Passenger bus en route to Kasol overturns on Chandigarh-Manali highway, 31 injured

Tahawwur Hussain Rana, an accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, was questioned by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for the second consecutive day on Saturday (Apr 13).
Rana, 64, a Canadian businessman of Pakistani origin, was extradited from the United States last week after a long legal battle and diplomatic wrangling. Since arriving in India, he has been held under round-the-clock surveillance in a fortified cell inside the CGO Complex, reports PTI.
<h2>Rana getting special treatment?</h2>
As per reports, Tahawwur Rana has demanded three things from the authorities: pen, paper and a Quran (Islamic holy book). However, speaking to HT, authorities insisted that Rana was being treated "as any other arrested person with no special treatment" with no special concessions beyond those required by law.

"Beyond that, he has not made any other demands," added the officer.
Authorities are keeping an eye on Rana to ensure that he does not use the pen to harm himself.
<h2>Probe on</h2>
Investigators from the National Investigation Agency are probing Rana's alleged coordination with Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives and his known associate, David Coleman Headley (aka Daood Gilani), whose reconnaissance helped carry out the 26/11 attacks. Among other angles, Rana is being questioned about key meetings in Dubai and his movements across India in the weeks preceding the tragic attack.

As per reports, Rana's lawyer made a last-ditch attempt to stop the extradition by writing a letter to the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. Rana's lawyer, while citing his health, claimed there was a possibility of him being tortured because of "human rights record and jail conditions in India".

Last year, we witnessed around 4.46 lakh tourists in 33 days, and this record was broken in just fifteen days this year. Hundreds of gardeners and staff work day and night to prepare the garden for public viewing. It takes around 6 months to get the garden ready, and huge planning is done much earlier before the opening of the garden.

Users of digital payment apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm were unable to complete their transactions.
DownDetector, a platform that monitors outages, reported as many as 2,147 complaints by 12.56 pm, with nearly 80% of users saying they experienced issues.&nbsp; The disruption also impacted a broad range of financial institutions and major banks like HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, and Kotak Mahindra Bank.

This was the third time India&rsquo;s most widely used digital payment system was hit in three weeks, after March 26 and April 2, disrupting transactions and frustrating users.
On March 26, digital transactions were hit due to a widespread UPI outage, with a large number of users reporting problems in the instant payment interface. &ldquo;NPCI had faced intermittent technical issues owing to which UPI had partial decline. The same has been addressed now and the system has stabilised. Regret the inconvenience,&rdquo; the regulator had said in an X post. On April 2 also, payments via UPI were affected.

UPI has become a transformational product in digital payments and continues to break monthly transaction records but the pace of growth is slowing as the user base has widened. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), UPI accounted for 83% of total payment volumes by the end of 2024, up from 34% in 2019, while the share of other payment modes like RTGS, NEFT, IMPS, credit cards and debit cards dropped from 66% to 17%.
Meanwhile, earlier in the week, the NPCI had announced a policy update for international UPI payments. Effective April 8, the use of QR codes for transactions outside India has been restricted to enhance payer identification. The domestic QR code payments remain unaffected.
UPI users vented their feelings on social media, as one said, "Nothing &ldquo;partial&rdquo; about this. The failure is complete and across the board!"
Another said, &ldquo;Being a retailer, when UPI payments are down, it becomes very difficult. Lost quite a lot of weekend business due to this.&rdquo;

In a post on X, the Indian Army's White Knight Corps paid a tribute to JCO Subedar Kuldeep Chand. They said: "General Officer Commanding (GOC), White Knight Corps and all ranks salute the supreme sacrifice of braveheart Sub Kuldeep Chand of 9 PUNJAB. He laid down his life while gallantly leading a counter-infiltration operation along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Keri-Battal area of Sunderbani on the night of 11 Apr 2025".
"His team's valour and Sub Kuldeep's ultimate sacrifice foiled an infiltration attempt by terrorists. We stand in solidarity with the bereaved family in this hour of grief," added the post.

This happened as terrorists tried to infiltrate the Indian side of the LoC in the Keri-Battal area of Akhnoor sector in Jammu district.

<h2>Three terrorists killed</h2>
The White Knight Corps confirmed that the operation has been ongoing for four days, and a total of three terrorists have been killed so far.
"Alert Army soldiers engaged the terrorists in an exchange of gunfire and the infiltration bid was foiled."
"In the exchange of fire with the terrorists, one JCO was critically injured. He was shifted to hospital yesterday. He succumbed to critical injuries today," said officials.

Multiple surveillance measures and ambushes were set up in the area based on intelligence inputs in a joint operation led by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), sources said. Authorities have placed the entire region on high alert as search operations continue to track down potential threats.
