Fliers to pay up to $200 extra for Air India flights amid ATF price hike during Iran war. All you need to know

Air India has introduced a new fuel surcharge on international tickets as rising fuel costs and airspace disruptions linked to the Gulf conflict impact global aviation. The surcharge is expected to range between $10 and $200, depending on the route and distance.

Airlines are increasingly rerouting flights to avoid volatile airspace across parts of West Asia, leading to longer routes and higher operational costs. Aviation authorities have established safe air corridors to ensure that limited international flights can continue operating safely despite the crisis.

Air India has started the process of returning personal belongings recovered from the wreckage of its Ahmedabad plane crash to the families of victims, months after one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters in recent history.

The move comes as investigations and legal proceedings related to the crash continue in India and abroad.

It then returned to cargo operations in 2007 and was transferred following the Indian Airlines and Air India merger. Since then, it has served for India Post until being decommissioned in 2012.

How did Air India forget about its Boeing 737

This can be considered an institutional amnesia due to bureaucracy. The company's CEO, Campbell Wilson, noted that the company had no memory of the VT-EHH. In an internal memo, he said, Disposal of an old aircraft is not unusual.” But they had no record of it. The main culprit is attributed to the acquisition of Air India by the Tata group in 2022. However, before that, during the 2007 merger between Air India and Indian Airlines to form the National Aviation Company of India Limited (NACIL), later renamed Air India, all the assets were consolidated. Following that period and the decommissioning, the aircraft was lost in the internal records. This further highlights the bureaucracy and mismanagement of resources in state-owned enterprises. Kolkata airport has recently taken on the task of clearing such aircraft. It has unintentionally become the scrapyard of decommissioned aircraft. In the last 5 years, the airport have removed 14 such "ownerless" or decommissioned aircraft to free up much-needed parking space in the tarmac.

Air India’s forgotten Boeing 737 sat at Kolkata Airport for 13 years, leading to a ₹1 crore parking bill. The rediscovery exposes major bureaucratic lapses.

A Boeing 737, a 43-year-old stalwart, has been lying in rust at the Kolkata Airport for 13 years. It seems Air India forgot that the aircraft was still in the books. It has a massive parking bill now, approximately 1 crore. The aircraft registered as VT-EHH was decommissioned in 2012, but was left in the taxiway of Kolkata Airport. On November 14, it was cleared from the airport, and it is now in Bengaluru, where it will be used to train maintenance engineers. VT- EHH career- The aircraft was first inducted into service in 1982. It initially flew for Indian Airlines for a few years, then it was leased to Alliance Air from 1998. It then returned to cargo operations in 2007 and was transferred following the Indian Airlines and Air India merger. Since then, it has served for India Post until being decommissioned in 2012.

Air India has launched a new recruitment campaign for pilots, saying that “The sky isn't the limit, it's just the beginning” as it invites aviators to join the Tata-owned carrier. The airline, which returned to Tata Group ownership in October 2021, is seeking pilots for its Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft, core workhorses for short and medium-haul routes. Although the announcement would typically appeal only to aviation professionals, it gained widespread attention on social media due to ongoing turbulence at rival airline IndiGo.

Over the past week, India’s aviation network has been disrupted by IndiGo’s large-scale flight cancellations, delays, and rescheduling. The chaos stems from a sudden shortage of pilots and cabin crew triggered by IndiGo’s implementation of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s updated Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) issued last year. “Shape the next era of Indian aviation. We’re inviting seasoned B737 and A320 pilots to join our expanding fleet. Applications are open until December 22,” Air India posted on Instagram.

Also Read: New NCERT class 7 social science textbook expands coverage on Mahmud of Ghazni’s invasion in detail

See the hiring post from Air India here

The move comes as IndiGo races to hire more pilots to counter the operational strain caused by the new FDTL norms, which are designed to ensure adequate rest and fatigue management for flight crew. The revised guidelines created a ripple effect, forcing IndiGo to adjust its schedules and increasing staffing pressure. Air India specified that it is seeking experienced, type-rated commanders for the A320 fleet. For its B737 operations, the airline is open to hiring both type-rated and non-type-rated pilots. A type rating certifies that a pilot is trained and approved to operate a particular aircraft model.

Despite IndiGo’s assurance that performance is gradually returning to normal, cancellations continued. Meanwhile, shares of InterGlobe Aviation Limited, the parent company of IndiGo, fell 6.9%, marking the steepest decline in eight months. With IndiGo controlling nearly two-thirds of India’s domestic market, the mass disruptions left thousands of travellers stranded countrywide.

'The sky isn't the limit': Air India opens hiring for pilots as IndiGo struggles with operational crisis

Air India Crash: The Supreme Court of India has firmly stated that the preliminary Air India crash report does not blame the pilot for the tragic accident that claimed 260 lives in Ahmedabad in June 2025. The bench, while hearing a plea filed by the pilot’s father seeking an independent probe, emphasized that the ongoing investigation does not insinuate any wrongdoing on the part of the pilot.
