Australian captain Pat Cummins made no excuses for his team’s shocking nine-wicket loss against Bangladesh in the first of the two Tests in Darwin on Sunday (Aug 16). Cummins led a full-strength Australian XI for the series opener but failed to replicate Steve Waugh, who guided Australia to an innings win over Bangladesh at the very venue 23 years ago. While Cummins expressed no concerns over Australia's preparation for the first Test, he hinted at returning to the drawing board and making changes to the XI for the next Test if necessary. Bangladesh, on the other hand, entered this Test on the back of getting folded for just 54 in their scheduled warm-up tie against Cricket Australia XI; they, however, did the unthinkable by beating the mighty Aussies for their first Test win Down Under, and only their second-ever against Australia in Tests. Chasing a mere 57 in the final innings, Bangladesh lost their opener and first-inning hero, Tanzid Hasan, for a duck before Shadman and Mominul stitched a stand to see Bangladesh home with nine wickets remaining. "I thought our preparation was pretty much spot-on. I thought it was excellent, so, yeah, no excuses," Cummins said at the post-match presentation. "They [Bangladesh] played really well. I thought the day one wicket, [there was] a little bit [in it] early but obviously [we've] got to try and find a way to bat a little bit longer than we did, and then just couldn't penetrate with the ball." "They outplayed us in all facets.
Bangladesh’s Biggest Win
Touring Australia for the second time and in only its third Test Down Under, Bangladesh have a Test win to their name. Putting this win above every other across formats, Shanto reflected, “This is the biggest win so far for Bangladesh in any format. Going forward, we want to do something special in the future.” Upon being asked about their plans for the second Test in Mackay, where they would have a chance of creating history, Shanto explained, “We have to play five days of good cricket, and I'm going to say the same thing. Playing only their third Test on Australian soil and the first since 2003, Bangladesh entered this contest on the back of getting all out for just 54 during their lone warm-up fixture against the Cricket Australia XI. Instead of feeling burdened about it coming up against a full-strength Australia, Bangladesh believed in their game and executed most plans to keep the Aussies silent throughout the four days. A nine-wicket victory over the mighty Aussies is also Bangladesh’s second-biggest win in terms of wickets in this format. Hasan Mahmud was Bangladesh’s star bowler, picking up his maiden five-wicket haul Down Under in Australia’s first innings and returning with six wickets for just 55 runs. Has Devdutt Padikkal answered all the questions the men’s selection committee and the team management were seeking for the longest time? Perhaps! The left-handed batter came in at number three on day one of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and owned it completely. Padikkal smashed his maiden Test hundred, remaining unbeaten on 131* at stumps, propelling India to 288 for two and into the driver’s seat. Looking in command and control of his knock, Padikkal made light work of Sri Lanka’s bowling attack, impressing all, including cricketer-turned-broadcaster Sanjay Manjrekar. Since dropping Cheteshwar Pujara at number three, India tried several options, including their Test captain Shubman Gill in that position, but none seemed to have clicked. Later, commenting on his strengths during a chat on Sony Sports Network, Manjrekar said, “Devdutt Padikkal was the big change that India had, I really think selection is so good that when you see Padikkal walk in and play spin so comfortably, because he's good in defense against spin, he's good at picking 1s and 2s when the field is slightly deep, and then he's also good at playing attacking shots, and that too off the back foot on slow, turning pitches.”
Backfoot Shots Separate Padikkal from Rest
While he looked utterly in control of his shot selection on the front foot, Padikkal’s backfoot shot selection left Manjrekar in awe. The former Indian batter even suggested that Padikkal should continue at number three for India in Tests even when Sudharsan returns from his injury. “That's something remarkable. On slow, turning pitches, to hit shots off the back foot with a straight bat and the pull shot tells you that it's somebody who wants to get onto the back foot, and the best way to play spin on a slow, turning pitch is to play the majority of the bowling off the back foot. “Along with that, he's also got this knack of going down the pitch and hitting the ball over the sight screen. So on pitches where there is going to be an emphasis on spin, India should bat him at number 3 even if Sai Sudharsan comes back, because he looks such a formidable player against spin; I think it was a godsend for India, Devdutt Padikkal at No. 3 with the kind of spin talent he has,” Manjrekar continued.

After sealing 2027 ODI World Cup qualification, Afghanistan romped past hosts Ireland to win the five-match One-Day series 4-0. Leading 3-0 heading into the final match in Belfast on Saturday (Aug 15) after the series opener was washed out, Afghanistan completed their highest ODI run chase to win the game by six wickets. As India celebrates its 80th Independence Day, here’s a look back at the sporting achievements that reflect the country’s remarkable journey and progress.

80 years, countless milestones: India’s sporting journey since 1947

There was a time when the world did not associate India with cricket, badminton or athletics. Before those sports produced their own generations of champions, it was hockey that carried the Indian flag across the globe. For decades, the Indian men's hockey team was not merely successful at the Olympics. It was dominant. India won eight Olympic gold medals in hockey, a record that remains unmatched by any team in the sport, along with one silver and three bronze medals. But the most powerful chapter of that story started in 1948. Just one year after India gained Independence, the country arrived at the London Olympics carrying something far bigger than a hockey stick. It was the first Olympics for India as an independent nation, and hockey gave the newly free country the perfect sporting statement. India defeated Great Britain 4-0 in the final to win the gold medal. It was India's first Olympic gold as an independent nation, and the symbolism could hardly have been greater. The former colonial power was beaten on its own soil, while the Indian flag rose above the podium. For a country still finding its identity after Independence and Partition, the victory represented much more than sport.
The dynasty that started before Independence
India's hockey story had already begun before 1947. The team won three consecutive Olympic gold medals at Amsterdam 1928, Los Angeles 1932 and Berlin 1936. Major Dhyan Chand became the defining figure of that era, helping establish Indian hockey as a global force. The 1936 Berlin Games were particularly memorable. India defeated Germany 8-1 in the final, while Dhyan Chand's extraordinary skill helped cement his reputation as one of the greatest players the sport had seen. But Independence changed the meaning of those victories. The hockey team was no longer simply representing British India. It was now representing a sovereign nation. And the first opportunity to demonstrate that came in London in 1948.
London 1948: The gold that belonged to a free India
The 1948 Olympics were held in a world still recovering from the Second World War. For India, the Games came just months after Independence. The team had to navigate the enormous political and social changes that had accompanied Partition. Several players who had been part of India's hockey ecosystem before Independence were now representing Pakistan. Yet the Indian team remained formidable. Led by captain Kishan Lal, India progressed through the tournament and reached the final against Great Britain. The result was emphatic: India won 4-0. That victory became the first Olympic gold medal for independent India. It was the kind of sporting moment that could define a nation. The country had just emerged from colonial rule. Its institutions were still taking shape. Its economy and infrastructure faced enormous challenges. Yet on the Olympic hockey field, India was already a world power. Also Read: IND vs SL, 1st Test: Padikkal marks comeback with maiden international century
The golden run continued
The London triumph was not an isolated moment. India followed it with gold at Helsinki in 1952 and Melbourne in 1956, extending the Olympic winning streak to six consecutive Games from 1928 through 1956. No other team has matched that run in Olympic hockey. The 1952 final produced another iconic performance. Against the Netherlands, India won 6-1, with Balbir Singh Sr. scoring five goals, a record for an individual in an Olympic men's hockey final that remains part of the sport's history. Four years later, India defeated Pakistan 1-0 in the Melbourne final to claim its sixth consecutive Olympic hockey gold.By then, Indian hockey was not simply successful. It was the standard against which the rest of the world measured itself. The team's style, built around close control, dribbling, speed and intricate passing, became synonymous with Indian hockey. The term ‘Indian dribble’ itself emerged from the team's remarkable stick skills.
The end of the streak, and another beginning
India's Olympic dominance eventually faced its biggest challenge. At the 1960 Rome Olympics, Pakistan defeated India 1-0 in the final, ending India's run of six consecutive gold medals. India had to settle for silver. But the setback did not immediately end the golden era. India reclaimed Olympic gold at Tokyo 1964, defeating Pakistan 1-0 in the final. Bronze medals followed at Mexico City 1968 and Munich 1972, before India finished seventh at Montreal 1976.Then came one final Olympic gold. At Moscow 1980, India returned to the top of the podium, winning its eighth and most recent Olympic hockey gold. That triumph marked the final gold medal of India's historic Olympic hockey dynasty.
More than medals
The significance of India's hockey dominance cannot be measured only through its medal tally. Hockey gave generations of Indians sporting heroes at a time when international sporting success was still rare. Dhyan Chand. Balbir Singh Sr. KD Singh Babu. Leslie Claudius. Udham Singh. Prithipal Singh. Charanjit Singh. These were names that represented excellence long before India developed the sporting ecosystem that exists today. The hockey team also helped create an emotional connection between sport and national identity. When India won in London in 1948, the victory carried the weight of a newly independent country. When the team returned to the top in Tokyo in 1964, it reaffirmed India's place among the world's elite. And when India won its eighth Olympic hockey gold in Moscow in 1980, it added another chapter to a legacy that had already stretched across more than five decades.
The long wait for a new Olympic medal
After the 1980 gold, Indian hockey entered a very different era. The team went through decades without another Olympic medal. India even missed the Olympic qualification in 2008, a dramatic low point for a team that had once seemed almost unbeatable. The revival finally came at Tokyo 2020, held in 2021 because of the pandemic, when India won men's hockey bronze. Paris 2024 brought another bronze, giving the men's team back-to-back Olympic medals and signalling that the sport's historic legacy was beginning to find a new generation. The golden age may belong to history, but its influence remains.
The sport that announced India to the world
Today, Indian sport has many faces. Cricket has produced global superstars. Badminton has created Olympic champions. Athletics has given India a historic Olympic gold. Wrestling, shooting, boxing and weightlifting have all produced their own icons. But hockey came first. It was the sport through which generations of Indians learned what it meant to see their country dominate on the world's biggest sporting stage. And perhaps that is why the 1948 London gold remains so special. India had been independent for less than a year. The country was beginning the difficult task of building a new identity. On a hockey field in London, its athletes provided one of the earliest reasons for millions of Indians to look at the world and say: we belong here. That is the enduring legacy of Indian hockey. Not just eight Olympic gold medals. But the sporting identity of a nation.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked up the key wicket of veteran Steve Smith to reduce the hosts to 161 for four at stumps on day three in Darwin. As Australia trail by 67 runs in their second innings with six wickets remaining, they sit on the back foot, staring at a shock home defeat against Bangladesh – a nation they are yet to lose to in Tests at home. Cameron Green and Alex Carey are at the crease, with the lanky all-rounder batting on 43. After being dismissed for 426 shortly after lunch, Bangladesh seamer Hasan Mahmud stunned Australia by removing both openers cheaply. Hasan, who took a career-best 6-55 in the first innings, bowled Jake Weatherald (0) and Travis Head (17) identically, with the two chopping on to their stumps.

On a good batting strip, Marnus Labuschagne and Smith initially steadied the ship, before Labuschagne, who has been out of form, played over the top of a straight ball from left-arm spinner Taijul Islam and was bowled. Smith, so often Australia's saviour in such conditions, batted sensibly to start with. As the scoreboard reached 122, he got a leading edge to off-spinner Mehidy and chipped it straight back to the bowler. "The way we showed character and the way we played for the last two or three days was outstanding," visiting captain Najmul Hossain Shanto told Fox Sports. "We are taking it session by session, focusing on the process and not the outcome." Earlier, the Bangladeshi all-rounder Mehidy did the damage with the bat, scoring a valuable half-century in Bangladesh's first innings. Also read| How India broke the 'poor traveller' tag to become cricket rulers since independence After Bangladesh were well beaten by a Cricket Australia XI in their only warm-up match, including being bowled out for 54 in the second innings, many expected this Test to be an easy Australia victory. But the unfancied visitors bowled the hosts out for 198 on the first day and then showed great dedication with the bat to keep the hosts out in the field for 138 overs. Mehidy shielded the lower order brilliantly in the morning session to frustrate a tiring Australian attack. Bangladesh stand on the brink of a historic first Test win in Australia as Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Hasan Mahmud leave the hosts 161/4 at stumps on Day 3 in Darwin.

As India celebrates its 80th Independence Day on Saturday (Aug 15), we take a look and cherish how, with a fundamental shift in mindset from just being happy to qualify to acquiring global dominance in several sports, they have come far since gaining independence. On India’s 80th Independence Day, explore 7 key factors that transformed Indian sports from being content to qualify to achieving global dominance.

The Golden Mindset: How India traded 'happy to qualify' for global sporting dominance

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India’s interest and willingness to host the 2036 Summer Olympic Games. Speaking on India’s 80th Independence Day at the Red Fort in New Delhi on Saturday (Aug 15), PM Modi also announced a need for a nationwide talent hunt for sports. Stressing the need to widen India’s Olympic footprint by identifying and nurturing raw talent from villages and cities across the country, Modi noted with regret that India doesn’t even participate in two-thirds of around 40 disciplines at the Olympic Games. “There are around 40 sports at the Olympics, with around 325 to 350 events. You will be saddened to know, my fellow countrymen, my young people, I challenge you, I appeal to you, I seek your help: India does not participate in even two-thirds of these sports. We are not present; we do not qualify,” PM Modi said during his address to the nation on India’s 80th Independence Day. Also read| 'Very big honour': Shubman Gill on leading India in historic 600th Test Emphasising the need to excel in sports where India currently lacks a footprint, PM Modi urged a sharp shift in focus. "We have decided that the 2036 Olympics should be held in India. But in 2036, in the disciplines in which India does not play today, in the disciplines in which India does not qualify, in the events that India has left aside, three-fourths of them are waiting for us. India will focus on them, and for this, we are also running a talent identification campaign. “If we need athletes for 2036, then today, a talent hunt campaign will be conducted from village to village, city to city, school to school, to identify sporting talent. We have to focus on the children between the ages of five and fifteen, on our daughters. Their abilities will be assessed, and they will then receive specialised training to develop them into good athletes who can represent the country,” he continued.
TOPS a Massive Success: PM Modi
As India readies to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, 20 years since last hosting it, PM Modi shed light on the bigger picture: the Olympics. Revealing how the government’s flagship Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) has been a massive success in providing support to the athletes, Modi said, "India is making space for itself in the world of sports. We hear our national anthem frequently and see our tricolour going up very often. TOPS has achieved great success. Whether it is Khelo India Games, University Games, Beach Games, Winter Games, or sports training, sports medicine, sports nutrition, India is moving ahead at a great pace. "India's performance is improving, and we are strong contenders to become an Olympic host in 2036.
