The stock market's darkest days are yet to come. Some of the most severe downfalls the index suffered over the first 10 months of the year have been somewhat offset by Wall Street's mini-rebound since mid-October. It increased by more than 10 per cent since its low two months ago and ended the day Monday just around 4,000. Many analysts forecast that if the Federal Reserve eventually stops raising interest rates to bring rising inflation under control, equities will end in 2023 at least in this area, if not slightly higher. But many of Wall Street also anticipate that stock prices will decline significantly in the meantime before we reach that final destination.

Take Morgan Stanley, which estimates that within the first three months of the new year, the S&P 500 could fall all the way to a range between 3,000 and 3,300. Accordingly, it might lose up to 25 per cent of its value from Monday's closing level. The bottom end of that range would be 37.5 per cent lower than the previous high, which was established in early 2022.

The bank is pessimistic because its strategists predict significantly lower corporate earnings than those of the rest of Wall Street. Businesses are under pressure to increase revenue while manufacturing and other sectors of the economy are deteriorating. However, Morgan Stanley predicts that once firms made sacrifices, increasing wage expenses will limit profitability.

Additionally, Goldman Sachs strategists projected a low in the first half of the year, probably near 3,600. Based on Goldman Sachs' prediction that the economy can avoid a recession, it would be a decline of close to 10 per cent from Monday's closing.

Goldman strategists led by David Kostin predicted that the S&P 500 may drop as low as 3,100 if the economy does really collapse as many on Wall Street anticipate.

The U.S. economy will experience a recession in the second half of 2023, according to strategists at Deutsche Bank. The German bank forecasts that the recession will persist into the last six months of the year, and that may push the S&P 500 as low as 3,250 before it reaches its bottom. According to the strategists led by Binky Chadha, assuming equities follow their usual playbook during recessions, the S&P 500 could conclude the year as high as 4,500.

Azerbaijan's Baku City circuit will host the first of Formula One's six sprint races next season, the sport said on Wednesday. The others will be held in Austria, at Belgium's Spa-Francorchamps, Qatar, Austin's Circuit of the Americas and Brazil's Interlagos. Azerbaijan's race weekend is April 28-30, with the Austrian race at Spielberg from June 30 to July 2. Spa is July 28-30, Qatar Oct. 6-8, Austin Oct. 20-22 and Brazil Nov. 3-5. Baku, Spa, Qatar and Austin will be hosting sprints for the first time.

Qatar was absent from this year's calendar due to the country hosting the soccer World Cup. Formula One is doubling the number of sprint race weekends, with three held this year at Italy's Imola, in Austria and Brazil. The sprint format involves qualifying on Friday for a 100km race on Saturday, with points awarded to the top eight, that sets the grid for the main grand prix on Sunday. Pole position is awarded to the fastest driver in Friday qualifying rather than who starts Sunday's race at the front of the grid.

The same format will continue next year, although Formula One is considering changes for the future including turning Saturday into a stand-alone race. Formula One said the choice of locations was based on research into which tracks offered the best overtaking opportunities, close racing and high-speed sections. "We have seen a hugely positive reaction to the F1 Sprint events during the first two years of its running," said F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali. "The introduction of the F1 Sprint has created a race weekend that includes three days of competitive racing action and brings more entertainment to fans of the sport as well as additional value for key stakeholders including teams, broadcasters, partners, and host venues."

Baku promoter Arif Rahimov said in May that he wanted to host a sprint weekend to create more excitement. "We're a market where most of the fans are not as educated in the sport itself so when you say that we have two races...that will definitely increase the attendance on a Saturday and give them more value for money," he said then. "I'm a big proponent of it. I really like the idea. I think it's good just to mix things around a little bit throughout the years. Things get boring and people just get too used to the same format and then they lose their interest."

BCCI is set to host the inaugural edition of the Women's IPL in early 2023. While the itinerary is being readied, it is believed that the first-ever season will kick off in India in March next year, soon after the conclusion of the T20 Women's World Cup and right before the men's IPL. For quite some time, the Women's IPL has been long awaited and the historic tournament is set to get underway next year.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, BCCI is considering a five-team Women's IPL. Unlike in the men's competition, each team will reportedly field as many as five overseas players. Out of the five, four must be from ICC Full Member Nations whereas the remaining one has to be from an Associate Nation.

In addition, BCCI is in talks between two options for selling the IPL franchises: zone wise-North (Dharamsala/Jammu), South (Kochi/Vizag), Central (Indore/Nagpur/Raipur), East (Ranchi/Cuttack), North East (Guwahati) and West (Pune/Rajkot)-with matches to take place at non-IPL venues or existing city-wise as is the case with the men's IPL (Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata-with matches held at IPL venues). Nonetheless, nothing is final in this regard and a final decision will be taken by the IPL chairperson (with the BCCI's current treasurer Arun Dhumal set to take over the post) and the board office bearers in due course of time.

As per reports, a caravan-style itinerary is also being considered for the inaugural edition of the Women's IPL. It means one could see a bunch of matches taking place at a venue before the entire competition will shift to a different venue. IPL 2021 was staged in a similar format, which saw matches being held in Mumbai and Chennai first before the tournament shifted to Delhi and Ahmedabad (prior to the second wave of the Covid-19 virus postponing the tournament and later shifting it entirely to the UAE, in late 2021).

Talking about the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian eves, they have been on a roll in 2022. After missing out on a semi-final spot in the 2022 Women's World Cup by a whisker, India won a silver medal at the CWG'2022 edition and have now booked a place in the Asia Cup, beating Thailand by 74 runs in the first semi-final on Thursday (October 13). They will now face Sri Lanka in the final, on Saturday (October 15).

Indian firms would likely increase employee compensation by 10.4 per cent in 2023, which would be virtually in line with the 10.6 per cent increase seen so far in 2022, as reported by Reuters.

The likelihood of a double-digit pay hike comes as the south Asian nation struggles with skyrocketing inflation amid concerns of a recession in the global economy. In August, India's inflation increased to 7 per cent, continuing an eight-month streak in which it exceeded the central bank's tolerance target.

In a statement based on a poll, Roopank Chaudhary, partner, of human capital solutions at Aon in India, said that the compensation boost reflects "the confidence that corporate India has in its strong business performance."

Data from 1,300 businesses in more than 40 categories were analysed for the survey.

The impact of increased costs and salary pressures must be balanced, Chaudhary added, with the relatively high rate of turnover and the continuous need for vital talent.

The study revealed that staff departures were still high in the first half of this year (20.3 per cent), but slightly lower than the 21 per cent in 2021.

With a forecasted pay growth of 12.8 per cent, e-commerce tops all other sectors, followed by start-ups, hi-tech/information technology and IT-enabled services, 11.3 per cent, and financial institutions, 10.7 per cent.

The BCCI is planning to start the Women's IPL by 2023, Board President Sourav Ganguly said on Friday while four exhibition games make a return this season after a one-year gap.

The BCCI, which has been criticised in the past for not starting the Women's IPL, will need AGM's approval to kickstart the league next season. The Board is planning to have five or six teams in the inaugural edition.

"It (the full-fledged women's IPL) has to be approved by the AGM. We plan to start it by next year hopefully," BCCI president Sourav Ganguly told reporters after the IPL Governing Council meeting here on Friday.

In an interview to PTI in February, Ganguly had said that Women's IPL will be launched in 2023.

IPL chairman Brijesh Patel also made it clear that this season there will be four matches for the three women teams around men's IPL play-offs.

"There will be four matches involving three teams around the time of the playoffs," Patel said after the meeting.

With the second half of the IPL being shifted to the UAE due to the pandemic, the exhibitions games were not held last year. However, they were staged in the UAE in 2020 when IPL Trailblazers won the title.

According to Patel, there would be five or six teams in the Women's IPL but again that would need approval of the General Body.

The most likely venue for the women's exhibitions games is Pune.

The IPL starts on Saturday with defending champions Chennai Super Kings up against Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Wankhede stadium.

The issue of IPL media rights for the 2023-2027 cycle was also discussed by the Governing Council.

"The tender will be out soon," said a Governing Council member.

Star India had paid a whopping Rs 16,347.5 crore for the 2018-2022 cycle. With the league's popularity soaring and the addition of two new teams, that number could touch a staggering Rs 40,000 crore for the upcoming five-year cycle.

Companies interested in securing the rights to India cricket's hottest property include Reliance backed Viacom 18, current right holders Disney Star, Sony (which had paid Rs 8200 for nine years, back in 2009) and streaming giant Amazon which could bid for the digital rights.

In a first, a plan seems to be underway in Japan to launch a "wooden" satellite in 2023.

The team, which is developing it, looks to harness the environmental friendliness and low cost of wood in space development.

The team comprising of Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry Co will come up with the satellite.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is likely to leave the Premier League champions when his contract expires in 2023 as he wants to take a break before venturing into international football, the Spaniard said on Wednesday.

"The next step will be a national team, if there is a possibility," Guardiola was quoted by Spanish daily Marca.

"After seven years at this club, I think I`m going to have a break. I will need to rest after being somewhere so many years and also stop to evaluate what we`ve done and to try to learn from other coaches.

"If, during this process of stopping, there is a chance to coach a national team then I think I`d like that. I`d like to coach at a European Championship or Copa America or World Cup. I`d like to experience that."

Former midfielder Guardiola has won three league titles with City and as many with previous clubs Bayern Munich and Barcelona as manager. But the Champions League trophy has eluded him at City after he lifted two at Barca.

Guardiola also won six league titles and the 1992 European Cup with Barcelona as a player, having scored five goals in 47 internationals for Spain.
