Boeing has identified a software issue affecting some 737 MAX aircraft that could cause automated flight guidance to disengage during a specific landing scenario. The issue could potentially affect around 96 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft operated by Indian airlines Air India Express and Akasa Air. Air India Express operates around 53 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, while Akasa Air has a fleet of 43 737 MAX jets. A Boeing spokesperson told Reuters that the company had informed all 737 operators about the issue last month and was working on a software update to permanently resolve the problem. “Last month, we informed all 737 operators about a software issue where pilots may experience a reduction in automation during a landing scenario. We shared information with operators that reinforced existing pilot procedures for safely handling such cases,” the spokesperson said. Akasa Air said it was coordinating with Boeing and that the issue had no impact on the safety of its operations. However, the airline did not clarify whether any of its 737 MAX aircraft had experienced the software issue. Air India Express did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) also had not immediately commented on whether it was reviewing the issue or considering any advisory for Indian carriers. The development comes amid increased scrutiny of Boeing aircraft in India following the June 2025 Air India crash in Ahmedabad and subsequent safety checks and incidents involving the airline's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner fleet.
What is the Boeing 737 MAX autopilot glitch?
The software issue is linked to a cockpit software update and can reportedly occur when flight crews modify their planned flight path following a missed approach, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal citing Boeing documents. Sources said the automated flight guidance system could disengage after a missed approach if the new approach path differs from the route that was originally planned. The issue does not prevent pilots from manually flying the aircraft. Boeing has advised operators to reset the system after a missed approach as a precaution, according to sources cited by news agency PTI. Boeing is developing a permanent software update to address the issue. In the meantime, existing procedures have been communicated to operators to help pilots manage the situation safely. Also Read: Protests in Ujjain over portion of Shahi Masjid removal: Stone-pelting reported, tear gas used
Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in India under safety scrutiny
The latest software issue comes after the June 2025 crash involving an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad. The crash killed 260 people. Following the accident, the DGCA mandated safety and pre-flight maintenance checks for Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft operated by Indian airlines. In another incident in February this year, an Air India Boeing 787-8 operating a London-Bengaluru flight was grounded after its pilot reported a possible problem involving the fuel-control switch locking mechanism. The government later said Boeing's detailed examination of the mechanism had found no abnormality. The fuel-control switch controls the flow of fuel to an aircraft's engines. The crew had reported that the switch twice failed to remain positively latched in the “run” position when light vertical pressure was applied during engine start-up. It remained stable on the third attempt, and the flight was completed without incident. The 787 Dreamliner incidents are separate from the latest software issue involving certain 737 MAX aircraft.
737 MAX software issue has no impact on safety: Akasa Air
Akasa Air said it was working closely with Boeing regarding the software issue and maintained that there was no impact on the safety of its 737 MAX operations. “We are closely coordinating with Boeing and can confirm that there is no impact on the safety of Akasa Air operations,” an airline spokesperson told PTI. “Our aircraft continue to operate safely in accordance with established procedures and applicable regulatory requirements,” the spokesperson said. Akasa Air did not disclose whether any aircraft in its 737 MAX fleet had experienced the issue. Air India Express did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The DGCA had also not immediately responded to questions about whether it was examining the issue or planning to issue an advisory to Indian airlines.
Boeing 737 MAX safety history
The latest software issue adds to the extensive regulatory and industry scrutiny that has surrounded the Boeing 737 MAX. The aircraft was grounded globally following two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019. A Lion Air 737 MAX 8 crashed in Indonesia in October 2018, killing 189 people, while an Ethiopian Airlines 737 MAX 8 crashed in March 2019, killing 157 people. The aircraft family came under renewed scrutiny in January 2024 after a door plug separated from an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 during a flight. The incident led to investigations into Boeing's manufacturing and quality-control processes. More recently, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines, two major US carriers, asked Boeing not to deliver new 737 MAX aircraft equipped with the software associated with the latest issue. Instead, they reportedly requested aircraft with an earlier software version, according to The Wall Street Journal. Boeing has delivered more than 2,400 737 MAX aircraft to airlines worldwide.
What happens next?
Boeing is working on a permanent software update to address the flight-guidance issue. Until the update is implemented, operators have been provided with procedures intended to help flight crews safely manage the situation if it occurs following a missed approach. For Indian carriers, the issue comes at a time when aircraft safety and maintenance procedures are receiving heightened attention from regulators and passengers.

Air India on Friday (Sep 4) terminated the pilot-in-command of a Phuket-Delhi flight after he tested positive for a psychoactive substance, weeks after the aircraft suffered a sudden altitude loss over Odisha that left 24 passengers injured. The pilot was in command of flight AI2379, an Airbus A320 carrying 145 people, when the aircraft dropped over 300 feet on August 4 while cruising at 36,000 feet. In a statement, Air India said it has a zero-tolerance policy towards violations involving safety and regulatory requirements.“Safety remains Air India’s highest priority. The Pilot-in-Command of the Phuket-Delhi flight tested positive for a psychoactive substance. In line with Air India’s zero-tolerance approach to violation of safety, fitness or regulatory requirements, the pilot’s employment has been terminated with immediate effect,” the airline said on X.
What happened during the flight?
According to the preliminary report by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), the aircraft experienced the near-simultaneous loss of all three hydraulic systems while cruising at FL360. The failure led to an autopilot disconnect and a brief stall warning. The aircraft initially climbed 372 feet before dropping 292 feet from its assigned altitude. At the time, the co-pilot was flying the aircraft and attempted to regain control. The pilot-in-command subsequently took over the controls as the aircraft encountered the altitude upset. The flight controls later recovered, and the aircraft resumed normal operations. The plane landed safely in Delhi, where both pilots underwent drug-detection tests. The captain tested positive, while the co-pilot tested negative. However, the preliminary report did not establish that the pilot’s drug test result caused the hydraulic failure or the subsequent loss of altitude.
AAIB calls for action
The aviation investigation agency described the confirmed presence of psychoactive substances as a serious concern and recommended priority action by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).“Detailed investigation regarding technical and other aspects is underway,” the AAIB said. The report also noted that maintenance personnel had completed a pre-flight inspection and recorded no discrepancies.Air India said it would continue cooperating with the investigation and has begun voluntary testing of all its pilots as an additional safety measure.

More than a year after an Air India Boeing 787 crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, killing 260 people shortly after takeoff, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has told the Supreme Court that it expects to complete the investigation and submit a draft final report by October this year. The AAIB also informed the court that there is no need for a court monitored inquiry, stating that the investigation is being conducted in line with India's obligations under international aviation treaties. In its counter affidavit, the AAIB said the law governing aircraft accident investigations gives it exclusive authority to probe such incidents and does not allow the disclosure of protected investigation material. Citing Rule 17 of the 2025 Rules, the agency said witness statements, communications between people involved in operating the aircraft, medical and private information, cockpit voice recordings and transcripts, air traffic control recordings, cockpit image recordings and investigators' opinions cannot be made public unless the Central Government decides that disclosure is necessary despite its impact on the ongoing investigation or future inquiries. The bureau also opposed the petitioners' request to provide cockpit voice recordings to an external committee. "The Rules, 2025, contain crucial and mandatory safeguards relating to the confidentiality and integrity of investigative material. India's airline carriers have welcomed the country's new fund for the aviation sector. India has approved a 10,000 crore rupees aviation turbine fuel stabilisation fund to protect airlines from soaring fuel costs triggered by the ongoing conflict in west Asia. The measure highlights how geopolitical tensions can quickly ripple through global transportation and energy markets.

India Unveils Rs.10,000 Crore Aviation Lifeline For Airlines

India’s leading airlines have decided to cut down domestic flight operations amid rising fuel costs as tensions remain in West Asia. In a statement, Air India said that it was temporarily rationalising select domestic routes between June and August 2026. Reports suggested that IndiGo was also scaling down its domestic operations. This comes amid rising Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices as the global energy supply continues to be affected due to Iran war.In a statement, Air India said, “In continuation of our previously announced adjustments to select international services between June and August 2026, we have temporarily rationalised operations on certain domestic routes during the same period, with a reduction in frequencies on select routes. These adjustments are driven by the sustained impact of high fuel prices on overall operations.”According to a Reuters report, citing people familiar with the plans, the airlines will reduce their domestic capacity for June and July by 22 per cent.Days earlier, Air India announced the suspension and reduction of flights on 29 international routes due to soaring aviation turbine fuel prices, airspace curbs, and operational challenges arising from tensions in West Asia and the Strait of Hormuz crisis. The carrier had either suspended or scaled back services on routes spanning North America, Europe, Australia and Southeast Asia, affecting flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai to destinations including Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto, Paris, Singapore, Bangkok and Melbourne. However, it stated that it would still operate over 1,200 international flights each month across five continents despite the reductions.Meanwhile, The New Indian Express reported, citing sources, that similar plans were being decided by IndiGo, saying that the airline would reduce between 5 per cent and 7 per cent of its domestic operations.“Historically, the months following the academic vacation period witness lower occupancy levels. Due to the expected fall in demand, we will scale down operations from June 1. IndiGo operates 1,950 flights daily, so even a small percentage cut translates into a significant number of cancellations,” an airline source said, as quoted by The New Indian Express.

As FY26 ends, the ‘fasten seatbelt’ sign is still on for India’s aviation sector. Starting with the Pahalgam attack, Operation Sindoor in April 2025, to the West Asia conflict in March 2026, the sector was marred with multiple internal and external shocks. Rating agency ICRA had earlier projected that the industry would undergo a loss of Rs 17,000 to Rs 18,000 crore or about $2.16 billion. Here’s a look at key events that shaped the turbulent fiscal year 2025-2026 for the aviation industry
April 2025: Pahalgam attack
It was a shaky take-off for Indian airlines in the financial year 26. It started with the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. Travel agencies indicated nearly 90 percent bookings for Jammu and Kashmir were cancelled by tourists over safety concerns. India’s aviation sector may post ₹18,000 crore loss in FY26 after terror attacks, crashes, pilot shortages and West Asia war disruptions.

Here’s a look at key events that shaped the turbulent fiscal year 2025-2026 for the aviation industry April 2025: Pahalgam attack It was a shaky take-off for Indian airlines in the financial year 26. It started with the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. Travel agencies indicated nearly 90 percent bookings for Jammu and Kashmir were cancelled by tourists over safety concerns. Following the attack, airlines like Air India and IndiGo waived off cancellation and rescheduling fees. Special flights from Srinagar to several destinations were also added. May 2025: Operation Sindoor India’s military strike against terror camps in Pakistan followed in May 2025. At least 32 airports in northern India were shut. India: Air Tickets Get Costlier as Fuel Cost Spike To Push Airfares Higher

India’s top carriers are pushing back against a new Government of India (GOI) directive on seat selection. Generally, airlines charge anywhere from ₹200 to ₹2,100 to passengers for choosing seats according to their preference. The price depends on a number of factors, including front rows and extra legroom. However, amid the ongoing energy crisis due to the war between the United States, Israel and Iran in West Asia, the GOI has stepped up to ensure transparency and ease for the flyers. In a mandate issued this week, the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has directed airline operators to keep at least 60 per cent of seats on any flight free of charge for selection. However, airlines warned that the move could actually lead to a fare hike. It warned that, faced with significant revenue loss, airlines would be forced to raise fares. "The financial impact of the directive on airlines will be significant, compelling airlines to recover the lost revenues through increases in fares. As a result, all passengers, including those who may not wish to preselect seats, will end up paying higher fares," it said.Seat selection fees, it said, are not a bonus; they are part of how the business stays afloat.
