Indian Test captain Shubman Gill has set his sights on the ultimate goal: the WTC Final next year at the Oval. As Team India gears up for its 600th Test match, which gets underway with the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Saturday (Aug 15), Gill wants his side to sweat it out in all nine remaining Tests and aim for the finale. Although India must win at least six or seven Test matches to push for WTC Final qualification, the two-time runners-up should be aiming for all nine, giving themselves the best chance of making it to the UK. That journey, however, starts from Galle, as India and Sri Lanka face off in a two-match Test series. “The main goal is to play the WTC final, which is next year. And we have got about nine Tests, and I think we have to win around six or seven to be able to have a good chance at qualifying. So in terms of that, I think it's a very important series for us," Gill said at the pre-match presser. Also read| 'Very big honour': Shubman Gill on leading India in historic 600th Test Ahead of India’s first Test since losing to South Africa at home in November 2025, Gill featured late in the second innings of the lone warm-up match, which India won. He argued that, should an opportunity arise and if the scheduling allows, India would get more time to prepare for this crucial tour that will determine their fate for next year’s WTC Final. “If we do have an opportunity and if the scheduling allows us to have at least a week or 10 days before the Test match starts, it obviously helps with the preparation. So it's never easy for the players to be able to adapt. And most of the players in this team, I think, require a bit of time to be able to adjust to the conditions. And it's not like a lot of the players have a lot of matches or a lot of experience under their belts. So the extra time in preparation definitely helps," added Gill. Meanwhile, as things stand, India is placed fifth on the WTC standings for the current cycle, winning four and losing four in nine contested matches. Australia continue to lead the charts, followed by South Africa, New Zealand and Bangladesh, respectively.

Captain Shubman Gill wants India to use their historic 600th Test as the beginning of a fresh push towards the World Test Championship (WTC) final and a series win in Sri Lanka will be important for India to remain in the race. The Men in Blue are currently fifth in the WTC standings with a points percentage of 48.15, while Sri Lanka are sixth with 41.67. 'Very big honour': Shubman Gill on leading India in historic 600th Test

As India is set to begin their two-match Test series against Sri Lanka starting from Saturday (August 15), with the first match set to take place in Galle, the squad's bowling lineup still depends heavily on Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, who have always been game-changers in both red-ball and white-ball formats. However, the absence of Bumrah in the series due to a fitness clearance issue from the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (COE) could be a major blow to the bowling attack, putting the pressure solely on Siraj. Meanwhile, Manav Suthar's test debut against Afghanistan in June 2026 surprised selectors, offering a sign of confidence and hope for the bowling lineup besides Siraj. However, Gurnoor Brar's inclusion still remains a concern, as this will be his debut for the Test and he has not been quite impressive in the white-ball formats that he has played ODIs against Afghanistan and England. Also read: IND vs SL, 1st Test: When and where to watch live streaming in India?
Experienced pacer Navdeep Saini opens up
Amid all this, questions also arise about another pacer, Navdeep Saini, who made his debut in 2019 under the captaincy of Virat Kohli and last played his International cricket against Sri Lanka on July 28, 2021. Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is sans coach as of now after Stephan Fleming stood down recently post a successful 18-year-long stint. The five-time champions have not announced a new coach as of now but retired Indian off-spinner Ravi Ashwin thinks a former England player could land the job. The absence of coach, according to Ashwin, hampers CSK's trade window deals as well with the franchise being linked to Hardik Pandya trade from Mumbai Indians.
Who will become next CSK coach?
"Names like Andrew Flintoff and Brendon McCullum have been doing the rounds. That’ll be a good swap to send Stephen Fleming to England and get McCullum here. Now, the ECB are fine with sharing jobs so McCullum can be England’s white-ball coach and do the same with CSK. But I have a feeling that Eoin Morgan could be that Englishman who becomes CSK’s head coach,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. Notably, both Flintoff and McCullum have played for CSK in the past. Also Read - Shoaib Akhtar says seam-friendly England pitches 'will be very difficult' for Pakistan in upcoming Test seriesAshwin also pointed out how lack of a coach affects the trade window opportunity for the CSK and said: "It must be remembered that the trade window is ongoing. And CSK are still without a coach. This makes discussing trade deals very hard. While there are rumors about a Hardik Pandya trade for Khaleel Ahmed and Shivam Dube, the incoming coach might feel he could extract the best out of Khaleel or Dube. Let’s not forget that Dube has played in beast mode for CSK themselves two to three years back."
What next for CSK?
Since winning their last title in 2023, CSK have failed to make it the playoffs in the last three seasons from IPL 2024 to 2026. CSK finished on 8th in last season out of 10 teams, which is slightly better than last place finish in the 2025, and three spots lower than fifth place finish in IPL 2024.

Following Stephen Fleming's departure after 18 years, Ashwin predicts Eoin Morgan could be CSK's next head coach, noting the vacancy complicates active IPL trade window negotiations.
