It wasn’t just about lifting the title, winning the gold medal or breaching the elusive 90m mark at the Sri Kanteerava Outdoor Stadium, in Bengaluru on Saturday (July 5). For India's poster boy, Neeraj Chopra, the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 was a statement — that Indian athletics deserves a stage. And that fans, federations, and families need to show up. Inside the stadium, as tricolours waved and chants of “Neeraj! Neeraj!” filled the air, India’s two-time Olympic medalist was in the spotlight. But even in victory, his mind was on something more enduring. What if people will not turn up? But Bengaluru changed that. The Neeraj Chopra Classic marked a rare sight in Indian sport — a stadium packed not for cricket or football, but for a javelin competition. For athletes. For the love of track and field.
‘This is what we have wanted for years’
“I felt really good today. For once, athletics got the support it deserves. This is what we’ve wanted for years,” Neeraj said after winning the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 in front of a packed stadium. What made the evening even more special was the crowd — loud, invested, and passionate. That, for Neeraj, was the biggest victory. “When I started out, there was nobody in the stands. We used to try so hard to get people to come for the nationals,” he recalled emotionally. “Now, people are finally noticing what track and field athletes go through," he added. The emotional core of Neeraj’s message wasn’t about his own greatness. It was about the many Indian athletes still waiting to be seen. It’s been a long road, but Neeraj knows this can’t stop at one successful event. “Please come and support our athletes — not just at big events, but at national-level meets too. You’ll see sprinters, long-distance runners, jumpers, throwers — all working just as hard.”
‘Track and field is demanding but beautiful’
In a country which is obsessed by cricket, Neeraj sees change. But he also sees the need for more — especially if India wants to compete globally across disciplines. “If parents start seeing that people attend these events, that there’s a future in athletics, they’ll start encouraging their kids too.” And this isn’t just about medals. Track and field is one of the hardest sports. It’s raw. It’s demanding. It’s beautiful. And if people give it a chance, they’ll fall in love with it,” Neeraj said with conviction. His ultimate dream? That one day, every major city in India hosts packed stadiums not just for cricket — but for athletes chasing 100m finishes, 2m jumps, and 85m throws.

The record of highest score by a wicketkeeper-batter against India remains intact with Zimbabwe's Andy Flower who had scored 232 not out during the Nagpur Test in 2000. Smith's aggregate of 272 in the Birmingham Test is also second most behind Flower's 287 which the latter had scored in the same Nagpur Test. Smith may have broken both these records if he had a little more support from other batters, especially in the first innings where six England batters registered a duck.

India Test skipper Shuman Gill conceded that flat pitches combined with dukes ball which go soft quickly cause Test cricket to lose its essence in England. The statement came after India registered their first ever win in Birmingham and levelled the three-Test series 1-1. England skipper Ben Stokes also echoed the same views after a mammoth 336-run loss. Stokes also rued the decision to asking India to bat first despite winning the toss - the only time they were ahead of India in the Test. “To be honest, it’s probably ended up being more of a subcontinent pitch as it got deeper and deeper into the game. There was certainly a little bit in it to start off with, and I think we exposed that very very well early on,” said the English skipper. The third Test of the five-match series will be played at Lord's in London from July 10.

“If the ball is doing something, you enjoy playing. If you know there is only 20 overs of any help and then you have to spend the rest of the day on the defensive, thinking how to stop runs, then the game loses its essence,” Said Gill after India won in Birmingham.

The first edition of the World Club Championship will feature only five teams, with no mention of any Indian Premier League team's participation. In a massive blow for IPL 20245 winners, they will not participate in the inaugural edition. Although the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) supports this tournament idea, they are unlikely to have a team representing them. Besides, India's neighbour, Pakistan, may also be sidelined from the upcoming World Club T20 Championship, expected to begin in 2026. According to the sources, the team that wins the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is unlikely to be invited to the tournament. The event is being planned quickly with the support of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and its chairman, Jay Shah. “The Pakistan Cricket Board was invited to send its CEO of the PSL for a meeting held on the sidelines of the cricket connect meeting in London last month, but no one showed up,” the source said. The meeting was organised by the England and Wales Cricket Board and supported by the ICC. CEOs from major T20 leagues such as the Big Bash League (BBL), The Hundred, South Africa's Premier T20 Cricket League (SA20), Major League Cricket (MLC) and Caribbean Premier League (CPL) were all present. Also Check - Mohammed Shami net worth, salary and endorsement deals: Check how rich the Indian speedster is Pakistan was also invited, but no one represented them at the meeting, the source confirmed. “Discussions were held on the proposed World Clubs Championship, its window, format, schedule etc. (The) CEOs of the Emirates League, Big Bash League, The Hundred, SA20, MLC, Caribbean Premier League etc attended the meeting.
Alcaraz leaves Centre Court crowd in disbelief
With the match at one set all and in the third set, an “out of the world” winner from Alcaraz broke the internet. With the Spaniard leading 40-30 at 3-3, Rublev pushed his opposite number in the corner to take control of the point, however, Alcaraz produced a magical forehand as he delivered the crosscourt winner. One of the users “King Carlos” while another wrote “The King of Centre Court” as he produced the master class against Rublev.
Ready for the big challenge?
While Alcaraz's main rivals, seven-time winner Novak Djokovic and world number one Jannik Sinner, are in ominous form, the second seed has blown hot and cold so far. It was the same story on Sunday as he struggled to find his rhythm early in the match, despite occasional flashes of brilliance, before raising his level. ALSO READ | IND vs ENG: Shastri lauds Gambhir for ‘bold play’ in Edgbaston as India break Birmingham jinx to level Test series "I think I played intelligent and smart today against him, tactically," he said. England captain Ben Stokes feels that the Edgbaston pitch used in the just-concluded second Test against India acted like subcontinental as the game progressed, facing flak on social media for igniting the blame game after his team’s embarrassing 336-run beating. England won the toss and decided to bowl first - a decision they regretted, as also echoed by team coach Brendon McCullum after the game that ended late on day five. While 1632 runs were scored on that 'flat Edgbaston pitch' across four innings, which included three centuries from as many different batters, and also a double hundred, the social media mocked Stokes for his poor assessment. Stokes’ England was never in the game, not even from the beginning. Despite removing KL Rahul early on day one, they lagged throughout, with Indian captain Shubman Gill punishing them across both innings. While his career-best 269 in the first innings broke multiple records, also propelling Team India to a mammoth 587, his second-inning hundred was the one that took the game away from England. Also read | IND vs ENG: Shastri lauds Gambhir for ‘bold play’ in Edgbaston as India break Birmingham jinx to level Test series Even English batters enjoyed scoring runs in Birmingham, with Harry Brook and Jamie Smith stitching a 300-plus run-stand for the sixth wicket in the first innings, but failed to replicate the same in the final innings, as England got all out on 271. Stokes, however, scored just 33 runs across both innings, failing to contribute with the bat in this series thus far. “To be honest, it’s probably ended up being more of a subcontinent pitch as it got deeper and deeper into the game. There was certainly a little bit in it to start off with, and I think we exposed that very very well early on,” Stokes said during a chat with Test Match Special. “Then just as it sort of got deeper and deeper, it just became a real tough slug for us and obviously with the Indian attack and the conditions that they’re used to, they were sort of used to and knew sort of how to expose those conditions just sort of a little bit better than us and that can happen sometimes. But yeah, it’s nothing to be too disheartened about. We can take being out-skilled, and we’ve certainly been out-skilled this week,” the English skipper continued. Meanwhile, Team India’s win at Edgbaston was their maiden Test victory at this venue in nine outings thus far. With the five-match series now tied at 1-1, the action moves to Lord’s in London for the third Test starting next Thursday (Jul 10). Check some internet posts -

'Just do well for country,' Akash Deep's sister sends strong message to India quick after Edgbaston heroics

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has lauded current team boss Gautam Gambhir for bold play in the second Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Days after he tore apart Gambhir and the backroom staff’s call to rest Jasprit Bumrah for this game as part of his workload management, Shastri was quick to praise Gambhir for tactically pulling off a win at this venue. Team India had never won a Test at Edgbaston in the past eight outings, and without Bumrah, it looked improbable; however, Shubman Gill’s new-look unit did it, winning the second Test by 336 runs late on day five. “You have the best fast bowler in the world, and you make him sit out after seven days of rest. It’s something very hard to believe,” Shastri criticised Gambhir’s call to rest Bumrah for the second Test. “If you look at the run India has had, this becomes a very, very important Test match.” Also read | ‘We ran second for five days,’ McCullum on how England messed up toss in Edgbaston Test defeat Meanwhile, Gill and seamer Akash Deep were the two protagonists for the visitors. Confidence is good, but overconfidence is not. England perhaps was a bit too confident in pulling off Leeds' result in Birmingham after they decided to bowl first on a flatter Edgbaston wicket against India in the second Test. When the sun set behind the stands of the Sri Kanteerava Outdoor Stadium on July 5th, Bengaluru held its breath. Neeraj Chopra, two-time Olympic medalist, reigning world champion, and a national icon, stood at the edge of the runway, javelin in hand — not just as an athlete, but as the architect of the very event he was about to compete in: the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025. And then came the roar. As Neeraj began his run-up, the stadium rose. Flags waved. Children cheered. Adults leaned forward. With a final, violent snap of the arm, the javelin soared across the sky. It wasn’t just a throw — it was a statement. 86.18 metres. A winning mark. A fitting end to a day that had already begun rewriting the history of Indian athletics. But behind the smiles and celebration lay something deeper — a complex web of pressure, responsibility, and quiet anxiety. After the event, Neeraj sat down for a candid press conference. Not one to hide behind cliches, he opened up — not just about the competition, but about the immense strain of playing dual roles. “Pressure of being the host was more,” he admitted. “I was training, yes. But I was also making sure the logistics were perfectly in lune, all the athletes were comfortable, the schedule was on time.” For three to four days leading into the event, Neeraj was clocking 8 to 9 hours of non-stop activity. He wasn’t just throwing — he was organising, coordinating and leading from the front. From food arrangements at the hotel to checking everything at the stadium, he was involved in it all. “At one point, I was telling the organisers that you can go and pick up the javelins instead of using the car,” he said with a small laugh. “That’s how much this meant to me.” For all his global accolades, Neeraj remains deeply grounded. And despite being the poster boy of Indian athletics, he confessed to feeling nervous before the event — unsure if the crowd would show up, unsure if people would be there. “I’ve trained here in Bengaluru before. I’ve played here during my early years. But this… this was something else,” he said emotionally. As he walked into the arena, chants of “Neeraj! Neeraj!” echoed from all corners. Kids waved the national flag. A standing ovation greeted him before he even made his first throw. “It was emotional. I wasn’t expecting such a turnout,” he said. “It made me want to throw further. But also, it added pressure.” The conditions weren’t easy. A swirling headwind played its part with the technique of even the best throwers not coming up to the mark. Neeraj’s first attempt was fouled — a reminder that this sport, even for its greats, is never forgiving. “I was too close to the line. I over-committed. My coach told me to relax. Energy is good, but you need to use it wisely," he explained. On his next attempts, Neeraj adjusted. Technically tighter, more composed, and emotionally centered, he found his rhythm. “I had seen Julius Yego and Rumesh in really good form. They were pushing me. That helped. I knew I had to be sharp.” His winning throw came in the third round. He felt it the moment it left his hand. “The throw felt clean, powerful. I didn’t need to look at the distance — I knew it had crossed 86.” When asked what he would feel when he finally returned to his hotel room after what was an emotional night for him, Neeraj didn’t opt for drama. He opted for truth. “Will I cry? I don’t know. I haven’t cried in a long time. Not even I won the at the Olympics,” he said softly. “But I will be happy. My family is here. I’ll sit with them, laugh with them. That’s what matters.” For Neeraj, the medal — even the event — wasn’t just about sport. It was about legacy. About building something that lives beyond him. “We’ve done it once. Now we’ll do it again. And better,” he promised. Neeraj Chopra — athlete, champion, host, leader — had just pulled off one of the most significant evenings in Indian athletics. And as he packed up his spikes and stadium lights were turned off, one thing became clear: The throw was brilliant. The competition was successful. But the real triumph was this —India showed up for athletics. And it was because Neeraj Chopra led the way.

Suryavanshi was also in attendance at Edgbaston in Birmingham during India’s second Test against England. He saw his idol and newly-appointed Team India Test captain Shubman Gill complete his maiden double hundred in the red-ball format. Gill hit his career-best 269 in the first innings, helping India score a massive first-innings total (587). Besides, reflecting on his record-breaking hundred against England U-19, Vaibhav revealed he wasn’t aware of the record until the team manager broke the news to him. "I didn't know I had made a record. Team manager Ankit sir told me that I have... I was very inspired by him [Shubman Gill] because I saw the game," he said. "Even after scoring 100 and 200, he kept at it and took the game forward. So, I also had it in mind that I could have batted for longer because there was a lot of time, 20 overs were left. I could have extended my innings, but there was a shot that I couldn't connect 100% which is why I got out; otherwise, I would have tried to bat as long as him." Meanwhile, Vaibhav rose to the limelight with his IPL debut this season for the Rajasthan Royals. From hitting a six on his first ball in the cash-rich league to slamming the quickest hundred by an Indian in IPL in just 35 balls – the youngest by any player.

After his 143 off 78 balls batting first in Worcester, which included ten massive sixes and 13 fours, Vaibhav plans to up his game in the final match of the series on Monday (Jul 7).
