Filmmaker Shakun Batra known for two refreshingly different films in Bollywood -'Ek MainAur Ek Tu' and the brilliant 'Kapoor and Sons' has made a distinct mark in the film industry with his slice of life films. In his latest, 'Gehraiyaan' he delves deep into human emotions and relationships and tells the story of very complicated, conflicted individuals.

The trailers of the film, which have dominated screens for the last two months or so, hint at a story of adultery, but in reality 'Gehraiyaan' is about a complex person called Alisha, brilliantly played by Deepika Padukone, and the people in her life.

When the film opens, Alisha or Al as they call her is struggling to find investors for her fitness app, running her household and perhaps her 6-year-old relationship with Karan(Dhairya Karwa) which somehow feels jaded now and struggling with suicidal thoughts and her past memories of childhood.

A weekend with her estranged cousin Tia(Ananya Panday) in a luxury yacht becomes life-changing as she meets Zain (Siddhant Chaturvedi). Sparks fly almost immediately between Alisha and Zain and they draw closer, opening up about their vulnerabilities, their journey in life. They know they are in love but things are complicated- Zain is engaged to Tia and Karan and Alisha have been living in for the last 6 years.

Alisha and Zain have to not just deal with their respective partners but also deal with crises up close. Does their relationship withstand the test of time, forms the rest of the story.

While infidelity has been dealt with in many ways on the big screen before, what stands out in 'Gehraiyaan' is the complex characters. Both Alisha and Zain come with their own baggage and draw closer perhaps because they find solace in each other or connect easily because of a troubled past.

While the film has four principal characters, it ultimately focuses the most on Alisha. Written by Batra, Ayesha Devitre, Sumit Roy and Yash Sahai, the film has the most complex leading lady that Bollywood has seen in recent times.

Alisha is not an easy person to be around. She is tired of the relationship that she is- it has lost the spark, she has a troubled past that keeps haunting her, she has been on her own for so long that she is scared to be vulnerable in front of anyone and she is wary of the love that comes her way. Padukone adapts to the complexities with such ease that it seems Alisha is an extension of her. It's great to watch Padukone play an urban character after a long time. Barring 'Chhapaak', her past few screen outings have been in period dramas. Even her last release '83' in which she had a cameo, was set in the 1980s.

Padukone dominates every frame that she is in and carries the film forward. It is a mature, restrained performance. As Alisha, she is whimsical and moody and represents Batra film well.

Chaturvedi on the other hand appears restricted. The actor had shown great spark in his debut film 'Gully Boy' but in 'Gehraiyaan' he appears slightly lost. The chemistry between him and Padukone also seems a little misplaced.

Ananya Panday on the other hand holds her own in the film. The film is about Alisha, but Panday's Tia stays with you too, for the actress brings in the right amount of vulnerability to her character.Karwa, on the other hand, gets a raw deal. Despite his charming screen presence, Karwa's Karan is the least flexed out character in the film. He doesn't even get a back story, unlike the other three characters. Much like his character, the writers too were lazy to write his character well.

Pavleen Gujral has an interesting cameo and delivers to her part well. Veterans Naseeruddin Shah and Rajat Kapor also perform well in their limited roles. Scenes between Shah and Padukone are the most special- and sensitively dealt with. The two actors perform the scenes beautifully as well.

Shakun Batra attempts a relationship noir with 'Gehraiyaan' and is partly successful in delivering one. It's a moody whimsical film but with some glaring flaws. Padukone and Panday and Karwa are supposed to be of similar age - which in reality they aren't and the difference is obvious. Also, the runtime of the film at 2hrs 28 minutes is a bit of stretch with many shots kept in to take in the silence and grasp the complexities.

Batra's 'Kapoor and Sons' was a bright, sharp take on the dysfunctionalities of Indian families. In 'Gehraiyaan' he attempts to highlight the dysfunctionalities in relationships but unlike 'Kapor and Sons', this one isn't a shining effort.

Much like its music, it's whimsical and not for everyone's palate.

What shines in 'Gehraiyaan' though is Deepika Padukone's performance. She plays the most complicated character in her career and manages to make it memorable.

'Gehraiyaan' is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

The teaser opens with a knock on Deepika's door with Siddhant on the other side of the door. The door opens and the two then can be seen engaged in a passionate embrace as they kiss each other. The plot of the film is not known yet but it appears to be a love story and complications that come along with it.

The film also gives a glimpse of Ananya Panday and Dhairya Karwa's characters.

'Gehraiyaan' was announced before the lockdown in early 2020 but got delayed due to the pandemic. It will now release on Amazon prime on January 25.

A day earlier the cast had shared images of the film.

"Yes…It has been a bit of a wait. But as the saying goes…Sometimes, the longer you wait for something, the more you appreciate it when it finally arrives! Hopefully, the same holds true here. I took the opportunity to be a part of something that I believe was truly magical. And with love in my heart and utmost gratitude, I cannot wait to share our labour of love with all of you…Stay tuned for the announcement tomorrow!," Deepika had captioned the post as she shared still from the film.

A: The collection is called `Ready. Set. Play.` and it`s inspired by Lakme`s beauty theme #MiniPlayMegaSlay and the games and the small things we find joy in. As a brand we were faced with so many hurdles and challenges, but I also found a lot of excitement and happiness along the way in the creation of this collection. It came to life during the pandemic at a time when we were all looking for ways to find some cheer amid the gloom.

In tough moments like these, it becomes important to look back and discover what made the journey thus far so unique and special. This collection is, in a way, about the delight of building Bodice from the ground up, piece by piece -- adding two, three, five more blocks for every one block that fell out. We`ve experimented quite a bit in this collection, introducing more colours than we usually do and also playing with the silhouettes. Of course the Bodice signature of lines and a structural approach to our silhouettes is very much present.

Q: What influences of the pandemic can we see on the collection?

A: What we create will inevitably be impacted by what we`re going through inwardly. While creating this collection in isolation in the Bodice studio, I realised I was working much more freely and minus the stress and anxiety of making a collection. I rediscovered the joy in the process which allowed me to experiment with the colours and the silhouettes.

Q: How has the pandemic changed the perspective towards your craft?

A: I don`t think it has, except, like I said, it has taught me that we don`t always need to take everything so seriously but at the same time, it is also important to take nothing for granted. The process is where the joy lies, and that`s what this collection is about.

Q: What changes has it brought in the way fashion is perceived?

A: People are taking more notice of what is right and wrong, they are asking more and more questions before buying anything, and realising the importance of pieces that last a lifetime over fast fashion pieces. I think there is a general mindfulness and a state of hyper awareness regarding what is being sold.

Q: How do you see the industry shaping in a post pandemic era?

A: We`re still very much in the pandemic and the industry is still finding its way to function around it. Finding novel ways like the Phygital edition of the FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week is just one example of how people are getting innovative in finding solutions after a year of a lot of frustration and disappointment. Hopefully fashion will become more and more local and the conversations around sustainability will only amplify going forward.

Q: How do you think the Indian fashion industry is placed on a global platform, amid the pandemic?

A: People are definitely taking notice, which they already were even before the pandemic. Covid surely accelerated that but I think Indian fashion was already getting attention and appreciation for our innate wisdom in ancient crafts, the wonderful textiles we have in our backyard, and the sheer skill of the artisans. I think that is something we at Bodice have always strived for -- to bring this craftsmanship to the world to take note of -- and it is wonderful to see it happening at such a great magnitude.

Q: What changes do you think the industry has to undergo in order to minimise the carbon footprint and become more sustainable?

A: I think some of the things that will help us keep our footprint in check are holistic sustainability measures that are treated as every small and big business` responsibility, working closely with local artisans, tailors, weavers, etc., investment pieces that are made to order and last long, a bottom-up approach to ethical decisions starting from the initial stages of production to packaging and shipping.

Q: How is your brand working towards sustainability?

A: Doing things sustainably was never a conscious decision for me. I simply wouldn`t have done it otherwise. With Bodice, I have always treated it as a responsibility and not something we do over and above everything else. Ethical decisions and accountability are good values to have. It isn`t an added conversation, it is just the foundation of every conversation at Bodice. And I think it is the responsibility of every designer at this day and age; in fact it should be a prerequisite to designing clothes, I feel. We question every norm and try and rethink it with the help of extensive research and knowledge.
The film's teaser was unveiled on Monday morning and shows its two leads going on a roller-coaster ride in a black and yellow (Kaali Peeli) taxi in Mumbai. The nearly 1.5 minute-long teaser then sees Khatter running way with Panday with a bag of cash and some jewelry in their taxi. While Ishaan has been introduced as a half-murder accused in the teaser, Ananya is introduced as a dancer. Here, have a look at the teaser. Helmed by debutant director Maqbool Khan and backed by filmmaker Ali Abbas Zafar, Himanshu Mehra, and Zee Studios, the film also stars `Paatal Lok` actor Jaideep Ahlawat. 'Khaali Peeli` went on the floors in September 2019 and was scheduled for a June 12 release but was delayed due to the pandemic. The new release date of the film has not yet been announced. It is not yet confirmed if the film will be released on OTT platform or will get a theatrical release.

Ananya Panday to make her Telugu debut with Vijay Deverakonda's 'Fighter'

Filmmaker Punit Malhotra's film 'Student of The Year 2' may want you to believe that the film is based in the present day but quite honestly, the plot is straight out of the 90s era wherein the garb of a campus-romance Bollywood managed to sell to the viewer a whole lot of lies about actual college life. And that's not even the main problem of the film

Set in Mussoorie and Dehradun, the film practically takes on the same milieu of the 2012 film 'Student Of The Year' complete with gloss and illogical storyline. Tiger Shroff plays Rohan part of Pishori Lal Chaman Lal College aspiring to be part of the coveted, uppity St Teresa's where his girlfriend Mridula aka Mia (Tara Sutaria) studies. It's a college for the rich kids, where even the security guard looks down at outsiders. The hilly town is also gearing up for the inter-college tournament called the Dignity Cup which has been won for the past years by of course the college of the rich kids.

Amid preparations and pep talks, Rohan gets a seat in St. Teresa's on sports scholarship mid-term. Don't ask how it's possible for anyone to go to another college in the third year that too mid-term but logic is not what the makers are selling in this film. Instead, they are endorsing a make-believe world where the students wear uniform arbitrarily, where the main battle is always amongst the boys and where students prepare year long not for the final exams but for a kabaddi match that will lead one of them to win the coveted 'Student Of The Year' award.

A 29-year-old Shroff - with triceps and biceps- is passed off as a college student in a role that, like most of other Shroff's previous films- is tailor-made for him. And the actor does justice to his character. Why won't he? He gets to showcase his dancing skills, there is ample scope for him to show of his ability to perform stunts, with fight scenes put in just so that the leading men get to flex their muscles and go shirtless if need be. Heck, even the kabaddi match is re-imagined with aerial flips and jumps- something that perhaps the age-old Indian game has never seen before. Of the cast, Shroff is the only popular star and the crowd-puller and he doesn't disappoint. Also read: Tiger Shroff on his action-hero image: Glad that Bollywood stereotypes its actors

The other actor who impresses is Aditya Seal. Remember the young boy in 'Chhoti Si Ek Love STory'? He has now grown up and holds his own in a stereotypical role of a rich boy who doesn't like to lose anything. Seal and Shroff together pull off most of the film with their dilaogue baazi, muscles, looks and well, acting.

The girls- Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria- make their debut in this film. Panday gets a better-defined role and thus shines whereas Sutaria struggles in her sketchy character. Both have immense screen presence though but the film is not really about them, it is about the men. Which is perhaps the main problem with the film.

Even if we keep the prequel as a yardstick (which is not saying much about the film anyway), the women are so poorly represented in the entire plot that it is jarring after a point of time. Only men's team compete for the final round of 'Dignity Student Of The Year' and women stand in the corner, look pretty and cheer for the man they love. One could argue that the prequel also showed two men competing for the final round but at least there- women took part and got disqualified eventually. But in Punit Malhotra's world, the only ambition that Panday and Sutaria's characters have is to win the dancer's trophy. No other woman seems interested in sports. They also gave token representation to LGBTQ community through Gul Panag's character but that seems irrelevant to the plot.

If at all SOTY 2 works it's because of Shroff's mind-numbing aerial acts and Dharma gloss that tries to cover up all the problems in the story. But after a point of time, the sheen also comes off leaving you feeling that you know this story too well- after all, a bunch of us have grown up watching and idolizing Mansoor Khan's 'Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander' which had a similar storyline.

Watch it if you are a hardcore Dharma fan, watch it for Shroff and Seal. But you will be left exasperated because of the predictability after a point of time.

'Student Of The Year 2' review: Tiger Shroff impresses in a shallow, glossy, problematic film

It is almost 2020, and Bollywood still finds joy in making films on adultery. A middle-class married man wanting to look out of his marriage out of sheer boredom in his life and befriending a young damsel (not in distress) just for fun and then hiding the relationship from his wife is a story bit too dated. And while we shrug and say ‘Men will be men’, director Mudassar Aziz lets the women take control of the situation and teach a lesson or two to the philandering man in his new film ‘Pati, Patni Aur Woh’.

A remake of a rather controversial, sexist 1973 film by the same name, the 2019 version tries to adapt an age-old story but with contemporary twists to the narrative. The story is set in Kanpur, a small-town city in northern India, which is trying to strike a balance between modernity and traditional values. So you have Chintu, the husband( Kaartik Aaryan) as the complacent middle-class man who is rather jaded with mundanities in his life. He works in the Public Works Department of the city and has a feisty, ambitious wife Vedika (Bhumi Pednekar) who has a mind of her own and wants him to shift to Delhi for a better life, which Chintu relents obviously. Three years into the marriage, things seem to be going great, just that the routine has crept into their relationship as a third wheel and distance – both emotional and in bed- seemed to have increased over a period of time.

Enter Tapasya (Ananya Panday) a sassy designer from Delhi who seeks Chintu’s help to get a plot to set up a manufacturing unit in Kanpur. Chintu cooks up a story of a fictional affair that wife is having to gain sympathy from Tapasya and in turn spend more time with her. Naturally, a web of lies complicates Chintu's life and even though his best friend Fahim (Aparshakti Khurana) helps him cover up his tracks, he still questions his intent and loyalty at every step.

Aziz, who has written the screenplay as well as the dialogues, gives the two women more individuality and lets them take charge even as the men (Chintu, Fahim and Vedika’s ardent admirer Rakesh Yadav) fumble at every step. Bollywood has churned out several films on infidelity but in most, the men have come out clean, unscathed and hero-like. In ‘Pati, Patni Aur Woh’, the strongest character is that of Vedika’s who has a mind of her own, is ambitious and even a fan following in the college where she teaches. So when she finds out about her cheating husband, her reaction is far more practical than her screen contemporaries. She is stunned, but never breaks down or loses control- instead, she walks out without really creating much fuss about her crumbling marriage.

The film wins primarily for how it deals with the women characters. Even Tapasya is shown to have a lot of confidence and a strong mind- attributes that Chintu lack. She is not ready to play the home breaker initially and is even okay to talk it out with the wife before taking the plunge with Chintu.

The three leads do a credible job in the film, that propel the viewing experience. Aryan plays the flawed, charming Chintu effortlessly. After Ayushmann Khurrana, Aaryan seems to have adapted the small-town hero template well and gets the dialects, the mannerism of a middle-class married man quite well. Panday, in her second film after ‘Student Of The Year 2’, plays a character far more mature and older than her age quite convincingly. She fits the big city girl with a good heart template well and the young actress exudes confidence as Tapasya.

The film though has Pednekar and Aparshakti Khurana in top form. A credible actress, Pednekar exudes a different level sass as the ambitious, practical, sultry Vedika who knows she is still desired by men- with or without a marriage tag attached to her. Pednekar’s Vedika is smug but loving and practical and a far cry from her character in her debut film ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ but the actress plays this part with absolute ease. Aparshakti Khurrana, who has by now aced playing the Hero’s friend films, gets the best lines in the film and does complete justice to his character as Fahim. Fahim and Chintu’s camaraderie provide the maximum laughs and it is a delight to watch Khurrana play the cocky loyal Fahim with such conviction.

Not just the characters but even the narrative is very topical where Aziz slips in jokes on minority and marginalisation, Indian’s obsession with winter weddings and even caste elitism. The lines are clever and witty and lift an otherwise ordinary narrative.

The film tends to get preachy in the second half though when the characters indulge in conversation of morals, the importance of love in marriage and loyalty. Those portions seem a bit stretched and puncture an otherwise breezy narrative.

‘Pati, Patni Aur Woh’ may be predictable but it still works for its lines, the actors and its contemporary take on marriage. It may not leave a lasting impression on you, but while you are watching it, you will find yourself rooting for the wife.
