Champions League: Real Madrid-Man City settle for frantic draw as do Bayern-Arsenal

The UEFA Champions League quarterfinal first legs delivered entertaining draws on Tuesday (April 9) evening after Real Madrid and Manchester City settled for a frantic 3-3 draw at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. A night decorated by wonderful goals saw the pendulum swing either way before both teams settled for the draw as they now set sights on the second leg next week. The night also saw Bayern Munich earn a valuable 2-2 draw in London against Arsenal in their Champions League quarterfinal contest.

Real Madrid-Man City settle for draw

The tie which was the attraction of the football world did not fail to produce goods as City’s Bernardo Silva opened the scoring in the third minute of the match. Silva converted a direct free kick which helped open City their account. The free kick was only given to City after Aurélien Tchouaménibrought down Jack Grealish just outside the penalty area.

However, City’s lead did not last long as Eduardo Camavinga’s 12th-minute effort saw a wild deflection which landed in the City goal for Real’s equaliser. Within 100 seconds of the equaliser, it was Real that took the lead after Brazilian winger Rodrygo was let through on goal while goalkeeper Stefan Ortega failed to clear his line. The score would then remain 2-1 in favour of Real Madrid until the final quarter of the first leg.

However, a classic finish from the outside of the 18-yard box saw Phil Foden score City’s equaliser leavingBernabéu silent. Within five minutes of that goal, City would again gain the lead after Josko Gvardiol scored his first goal for the club. Like Foden’s effort, he too struck the ball from outside the box before beating the goalkeeper.

While it looked like City were cruising to another win at the Bernabéu, it was a neatly taken first-time shot from Federico Valverde in the 79th minute that saw Real get their second equaliser of the night. There were no more goals on the night as both teams would settle for a draw.

In the night’s other quarterfinal first leg, Arsenal and Bayern Munich played an entertaining 2-2 draw. Arsenal opened the scoring through Saka’s neatly taken shot before former Arsenal man Serge Gnabry got Bayern back in the game. Bayern were then awarded a penalty which was dispatched by former Tottenham man Harry Kane. Bayern were on the verge of a win before substitute Leandro Trossard found the back of the net in the 76th minute.

Both ties will now head to the second leg which will take place on the evening of Wednesday (April 17).
