Cricket has changed a lot since the invention of T20 format. Not only in the manner of how it is played and approached, in the way of how it will be led heading forward as well. While a little more than a decade back a single captain leading a team across formats was considered normal but now with the surge in the franchise-based T20 cricket and with everyone trying to try their hand at everything available, this doesn’t look like a reality. Expressing his opinion on the same, former India opener Aakash Chopra said the days of a single captain leading in all formats are now over.

Adding that teams will adapt this policy of split captaincy heading forward, Chopra said India, for the meantime will have Rohit Sharma as their ODI and Test skipper at least until the 2023 home World Cup.

As Hardik got appointed as the new T20I captain and is likely to stick around in this role till the next T20 World Cup; Aakash feels Rohit could also pave way for someone younger in the longer formats - probably like Rishabh Pant or even Shubman Gill, both of whom he believes have the potential to lead the Indian team in future.

“I don’t think we will see a single captain for all formats just yet, I think those days are over. Rohit Sharma will be the Test team’s captain till the WTC, that’s not going to change - it is going to stay like that. Hardik Pandya is currently the captain in the T20 format, and I think he will continue to do so and in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, you will see Pandya be the captain of the Indian team," Aakash Chopra said on JioCInema’s new daily sports show, Aakashvani.

“In One-Day cricket, Rohit Sharma will continue to be the captain till the World Cup. But I think in the long term, in terms of India’s captaincy, it will be Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. These are my two candidates for India’s captaincy in the future," Chopra added.

While Rishabh Pant is currently out of the setup, getting treated for a road accident he suffered in December last year; Shubman Gill is enjoying his time out there – pilling up huge runs. Even in the recently-concluded New Zealand ODIs, the young right-handed batter scored his maiden double ton in the first game. He followed up with yet another century in the third ODI in Indore, and ended the three-match series with 360 runs to his name.

'Days of single captain are over now,' Aakash Chopra names his candidates for India captaincy in future

Former India opener-turned-commentator, Aakash Chopra has played down the new-looking Kiwi side ahead of the 1st T20I between India and New Zealand in Ranchi. Chopra said New Zealand, who remained the powerhouse in cricket across formats till some time back, isn’t the same anymore. His comments have come after India decimated New Zealand in the recently-concluded ODI series at home. Now with almost every big name rested for the three-match T20Is starting on Friday, the Kiwis will field a relatively newer side with lesser-known players. Commentating on the same on his YouTube channel, Chopra said he, much like others too, probably doesn’t know half of the people on the New Zealand team.

“The opposition team is very interesting. Firstly, Mitchell Santner is the captain. You and I probably don't know half the people in this team. They are no longer the powerful team they used to be,” Chopra said.

Adding further he said looking at the Kiwi team now he doesn’t get the feeling that they have the might they used to and that is where they look like a weaker unit. Claiming Devon Conway to be a threat for the Indians in Ranchi, Chopra said the way he scored a hundred in the final ODI, he could well be among the runs in the 1st T20I as well.

"It has become a slightly weaker unit. When you look at the New Zealand outfit, it seems the team does not have the might. Devon Conway scored a hundred in the last match and he might score a hundred here as well,” the ex-opener added.

"You will look towards Finn Allen once again in batting but his problem is that he gets out to left-armers. You will expect runs from Glenn Phillips and you will expect a big knock from Devon Conway,” said Chopra.

While India will miss the services of opener Ruturaj Gaikwad due to a wrist injury he endured recently, captain Pandya, ahead of the 1st T20I revealed that the team management plans to go ahead with Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill as openers in the first game; meaning the returning Prithvi Shaw will have to wait for his chance.

The first of the three T20Is will take place at the JSCA international stadium complex in Ranchi on Friday, January 27th. The match will be televised live on the Star Network on TV and on Hotstar online.

IND vs NZ 2023, 1st T20I: Ex-opener plays down Kiwis, says they aren't the powerhouse they used to be

India captain Rohit Sharma has come under the radar for his form and fitness after India’s T20 World Cup debacle in Australia this year. 35-year-old Rohit scored just one fifty throughout the event continuing his mediocre run of form in white ball cricket. Now post the T20 World Cup, a few of the senior players including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were rested for the New Zealand ODIs and T20Is, which raised questions over players' fitness and more importantly workload management.

Former India opener and now a full-time analyst and commentator, Aakash Chopra commented on the matter saying with the 50-over World Cup in sight players like Rohit Sharma should now take minimal leaves. He added the time for experimentation is over and that all players must concentrate on playing regular cricket. As far as taking leaves from international cricket is concerned, Aakash is of the firm opinion that if players need off, they can take it during the IPL and not while playing for India.

Responding to a similar query from a fan on his YouTube channel, Aakash said, "It's a very legit point. I feel the time for experimentation is over. So Rohit Sharma, because I think he is our captain for the 2023 World Cup, should take minimal breaks now. If you wish to take a break, take it in the IPL.

Even after the T20 World Cup got over, international cricket resumed in no time with England facing Australia in away ODIs while Sri Lanka facing Afghanistan in the 50-over format alongside India’s tour of New Zealand. However, apart from India’s Rohit Sharma, all teams were playing their full-strength side with their regular captains being part of the matches as well.

Continuing on the same, Aakash Chopra said, “If we see Sri Lanka, they are also currently playing against Afghanistan, Dasun Shanaka is still their captain. We saw England recently - Jos Buttler was their captain, Australia did a little back and forth, but Pat Cummins was the captain in two of the three matches.”

India is currently playing New Zealand in the ODI series, having already won the rain-hit T20Is 1-0.

In the ODIs, India is trailing 0-1 and will take on New Zealand in the second One-Dayer on Sunday at Seddon Park in Hamilton.

The stage is set for the India-Pakistan T20 World Cup 2022 edition clash, which will take place on October 23 at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Melbourne. The main draw of the tournament starts on October 22 whereas the qualifiers will get underway on October 16.

Hence, India and Pakistan will square off on the second day of the main draw and the clash is expected to go down to the wire. Both sides met in the 2021 T20 World Cup, in the UAE, where Babar Azam & Co. thrashed India by ten wickets as Pakistan defeated their arch-rivals in a World Cup match for the first time ever. After that, they met twice in the Asia Cup 2022 edition, with both teams getting a win each.

Prior to the T20 WC face-off, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra made a bold claim. He believes only one between India and Pakistan will make it to the semi-finals, along with South Africa from Pool B.

"Two teams out of India, Pakistan, and South Africa will go ahead. They (Pakistan) should reach the semi-finals, but it will not be easy. I am saying only one out of India and Pakistan will make it. Whoever wins the India-Pakistan match will make it. I feel South Africa will make it," Chopra said on his Youtube channel.

Whoever wins India-Pakistan match will enter T20 World Cup semi-finals, predicts Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra remains one of the most followed and active cricketers on Twitter. Chopra, who represented India in 10 Tests, has always been vocal on various aspects of the gentlemen's game and keeps sharing his opinions on several cricketing topics. After India's seven-wicket win over South Africa in their ongoing home ODIs, on Sunday (October 9), Chopra posted a video on the second and penultimate encounter.

Describing the entire match in a quirky video, Chopra was needlessly trolled by a Twitter user. "Please explain your career too. What is this? How can you talk about cricket? When you are a failed cricketer," the user tweeted. To this, the former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator gave him a befitting reply, shutting down the troll in style. 'Going by your logic...': Former Indian opener hits back at troll who termed him a 'failed cricketer'

India will be without Jasprit Bumrah in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 edition, in Australia, which kicks off on October 16 with the qualifying round. Rohit Sharma & Co. lost the services of Bumrah for the marquee tournament due to a back stress fracture.

It is to be noted that the 28-year-old Bumrah's back issues had kept him out of action for the Asia Cup 2022 edition as well. With the senior pacer out of action, the BCCI selection committee will have to name his replacement at the earliest, with Mohammed Shami and Deepak Chahar being the top-two contenders at the moment.

Amid all this, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra took to his official Twitter account and suggested the selectors to 'rethink about their strategy' and add two pacers following Bumrah's ouster.

"Boom( Bumrah) was India’s attacking option that might have allowed for having more defensive options in the squad. Now that he isn’t there, I would be surprised if the selectors/team-management didn’t have a serious rethink about their strategy…," wrote Chopra

"Bumrah missed the tour to WI and Asia Cup…and if Shami was indeed the best option to replace Bumrah (in case, he didn’t make it) then he should have been a part of the Asia Cup at the very least. India went with only 3 fast bowlers. And paid for it," he further opined.

"India must add two fast bowlers to the squad for the World Cup. One should be someone who has speed and he is Mohammad Shami. Now that he isn’t there, I would be surprised if the selectors/team-management didn’t have a serious rethink about their strategy…," wrote Chopra "Bumrah missed the tour to WI and Asia Cup…and if Shami was indeed the best option to replace Bumrah (in case, he didn’t make it) then he should have been a part of the Asia Cup at the very least. India went with only 3 fast bowlers. And paid for it," he further opined. Aakash Chopra urges BCCI selectors to rethink their strategy with no Jasprit Bumrah for T20 World Cup

India hosted South Africa in the three-match T20I series opener at Trivandrum on Wednesday evening (September 28). Opting to bowl first, India restricted Temba Bavuma & Co. for a paltry 106-8 in 20 overs with Arshdeep Singh (3 for 32), Deepak Chahar (2 for 24) and Harshal Patel (2 for 26) starring with the ball in tough batting conditions.

In reply, India lost skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for cheap and were tottering at 17 for 2 before an unbeaten 93-run third-wicket partnership between half-centurions KL Rahul (56-ball 51*) and Suryakumar Yadav (who remained not out on 50 off 33 balls) rescued India and took them past the finish line.

After the match, many trolled Rahul for his slow strike rate (91.07). In the recent past, including the IPL, Rahul's strike rate has been criticised but the team management has insisted that he is batting as per the role allotted to him (i.e. of an accumulator). Nonetheless, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra is baffled with the criticism and feels it is irrelevant keeping in mind the nature of the surface and India's poor start in pursuit of 107.

"People are just blasting Rahul for his knock, I can't understand why. If you are chasing only 107, and the conditions are difficult, why will the batter look to hit? It is okay to score ugly runs as well, it takes courage and guts," Chopra said on his Youtube channel.

Rohit Sharma-led India lost to Australia in the first of the three-match T20I series in Mohali, held at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium, on Tuesday evening (September 20). Being asked to bat first, Rohit & Co. rode on vice-captain KL Rahul's 55 and Hardik Pandya's 71 not out to post 208/6 but eventually came second with Australia chasing down the score in 19.2 overs, with four wickets in hand.

From Australia's perspective, Cameron Green's 61 and wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade's 21-ball 45 not out propelled them to register their record T20I run-chase versus the 2007 T20 champions, in front of a jam-packed stadium. After the contest, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra disapproved Rohit's 'ultra-attacking' approach with the bat.

'He's selling himself short' - Ex-India opener unimpressed with Rohit Sharma's 'ultra-attacking' approach

BCCI announced India's 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 edition, to be held in Australia from October-November. After a disappointing run in the Asia Cup, Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue will be desperate to make amends and finalise their team combination in their remaining T20Is -- versus the Aussies and South Africa at home -- before the showpiece event Down Under.

India's squad includes several future leaders such as KL Rahul (current vice-captain), Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah. Former Indian opener-turned-commentator made a bold claim on his Youtube channel and feels that Pant, who doesn't have great numbers in T20Is, can be India's future captain in the format.

Pant has so far amassed 934 runs in 58 matches, at 23.94 and a strike rate of over 126. He often invites criticism for his shot selection and not being consistent with the willow. With Dinesh Karthik's comeback, the youngster is also facing the heat to regularly feature in the T20I line-up due to the veteran's finishing skills. However, Chopra feels a bright future is ahead of Pant.

"I feel the future will be great. He might become the Indian captain in T20 cricket going forward. He will be that maverick people will be scared of. He will play in a bold fashion," an upbeat Chopra said.

"But at this point in time, the truth is that he is still figuring out whether he should do this or that, whether he should hit or play cautiously, whether he will get dropped if he gets out while trying to hit," the former batter further asserted.

"He has done all of that, but this happens when you are young and extremely talented, and the expectation is that the guy will come and hit. So at times, he feels obliged that he has to hit but gets out while doing that. So it is a big problem," Chopra added.

Pant has led India in T20Is during the home series versus South Africa in early June. The series ended in a 2-2 stalemate. It will be interesting to see if he becomes the next T20I captain, succeeding Rohit.

He might become India's T20I captain: Aakash Chopra's big prediction on star player

BCCI named India's 15-man squad, along with a 4-man reserve list, for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 edition, to be held in Australia from October-November. The Rohit Sharma-led Indian squad saw the return of Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel as the two pacers recovered from their respective injuries and made the final cut.

In the reserve list, the likes of Md Shami, Ravi Bishnoi, Deepak Chahar and Shreyas Iyer were roped in. The main squad primarily features the players who featured in the Asia Cup -- where India failed to make it to the final -- and, thus, many former cricketers and experts of the game have shared their take on India's line-up.

Aakash Chopra, former Indian opener-turned-commentator-cum-expert, also joined the bandwagon and feels Yuzvendra Chahal is the only 'legit wicket-taking option'.

"You have picked three spinners - an offspinner, a legspinner and a left-arm spinner. So you have picked different-different options but Yuzi Chahal is the only legit wicket-taking option in T20 cricket," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Chopra further opined, "The others are defensive options - make no mistake, that is the truth. You can see the numbers for the last 12 months, IPL included for both of them - Axar and Ravichandran Ashwin. Being disappointed with Bishnoi's omission from the main squad, he stated, "Ravi Bishnoi was a tempting option available to you. You are not thinking about Kuldeep at all, which is slightly disappointing, but he could also have been a wicket-taking option. But you didn't think about either of them."

Arshdeep Singh made heads turn for all the wrong reasons during the India-Pakistan Super Four clash in the ongoing Asia Cup, in the UAE. When both sides once again locked horns in the mega tournament, the young pacer didn't return with an expensive spell in the high-scoring contest but dropped a sitter in the 18th over of Men in Green's riveting run-chase of finisher Asif Ali. “Anyone can commit mistakes under pressure. It was a big game, and the situation was a bit tight,” Kohli pointed out at the post-match presser. “I remember when I was playing my first Champions Trophy game against Pakistan, and I played a very poor shot off Shahid Afridi’s bowling. Kohli further added, "That’s a natural feeling. But there are senior players around you. We’ll come together again for the next game. So, it’s all about learning in a good environment and when a similar situation arrives again, you look forward to it and be ready."

India will now face Sri Lanka (September 06) and Afghanistan (September 08) in their remaining games in the Super Four and hope to qualify for the tournament final after a setback received from Pakistan.

Kohli further added, "That’s a natural feeling. But there are senior players around you. We’ll come together again for the next game. So, it’s all about learning in a good environment and when a similar situation arrives again, you look forward to it and be ready." India will now face Sri Lanka (September 06) and Afghanistan (September 08) in their remaining games in the Super Four and hope to qualify for the tournament final after a setback received from Pakistan.

Aakash Chopra's heartfelt gesture for under-fire Arshdeep Singh wins hearts as India go down to Pakistan

Rishabh Pant's omission from India's playing XI for their Asia Cup opening clash versus Pakistan made heads turn. Not many would've expected Pant to be left out -- given his rise at the highest level in recent times -- despite Dinesh Karthik also doing well as a finisher in the shortest format.

Rohit Sharma-led India, however, pulled off a suprise by going ahead with Karthik for the Pakistan clash. Opting to bowl first in Dubai, India dismissed Pakistan for 147 in 19.5 overs and later chased it down in the last over courtesy of Virat Kohli's 34-ball 35, Ravindra Jadeja's 29-ball 35 (who came to bat at No. 4) and Hardik's 17-ball 33 not out (along with his three scalps) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.

Rishabh Pant or Dinesh Karthik? Aakash Chopra shares his pick for India's Asia Cup clash vs Hong Kong

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra recently compared the captaincy styles of Virat Kohli and current Team India skipper Rohit Sharma. Rohit took over from Virat in T20Is soon after his resignation post the 2021 T20 World Cup, took over as ODI captain post his predecessor Kohli's sacking and was also named the Test captain early this year, after Virat gave up captaincy duties altogether.

Since then, Rohit-led India have done well in the limited-overs format and are gearing up for the 2022 Asia Cup, which will be followed by the T20 World Cup in October-November in Australia. Under Kohli, India did achieve a lot of success across formats -- despite not winning an ICC title -- and were an aggressive unit. However, Chopra made an interesting claim by saying that players under Rohit are far from attacking in their approach.

"Virat Kohli's big focus was - 'I want to do this.' It was a lot about wanting to set an example. Virat Kohli was very very aggressive on the field, in your face, never taking a backward step, but the team was not that aggressive under Virat Kohli," Chopra said on his Youtube channel. "That's a very interesting bit that he was himself very aggressive but the team was not aggressive. There could be multiple reasons for that. He talked about intent many times but we saw [Cheteshwar] Pujara getting run out twice in one match. So the 'intent' word was perhaps not understood correctly," he added.

Meanwhile, Chopra opined that Rohit might not seem to be that aggressive and animated, however, the team plays with a lot of freedom and aggression in his leadership. "Rohit Sharma is a very interesting character as a captain. The one thing I like about him a lot is that when you meet Rohit Sharma or see him on the ground, he doesn't look animated but the team that plays under him attacks," Chopra opined.

"We have seen that they play with freedom or you can say aggression. The main reason for that is he gives confidence to the team, that they have made a philosophy, they will play according to that, and that he is standing behind the players and will not let them get dropped," he further asserted.

Team India wasn't aggressive under Kohli, but players attack under Rohit's captaincy, feels Aakash Chopra

Ahead of India's departure for their tour of Zimbabwe, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that KL Rahul will also be part of the trip to the African nation. Rahul, who last played an international match in early 2022, has recovered from sports hernia surgery and Covid-19 and has also been named the captain, replacing Shikhar Dhawan.

This decision hasn't impressed many former Indian cricketers. Aakash Chopra, the former Indian opener-turned-commentator-cum-expert, has now joined the bandwagon and feels that the change in leadership could have been avoided.

"If it was in my hands, I would have avoided that. He (Rahul) was originally not named in the squad for Zimbabwe series," Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

"I understand he is the vice-captain for the Asia Cup but there is another truth, that currently there are 8-10 captains in the team. Rishabh Pant is captain, Hardik Pandya is captain, and I do not think Suryakumar is far away from captaincy. Rohit Sharma is the captain, Virat Kohli has been the captain before. It was not important, this thing could have been avoided," Chopra further opined.

Dhawan had led Rohit Sharma-less India during the three ODIs versus West Indies, in the Caribbean island, whereas Rahul was then out of action after contracting Covid-19 infection. It will be interesting to see how Rahul performs as captain and batter in the Zimbabwe tour ahead of the Asia Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup, in Australia.

'It could've been avoided': Aakash Chopra on Rahul replacing Dhawan as India captain for Zimbabwe tour

Virat Kohli, who was rested for the white-ball tour of West Indies, is all set to return to action for Team India during the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition. The upcoming showpiece event will be held in the UAE, with Sri Lanka as hosts, and will be played in the shortest format -- for the second time in the tournament history -- as a dress rehearsal for the 2022 T20 World Cup (from October-November).

The Indian cricket loyalists will be desperate to see Kohli return to form, who has been struggling for quite a while. He didn't score a single half-century in the England tour, had an ordinary run in IPL 2022 and his century-drought continues since late 2019. However, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra feels Kohli will benefit from India's new-found aggressive batting approach in T20Is.

"Doesn’t matter if he (Kohli) scores a 40 or 70 because everybody has a role to play. There’s synergy in every player; regardless of the position he bats at, you are just going hell for leather. If that’s the mindset, then it’s going to be a lot easier for Kohli," said Chopra on Star Sports.

"It’s the perfect set-up. The kind of cricket India is playing at the moment, the team doesn’t expect Kohli to score 70 or a 100 or finish the game. You just come and play your game, that’s more than enough," added Chopra.

'You are just going hell...' - Aakash Chopra explains how Virat Kohli will benefit from India's new approach

Axar Patel was the Player-of-the-Match as Shikhar Dhawan-led Team India came from behind to beat West Indies in the second and penultimate ODI to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the second and penultimate match, on Sunday (July 24).

Chasing 312, after hosts opted to bat first, India were in a spot of bother. From 48 for no loss, Dhawan & Co. were 79/3 before Sanju Samson (54) - Shreyas Iyer (63)'s 99-run fourth-wicket stand kept India in the hunt. Losing Samson, Iyer, Deepak Hooda and Shardul Thakur, the onus fell on all-rounder Axar, who had to bat deep with the tailenders to take the visitors home.

Axar (who had also claimed a wicket in the match) was up for the challenge and his career-best 64-run unbeaten knock stunned the Nicholas Pooran-led West Indies as India chased down the target in the last over, with two balls to spare, by two wickets. Here's the spin-bowling all-rounder's classy knock, off just 35 balls which comprised 5 sixes and 3 fours:

Relive Axar Patel's 64* as India take unassailable lead over West Indies with 2nd ODI win - WATCH

Indian batter Shreyas Iyer continued his purple patch with the willow in the second ODI against West Indies at the Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad on Sunday (July 24). Iyer slammed a brilliant knock of 63 runs off 71 balls to help India beat West Indies by two wickets in the second ODI and clinch the three-match series with an unassailable lead of 2-0.

Ahead of the start of the ODI series against West Indies, there were questions raised over Iyer's spot in India's white-ball squad and his glaring weakness against short balls. However, he has managed to spark a turnaround in the ongoing ODI series against West Indies with back-to-back fifties in the first two matches.

After scoring 54 off 57 balls in the series-opener against West Indies at the same venue, Iyer followed it up with a brilliant 63-run-knock under pressure in the second ODI. He came out to bat at number three and steered India out of trouble when the visitors were reeling at 79/3 inside 18 overs in the 312-run chase.

Iyer combined with Sanju Samson (54) to add 99 runs for the fourth wicket and take India closer to victory. Axar Patel then took India over the line in the final over with a cracking unbeaten 64 off 35 balls. With the win, India sealed the series and recorded their 12th straight ODI series win against West Indies.

"The short-ball problem, T20s and Test matches, let's not talk about that. He has been ruling the roost in this format. I remember his Hamilton ton as well. He is also asking the question that once everyone is available, how will you keep him out," he added.

He is becoming a giant in ODIs: Former India batter lauds Shreyas Iyer after his terrific knock vs West Indies

Rohit Sharma-led India ended a very successful tour of England on Sunday (July 17). After India lost a golden opportunity to win the rescheduled fifth and final Test, from 2021, versus Ben Stokes-led England, the visitors turned it around in the white-ball leg, beating Jos Buttler & Co. in T20Is as well as in ODIs (by 2-1 margin).

While the T20Is was easily pocketed by India, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead before losing the finale by 17 runs, the 50-over series lived upto expectations and went to the final ODI with the scoreline 1-1. In the third and final match, India dismissed England for 259 in 45.5 overs -- riding on Hardik Pandya's 4/24 -- before Hardik's 71 (55) and Rishabh Pant's 125 not out rescued India from 72/4 to take them to a stunning five-wicket series win in the tour finale.

After the end of the England tour, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra picked India's most valuable white-ball player. The white-ball sides comprises several stars such as Rohit, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Pant, Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja Hardik, etc., however, Chopra picked the latter.

"Hardik Pandya - he has been absolutely stellar. One thing is getting proved that he is India's most valuable player in white-ball cricket. I don't think there is going to be anyone who is going to come close to him," Chopra said on his Youtube channel.

"If Hardik Pandya is fit, his replacement is not available. You will get many spin-bowling all-rounders in India, you get them easily, in different formats, but you don't get a fast-bowling all-rounder at all, it is not possible at all," Chopra added.

Hardik has been in sensational form since his return to competitive cricket, starting from IPL 2022. In the 15th IPL season, he led debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) to the mega title, with 487 runs and eight scalps overall, contributed with the bat in the home T20Is versus South Africa, led India for the first time during their 2-0 series whitewash over Ireland in the shortest format, in Dublin, won the Player-of-the-Match in the India-England first T20I and ended as the Player-of-the-Series in the ODis versus the Three Lions.

Not Jasprit Bumrah or Rishabh Pant! Aakash Chopra picks Team India's most valuable white-ball player

Former India cricketer and popular commentator Aakash Chopra has raised questions over Team India's selection policy after senior spinner R Ashwin returned to the visitors' limited-overs squad for the upcoming series against West Indies. Ashwin has made his comeback to India's T20I squad and will be hoping to impress the selectors ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 this year.

Ashwin had earlier made a surprising comeback in India's T20I squad for T20 World Cup 2022 after a long gap of four years. The senior spinner did feature in a handful of matches at the World Cup before being sidelined again. He will now make his comeback in T20Is against West Indies later this month.

India will play 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is against West Indies from July to August and have named a strong squad despite a number of senior players missing the series. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is not part of the T20I squad and in his absence, Ashwin is expected to be India's first-choice spinner.

Cricketer turned commentator Chopra is not quite impressed with Ashwin's selection in India's T20I squad and has questioned the logic behind his comeback. Chopra questioned why Ashwin was sidelined from T20Is post the T20 World Cup last year and why has he returned to the squad now?

"Ravichandran Ashwin is back, that's an interesting one. What is the long-term perspective? Why was he not there in the team for the last 8-10 months? Why was he totally sidelined after the World Cup and why has he come back now?" Chopra said in a video on his youtube channel.

"Actually he did play five matches (including three at the World Cup), he did well but after that, he has not got too many chances. Then you should have played him against Sri Lanka and South Africa as well. You didn't play him in the T20Is in England as well although he was there in England, you could have played him," he added.

He also made his ODI comeback on the South Africa tour earlier this year where he played two ODIs before being dropped and has since failed to make his comeback for India in white-ball cricket.

Ashwin will be hoping to make an impact with the ball in the T20I series against West Indie which remains his last hope to make the cut into India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia later this year.

Umran Maik has been fast-tracked into the Indian team after his exploits for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) but has failed to impress in a few opportunities that he has managed to get for Team India so far. Umran was included in India's squad for the South Africa T20I series at home following the conclusion of IPL 2022 but failed to get a game.

He made his dream debut for India in the first T20I against Ireland in Dublin last month and played both games in the series. The pace sensation was also part of India's playing in the 3rd T20I of the recently-concluded three-match T20I series against England.

In the three T20Is he has played for India so far, Umran has conceded 129 runs while managing 4 wickets. In the third T20I against England, he was taken to the cleaners by the host batters in Nottingham and ended up conceding 56 runs off his 4 overs in the game.

Speaking about Umran's poor show with the ball in his first few games for India, former India opener Aakash Chopra said the young pacer is still not ready for international cricket despite being an outstanding talent. Umran is India's quickest bowler at present and has the ability to consistently clock over 150 kmph.

However, he is still not a finished product and has several areas to work on and improve before he can be a regular feature in the Indian playing XI. Chopra believes Umran has something which is a rare commodity - pace but needs time to get to the level where he can play for India regularly.

"Umran Malik has something that others don’t have extreme pace. You can’t teach that to anyone. You can teach everything else line and length, yorker, bouncer, slower ones. But you can’t teach someone how to bowl with speed. You are either born a pacer or born a medium-pacer,” said Chopra speaking in a video on his YouTube channel.

“No doubt, he has the pace. But what I feel is that Umran Malik is not ready for international cricket as of now. It is very simple, he needs time. He hasn’t played a lot of cricket and so he is still raw,” he added.

Rohit Sharma-led India missed a golden opportunity to inflict a series whitewash over England in the three T20Is. After taking an unassailable 2-0 lead versus Jos Buttler & Co., Rohit-led India aimed for a 3-0 scoreline but lost the final encounter by 17 runs despite Suryakumar Yadav's magnificent 117.

In pursuit of a mammoth 216-run chase, India fell short and were restricted for 198-8. After the clash, former Indian opener-turned-expert Aakash Chopra lashed out at Indian team management's selection for the final encounter, where Shreyas Iyer was given a chance and in-form batter Deepak Hooda continued to warm the bench. For the unversed, Hooda has scored a hundred during the Ireland T20Is and scored a quickire 17-ball 33 in the England series opener before other players were preferred over him.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "I was saying - don't make any change, go with the same team. What difference does it make? But that did not happen. What I found slightly baffling is that I understand that Shreyas Iyer is probably ahead of Deepak Hooda in the pecking order, although I am not ready to agree that he is ahead in the pecking order."

"Why he is ahead, I have got no idea. I feel Deepak Hooda should be slightly ahead in this list. If you were resting Hardik Pandya, then why not Deepak Hooda? There was a chance to play him which you have missed."

While Iyer was involved in a 119-run fourth-wicket stand with centurion SKY, he didn't have the best of outing as the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain returned with a 23-ball 28 in a tall run-chase. It will be interesting to see if Iyer continues to good a run in the T20I line-up or the team management accomodates Hooda in place of one of the middle-order batters.

Joe Root has been enjoying a stellar run with the bat in Test cricket for England. The former England skipper has been in tremendous form and has been piling on runs for fun in the whites. He has been incredibly consistent over the last couple of years and has already breached the 10,000 run-mark in the longest format.

After helping England register a dominant Test series win over New Zealand at home, Root continued his sublime form in the recently-concluded one-off fifth Test against India at Edgbaston. The former England skipper slammed an unbeaten century in the second innings to help his team pull off their highest-ever run-chase in Test cricket and thrash India by seven wickets.

He also surpassed the likes of Ricky Ponting and Viv Richards among others to achieve the elusive feat of scoring most Test centuries against India. He now has nine tons against India which is the most by any batter in Test cricket. Former India opener Aakash Chopra recently lauded Root for his consistency.

Chopra said Root is no more the part of 'Fab 4' but is already better than the remaining trio of Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson as far as Test cricket is considered. The term 'Fab 4' was coined for Kohli, Root, Williamson and Smith as the top four batters in the world in the present era.

"We used to feel he isn't a part of the 'Fab 4' and I still feel so, because now he is beyond them. The audacity to hit Trent Boult and Shardul Thakur for reverse sweeps shows that he has all the shots," he added.

Virat Kohli's century-drought remains a talking point in the cricketing fraternity. It isn't an unknown fact that the 33-year-old former skipper's last international hundred came in late 2019, in the pre-Covid era. Since then, the right-hander has crossed the fifty-run mark on several occasions, especially in shorter formats, but hasn't touched the triple-figure mark.

Ahead of the fifth and final Test between India and England -- which is part of the incomplete five-match series held last year in England -- former Indian opener Aakash Chopra opined whether Kohli will be able to break his century jinx during the series decider, which got underway on Friday (July 01) in Edgbaston, Birmingham.

"Kohli and Pant together will score more than 120 runs. The big question is will Kohli finally get his 71st hundred in this game? I don't think so. Although he got his first Test hundred in England on this ground, I doubt whether he will get a hundred this time. But he and Pant will still be among the runs," the former India batter said on his YouTube channel.

Will Virat Kohli end his century-drought in one-off Test vs England? Former Indian opener gives his verdict

Umran Malik finally made his debut for Team India in the just-concluded Ireland T20I series, held at The Village, Dublin. The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pacer, who ended IPL 2022 with 22 scalps, was handed his maiden India cap during the series opener, however, he bowled only a solitary over, conceding 14 runs.

Many were hoping for Umran to retain his place in the playing XI when India locked horns with Ireland in the second and final T20I, on Tuesday evening (June 28), with an unassailable 1-0 lead in their kitty. Much to many's delight, Umran was part of the XI and bowled his full quota of overs, returning with 4-0-42-1 (including two no-balls). However, the 22-year-old speedster, from Jammu & Kashmir, defended 16 runs overs in the final over of the run-fest, to give away 12 and take India to a 4-run win in defence of a mammoth 225/7. After the clash, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra opined on whether Umran is fit for international level or he still needs more time.

In a video shared on his Youtube channel, Chopra said, "How ready is Umran is a question. You went with Umran Malik for the last over. Umran Malik has the pace but no one is scared of 140-145 at this level. You still feel that you can scare away people in the IPL but that does not happen here."

'How ready is Umran Malik?' - Former India opener opines on pacer's preparedness at the top level

Hardik Pandya-led India locked horns with Ireland in the second and final T20I on Tuesday evening (June 28), at The Village, Dublin. With an unassailable lead, India aimed for a whitewash and opted to bat first. On a batting-friendly track, Deepak Hooda's 104 and Sanju Samson's 42-ball 77 propelled India to a mammoth 225/7 before the visitors defended the total by four runs to win the series 2-0, despite Andrew Balbirnie & Co.'s spirited fight.

During the Indian innings, Samson and Hooda got together at 13/1 and their 176-run second-wicket stand, highest partnership for India for any wicket in the shortest format, made heads turn. Both batters entertained the crowd with their strokeplay as Hooda slammed his maiden ton whereas Samson scored his first-ever fifty for India. Thus, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra heaped praise on Samson while reviewing the second and final encounter and termed him in Rohit Sharma's category.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "Sanju got an opportunity and he shone. When he bats, he plays very well. That's the thing with Sanju Samson - I have never seen him bat ugly. He is a player who belongs to Rohit Sharma's category, who whenever he plays, plays extremely beautifully, scores runs in a free-flowing manner and controls the match very well."

"Sanju's fans are there in Malahide as well because as soon as Hardik Pandya said at the toss that Sanju is playing, it erupted, it was an extremely beautiful moment for Sanju Samson as well, he got an opportunity to play as an opener," he added.

"He has also put his name in the list, another wicketkeeper-batter. I think it's going to be a huge huge headache. Well done Sanju, when you see Sanju you observe the talent but performance is more important than potential. Converting potential to performance is the tough art and he showed it by doing it," he concluded.

Samson remains in India's scheme of things ahead of the 2022 T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia later this year. It will be tough for him to earn a spot, however, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper has made a mark courtesy of his splendid knock versus Ireland.

Hardik Pandya-led India were off to a winning start in the first T20I versus Ireland at The Village, Dublin on Sunday evening (June 26). After opting to bowl first, Hardik & Co. got early scalps but were asked to chase 109 in a rain-curtailed 12-over contest, which they won by seven wickets courtesy of Deepak Hooda's 47 and captain Hardik's blitz.

During the Ireland innings, Dinesh Karthik was the No. 1 wicketkeeping choice despite the squad comprising Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson. Thus with DK keeping wickets, in Rishabh Pant's absence, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has made a big statement. 'He's your primary keeping option if Pant is unavailable' - Aakash Chopra makes big claim on Dinesh Karthik

Comeback man Dinesh Karthik returned to the Team India setup after a three-year hiatus during the recently-concluded India-South Africa home T20Is. In the five-match series, DK performed well -- with a 21-ball 30 not out and 55 in the second and fourth match respectively -- to strengthen his case to feature in Rohit Sharma-led India's 2022 T20 World Cup squad.

After the end of the five-match series, which ended in a 2-2 scoreline after the series finale was abandoned due to rain in Bengaluru on Sunday (June 19), former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra picked DK as one of the star performers (along with Player-of-the-Series Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ishan Kishan) for the host nation. He also lauded DK for his longevity, stating that he has even outlived MS Dhoni's career span.

"At No. 3, I have kept Karthik. Batting is very difficult at the number he bats. The way he has played, he has been brilliant. It has been a very long career (debuting in 2004), Dhoni's entire international career got over in between but DK is still there," Chopra said.

"The hunger is coming to the fore, the game plan, just the clarity about how he is going to play. He plays slightly in an unorthodox fashion but that is what is required to be done in the death overs. A specialist death batter is a very difficult role, there is no other role more difficult than this in the world," Chopra added.

For the majority of his career, DK was in the shadow of Dhoni, who excelled as India's finisher, astute captain, and wise keeper. After Dhoni's retirement, Rishabh Pant has broken into the scene, however, the swashbuckling left-hander hasn't been that successful in white-ball formats, so far, as compared to Tests. Hence, DK is still giving tough competition to the 24-year-old and is focused on representing India in the 2022 T20 WC, to be held Down Under.

The 37-year-old Karthik will now shift his focus to the two-match T20I series between India and Ireland, in Dublin, on June 26 and 28.

'MS Dhoni's international career got over but....' - Aakash Chopra lauds Dinesh Karthik after SA T20Is

On Wednesday evening (June 15), the BCCI selection committee announced a 17-member Team India squad for the forthcoming two T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin. With regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and many other white-ball regulars to be in England to prepare for the one-off Test, Hardik Pandya has been named as the Indian captain for the Ireland series.

Hardik will, thus, get a chance to lead India for the first time ever. In IPL 2022, the talented all-rounder had led the debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) to their maiden championship and led with example with both bat and ball, ending with 487 runs and eight wickets (three of them coming in the final). Thus, a lot is expected from Hardik the captain, who will have Bhuvneshwar Kumar as his deputy for the Ireland tour.

While Hardik hasn't led India when compared to some other youngsters such as KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, he has operated in a much better wat than them during IPL 15. Hence, a lot is expected of him.

India vs Ireland T20Is: 'He's most matured captain from younger lot' - Aakash Chopra on Hardik Pandya

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator feels that nobody really remembers the 50-over matches anymore and called for changes to be made in the ODI format. Before him, ex-Indian team head coach Ravi Shastri had called up for the discontinuation of T20I matches and restricting the format to only World Cups. Now, Chopra feels it is the shorter format which is 'most boring contest and meaningless'.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, the 44-year-old cricket expert Chopra pointed out, "If you see the interest levels, keeping the Tests aside as everything is not commercialization, I feel ODI cricket is the most boring contest. It is the most meaningless, it is the format that no one remembers."

"It is the format where neither the broadcasters nor the fans enjoy it. That's ODI cricket and there are multiple reasons for that. In 50-over cricket, the 30 overs in the middle are neither a Test nor a T20. ODI is not a format that is going to keep you engaged for too long," he opined.

Chopra further added, "I think ODI cricket is struggling. It is not T20I cricket that is struggling. Let the T20 internationals continue because the broadcasters will need them, or else they won't give you the money. Every country's broadcast rights will take a major hit."

Ever since the T20 cricket rose to prominence, it has affected both Test and ODI format. While a lot is being done to keep the purest format relevant in current times, with the introduction of a WTC, and many Test series have lived upto expectations as well recently -- with less number of draws -- ODI cricket has taken a hit, especially when it comes to bilaterals involving lowly-ranked sides.

Tests, ODIs or T20Is? Former Indian opener picks the format which is 'most boring and meaningless'

Virat Kohli had a dreadful run in IPL 2022 edition. The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)'s former skipper was expected to go bonkers with the bat in the 15th season after having relinquished captaincy duty for the franchise, in last year, but the 33-year-old fell flat and was nowhere close to his own high standards.

Kohli returned with 341 runs in 16 games, at an average of 22.73 and a below-par strike rate of 115.98. The right-hander scored two half-centuries, against eventual winners Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT), but wasn't anywhere near his best in majority of the outings. Even his 53-ball 58 in RCB's first face-off versus GT wasn't very impressive.

Analysing Kohli's season for RCB, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra said, "The main points were that the top three batters just failed to perform. If you see Virat Kohli's year, Virat Kohli was not Virat Kohli. 16 matches, 341 runs at a strike rate of 115. You might have said it is fine even with 341 runs if the strike rate had been around 140."

"Only two half-centuries, that too against just one side. Other than that, he hasn't scored any runs. He reached 48 once and scored an unbeaten 40-odd in the first match but very ordinary season by his standards and by any standards," he said in a video posted on YouTube.

Further, Chopra shifted focus on Glenn Maxwell and skipper Faf du Plessis and said, "Glenn Maxwell, on whom you placed a huge bet, 301 runs in 13 matches, it is slightly underperforming but the strike rate is very high, more than 160. He picked up wickets in bowling as well, takes catches as well. But one thing is that if Virat Kohli is not having a gun season, Maxi needs to have an extremely gun season, which didn't happen."

"Faf du Plessis - 468 runs in 16 matches. He has the runs, 468 runs are great but this is a team without a single 500-plus score. You might say Gujarat also do not have that but there were three players above 400 there and their main thing was the bowling," added the cricketer-turned-pundit.

RCB finished the league stage at the fourth spot and won the Eliminator, beating Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), before bowing out after defeat to eventual runners-up Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Qualifier 2.

You might have said it is fine even with 341 runs if the strike rate had been around 140." "Only two half-centuries, that too against just one side. Other than that, he hasn't scored any runs. He reached 48 once and scored an unbeaten 40-odd in the first match but very ordinary season by his standards and by any standards," he said in a video posted on YouTube. He picked up wickets in bowling as well, takes catches as well. But one thing is that if Virat Kohli is not having a gun season, Maxi needs to have an extremely gun season, which didn't happen." "Faf du Plessis - 468 runs in 16 matches.

Virat Kohli was not Virat Kohli: Aakash Chopra analyses RCB star's ordinary run in IPL 2022

The IPL 2022 edition ended on May 29 (Sunday). There were plenty of memorable performances by uncapped players, veteran stars whereas some big names failed to get going and fell flat. The likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Kieron Pollard, Glenn Maxwell and many other superstar cricketers failed to live upto expectations and had an ordinary run.

Thus, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra picked Team India's T20 World Cup squad, for the mega event set to be held in Australia later this year, on the basis of Indian players' IPL 2022 performance. While Chopra named Hardik Pandya -- IPL 15's winning captain -- as India's skipper, he dropped Virat, Rohit, Rishabh Pant and Jadeja.

"The first name I am keeping is KL Rahul. He can play till 15-17 overs, he is a T20 gun batter and scored more than 600 runs this year. I have kept Ishan Kishan along with him. If you see his numbers, you will say it was not that bad a season for Ishan Kishan."

"At No. 3, I have kept Rahul Tripathi. He played very well this, strike rate has been very high and given match-winning performances. At No. 4, I have kept SKY. He has not played all the games but he has played at a different level in the matches he played," Chopra said on his Youtube channel.

He added, "After that, my Player of the Tournament. I have made Hardik Pandya the captain of the team. He can play in the middle and be a finisher as well. After that, I have given a spot to Dinesh Karthik and he is my wicketkeeper as well. He has run at a strike rate of 180-190 and finished a lot of matches."

"At No. 7, I have kept Krunal Pandya because he has had a very good season. He has been very economical as a bowler and scored crucial runs as a batter. He can bat up and down the order. You require a left-hander in the middle."

"After that, Yuzi Chahal has to be in my side. Then I have three fast bowlers and the fourth fast bowler is Hardik Pandya - Mohammed Shami, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh. I am seeing this as the XI," Chopra opined further.
