order batting and Joe Root's captaincy that should be cause for concern. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood should rejoice if both names appear in the top slots on the team sheet at the Gabba. Given the skill of Australia's pace trio, poor starts could be a death sentence for England."

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has reacted to Cameron Bancroft's recent statements on the 2018 Sandpaper gate. He feels that the statement by the Aussie batsman will affect the upcoming Ashes series.

Cameron Bancroft's recent comments over the 2018 Sandpapergate to the Guardian has reopened the wounds of Australian cricket. The batsman had hinted that the bowlers in the match knew about ball-tampering. However, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon, who featured in the Test match, issued a statement to clarify that they were unaware of the incident.

In his latest column for The Telegraph, Vaughan wrote that the Sandpaper gate has shown 'cracks' in the Australian team. He even added that England's Test captain, Joe Root, will be enjoying it.

“Dragging up the ball-tampering scandal has shown there are cracks in the Australia team that England could exploit if they start the Ashes series well later this year. David Warner, Steve Smith and the bowlers are under scrutiny again, and it would only take a poor Australia performance in the first Ashes Test for the pressure to mount. The captain, Tim Paine, is under the microscope after defeat by India, and while some think this could galvanise Australia, rarely are such public problems good for a team's unity.

"Joe Root will be enjoying this and thinking it could help. He knows an argument or two in the opposing team is always good. But fundamentally, England still have to play great cricket to win in Australia. They should not become distracted by Australia’s problems. Enjoy it in private, but rise above it in public,” Vaughan wrote in his column for The Telegraph as reported by The Sydney Morning Herald.

“England have enough to worry about in their own backyard, by making sure they arrive with a settled batting unit, a fit bowling attack and a team who can ultimately win in those conditions. There are cracks in the England team as well, and I see two sides who are quite similar. Both are quite vulnerable and that should make for a fascinating contest,” he wrote.

Cricket Australia has released the schedule for the much-anticipated Ashes series. The Australian cricket board are hopeful to stage the series in front of a full crowd, however, they said that will follow government advice when it came to admitting travelling supporters.

According to the schedule, the Ashes is will kick off at the Gabba in Brisbane on December 8. Followed by a pink ball Test at the Adelaide Oval, then Melbourne hosting the traditional Boxing Day Test match. Sydney and Perth will host the remaining two games of the five-match Test series.

Any time that Jofra can’t bowl you’re going to be frustrated as a leader, or as a team. But it happens. In sport, people get injured. That’s life. That’s a sport. He’s still willing to be out there because he wants Sussex to win. The ECB had to give him permission to play this game. He’s not our player so they had to give permission" - he added. While speaking in a podcast, on ‘Road To The Ashes’ podcast, former Aussie skipper felt that Archer will be a ‘trump card’ for the English team as they face Australia in the Ashes later this year.

“The first time I saw him [Archer] I thought he looked very similar to the first time I saw [West Indies great] Curtly Ambrose, in that he has the ability to lift an extra gear and he can make things happen quickly. ‘So, for me, he really is a trump card for England’s chances in Australia. I think the key player is Jofra Archer,” Waugh spoke on Road To The Ashes podcast.

“He’s something different and will enjoy the pace and bounce of the Australian wickets and is potentially a world-class bowler,” the former Australian captain added.

Waugh went on to discuss the "brittle" batting lineups of both the teams and he reckoned that it entirely depends upon the batters ‘to lay the platform’.

"Both batting orders have been a bit brittle over the last six to 12 months and England – like Australia – need to get 600 runs on the board across both innings and then both teams are capable of bowling the opposition out twice, so it’s really up to the batters to lay the platform," Steve Waugh said.
