Golden Globe Awards 2023: Hollywood rolls out red carpet for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky

The state of California in the United States has experienced a number of megadroughts over the years including just last month prompting officials to impose water restrictions across the state with limited supplies for vital farmland. In contrast, one of the driest states in the country, following a series of storms, is now witnessing deadly flash floods, landslides, and uprooting trees which have affected road travel and left thousands without electricity, due to heavy rains and strong winds. This has been attributed to an overlapping weather phenomenon called “atmospheric river” and “bomb cyclone”.

Until just last week, several counties across the state were suffering due to “exceptional” drought which is the most severe categorisation assigned by the country’s Drought Monitor. However, due to recent storms, at least 17 people have been killed since the beginning of this year, said California Governor Gavin Newsom, on Tuesday, while the state’s city San Francisco witnessed a hailstorm and the small town of Montecito experienced flash floods.

Has the rain helped the drought situation, so far?

In recent weeks, the state has witnessed six atmospheric rivers in recent weeks and is poised to experience at least three more in the upcoming week, said the Newsom. According to the officials, Central California including San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento Valley has seen the most amount of water and the precipitation is nearly 140 per cent higher than the average for this time of the year.

This has led to many state reservoirs being filled which typically stayed below average this time of the year and will help with irrigation for farmlands and supply water to millions of water across the coastal cities. According to the US Drought Monitor, the storm appears to have lifted at least seven per cent of California out of the most severe categorisation.

Additionally, a hydrologist in charge of the California Nevada River Forecast Center, Alan Haynes, said that this amount of rain puts the state in a good shape at least for the next year or so, reported the Associated Press. However, it is still early to determine what the next few months would look like considering the storm has not poured as much water in northern California.

Since the atmospheric rains are not consistent and are not even striking everywhere. The reservoir at Lake Shasta had risen from 55 per cent during Christmas to 67 per cent as of earlier this week and while this is an improvement, it is still below historic averages given the prolonged water scarcity in the state, said Haynes.

Will this surplus in the water supply change anything in the long term?

Several reports citing experts and scientists said that the widespread drought in California will not be reversed due to these atmospheric rivers and bomb cyclones and it might also take consecutive years of similar weather trends of above-average rain and snowfall to actually have any lasting impact. This comes despite at least 90 per cent of the state’s population being affected by floods.

Notably, last year the state witnessed its third year of severe drought which was also the driest on record and while it is now soaking in some much-needed water, some experts say this amount of rain will help but not have a lasting impact. Additionally, they also indicated that this rain and snow won’t be enough to fix some of the long-term water problems that California along with much of the western US faces with unfavourable precipitation trends which are worsening due to climate change.

ALSO WATCH | California: Climate change is threatening world's largest Almond producer

Speaking to BBC, Jay Lund, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of California, Davis, said that while the current storm has certainly replenished some of the state’s water supply and it is always good to see rain in California. However, he noted that since the state’s weather is that of extremes and the upcoming years could witness more dry weather.

Why do these extremes not work?

While one might think that the drought-ridden state receiving huge amounts of water would be a good thing, it is in fact the opposite, as several reports suggest that a flood during a time of drought can make the situation worse. A report by Vox compares this phenomenon to overwatering a plant which after a while cannot handle soaking up so much water. Therefore, eventually, this rain turns into floods with the risk of uprooting trees.

During a press briefing, last week, California’s Director of the Department of Water Resources (DWR) Karla Nemeth, also explained that moving from one extreme weather event to the other has put the trees under stress as “after three years of intensive drought, the ground is saturated and there is a significant chance of downed trees that will create significant problems.”

Additionally, during these droughts, the roots of the trees that are supposed to absorb water become less sponge-like and with weaker roots, they are more likely to get swept away by the storm. The experts have also noted how California does not have the infrastructure to support the reservation of this much water due to its limited reservoir capacity, therefore, a lot of this water is going to the ocean.

Simply put, “The California system was built for a climate we don’t have anymore,” said Laura Feinstein who heads the work on climate resilience and environment at a San Francisco-based non-profit named SPUR. She also was also said in the context of the water coming from snowpack which is its own type of reservoir.

In this case, the snow typically melts into the reservoir and supplies residents with water during summer and fall, however, since the snowpack due to climate change now melts faster and the reservoirs are unable to capture enough water. Additionally, climate change has given rise to extreme weather events which is also creating drier, hotter conditions where the water is bound to evaporate faster.

So what can be done to mitigate this issue?

Climate scientists said that a part of the solution to these problems could be drawing levees back which would allow rivers to flood safely and not only collect more water but also do so while ensuring the safety of the land surrounding it.

Climate scientist, Peter Gleick who spoke to CNN, said that while levees have protected the communities in the past they are not designed for the climate change-induced extreme weather challenges today. Therefore, he suggests changes in infrastructure which would allow people to capture more floods and store them in underground aquifers when the water supply is running dry.

Additionally, Gleick also told CNN, “We have to design flood insurance policies to encourage people to move away from flood plains, so we can open up those floodplains, so when we get those floods they will be less damaging.”

However, to actually do so, many communities would have to relocate and also require a significant rebuilding of existing infrastructure which does not seem feasible. Notably, these underground aquifers to this day still remain vital for the state’s central valley and they are reportedly running dry.

The state of California in the United States has experienced a number of megadroughts over the years including just last month prompting officials to impose water restrictions across the state with limited supplies for vital farmland.

ALSO READ | Explained: What are ‘atmospheric rivers’, wreaking havoc with heavy rains, floods in the US? ALSO READ | California storm | Giant sinkhole swallows two cars Will this surplus in the water supply change anything in the long term? ALSO WATCH | California: Climate change is threatening world's largest Almond producer Speaking to BBC, Jay Lund, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of California, Davis, said that while the current storm has certainly replenished some of the state’s water supply and it is always good to see rain in California. During a press briefing, last week, California’s Director of the Department of Water Resources (DWR) Karla Nemeth, also explained that moving from one extreme weather event to the other has put the trees under stress as “after three years of intensive drought, the ground is saturated and there is a significant chance of downed trees that will create significant problems.” ALSO READ | Infographic: Megadrought in America, a climate disaster unseen in 1,200 years Additionally, during these droughts, the roots of the trees that are supposed to absorb water become less sponge-like and with weaker roots, they are more likely to get swept away by the storm. ALSO WATCH | WION Climate Tracker: Powerful 'Atmospheric River' drenches California So what can be done to mitigate this issue? Climate scientists said that a part of the solution to these problems could be drawing levees back which would allow rivers to flood safely and not only collect more water but also do so while ensuring the safety of the land surrounding it. Climate scientist, Peter Gleick who spoke to CNN, said that while levees have protected the communities in the past they are not designed for the climate change-induced extreme weather challenges today. Therefore, he suggests changes in infrastructure which would allow people to capture more floods and store them in underground aquifers when the water supply is running dry. ALSO READ | Study predicts super rare megflood striking California in coming decades Additionally, Gleick also told CNN, “We have to design flood insurance policies to encourage people to move away from flood plains, so we can open up those floodplains, so when we get those floods they will be less damaging.” However, to actually do so, many communities would have to relocate and also require a significant rebuilding of existing infrastructure which does not seem feasible. Notably, these underground aquifers to this day still remain vital for the state’s central valley and they are reportedly running dry. The Indian senior men's cricket team will kick off their 2023 schedule with a three-match T20I series versus Sri Lanka on home soil, starting on Tuesday (January 03) in Mumbai. The T20I squad doesn't comprise many senior players and will be led by Hardik Pandya -- who is touted to be the next captain in the shortest format. Hardik will lead a young squad with the likes of Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar, etc. at his disposal.

Ahead of the T20I series opener, at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, the 29-year-old Hardik revealed his new year resolution. Just like every Indian's dream, the star all-rounder also wants India to win the 2023 ODI World Cup. After 12 years, India will be once again be hosting the 50-over World Cup -- for the first time as the sole hosts -- and will like to replicate their 2011 heroics, when they defeated Sri Lanka in the final (back then, the tournament was co-hosted by India, SL and Bangladesh). While speaking to Sportstar, Hardik spoke about his NY resolution and said, "The biggest new year resolution is to win the World Cup."

Hardik has so far featured in five ICC events for Team India. While he has made produced some glittering performances, India have not been successful in ending their nine-year-long ICC-title drought. India's last major tournament win came in 2013 under former captain MS Dhoni. Thus, the senior player will be hopeful of firing on all cylinders and taking the Men in Blue to the coveted title later this year. During the 2011 ODI WC campaign, Yuvraj Singh was India's star performer, with 362 runs and 15 scalps. Thus, Hardik will like to follow Yuvraj's footsteps and deliver for India.

Hardik has also been promoted as the ODI vice-captain. Thus, the team management is fully backing the star all-rounder and he will be desperate to pay rich dividends in the forthcoming mega event at home.

For much of the global economy, the new year 2023 will be more difficult compared to the previous years, said the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Sunday. The weakening of financial activities in the leading nations, the United States, Europe, and China, has hurt the global economy.

Kristalina Georgieva, IMF's Managing Director, said that 2023 is more challenging than the year we leave behind, Reuters news agency reported. She stated the reason for the global economy's downturn and said, "Because the three big economies, the US, EU, and China, all are slowing down simultaneously."

IMF's stance on global economic growth in 2023, released in October 2022, highlights the influence of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the surge in inflation and interest rates. Central banks like the US Federal Reserve monitor such rates to impact the prices.

Morning Brief: World greets 2023 with fireworks, Taiwan offers aid to China amid new Covid wave, and more

Revellers in Australia are getting ready for first restriction-free New Year's Eve after two years of disruptions caused by Covid pandemic. It is expected that more than a million people will throng to Sydney's iconic harbourfront and watch the fireworks.

Sydney is one of the world's first major cities to welcome in the New Year and draws huge TV audiences around the world, with a public countdown and fireworks display over its iconic Opera House.

Covid lockdowns in 2020 and Omicron cases in 2021 had dampened the festive spirit in the last two years. This year, curbs on the celebrations have been lifted.

"This New Year's Eve we are saying Sydney is back as we kick off festivities around the world and bring in the New Year with a bang," Clover Moore, Lord Mayor of Sydney, said.

"2022 has been another year of significant challenges as we continued working to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, but tonight we put the year behind us and look with hope to 2023."

A rainbow of colour will light up Sydney Harbour, with 2,000 fireworks to be launched from the four sails of the Sydney Opera House and 7,000 fireworks from more positions on the Sydney Harbour Bridge than ever before.

The organisers told Reuters that for the first time in 12 years, fireworks will be launched from four building rooftops.

Prior to the pandemic, over a million people would join the festivities on the ground in Sydney as a billion spectators tuned in from other parts of the world.

Australia: New Year celebrations to take place without Covid curbs for first time in two years

The rabbit is a sign of peace, prosperity, and longevity in Chinese culture. So, as we travel into 2023 – the Year of the Rabbit -- we start with the hope that the growling Tiger that caused pain to the world this year is left behind for good, locked away for at least the next dozen years.

The rabbit is a sign of peace, prosperity, and longevity in Chinese culture. So, as we travel into 2023 – the Year of the Rabbit -- we start with the hope that the growling Tiger that caused pain to the world this year is left behind for good, locked away for at least the next dozen years. This year has been one of a war in Europe, high inflation, economic hardship, rising food prices and interest rates, and a China that first refused to lift its Covid lockdowns and then suddenly swung the other way. What will the next turn out to be like? Let us look at some of the issues that might crowd our mind and life spaces. The Middle Nation Dilemma The world will be watching China very closely, as it reopens after a prolonged Covid-triggered lockdown and looks at pushing its economy rapidly ahead and flexes its political, diplomatic, and economic muscles. The Covid Zero policy is out and people will have to get used to living with the virus that devastated the world in 2020 and 2021. Hospitals will be under stress and so will businesses as they stave off very different challenges than the ones faced during lockdowns. However, the Chinese economy is still predicted to grow at more than 4 per cent. The first few months of the New Year will decide whether the Year of the Rabbit turns out to be benign, peaceful, and prosperous, or whether the remnants of the growling Tiger will still play a role. Diplomatically, China will continue to face pressure from the West which now considers it as a sworn enemy. Militarily, China will flex its muscles, pushing neighbours and further raising uncertainties in Asia and elsewhere. On trade, it might see some targeted concessions from the United States, but it is unlikely their relations would return to what they were pre-Covid. The reality is that the Chinese economy has become too big for the usual U.S. sanctions to impact it beyond a point. China has other countries to potentially partner with in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. Still, the United States will continue to work towards isolating China on technology in the hope that Beijing will fall in line on other contentious issues. What’s the Face Saver? The war in Ukraine would continue, with Russia putting further pressure as winter deepens and many European countries face shortages of gas for homes and industry. While the United States would like to keep the pressure on Russia, a frustrated Europe would eventually want a way out for Moscow – some face-saver that would help Russian President Vladimir Putin pull back claiming victory. After the long war in Afghanistan, there is only that much appetite for another in Ukraine. However, the larger and sustained economic cost of the war that pushed food and energy prices to all-time highs this year, is yet to be ascertained. It is a matter of who gives in first with Europe heading into a recession. Keep a close look at the conversations in several world capitals as the snow subsides in spring. The Shift in The Middle East The Gulf countries, fresh from making money from high oil prices and basking in the glory of hosting a football World Cup, will continue to invest in relationships beyond their traditional ties with the United States. Saudi Arabia – the region’s biggest economy – welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping in a snub to Washington and signed deals worth billions of dollars. In a post-Ukraine war world, larger Gulf nations would be more careful about their self-interest and open to dealing with others. Oil will continue to play an important role in the relationships Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates form with larger nations such as China, Russia, and India. How will the Gulf oil economies play their hand in 2023 will be important. The New Most-Populous Nation India will replace China as the world’s most populous nation, becoming the world’s biggest marketplace and positioning itself as a strong alternative to its northern neighbour for industrial and technological investments. For a country, which is increasingly seen as a “bright spot” in an otherwise uncertain world, 2023 can be a huge year as it dons the G20 presidency and tries to lead from the front on critical issues facing the world as well as become a much-needed bridge between the Global North and Global South as the world realigns. India, which recently replaced Britain as the world’s fifth-largest economy, is slated to take the third spot by the end of this decade. The new crown and its steadily growing economy might place India in the right spot to claim a seat on the UN Security Council. Watch India closely. Who Gets the Chips? The decades-old ties between Washington and Beijing are changing fast, as the Biden administration pushes hard to drop thick walls between China and the chips in its effort to curb the technological rise of the world’s second-biggest economy. After years of deep technological and political engagement, the United States has finally accepted that the Chinese economy is state-led, and not market driven. Given the long-standing linkages between the two economies, there is only that much that the United States can push back on trade with its sanctions and tariffs. The focus, therefore, is on starving China of technology – an area that China has moved fast in but is still behind the United States in key segments. Drying up the chips supplies and bringing the semiconductors back to its shores to gain an upper hand over China is part of the U.S. plan to protect itself from future shocks and threats. Who, therefore, gets those chips will be something to watch for in 2023. Back to Work, Again The dreaded Covid virus is on a rampage in China, just as the rest of the world prepares to get back to fully working from workplaces after three years of a work-from-home and work-from-home-and-also-from-office world. There are people who want to be back in offices, meeting colleagues and pumping their social batteries after months of isolation. There are also many who would still want to live and work in their pyjamas. The battle is real for businesses, which want people back in the office. Nothing works better than face-to-face meetings for faster and focused decision-making. Do expect a lot more people to return for longer to offices. The stragglers might not enjoy being left out as the world has started travelling and partying hard. Many more businesses will take a tough call in 2023 than the year that’s going by. Cut To the Green The shift to renewable power is accelerating thanks to the global energy crisis, and the International Energy Agency expects total capacity growth worldwide set to almost double in the next five years, overtaking coal as the largest source of electricity generation along the way and helping keep alive the possibility of limiting global warming to 1.5 °C. The war in Ukraine increased the speed of the shift and global renewable power capacity is now expected to grow by 2,400 gigawatts (GW) over the 2022-2027 period. That is an amount equal to the entire power capacity of China today. Can European governments and businesses replace the Russian gas that has powered these nations? Next year will have a strong story to tell, as India, China and the United States lead the change. But Then It is The Economy, Stupid! High inflation is killing the world, its businesses and people, and by the looks of it, the trendline isn’t going to be dropping any soon. Several factors had a role to play this year – tighter supply chains, Covid-related stimuli, and higher food and fuel prices due to the war in Ukraine, all of which triggered monetary tightening by central banks that raised interest rates. There are strands of goodness ahead as some of these factors are becoming less of a worry given consumer prices are on the decline thanks to easing supplies, oil prices are back to their previous year levels and high-interest rates have choked demand. Do expect a slowdown, but the debate over a recession is still on as central banks might begin to go slow on further rate hikes. And if the Chinese economy manages to settle in better than expected in the new, open world, we just might see a faster economic turnaround despite the war in Europe. Asia seems to be better placed than others. Hop into a New Year with the Rabbit! (Disclaimer: The views of the writer do not represent the views of WION or ZMCL. Into the Year of the Rabbit we travel

That, technology is an inseparable part of our lives is old news. Just when we think things cannot get any more tech-driven, another vista opens and tech leads innovations again. The year 2022 was not an exception. The tech sector remains poised to transcend new boundaries in 2023, and tech leaders are optimistic as always.

"The advancement of existing technologies and the emergence of new trends have reshaped our working patterns and ushered in significant transformations across industries...," said Jagdish Mitra, Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Growth, at Tech Mahindra.

"...Artificial intelligence, for example, has become a reality in businesses, and other technologies such as metaverse, blockchain, robotics, and digital twins are expected to follow the suit in the coming years. Furthermore, the adoption of Industry 4.0 has strengthened the supply chain ecosystem, transformed manufacturing, and instilled resilience in enterprise operations..," he added.

He foresees major improvement in autonomous systems in 2023.

"...I believe in 2023, we will see significant progress in autonomous systems, 5G, and green technology, as well as a quantum leap in technological skilling to digital transformation-related skilling. With digitization sweeping the globe, these emerging technology trends will define the 'Techade' and put India on the map as a technology superpower. India has the potential to take the lead in technological innovation, and 2023 will see a continued push toward sustainable progress, supported by newer sustainable technology trends," he said.

Rajiv Bhalla, Managing Director (India), Barco said that year 2023 will be a herald of 'techade'

“In 2022, we navigated the bend to lead the digital transformation and innovation disruption, powered by new-age technologies and accelerated its amalgamation across operations and workflows. Fueled by India’s promising growth prospects, 2023 is truly going to be a ‘Techade’, given the focus on megatrends such as digitalisation, R&D and innovation, local manufacturing, global offshoring, among others...," he said.

India is a huge market for smartphones and electronics in general. India's share in the global sales of tech products rivals other major global markets.

A Gururaj, Managing Director of Optiemus Electronics, concurs.

"The hearable/wearable industry in India recorded 171% YoY growth in smartwatches, to become the biggest smartwatch market in the world...The electronics industry is set for the next wave of revolution in the coming year and 2023 can be the major milestone year in our aim to make further progress towards realising “Atmanirbhar Bharat” in electronics,” he said.
