Two army men killed, 9 injured in terrorist attack on Army camp in Jammu and Kashmir

Two army men were killedand nine others, including Major, sustained injuries in a pre-dawn attack by agroup of three to four Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists at Sunjwan army camp in Jammu city, officials said.

Three terrorists have been killed, ANI reported.

Army officials said the Major, who was injured, was airlifted to an Udhampur hospital where his condition was stated to be critical.

"As part of the ongoing operation in Sunjwan, the army has killed two heavily armed terrorists. The terrorists were wearing combat uniforms carrying AK 56 assault rifle, large amount of ammunition and hand grenades," the defence Public Relations Officer said.

"Search of their belongings confirm the terrorists to be from Jaish-e-Mohammed. So far a JCO (Junior Commissioned Officer) and one NCO both belonging to Jammu and Kashmir have been martyred and nine others are injured. Two of them being critical. Operations will continue till all terrorists are apprehended or killed," he added.

The army said that operations were in progress with "extreme caution and restraint"to safeguard the unarmed soldiers, women and children in the houses. It saidthat most of theover 150 houses in the complex had been cleared and their occupants moved to safety.

There is no hostage crisis in the camp, ANI reported earlier.

Armoured vehicles were deployed by the army during the operation.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met the injured at the Military Hospital in Jammu.

The terrorists entered from the rear side of Sunjwan army camp where family quarters are located, DGP S P Vaid said.

An army personnel's daughter is one among the six injured.

The terrorists, who are believed to be around three, were isolated, army officials said earlier.

IGP SD Singh Jamwal told reporters here that "around 4:55 am suspicious movement was noticed by the sentry and his bunker was fired upon. The fire was retaliated. The number of militants isn't known. They've been cornered in one of the family quarters."

Security forces and police have cordoned off the area around the Sunjwan army camp which falls under the first Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry in 36 Brigade.

Soon after the attack, reinforcements of the army's special forces and SOG rushed to the spot and cordoned off the whole area amid a fierce gunfight, asecurity official said.

Schools in the entire area around the camp have been closed by authorities as a precautionary measure.

A high alert has been sounded in Jammu and security beefed up in and around the city.

Intelligence inputs had warned of an attack on the army or security establishment by Jaish-e-Mohammed in view of the death anniversary of Afzal Guru who was hanged on February 9, 2013.
