Countdown Begins: ICC, CSA to release 2027 ODI World Cup schedule on October 1 - Report

After announcing that the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/virat-kohli-confirms-2027-odi-world-cup-last-tournament-for-india-1790412961801">2027 ODI World Cup will be his last tournament for India</a>, veteran batter Virat Kohli outlined the ideal scenario for the showpiece event in Africa in 2027. Kohli was instrumental in India’s 2011 World Cup triumph at home, and 16 years on, he wants to cap off his decorated international career with another title. With India set to begin its quest for cricket’s grandest event with the home ODI series against the West Indies on Sunday (Sep 27), Kohli reveals his plans, painting the perfect picture.&nbsp;Drawing parallels with his maiden IPL win in 2025 for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Kohli explained how, when he had not won an IPL title, he used to dream about doing it; similarly, having lost the 2023 ODI World Cup final to Australia in Ahmedabad three years ago, Kohli wants to make amends and pull off match-winning knocks in the knockouts of the 2027 World Cup.&nbsp;"Before we [Royal Challengers Bengaluru] won the IPL in 2025, I used to get flashbacks of the 2016 final [which they lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad]. I feel the same about the World Cup final as well," Kohli said in a chat on JioStar.&nbsp;"I was playing on 54 and had set myself up for a big hundred; like, if I got 140-150, we would be in a great position to win that game, because you're getting 300-plus in a big final, and with our bowling, we will get them. But as soon as I played on [to Pat Cummins], it was very tough to process for many days. And you keep thinking about it,” he continued.&nbsp; Also read| <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/rohit-sharma-sets-sights-on-2027-odi-world-cup-business-not-finished-1790414881759">‘Business is not finished’: Rohit Sharma sets sights on 2027 ODI World Cup</a>&nbsp;Sharing his thoughts on the last ODI World Cup at home, where India were the frontrunners for the title, Kohli said the whole environment was phenomenal. Kohli added that the camaraderie inside the dressing room was commendable, and that unit looked poised to taste ultimate success, only to fall at the final hurdle.&nbsp;"That whole World Cup was great; the environment was phenomenal. Within the team, you could see the camaraderie; everyone was happy playing for each other. Even losing someone like Hardik [Pandya] early on [to injury], we never spoke about what would happen next, although it was a big loss in terms of what he brings. But [Mohammed] Shami came and tap-tap-tap [to indicate picking up wickets] - you know what he can do. So, everyone had a feeling that it was our World Cup. There was a different energy altogether, and then when the game shifts like that, it's very difficult to process,” he continued.<h2>Winning Final Knock is Ultimate Goal: Kohli</h2>Having finished countless matches in winning causes of his own, Kohli wants to do it on the biggest stage, when it matters the most.&nbsp;"I've always been someone who, every game that we play, I want to be the guy who wins us the game - so that's never going to go away from me. I am made that way. So, my goal [at the World Cup] is to win as many games as I can for the team - 60-70% of the games would be phenomenal. My dream is to play a match-winning, finishing knock in the finals, like chasing a score. That's the ideal scenario. If it happens, great. If it doesn't happen, we win the World Cup, I'll be as happy.&nbsp;"It's the last time you're getting to play a World Cup. So just getting that trophy is the most important thing. If I have the opportunity to do it as an individual, staying there out in the middle, there's nothing more satisfying as a batsman. That drives us - to be the guy who makes an impact. Situation difficult; you visualise yourself pulling the team out of trouble. And that's what makes you compete. So, I don't want to let go of that competitiveness,” he continued.

Virat Kohli outlines his dream for the 2027 ODI World Cup, targeting a match-winning knock in the final to cap off his decorated international career for India.

After announcing that the 2027 ODI World Cup will be his last tournament for India, veteran batter Virat Kohli outlined the ideal scenario for the showpiece event in Africa in 2027. Kohli was instrumental in India’s 2011 World Cup triumph at home, and 16 years on, he wants to cap off his decorated international career with another title. With India set to begin its quest for cricket’s grandest event with the home ODI series against the West Indies on Sunday (Sep 27), Kohli reveals his plans, painting the perfect picture. Drawing parallels with his maiden IPL win in 2025 for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Kohli explained how, when he had not won an IPL title, he used to dream about doing it; similarly, having lost the 2023 ODI World Cup final to Australia in Ahmedabad three years ago, Kohli wants to make amends and pull off match-winning knocks in the knockouts of the 2027 World Cup. "Before we [Royal Challengers Bengaluru] won the IPL in 2025, I used to get flashbacks of the 2016 final [which they lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad]. I feel the same about the World Cup final as well," Kohli said in a chat on JioStar. "I was playing on 54 and had set myself up for a big hundred; like, if I got 140-150, we would be in a great position to win that game, because you're getting 300-plus in a big final, and with our bowling, we will get them. But as soon as I played on [to Pat Cummins], it was very tough to process for many days. And you keep thinking about it,” he continued. Also read| ‘Business is not finished’: Rohit Sharma sets sights on 2027 ODI World Cup Sharing his thoughts on the last ODI World Cup at home, where India were the frontrunners for the title, Kohli said the whole environment was phenomenal. Kohli added that the camaraderie inside the dressing room was commendable, and that unit looked poised to taste ultimate success, only to fall at the final hurdle. "That whole World Cup was great; the environment was phenomenal. There was a different energy altogether, and then when the game shifts like that, it's very difficult to process,” he continued. Winning Final Knock is Ultimate Goal: Kohli Having finished countless matches in winning causes of his own, Kohli wants to do it on the biggest stage, when it matters the most. "I've always been someone who, every game that we play, I want to be the guy who wins us the game - so that's never going to go away from me. I am made that way. So, my goal [at the World Cup] is to win as many games as I can for the team - 60-70% of the games would be phenomenal. My dream is to play a match-winning, finishing knock in the finals, like chasing a score. That's the ideal scenario. If it happens, great. If it doesn't happen, we win the World Cup, I'll be as happy. "It's the last time you're getting to play a World Cup. So just getting that trophy is the most important thing. If I have the opportunity to do it as an individual, staying there out in the middle, there's nothing more satisfying as a batsman. That drives us - to be the guy who makes an impact. ‘Dream is to play match-winning knock in final’: Kohli outlines ultimate goal for 2027 World Cup

A day after the veteran batting pair of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli confirmed their plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak also brought Ravindra Jadeja’s name into the conversation, saying that the ace all-rounder remains ‘in the mix’ for the showpiece event in Africa 2027. With the three in their late 30s, questions were raised about their reflexes and ability to give 100% on the field in the lead-up to the World Cup, only for them to squash such chatter and put forward their ambitions to win the tournament.&nbsp;Having last featured in an ODI earlier this year, Jadeja was named in the squad for the three-match series against the West Indies starting in Thiruvananthapuram.&nbsp; Also read| <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ind-vs-wi-1st-odi-yashasvi-jaiswal-sitanshu-kotak-shubman-gill-1790480716632">‘No Unfair Treatment’: Kotak tells Jaiswal to wait for his turn in IND vs WI ODIs</a>&nbsp;"I think he is obviously in the mix," Kotak said during a media briefing on the eve of the series opener on Sunday (Sep 27). Rohit Sharma answered his critics with a magnificent hundred in the final ODI of three-match series against England. India, however, lost the series 2-1 but Rohit's knock put a stop to retirement rumours. Now, former South Africa skipper AB de Villiers has said that Rohit will play a big part in India's 2027 ODI World Cup plans. Both, Rohit and Virat Kohli play only ODIs for India after retiring from T20s and Tests with upcoming 50-over World Cup being looked at as their last global event in India colours. While the tournament is still more than a year away, the veteran duo is expected to play an important role in it.<h2>Rohit will play a big part in 2027 World Cup, says de Villiers</h2>AB de Villiers acknowledged Rohit's lack of consistency but noted that the batter needs to be in side for the big matches. "He’s never been the most consistent player for a long period of time, a little bit up and down consistency-wise. But when the big matches present themselves, the big moments, Rohit Sharma needs to be in your side," de Villiers said."You just can’t buy that at the supermarket, guys. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved significant changes to the Men's ODI World Cup 2027 and the Men's T20 World Cup 2028, reshaping the format of two of cricket's biggest global tournaments. The decision is expected to impact qualification pathways, tournament structure, and the overall competition as the ICC looks to enhance the global appeal of the sport. The changes mark a key step in the governing body's long-term vision for international cricket.

Age doesn’t seem to be a problem for Mitchell Starc, Australian ODI captain Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, the three pace veterans the Australia wish to have on board for their title defence in the 2027 ODI World Cup. The two-time ODI World Cup-winning trio would be entering the ‘concerned age’ bracket by the time the next showpiece event comes across, but Australian head coach Andrew McDonald is hopeful of them staying fit for the 14-team tournament. Former India skipper Rohit Sharma has once again reiterated that he'll do 'anything in my capacity' to play 2027 ODI World Cup. Rohit, who is currently 38, will be 40 by the time next 50-over WC starts in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Under him, India reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final, only to lose against Australia. Rohit then led India to 2024 T20 World Cup and retired from the format. The ODI WC 2027 is still far away and fitness, apart from form, will be the biggest factor to decide Rohit's participation in the tournament.<h2>Rohit on playing 2027 ODI World Cup</h2>"I definitely want to go out there and win the World Cup for my country; that is something that I've always looked upon. I've grown up watching this 50-over World Cup. There was no T20 World Cup, no IPL back then, and that was the pinnacle of cricket, which used to happen every four years. So, there was desperation; there was so much wait for that one trophy. And yeah, I really want that trophy, so I'm going to try and do everything in my power and capacity to work hard and get it," Rohit said at an ICC event.<h2>Rohit's ODI career highlights</h2>Rohit made his ODI debut against Ireland in 2007, but it wasn't untill 2012 when he started to open that he became a bankable player for India. Mohammed Shami last played an ODI for India early this year in the triumphant Champions Trophy campaign and hasn’t donned the Indian jersey since. Although he remains an integral part of India’s white-ball setup, Shami has regularly faced rejection despite his significant domestic performances; but not for long anymore, as the selectors have admitted keeping a close tab on his domestic showing, opening doors for his possible return to the Indian team, considering the 2027 ODI World Cup is less than two years away.&nbsp;"Mohammed Shami is being discussed on a regular basis. Shami was India's best bowler in the last two ICC tournaments he participated in, returning with the most wickets for the Men in Blue.

Mohammed Shami last played an ODI for India early this year in the triumphant Champions Trophy campaign and hasn’t donned the Indian jersey since. Although he remains an integral part of India’s white-ball setup, Shami has regularly faced rejection despite his significant domestic performances; but not for long anymore, as the selectors have admitted keeping a close tab on his domestic showing, opening doors for his possible return to the Indian team, considering the 2027 ODI World Cup is less than two years away. "Mohammed Shami is being discussed on a regular basis. He is not out of reckoning. The only concern is about his fitness. A bowler of his calibre will get wickets. Virat Kohli to play in Vijay Hazare Trophy? Here's what we know so far

There’s a lot of chatter everywhere on whether the star pair of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should stick around till the next ODI World Cup, in Africa in late 2027. Although contrasting reports keep the internet users busy now and then, Team India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak shrugged off any discussion around it. Following the recently concluded Ranchi ODI against South Africa, which India won by 17 runs, thanks to a record 52nd One-Day hundred by Kohli and 58 from Rohit, Kotak confined his remarks to praising both and urging everyone to stay in the moment.&nbsp;"There's no point talking about all this," Kotak said after the match. "I don't know why we need to look at all this (about him playing the next ODI WC) - he's (Kohli) really batting well, and I don't see any reason we need to talk about his future.” &nbsp;"Just the way he's batting, it's just brilliant. The way he's performing, [and] his fitness - there are no questions about anything," Kotak continued. "I feel such things [the 2027 World Cup] shouldn't even be spoken about after the way he plays and performs. That is something which is two years away.&nbsp; There's no point in talking about all this. 'I don’t think they...,' Ex-India coach Kumble on Rohit and Kohli's 2027 ODI World Cup chances

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be back in the Indian colours for the forthcoming ODI series against Australia starting this Sunday (Oct 19) in Perth. Since announcing their respective Test and T20I retirements, both had just one format to represent India in, with a single aim - to stay in contention for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Struggling England cannot take 2027 ODI World Cup rankings for granted: Marcus Trescothick

The 2027 ODI World Cup in Africa is more than two years away, but the co-host, Cricket South Africa (CSA), has unveiled the venues and roadmap for the same. While South Africa will host the major chunk of matches, 44, Namibia and Zimbabwe, the remaining two hosts, will stage a combined ten games.
